Hi, and welcome to Sass and Sips. We're doing something a little new here. So, as you know, we finished up on Good Girls, and I am here with my current co-host, hopefully more than contemporary, but we'll see. Go and current husband. Is that gonna change in the future? And we are going to be doing Breaking Bad. So welcome to the new season. And I I hope that you enjoy Breaking Bad. And you know, as usual, right? One of us has seen it, one of us hasn't. So even though Agnes fucking ditched us, I still love her though, I was still able to keep my pick of Breaking Bad because Alex hasn't seen it. So now that I've got that out of the way, I'm Lisa and I'm I'm actually sipping on sangria because it's yummy.
SPEAKER_03And it's summer. And you make bangin' sangria. I mean technically, yeah. What? I said you make bang sangria.
SPEAKER_04Thank you. It's for sale. Text me if you want some. I got student loans to pay. Text me if you want some. All right. My guy, introduce yourself.
SPEAKER_03Um well, I guess since it's not a bonus episode, I guess I'll be Alex for this.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Alex is doing bonus episodes with me too. You know he loves me because he's watching Temptation Island for me.
SPEAKER_01You know, and I know she loves me because she's letting me do this in the backyard so I can smoke cigars and drink whiskey.
SPEAKER_04So is my fire still okay?
SPEAKER_01Uh fire's actually it needs more wood because it doesn't feel like it's uh you know I'm so far away.
SPEAKER_04I cut enough wood for you. You sure did. So you're watching this for the first time. You've only obviously seen the pilot.
SPEAKER_01Correct.
SPEAKER_04Do you have any any thoughts, any hot takes?
SPEAKER_01Um do you want like a synapsis on my thoughts or just anything that like stood out to you? I mean, it's just just episode-wise, it's just a you know, middle-aged man struggling in life, trying to survive.
SPEAKER_04I mean, we can relate. And on top of that, I'm not middle-age, you know, he gets a cancer diag. He turned 50.
SPEAKER_01I am not aware.
SPEAKER_04And I hate to break it to you.
SPEAKER_01Still not there.
SPEAKER_04But we could see it. We are we are right there.
SPEAKER_03You are right there.
SPEAKER_04I am still a little bit away. And you are five months behind me. I'm still a little bit away. Only five months behind me. Okay, all right. Still not there yet. But because of those five months, you and I were born in different decades. Correct.
SPEAKER_01I never lived in the 70s.
SPEAKER_04Whatever. Respect your elders, okay? How did you enjoy it? How did you enjoy the pilot?
SPEAKER_01Uh, it was a as far as you know, for TV, good episode.
SPEAKER_04Um I can see you now.
SPEAKER_01A little weird in the fact that uh, you know, how he went from you know zero to a hundred, but um it's in in one sense I can kind of understand it because you know, when you are let's just say, when you're a man just trying to provide for your family and you're just getting kicked and kicked and kicked, and you know, you know, you just reach a point where it's like the mundane is I don't think men I don't think men have a lock on that.
SPEAKER_04I think that I think that there comes a point where people in general have just felt like fuck this shit. Like I've I've had it, you know? Like I just what is gonna happen? I'm gonna die, oh well, like you know.
SPEAKER_01But for the sake of the episode or for the show, it just seems like, you know, it's he is the breadwinner, um, working two jobs. She is, I guess, selling stuff on eBay or something, like to make ends meet. We don't I I mean, yeah, you know, it's the pilot, so I don't know she's obviously a writer or you know, aspiring to be a writer, and that's obviously not what's paying the bills, and he's a teacher, which you know we all know that doesn't pay anything.
SPEAKER_04Nearly enough, right?
SPEAKER_01I mean, he obviously has he's talented because you know he contributed to a Nobel Prize. So he he obviously has something where he's smart enough to or he had some aspirations to be in in the science field for for real. Whatever happened, he basically is just a science teacher at the same school that his son attends.
SPEAKER_04And his son has uh cerebral palsy, so you know that comes with this own set of challenges, you know, not challenges, right? There's financial challenges, there's obviously kids or dick challenges, so and the wife, Skylar, is pregnant. So not only are you 50, you just found out you got cancer, your kid uh has cerebral palsy, but now you're about to be a daddy again. I mean, throw me down a flight of fucking stairs.
SPEAKER_01You just turned 50, your wife is is I think barely 40 or just about to be 40, I believe it is.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, she's she's almost 40.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she's about to be 40. And you you know, you're a fucking science teacher with a bunch of in high school at that.
SPEAKER_04You know what's crazy is that like our age bracket, like some of us are still having kids. Some of us have grandkids, and some of us have like kids somewhere in the middle. And it's wild because it'd be like the next person you went to school with, and like your kid has a kid, and and their kid is just turning a year, and you're like, oh, shoot me. Well, I mean, we we both have no our kids are like in the middle.
SPEAKER_01We both have friends and or family that is like, okay, um, you're about to have a kid, but you're also a grandparent, and your kids are 20 something years old. It's like, wait, what?
SPEAKER_04Well, somebody I grew up with, he's he's like a year and a half older than me. His kid's about to be a year. Or just or just turn a year. Like I like kids that can wipe their own asses. I like kids that can go to the supermarket and I'm counting the minutes until they can go to the liquor store. Two years. We got designated drivers. What?
SPEAKER_01We do. Well, it except for the fact that a year and a half our kid will not do it for us.
SPEAKER_04She will she will. She will. She won't want to. But she will. You know, she she she's an egg. You know, she's hard on the outside, soft in the middle. Is there a reason that you never watched this sooner or when it was on?
SPEAKER_01Uh I am the type of person where when a show is overhyped, it just kind of turns me off to it.
SPEAKER_04But you watch Game of Thrones, and that shit was like hyped up the wazoo.
SPEAKER_01The difference is I read Game of Thrones before it even came into existence.
SPEAKER_04So then why didn't you read Breaking Bad?
SPEAKER_01Is there a novella about Breaking Bad? I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Like no, no, no. Um I'm just being sarcastic. So do you need to read The Handmaid's Tale before I make you watch that?
SPEAKER_01I mean, I started it.
SPEAKER_04It was just You watch like one episode. I know.
SPEAKER_01No, I watched like three or four, but you know what? Shows like that just infuriate me. And I That's the point. I but yeah, it's not like it was just like that show that you try to make me watch. You like it was so creepy and cringy and like just I want to hurt somebody just for the the the like it it just it's just not it just doesn't do it for me. Not saying it's not a good show, it's just like I I I just it just brings me to a level where it's just wasn't for you. It yeah, it just doesn't it was just you was just creepy. Like I it yeah, y he's stalking his girl and then he gets with the girl. I I don't know, like it's just weird.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Maybe I'm just weird.
SPEAKER_04Or that. Or both.
SPEAKER_01Both can be true.
SPEAKER_04Alright. Let's talk about the episode.
SPEAKER_03Shoot.
SPEAKER_04The episode opens, and you're in the desert, there's a pair of khakis blowing in the wind, and you see Walter White, but you don't realize it, you you might not know it's Walter White, he's only wearing like underwear and a gas mask. Jesse is like with his gas mask slumped over in the RV. After he drives to like behind a rock, behind a big rock, he gets out, he's got a gun, and you see him pointing in the distance because you hear sirens, and then he points it at himself, he pulls the trigger. It doesn't, you know. He's leaving a message on a video camera. Well, right, I mean, uh unless unless it's like woo, let's lead up to that point, you know. He's he's got the camcorder and he's leaving a message to his wife and his son, and you know you get the opening credits. Three weeks earlier you find out it's his 50th birthday, you know, the guy like this little house in Albuquerque. His wife makes him his breakfast with his veggie bacon that spells 50.
SPEAKER_03Is that what it is?
SPEAKER_04Is it still spelling when it's numbers?
SPEAKER_03I said I I could barely tell that it said 50, but yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was supposed to be 50.
SPEAKER_02Um is it still called spelling?
SPEAKER_04What do you call it then?
SPEAKER_01You know what? That's a that's a good fucking question.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01I would just say it says fifty, not spelling, since it's not you know alphabetical.
SPEAKER_04So it's all of them having breakfast. There's some banter because uh the son, Walt Jr. doesn't want to eat the turkey bacon.
SPEAKER_03Nobody should eat turkey bacon.
SPEAKER_04I the only time we should eat turkey bacon is if there were no more pigs left. No, no, no, no, no. I mean, turkey bacon is delicious. Everyone stay away from regular bacon. It's terrible. It doesn't taste good, it's really bad for you. Eat the turkey bacon. Go now. Pause this episode, get the turkey bacon, come back and finish. So you don't want regular bacon, not at all. It's terrible. Anyway, so so Walton Wolf Jr. after that, they you know, head to school because he's he also attends a high school that Walter White works at. And he's a chemistry teacher, and he explains that chemistry is the study of change as well as matter. And I think that that's I I think that one of this one of the things that this show does really, really well is the writing, but more than that is the cinematography of it. When you watch this show, I feel like the way they purposefully use color and distance and contrast it's it's really, really done well. Okay, I got my piece out. Anyway, after school, Walt has a second job, he's a cashier at a car wash and his boss Bogdan is an asshole. He gets home and his wife has organized a surprise party. We meet Skylar's sister, Marie, who's also kind of a fucking bitch, and her husband, Hank, who's the agent and it's the ultimate fucking blowhard. Like he's the kind of person that I need to take in short increments. Like, I don't know how anybody can be married to him.
SPEAKER_01Hank? Well, he's just typical alpha douchebag, you know, I I hate to say, but like, you know, I have friends that are cops and they're like, you know, I have some that are that are like that.
SPEAKER_04And I have friends that are cops that are not like a firearm.
SPEAKER_01Well, no, I have friends that are not like that, and you know, they're they are they are a decent human being.
SPEAKER_04So at the birthday Walt has a beer. He he has a beer, and Hank wants to do a toast. He does a toast and then he takes Hank he takes Walt's beer to make the toast with. And like you toast it. And then the next day, uh Walt is put at the car wash, he collapses, he makes sense, and then he comes to find out that he has inoperable lung cancer and has a couple more years to live at best. He goes back to the car wash, and then his boss, Bogdan the Asshole, is like, okay, go do this. And then he's like, you know what? Fuck you, Bogdan, and fuck your eyebrows, okay? I wish I had a boss that could fuck your eyebrows.
SPEAKER_01Well, you he you you also forgot that he, you know, basically had like some sort of episode after seeing the girl in the green dress. I mean, I I I don't know if it was a heart attack or like they don't like really say like he he walks out and he sees the girl, he admires, and then he falls face first into the onto the ground.
SPEAKER_04Oh and then like wait a minute, is there a party when they go when they go um Walt and and she's giving him like a hand like her eBay listings and and he was like or was it this night when he comes home? Say that again they're laying in bed handjob but on her lap and still looking up at the listings of the sad hand job. And she's like oh the reserve is met.
SPEAKER_01You're talking about the sad hand job.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. And then she's like, come on, come on, oh there it is. And I'm like, is she excited about eBay? Or is she excited about his little No, she was excited about eBay. She was not excited about you're looking at this and then it's kind of like, oh, that's just like it's kind of sad and energy to make the kid.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but it like if you just to that moment, all you see is like the depression that he's under, the stress, the kind of sorry existence that they are living.
SPEAKER_04Like, you know, well, I I Right, and actually, I don't know if that was after he came back from the hospital or after he came back from the the other day of work after his birthday party. I don't remember which night it was.
SPEAKER_01No, that was the night of his birthday. It was the night of his birthday party, like after the birthday party.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So he, you know, they have the birthday party. Hank offers to give him a ride along. He is scared about holding the gun. He feels uncomfortable, you know.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, because the kid had it. He's like, Yeah, feel that, feel that. And he's like, Oh, yeah, that's like Mick Jagger drinking a glass of milk. Him holding the gun. I'm not advocating for smoking, but the screen froze a little while you were blowing out, and it made like a cool effect.
SPEAKER_01Um, so he, you know, they they go through the birthday party, you know, and that's when they go to the scene in the bed, and she just kind of like, you know, oh, it's your birthday. I guess I'll give you a handy as I scroll through eBay and try to sell this product, and then turns to him and is like, what's wrong with you? And it's just like kind of indicative of like the sorry state of his life where like it's just like like the the effort for him isn't there. Work is just a struggle. Second job, he has a douchebag of a you know of a boss, you know, constantly making him do things that he's not there to do. He's not there to wash cars or you know, or or to shine tires. He's there just to work the register and get a paycheck and just leave. Because even prior to the whole the the birthday party, she said, you are only supposed to work to five. You leave at five, you do not, you do not do anything past that. And of course, because he's you know a pushover. He just ends up getting to his own birthday party late.
SPEAKER_04And and then, like, on top of it, it's literally the first thing she fucking says to him. You're like, you were supposed to be here, whatever. Like this poor guy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it it's just kind of a it's a billionaire.
SPEAKER_04I mean, if it was you, I would be pissed because you would be out at a bar with your friends, like, oh, they just wanted to take me out for a drink. Oh, and we just wanted to go have a cigar. Not Walter White. Walter White was getting bossed around by Bogdan and his eyebrows.
SPEAKER_03Just saying. But he's he's he's working two jobs.
SPEAKER_01Depressed, he's working his ass off, happy.
SPEAKER_04He is working his ass off.
SPEAKER_01Just miserable in life. And the first thing that that that happens is like he gets a sad hand job, and she doesn't even finish because she gets so excited about her listing, and then you go to the next day where you know they don't show the school life, they show him going into work, getting forced again to work the car wash section.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_01And he passes out. And even in the ambulance, he's he's desperately trying to get out. And the only reason he's trying to get out is because
SPEAKER_04That shit costs a lot.
SPEAKER_01His insurance isn't good.
SPEAKER_04Nope. That's why we don't call for ambulances either. I had to go to the ER. I called an Uber. I called a lift.
SPEAKER_01So he's in the he's in the the the doctor's office and they're basically telling him he has lung cancer. He only has two to four years to live, and he's not even he immediately shuts down and is worried about the mustard stain on the doctor's jacket.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So it shows that his mental state prior to being diagnosed with death was just he didn't he was just he was just done.
SPEAKER_04He's just doing the motions. No. And I think that there's never there's never gonna be a point where you don't think like he loves his family.
SPEAKER_03But I think that He does everything for his family.
SPEAKER_04But also feel like this is miserable and I hate this. He's uh he's just a He's just a a person going through the motions with no ambition, no I mean I hope they get Well, I don't know if it's not any like no ambition, but you know, ambition can be costly. He he can't maybe is if his ambition is to get his own Nobel Prize, how can he focus on research and pull in a paycheck? You can't. It's very hard. So that's what I'm saying. Like we don't know.
SPEAKER_01Maybe maybe he has a lot of ambition, but he can't pursue it because he Well, that's why I'm hoping that they show maybe what his what he wanted in life, at least an aspect of what he wanted in life before he got to where he was. You know? So I just I hope they that that character building and you know kind of showing that because it it's kind of sad if they just leave him as just this desperate, like basically vanilla person who, you know, kind of just gets a diagnosis and then just decides to just start making math.
SPEAKER_04Finally, uh they go into the house and you see Bessie climbing the upstairs window of the house next door.
SPEAKER_03I heard window, all right. Um, and that was about it.
SPEAKER_04Okay, yeah. He was climbing out the window. All right. However, Walt recognizes Jesse because he used to be his student. They make eye contact, and Jesse is kind of like, oh fuck. But he gets in his car, he takes off, and the two big bad DEA officers, I guess, never even realized that the car parked behind them, said Captain Cook.
SPEAKER_01But and that it wasn't there. And it wasn't there that when they exited the investigation.
SPEAKER_04Right. Like, not one person noticed. All right. The next day, actually, no, I think it was the same day, J uh Walt shows up at Jesse's house and is like, so let's make a deal. And then Jesse's like, fuck, are you talking about? Like Mr. White, like, no. Like, obviously he's not in high school anymore. But I guess when you only know your teacher as Mr. or Mrs. So and so, like, you have to then call them that for the rest of your life.
SPEAKER_01Like, can you imagine if you went clubbing and you ran into your high school teacher? Like, or like, I mean, with the.
SPEAKER_04If we ran into our principal, I'd be like, oh, hi, Mr. Bruckner. Like, I wouldn't that be like, oh, what's up, so that's what I mean. You're never going to I mean he's long dead, but you're if I ran into him these days, I might say something else. Like, oh my god!
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_04But you know, I digress. Because he was like 80 when we were in high school. So if he was alive now, he'd be about 145 years old.
SPEAKER_02I don't think he was that old. He was just old to us.
SPEAKER_04So he tries to convince Jesse to be his partner. He realizes how much money can be made doing this, and being that he's a chemistry teacher, he's like, all right, cool. Like I have the skill, you have the connection, you know, match made in heaven. And Jesse Jesse's a little like, uh what? But but you know, Walter is like, do it or I'll fucking turn you in. Like, like no. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So I mean, yeah.
SPEAKER_04The next day, Walt steals uh shit ton of chemistry supplies from his school, and he he is like a little kid. He runs right over to Jesse's house to be like, and look at what I got. Oh, and look at this one. And then Jesse's like, oh no, I cook in. No, you don't. No, you don't. Like he.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, listen, I I've done labs before, and first of all, those beakers are fucking expensive.
SPEAKER_04Oh my god, yes, they are. Yes, they are.
SPEAKER_01They are fucking expensive. Those are not cheap, bro.
SPEAKER_04But also, like, I respect his passion. I was never good at chemistry. I had to repeat that shit.
SPEAKER_03But I respect his I never had a chance to, so you could go now.
SPEAKER_04With the loan in my name, no problem.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04But it and then he's like, all right, so come on, let's cook. And Jessica, the fuck are you like? He's like, I don't shit where I eat. Like, we're not doing that here. I'm not cooking at my house. Like, go cook in your house. He's like, uh-huh. So they decide they're gonna buy an RV and cook in a desert. I mean it's a good plan, right? You know?
SPEAKER_03I mean, it's the smartest plan.
SPEAKER_04So there's a scene in between like the Walter and Jesse scenes where they're in the clothing store. Because Walt gives Walt takes all the money he has out of his like savings account and gives it to Jesse to buy the RV. But then he's like, Alright, you gotta go because like I gotta go. And he's shopping with his wife or his son. Now, remember the kid is got cerebral palsy, so he he needs a little help walking. So Walt ends up also having to go and help him try on the pants, and when he comes out, and Skylar is like, oh no, like I mean, he's in high school, she's a little too overbearing, but it's like, oh those are nice. Um you know, if you like we should get them, and then she's like, Oh, I hear like so such and such jeans are in for you know, like the skaters wear them, and he's like, Do I look like I'm gonna skate?
SPEAKER_01I mean the kid's an asshole, but I I I respect his I I I respect his uh I mean if you can't laugh at yourself because but like you know, you can't laugh at anybody else if you can't laugh at yourself.
SPEAKER_04But there's some dickhead kids in the store and they're making fun of him, like, you know, oh mommy's in, you know, mommy's boy, whatever. And Skylar's like, I'm gonna go say something.
SPEAKER_01Which is the biggest fear for all high school all high school kids.
SPEAKER_04Kids in general, right? Going shopping with it. At that point, you don't even yeah. Not my kids. My kids love me. They just they don't like shopping. Or maybe they just don't like shopping with me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, why don't you why don't you why don't you why don't you go with our oldest and go pick out clothes with her? And and she would duck if she even saw somebody from the city.
SPEAKER_04No, she wouldn't, but she just also wouldn't want to go shopping with me. You know how I go shopping with them now? Uh-huh. I give them my credit card. Uh go ahead. Is there a limit? And it was don't go crazy.
SPEAKER_01And even still, they don't even want to spend the money.
SPEAKER_04I know. That's why I said, like, okay, here, just take it. Just go look, go with your friends if you want, like, see if you see something that you like, even if it's just a couple of things. Here and there they do, but barely. They don't let us do shit for them. Anyhow, Skylar wants to go tell them boys about themselves and or Walt or is it Walt that no, Skylar.
SPEAKER_01And then Skylar wants to go and she she she goes and she won and Walt says leave it alone.
SPEAKER_04And then he goes out the back door.
SPEAKER_01She, you know, and then he walks away and she's like, What the what what what what is he well because at first she didn't even think about it.
SPEAKER_04And she's like, Oh, don't worry about them. Like, you know, they're just jealous, or they're just, you know, whatever, blah, blah, blah. And then you hear the bell ring, that's when he comes in from the front, and then that's when she's like, What the fuck? Like, holy shit, what's happening? And he he like, what do you call that when you kick the back of the knee?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he kicked it. Oh, I thought there was a name.
SPEAKER_04I thought there was like a a name for that move.
SPEAKER_03Not uh not that I can recall.
SPEAKER_04And then and then like, you know, the biggest pulley of them all goes down. And Walt is like, oh, you like it? You like it? So he's like, go ahead. When he gets up, he's like, go ahead, punch me. You get one punch, you better make it good. Come on, come on. And then the bullies, you know, run out the door. Skylar and Walt Jr. are just kind of like, who's that guy? What just happened?
SPEAKER_01Cause they're like I thought, I th you I thought that scene would would have turned around and she would have like drove him home and were like, I am sucking the fuck out of you right now because what you just did was like like you have me gushing. Like the baby almost came out because that's how you know.
SPEAKER_04She almost babysit out. Yeah, but no. Nope.
SPEAKER_03But they didn't even talk about that.
SPEAKER_01Like, they didn't even like like there was no context after the scene, you know, for that happening. Like she didn't address it, like there was nothing. It was just like, you know, he you know, he's obviously he's protecting his his son and whatever, but it's more like I listen, I have nothing to lose. Knock me out. Go ahead, knock me out.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it's clear I'm dying. Whatever you do to me doesn't mean shit. And I'm starting to cook meh, so fuck life.
SPEAKER_04Walt and Jesse take the RB to the desert, and Walt this is gonna be the first time that they cook. Walt strips his under, he's got like aprons and stuff, and Jesse is like what the fuck are you doing? Odor on your clothes. Like, no.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we don't need evidence of what we're doing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01Like grow up.
SPEAKER_03So imagine if he had uh, you know, an iPhone, like even live streaming.
SPEAKER_01So, and and thinking about it, this is this is 2008. So they're on camcorders and you know they they're not even you know they have cell phones, but you know, obviously at this time the cameras on cell phones and it's just like he's trying to record. Can you imagine if this was like this was done the narrative was like in this day and age, it's like he would have been on like Instagram live, like, yo, we cooking up some meth, you know, with with like, likes, likes, likes, likes, likes, likes, like TikTok chip. Yeah, it's like yo, I got that glass right now, okay. Yo, my teacher is burning shit up right now.
SPEAKER_04We could already buy porn. Why not meth?
SPEAKER_01He would he would it would have been like a TikTok shop, yo, you need that glass. I got you, bro.
SPEAKER_04After they cook the batch, it's it's actually obviously really good, really pure. So Jesse is like, holy shit. Walt wants him to to sell. So he takes it to Emilio's cousin, Crazy A. Emilio is the guy who got busted when Hank and Gome went on their raid. So Jesse goes there and wants to sell and Crazy A is kind of like you made this? He's surprised because you know Jesse cooks up some shit. Come to find out that was his name, Emilio? Yeah, Emilio. Yes, who who got busted, was already out of jail and is there and now thinks that Jesse set him up. Or no. Wait. Does he think that he set him up yet?
SPEAKER_01So he thinks he was dimed out because he was across the street miraculously at the time that the DEA comes.
SPEAKER_04But I know that he thinks that because of he saw Walt in the car. But does he he saw Walt in the car hold on when he saw he saw Walt listen to me. He saw Walt in the car when he got busted, but then when he saw Walt in the RV, that's what I'm saying. So is that when he thought that Jesse set him up?
SPEAKER_01This is way after.
SPEAKER_04All right, let's just skip this whole part because I don't even know.
SPEAKER_03Hey all right, but if you leave it to me, I will give you the rundown. Doesn't even matter. Okay. But I think the hearing you lead, because I remember. Alright. Well, according to this theory. Okay. Uh-huh. So he goes into he goes to sell to Crazy A.
SPEAKER_01Crazy A goes, there's no way you you created, you, you made this. There's no way you cooked this yourself. You know, he goes, you know what? And it's it's kind of funny that you were out dipping into the lady across the street when Emilio got busted. He goes, Well, what do you you know, he's like, there's no way he's still trying to act like the street kid, and he really it was kind of obvious from the from the get that he's he's not street savvy. He's he learned how to cook, what have you, but he's not he's not from the streets. He has some street knowledge, but he he went into the lines then and didn't realize what was happening. So he says, Well, if if Emilio's saying that, tell him I'm gonna fuck him up because I would never dime him out, I would never do this. Emilio comes down the stairs and says, Go ahead, fuck me up.
SPEAKER_03Where'd you get this from?
SPEAKER_01So they go out to the desert where Walter Hartwell White is, you know, cooking up some uh a new batch, and things go south from there.
SPEAKER_04Well, but that's when he sees, right.
SPEAKER_01That's when he sees That's when he sees that's when he sees Walter when I got busted. Walter, correct. So then they already had the they already had the notion that he dimed them out, but when they saw Walter, they made an immediate assumption that he absolutely did, and maybe, you know, I guess they thought he brought him there to to be the new cook. He wanted Emilio out of the way. But even in hindsight, it doesn't make sense. Why am I gonna get Emilio out the way and then still sell to his cousin?
SPEAKER_04Right. So immediately Jesse is like, run. Jesse immediately trips on a rock and hits his head. So he's he is out.
SPEAKER_01And well, back to back to your thing, he goes, Mr. White, run. So he's still like, he's still stuck on, he can't even call him Walter. He's just like, Mr. White, you need to go. Teacher, run.
SPEAKER_04So Walt, in an attempt to get out of it, is like, what if I show you how to cook it? Here, you can have my recipe. So then they're like, Oh, okay. So as he's cooking, you know, he does some chemistry and he makes a gas that's gonna pretty much kill them. So he he does that, runs out of the RV and shuts the door while they're in there so that they can get affected by the gas. Mind you, they're like shooting at the door, and even you were like, why are they shooting so high? Because if he shot them, then there wouldn't be a series.
SPEAKER_01No, I know, but it just it, you know, the as as the girls say, TV magic. If you shoot at a door, you know the person's not gonna stand upright on the door, you shoot low. Why would you I mean again TV magic?
SPEAKER_04So once they're down, Walt gets a gas mask for himself, a gas mask for Jesse, and loads him up into the RV, and then this is where now it starts to lead into where it started. Now you hear the sirens coming, you you see him pull the RV in behind that rock, and there he is in his underwear. He puts a shirt on, his shirt was hanging, the p the pants blew off, so he puts the shirt on, but he's there in the shirt and underwear, holding a gun. And after the whole thing with the camcorder and him unsuccessfully trying to kill himself, you see that it's just a couple of fire engines and they just passed because when Crazy 8 and Emilio showed up, they had a cigarette and they flicked the cigarette and it started a brush fire. I forgot about that part. So that's where the fire trucks were headed to the brush fire. And after all that, Walt goes back home, crawls into bed with Skylar. Walt, is that you? Who the fuck else is it?
SPEAKER_01Walt, I mean, it she that was probably the hardest hard on he's ever had in his whole fucking life. So she did not it it that's that's basically what she was saying. Like, holy fuck, what the like, you know, I know what she was trying to say is mediocre sex.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And she's like, All right, Skylar, easy there, you're already pregnant.
SPEAKER_04Relax.
SPEAKER_01And well, that goes to the the you know, because he apparently is avoiding sex because he's scared of the baby, and you know, they kind of touched upon that like. With the sad hand job, and you know, he was just like, Yeah, it goes back to I don't give a fuck. Like, I'm just going to satisfy Primal and just not give a fuck. Which is, I guess, where the show is leading, where he basically is just, you know, he knows he's gonna die and he just wants to make enough money, I I'm assuming, to provide for his family before he he kicks a bucket because it's still a secret.
SPEAKER_03Nobody knows that he's dying.
SPEAKER_05Are you ready to do trivia?
SPEAKER_01Um shoot for the stars. I'll probably get all of them wrong.
SPEAKER_04Oh no, I'm not gonna ask you questions, I'm just gonna tell you trivia. Somebody else can ask you a question. This episode, extended and uncentered on home video, after airing for the first time, AMC edited the episode so it could fit into the hour time slot. But this one is 58 minutes and it's the longest episode of Breaking Bad. Only a few episodes of Better Call Saul exceeded it, but this one is the longest one of Breaking Bad.
SPEAKER_03Why is that? I guess because it's the pilot.
SPEAKER_04The lost pilot.
SPEAKER_01I wonder what I I wonder what they added. Well what they did. So some of this stuff I guess because I didn't watch the original airing.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so when he says like fuck you and fuck your eyebrows, that part gets cut. When Hank asks if he works Why because of the fuck? No, no, no. Uh Hank asks him if you work at the fucking pottery barn. Yeah. And when Amelia says that would be funny line, though. Rata snitch motherfucker. But they basically like those scenes.
SPEAKER_03When introduced basically there was a couple like cutscenes, I guess.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they just cut more out. When introduced for the time, both Walt and Jesse are new down to their underwear and are struggling to get dressed in a hurry. Walt when he was with the RV and Jesse when he was coming out of the window.
SPEAKER_01Also, this episode establishes I mean they put extra attention on those boobs.
SPEAKER_04So this episode also established boobs. I do not her.
SPEAKER_03They were just all right.
SPEAKER_04When this episode also establishes their respective color themes. The first piece of clothing that Walt has put on was his green shirt, and Jesse was wearing his red underwear.
SPEAKER_03Interesting.
SPEAKER_04The show was supposed to be set in Riverside, California. However, Albuquerque was giving incentives to production to film. They were gonna say they were still setting the series in Riverdale. I'm sorry, Riverside, given the area status as the cent as a center of the meth production, but then they would always need to film away from the Sandia Mountains, and so Albuquerque worked out better.
SPEAKER_01I mean, there's a lot of desert.
SPEAKER_04Studio executives wanted the Walter White character to be played by John Q Sack or Matthew Broderick.
SPEAKER_03I couldn't even.
SPEAKER_04But they both turned it down. Originally he was supposed to be 40 years old, but AMC asked them to change it to 50 because they thought 40 was too young for the crisis.
SPEAKER_03Uh, I agree.
SPEAKER_01So And I think that was probably around his age.
SPEAKER_04Probably when they go on the ride along, civilians are not allowed to into DEA vehicles by law.
SPEAKER_05So Yes. What I know.
SPEAKER_01But he's he's a DEA agent, so they can do whatever the hell they want.
SPEAKER_04There was there was an actual DEA agent on set to provide instructions on how to synthesize methamphetamine.
SPEAKER_01I mean, you know, I I will say I it's I know it's TV and you know it makes with good TV, but I also feel like you're giving you kind of like are making people think that, hey, maybe I should try to do this. If I just get the chemistry right, I can make a shit ton of money.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well, I'm sure a lot of people have thought that.
SPEAKER_01I I can guarantee you that people try cooking based on the show.
SPEAKER_04So the cigarette brand, Morley, is a common prop shared by various TV shows. It's a parody of Marlboro, aka Marley, and on the X-Files, where Vince Gilligan was an associate producer and writer, they're the associated, they're the brands associated with the character of the cigarette smoking man.
SPEAKER_01But I thought it was Marlboro.
SPEAKER_04But I will up that trivia and say that in one of the scenes, when you see the cigarette, it does say Marlboro.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, when they when the when it gets thrown into the bush. You see it says Marlboro.
SPEAKER_03Marlboro. Yeah, I that's what I thought it was. Yeah. Um and smoking is bad for you. Do not smoke cigarettes.
SPEAKER_04The frame on Jesse's car around the license plate it reads, Save a Tree, Eat a Beaver.
SPEAKER_03Are you thinking about that? Uh I can say some things.
SPEAKER_01I'm just not going to.
SPEAKER_04And then there's like a continuity error. So it says the whole series is supposed to start on Walt's 50th birthday, which was supposed to be September 7th, 2008. Oh, that's funny. Today is September 7th.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I think he did that on purpose.
SPEAKER_04Um that day, it was a Sunday. So no explanation is given on why Walt and his son would have been on school in school. My guess is that I mean, my But they weren't in school. They were. They went to school that morning. Remember, she woke him up with the 50th birthday.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I don't think no.
SPEAKER_04And then they left to go to school.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So it's either TV magic or she, you know, did it on Friday to keep him in a good mood for the party.
SPEAKER_01It's TV magic. It's he we're just gonna go with TV magic. It's just it's just a easier explanation than logistics.
SPEAKER_04You know, are still the same age after 40 years. TV magic. Anything else that I missed on this episode?
SPEAKER_03Uh let's see.
SPEAKER_01You touched on everything.
SPEAKER_04I like to touch everything.
SPEAKER_01Um The sister's gonna be a problem. She's hateful, jealous, um, which I don't understand. Like, if she's she's basically has a better life. Or so of it if you know her husband's a her husband's a DEA agent, and she's but it feels like she's still jealous of the life that her sister lives, which is struggling, barely able to pay bills, making excuses to collectors about lost checks or, you know, mispayments.
SPEAKER_03Um no, I think we I think we've touched on everything. I guess it's more of a you've already watched how many times have you watched this?
SPEAKER_04Twice.
SPEAKER_03So yeah.
SPEAKER_04I watched it once like by myself and watch it once at Maris.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01Do they touch on like his Nobel Prize contribution?
SPEAKER_04No, I don't think so. I don't really remember.
SPEAKER_01It's just a thing that they just show and then and never I just no, it's just like things like that, like if you want me to be, like I I kinda wanna know those kind of things.
SPEAKER_03It's just like I feel like if they just you have cancer, you're gonna die, I'm gonna be a fucking cook now. And we're just gonna go from there.
SPEAKER_04We're just gonna go from there, yes. He's a cook now, we're gonna go from there. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Well, I don't have anything I guess this is the difference between TV shows.
SPEAKER_04Well, yeah. Yeah. I mean, I don't have anything else for this episode. I'm glad that you at least like seem to enjoy it because you know, it's more fun when you like it.
SPEAKER_01I I mean it is a it it it's a it's a it's a good show. Like it's it's engaging, like you can understand things. So I mean, of course, we're gonna have problems with how things are done, but again, it's a TV fucking show.
SPEAKER_05Right.
SPEAKER_01We're supposed to not care about reality versus TV magic.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but but it could still be a talking point. I mean, comparison. So that's fine. Alright, well, thank you all the and until next time. Oh, don't drink and drive drink responsibly. Get good internet always. And until next time, I'm Lisa.
SPEAKER_01And I'm Alex.
SPEAKER_04And we're out of here.
SPEAKER_01Bye. I didn't know I was supposed to say something. Come on.
