In flashback, Hurley is watching the megalotto draw as the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42 are drawn. Exactly matching the numbers on his ticket. He faints from the shock of discovering that he has just won the jackpot and his mother comes rushing in to revive him. She chastises him for his lifestyle and tells him that he must make changes in his life.

Okay, um, all right. But when I saw that, I was with I was with my daughter and Angelique, and I didn't pay attention to like what I was in front of. I'm just walking. At the same time, both my daughter and my and Angelique both scream, fuck you! I was like, I think I died and went to hell. Like, what the fuck?

Alright, um Hurley is still pondering what to do about his big win when he is called into the boss's office. His boss shows him CCTV footage from the previous night where he has been caught eating eight chicken drumsticks. He he's reprimanded for it and other petty misdemeanors, and Hurley quits on the spot and walks out. Did you see who the boss was?

He looked familiar but wasn't clicking. His name is Randy. Is that the same guy from the pa from the paper? Is that was that whatchacall's boss too? Like you're gonna have to give me more, just by what's it wasn't Locke's boss, right? It was. Okay. I'm like, is that not sure? They all look alike, you know. The hair, the hair was different. The typical middle management dweeb. They all look alike, you know.

And this is before this he was Hurley's boss before he was Locke's boss.

Okay. Oh, he's moving up in the world.

Because think about the timeline. Hurley, by the time he's Locke's boss, Locke is on his way to Australia, which is where this all which is like the the the right before moment of lost. Right. And Hurley Hurley still hasn't claimed his lotto winning, so you know that that's still he doesn't own the box factory yet.

As he sits outside having a mild panic attack, his friend and colleague Johnny joins him and announces that he too has quit. The two start the celebration of their unexpected day off by taking a trip to the local local record store where they find copies of Drive Shafts You All Everybody in the $2 sale bin.

I did catch that. I was like, she's gonna be so proud that I caught that. Yeah, it was cute.

After singing along tunelessly and inaccurately, Hurley goes over to the headphone section and starts talking to the shop assistant. Starla, a girl he's had a crush on for some time. He plucks up the nerve to invite her to the whole study concert over the weekend, and to his great surprise, she happily accepts. Johnny is suitably impressed by Hurley's newfound courage and asks him what has brought it on. Hurley implies that he wanted to make his move before the before things change. So this is obviously a a theme with Hurley about things changing.

Like you saw with his mom when he said he likes his life and now with his friend, he even at some level he knows, like he knows it's not gonna be the same. He knows, yeah, because most people don't realize you win a hundred or something million dollars, they think oh, it's gonna be all gravy. Yeah, no, no, no, no, no, no, right, no, and this is just me, or is it feeling like the typical like serial killer? Sorry, whoever the actor is, nothing wrong with you, but the guy, he does like he'll play the serial killer, he'll play the serial killer in every movie there possibly is, you know. You know I'm right.

No comment. Around dusk, Johnny and Hurley drive around the neighborhood stealing gnomes from gardens and filling their van with them. They go to Randy's house and lay out their booty to spell Clucky on his front lawn. Buoyed by their mischief, they cruise around in the van, listening to music, joking and talking. Pearly starts to become reflective and makes Johnny promise that they will always remain friends and be able to enjoy good times like these no matter what changes in the future.

Some of them are, some of them are kind of cute. I think it it I think it really all depends on the context, how close they are to your house, and how many of them are there are because if it's like one and it's far by the street, like it might be cute.

At the beach and the hatch. While eating profuse amounts of food in the swan's pantry, Hurley is confronted by Jin speaking perfect English and a man in a chicken suit. When questioned about his newfound mastery of the language, Jin says Hurley is speaking Korean, to which Hurley responds, I am, in Korean, with English subtitles. Hurley asks Jin about the man in the chicken suit, and Jin warns her and Jin warns Hurley that everything's going to change. A response Hurley seems somewhat phased by. The man in the chicken suit starts blinking in time to the beeps of the countdown timer's alarm. Jin wishes Hurley a cluckety cluck cluck day, and the man in the chicken suit shouts, Hurley, with Kate's voice, as Hurley awakens from a dream.

Uh-huh. So I love the fact that everyone's go-to item as soon as they see that pantry is a chocolate. Like I love that. They're like, oh, chocolate.

That would definitely be mine too. Yeah, I love that. Is that what you would what would you grab? The chocolate. Oh, okay. Yeah, me too. Unless it was unless it was like beer. And then I probably would want a beer more than a chocolate.

Um, so I did have I had like a 30-second like what the fuck moment through that through that dream. Because before we realized it was a dream, I'm like, wait, the food comes plated out the box? I'm like, oh okay, hallucination. Okay, never mind. I'm like, alright, never mind.

Hurley was drinking milk. Did you notice what was on the side of the milk? No. It was um remember back in the day when they put the missing kids on the milk?

It said missing and it had Walt's picture. Ah. Which Hurley knows? Yeah, how would he know that?

Kate reminds him that it is time to enter the code and that the numbers are written on a piece of paper taped to the computer in case he forgets. He says he remembers them. Kate tells Hurley that she will be taking the next shift as Locke went back to the beach. Kate says it's pretty cool that they had jobs again, and Hurley replies, Hooray for us, in a tone suggesting he is not entirely happy with his new role as head of rationing. Later, when Hurley is washing in the ocean, Charlie Charlie approaches him and inquires about what is inside the hatch. Hurley tries to be evasive, but Charlie persists in trying to find out what's going on. He asks further questions trying to find out what is happening, but Hurley gives no satisfactory answers. Charlie accuses him of lying about his knowledge of the hatch and also about being worth 150 million, walking off in disgust. Hurley goes to Rose and talks to her about what's in the hatch. Rose says she isn't too interested as her current concern is dealing with the laundry. When Hurley reveals that what's inside could help her with this task, she decides to accompany him to the hatch. Once inside, they meet Jack. He is concerned Hurley has been telling too many people about the hatch. Hurley says Rose won't tell anyone because she's cool and he needs help with the task of organizing the food. Rose looks around the hatch and says, Honey, I wouldn't even know what to say. Back at the beach, Claire spots the message bottle the people on the raft took with them washing up to shore. In the hatch, Jack explains to Hurley and Rose that it is only a matter of time before they have to tell the rest of the Lossies about the hatch and the food. They decide that nobody can get anything until they have made an inventory and figured out how to make it last. With the record player on in the background, Hurley and Rose start to work through the contents of the hatch, discovering ranch dressing, canned tuna, and Apollo candy bars. Rose speaks wistfully of her husband Bernard's sweet tooth and her faith in him still being alive. Hurley starts to reveal his anxiety that everyone will hate him because of his new job just as Kate comes in to take a bottle of shampoo. Hurley tries to object, but Kate ignores him and leaves him and leaves to take a shower. Rose says it's just one bottle, but Hurley worries he's already starting to lose control. While Loc is walking through the jungle, he stops at a fruit tree and calls out that he knows he is being followed and has been leading his tracker in a big circle. Charlie appears sheepishly from some bushes and begins to challenge Loc on why he's being left in the dark. He points out that he was involved in getting Claire's baby back and although he didn't go on the A Team mission to the Black Rock, he would have if he'd been asked. He says he should be entitled to some answers, and Locke concedes by asking what he wants to know. In the Swan, Said is attempting to break through the blocked-off door. He tells Jack the door has concrete behind him, which could be up to 10 feet thick. Jack demonstrates the magnetic properties of the doorway with the key around his neck. Said finds this interesting and suggests they might have better luck getting to the other side by going underneath it. I have a question.

What is the whole per are they just trying to like figure out like what's going on, like how big it is, or they does there a purpose to this little scavenger hunt? Like I never understood the purpose of this.

Mm-hmm. Luck has been telling Charlie about the hatch, the button that has to be pressed every 108 minutes, and the discovery and subsequent disappearance of Desmond. He explains that the survivors will now be pushing the button and that he is setting up a rotation of six hour shifts. Charlie seems unenthusiastic until he learns that there is a record player down there. When Locke reveals that Hurley is in charge of the food, Charlie heads off to confront him. He finds Hurley at the beach sitting under a tree and says Locke has filled him in about the hatch and the food. He asks for the peanut butter for Claire, but Hurley says he can't give him any. Charlie tries to emotionally blackmail him for withholding it from a nursing mother and declares that Hurley has changed. Charlie walks off in disgust. In the foundations of the hatch, Said and Jack crawl through the supports and pipework by flashwork. But what is wrong with me today? Reading is fundamental.

Oh my god, I think I drank too much or not enough. Not enough my answer is always not enough.

Take two. In the foundations of the hatch, Saeed and Jack crawl through the supports and pipework by flashlight and find the same blocked doorway, which appears to be just as thick with concrete. Said guesses there is some sort of geothermal generator and that the power source is on the other side. He says the last time he heard of concrete being poured over everything like this was Chernobyl. Suddenly, they hear a clanking noise followed by steam and the sound of water flowing. Jack goes to investigate, climbs back up into the hatch through another grate, and comes out by a door with steam seeping out of it. He pushes the door open to discover Kate wrapping herself in a towel, having just taken a shower. In a slightly awkward exchange, as she retrieves her clothes, she tells him that despite the poor pressure, temperature drops, and sulfuric smell, it was a good shower. She suggests that Jack could use one and will leave him the shampoo. Jack grins as he watches her leave to get dressed. I'm just saying, like, if that was Sawyer.

It would have had a different like yeah, totally different scene. Totally different scene. Yeah.

Son is working in her garden when she is interrupted by Claire carrying Aaron and Sharon and Shannon with Vincent. Claire tells Sun nervously that they have found the message bottle from the raft and they felt she would be the best person to decide what to do. Loc is in the swan's gun vault examining the guns when he is confronted by Hurley for telling Charlie about the food. Hurley says this will change everything, to which Locke replies that change is a good thing. Hurley vehemently disputes this and says he will now become the bad guy for denying food to the rest of the Losties. He tries to quit, but Locke talks him back into it, saying they all have difficult they all have to do difficult things. Hurley concedes with an apparent newfound determination and heeds out into the jungle. In this scene, Locke actually tells him that they've all had jobs that they didn't want to do. And I thought that that was funny considering that they had they both shared the same asshole boss.

Just as he has prepared the explosives and inserted the fuse, Rose appears at the doorway and asks him what he is doing. He says this is the only solution, despite her protestations that somebody will get hurt. He pleads with her to leave, but she stands her ground and demands an explanation. With heart Felt vigor, Curly says the distribution of the food will cause brips in the group and he will be the focus of the anger. He starts to draw parallels with how people react to his lottery winning with questions like why does Hugo get everything? Why should he get to decide? And that everybody will hate him. After his outburst, he calms down and confesses that he doesn't know what to do. Hurley approaches Jack on the beach. Actually, when we get to this scene, they infuse flashbacks of people finding out that he's the lottery winner. Right. They pull up in the Minnie Mart gas station and there's a crowd and press.

Right, and the guy was like, Oh, maybe someone got killed, or there was a shooting or something.

SPEAKER_01 23:14

Yeah. And so you see the look on his friend Johnny's face. Because the the guy, the who's actually the one in the chicken suit in the beginning, it's the Minimart worker. Oh, I didn't realize that. Mm-hmm. And he's like, That's the guy.

SPEAKER_03 23:32

And his friend realized that. He looks so betrayed. I'm wondering, but is he betrayed because he didn't tell him? Is he felt betrayed because he won? Is it both?

SPEAKER_01 23:44

Right. But Hurley realizes that this is now the reality. Yeah.

But he knew it was coming. I think on some level, he knew that things were going to change.

SPEAKER_01 23:58

And I also think that he wanted the opportunity to tell him himself he just wasn't ready. Because he knew things were gonna change. Like he like he like he went to. That's why he didn't cash the ticket.

Right. He's like, let me ask this girl out before this shit. Let me hang out with my buddy before this shit happened. But yeah, I felt bad for Hurley.

Does this more match what we saw in Jin's flashback?

Remember in in one of um Jin's Oh, one hit right on the TV show. But you know what? I didn't remember what scene like you told me, and I went back to see, I didn't remember seeing I didn't remember what the scene was on the TV. That scene.

I think it was this one. Okay. I didn't go back to check, but I'm I'm pretty sure it was this one.

That makes sense. I have so much because I decided, you know, I'm not gonna interrupt because my little things weren't conversation worthy. They're just like little quips. So I'm gonna let you go through your synopsis and then I'll throw my quips.

Okay. I'm almost Yeah, I'm almost done. Hurley approaches Jack on the beach and explains that despite there being enough food to feed one man three meals per day for three months, split amongst 40 people, it isn't gonna go that far. He says he has a plan, and since he's in charge of the food, it must be done his way. To his surprise and massive relief, Jack agrees. In a montage sequence on the beach that evening, Hurley distributes all the food amongst the survivors. He gives a jar of peanut butter to Charlie, who presents it to Claire to her obvious delight. Charlie then hugs Hurley in gratitude. Shannon shares some of her food with Vincent. Kate and Jack share a meal. Locke eats with various red shirts, and everybody is seen socializing and enjoying themselves. Hurley is the subject of much thanks and appreciation from the camp, and it is clear that everybody loves Hugo. But this bothered me back. Why?

It's just illogical. I'm just saying. I mean, so they have I don't know if they just had a little moment of fun and then they're gonna ration the rest. Or it was just like a free-for-all. But if it's the if it's the former, fine. If it's the latter, like, oh come on, people, let's be responsible. Like, do we really want to make friends over being responsible? So that's that's why it bothered me. Well, being a grown-up is making the hard decisions, yeah.

And but we didn't see her like give out all the food. We saw it. No, no, no, no, that's why it's kind of like an item or so to each person, right?

And then I'm like, okay, but everyone seems to have their favorite thing. So if it's like a moment of fun and then ration the rest, then fine, great. Well, we don't really get to see. We don't know, we don't know what it is, so that's why right. That's why I'm like, I don't know how I feel about this scene. That's why I have two feelings.

And it's it's reminiscent of one of the first episodes where he's giving out the airplane meals to everyone and he's making sure that people are eating. Remember, and he gives Claire two meals because she's pregnant.

Yeah, and I and at at that point, at that point, you don't know you're stuck there forever. You know what I mean? So I'm like, that didn't bother me. That was like, okay, let's just, you know, and that airplane food isn't gonna last forever. I mean, like, quality wasn't so it has to be eaten anyway. So that didn't bother me. This kind of like you've been there for over a month now, so it's probably safe to assume like you might come and be there for a while. But like I said, if it was the former, cool, not a problem. If it was the latter, it just hurts my sensibilities.

Meanwhile, Sunday by herself in the garden, burying the message bottle.

I feel like she didn't want to she didn't want to like break anyone's heart. I don't think she wanted them to know that they I think she took that as like they failed, and she doesn't want anyone to think else. That's how I took it.

Like we're gonna Yeah, and I think that the the analogy of it is like She's burying them. She's burying the them and the truth. You know? Yeah. What what the metaphor, thank you. I don't know, you didn't say it, but your face said it.

But it's it's like a metaphor for her burying them and the truth along with it. And this is not the first time that Sun has had a secret. But it's for the best. I think sometimes Is it?

Like at the point, like w I mean she has I would say that as far as the raft people go, she has the most at stake because it's her husband on the raft. It's not just the the prospect of being saved or rescued, but it's also her loved one. Whereas everyone else on the island, the connection is the hope that they're gonna get rescued. Rescued. But it's not like nobody else's husband or loved one was on that raft except for son. So I could understand in that respect why Shannon and Claire would bring it to the her. Right. But at the same time, maybe she's not ready to deal with it.

Or like to accept that that might be the truth. Either way, I don't see anything wrong with her doing that at this moment in time. Like, it's like, what are we gonna do? Like right now, like there's nothing we can do about it right now. Because obviously it didn't work, so what are we gonna do? Build another raft? Like, there's nothing we can do about it at this moment. So let's sit, marinate, and you know, enjoy our peanut butter. And yeah. Rose. Mm-hmm.

No, I was gonna I was leading into like meanwhile. Rose slips an Apollo candy bar into her pocket in anticipation of a reunion with her sweet-toothed husband, Bernard, and clasps onto his wedding ring as she smiles warmly. Across the island, Sawyer, Jin, and Michael are in the pit where they had been held by the others. Jin suggests building a human pyramid to try to get out, but Sawyer says no. Michael starts shouting to be let out until Sawyer tells him to chill. Um, is it me or is has there been like have you noticed like a change in Sawyer?

SPEAKER_03 30:36

Absolutely. He's still Sawyer, but I see him he's he he considers himself part of the group. Like the group, like they're one, which is inevitable. You go through hell with somebody, or else, you know, and I kind of like that. Like he's still him, he's still Sawyer, he's still sarcastic, he's still like gruff, but he's like I think he also needs a Snickers bar. He got shot in the shoulder. I'm just saying, dude's been through a lot.

So Michael starts shouting. Oh no, we Michael says every minute I spend down here is another minute. My boy is still out there. Sawyer tells him there's nothing they can do. He is still suffering from when he was shot in the arm on the raft, and the wound appears to be getting infected. The cover of the pit is opened. The large man throws down a rope and orders Jin to climb out. They are suspicious and Sawyer tells him not to do it. Anna Lucia appears Anna Lucia appears behind the man and threatens to shoot Sawyer if Jin does not climb out. Jin complies and Anna tells Michael to come up next. But Sawyer tells him not to. She cocks the gun, pointing it at Sawyer. Sawyer is saying that she's bluffing and won't really shoot. She hurls a rocket as head.

I swear Sawyer is always getting hit by a female. Like, it is that Kate now is out of the sea.

Like it was just such a But this is like back when him and Kate were playing Tom and Jerry, and Kate kept hitting him with rocks and her, you know. Michael climbs up and Anna looks to Sawyer next, but he refuses. The large pit covers promptly slammed down in Sawyer's face. Sawyer grudgingly relents, and Anna announces it's time to move out before it gets dark. She starts to lead the group into the jungle. During the trek, a blonde woman introduces herself to Michael as Libby, and she says there were 23 survivors from the tale section. The large man apologizes to Sawyer for his actions and the misunderstanding when they first met, but is interrupted by Anna who announces, We're here. She pulls back some vines and creepers to reveal a door set into the jungle wall on which she wraps out a secret knock. The door unbolts and is opened by another taily who lets them in. They walk through a dimly lit corridor into the main chamber, where it appears the tailies have been sheltering. A Dharma logo on the walls indicate that this is the arrow. There are a few electric light sources, but this new hatch has none of the comforts seen in the swan and appears more like a storage room. Two more tailies, the flight attendant from the plane and a gray haired man, are waiting inside anxiously and anxiously discuss the arrival of the new survivors amongst themselves. As Michael, Jen, and Sawyer wait in a corner, the older man approaches. He seems beside himself with worry and asks if there's a woman named Rose where they came from. As Sawyer and Michael tell him there is and she's okay, his face fills with relief and joy as he grasps Michael's hands and thanks him profusely. He introduces himself as Bernard. I was so happy to see that. Did this get you a little choked up?

Or B just an island that's really just walking huge. Either way, so it's is it possible that it's too different it's the other side of the island? Because as they said, it's the other side of the island and never meet? Yeah, that is quite possible. Especially if you think that's a fucking plane crash. You're like, who else is gonna survive this shit but us? So why would they even walk the other island?
