There you go. Alright. So Walkabout is the fourth episode of season one of Lost. As food supplies run low, John Locke emerges as the hunter after the survivors learn there are wild boars near camp. Meanwhile, the survivors realize that they must somehow get rid of the rotting bodies from the fuselage. The flashbacks in this episode depict Locke's plans to get to Australia and participate in a walkabout tour. When we open onto the episode, it's Locke, but it's like a flashback on the island.

It's him as he's waking up from the crash and seeing Madness and Mayhem and all that other fun stuff.

I see you he opens his eyes and he's looking at his foot and his shoe, he's wiggling toes and socks and stuff, and I'm like, why are socks important? Like that was the next thing. So throughout the whole episode, I'm like, why is this dude's sock so important?

Yeah, after you know, it seems so hard to miss.

Then we took up the present time. Well, you know, most present time.

Alright, so let's let's talk about his flashbacks, what we learn in the flashbacks. So we Okay, in the flashbacks, we see that he is working in some kind of office. He gets a phone call where they call him Colonel, and then he gets berated by his manager, Randy, for having a personal phone call at work. He's on his lunch break playing some kind of a board game. Um, I'm not sure what it is. Looks like maybe risk or Right, one of those something along those lines. And here comes Randy again laughing at him for playing a game and talking about his walkabout and saying, you know, that he can't do it.

Right. And I like and as Locke said, his pissette supervisor. I was like, I love it. He's like one of those kids, and I say this, sorry, no offense to it, but he's like one of those kids that gets a low manager position and he thinks he's a CEO.

Um, so yeah. But no, that's just my that's just my take on things.

Yep. And then we we see a scene where he's laying in his bed talking to Helen.

Oh, yeah, that kind of made me sad. He's working at his job. Obviously, it doesn't fulfill him. His one passion is mocked by people. His only companion is a f a phone sex operator. And I'm like, oh, so sad. Because you could tell that this guy has so much put like at this point, like, damn, he's like a decent guy. There's something, you know, no one should have to be just so take what you can give. I think any person should have to just settle.

Period. Yeah. No, but it is sad because he obviously has some kind of feelings for her, and he bought her a ticket to Australia.

The joys of recording with children in the house. Sorry. Um I lost my train of thought. Okay. I'm good. He buys her a ticket to go to Australia with him, but she says that she can't meet customers and that if he stays on the phone any longer, she has to charge him another uh $89.95, I think it was.

I think by that point I was like, oh Yeah. It is I was kinda sad for him.

I was like, Yeah. So as we heard in the teaser clip in the beginning of the episode, there were more going through the fuselage. And that is what leads John to say that they can hunt for food now that the food situation is getting pretty bad. And so in this clip that we're about to play you, this is where everyone finds out about John's craving crazy knife skills.

How'd you get that knife on the plane? Checked it. You either have very good aim or very bad aim, Mr. Locke. His name is Locke.

So what do you think about the the knife throw into Sawyer's chair?

So badass. Um, you know, you know what gets me going. And I'm like, yeah.

Um I I love okay, you know I'm partial to Sawyer, but I love his face where he just sits down, like, whatever, and the knife just comes at his head and he's like, what the fuck?

Well, yeah, and everyone's like something about the knife throwing and the weaponry. I'm like, yeah. Um, but I found it interesting. Everyone's looking at him like he's crazy when he's telling them about how vicious the boars are. And my first remember my first thought was the scene in Hannibal. Have you seen Hannibal?

Oh my god. Okay, so long story short, um, there were wild boars being trained to kill a man by eating them. So they have that ability to literally kill a person. Um, so that's why I started Googling. Like, when was the like when were boars used to kill people? Like was the first time in history that this was documented.

Yeah. Like was the the the Thomas Wright that for the first time in Hannibal? And lost, like, yeah, let's use boars.

But so yeah, that's my um But it could make sense that there's boar on the island.

And we have this whatever thing that killed the pilot the first episode, whatever thing that was.

I know. That was but alright, but that was such a badass scene when he's just like, Soyo's like, oh, so we're just gonna go uh with the one little knife into the magical forest, and he's like, no. And he lifts the blind, and everybody's eyes are just open really wide. Like, what? Who is this guy?

I don't know why everyone is so I don't know why those people rear with him, but he really I would be making friends with him from the get. And speaking of which, making friends, some of their decisions and their reluctance, as we'll see later on that as we progress in the sh of doing common sense things bothers me to no end.

Okay, okay. But now, as a viewer, how did you feel when you saw that moment and you saw like you know, you go from these scenes where he's just this dude hitting an adding machine working on a computer behind a desk to this guy who has some crazy ninja knife skills?

I think it's kinda indicative of most people, actually. A lot of people have jobs, not necessarily careers that they love. A lot of people that have their day life and then they have their real life or their second part of them. Um of course this is TV and things a little bit to the extreme. But I think that's indicative to most people. And and and I I could relate to it on some level.

That being said, you know, it's kind of interesting you say that because I can see how a person can look totally different in a way, if you're not expecting it. Like you have a person, like, imagine a person, your posture changes, your attitude changes, your look changes, there's some glasses, your hair changes. Someone who doesn't want to see the truth, I can see how they can totally not see the opposite front of their face.

Totally see it in a weird kind of way. Like if you think about it, because you look at yourself in the mirror and you're doing your makeup or your hair or whatever, and you find yourself making a weird face, or you know, moving your moving your jaw to do something, you look like a totally different person. Like you're like, doesn't look like me.

Yeah. And people, you know, is respond to body language as much as they do to something like your looking at your face. Um, a person who's has one type of straight up posture, an air of superiority or control. They're looked at differently as a person who seems timid. Claude can't. People don't you don't look at him. Really. So that's just me. Bat to walk about.

Back on the beach, Michael asks Sun if she can look after Walt while he goes on the hike. Which is so ridiculous. I mean, it's like nothing bad about Sun, but there's plenty of people. He picks the one person who's not gonna understand what he says.

Right. That bothered me. I looked at him like, really, dude? Really?

Um Yeah, Kate Kate goes with them because she never misses an opportunity.

Well, you know, she has uh remote, she has a second mission to accomplish. Kate.

Still kind of weary. I'm not weary. Um still I'm okay with Kate. Don't love her, don't hate her, just like meh. Let's see where this goes. I hope she gets more interesting as time goes on. But there's so much potential for this character.

And right now, like they touched upon it, but then you like then you they brought her back down to just indifference. So let's see.

Boon, Boone tells Shannon that the ocean is not gonna take her gold card.

I just think I mean, I still think he's just way too hard on her. And I granted there's I'm sure there's a history, but listen, you guys are stuck on a on a you guys are deserted on an island. I think now is the time to try like start from scratch and try to build something. Yeah, you guys need each other.

Yeah, I I don't like him. Well, well, I am I am team shiny on this. Like, I think there's potential for her to be to do I think there's something there's something new to her. And to be fair and the interest of transparency, I am the judgmental sister. But so I you really can't tell though, but yeah, I am the one. I am the blue, but that's weird, right? I feel I feel for Shannon.

Well then, but then she char she charms no. She cons Charlie Charms Shannon cons Charlie into catching a fish, and this was funny. She's like, Do you know how to fish? And he's like, Well, England's an island, so yeah.

Well, you know what? It's funny you say charmed. It's like four years lip, she's a little charming conny thing. And I I like to say she's using her resources.

Yeah. But he thinks that she's gonna ask him if he was in a band, because that was yeah, I'm not about you. As you know, Charlie was in a band.

They barely mention it, so you know, I can forget sometimes.

Yeah, you know. Towards the end of the episode, Kate comes back with the broken antenna and gives it to Saeed and tells him that they will keep trying. Jack arrives and Kate reveals that Locke was right in the monster's path and probably did not make it. Because as we saw, Locke came face to face with the monster. Um, Jack once again sees the man in the suit and runs into the jungle with Kate at his heels, but instead of the figure, they find Locke who brings with him a dead boar. Oh, we forgot to mention that while they were in the jungle looking for the boar and Locke got knocked down, he calls Kate Helen and give gives her his famous line of uh what is it? Don't tell me what I can't do. Don't tell me what to do. Don't tell me what I can do. Tell me what to do. Don't tell me what I can't do. As the episode ends, um, it's sundown, Claire's reading off the names of the dead and just giving a memorial for all of them. They actually, in the beginning of the episode, they resolve to burn the bodies from the fuselage because they can't sort out everybody's gods, and they have to do something, otherwise they're gonna keep attracting the boar. So they make it a big a big fire at sundown, hoping that the fire will be seen to get them rescued. At sundown, Claire reads off the names of the dead, giving brief bits of trivial information she managed to glean from the documents in the wreckage. The only survivor not attending is Jack, who sits away from the service looking out at the sea. Michael appreciates Loc for hunting the boar and then asks Locke about the monster. But Locke says that he did not see anything. Looking towards the fire, he sees his wheelchair silhouetted against the flame. Because in the last flashback, we learned that Locke has been in a wheelchair for the past four years. So, overall, what did you think about this episode?

So, the beginning episode when they were talking about what they're going to do with the bodies, one of the things that kind of like pissed me off was the fact that they were arguing about doing something in general. Like, obviously, something has to be done with the bodies. Like the boards are coming after these dead bodies in the hot sun, something needs to be done. And I found like the at first I felt like people arguing about the dead bodies, those are people. Well, yes. When I say just toss, like something has to be done. No one's saying, at this point in time, no one's saying how to be done, how it's going to be done rather, but something has to be done. So I'm looking at these people like, wait, what do you expect to like what do you expect? So leave them in there and indefinitely?

That was kind of one of the things that like that first we have to do something with the bodies. But the human beings, duh, like you know, that like that pushback initially was like, well, like I get you on the you're stranded.

I'm glad they decided on something. And I found it interesting that they decided to fire. Um I thought of the Viking funerals. Because, you know, and some of it like that burning of the body isn't sacrilege. It's a, you know, it's a way of you know, it's not disrespectful. I kind of thought I kind of saw it like in my mind's eye, I'm like, oh it'd be nice if they can just make rafts and kind of just like send out the body's ocean. But that was just my my my own little mental picture of that.

It it's really funny you mentioned that. But on one hand, I agree with Said. It's like they're people and you don't know what religion they are or how or what their burial wishes were. But on the other hand, you don't have time for that. These are extenuating circumstances, you know, and at some point right.

And I think at this point, I don't even think it had m maybe it was being like a little jaded, but I don't think Sae's initial pushback, because he pushed back boom without even hearing anything.

So last time I asked you about certain characters. So I want to do that again with you, but I'm just gonna modify it. I'm going to stick to three instead of five. I want to do this person's episode, which would be Locke. Up until now, how do you feel about Locke and have your feelings for him changed after seeing his episode?

Um, I told you guys the very first episode, like Locke is the interesting one. Partly because Terry O'Quinn. Okay, I'm a fangirl. Hi, Terry. Um, but he's it's so funny. He's very interesting. He's an interesting guy. You can't say he isn't. And the scene he saw the creature or whatever it was, I don't know if you remember, but the way his face lit up, like like he sees something that no one else has seen. And I'm like, ooh, what does this mean? What does this mean? I can't wait to find out what this means. And watching future episodes, I still come back to that to that thought, like, hmm, is this the Easter egg? But yeah, he's still the man.

Um I see a little bit of martyrdom in him.

Yeah, I see changes in him little by little, like facial they're very they're very they're very subtle, little nuances. His demeanor, his like he he feels I feel like he I feel like he feels he has the weight of these people on his shoulders.

And it started to show like in his body language.

I think they're pretty much so far, you know, on point. Haven't had any aha moments or have I said, oh, I was wrong. That's yet. But this is still this is still the infancy.

So they haven't changed their character, they haven't changed their um their their goals yet. The writers are still uh developing their characters.

This makes sense because according to the producer's podcast, the monster sound was taken from a taxi receipt printer in a New York in a New York City taxi.

You're like, I just I just find it kind of fitting that that was the name of the report. That he's so gum ho old I need to get done. Not 1230, not 1215, but noon. Yeah, so we're recording that loosely.
