Hi, and welcome to this week's episode of Sassin Sips. On today's episode, we're gonna be talking about Egg Town from season four of Lost. I'm one of your hosts, I'm Lisa, and I'm Agnes. And as you can probably hear, I am channeling my inner sick Phoebe. And it will be quite a miracle if we get through this episode without me trying to sing Smelly Cat.
SPEAKER_01I'm trying to get her to do that. Like that should be like the outgoing outgoing with you singing Smelly Cat.
SPEAKER_03Maybe we'll we'll see if this the medicine kicks in.
SPEAKER_01I'll be prompting her and get getting her going behind the scenes. What are you drinking today? Agnes has okay. So I'm getting over a cold, but to maintain my healthy status.
SPEAKER_03I think I caught your cold.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, my my virus went viral.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I am overdosing, just joking, on vitamin C and T, but it's what's in the tea that knocks out all colds. A little I like drinking my regular beverages with the little hoo hoo inside. I know, especially when it's hot, it hits the system faster.
SPEAKER_03It really does.
SPEAKER_01Hasaki hits your attic. It's because it's warm.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Hatsaki is good.
SPEAKER_00I like sake.
SPEAKER_03I think I think this might be a first for me. I think this might be the first time that I am here to record without something hoo-hoo in my cup.
SPEAKER_01Oh, because God, this is gonna be such a boring episode.
SPEAKER_03I know, I'm sorry, but I I did take like medication, so it should be interesting then. Oh, it could get weird. But because I took the medication and I have to drive my child to work later, I I had to be somewhat functional. So we'll see.
SPEAKER_01We'll see what happens. I mean, she's like what 16 and a half, so I can just throw the key to just throw her the keys so you can drive herself and you could just like manage. Sit in the parking lot till she gets off.
SPEAKER_03Oh bad. Yeah, it if it gets bad, I'll just order her a lift, but um anyway. Eggtown. Can I just ask you when you saw the title for this episode? Did did you have any thoughts of what it could mean? Nope.
SPEAKER_01Nope. Nope.
SPEAKER_03Is it a random name?
SPEAKER_01Because it if it wasn't random, like the economist gave me more of a pause than Eggtown. You know what I mean? I mean something so normal.
SPEAKER_03I know. Well, that that The Economist is kind of intriguing. Eggtown is it makes you curious, but like in a what the fuck kind of way.
SPEAKER_01I didn't. I was like, okay, this is where we're at. I'm I've got it, I've become new, I've become numb. Oh no. I've become numb towards a lot of the insanities.
SPEAKER_03Loss has finally corrupted your brain.
SPEAKER_01What's what was left of it? So we didn't have far to go.
SPEAKER_03All right, let's get started with On the Island. At the barracks, Locke wakes up in a house in the barracks. He goes to the kitchen, fries a couple of eggs, slices a melon, chooses a novel, and takes it all downstairs to Ben, who he has locked up in the basement, which is also the same room that Anthony Cooper was being kept in. Locke makes a comment that those are the last two eggs in Ben's house. So it's kind of like, oh, within the first few minutes, they're like, oh, they're eggs. But then after that, it's like, huh? Nothing. This is I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I like today's title is always kind of like you named a whole title of an episode for 30 seconds of their appearance, and it's like it doesn't really actually it, I think it does have more connotations.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01And as we go further into the episode, we go further into the rabbit hole.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yes. Ben belittles John for being so desperate and unable to figure out what he should do next. He cites Locke's recent failure to find Jacob's cabin as evidence and tells Locke that he is now more lost than he ever was, especially that he's asking for Ben's help. Locke tells Ben he knows what he's trying to do, and he leaves, taking the breakfast with him. And then he throws the plate of food at the wall. And once again, you see Ben with that smug ass look on his face. Because I feel like this is all deja vu from when they were in the hatch. And Ben was locked up and locked through the plate of food.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I forgot about that. There's a little things that I do not remember, and I probably won't, because it was like 600 years ago.
SPEAKER_03I know, and there's a lot to remember, so meanwhile, Kate is sitting on the porch drinking coffee with Claire when Sawyer comes over to them. Claire leaves to make Sawyer some coffee, and Sawyer offers Kate a room in his house. Kate tells him she's not moving in with him though, and at the mention of her possible pregnancy, she tells him to go home. Kate then goes to Locke's house and asks to speak to Miles. Locke declines and warns Kate that while she may think this is a democracy because of the way Jack ran things, it's not. Kate seems surprised by Locke's attitude and calls it a dictatorship, to which Locke tells her that if it were a dictatorship, he would have shot her and then gone on with his day. Very violent, right?
SPEAKER_01Very, very much so.
SPEAKER_03I mean, he has like his Locke way of saying it, like very matter-of-fact, but it was a very violent statement.
SPEAKER_01He's losing his marbles in the sense he's losing his control, like he doesn't know where he's going. And it's funny how he has his faith, but the faith of what? I don't even think he knows.
SPEAKER_03But he's I think that we've seen enough of Locke over the last however many seasons, where when he starts to feel the loss of control, he starts spiraling.
SPEAKER_01Right. But don't we all you know, you know, everyone it looks different, but I think everyone spirals.
SPEAKER_03Then he tells Kate what time dinner will be ready and ends the conversation. Just like, you know, I would have shot you, but also dinner is at six.
SPEAKER_01So but he did say if he was a dictator, he really didn't threaten him per se. Yeah, I don't know. I'm trying to.
SPEAKER_03Kate approaches Hurley and Scooby-doos him into telling her that Miles was moved from the rec room to the boathouse. She promises not to let Miles go, but heads over to talk to him. Inside the boathouse, she finds him bound to a chair and she demands to know if Miles knows who she is. Miles won't answer until she does a favor for him. Kate replies that she's not going to let him free, but Miles says that he's exactly where he wants to be, and that the favor he wants is to have one minute with Ben. Claire and Kate hang up the laundry. When Aaron starts to cry, Claire asks Kate if she can get him for her. Kate, who's a little embarrassed, says she's not very good with babies and she doesn't want to upset Aaron. Claire giggles and picks up Aaron. Kate tells her that she's so good with him, and Claire laughs and says motherhood is the last thing she ever thought she would be good at, and that Kate should try it sometime. It's not fucking chocolate cake. You don't just try motherhood. You're stuck.
SPEAKER_01Maybe she was called, like, you know, I guess since of I was a babysitting, but like, hey, pick up the kid, pick up someone's kid. No, try it. I'll come try to give her, I was trying to give her grace. But yeah, that was my same thought. Like, hey, just try being a parent. Too many people already try, like, no, this doesn't work for me. I'm done. Thanks.
SPEAKER_03I know. I mean, I understand, right? Like, yeah, we understand what she's saying, but like, you don't just try out motherhood. It's it's not a new dish, it's not a new restaurant, it's a lifelong fucking commitment. Is it? I didn't know that. That's sarcasm, people. And do you know what else? They want you to feed them multiple times a day every day. We're supposed to feed them, yeah. Every day. Wait, uh uh. Yeah. Oh, I know.
SPEAKER_01I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and you have to buy them clothes too.
SPEAKER_01I did the clothes part. I did do the clothes part. Yeah, that was a definite because it gave me a break. Just so you know, we're being sarcastic, people because next thing you know, people be calling, we'll be canceled, I know, and all that yeah.
SPEAKER_03Kate then appears at Sawyer and Hurley's house, where Sawyer is reading Adolfo Bioi Cesare's novel, The Invention of Moral. I'm sorry if I'm not saying that right. Sawyer and Kate talk in the kitchen over Dharma boxed wine. That shit was a box of free wine. I would have drank it too.
SPEAKER_01Listen, wine is wine, is wine.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. And my palate is so unrefined that honestly, you could give me the best wine in the whole world and a box and a glass of boxed wine, and I'd probably be like, wow, these are both really good.
SPEAKER_01I I apparently there are some wine enthusiasts and experts rather, that are pretty certain that you're paying for the name. Like there are damn good, inexpensive wines, and most of the the so-called experts don't know the fucking difference.
SPEAKER_03I would believe that.
SPEAKER_01And then there's listen, what everyone's taste is different, like something might taste good to me, and I taste good to you. And it's like, okay, man, it's very subjective. Of course, I mean, you know, if it tastes like vinegar, everyone's goes like, okay, something's wrong with this shit.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but yeah, I I know enough to know that my palette is not um sophisticated, so I like what I like, and that's why I really don't spend more than 20 bucks on a bottle. Because I don't think I spend that much, but I'm saying it's usually less, right? Five, usually closer to like seven, ten, eleven dollars. Right, but you know, when I want to feel fancy, right? Because the label speaks to me. But like if it's more than 20 bucks, I'm like, oh no, that's too expensive.
SPEAKER_01I I would buy like a huge bottle at my local grocery store because grocery stores in the midwest have liquor stores in them practically, and it was like 18, 19. No, I think like 26.99, but it was like a huge bottle, almost magnum size wine bottle. Do wines come magnum size or just champagne? Anyway, it was a big bottle. I'm like, oh okay. If I had $26, it would have been mine, right? Um, but yeah, other than that, yeah, no. $14.99, I think the most I've ever been. And if you go to Aldi's, uh, get some for like five dollars. Amazing. Thank you, Aldi's.
SPEAKER_03Sawyer notes that Kate has been spending a lot of time with Claire and Aaron. He also notes that she is not here to spend time with him, and if she wants to use him, she should just ask. Kate asks Sawyer if he'll help her break out Ben. So Sawyer goes to Loc's house and asks him and asks him if he's interested in a game of backgammon. But then he informs Locke, after first having Locke give him his word he won't hurt Kate, that she wants to break out Ben so he so he can talk to Miles. Together they go to the boathouse but find it empty. Miles and Kate are meanwhile breaking into the basement of the house, and Miles can talk so Miles can talk to Ben. Miles asks Ben if he knows who he is and does he know who Miles works for? Ben replies yes to both. Miles tells Ben that he wants three point two million dollars and he will tell his boss that Ben is dead and that he can take care of Charlotte, the only other one who knows Ben is alive. Ben wonders why the amount is so precise. When Ben be when Ben feigns his inability to get the money, Miles yells at him not to treat Miles like he's one of the losties since he knows who Ben is and how powerful he is. Miles first gives Ben two days to come up with the money in cash, but as Ben is a prisoner, he gives him one week. So generous, Miles. Right? Kate then pins Miles against the wall and demands he tells her what he knows about her. He admits he knows all about her, claiming the freighter crew have detailed information about everyone on the Flight 815 manifest. He then goes on by saying her full name, why she was on the plane, and he lists the various crimes that she's committed. They attempt to leave, but Locke and Sawyer appear at the top of the stairway. Loc reclaims Miles and demands that Kate return to her house. Later at the house, later at Kate's house, Kate's listening to music as Claire arrives. Then Loc shows up wanting to talk to Kate alone. After finding out from her what Ben and Miles said to each other, Locke banishes Kate and tells her to leave by morning. Kate then goes to Sawyer, who says that if she wants to stay, he'll unbanish her and he'll protect her from Locke. And then they get intimate.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I'm sorry, but like the way Sawyer just is kind of like like I got you, it's so fucking hot.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. Like it is. I uh and that is why I am still single.
SPEAKER_03I thought you were gonna say like Team Sawyer or something.
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, well, because no one does that anymore. No one like I got you, like no one does that, right?
SPEAKER_03And it's so not like condescending when he does it, right? Right, like maybe I'm like Jack. Exactly what I was gonna say. It's complete opposite. Miles is in the boathouse with his wrists suspended from the rafters. Locke arrives, could could have been a more fun situation, right? Locke arrives and says he's responsible for the well-being of the island. Instead of bringing him breakfast, Locke shoves a grenade in his mouth and pulls the pin. So Miles's mouth is holding down the trigger mechanism. Locke tells him that if he doesn't talk or lift his teeth from the trigger, he'll be fine. And then Locke calmly states that this is the punishment for breaking the rules. He then leaves Miles alone with the grenade in his mouth. He's like, You'll be fine so long as you don't talk. But like, if it were me, I'd be like, I'm gonna sneeze any second.
SPEAKER_01So that'll be the moment where you have an itch, you have a cramp, literally at that moment. And for some reason, the scene was very lockish.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. It was just so dark and twisty, but also calm and like almost humorful.
SPEAKER_01Is that what we're doing? Right, and expected. You're like, okay, this is nothing, nothing's in here, people. Everything's perfectly normal.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_03Except the grenade in the dude's mouth, but nope, everything's cool. Kate wakes up in Sawyer's bed and wakes him up with kisses. He tells her that he understands that she didn't want to go all the way last night because she was sad, and she turns down his advances again. He respects her wishes, but becomes exasperated and grumbles that she still thinks she might be pregnant. Okay, first of all, I feel like it's kind of fucked up though. Because you wake up, you're like on top of him, you wake him up by kissing him. Like that's fucked up, especially when you're gonna turn him down. Right. I kind of felt the same person like that. Like you don't amp them up only to shoot them down, and make it feel like this is their fault, right?
SPEAKER_01And it's not like it was like, oh my god, I think I changed my like I'll change my mind. It was she made it seem like it was his fault. Not that she changed, like so and she she knew she was gonna say no, right? So if you if you know you're gonna say no, and then you don't blame him from saying no, it's yeah, yeah, he deserves better than Kate. Like at this rate, Kate and Kate, the way she keeps flip-flopping is driving me nuts.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah, and he's about to call her ass out on it, and she and and and how Kate states that she's certain she's not pregnant. And when Sawyer seems a little too relieved at the news, now she's pissed off and begins to leave. Sawyer tells her that she'll come running back once she's mad at Jack again. At that, she slaps him across the face, gets up, and leaves. But where's the lie?
SPEAKER_01None at all.
SPEAKER_03Thank you. At the beach, Jin and Son are trying to decide where to live once they leave the island. Jin is studying a map and in English mentions Albuquerque and New York. She's like Albuquerque, and she's like too hot. He's like New York, she's like too many people.
SPEAKER_01I missed them so much. I didn't realize how much I missed them until I saw them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And have watching the scene, I remembered a question you asked me about the oceanic six. And then I had another another view on it. I'm like, duh, Agnes, what did you just think of the most obvious reason? But we can, I don't know if you want my opinion now or wait till afterwards. I'm gonna forget. So the Oceanic Six is quite possible. The name Americans gave the survivors that stayed in America, or went to America, or settled in America, or just the American ones, as opposed to all the survivors that they picked up. And how many are okay, how many survivors are there? I feel like this we see so many people back and forth.
SPEAKER_03You mean on the island right now?
SPEAKER_01Survivors from the oceanic, right?
SPEAKER_03How many survived? But you're but you're talking about like island survivors, not the people that we see in the flash forwards. No, island survivors. So this so you have Jack, Jen, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Locke, Locke, Jen, okay, Claire.
SPEAKER_01Jen is son, Claire.
SPEAKER_03Said okay, Rose and Bernard.
SPEAKER_01Were they on the plane?
SPEAKER_03Rose and Bernard, yeah, they were on the plane.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_03Remember Rose was sitting next to Jack, and the husband was in the bathroom, so he was on the tail section.
SPEAKER_01Gotcha, and that's how they got dispute um separated at first. Okay.
SPEAKER_03I think Oh, Hurley. Oh, Hurley, yeah, Hurley and Vincent.
SPEAKER_01So that's 11, and we're not gonna count Michael and Walt.
SPEAKER_03Well, they left.
SPEAKER_01They left, but there was 13, so 11. So I'm just so yeah, it's I'm thinking quite possibly the sick just refers to what the Americans call their survivors. And I say theirs because the people who actually, you know, the Americans on the plane that still there.
SPEAKER_03But can I throw a wrench in your absolute Lutley? Said wasn't American, and he said he was part of the oceanic six.
SPEAKER_01I I said or settled.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_01I said either like that not necessarily the only Americans, maybe the ones that settled in America. Gotcha. Okay. That's now I feel like you're taking this too calmly, then I'm probably completely wrong.
SPEAKER_03I mean, you can never no comment.
SPEAKER_01No, you don't ever give a comment. But yes.
SPEAKER_03I know that's part of the fun.
SPEAKER_01And you're so good at it. And I'm looking at you, and you think I have I can I would know your tell by now. But I think part of me is like not looking for the tell because I don't want to know if I'm right or wrong.
SPEAKER_03We can record like this, and I'll just put everything in front of my face, and I I probably saw. Muffled is all health.
SPEAKER_01I we'll just say put her arms up and read our eyes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but my eyebrows are even expressive.
SPEAKER_03Sun says that she wants to raise her baby at home in Seoul, Korea. Jen reminds Sun that the child is our baby.
SPEAKER_04Or is this?
SPEAKER_03But before Sun can respond, Jack, Daniel, Charlotte, and Juliet return. Jack tells them Saeed and Desmond have left on the helicopter so that they can make arrangements to get us all off this island. When Sun asks Jack where Kate is, he tells her that she stayed with Locke. Daniel is checking out some Dharma boxes as Jack tries to contact the freighter. Juliette asks Jack if he should try another number on the satellite phone, like 911, because no one is answering the phone, the phone number given by the freighter people. Sun then asks Jack about Saeed and if he's made it to the freighter yet. Jack says that he can't get in contact with the people on the freighter, and Sun starts to wonder if Loc was right and the freighter people are here to hurt them. What were you doing?
SPEAKER_01Oh, there was a smudge on my camera. And I was just like rubbing it off.
SPEAKER_03So I can't see your expressions.
SPEAKER_01Yes. I'm gonna put a piece of paper on the camera now.
SPEAKER_03Jack quickly replies that Locke has no idea what he's doing, and Sun retorts, then why is Kate with him? That night, Daniel and Charlotte are conducting a memory experiment with the Dharma playing cards. After being timed by Charlotte, Daniel can only remember two of three cards, and contrary to what Charlotte says, he feels like he's making no progress. Jack appears, demanding to know why the line isn't working, and no one answers the phone. Charlotte reveals that she has an emergency number, but it can only be used in extreme cases. Juliette tells her threateningly that it is an emergency, and Charlotte then dials the emergency line. She says to Regina that the people want to talk to their friends, Said and Desmond, who left with Frank on the helicopter the night before to make sure that they're alright. Regina states that she doesn't know what Charlotte is talking about, and that she was under the impression that the helicopter was still on the island. So I feel like this is where you should be like dun dun dun.
SPEAKER_01Um kind of expected it. But for the purpose of my normal thing, dun dun dun.
SPEAKER_03Now the flash forwards, we go to November 2006. Kate and her lawyer arrive at a courthouse. Kate is hesitant about entering and asks if there's a back entrance. Her lawyer tells her that she will go in the front door with her head held high. She then puts on sunglasses and they enter through a throng of reporters and protesters, with Kate's lawyer refusing to give any comments. Inside, court is called to session, and the bailiff reads a list of Kate's charges. I mean, how much time do you have? It's like fraud, arson, assault, theft, murder. I mean, what's not in there?
SPEAKER_01I mean, um light stuff.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you know, easy. Kitty antsy stuff. Kate pleads not guilty, which seems to shock the court's audience. The judge asks to hear arguments on bail, and the district attorney requests that Kate be remanded in custody. Kate's Kate's lawyer argues that she's not a flight risk because she is one of the most recognizable people in America. And the DA is like, um, she is the very definition of a flight risk.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I see both sides. Like, where's she gonna go? Right. Where is she gonna go? Like what that where's she gonna hide? Is what like I know.
SPEAKER_03But the judge agrees with the DA and orders Kate to be taken into custody. Later, Kate's lawyer meets with her inside the prison parlor, and the lawyer the lawyer wants to make the case about who she is rather than what she's done. He suggests that they bring Kate's son to the court to create sympathy toward her, but Kate refuses to involve him in her trial under any circumstances. Were you confused as fuck at this point?
SPEAKER_01Um no.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01What's confusion? I mean, I was, but I was I'm like it was a surprise, yes. Confusion, no, because we already kind of know, like, there was some like she's had sex recently. So you know, so I'm like, oh, okay, and then I had another aha epiphany moment, of course. As soon as she said that, I'm like, ah, uh. Um, when she had told Jack um I have to go, he'll he'll be looking for me, or he'll wonder where I'm at, or whatever. I I'm like, oh, she was talking about her son, not Jack, or I mean, not Sawyer or whatever guy she's with. She was talking about her kid.
SPEAKER_03I'm like, ah, but you having context clues and shit.
SPEAKER_01I know. You would have thought I had a brain and actually used it once in a blue moon. I only I only use it for the purpose of this podcast.
SPEAKER_03Okay, I'll take it.
SPEAKER_01Okay, good. No one else would know what to do with it if I actually used it like in the real world.
SPEAKER_03After being damaged in the prosecution's opening statement, Kate's lawyer apologizes to Kate for what he's about to do. And what he's about to do is call a clean-shaven Dr. Jack Shepard to the stand. Kate's surprised, and after being sworn in, Jack states that he knows Kate because he was also on Oceanic Flight 815, which crashed on an island in the South Pacific. Kate's lawyer asks him if he knew of Kate's fugitive status and how. Jack replies that he never spoke with the marshal as he died during the plane crash, but that it was Kate who later told him of her status. Jack then adds that due to her character, he believed it to be a mistake. He also states that there were only eight survivors of the crash, all of which Kate helped to get to shore and in safety and treated them with first aid. According to Jack, Kate was the one who helped the survivors be but before he can continue his testimony, Kate interrupts in protest. The DA then cross-examines him with a single question. Do you love the defendant? Jack hesitates and then answers, nope, not anymore. I feel like this is like what all is wrong with that statement? Because how do you make sense of what Jack said? With the eight eight of us survived? It crashed in the water. There was only eight survivors. The marshal died in the crash. I never spoke to him, and Kate saved everybody.
SPEAKER_01I mean, okay, obviously, we know there's a lot of things that didn't actually go right with that. On this flip side, it's kind of what you expect from a character with this testimony.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01You kind of take the truth, kind of like fudges a little bit. Because was everything a complete lie? The Marsha, I mean, yes, he took Marsha ended up dying from injuries from the cat from the crash. So technically, he died. You know, did he speak to him? Yeah, there's your lie. So it's kind of like I mean.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I feel like though, in reality, isn't the real story with the Marshall more telling to her character than the fake story that she literally tried to still save his life?
SPEAKER_01Um, I think that'll leave it too much. Okay, so I I get it, right? Because then it's ambiguous, like, oh, but it'd leave too much for the prosecution to question, and you don't right.
SPEAKER_03But like the real story is that, yeah, no, she she actually still tried to save his life.
SPEAKER_01And then he asked, and but then it goes with, but you didn't talk to him? Like he have to he has to be like, oh no, he died. He didn't get try to get saved because you try to tell me that he never told you who she was, and like it just leaves. I think this is a a typical character witness testimony. Yeah, that's that's but eight survivors?
SPEAKER_03Eight survivors.
SPEAKER_01That that I'm confusion.
SPEAKER_03You you you are just confusion? Okay. I am just confusion.
SPEAKER_01I am confusion. I'm not confused, I am confusion right now. Not to be confused with Confucius. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Later, Kate's mother approaches her in a witness room. She asks why Kate didn't come to see her. And Kate says that the last time she contacted her, her mother shouted and then called the cops. Her mother tells Kate that the doctor told her she had six months to live for the past four years. She says she doesn't want to testify against Kate, and Kate tells her, Well then don't. Her mother implies that she won't testify if she could see the child, and Kate refuses, saying she doesn't want her anywhere near her child. Back in court, the DA has a problem and speaks with her fellow attorneys. At the bench, she informs a judge that Kate's mother cannot testify at present due to a health problem. The judge calls recess, and during the recess, the DA offers Kate a deal of four years in prison. Kate's lawyer objects, claiming that the jury would never choose jail time for her due to the heroic story and the fact that she was killing her father to save her mother from abuse. The DA offers a deal of time served plus ten years of in state probation. Kate agrees over her lawyer's objection, telling the DA to give her something to sign because she just wants the whole thing behind her. She adds that she isn't going anywhere because she has a son. Kate leaves the court from a back door and sees a taxi waiting for her. Jack calls out to her. She asks how he knew she'd be there, and Jack states that her lawyer owed him one. He tells her that he didn't mean what he said in court. Kate tells him that she's heard him tell the story he told on the stand so many times that she thinks he's actually starting to believe it. Kate invites Jack back to her house to visit her and her son, but he refuses, saying he has to get back to the hospital, but he offers to meet her for coffee instead. Kate tells him she understands why he doesn't want to see the baby, but that until he does, there won't be any talks over coffee. She then adds that if he ever changes his mind, he can visit whenever he likes. Kate arrives home and is greeted warmly by a nanny. The nanny remarks that Kate's baby missed her badly, but he's now asleep upstairs. Kate enters his room to see her boy, who's a toddler with very blonde hair. The child wakes up, hugs Kate, and says, Hi mommy, and she replies, Hi Aaron. And that's where the episode ends.
SPEAKER_01I kind of like this. She said Erin had a we had a rewind a couple times. I'm like, Eric? Who's Eric? I'm like, does that mean something? Does Eric mean something? It's Aaron. Aaron. Okay, so now I am confusion times two.
SPEAKER_03Also, the whole time we're referring to this kid, I mean, not the whole time, but like every time she refers, it's either son or baby. The kid is three years old.
SPEAKER_01Right. That's that's not like a baby. I mean, I would say baby if I'm talking in a form of endearment.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01But if I'm referring to the kid, I'm like, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I guess that they would think they were really talking to Jack.
SPEAKER_01The baby, right? You that's not a baby. I mean, unless the writers are really trying to keep us like what the fucking. Well, yeah. And because we're like, because obviously we before we even see the kid, I know we're all trying to like do some like math in our head, trying to figure out approximate age, right?
SPEAKER_03And it kind of is like taking you down the path to think, like, oh, you know, especially like the the way she's talking with Jack, like, I understand if you don't want to see the baby, blah blah blah. So you kind of makes you think, like, oh, is this Jack's kid?
SPEAKER_01Because I was like, oh, the fact he doesn't want to see the baby doesn't mean it's his or not his, because whether it's his or not, like you gotta like, if you can't be you can't be around the baby, I don't want to be around you either. So I'm like, okay, that's not a question of paternity, but the kids too, or Sawyer's kid, right?
SPEAKER_03So that would understand that would be understandable also if it was Sawyer's kid.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, oh, and then but she said Aaron, okay.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_01Is this another rabbit hole you're gonna maybe go down? Because I was now my hair spinning all over the place because, like I said, I couldn't understand what she was saying. I'm like, huh? Eric? Does Eric mean something? Is that is that a character that I don't remember? Okay, Aaron. Aaron. So Claire didn't so Claire did not stay. I mean, Claire stayed, Claire died. What the hell happened? And and if Jack doesn't want to see Aaron, is there um oh oh I wonder and that first episode, not the first episode, the last episode, and he was going to the funeral, and they never said whose funeral it was. Was it Claire's funeral? And if it was Claire's funeral, why is he all fucked up over it? Did she die trying to leave the island? The world may never know. And how many licks does it take to get to her sit to a titro pop? The look you're giving me.
SPEAKER_03We will find out.
SPEAKER_01You you will find out if you are right. I I'm not and I'm throwing these out there not to be right. I don't at this point, I'm not gonna remember if I was right or not. So this is why she writes things down. Because I don't know if I I don't know what I say from minute to minute, never mind from like an entire season, or in this case, two, three seasons ago.
SPEAKER_03Good point. Good point. But I think I think that once we kind of get there, you'll remember.
SPEAKER_01I feel like you said that before and I don't, but okay.
unknownOkay, all right.
SPEAKER_03So some notes, a little trivia. Sean Dole, who I'm pretty sure he played The Lawyer, previously worked with Elizabeth Mitchell. Uh, she plays Juliet in the film Frequency. The film involved time travel where Doyle's character, a serial killer named Jack Shepherd, is prevented from killing Mitchell's character.
SPEAKER_00That's funny.
SPEAKER_03Even when they can't write the shit, they still find a way to like pull someone in.
SPEAKER_01Like, this would be a great cat. Once again, I think there's a question for no, maybe not. This is too, this is said too many points, but it makes you wonder coincidence or intentional. Um, I mean, it just solidifies my whole thing there is this time travel space-time continuum thing going on and lost.
SPEAKER_03This is day 94. It's Christmas Eve 2004. It's 94, day 94 on the island. On the island. So over three months. So there goes the whole rescued on day 93.
SPEAKER_01Uh refresh my memory. I feel like I should remember this.
SPEAKER_03Um, it was the reference to like the one of the other books that they kind of referenced, and then it was like the but they got rescued on day 93.
SPEAKER_01Oh.
SPEAKER_03And so for us, it was still day 91 or 92. So we were like, oh, you see, they're gonna get rescued on day 93.
SPEAKER_01Okay, gotcha. All right. I remember it vaguely. See, and that's what, two episodes ago?
SPEAKER_03Which, in fairness, Saeed flew off the island on day 93.
SPEAKER_01So Saeed was maybe, maybe not rescued on 93. Who knows where Said is? He knows I think he did get off the island, but he's in that another plane. He's in another plane where he works with Ben.
SPEAKER_03That's another thing, but we know, like, in this episode, they're like, oh, the helicopter never made it, it's not here. But we know from the last episode that Said is alive in the fl in the flash forwards.
SPEAKER_01I told you, an time, space, continuum, a different, a different universal plane. I just have a question. When the series ends, does everything get wrapped up or do it leave you fucked to the head?
SPEAKER_03I think there's still things that they don't address address. I mean, not that I think I know that there's still things that they don't address, but I think they do the best job of wrapping it up that they could have done.
SPEAKER_01Considering the 101 billion pieces and breadcrumbs that they have left over the seas. All right. I I I'm okay with that.
SPEAKER_03It's yeah, I can't really tell you without telling you.
SPEAKER_01Are the big things answered? Not even. Oh, great. That's it.
SPEAKER_03I don't know how to answer that.
SPEAKER_01Oh, great. I give up, I'm done. I quit again.
SPEAKER_03I don't know what you mean by like big things.
SPEAKER_01I mean, uh like explanations on I I all the questions we've been asking ourselves thus far.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and that's why I can't answer.
SPEAKER_01Oh, never mind. I'm just gonna skip ahead. I'm gonna enter my own space-time continuum.
SPEAKER_03It's like they they do, but they don't, they do.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I'm not gonna like throw remote control of my TV though, right?
SPEAKER_03I don't think so.
SPEAKER_01Okay, cool beats.
SPEAKER_03I will tell you this: this is one of those shows where the end has a lot of controversy.
SPEAKER_01As long as it's a fade to black, like the Sopranos.
SPEAKER_03No, this episode is one of three episodes that begin with a shot of the eye of a character who is not the centric character for the episode.
SPEAKER_01But isn't he always the centric character no matter what? I mean, even when he's not in the I feel like only in your world, I feel like his presence just makes it is omnipotent.
SPEAKER_03Well, I think, yeah, I mean, but I think when they're referring to centric characters, the one who's getting like the flash forwards, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Be technical.
SPEAKER_03This is the first episode that Jin has any dialogue this season.
SPEAKER_01I know because I've missed them so much. Like, I forget that they were there. Actually, I need more of the other people. I'm getting tired of the same people. Yeah, I need more. I mean, I don't necessarily need flashes from everybody, but I need to see more. I need more of a basis for them. Like, what do they do? How's it going? How's it hanging? How's life been treating you? I need that from the other characters. Get together lost, share the lost.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the title of this episode baffled many fans. Carlton Keughes explained, Really, we could spend a lot of time talking about the titles that don't make sense. But the title Egg Town referred to the fact that Locke fixed a couple of eggs for Ben at the beginning of the episode. And then there's also the episode had a lot to do with Kate's pregnancy, and pregnancy involves eggs, and so that's what I was gonna say. And so that was the other kind of sort of metaphoric significance of the title Egg Town.
SPEAKER_01Translation, translation, we were drunk as fuck when we did that title, and it is what it is.
SPEAKER_03Like it, don't like it, it's already the titles in French, and I am not gonna try to I'm not gonna read the other languages. In French, the title translates, the title of the episode translates to enemy mothers.
SPEAKER_01I feel judged, I feel attacked, and I feel I feel I feel seen because I know there's some people out there that consider me an enemy, and I'm a mother. I'm a motherfucker.
SPEAKER_03In Latin America. The title translates to the trial. So some bloopers when Locke throws the plate with the eggs, the wall is supposed to be concrete, but you could see it shake. Oh, because it's a set. They said Kate's handgun would not have defeated the padlock.
SPEAKER_01No. And can I tell you something else that bothers me? She holds her gun incorrectly, and every time I watch it, it makes me cringe.
SPEAKER_03How is she supposed to hold it?
SPEAKER_01So she holds it, you know, dominant hand around the thing, but she holds it with her other her left hand under the butt. You're not supposed to, it's supposed to be you're supposed to like hold your hand.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Like you yeah. And it just irks me. It it makes me cringe. And I said, Lisa would appreciate my uh the fact that I appreciate it sarcastically. That's like the only thing I see.
SPEAKER_03Like, ah so there's a whole shitload of like wrong things with the trial. Kate kills the the the father in all in Iowa.
SPEAKER_01Kate was a stepfather, though.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but remember it was the father? It turned out, but then it turned to the father. Turned out to be her father.
SPEAKER_01But she thought it was her stepfather. I mean, yeah, book ahead. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So that but that all happened in Iowa, and obviously they're the trials in California, right? It's in California.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that bothered me too.
SPEAKER_03And then the whole thing of like the the bank robbery and all that, it would have been federal court, and she would have been charged with felony murder for the deaths during the bank robbery.
SPEAKER_01Robbery.
SPEAKER_03Right. Even though she, you know, she's not the one who directly caused your death.
SPEAKER_01But it's still right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Her mother any crime committed.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_01That's we watch too many legal shows. I think I'm I I think I could possibly be like I could work in a law firm. I mean, a paraleg. I don't think I could be a paralegal. Maybe, maybe a par apparent is so important though. I don't know. I think I can work in a law firm like with no prior anything. And I think I could I could be fine because I all the legal shows I worked in, I could work in a hospital some level. And all the TV shows. I've been when Krista was having Axel. When we first went there, and there was questions about her blood pressure. Should we sit in her home? Should we stay, do we do stuff? Anyway, anywho, I'm monitoring the monitors. You know, it's my kid. And the doctor's saying this and this and this. I said, but here, here, and here, when it goes up, she had contractions. And the nurse with the doctors, like she's like trying not to laugh, right? Because the doctor's trying to force an induction. And me and my daughter, like, yeah, no, that's not happening. I mean, because the blood pressure wasn't that it was high, but it wasn't like, oh my God, you're gonna no. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Right, right, right.
SPEAKER_01Anywho, so the doctor laughed. The nurse goes, she's like, Are you in the medical field? I'm like, no, I'm just a mother. That's not stupid, but still, um, but I'm thinking to myself, I was like, I I watch a lot of TV.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you know, if you write, if you watch the right TV, you could definitely learn something.
SPEAKER_01I think TV, okay, okay, we all say everything in moderation. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Things that people brush off to be not important, you can learn so much from them. Whether you read fiction, watch tons, shitload of TV, play video games. There is so much you can learn from these acts from these things.
SPEAKER_03My daughter learned how to read by watching TV.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. And then hello, uh, Sesame Street. I mean, well, our age group, like our age group.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah. But that's amazing. Sesame Street, they were never into it. They watched anime and read the subtitles.
SPEAKER_01That's genius. Yeah, Axel is learning a little bit of sandwich, a little bit here and there. Never mind what my daughter is teaching him, like all the bad stuff. But Miss Rachel, and she does like some of her stuff and sign, not a lot, but she does a word here and there. And but TV is educational if you know how to apply it. And especially as an adult, you should be able to take knowledge from anywhere. Not Facebook memes, um, but it should at least I mean, even the memes should spark your curiosity enough to do further research. I know it should.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Facebook meme reading Wikipedia mother.
SPEAKER_03Okay, sorry. Also, the fact that her mother didn't want to testify wouldn't have affected the prosecution's ability to convict on the robbery-related charges. Also, under California ethics rules, the lawyer c may not call a witness, as in Jack, against her wishes. Her objection in open court to calling would be prima excuse me, fat fasci? Fatchy? I don't know. Evidence of an ethical violation and would lead to sanctions by the California State Bar Association. Also, character evidence, like his testimony, would generally only be allowed in to mitigate punishment after guilt has already been determined. Usually, the only way it would be brought in before that would be if her character for peacefulness had already been attacked. But seeing as how this trial has been reversed, this cannot have happened.
SPEAKER_01So, you know, maybe. The whole thing irked me, honestly. Like the whole trial thing irked me too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01For the very same, for all the same reasons. I was like, uh, I am a professional TV watcher, and this is unacceptable.
SPEAKER_03Jim proposes moving with son to Albuquerque, which is where Sawyer's daughter is supposedly being raised.
SPEAKER_01I thought that was completely random. Like, no one looks in the math. Oh, Albuquerque. Um, I mean, if I I just like if I'm looking at a country that I'm not familiar with, and I I would probably pick a city or a town that's relatively well known outside of that country.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01Like New York was a right, New York, LA, Seattle. Like there was like there are cities in the yeah. Like I'm gonna go if I pick country, I'm like, oh, let's go to Mallorca, Nice, Rome. It's like these are so typical, and you know, maybe it's they might be a smaller town that might be relatively known, but yeah, if I see on the map, I'm like, oh, I've heard this place, but Albuquerque.
SPEAKER_03And I feel like also if if you're supposed to be just learning English, you put the hardest word, right? Right, it's the hardest word to say Miami would be something you know, pick a that is funny, but that just shows how hard he's really trying for his wife.
SPEAKER_01I know, I know and his unborn child.
SPEAKER_03At her initial hearing pleading innocent, Kate wears white at the trial, discredited and self-loathing, she's in black. So some cultural references when Kate is listening to music, she's listening to She's Got You by Patsy Klein. Patsy Klein was killed in a plane crash. But we've heard Kate listen to Patsy Klein before. The book that Locke gives to Ben is called Vallis by Philip K. Dick. The title is an acronym for vast active living intelligence system in which the author's vision I don't know, I don't know the word, sorry, of one aspect of God. Dick's novels often feature protagonists immersed in dissolving or fluctuating realities. And notably, Dick, throughout his own life, claimed to see ghosts of his twin sister who died five weeks after birth, i.e., the bad twin. Vallis is about the search for a god who turns out to be an organism projected into our minds by an orbiting mechanical intelligence in order to manipulate humans.
SPEAKER_01The Matrix, gotcha. Okay.
SPEAKER_03The Messiah in Vallis is a two-year-old girl named Sophia. Just reading what's written. The invention of Morel. Sawyer is reading this book. The story is about a fugitive who hides on a deserted island somewhere in the South Pacific. Later, he encounters some people that appear and disappear randomly, repeating some actions. These people really don't exist, they are merely very lifelike recordings reproduced by a machine. The people are actually dead. This is similar to one of the fan theories about what's happening in Lost, even though the creators of the show have explicitly denied this possibility.
SPEAKER_01But because some people believe they know more than the actual writers say, No, you're wrong.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_03And I this is probably their way of being like, here you go, have fun with this one.
SPEAKER_01This will fuck with you even more. I finish.
SPEAKER_03When Kate and Claire are doing the laundry, Kate says that she prefers not to take Aaron in her arms, that she would do a terrible job. And Claire jokes that Kate should try motherhood sometime. And then in the future, we see that Kate ends up with that same child that sparked the conversation. And the episode closes with her taking Aaron into her arms.
SPEAKER_01So many questions. In the last episode, oh, go ahead. I did quite, I did like the thought crossed my mind when they were doing the laundry. If I remember correctly, I feel like the clip about not my son, you know, you can't, and then came before the scene of them do a laundry. There was a point where I was wondering, I was like, what if it's Aaron? Um, but then I thought I heard Eric. So I'm like, okay, it wasn't Aaron. I put myself in a rabbit hole.
SPEAKER_03I mean, on my first watch, I didn't see that coming.
SPEAKER_01I part of me at this point with the whole Sawyer Jack thing. I expect like maybe like next week's flash forward would be her and Jack getting married. Like, I feel like they're gonna really fuck with us a lot, but I definitely know they're gonna go back on the island. I think I think they're gonna go back to the island for whatever reason. And I think, and then they're gonna get her and Jack will get married in case they don't make it to the island. At least they I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I'm just fucking, I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I'm throwing that random shit. The economist uh Sawyer claimed if Kate expected to find anything outside the island other than handcuffs, uh she didn't understand how the world worked, and as we see, she's not in handcuffs.
SPEAKER_01To be fair, if it wasn't lost, she would have been in handcuffs, right? I mean, so Sawyer really wasn't wrong, like real world, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Locke is once again playing backgammon, this time against Sawyer, only this time he's playing with the black pieces. I noticed that is this supposed is it supposed to be like evil Locke?
SPEAKER_01I don't want to say evil because very I mean, do we come across evil in this world? Absolutely, we do, but I think this is just a darkness yin and yang, light and dark, dark and light. I think this is just everyone has that darkness in them. Okay, that wolf, like which wolf do you feed? And at the time, this wolf is being fed. I don't say he's evil though.
SPEAKER_03The title of a previous episode, Raised by another, implied that Aaron was to be raised by an other. We find out in this episode that Claire's baby Aaron is raised by another, but it's Kate.
SPEAKER_01I'm going to I okay. So after we have our we record our thoughts, I legitimately have to forget everything we talked about so I can be able to continue with the series. Because I if I go in each episode with all these questions, like, oh, it will drive me nuts because they'll never get answered until like a year later. Um, but I am what happened to Claire? And does Jack know that Claire is his sister by time something like at this point? Because why is he so adamant against seeing the baby if it's Claire? Like it's just Claire, it's for him, it should be just Aaron. Unless something happened unless he was, unless it was he was there when supposedly Claire. I still think Claire's dead at this point. I think that was her in the funeral. I think that was her funeral because she didn't have anyone else but the people on the island, right? Um and you can see they all got their own issues going on. Like at this point, the funeral, Hurley's in he's locked up because it's a forward-forward. Anyway, so anyway, um I'm climbing back on the train because I kind of lost it, but I'm coming back. Um, oh yeah. So, like, why is he so adamant against seeing Aaron? Does he know Clarence's sister by this point? It's just does she die on the oh, did she even die? Or does she die and leaving the island? Is that why they have to go back? Okay, see, rabbit hole, gotta go. Can't do this shit anymore. I hate you for doing this to me, Lisa. I know our next show we talk about would not be this crazy.
SPEAKER_03No, it's gonna be there's not I don't think there are any, or or if there are not nearly many shows that are this crazy, not not like this, um, we're definitely straightforward and comedy, drama, sarcasm.
SPEAKER_01This you don't pay me enough, boss.
SPEAKER_03Sorry, the check is in the mail, don't worry.
SPEAKER_01People out there listening, like check mail, what I don't know.
SPEAKER_03There's there's no money, which if you if you think that there should be money, please send us some. Cause yeah, but anyway, enter shameless plug here. I know. But I think that that's like about it for this episode, unless you have anything. And my brain is like it's it's on a beach somewhere with your brain.
SPEAKER_00So my brain is happy to have company.
SPEAKER_03Good, good, because mine is like non-existent today. I will say this the next episode is called The Constant, and it's like a fan favorite episode.
SPEAKER_01I'll take your word for it. The constant, nothing's constant except for insanity.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna end up next to Hurley at this point, Lisa. I you know, just bring me snacks. Okay. Bacon. I like bacon.
SPEAKER_03Bring you bacon, okay.
SPEAKER_00Bacon's good.

SPEAKER_01You sound just like it.
SPEAKER_03Do I? Maybe I can get a job there.
SPEAKER_02Record in progress.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, you sound just it's kind of eerie. I'm like, did she re-recorded it again? Yeah, that was kind of eerie, Lisa. I'm proud of you.
SPEAKER_03Okay, well, if the podcast fails, I can get a job as a recorded voice on Zoom.
SPEAKER_01Better that. I've been told I can do phone sex. Um, so I've I don't know how I feel about that.
SPEAKER_02More money on phone sex.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, maybe, but it's I still know how I don't know how I take that though. Like what?
SPEAKER_02I think that's a compliment.
SPEAKER_01Is it?
SPEAKER_02I think sex is what everybody wants.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I guess. But to be seen as a sexual object of my days, okay.
SPEAKER_03Oh, the humanity.
unknownGrandma.
SPEAKER_01All day, every day. I can't live like this.
