I feel like only if you get paid up front. Flashbacks. Richard, Tenerife, Canary Islands, 1867. Ricardo rides his horse to the remote house where his wife Isabella is laying in bed with a high fever and is coughing blood. He's like, I need a doctor, but he's kind of poor. So his wife gives him the necklace, the gold cross, and she wants him to give it to the doctor as payment. Richard is hesitant, but she says, Close your eyes. And she whispers, they'll always be together, and she kisses him on the cheek. He promises he'll save her and he leaves. He rides through the night, through the storm to get to the doctor's house. He gets there, he's soaked, he's tired, he's scared, he's everything that a man who loves his husband would be. And he's like, please, doctor, save.

And he's like, Okay, but give me the money. But Richard doesn't have enough money, so the doctor's like, well, fuck your wife. And then Richard gets mad, and they're fighting over the medicine, and by accident, the doctor falls, he hits his head, and he's dead. He takes the medicine and goes home because you know, the guy's already dead, so take your own fucking medicine. But he's caught, he's the wife is dead, he's caught, he's thrown in jail. He's like, I need absolution because you know I'm a good Catholic. And the priest is like, yeah, I don't care, it was an accident, but like, no, you don't get any.

This episode was full of people who do not follow their oaths. They're the doctor, the priest, no one, and I think it's quite it clicks in with the entire episode when Jacob explains the purpose of the island. I'm like, oh, they're not no, there is still good in people, and they're not, you know, they're gonna do the right thing. And meanwhile, back at the farm, Richard got here because people did not do the right thing. So I like how that they tie that all in. See, I was paying attention.

But because he is teaching himself to read, because him and his wife were planning to go to the new world and start a new life, start a family, he's quote, saved. But you know the statue. The statue where Jacob lives. But the ship is carried up on a big giant wave, it's crashed right through the statue, and now we know how one the statue is down to just a four-toed foot, and how the ship is in the middle of the jungle on the island now. Richard and his captives wake up. It's like, where are we? Okay. But the crewman comes down and he's like, the captain is dead, only five officers are alive, and also I'm gonna kill you guys because you know, supplies are scarce, and you know, you'll you'll kill me too. So boom, boom, boom. And did you did you have captions on when you watched?

The black smoke comes through, grabs the guy, pulls him through, and then the black smoke comes down, it's all around Richard's face, and then it leaves. Then we get scenes now. Richard is alone, he's still chained, he's trying to get a nail loose, he's trying to pull the um the chain off of the wall. He passes out, he's trying to get the water that's dripping in, but this is brutal. And and we don't know how many days, but we can tell that it's been days. But then one of these days, uh Isabella comes and she wakes him up and she says that she looked the devil in the eye and only saw evil. She wants to know if Richard saw too. He says he thinks he did, and she says that she's gonna free him before the devil returns, but she can't. But then we hear the monster, and he's like, You need to go. And she runs, and then the monster comes back, and it's like, don't you know? Haven't you oh wait, it's 1867, they don't have TV. I was like, Don't you know every time you see one person and then the other person leaves the room and then the other person comes in, they're the same person, but they don't have TV yet. I forgot. Don't they have stories with that? Alright, whatever. Okay, all right, Agnes. She screams, there's more noise, and now Richard is like that shit because he's like, My wife is Abella. But sometime later, the man comes to Richard and he gives him water and he's like, Hey, who are you? He's like, I'm a friend. That's your first.

Richard is like, yeah, uh, I'm in hell. And the guy who is the man in black says, Yeah, you are. He says that he's been there a long time. Richard wants to know about Isabella, and he explains that he has her, implying that she was captured by the devil. Richard begs to be freed so he can save her. And the man in black says, he will help, but he also wants to be free. He says, Oh, look, I found these keys. He'll probably unlock you. But before I do, I know you've been chained here for maybe a week and you've had nothing to eat, and only this pitiful sip of water that I got, and you're desperate to save your wife. But I really want you to do something for me first. Okay. And that doesn't sound evil to you? Yeah, seriously.

Rock, hard place, Richard. So he unlocks the chains and he says, it's good to see you out of those chains. Which is a call back to I forgot what episode it was, but when Locke sees the case.

He carries Richard out of the Black Rock and explains that the only way to escape from hell is to kill the devil. As they're eating a boar, the man in black directs him to the statue and tells him that that's where he's gonna find the devil. He gives him an ornate dagger, and we've seen that before. That's the one that Dogen gave to Saeed.

Yes. And he says that you have one chance and you must not hesitate or let him speak because if he speaks, it'll already be too late. Richard is like, but how could I kill the devil if he smoke? But the man in black is like, actually, it's me. It's me. I'm the black smoke. Ha ha. Uh sorry, I didn't tell you that before, but yeah, no, it's me. He's the devil. Get him. He claims that the devil betrayed him and stole his body and his humanity. I feel like this is something I heard in real life right now, but um he explains that Isabella was not running from the black smoke, but from the devil. He says he saw her take Isabella but couldn't stop him, and he deflects questions about murdering the ship's officers and ref and requesting Richard commit murder, saying that if Richard wants to see his wife again, he must hurry up. Richard goes towards the statue, but before he can get there, Jacob attacks him. He asks whether Richard he asks whether Richard met the man in black, and Richard explains that the man in black said the only way he could see his wife again was if he killed Jacob. Jacob says the person he saw was not his wife, that he is not dead, and also you're not in hell. Richard is unconvinced, so Jacob is like, all right, let me help you. And he drags him into the sea and tries to drown him. After submitting him submitting him. After submerging him four times, he says, Do you think you're still dead? Why should I stop? And then Richard says, Because I want to live. Maybe that's what we should do with people who don't believe in truth. Until they're like, Yeah, yeah, yeah, I believe in climate change. I believe in science. Yeah. On the beach, the two sit together. Jacob says he's not the devil, and he explains that he brought the black rock to the island. Rachel wants to know why. And Jacob uses a bottle of wine as a metaphor. The wine is evil malevolence. The bottle is containing it because otherwise it would spread. He explains that the cork represents the island holding the darkness where it belongs. Jacob says the man in black believes everyone can be corrupted because it is in their nature to be bad, and that he, Jacob, brings people here to prove the man in black wrong. When questions on whether or not Jacob has brought people to the island in the past and what happened to them, Jacob says, Yeah, I have, and now they're all dead. But, you know, I want people to know the difference between right and wrong without being told. This would never pass an ethics test for psychological experiments. But I guess, you know, in the 1800s it was all cool.

Richard says that if Jacob won't help these people, then the man in black will step in. Jacob thinks on that a moment and then offers Richard the job of being his representative. And he's like, Well, if I can't intervene, you can. You can do it on my behalf. Richard says in return, he wants his wife back. Jacob's like, nope, no, no, no, nope, nope, can't do that. He's like, All right, cool. Absolve me of all my sins. Can't do that either. He's like, but I don't want to go to hell. And Jacob is like, uh, you know, just try again. So he says, okay, well, I don't want to die because I'll go to hell, so how about I just live forever? Jacob's like, bingo, I could do that. You got it.

Richard returns to the man in black who realizes that Richard did not kill Jake. Jacob and correctly guesses that he let Jacob talk to him. Richard is like, by the way, Richard, uh, Jacob asked me to give you this, and it's a white rock.

The man in black tells Richard that his offer of joining him will stand. He gives Richard the pendant and disappears. He's like, Yeah, I found this here. Richard buries the wife's pendant and cross at the base of a stone bench and a small little sapling and says goodbye to his love. Now we're gonna talk about the man in black. After his meeting with Richard, the man in black is seated on a log overlooking a valley of trees. While tossing the white stone, Jacob joins him. Jacob asks about the gift of the stone. He's like, Hey, you got my gift? And the man in black says, Don't gloat. Jacob asks whether the man in black sent Richard to kill him. And he says, I did because I want to leave this island. And please let me go. And Jacob says, Well, as long as I'm alive, that's not gonna happen. The man in black says, That's why I'm gonna kill you. Jacob is like, Alright, well, somebody else will replace me. And the man in black says, that's okay, I'll just kill them too. Jacob doesn't argue. It's like, well, here's here's a bottle of wine. Pass the time. Get drunk, what else is there to do? We're here forever. Jacob leaves. Yeah, I mean, right. Shit, if I could make wine. Jacob leaves, saying he'll see him around, and the man in black says to himself, sooner than you think, and then he smashes a bottle. In another flashback, we see Ilana in the hospital. Now we've seen her with her face bandaged and Jacob visiting her. They speak in Russian. Jacob, uh, Ilana is very happy to see Jacob and he's asking for help. Jacob explains that there are six people that she is to protect, and that their names will be on his list. He explains that this is what she has been preparing for her whole life, and that the six are the remaining candidates. Sometime later, Ilana is speaking with Jacob. She's no longer bandaged, and she asks what she should do after she has brought them to the temple. Jacob says to ask Ricardo, who will know what to do next. So those pieces are now fit into the puzzle. Now on the island, present day at the beach camp, which is how the show opened, because the whole thing is Richard Richard's backstory, but it starts here. Jack, Curly, son, Frank, Miles, Ben, and Ilana are gathered around a campfire. It's like it would be nice if it wasn't so fucked up. But it's like all you need is like a guitar and some marshmallows.

And maybe some of that Jacob wine, but Richard stands nearby. Ilana and son explain that son, Jack, Hurley, son, Jack, and Hurley are candidates to replace Jacob. Frank says, all right, well, what are we supposed to do now? And Ilana says she doesn't know, but that Richard should know. Richard starts laughing like ridiculously and says he has no idea. He says he was trying to kill himself. And when Ilana brings up Jacob's instructions, Richard says that everything Jacob has ever said is a lie. Jack asks for an explanation, because of course he does. And Richard says he will reveal a secret that he has known a long time. He says all of them are literally dead, and that everything around them is not what it appears. They're not on an island. They are in hell. Richard says it's time, it's time to stop listening to Jacob and time to start listening to someone else. And he takes a flaming torch and heads into the jungle. He's like, Yeah, I'm out of here. Screw you guys, I'm going home. Planning to go after him, Alana loads her rifle but is interrupted by Jack, who says Richard has lost his mind and that if he cared about what Jacob said, he wouldn't be talking about listening to someone else. Jack says, Jack asks who Richard means. And son means son. Son explains he means Locke. Now, Jack doesn't know.

Jack is like, uh, Locke is dead. Thank you, Captain Obvious. And Ben is like, well, if it helps, it's not exactly Locke. I swear, Ben, Ben gets the some of the best lines, like the best.

No, he does an amazing job with the character. Hurley is off to the side speaking Spanish to an invisible someone. And you hear Hurley say, Okay, what can you do? Yes, I can help you. I don't know how to find him. I don't know where he went. Jack is like, You're speaking to Jacob. What are you saying? And Hurley is like, um, it's not Jacob and it's got nothing to do with you. And he leaves.

Basically. He says, Nunya. Ben says to Ilana that going after Richard is useless because he doesn't know anything. She isn't sure. And Ben replies that he's known Richard since he was 12. Frank is like, oh, how cute. You guys known each other since you were a kid. Ben is like, well, I was a kid. Not Richard. He looked just like this. You know, those 40-year-old, 12-year-olds.

Uh-huh. Frank asks if that means that Richard doesn't age, and Ben confirms. Frank says, and how the hell do you think that happened? And then basically, this is how we get into Richard's uh backstory. Now we're in the jungle. Richard has been trekking all night, and now it's the next day. He returns to the spot in the grassy clearing where he buried Isabella's cross at the base of a stone seat. He digs it up. He's distraught, and he asks whether the man in black is listening to him and that he's changed his mind. He was wrong. And he calls out, asking whether the offer still stands. But not the man in black, he gets Hurley. Hurley walks out of the jungle and asks Richard what offer he is speaking of. Richard is amazed that Hurley is there and angrily pushes him away, reminding Hurley that he doesn't know anything. Hurley asks him to calm down, and as Richard starts to yell, Hurley snaps that it's Richard's wife, Isabella, who set who has sent him. So apparently saying calm down doesn't work on men either. Richard reacts in disbelief. What?

Hurley says she wants to know why Richard bury the cross. He tells Richard that she's standing right next to him. Isabella says to Hurley that Richard doesn't believe him, and Hurley explains that sometimes it takes a while. Richard slowly turns toward where Hurley is speaking. Although Richard can't see Isabella, he now addresses her. Doesn't he know how tall his wife was? He's like looking straight over her head. Pugio, Pugio. The man in black's dagger is a Roman Pugio. On the sheath, there is a depiction of a Roman of the Roman she wolf suckling Remus and Romulans, twin founders of the Eternal City. The brothers fought and Remus was killed by his brother. You see the theme here?
