Um, and it's kind of I like the fact that whatever genetic makeup Desmond has, that he kind of he flash it, like he's able to go, you know, that flashing and kind of go between parallel, whatever really worked out for him in this one.

But but Daniel is acknowledged as his son, and his last name is Whidmore, as opposed to Penny. And right.

Wait, the smoke monks, the smoke monster, and then the polar bear, and then you hit a button. What there was a it's kind of hard to and then you kept asking me, so what do you think? I was like, I don't fucking know. I fucking tripping on acid.

He's like, Penny, Penny! She's like, ah, you're not in the hospital, shut up. Penny. Charles Woodmore says that you can't see Penny because you don't stuff happen. Yeah, you know, you were shot by Benjamin Linus, and Desmond is just like, Penny! But Whidmore's like, dude, she's not here. Like we kidnapped you and we brought you to the island.

But Widmore's like, hmm, the island's not done with you yet. Widmore leaves the room. And Jin, who was standing outside, asks Widmore what Desmond is doing on the island. And Whidmore's like, well, let me just show you. So they bring Joe Joey.

I do have a smelly cat. Um okay. Widmore tells Zoe, aka Discount Tina Fe, to bring Jin to the generator room where they can start the test. She's like, um, the test isn't scheduled yet, but Whidmore is like, just go fucking do what I say. So Zoe leads Jin outside, past the generators, past all the equipment, the cables, like they look like they're building a fucking bridge in New York City, okay, with all this equipment. And upstairs, preparations are underway with laptops and monitors, all kinds of electrical controls. Seamus says that they're not even close to being ready. They test the generator at full power, but it fails. So Seamus sends a technician, Seamus, aka somebody who uh really I don't think ever had a name before. Um, also Simmons never had a name before. If they did, I missed it. So Simmons goes into the outside unit, but in the control room, the technician is like, oh hey, look, we just we forgot to turn the power on. And it's like that was the dumbest move ever. Like the sibling of somebody saying, Oh, hey, I see you're fixing the toaster oven with a screwdriver. Let me plug it in.

Winmore arrives and asks Zoe whether they are ready because, you know, they brought Desmond in. Well, let me say, they dragged him in. And well, he's like, he's looking at the dead man like, oh fuck. They take the dead guy out, they put Desmond in, and he's like, Well, if what I heard about you is true, then Domar, you'll be fine. They tie him to a chair, and they're like, once the experiment is over, I'm gonna ask you to make a sacrifice. Desmond is like, bitch, what do you know about sacrifice? And Woodmore tells him that his son died here for the sake of the island. I feel like Desmond should have been like, what son? Like I'm married to your fucking daughter. You're not a stranger. What son?

Okay, so for a hot second, the fact that he didn't say anything made me doubt myself. I'm like, wait, I'm like, I'm doing the math one plus one.

He says that Penny hates him and that he hasn't even met his grandson. If I was Desmond, I'd be like, tell me who your son is, and maybe you can meet your grandson. But then she's gonna spit out her water. And he says that if Desmond won't help, it will all be for nothing, as everyone will be gone forever. And then they lock the door. Back in the control room, Jen is like, I demand to know what happened what's happening. Whitmore explains that Desmond is the only person known to have survived a catastrophic electromagnetic event, and that he needs to know that Desmond can do it again or we all die. He orders the experiment to be turned on. The CCTV shows Desmond free his hands, and he's trying to escape from the room. And then he's like in the electromagnetism. I don't know, how do you say that? He's in it. He's in it.

There you go. Most of this episode is is a flash sideways, but in the flash sideways, Desmond's reflection is seen in the oceanic arrivals board at LAX as he's looking at it, lost in thought. Hurley passes and is like, oh, baggage in carousel four at the carousel. He sees Claire struggling with her bag, and Desmond helps her. He sa he asks her whether she is expecting a boy or a girl, and she says she doesn't know. He says she's braver than he because he's not a fan of surprises. He offers her a ride, she says no, and then he says, You haven't a boy. Outside, well I guess not really outside, but Desmond is then met by George Minkowski, his driver. He asks to be taken to the office. George offers lovely ladies for companionship, and when Desmond says he's here to work, George says, That is why Desmond is the boss's right-hand man, and he is the driver. I know you remember him, but if anybody listening doesn't, he was the one on the ship, on the freighter that was he wasn't the first one to die from the time traveling, but I I think that he was the first one that we saw die. Like we s yeah, we saw it.

You're welcome. At the office, Desmond is greeted by Whidmore's assistant, who sends him into Whidmore's office, and they greet each other warmly. Uh Whidmore is on the phone and he's telling the person to get him arranged and get him out of there. Whidmore explains that his son, who happens to be a musician, wanted to combine classical music with rock at a charity event that Mrs. Whidmore is hosting. He says that the bass guitarist for Driveshaft overdosed and was arrested. And then he asks Desmond to babysit the musician and get him to the event. Otherwise, Mrs. Whidmore will be angry. Desmond agrees to help and Whidmore states that he is grateful to have someone he trusts to do the job. He adds that Desmond really has He adds that Desmond really has the life being free of all attachments. And then he pours a 60-year-old McCutcheon whiskey to celebrate Desmond's indispensability. Indispensable, somebody pour me a drink. I'm fresh out. But this is also um a big I think my brain cells just fell out of my head. Um but this is also a big shift because in previous episodes we saw him pour himself a glass and tell Desmond that he wasn't worth it.

Also, I didn't see the painting, but I still saw that damn ship. But it was a model of it. I was like, this I'm like, these would be so proud of me. But I I keep that.

So Desmond goes to the courthouse and he picks up Charlie Pace. He introduces himself and Charlie ignores him and just starts to walk across the road, oblivious to traffic, and into a bar named Jax. Desmond joins him aside, and Charlie asks if he is happy. When Desmond reels off evidence of his material success, Charlie says that what he is talking about is spectacular, consciousness altering love. And then Charlie tells him a story about how he saw a blonde woman in a vision while he was about to die from choking on the bag of heroin. Charlie says, I've seen something real. I've seen the truth. Desmond says the real truth is not this vision of love, but the necessity of making a choice between continuing to drink or coming with Desmond to play at the charity show. As they drive away, Charlie tells Desmond that the song on the radio was Drive Shafts' first single and says ruefully that it was the beginning of everything great. You all everybody. Or getting out of the car. He grabs a steering wheel and they careen off a pier into the water. The car sinks. Desmond frees himself, and when he can't release Charlie's seatbelt, he swims to the surface. He dives back down and goes to Charlie's door. Charlie wakes and staring at Desmond raises his palm to the window. For a moment, Desmond sees Charlie show his palm at the looking glass with the words not Penny's boat. He looks again and the vision is gone. He gets a door open and brings Charlie to the surface. Now at the hospital, a doctor examines Desmond and she asks whether he has had hallucinations. Desmond pauses and says that he's not sure. So the doctor wants to do an MRI, but Desmond says that he doesn't have time and he needs to find the person he was brought to the hospital with. But the doctor is like, um, no, you need an MRI. While Desmond is prepped for the MRI, he's given a panic button and asks not to press it. Otherwise, they'll have to start all over again. It's like in one timeline, press the button. In the other timeline, don't press the button.

Desmond sees the vision of Charlie at the looking glass. He then sees a glowing cavalcade of his life with Penny and their love for one another. And so he presses the button.

He says to the tech that he has to go find Charlie. And then he sees Jack and he's like, Oh, hey, you, it's you, brother. And Desmond asks, and Jack is like, so he was on the plane, and you were on the plane, and now you're all here.

And Desmond's like, that would have had me fucked up too. So Jack, same.

Right. And then Charlie runs down the hall and is like naked.

Half naked with the over the hotel thing. And you know his ass was showing because they don't ever come.

So Desmond runs after him, and Charlie says that he's running because no one at the hospital can help him. He denies trying to kill Desmond, but instead says that he was trying to show him something. Desmond wants to see his hand, and Charlie realizes that Desmond must have seen something. And Desmond asks, Who is Penny? I'm sorry, who is Penny? Charlie says that he that's how he says it. Charlie says that he's not going to perform because none of this matters. And as he leaves, Charlie says to stop worrying about him and go start looking for Penny. So Desmond calls Whidmore and he's like, hey, by the way, uh, I lost your musician. You see what happened though. Yeah. So what happened was, and Whidmore is like, okay, well, you can tell my wife.

You tell Mrs. Whidmore. That's what he calls her. He calls her Mrs. Whidmore.

So he goes to the natural history museum and George, the driver, in this timeline, asks whether Desmond has ever met her. And he implies that she's a difficult person. Desmond introduces himself to Mrs. Woodmore. She is charming. And she says it's about time they met. She instructs him to call her Eloise. Desmond tries to explain to her what happened, and she's like, Yeah, it's cool. My son will understand, because you know, rock stars. Desmond is like, but are you angry? And she's like, not at all, dear. What happened happened. Desmond is like confused as fuck. Desmond is confusion. As he's leaving, Desmond hears the name Penny read from a list of guests. He goes and he wants to see the list, and Eloise is like, no, no, no, no, no. She takes him aside and she's like, you need to stop. Whatever you think you're looking for, just stop. You don't need to look for anything. You have the perfect life, and you have attained the thing that you wanted more than anything. The approval of Charles Whidmore. She adds that it is, in fact, a violation. When he presses her about the list, she says he can't see the list because he's not ready yet. He goes back to the limo, he has a drink, and a knock comes to the window. Now the man knows Desmond's name and he introduces himself as Daniel Whidmore. He says they need to talk. Desmond starts to apologize because he failed at being a rock star babysitter. But Daniel asks if he believes in love at first sight. Okay. Show aside, it's like, hi, my name is Lisa. Nice to meet you. I know you don't know me, but do you believe in love at first sight? I'm sorry, but I'd be like, are you hitting on me?

Okay, stop. We need to wow, okay. Okay, Daniel, not Faraday, starts to tell Desmond about his love for Redhead who works at the museum. It's like, hi, nice to meet you. I really love this lady. I mean, okay. In in the bananas world of all things that are lost, this is like cuckoo coconut bananas, okay? I don't crazy. I don't even know the words. But he says when he saw her, it was as if he already loved her. He states that on the same night he woke and wrote in his notebook, and then he shows Desmond the notebook and explains that a mathematician friend said that these were advanced quantum mechanic equations which would need a lifetime of study to understand. He tries to explain to Desmond that it's as if something catastrophic had been about to happen, and the only way to stop it had been to release a huge amount of energy, like setting off a nuclear bomb. He rhetorically asks whether this life was not meant to be, and whether there had been another life in which, for some reason, we changed things. So we go to Penny. Penny. She is exercising in a stadium doing a tour de stad. Desmond watches her running up the stairs, down the stairs, up and down. No. Desmond watches her running the stairs and he approaches. She sees him and she smiles. He asks if she is Penny, and he introduces himself. They reach over and shake hands. Back on the island, Desmond suddenly opens his eyes. Seamus and the other texts go into the chamber and find Desmond alive. Widmore asks how he is, and Desmond wants to know how long he's been unconscious, but it's only a few seconds. Widmore states that his talent is vital to the mission and begins to explain why, but Desmond interrupts and says he understands and he's ready to begin doing whatever is required. Zoe and two others escort Desmond back to their base. Zoe is surprised at Desmond's willingness. He's like, um, a few minutes ago you wanted to like kick his ass. And Desmond says, a lot can happen in 20 minutes. Saeed leaps out of the bushes, he quickly gets rid of the escorts, points a gun at Zoe, and he tells her to run. She takes his advice. Said says to Desmond that these people are extremely dangerous, and that he and Desmond need to go now. And Desmond is like, of course, lead the way. Back in Flash Sideways Land, Desmond revives and asks what happened. Penny explains that he fainted when they shook hands and that she must have quite an effect on him. He agrees. She asks if they've met before, and Desmond says they would that he would have remembered. Desmond invites Penny to coffee and they make plans to meet in an hour. He returns to the limousine and George, who is inside of it, asks Desmond whether he found what he was looking for. Desmond says he did. And that's the end of the episode. So many times that we have a Desmond episode, it it moves away from like the I don't want to say traditional format, because obviously we've seen different formats, but it does. And I like them the best. Desmond is a really good character.
