We forgot to talk about this on our pre-show. But for many podcast listeners, listeners, fans of true crime, we had some big fucking news this week.

Yeah. And I fuck Lisa. Because I texted you this, like when I found out when I heard it on the radio, I was like, oh shit. Like, I think I was driving and I waited until I got to a red light. And I was like, Text Lisa. And Siri was like, What do you want to say? And I was like, He's out of prison. Yeah. Yeah. And you were like, pre-show, we should make it a whole show. And I was like, Lisa's right about that.

Well, we were supposed to do both, but like, yeah. But yeah, so uh for those of you who know who Ednan Sayed is, who have listened to the serial podcast, and hopefully you went further than that and listened to Truth and Justice andor Undisclosed. Serial is only is honestly really the tip of the iceberg. But his conviction was vacated this week, uh, in like totally swift fashion, shackles coming off, and he went home. And I was trying to, I was the date the Monday, which was the court date, I was working. It was like the very end of my work day, and I'm like trying to follow along on the Twitter feed as they're you know, letting letting us know like what's happening inside the courtroom. And then as soon as I see like conviction vacated, I was like, oh my god, I don't even know this person, and I'm so fucking happy for him and his family. I'm so fucking happy. But with that being said, one of the reasons the conviction was vacated is because there were they found notes in the police file of two websites.

I heard there was new evidence that brought up like two new suspects. That's all I heard because I didn't want to look at it. It's not it's not new evidence. You gotta be fucking kidding me.

This was in the police file, and because of that, it was a huge Brady violation. I read the I read the whole motion that the court put out the week before, like before before he he went to court to have to see if they would vacate the conviction. So I read it and it outlined two suspects. They don't say who they are, um, and they don't say like which one is which. But the gist of it is that one suspect was overheard threatening to kill Hay and had means, motive, and opportunity. And one of the suspects there were like assault assault charges. Uh I don't like I don't want to screw this up and I don't remember exactly what it said, but and what and one of the suspects had a relative living where Hayes car was found, so they don't say which one had which, or like I definitely know who one of the suspects is because I figured it out.

One of one of them makes mention that they gave one of the suspects polygraph that he he passed with flying colors, two polygraphs. There is a person who had two polygraphs that supposedly passed, and that was Mr. S, also known as Alonzo Sellers, also known as the guy who supposedly stumbled upon Hay's body when he went to take a piss at Legan Park. Oh shit, doesn't necessarily mean that he did anything, yeah, but but he's definitely one of the suspects that the motion mentions, and the other one, this one I'm less sure on, but the other one might be Jay because of the assault in a car, because his ex-girlfriend talked about her assault him assaulting her while she was in the car and her son was in the backseat. So it it's a little bit more vague, but it could be him. Now, had you asked me if any of those people really had motive, I don't see it, but I don't I don't know as much as everybody, you know, the the people closer to the case know. What I do know is that had I been the one investigating, I definitely would not have started with anybody except Don. Now I don't I'm not saying he did it, I'm just saying that he was never looked at, and that does that leaves so many questions unanswered.

You know, especially like the fact that a couple years ago we drove through that park. Like, you don't kind of like accident like you don't when you're driving through that park, and it wasn't like just in 1999, like this park has a reputation, like prior to 1999, when like she was murdered, right? It's so fucking off-putting, yeah, regardless of the fact that her body was found there, that like you wouldn't you would want to try to get out of that park before you pull over to take a piss. Like you should know you would and you would no, but like even investigators that go to that park, like I think I shared like a video with you a couple years ago. Somebody was like investigating that park on like ghost hunters or something like that, or like a ghost hunter type show, and they made a quote that sticks with me for for some reason it's always stuck with me. It's like you'll find a body looking for a body in Lake and Park. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, and so it's the fact that it's like that's a common like dumping ground for bodies, right? You don't just go there but and park your car, or he was driving like a semi-truck, right? No, that's the story.

Yeah, I just I I know that he was his story is that he went home to get a tool that he needed for work and then he was heading back to work when he pulled over to take a piss. Yeah, I don't know. It it's it's a weird story, but sometimes it's and I'm not saying that he's innocent, I'm just saying that sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. You know what I mean? Like why was he driving that way? Why did he walk all that way to take a piss? Like I feel like if it was a lie, sometimes lies are simpler. Yeah, because they they because you want to make them believable, and like the truth sometimes is the one that you're like, no, but I promise, like I know this is stupid, but so I don't know. You know, I don't I don't know if it's a lie, I don't know if it's the truth, I wasn't there. Uh you know, I just I just hope that one day we actually find out what the fuck happened, and I hope that her family gets actual justice, no matter no matter who did it, you know.

Yeah, I don't like when it comes down to it, it's just like it's giving her the respect of publicizing like who did this to her and not casting blame in the wrong direction, right? Yeah, because I mean like she's probably up in heaven, upset that like her high school boyfriend's being accused of this and had to suffer for this if he didn't do it, which I believe he didn't.

Yeah, I don't think he did it either. I mean, listen, if the DNA comes back and and someone can definitive definitively say, nah, it was him, then that's different. But until that moment, my gut tells me he didn't.

So yeah, I mean, and I think I heard this on the radio because that's where I originally heard this anyway. I think he was quoted, I think he's on house arrest right now, so he was released from jail, but he still needs to be home and like in one location. And I think he was quoted saying, like, this isn't just like something that you listen to, this isn't like just a podcast, like, this is my life, and like just basically like it's really like good that like he got out, but like this isn't just like something that you hear and then you get over. Like, this is yeah, his story, and like it's it's more personal than we're making it when we just talk about like his name and the case. Like, it's not just a case, it's like it's somebody's like whole life, yeah, yeah. Which is horrible. Like, it's horrible that this man lost like so many years of his life. Was he he's gotta be like 38 now, right? He was like 18 when he was put in jail. He's like one or two years younger than me. Yeah, I was gonna say it's been like 24 years, yeah. Because they've been just 20.

They grab their graduating class of 99, and I graduated in 97. Wow, so it's it's like I think about it like that. Like had I lost all those years, never even got to graduate high school and lost all those years of my life. Like, that's it's so sad, it really is sad, and especially for something that you know you say you didn't do, yeah. But but hopefully the state has um an open investigation, at least according to them, into those other people. Hopefully, there's an actual and truthful resolution soon. I know I'll be happy if that happens. Same.

So after we see Hattie pass away, well, we we see her dead body laying in bed. Um, yeah, we never see her alive. No, um, the episode opens with Nate reading Charlotte Light, which is like the book, right? And Charlotte Light and Dark. And we see that Nate would rather read about Brenda than listen to her bitch about her client. And it's so true because she's like having a conversation with him in the kitchen about her client, and he's just like so. He's like uh Charlotte Light and Dark.

So yeah, I I mean I would be in that situation.

Well, first David talks to her and he's like, What are you doing? And she's like, Well, I think I'm gonna organize a cabinet. So he's like, Um, okay, you okay? Yeah, okay, have a good day. And then later, Claire leaves for school and she's still just standing there. She must have like arms of steel because how is it not shaking? That pot looked heavy. Yeah, I mean, if you just hold your arms out, they're gonna start to burn. Yeah, do you remember a certain uh what do you call it? A pal, um, the the gym teacher.

He used to do contests with them and make them all hold their arms out to see who could do it the longest because it's hard. I'm not saying it was right, I'm just saying that's what he did.

Oh boy, what a fun special to have that day. Damn, yeah. Anyhow, anyway, so foreshadowing a little bit. You remember the part like later on in the episode where she's like, I found the jar of baby food. Like, do you think that happened? And that's why she was so in shock in the kitchen.

Yeah, because later, like you see her, she has everything from the cabinets like all over the kitchen, and you see her grab something out, and she just stares at it, and and then you realize that it was the baby food.

Yeah, well, she uses those arms of steel later on, but okay, yeah. So Nate picks up his car and learns that he doesn't have to pay thanks to Nate Senior's unconventional business practices. This is what I meant by I don't know if I said it on the pre-show, if I said in the beginning of this episode, that this episode for the series and for this season especially really turns the key for the rest of the season. Like this unlocks, like this episode unlocks so much, especially with Nate noticing the malpractices within like the finances of the business. And so intrigued, Nate goes home and digs around the business of records, and he sees that it's not just one place that Sand is paid off, it's multiple places and investigates. But we'll hold off on that. Um, Mr. Jones meets with David regarding service services regarding his wife like passing away. And while David offers a double plot, Jones then just threatens him. He's like, Boy, is this part of your scheme to sell me two plots? Like, and he's just getting so like defensive with David.

It like that whole thing was funny, it really was like like he's going through like the most emotional and like nerve-wracking time of his life, yeah. But his reaction was kind of funny, yeah. And so you remember in the last episode when Ruth was like, but you have to come to church with me, and then we see like David going to church with Ruth, yeah. So they follow up on that, and David's still going to church with Ruth. So David and Ruth are leaving church, and yo, our best friend shows up, fucking Tracy, Link in arms with David, talking about like his girlfriend, and yeah, she's like his fiance, and Ruth is like fiancing.

David's like, yeah, actually, we broke up, it's a sore subject, and he tries to pull her away, and she goes, Ow, you're hurting me. Shut the fuck up, Tracy. But this time she only introduced herself as Tracy Blair, she didn't she didn't use her second name, Montrose, whatever.

Like, I like how this show takes the little side characters and like actually gives them like full fucking like plots, you know, yeah, like Tracy. So I'm just saying, like, she's not the only one, and I like the fact that the show does this, but no spoilers, it's fine. Okay, so now he has to deal with Tracy, and while he's like pulling her aside to talk to her, Hiram shows up and he tells Ruth that he misses her. Yeah, yeah.

Um David, when David comes back, I mean, Ruth is just kind of like whatever about it. But then she says, you know, I hope because she she mentions that she hadn't seen him in church and he said that he was given her space. And Ruth says that she hopes that he hasn't been sacrificing on her part. Which I feel like Ruth meant that. But I don't know, it's it's hard to read Ruth sometimes. Yeah.

Like you think you know her, like you think she's so predictable, and then all of a sudden, like her behavior totally changes or her opinions totally change. It's so weird. And we kind of we get a little bit of examples at towards the end of the episode, but when they okay, but when David comes back, like after fucking shaking off the funeral whore and now the church whore, he he sees her talking with Hiram, and then he realizes who he is. He's like the hairdresser, and he gets pissy because he calls him son, yeah, and he gets pissy and is like, I'm gonna go get the car. Shut the fuck up, David. Your mother's a grown-ass woman, she can do what she wants and who she wants, but anyway, yeah, especially him leading his double life, yeah, exactly. Like you're in no position, you straight up lied about why you wanted to be a deacon, you're lying to ever basically everybody that you know about your love life, yeah, but you want to like judge her, at least she could be honest about it. Yeah, she had the goods to tell you.

Yeah, I mean, like, we'll see Ruth and Hiram again, which is nice because I kind of like how Hiram is with Ruth a lot. Like, I I think I think they're good, their interactions were always good. But back at the house, Claire gets woken up by Mr. Jones pounding on the door, and she tries to explain to him that like he should come back at a later time, like when her brothers are home. And he like sticks his foot in the door, and then he's like, Help, help, a white woman is hurting an elderly black, yeah. And then he's but mind you, he's like, open the door, bitch, or some shit. Like, yeah, and she's sorry, you know what? Like, fuck this, and like he walks in, like demanding to see his wife, and like seriously, fuck no, hell fucking no, hell no.

There's no excuse, there's no excuse for like being an asshole to this person who she fucking tells you she lives there, she tells you that nobody is home to help her, and you demand to come in. But anyway, so Brenda shows up and she finds that Mr. Jones is asleep, like on the couch in the like showing room, which is like on the main level, but like on Claire and like clutching her hand, and so she's like, I can't even like he's he's alive, yeah.

But then Claire says she'll change, and Brenda sits with him, she has a moment with him, and she, you know, she just like apologizes about his wife, and they make like a little bit of small talk, and then they're like, Are you gonna be okay here alone? Why are they leaving this man alone? That's kind of just this is ballsy. This is their house, though. Yeah, like I get that it's the funeral home and all that, it's a business, but it's also their house, their private space. Why are you leaving a fucking stranger in your private space?

After the scene, we see that David is doing like community outreach where he's like feeding the poor or something, and he's doing it through the church, and you know, the the two other side characters just happen to be there, Tracy and Hiram. And David like looks at both of them, he's like, What the fuck? Like, fuck my life, man. Like, I have to be doing this dumb fucking bullshit deacon service. These two assholes, like, I don't want to deal with her, and I don't want to look at him, right?

Well, as as they're working, working Tracy is talking his ear off, and she she mentions like whatever recipe she brought that she got the idea from her honeymoon in Brazil, and then she goes on to say that they're the most beautiful people in the world, and that they're like mongrels and and beasts, and I'm like, because she's like and all that crossbreeding, and I'm just like holy fucking shit. How could you possibly just insult an entire fucking country, race of people, culture, whatever, and then call them beautiful at the same time, and like you're trying to compliment them, but you're calling them beasts and mongrel and and talk about cry holy fucking shit, Tracy.

I was waiting for David to scream again, like how he did episode one, and then he didn't, and I was just like, Oh right, and then like right after he's done dealing with her fucking shit, then Hiram is like, Hey, uh, like, can you help me talk to your mom? He's he was like, fuck my life right now, like just shoot me, somebody shoot me.

Yeah, now the story goes back to Nate, which I'm really happy about because I like Nate's storyline in this episode. So Nate's on a journey to track down the people from the ledger with questionable records, and so like I was saying earlier, like he noticed that people were kind of like paid in full. They had they had like little red stars. Yeah, it was like it said paid, but then there was some kind of like like note next to it, or some kind of like annotation that like made it different from everybody else. So he was tracking down some of those people, and the first person that he meets with is Mrs. Wilcox, and she proceeds to fuck with his head about you know, knowing knowing um Nate Singer, and then just like here.

She calls him a cook. Yeah, he was so funny and he was proud of you, and Nate's so funny. He's like, No, no, I'm Nate, not David. Yeah, and she's like, No, I know the world ran off.

Like your father wishes like he did something like that, he admires you for that. And Nate is just taken back and she goes, You know, she's like, I hope you don't find this strange. Can I see your license? Yeah, but she does, and then she goes, Wait, I'm sorry, what were you gonna say?

Oh no, no, yeah, no, because when I think he asks her, you know, what was the arrangement or whatever, and then she then she asks, and he's just like, Okay. And then after she sees his license, she hands him a baggie of weed, and she's like, Yeah, this was his month's supply. And he's like, My dad didn't smoke. She's like, Not in front of you, he didn't. Nate is like, Okay, he he just he just doesn't even know what to do with himself, and then it gets worse.

Then he goes to visit a restaurant owner that um that Nate Sr. like buried the restaurant owner's wife like seven years ago, I think he said. And he learns that his dad has been well technically renting out their back room. They had like a spare room that used to be their storage room. Um, but yeah, like the being that Nate Sr. like wrote off the expenses for the funeral, he has like a rent-free space in the back of his restaurant. And the restaurant owner said that he used to come in, like, you know, like they wouldn't see him for months at a time, and then they would see him every day, and they didn't know what he did back there.

And Nicolai is very flirty with her, and so we pick back up on that, so don't forget it, but we're gonna drop it for a second because back at Brenda's, Claire notices the book, Charlotte light week day and night, light and dark, like light and dark, light and dark. I knew it. I was like, the words aren't coming. Um they're bringing in the chest, right? So, like now, Claire's at Brenda's and she notices the book, and she starts like gushing over, and she was like, My friends and I used to be into this like three summers ago. Like, have you read it? And while Claire's like freaking the fuck out over the book, and Brenda's just like, Yeah, okay, whatever, okay.

And he's like, What look? And she's like, the sex look. And she clearly like says it. And then he says something to her. And I forgot what it was, but she literally fucking slaps him in the face. Yeah, she uses that, like that pot strength, the strength from holding the pot in the kitchen. And she uses those muscles to slap him in the face. And then she does one of those things where she likes I love when they do this in shows, where they have somebody slap someone in the face and then they hold their hand to their mouth, like, oh what did I just do? And then he holds his cheek, like, did that really happen? That shit's so dumb. But they did that. It was just really like funny to see that like cliche reaction from both of them. And um, and then Mr. Jones, like in the back, is like, I could tell you're the lady in charge because you're wearing red. Yeah. And she's like, This was the only thing clean. Yeah, and like right before the camera flashes, he like pulls her in to make out and grabs her boob. He's like something to remember me by. That should be noted, okay, because we we gotta pick that up at a different time. Okay. That night after David like sends Rika home and he goes back out, he picks up a one-night stand, right? Finally, David's getting the D. And David, um, he says his name is Jim. He says his name's not David, he said his name is Jim, and he's like a lawyer from Boston, right? And then, like, the guy that he picks up is like, Oh, are you in the industry or blah blah blah? And like, and you could tell David's like he wants to be there mentally, but he's not there because apparently, like you could tell they were like having a conversation or something before yeah, he was so disengaged. Yeah, he wasn't remembering anything about him, the guy that he picked up, like what he did for work or anything like that. And right, obviously, like you could tell that was part of their conversation, excuse me. I burped.

Like, that was his he's so detached, yeah. He's really cold in that sense, and so I mean, I would have worried about that too, but first I would have been like, cool, like let's snoop. Yeah, like how do you not want to go through things or lift up these cushions? Like, you never know what you're gonna find, and it's true. So, in that sense, so Nate's packing up for you know, as David said, they get charged rent, and as Nate's packing everything up, he comes across a photo album, and in the photo album, he sees like a bunch of family photos from one of the phone. Yeah, so sweet, and he finds an envelope, and in the envelope, he finds like two sexy photos of Ruth from when she was younger.

I don't know, I have thoughts about that, but by the end of the episode, we see this bond start to develop between them because you just you just get flashing scenes of what people are doing, and so when it flashes to them, you see them sitting outside Brenda's house, apartment, whatever, and they're just like smoking a joint together, they're giggly, and it's nice, it's it's almost like Claire finally got what she wanted, you know. Yeah, I like David, like yeah, yeah. David, David's little flash is I guess I don't know, it looked like he was cleaning up after another event or something, and he sees a cop car drive down the street, and you see that there's a black officer in in the front seat, but you can't see his face because he's turned, and so you think it's Keith, and David's just staring, and then when the cop turns to face, you realize it's not, but you see David stare, and it's like reminding us that he misses Keith. Yeah, and then we get to miss Ruth.

Yes, we do, and you see her go to somebody's door and knock on it, and it's nighttime, yeah, and cue the rain because somehow these moments only happen in the rain, yeah. I don't know what she's wearing at the end because she has her coat on, but it could be that pink shirt. Brenda is practically wearing red every time we see her. Claire wears red the first time we see her, it's in her pajama, and even the funeral whore had like a shade of like a pink um outfit on when she's trying to like harass David. That's clearly intentional. Yeah, it has to be because and then we have Mr. Jones' comment about the lady means business when you wear red. I don't know, I just thought that that was kind of funny that all the women took turns wearing red, none of the men, though, yeah. I mean, the closest we got was like brown, but but yeah, Mr. Jones interacted with all the members of the Fisher family, plus Brenda and Rico, which I thought really spread his love around there, yeah, yeah, and so then the other thing that I noticed is that the one of the underlying things was Nate's internal struggle to have senior proud of him for going off on his own versus coming back and staying and running the business, but then also at one point in his hallucination, it was like, Well, when are you gonna like not care? So it's like care versus don't care, stay versus go. And Nate Nate seems like he just is realizing how lost he is and how much his father's approval actually meant to him. Yeah, like maybe like it's something he never really thought of before. I don't know.

The fact that he smoked and was a kook and was funny is news, and then the fact that he had this whole other room, this whole other uh living space is huge. So I think that I think that that would disturb anybody, but then given the dynamics of the family and how distant and kind of emotionally unavailable they all are with each other, I think it hits harder.
