SPEAKER_00

Hi and welcome to this episode of Assassin's Tips. Where every episode we discuss as I set an episode of Lost in Order. And today's episode is Every Man for Himself from season three. And we do this while we drink. And I don't think anyone has needed a drink so much as I need one right now. I beat of alcohol. And I am sitting in my new house, and I'm staring at a bar full of alcohol and wishing that I could just drink it and pass the fuck out.

SPEAKER_01

But still drink. That's the whole show.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Yeah, but I can't pass out. I have so much stuff to do. So I'm just having just trick enough. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. You know what that paint job would look like, but it's modern art. Oh, say something.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You know, that's a good take on it.

SPEAKER_01

Um, so I have a I can spin anything.

SPEAKER_00

I see. So I got a watermelon hard seltzer today. How about you?

SPEAKER_01

It's funny, but I gotta put it out there. Not all black people like watermelon. Okay, and we're still invited to the cookout. Fuck that. We're still organizing the cookout.

SPEAKER_00

Wait, do you not like watermelon? I don't. Oh my god, watermelon is the shit.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, like, okay. If I have a fruit salad and it's watermelon, I'll eat it.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, so good.

SPEAKER_01

Am I gonna go out and get watermelon or am I gonna get no. It's not my favorite fruit.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god, and I I'd buy the watermelon juice in the store. See, that's I'm not feeling it.

SPEAKER_01

I don't like the watermelon candy. I don't like watermelon juice.

SPEAKER_00

Watermelon Jolly ranches are my favorite.

SPEAKER_01

Sorry.

SPEAKER_00

Oh man. Um oh tell me what you're drinking, and then I gotta tell you a funny alcohol story.

SPEAKER_01

Tommy coffee. Okay. That's my go-to lately, because you know.

SPEAKER_00

My I thought about that and my Patron Cafe is still in the other house. I put it aside because I was gonna grab it in my hand and I forgot it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'll pick it up on the next trip over.

SPEAKER_01

The first thing you do, you go, you put it in the car. And then like, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I yeah. That'll be good, right? As I drive with an open box.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't say leave it there. I just said put in the driver's seat, like you go in, you pick it up, put the driver's seat, and then go back in the house. Did you have to do? This your mind's at.

SPEAKER_00

So you know how this new house has a bar built into the basement, which seems like kissment for us. But so Alex was cleaning up, like I already cleaned up the glass shelves, but he was cleaning up the shelves that were under the bar, like the you know, like where you would sit. And he found the guy who lived here, I swear, he was one hell of a DIY because I think everything in this place he did himself. So, you know, you take you take everything with a grain of salt. So he found like an extra compartment. Because there's compartments everywhere, and then like a lot of them just have like pipes and stuff behind it.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

So we found a half case of coronitas. Now, okay, so how long do you think they're like I don't know, but they're too dark to be good. I'm not tasting that. They look funny.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you know, they have a dark corona too, don't they? Have a dark corona?

SPEAKER_00

If you want to come, I put two in the fridge. I was like, Alex, you can drink this. This is not the year of unknown corona.

SPEAKER_01

You know what? That might reset everything.

SPEAKER_00

So I posted the picture on this Facebook group about things found in the walls. I mean, it technically was found in a in a wall. It's a picture wall, but yeah, the comments were so funny. I can't even think of any funny ones right now, but yeah, I was reading that people added applications. Oh. Oh, maybe. I don't know. But yeah, so there there were like hundreds of comments. I couldn't even read them all, but like the ones that I read were funny. So if any of you guys are on Facebook, go join that group because some some people find like really interesting. I'm waiting to find like something cooler than an undrinkable half case of beer. But anyway.

SPEAKER_01

I'd say this is totally irrelevant, but it's really funny. It's and it's kind of up my alley. So it's a cartoon of a bunch of scientists, you know, they have the lab coats, throwing. You ready for this? Piece of paper with pie on it. Pie throwing. And then throwing out each other's faces. It's so fucking funny.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Alright. That pizza, I want to get this done so I can eat finish eating my pizza. That shit was good. It's a five cheese and marmalade pizza, and it's awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I feel like I haven't spoken to you in so long.

SPEAKER_01

You haven't. Really?

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_01

All right. I'm gonna call you Shelly Long from the money pit, like at this rate, because you're like Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That's what it feels like, too. Every man for himself.

SPEAKER_01

Word. Oh, maybe the title. No, I know. Um, it was okay. Okay. It was a good episode. It was okay. No, no, no wonky surprises, really.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I think I think this might be like one of my least favorite Sawyer episodes.

SPEAKER_01

It it kind of gave me a it it just kind of proved what we've already more proof of what we already said about him. Yeah, he's Eddie Matt himself. Yes, he don't give a fuck. But when the when it comes down to it, he's a good guy. He's not malicious, not evil. He does what's right. He may be he may curse the whole way there, but he'll do what he's right. I like it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's it's just kind of flat. It's not bad, it's just kind of flat. Like, we get um we get like a revelation about something in his life. But aside from that part of it, it's just the whole prison thing is just kind of like okay, he's a con man, we get it. It's the same shit again.

SPEAKER_01

Right, because you already knew what he was gonna do. Like you like you saw it a mile away, so it wasn't nothing new except for that. But I think the reason behind this one was different though. Why? Um, he and the warden don't get along. He's not gonna do shit for the warden. And I think the little piece of information that he was given made him say, fine, I'll do it. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. So you ready to get into the flashbacks proper? Okay. Do it. Do it. Sawyer is in a prison as a result of his long con after Cassidy had him prosecuted. He boxes in a ring with a fellow inmate and he wins the match. As they walk back to their cells, they see a new inmate being attacked. He is told that Munson was recently jailed for stealing 10 million from the government, which the government never got back. Sawyer wins Munson's trust after he predicts the warden will try to take his money, using Munson's wife against him. Sawyer receives an unexpected visitor in Cassidy. He speaks harshly and abruptly to her, even after she throws down a picture of a baby. Clementine, whom Cassidy explains is his daughter. She starts to him that they are now I'm sorry. She tells him they are now living in Albuquerque when Sawyer interrupts, demanding to know what she wanted. Cassidy says that she wanted him to know about Clementine, and that she thought he could write his daughter a letter. Sawyer leaves angrily, saying that he has no daughter. You mentioned that you wanted to know what happened in between going to Australia and after the Long Con, and you you kind of got it. Got it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I get what I want when I want it. Yeah. I don't know. I'm just really silly right now.

SPEAKER_00

Munson, upset from the confrontation with his wife, later confides in Sawyer, telling him that he did steal the money and that he wants Sawyer to move it. Later, Sawyer reveals the location of Munson's dash in a storage facility in Solgrass, Unit 23C, one of the numbers, to the FBI in exchange for commutation of his last six years of his sentence and a cash reward. When asked how he wants his commission delivered, Sawyer tells Treasury agent Friedman to put it in a bank in Albuquerque under the name of Clementine Phillips, stipulating that there must be no way she can ever find out where the money is from. The warden, intrigued, asks who Clementine Phillips is, but Sawyer brushes off the question. Congratulations, Ford, says the warden. You just lied and cheated your way out of prison. You're a free man.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, if you're gonna lie and cheat and still you're getting out of prison is a pretty damn good reason. I'm just saying. Right. And he stole from somebody else who stole. So I mean, you know, I mean. Could have been a lot worse.

SPEAKER_00

On the island. Juliet brings Jack food. Jack says he's fine watching the cartoons on the television. He confronts her about what is going on, pointing out that he should talk to Ben because he's in charge of the others. Juliet insists that there is a common authority and Ben is not the one making the decisions. Wrong. I think we've seen that that's wrong. Right. Jack expresses his doubts about her denial, pointing out that Ben previously seemed happy to let Juliet die, and that Ben clearly made that decision on his own. Juliet insists that Jack does not know what he's talking about, that she does not answer to Ben. In the next moment, Ben arrives and orders her to come quickly because the submarine has returned with Colleen, who was shot in the abdomen by son. Sawyer has to go to work, sorry, but Danny is called away and informed that his wife has been shot. Sawyer recognizes Colleen and points out to Kate that it was most likely our team that shot her, not the others. Sawyer smiles at that, stating that he just found their ticket out of here. He decides to strike back and plans an escape, as Pickett is too preoccupied. His idea to move the water pipe leading to the trough and connect the electricity from the warning button to the water, which is now puddling outside the cell. He tells Kate that he's going to electrocute the other who's standing in the puddle which he has created in order to get the keys to the cages. When Kate asks about how they will help Jack, Sawyer points out that they do not even know where he is or if he is even alive, and that it is every man for himself here. Ben approaches the cage, edging ever closer to the puddle, as he asks Sawyer how old he is. At first he replies 32, but then admits to being 35 and how much he weighs. He replies around 180. When Ben steps into the water, Sawyer grabs him and pokes the button several times with his bare foot, but there is no charge. Ben tells him they turned it off and proceeds to beat Sawyer with the telescopic baton to the point of unconsciousness. When Sawyer regains consciousness, he finds himself restrained upon a table. He can hear Tom discussing with Ben that for the past two days they have been blind and that the communications have been down. Two others, Jason and Matthew, come and stand over him while Tom and Ben watch. Sawyer starts yelling, and then one of the two men tells him to bite down on a stick for the pain. Sawyer starts to panic when he sees a huge needle and syringe. The two lean over Sawyer, and whilst he's screaming through the stick, Jason tells Matthew to just do it how they do it in the movie. During this, Jack can faintly hear Sawyer screams through the supposedly broken intercom in his cell. Sawyer comes to. Tom lays a cage at his chest containing a white bunny with the number eight on his back. As Sawyer begins to question what's going on, Ben begins to furiously shake the cage, frightening the bunny, which panics but then is still. Ben tells Sawyer the bunny had a pacemaker implant in him and that so does Sawyer. He is told if his heart rate reaches 140, his heart will explode. This way he can be assured that Sawyer will start behaving. Ben gives a watch with a pulse time to Sawyer. It will leap if Sawyer's pulse goes over 125 beats per minute. Sawyer then asks him why he did not just kill him. Because we're not killers, James, says Ben. As insurance, Ben declares that the same fate will befall Kate if Sawyer misbehaves. Tells Kate what happened to him, or he tells her that they are being watched. Clearly. Kate asks Sawyer questions, but he does not answer and it's early. When Kate begins to change her clothes after telling Sawyer to turn away, he cannot avoid interest, and his pulse monitor starts beeping. Kate asks him what the beeping is. Sawyer does his best to avoid the question, claiming it's his watch. He douses himself with cold water in an effort to lower his pulse and angrily shrugs her queries off. Kate notices the bars are much wider at the top of the cage and wants to escape. But Sawyer says not to bother. Jack is listening to idle gossip from others coming through the intercom when Juliet rushes in, her clothes battered with blood, to ask him to help save Colleen. On the way to the surgery, the hooded Jack is marched past the hydra bear cages while Klaxons blare loudly to drown out Kate and Sawyer's calls to Jack. Jack appears to turn his head toward their shouts. Ben objects to Jack entering the surgery. When Juliet explains that Jack can help because he's a surgeon, Ben starts to say, Well, this isn't why. But Juliet cuts him off by saying, Do you want her to die? While scrubbing up before entering the surgery, Jack sees some x-rays on the wall, but Juliet tells him that they are not hers. Danny objects to Jack being here, as Colleen is his wife, but Jack has him removed. Danny, Ben, and Tom watch from an observation room as Jack and Julia try to save Colleen, but she suffers a cardiac arrest. And when Jack asks for a defibrillator, Julia tells him it is broken and that this has not happened before. Jack immediately goes into emergency mode, but he cannot save her. In a fury, Danny goes outside to the bear cages and attacks Sawyer, who doesn't fight back. The watch starts beeping. Pickett brutally assaults Sawyer in front of Kate's cell, demanding to know if Kate loves Sawyer, repeatedly punching Sawyer in the face until he is raw and bloody. Kate, sobbing, throws her arms through the cell bars and clutches Sawyer from behind. She finally cries out that she does love him and begs him to stop. Pickett leaves. Back in his cell, Sawyer washes the blood off of his face. Kate manages to escape by squeezing between the bars on top of her cell. She is disturbed that Sawyer will not talk about what they did to him and demands they escape together. Sawyer tells her to go alone, but she will not, and tries to break his lock. When Sawyer says, if you really love me, go, Kate tells him that she only said that to make picket, stop hitting him. As she climbs back into her cage, Sawyer calls out that it's every man for himself and that she has to run. Kate explains to live together and die alone. Inside the hydra in the video room, Ben watches the scene unfold with Tom. Tom tells him that Danny wants to quit kill Sawyer, but Ben responds that Danny can wait. Ben has left Jack handcuffed to the table where Colleen's body lays purposely. When Juliet arrives to take Jack back, she tells him that she is a fertility doctor, so she is not used to death. Jack says she couldn't have done anything and asks Juliet if he's saying that to make her feel better. Oh, I'm sorry. And Juliet asks if he's saying that to make her feel better. She says that he doesn't care about what she feels. Juliet uncuffs him. Jack informs her that the x-rays outside are of a man in his 40s with a large tumor on his spine on the L4 vertebra. He scoffs that he just happens to be a spinal surgeon and asks who he is really there to save. Sawyer jokes that Ben would like of mice and Ben for its puppy killing, referring to Ben killing the rabbit. As they climb further up a ridge, Sawyer's heart monitor goes off. Sawyer asks if Ben brought him up the mountain just to kill him. Ben stops him and tells him that he doesn't have a pacemaker in him and takes a rabbit labeled eight out of a pouch and tells Sawyer that it received a sedative and isn't dead because they aren't killers. Sawyer then punches Ben before anyone can react. Ben responds by telling him that showing him the rabbit was not the point of the walk. As they climb over the hill, Sawyer is stunned to see another island across from the one they are on. Ben announces that the nearby island is Sawyer's island, and so they cannot escape because there is nowhere to go. Ben points out that the only way to get the respect of a con man is to con him. He then also quotes of mice and men and mentions Sawyer only gave in when he threatened Kate. Ben points out that Sawyer tries to distance himself from Kate when he really does need her. Ben tells him to return to his cage, and Sawyer unsettled follows. So he can fits her. Claire says it's fine, as does Charlie, who says he can fix it himself. Desmond reluctantly agrees and walks off as Claire thanks him for the thought. Claire is intrigued by this, but Charlie says that they should find him another button to push. But Desmond replies negatively, saying that it's an experiment, and he turns down the fruit salad Hurley offers. Just as Hurley is about to leave, Desmond suggests he wait a moment. A spontaneous rainstorm falls on them, breaking Claire's roof and splashing water all over Aaron. Claire and Charlie sweep him up and cover him. An instant later, a lightning flash occurs, striking the golf club on the structure and acting like a lightning rod. Charlie looks around in shock and then and then stares confused at the smiling Desmond.

SPEAKER_01

So this is obviously the second time I'm assuming Desmond saw something or like this is the second time second situation where he saw something or experienced something already. And I love the fact that the little his little experiment was to keep the light because we're saying to assume that the lighting wouldn't hit Claire, the baby, in that situation. Right. So great, thank you, Lost. Just throw something else wacky into the mix as if the whole island itself was not wacky enough. Um I really I think um this episode was that it was okay. Nothing too it was I enjoyed it because it was nothing to tear down, there was nothing to dissect. So I think I I enjoyed it more because it was just like minus entertainment.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. I'm gonna read the trivia. Trivia, trivia. Tom told Ben that it has been two days since the sky turned purple and that the comms, communication system, are down. This is the third reference to a purple sky. The first being Claire to Charlie and Live Together Die Alone, and the second being Hurley to Desmond in further instructions. So we get the impression that the hatch imploding has something to do with something bigger.

SPEAKER_01

The magnetic, whatever, because the magnets like the lights in the North Pole with uh magnetic what's going on with the poles and the lights, you get some purples and greens and blues. So I I don't think it's anything other than whatever the uh explosion, whatever happened with the explosion, that what was it? A magnetic leak or something?

SPEAKER_00

Are you really like asking me?

SPEAKER_01

Cause no, it's one of those, it's one of those questions that just you know out there in the universe.

SPEAKER_00

The episode shows Ben using a rabbit as a trick to Khan Sawyer of mice and men is referred to. A character in the novel called Lenny has an obsession with rabbits. And in the Gary Sinise film update in the Gary Sinise Sin oh my god the Gary Sinise adaptation. Mm-hmm. That of the book of Mice and Men, John Terry portrays Slim, and John Terry is the one who portrays Christian Shepard in this show.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's funny.

SPEAKER_00

Um Jack has now heard voices through the intercom three times. You know, the one that's supposed to be broken.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Um we're gonna there's there's another connection from this episode, but you're not gonna see it until later, so I can't tell you. Okay, woman. But it involves I'll give you I'll give you a hint. It involves Cassidy.

unknown

Who?

SPEAKER_00

Cassidy.

unknown

Who's Cassidy?

SPEAKER_00

Um, the girl that Sawyer pulled the con on.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_00

And another character.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Okay. I think it's gonna be Cassidy. Can I guess? You can guess. It's gonna be, let's see, Cassidy and Kate. I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

Um Sawyer showed her how to do the cons, so then she met up with Kate and they went on their own, like con spree.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't know, but I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

You you got it. Yeah, you got it. That's exactly it. That's right.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's so funny.

SPEAKER_00

See we learned that um we learned that Juliet is a fertility doctor.

SPEAKER_01

Which makes her and that whole island and the let's not call the others the originals now, but it makes it it it leads to so many more questions. Like, why would they need a fertility doctor? Like, what the fuck are you doing? And we already knew that they're gonna be able to with kids and pregnant women.

SPEAKER_00

Right, so weird. Yep.

SPEAKER_01

Anything else that you the whole pacemaker thing, I'm thinking pacemaker is not meant to make you explode when your heart reaches a certain level. It actually shocks you a little bit so you just get back into a a normal rhythm.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um but I was like, okay, whatever. I guess the whole purpose of the council on the fact that he wouldn't know.

SPEAKER_00

But well, I don't know. I mean, because I mean, I I obviously I'm not a doctor, but your heart is supposed to if you have a a pacemaker, it's supposed to give you a shock if your heart stops.

SPEAKER_01

Also, if it's irregular or too fast, it brings it back to normal state. Oh. So my mother has. And then the whole and like yeah, the pacemakers today can be hacked. I mean, is it probable? No. But is it possible? Yes. I don't know if pacemakers, what was it? What year was it, 2004, 5 or something like that?

SPEAKER_00

Well, it's supposed to take place in 2004, I believe.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so I don't know if the the pacemakers then were advanced enough to be hacked. That's one. And two, I don't even know if they had the ability. They I mean they have a lot of inf they have a lot of computers and stuff, but I don't know if they have the technology with them to even hack it. So they're really banking on the fact that most people don't know the pacemaker, how it how it works. So that's why he was like, we put a pacemaker in. And once you hit one button, it's gonna you're gonna explode. Yeah, I'm like, oh. They'll go with their games again. But um I'm getting not like I'm sick, but I'm like, I wanna know what the fuck is their end game. Like, what the hell was they these the stupid experiments? And yeah, and does Ben have a tumor in his back or something? Wait, what? You know you know something. I know everything. Like me. I mean specifically into what I I am referring to. Smart ass.

SPEAKER_00

The title is every man for himself. And I mean, I think it's pretty obvious. I think so. You know, in his flashback and in the on island. Although on the on island, like he like on face value, it looks like he's just out for himself, but he's not. I see. He's doing what he he does what he does to protect Kate. The whole thing is but from her perspective, it's him just for himself.

SPEAKER_01

Even then, I don't think she thought that because I think she knew that I think she knows him well enough to know there's something else going on. And but also with Desmond, he's kind of by himself for whatever. He's not part of the he's not part of yeah, he's not part of the group per se. And also, like whatever's going on with him, seeing things or be that's he's alone with that. So I think sub I think like loosely it can apply to him also.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I can see that.

SPEAKER_01

I took uh I'm having spasms the last few days, so I took a pill and I'm like, walk. Now that I'm sitting down, it's kicking in, like the drowsy effect.

SPEAKER_00

So I'm like Yeah, we'll finish up.

SPEAKER_01

I'm sorry, but we'll get like I don't apologize because I I know like yeah. It's Nat Time. What that was that commercial the baby? Nattime's calling my name.

SPEAKER_00

The next episode is called The Cost of Living.

SPEAKER_01

Cost of Living adjustments.

SPEAKER_00

Gotta take the island demographics into account and get the extra mangoes.

SPEAKER_01

Get extra mangoes.

SPEAKER_00

Something like that.

SPEAKER_01

You know I must be tired if I'm laughing this hard over mangoes.

SPEAKER_00

Um it's an Echo episode. I missed him. Yeah, we haven't seen him in a while. So actually we didn't see Locke or Echo, I think, this whole episode.

SPEAKER_01

No. I wonder if they're gonna kill him off.

SPEAKER_00

Who?

SPEAKER_01

Echo. I swear to God, at least I'm telling you right now, if he gets killed off, this is the end. You have to do you have to finish the series on your own. You have to have two personalities. You you and Alice oh no, it doesn't work, Alice is eating. But two very different points and perspectives, so yeah. Figure it out.

SPEAKER_00

Anyway. So yeah, so next episode's an echo episode and and yeah. Anything um before we wrap this up?

SPEAKER_01

I don't think says Allie. I think it's all out. Uh what? I said I think I got it all out, whatever it was. She's like, okay, what?

SPEAKER_00

It was a delayed reaction. I don't know, it's like dumb and dumber over here.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, I think I'm dumbst at the dumberest.

SPEAKER_00

With that word, I I concur.

SPEAKER_01

I wanna see how many smart asses gonna like that's not a word. Like, no shit, Sherlock. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Alrighty. This has been nice, short, and sweet.

SPEAKER_01

Like us. Sometimes. Sometimes. Well like like sour patches. Sometimes it's sweet versus sour, then this sweet.

SPEAKER_00

Uh stay tuned, please.

unknown

Please.

SPEAKER_00

Please. And and thank you for bearing with us while we had a little gap in production. That was my fault. Stay tuned for the next episode, The Cost of Living. And in the meantime, please, please, please, if you can your support for the show, if not financially, then by connecting with us and sharing our show or our links on social media, you can always send us an email or call into our number.
