Hi, and welcome to today's episode of Sassin Sips. Today we are gonna talk about season six, episode twelve. Everybody loves Curly. Hot takes. Oh wait, we didn't introduce ourselves. I'm Lisa. I am yeah, I'm drinking some wine and um yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_01Okay, hi guys, I'm Agnes, and I'm just drinking some ginger lemon tea because I'm getting over the flu. Um, and I didn't have any woo-hoo to put in it. No, but um I should have, but you know, being sick and all. Um, my hot takes. I've missed Libby. I didn't know I missed her until I saw her again. I was like, oh.
SPEAKER_00I like Libby.
SPEAKER_01Um, it's funny, I don't not sure how like how some of the people knowing that there's something off fits into my narrative of purgatory death already, but it doesn't fight against it though. So I'm still like, okay, it was all a dream. They used to read World of the magazine. Okay, stop. Um, let's see. I think that's my only hot take. I mean, it was pretty straightforward, pretty good episode.
SPEAKER_00I I enjoy Hurley episodes overall.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um on the island, Hurley's group, Hurley is at their cemetery. He's at Libby's grave, and he wants to talk to her. So he's he's basically saying that out of all the people who have died and come back to talk to him, he he wishes that she was one of them. And he wants to tell her about you know some of the things that's been happening, and Ilana interrupts because she's ready to go to the Black Rock. They the plan is to get the dynamite to destroy the plane. Ilana says she's not sure if it's the right move, but it's the only move that they have. Hurley then tells Ilana about Libby and how she was murdered before their first date. He hears some whispers and Michael appears. Michael says that he has come to stop Hurley from getting everyone killed. And when Hurley wants to know why he should trust him, Michael says it doesn't matter because if Hurley blows up the plane, a lot of people will die. And people are listening to Hurley now, so it will be his fault. At the beach camp, Alana says that they must make it to Hydra to destroy the plane before nightfall. She tells Richard that she has four sticks of dynamite from the black rock. Hurley overhears and says he doesn't think it's a good idea, especially since the dynamite is so unstable. Ilana says that she must do this to protect them. And Hurley wants to know how blowing up a plane is gonna protect them. Alana says that it's the only way to prevent that quote thing from leaving. She repeats that Jacob said that Richard knows what to do and he sets above the plane. And as she speaks, she drops her pack and the dynamite explodes, killing her and knocking everyone else down. It's like we just don't learn from history, do we?
SPEAKER_01Mm-mm.
SPEAKER_00Hmm. Hurley goes through Alana's tent stuff, and he finds a copy of Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground in Russian and the pouch with Jacob's ashes. He looks inside the pouch, and then he keeps it. Richard tells Hurley that now they gotta get more dynamite or Ilana's death will have been in vain. Jack says the message may be that the dynamite is too dangerous, and he adds that he promised son to get her off the island, to which Richard replies that he wishes Jack hadn't made that promise. Hurley speaks up, saying Richard is right and that it's the only choice they have. He looks Jack in the eye and asks him to trust him, and after a long pause, Jack agrees. As the group heads back to the Black Rock, Ben cynically says that Ilana, handpicked by Jacob to protect the candidates, tells them who they are and then was blown up. He adds that the island was done with her and what and wonders what will happen when it is done with them. They arrive at the Black Rock and realize that Hurley is not with them. Just then, Hurley comes running out of the ship, shouting for them all to run, and then the black rock explodes. Richard wants to know why he did it, and Hurley replies that he's protecting them. Richard storms off saying that they're doomed. Miles asks Hurley why he did it, and Hurley says that Michael told him to, that Michael is one of the dead people who come and yell at him. Miles wants to know whether Hurley just does whatever the dead people say, and Hurley says that the dead people are more reliable than the living. Nope, nope, nope. So Richard now wants to go to the Dharma barracks to get grenades and explosives. Jack thinks that they should talk about it, but Hurley says he knows what they need to do, and it's to go talk to Locke. Ben thinks that he's trying to get them all killed, and Hurley points to a place in front of them, saying, Jacob has told them, told him that they have to go talk to Locke. Richard doesn't believe it. And he's like, Okay, we'll prove it, and asks Jacob what the island is. Hurley says, fuck you, I don't have to prove anything to you. And that he could either come with him or keep trying to blow stuff up. Richard calls him a liar because he says Jacob never tells people what to do, and that if the thing leaves the island, it's over. He asks for help to destroy the plane, but only Ben and Miles join him, and Jack says that if Jacob says to talk to Locke, then they're gonna go then they're gonna go talk to Locke. At night, Sun writes a note to Frank asking whether they made a mistake, and Frank says, probably. Hurley asks what they should say to Locke, and Jack says not to worry because Locke will probably do most of the talking. Hurley looks troubled and admits to Jack that he didn't actually see Jacob, but Jack says, Don't worry, I knew that. But that ever since he got Juliet killed, all he wanted to do was fix it, but he knows he can't fix it. And as hard as it is to let other people lead, he thinks that maybe the point is to let go.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Hurley adds that he has no idea where they're going, but then they hear the whispers. He says he thinks he knows what they are, and he asks the group to wait. He finds Michael and asks if there are others like him. Michael says that they are the ones who can't move on, and reveals that they are the source of the whispers. Michael shows Hurley where Locke's camp is, and Hurley asks if there's anything that he can do. Michael says don't get yourself killed, and that if you ever see Libby again, tell her that he is very sorry. Back with Man in Black, Fake Lock, he is working on a large wooden stick. Sawyer asks if he is fashioning a spear. He says he doesn't know, but when the time is right, it will tell him. He explains to Sawyer and Kate that they are waiting for Hugo's son and Jack to join them because just as they needed to be together returned to the island, they also need to be together to leave. Kate says she doesn't see that happening, and just then Saeed returns from his mission. Sawyer approaches Saeed, but Saeed simply asks to speak with Fake Lock. He tells Fake Lock that Whidmore didn't see him, but that his people did, and that he didn't see the point of killing them when he had what he came for. He then shows him oh, it's Desmond tied to a tree. Fake Lock apologizes to Desmond for tying him up, well, for Said tying him up, and Desmond says he doesn't blame him, but since he has nowhere to run, there's no need. And Fake Lock is like, yeah, okay, I guess that's a good reason, so I'll untie you. Said can tie me up.
SPEAKER_01Oh.
SPEAKER_00The man in black, aka Fake Lock, asks Desmond why Woodmore brought him to the island. Desmond says he was kidnapped, so that question will have to be directed to Whidmore. He says he was thrown into a wood shack and blasted with a huge amount of electromagnetism. The man in black asks how he would know what he was blasted with, and Desmond replies that he knows from experience. Fake Locke says, Do you know who I am? And Desmond says that he Fake Locke is John Locke. The man in black says, sends Said away saying that he was going to take a walk with Desmond, and he offers his hand to Desmond and pulls him up saying there's something he would like to show him. Fake Lock asks Desmond to remind him how long he was in the hatch pushing the button. Desmond said three years. Reflecting that here is Desmond back again, Fake Lock says if he didn't know better, he would say the island has it in for Desmond. Desmond says there's nothing special about him and that the island has it in for all of them. Fake Lock agrees, and then they both notice a mysterious boy standing nearby. Desmond wants to know who it is, but Fake Lock says, ignore him.
SPEAKER_01That's not suspicious at all.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Fake Lock leads Desmond to a well, pointing out it is just one of several on the island. He then drops a torch down the well and shows that it is very deep. He explains that the well is very old, that it was built by hand by people who were looking for answers. They had noticed that compass needles spun at points like this location. He says that digging the well did not give them answers. He says that he has shown Desmond the well because Whidmore is not interested in answers, that he is only interested in power, and that Whidmore has brought Desmond back so he could help Whidmore find what he was looking for. Desmond doubts that this is the only reason that Fake Lock has brought him to the well. So Fake Lock asks Desmond why he isn't afraid, and Desmond says, What's the point of being afraid? And with that, Fake Lock pushes him into the well. Desmond screams, and he just plummets to the bottom. I wonder if baby Jessica's down there. People are like, who the fuck is baby Jessica?
SPEAKER_01They got her though.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I know. Also it was like 40 years ago. The man in black returns to camp and tells Saeed that they don't have to worry about Desmond anymore. Hurley walks into camp and hesitantly approaches Fake Lock and asks for a truce so that no one is killed. Fake Lock gives Hurley his knife and his word. Frank, Son, and Jack then come into the campsite. Son is looking for Jin, and Fake Lock focuses on Jack and greets him alone as Jack stares at him with extreme concern. I mean, yeah, because this guy was dead. Like you saw him in the coffin. So yeah, I mean concern, I think, is putting it lightly.
SPEAKER_01An understatement. Well, I guess all that they've I was all that they've been through, but they really haven't been through much, have they? That's only me. Um interesting. I guess, I guess even their like intuition knows that this really isn't much of anything to be concerned about. Like they've seen worse.
SPEAKER_00In The Flash Sideways, an off-screen master of ceremonies narrates a short retrospective film and a slideshow of Hugo Reyes' life. I mean, I think anyone who has been watching can recognize the voice. And it's describing his success at establishing the Mr. Klux Empire and his philanthropic undertakings. The MC is none other than Pierre Chang. He announces that a new paleontology wing of the Golden State Natural History Museum is being named after Hugo Reyes. Hugo is seated with his mother and he is introduced as Man of the Year. After the ceremony, he walks out with his mother holding his award. It's a T Rex silhouette in frosted glass. His mother, Carmen, says everybody loves Hugo except women and that he needs to meet a girl.
SPEAKER_01She was mean.
SPEAKER_00He says he doesn't have time. She then tells him that she has set up a lunch date with the daughter of his grandfather's neighbor, Rosalina. The next day, he waits for his blind date at a Mexican restaurant, munching on the complimentary homemade tortilla chips. After a brief conversation with the waiter, a blonde woman walks up to him and calls him by name. He jumps up saying he wasn't expecting someone so pretty, but it becomes clear that he has mistaken her for someone else. She admits she is not Rosalita and that she saw him from across the room. He wants to know how she knew his name, and she takes his hand and asks whether he believes that two people can be connected like soulmates. She asks whether he remembers her, and he asks whether he should remember her. Then a doctor approaches, interrupting and takes her away. He follows them out and watches as she is escorted into a van from the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute. Sometime later, he moodily orders a family-sized bucket of chicken at a Mr. Klux. After he eats, he sees Desmond looking at him, and Desmond comes over to him and asks if he knows him, then whether he was on Oceanic 815. Desmond points out that Hugo is eating a lot of chicken, and he explains that he eats when he's depressed. He tells Desmond that he met an awesome woman at the restaurant, but that there's one problem. She's crazy.
SPEAKER_01I mean, but is that really a problem?
SPEAKER_00You know, not really. Desmond says he should follow his gut and try to find out how she thinks they knew each other before he gives up on her. So Hugo goes to the mental institute to see her. Her doctor is reluctant to let him see her because he says that she has issues with reality. And in order to persuade the doctor, he gives him a hundred thousand dollar bribe. It's amazing what money can do. It's like the rules just don't apply when you have a shit ton of cash. So he then shows Hurley where he can see Libby. And she wants to know why he came to see her if he doesn't remember her. When he asks where she thinks she knows him from, she says the explanation will not make sense. She explains that when she saw him on television, a lot of memories came back, came rushing back from her life, except that it was another life. She says there was a plane crash, that she was on an island, and that they were both there and they liked each other. She also believes he was at this clinic. He still doesn't remember, but asks if she's allowed to leave the hospital. When she says that she's there voluntarily, he asks her if she wants to go on a date and she agrees. Later we see them set up a picnic at the beach. She says that being at the beach with him is familiar, like a date they never had. He asks why she would want to be with him, and she says it's because she likes him. They kiss, and Hurley has vivid visions of the time they had on the island. He hesitantly says to Libby that he thinks he's remembering stuff, and he says he doesn't think that she's crazy after all. And then we see Desmond that Desmond has been watching them from a car nearby.
SPEAKER_01And that's when I remember. It took me so long to remember, but I'm like, oh, the manifest.
SPEAKER_00Well, he drives off, and then we see him later sitting in his car outside the school where Benjamin Linus and John Locke work. He's watching Locke crossing the parking lot in his wheelchair. Then appears, knocks on the window, is like, uh, what are you doing? And rightfully so, here's some dude sitting at a school. A guy.
SPEAKER_01Right, a little creepy.
SPEAKER_00A little creepy. Stranger danger. Mm-hmm. Desmond says a story about moving to the neighborhood, uh, school for his son, blah, blah, blah, lie, lie, lie. But Desmond keeps his eye on Locke and says, Okay, you know, I'm going. He starts his car and basically hits the gas, run locks down. Ben rushes to Locke, and Locke appears to be seriously injured but still alive.
SPEAKER_01Barely.
SPEAKER_00I wonder where Loc is gonna end up. I wonder if it's gonna be that hospital. Where what are the odds?
SPEAKER_01No, it couldn't be. In a city with more than one hospital, they all end up in the same hospital. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, I feel like that makes less sense than anything else, but okay. One of the photos shown in the montage of Hurley is actually it's like a baby photo shown in the montage. It's actually him as a baby.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I I was I thought that might have been it.
SPEAKER_00Some thing that I never really thought about before about Miles and Michael. Miles asks Hurley who Michael is. And we know that Miles knew ke knew him as Kevin Johnson.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00But Miles indicated to Michael that he knew his name wasn't Kevin Johnson, but he never made it clear if he knew his actual name. Right. Or if it was just him being smug, you know.
SPEAKER_01Because I guess you can tell, like, right, I can see how he can get the feeling that someone's not his real name, but not necessarily what his real name is. That actually is more logical than be able to get all the details.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. But also then it says Michael was in, I'm sorry. Miles was in the room when Ben revealed that Michael was his freighter spy, and Sawyer explained who Michael was before the freighter. So I guess maybe he's just trying to put the clue. Together. Richard has had been wearing Isabella's cross since putting it on at the end of Abiterno, but in this episode, he's no longer wearing it. Libby appears for the first time since Meet Kevin Johnson. A 34 episode gap. And this is the first time she appears alive since question mark, which is a 68-episode span. Why do you think Desmond had to go in the well? Basically, like the man in black was trying to get rid of him.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so I think he was kind of recreating something. Like Desmond was on the island. So Desmond can't leave the island, but he needs him alive at the same time. I think he's trying to recreate situations. I don't know. Or maybe does it, and maybe there's an exit at the end of the tunnel. He's gonna meet him there.
SPEAKER_00Hugo and Libby finally have their first date. It gives you kind of like the feels.
SPEAKER_01It gives me all the feels and it gives me hope for a happy series finale because I need Hugo to be happy. Damn it. Um yeah, I didn't know. I didn't I didn't know I needed that until I saw it. It was the reunion, I didn't know I needed.
SPEAKER_00So some cultural references. Hurley refers to the fact that he's getting an award from the Human Fund. This is a reference to Seinfeld. The Human Fund is a charity that George Costanza made up in order to get out of giving Christmas presents to his co-workers. When he was discovered, he reverted to telling his boss that he celebrated his father's holiday of festivus. The human fund's tagline was Money for the People. There's a reference to Bruce Springsteen. Hurley is supposed to meet a girl named Rosalita at a restaurant named Spanish Johnny's. Both are references to the Springsteen album The Wild, The Innocent, and The E Street Shuffle. Rosalita being the title of one of the songs, and Spanish Johnny a character referenced in another. The juxtaposition of the On Island timeline, fake lock through Desmond in a Well, and in the flash sideways, Desmond ran over Locke.
SPEAKER_01I wonder sometimes if these things are happening simultaneously in the parallel plane.
SPEAKER_00In the original timeline, Ben murders Locke and in the sideways, when Loc is hurt, Ben is the first one to rush to his aid.
SPEAKER_01I didn't hear anything because all the coughing I was doing, I'm sorry. I'm like, I really think I'm just glad he gets sick after surgery.
unknownThat would have been bad.
SPEAKER_00So Richard claims that Hurley is lying because Jacob doesn't tell people what to do. But we know that he had recently given Ilana and Hurley specific instructions to carry out. So maybe he just doesn't tell Richard. Michael tells Hurley that he should blow up a boat and Michael, which is ironic considering that Michael died when a boat blew up.
SPEAKER_01So I mean, considering Michael's history with you know blowing up, if he's telling you don't do it, I would lean towards listening to him. And I think having him tell him about don't do it, considering you know he killed Libby, I think that ease that makes it even more so of a reason to trust him, if that makes any sense. Does that make sense? I think so. Okay, because if someone evil wants you to do something, right?
SPEAKER_00Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_01There's someone you trust to put the, you know, put the to tell you, oh, this is what we're doing, you know, we're gonna do this, this, and this. You're gonna trust someone you trust, right?
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01Now, someone you don't trust who killed the love of your life is telling you to do something, you're like, okay, this is a reason this motherfucker's coming. It's not it's not an easy, it's not someone who's gonna be easily convinced. So it it holds a uh an ounce of truth to it, if that makes sense.
SPEAKER_00I think I think that it would on face value, it would be easy to be like, no, I'm not listening to you because I've seen what you've done. But but consider but even with considering the source, what do you have to get out of it?
SPEAKER_01You're like you're dead.
SPEAKER_00You know what I mean? Like what's in it for you? Oh shit, my ring cracked. Right. You know, so once you figure out what's in it for you, then you can make a decision because what's in it for him? Nothing. He's dead. He's dead. He's dead, and he's still here because he can't move on. So it's not like, oh, there's something in it. It's not like he gets to live happily ever after or die happily ever after. Nope. He's just trying to do right because there's nothing else to do. That is the end of this episode. Do you have anything else before we wrap up?
SPEAKER_01No. How many episodes until we finish, mom?
SPEAKER_00The next episode is The Last Recruit. And then so it's The Last Recruit, The Candidate, Across the Sea, What They Died For, and then the End. And then there's actually one more after that. But I that the one after that was never like televised, so I've never seen it.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's gonna be fun.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's gonna be fun. Be a new show for all of us to listen to and watch and talk about.
SPEAKER_00Like six more. Yeah. So anything else before we wrap this one up?
SPEAKER_01No, I think that's it. I just have to apologize to our listeners. First, they got me on surgery recuperating. So I was kind of half-assing it then. Once I recovered that, I got the flu. They're like, this bitch need to get it together. Sorry. Give me a couple more weeks, Sally.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's it's been um it's been rough. Uh it's been it's been a it's been a it's been a time. Yeah. I I think that um I need a little like venting, but I think that's what the paid episodes are for.
SPEAKER_01Ooh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I'm not gonna I'm not gonna get into it here. But it's been a shit show. But anyway, I'm going to uh smile. Uh can you hear my joy?
SPEAKER_01Anyway. Yeah, we you're gonna have to get it together, Lisa. I um for your own mental health.
SPEAKER_00I will. I will.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Okay. But until next time, don't drink and drive. And I don't know. Text me if you think I should not throw myself off a building. And until next time, I'm Lisa. I'm not gonna throw myself off a building.
SPEAKER_01I won't let her. She's too afraid of me.
SPEAKER_00You can't be something if you I'd be like, I'm gonna go up on this building, but I gotta wait 14 hours for you to get here.
SPEAKER_01You're like, wait, I only broke a bone. She's gonna fuck me up. The fear, the fear that it doesn't actually go into completion. You're like, fuck. I'm so fucked. I would Kathy, I would misery your ass. I'd be like Kathy Bathe in misery. Oh my god, bitch. I might let you. She's like, okay. Oh Lord. Oh, I'll bring you to Wisconsin.
SPEAKER_00Oh no, no, don't do that. I keep it up. My ass on the east coast. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER_01Keep it up, keep it up. So keep that's that's that's one shh silver lining.
SPEAKER_00I live on the east coast. Not a lot of good that did, but I live on the east coast. Until next time, I'm Lisa. And I'm Agnes, and we are out of here. See you later bye.
