So this week we're going to play around with the format a little bit, and I'm gonna read just a little synopsis, and then we're just gonna break it down after that. Tabula Rossa is the third episode of season one. Tensions begin to rise among the signal party as they return from the mountains. At the beach, Jack becomes increasingly suspicious of Kate, the fugitive being escorted back to America by the marshal. Flashbacks center on Kate's time in Australia prior to the crash when she lived with a farmer named Ray Mullen. So this was the first episode in the lost format where the flashbacks focused on one person. Did you enjoy this more than the last couple of episodes where the flashbacks focused on just one event?

I don't think I enjoyed it any more or any less, but it makes sense in the greater scheme of things.

You have a pilot episode where they have to get a feel for people. If not for everyone, but at least a basic gist of what's going on. That makes sense. Breaking down each episode to focus on a particular character, that makes sense. I think I can I think I can live with that. I approve Lost.

When it opens, the Marshall is talking to Jack about Kate. And when Jack questions him, he says to look in his pocket and he finds Kate's mugshot. So now as the audience, we know what are you laughing at?

Because at this moment when he's saying, Don't trust her, she just wants to get away. And I'm thinking, where the hell she's gonna go? Like, like he has an idea, like I'm pretty sure he's I bet we've crashed. He knows that much. I'm just kinda in it out, but I'm laughing because I'm like, where is she gonna go? Like, okay, but yeah. Right.

At one point he tells him she'll do anything to get away, and then by the end of the episode, we see that that's not even true.

When we flash over to the search party, Saeed is giving us a geography lesson, but we learned from his geography lesson lesson that they were flying from Sydney to Los Angeles. Because I don't think that we knew that up to this point.

Yeah, I think they did. When um the pilot was trying to explain what happened in episode one. Yeah, he did say they were going to Los Angeles.

That's why, okay, you know what? He didn't say Los Angeles, he did say California, but he didn't mention Fiji. So that's the only way they have that the because they passed Fiji or whatever, they have to go to California.

And I I swear Shannon just likes to argue with Boone. I don't I don't remember what she was arguing with him about, but that's my note. So they must have been bickering about something.

I think he's a little hard on her. I think I think like I say, I think that the I don't think he really brother, sister, whatever, I don't think he actually gets her, and he's a little hard on her. And I think it's yeah, that's just my personal opinion. Saying from the big sister that's hard on the younger brother. But um I know this from facts.

Back on the beach, Hurley finds Kate's mugshot, also. So now Jack, Hurley, and the audience know about Kate, and in the signal party, she's the one who gets elected to hold the gun because that she's the one that they trust the most.

So it's like a total like dum dum-thum moment.

Well, I think that has a that has a lot to say. I'm not sure if I mentioned the last episode or not, but her story isn't as black as white as it seems. I'm like, so it's like she's not even before her this her flashback on this episode, I'm like, she's something else is going on here. I see her doing something bad for a good reason, or actually found herself in a position that she it's more to it than what Lisa wants, you know, just done.

But as far as the episode goes, all what we know is that the marshal is like, she's dangerous, and now they're handing her a gun. So still funny. Oh, I think I remember what they were arguing because so uh Boone takes the gun off of them because he wants to stay and watch. And Shannon's like, he doesn't even like guns, he goes on marches.

So we got our first flashback here. So she's in Melbourne with Ray. She agrees to help him work the farm because he offers her a fair wage and a place to stay. Back on the beach on the island, they get back and Saeed takes charge. Um he really proved himself to be very concise as a leader. I mean, he was like, Well, we need some, we need three groups, we need one for water, we need I don't remember what the other groups were, but I was like, okay. Why are they all electing Jack when Said is a natural leader? But they agree not to tell the rest of them about the French women's transmission because they don't want them to lose hope. Do you agree with that?

I think so, absolutely. You have a bunch of people at I listen, as a leader, sometimes you have to give information as needed. I think you want at this point in time, you want control. You want people to be cool, calm, collected, as much as they can be deserted on this no this island mid of nowhere.

I so like you don't want to you don't want to brew up mass hysteria. You don't this is the time you need people to be somewhat focused to get things done.

Because right now, part of this, like there's episodes, there's parts of the show that I'm like, okay, people, get it together. We have like you got we gotta get food, you gotta get shelter. Like this temporary shit is not gonna last long. Get it together. And it's like it's like killing me. My type A personality is like on edge right now.

You better learn how to like make some bricks and mortar because you're about to be building houses.

Right. Let's get comfortable people. You, you for the hospital. Like, who's put in the coffee shop? Like, this is what we need to be working on, you know.

So Kate finds Jack when they get back and says that she needs to tell him something. And I know that it was made out to be like, oh, this is the moment where she's gonna be like, so I'm a fugitive.

But no, of course, that's not what she tells him. She just tells him the truth is about the transmission. And then she asks about the marshal, and Jack lies to her and is like, nope, he didn't say anything. Like, that's not a suspicious question at all, Kate. Like, why would you ask if he said anything? But she lies to him, he lies to her.

So one big fearful lie.

Hurley is worried because he's happy. So Jack, Jack goes in the fuselage to try to find medicine, and Sawyer's in there trick-or-treating, and he's like, boo.

I'm just so concerned about um my god, my brain is shutting down. The pregnant woman, Claire.

Like, I'm like, oh my god, childbirth, deserted island. Oh my god, I need modern medicine. Like, I'm just I'm just concerned about her. Okay.

I can't wait. I don't my anxiety. So, um, yeah, let's get back to Kate because um Kate's an interesting person. Interesting but predictable.

The character's a little predictable because it's you like, yeah, she's on a the the Marshall has her to take her back. And you're like, but this is TV and it has to be a twist, and we get it. But I'm okay with her. I don't hate her. I would like to see her be I like to see her start getting more interesting. I hope it gets interesting. It kind of left this episode left me, it was kind of anticlimatic for me.

Well, it was okay. It was a very brief introduction of her.

Very brief. And I was kind of looking forward to something, like I was looking for a cliffhanger until like the next time they do her flashback. I was looking for something like a little meatier. Like I don't need to know details, but I want something a little bit more just to grab me. It didn't grab me. I'm like, all right.

Yeah. So about how it left me anticlim it was anticlimatic for me. I mean something meatier.

Um, yeah, yeah. I I think that this episode for me, this episode was good in the sense that, like I said, it's the first one that feels like lost. But in terms of the meat of the episode, there are definitely better ones.

And there's obviously a love there. I mean, there's some disaffection there. There is some. And I'm trying to pinpoint it. I remember last time, I last episode I said there's something cultural about the way they interact with each other, interact with people. So I'm like, okay, I want to hold off on any. And if I'm pronouncing this wrong, please forgive me. I mean no disrespect. But I think she's a K Sing.

Well in okay. In that scene, she brings him the bag and he tells her that she's a mess. Yes. Like, nah, thank you, not let me help you, you're a mess. And she accepts his criticism and is about to go and find him his bag. But then he's like, But I love you. And it's is that supposed to just make it better? Or it's very almost like uncomfortable to watch. You know? Cause you're just kind of like, man, do you feel bad for her? Um like she's she's she's on an island with all these people, but in a sense, she's so isolated. She's she has there's a language barrier. He's not very comforting to her, at least not that we can see. And I I feel like it would be very lonely, very isolated for her.

I think, okay, so to touch I think what makes sense, it kind of puts things in perspective, is um the casing is um, like I said, it's like a it's a Korean geisha. And these women were normally from a lower class and they were trained to entertain men.

Well, you know, with music and conversation and poetry, and they were and they when they were they worked in the royal courts and all the other good stuff. So I think on that level, that dynamic between the two makes sense in my head, in my mind. Um, am I right? Am I close? Am I wrong?

Like, not for nothing though, but I mean, if that was if that was one of us and we lugged the suitcase and we've been like, no, that's the wrong one, and you look like a mess, I would have been like, um, go fuck yourself. Goodbye.

First of all, we both have been digging looking for our luggage. That's one. I mean, it's not gonna be that the whole meat lugging and you sitting there would never have been happening unless you're like incapable. But um, but yeah, that would never have happened. But that was my gut reaction, and then I'm like, wait, hold up. Open eyes, be you know, I try to be open, open-minded and not judgmental and see all the signs and everything, but yeah. I guess she's like fine, be laugh be the adult about it.

Kate finds Jack and basically wants him to put the Marshal out of his misery. And Jack makes a comment like that he's not a murderer. Do you think he said that because he assumes that Kate is? Like the way he said it.

Well okay, so he saw the sheet.

No one really knows what the sheet says. Because I'm sure there's writing on, I'm sure. It just is a big picture. Yeah, but I'm sure because usually tell you most wanted sheets says what they wanted for. So they just like want it. Like they tell you like felony, burglary. Like they'll tell you what the reason. So I'm sure so he saw the wanted sheet, he knows what it is. I mean, if it was like TV based on real life, hello. Um, I don't remember I don't remember seeing words. I think I I just assume because that's how all the wanted sheets look like in every TV show I've seen. Um so I'm assuming he knows, and we as the audience are privy to that information. So, like, because he told he saw the sheet. He told he like he knows. Are we at the point where he told her that she saw yeah, he told you know, he knows. She knows he knows by this point.

So I just think I think it's a secret for us until the current's open.

I think as the next flashback, Ray convinces her. Well, in one of the flashbacks, anyway, Ray convinces her to stay the night, not to leave in the middle of the night, and that he'll drive her to the train station in the morning. She agrees, and then as they're driving, she realizes that he turned her in. And um the marshal makes like a like a finger fun, like uh motion at her, and she grabs the wheel of the car and just kind of runs them off the road. After the car the car the car flips over and like goes on fire in like a second, like I can't let a fire that quick if I try. Okay, I have like a propane warmer outside my house, and it doesn't even go on that fast, and it's propane, and all you have to do is hit a button, but whatever. Like the car goes up quickly, and she pulls him out and she pulls him to safety. I mean, she rips his arm off in the process, but she pulls him to safety, and just when she gets out of him and her out of harm's way, boom, the marshal got her. She's caught. But that's just one example that I want to bring up. What were you gonna say?

Oh, I think I might have been I think I want to bring up both at least another example of proofs that there's more than needs to eye to Kate. She saved the guy that turns her in. Actually, three points I'm going to Kate. She helped the marshal in the airplane. Yeah. Remember with the whole flashback, she put his oxygen mask on her on him. And then the third one, I don't know if you're gonna bring it up. Should I bring it up? But she wants to make sure the dude got his reward. Of course, it's it's loot now.

He hears the noise and he starts to run away, and then he finds the Korean woman half nude.

He was so disturbed by that. I kind of felt sorry for him.

And she just looked at him like, dude, like I'm I'm sorry, I didn't see anything. I'm I'm just and he just keeps going, and he's like handing her the shirt, and he just puts his head down, walks away, but he's muttering the whole time. Like, I don't, I don't know.

I think I just kind of shook my head and kept it moving. I was like, all right, dude. Because she I didn't notice how nonchalant she was about it. I mean, she wasn't, she was shocked, of course. You know, someone just runs up on you bathing, but she was more like, Why are you tripping? Like, it's just I think she was more disturbed, if you call disturbed. She was she was more thought by thinking by his reaction.

She was probably just happy that he looked at her and didn't think she was a mess like her husband.

Right, right. He's in a band. We get to see Shannon wish that the marshal would just die already. Shannon's very considerate. She wishes the marshal would just die already.

You know how that sounds, but yes, yeah.

Take it out of context. But I think she really I think of some level she can I think someone may take it as um cold, but she's being she's kind of pragmatic about it. She's like, you can be pragmatic and care and em and empathize at the same time.

But she's also not all those things because he wasn't bothering her until he started moaning loudly and then it was disturbing. So now it's bothering her. So now she wishes he would just die already.

Well, if you think about it, because all these people are hearing him moan and a and I'm pretty sure they're all thinking the same thing.

Hearing someone dying brings your own mortality right in front of your face. Like you just survived this crane crash, you don't know where you are, you don't know if you're gonna be saved, and you have this man moaning like on the precipice of death.

You're like that brings your own mortality into focus. You're like, well, damn, like I don't want to hear it, I don't want to see it. Like you're just shut him up already.

I can I can understand that. Yeah. We're getting towards the end of the episode. Jack and Hurley are talking, and Hurley realizes that Kate is in the tent with the marshal.

And told Jack about the gun that she had, so he flipped out.

Because Jack is like, well, what's she gonna do? She's like a hundred pounds soaking wet, and he's like, dude, she has a gun. So now he's nervous, but Kate walks out, and then you hear the gunshot. Sawyer shot him. But Sawyer misses. He thought he was helping.

But yeah, he does a lot of half-ass shit. He doesn't do anything completely. I mean, he shot the polar bear. Thank you. The polar bear in the tropical island. He shot the polar bear, so yes. But you know, the the girly girl, I use that quote unquote, got the gun from him. He used a one bullet to shoot a dying man in his chest. Well, you have like you have your sternum who's put that's protecting the the freaking heart, and you're gonna use your one bullet on an organ that's protected by bone, and most people don't know where the heart is. Let's be honest. So you usually most people would have missed anyway. But yeah, that's just my personal opinion. I just assumed when they when I heard the shot, I'm like, oh, headshot.

Well, when he comes out and they're like, Well, what'd you do? And he's he he's still his cocky self, and he's like, What you couldn't. But then they realize that he missed, and it's like he has that oh shit moment where it's like, oh fuck, what did I do? Like how you know I thought I was helping. And Jack goes in and suffocates him. And so I guess Jack is a murderer after all.

But is it really murder? But I think the when he had it was so he had his oh shit moment, that was probably one of the most human moments he had, because we've all have done our best to do good and screwed up worldly. Yeah. And we're like, and it hurts, and it can't and it messes with your head, and you're just all screwed up. You can't eat, you can't it's a mess. So we've all had that moment in our lives. So I think that's the most human moment with Sawyer to date.

So and and at this point, we still know what his story is, but I still hope to my belief that that's my dude right there. I I totally was gonna like him, and I do like him, and I don't want to think he has ulterior motives. I just think he's I still even seeing the next episode, I still think he has he's good at the core.

Um yeah, I I'm I'm excited when we start getting into his story. So Jack, Jack and Caden are talking, and Jack says something to her that's very profound, for lack of a better word. And he just tells her straight out, it doesn't matter who we were before. I mean, now we're getting right back into the name of the episode. And he's like he says three days ago we all die we all died, and basically we get to start over. So I think that's I think that's really important in not just in this case, but in life, you know? Maybe maybe it's never too late to start over, you know, whatever. And and then the next scene I feel like is such a refreshing representation of that quote. But what were you gonna say?

The music is kind of upbeat, it's happy, it's soothing, and you have the Korean couple, and he's he's brushing the hair away from her. Boone finds Shannon's sunglasses that she's been looking for, and he gives it to her.

And Sayed throws Sawyer, the apple, the fruit, the apple, and then and that can sound so corny, but you have like the apples like I just think him doing that was like you said, a completely clean slate, like they've been at each other's throats from the beginning. So it's like a new slate, wash away that just started this off from scratch, let's get this together, people.

At this time, um, I was like, okay, the next episode's about him. That's why I was just like, okay, this has to be about him. Like the next episode, like it kind of it was kind of like some foreshadowing happening there. I was like, okay, that was my only thought. And just like I said, this episode still kind of left me like, okay, I'm not shutting you off. You're I'm not you're not grabbing me yet. So um that's my thoughts on this whole episode. But um I like the personalities of everybody in general. Like I'm really into why are people doing the things they're doing? What were the writers thinking? Like I gotta so it doesn't make a difference because it's a TV show. It's not real. But I still do that because you know, I'm TV watcher.

But it makes it more relatable. It's I feel like you get personally, I get so much more invested in a TV show when I feel like I can relate to these people. I always feel like I'm much more of a TV person than a movie person. A movie I have to invest a big chunk of my time to get to know these characters, and then they're gone forever after that. But a TV show, little by little, every week, you get to know them and it and it's comforting. And I get to know them and I know their backstories, and I have a rapport with them, even if they have no idea that I exist and they're totally fake. But we know each other for years.

Um, I like her. I'm not anti-Kate. I'm I'm truly interested in finding out more about her. She intrigues me. Um, that's pretty much it. Like, let's I'm I want more Kate. I'm excited to find out more about her.

I saw Saeed as one. Um, I don't know if I said this last episode. I never told you this, but he looks like someone from my past. So um it's kind of unnerving. But for rapists, like he looks just like him. But um But no, Said and I are cool.
