Okay, so it's 1976 in the flashback. As a child, Sawyer is placed under his bed by his mother. She tells him not to come out from under it, no matter what. He lays there and hears a gunshot from outside the room. The door opens and a man enters. Sawyer's father sits on his son's bed and shoots himself.

Can we just talk about what a scary fucking scene this is?

I don't want to use the word traumatized lightly, but watching, I was like, Yeah. It's triggering. Yes, very much so.

I mean, this is this is before trigger warning. But if this episode was on today, there would be a trigger warning before that scene played, I'm sure of it. Even when I was a first-time watcher, this gives you so much more depth to him. And even though we kind of knew from the letter, you don't realize how traumatic that was for him as a character.

And being in it in that moment, seeing it with him is awful. And to be quite honest, like I've always liked Sawyer, always liked him. But at this point, you have to look like a city when he's gone through. He's pretty, he's pretty normal. Like, I think his behavior is a little pushing. He's like, he's digging when he talks to people. But the messages he's trying to get across and relate to people make sense. The way he does it, you're like, okay, dude. But he's pretty damn normal considering what he's been through as a child. Like, I couldn't even imagine all that fun stuff that he had, you know. Yeah.

Next flashback is in 2004. Years later, Sawyer enters the hotel room with a young woman named Mary Joe. They kiss, but before they can continue, a man reveals himself. Sawyer recognizes him as Hibbs and ushers Mary Jo out. He threatens the intruder due to some apparent history between the two. Hibbers Sawyer a document to make them even for the Tampa Job. Hibbs explains that he has found the real Mr. Sawyer, the man who conned Sawyer's parents and caused his father to shoot his mother and then himself. Hibbs tells him the man, now named Frank Ducket, is in Australia. Over here we get mention of the Tampa Job, which must have been some shit, and Frank Ducett, who we met in Australia. Arriving in Australia, Sawyer heads out to the harbor to acquire a gun from one of Hibbs' contacts. The man warns Sawyer that you never know yourself until you point a gun at a man. Sawyer heads to a shrimp stand where Ducket is working. Did you recognize Ducket?

It's Cyrus. Yes, it's scandal. Okay, yes. He loads the gun and has a perfect opportunity to kill the man. But after engaging in conversation with the man, Sawyer finds he cannot go through with his plan. And Frank turns around to see nothing but a car driving away. Sawyer heads to a bar, drinking shot after shot, and meets Jack's father.

Yes, I saw I caught that one. I thought that was so funny. Did you realize it was him before they showed his face? No, I don't yeah, no. I'm not that into the show that I recognize voices. But once I showed, I'm like, oh shit, that's so funny. And I saw us talking, I'm like, oh shit. Okay.

The two chat, and Christian mentions his trademark saying, that's why the Red Sox will never win the World Series. Who, as a side note, won the fucking series that year. Fucking Red Sox. Okay. Yeah. Had they won before the episode was aired? They had already won, I want to say, when the episode aired. This was as a Yankee fan, this was the worst year ever. Okay?

At the same time, shit's happening on the island. It's kind of paralleling. So is it that these are these flashbacks or something these people are always thinking about in their lives? Or is the island in their heads? Dun dun dun. No, this this is just me being silly. Ignore me. Paralleling to islands, what's happening at the island?

Uh, where was I? Okay. Okay, we fucking read. All right. He also talks about his son who hates him, and that Christian is truly more proud of him than his son will ever know. Christian says that one phone call to his son could fix everything, but he is too weak to do it. Sawyer says that his business in Australia would ease his suffering, and so Christian convinces him that he must do it. At night, torrential rain hits as Ducett puts out the trash. Sawyer watches him from his car and pulls out his gun. He walks over to Frank, says Sawyer, and shoots him in the chest. He pulls the letter he has carried since he was a child and begins to read it. However, as he says, Dear Mr. Sawyer, Ducett's response of who causes him to stop. Sawyer realizes that Hibb has lied to him. Ducett was merely in debt to Hibbs and Hibb tricked Sawyer into being his free mercenary. Before he dies, Frank's last words are that it'll come back around. A stunned Sawyer stares at what he has done. Two things. One, I have used that phrase in a previous episode, and I know that you wouldn't have known. It'll come back around.

I hope. And two, this is the second time we see Sawyer shoot somebody and fuck it up for some reason. Well, technically speaking, it really wasn't his fuck up. He was used. No, no, no. You're right. But remember, we're seeing it opposite. So he shoots this guy and then realizes it's the wrong guy. Wrong guy. And I and maybe when he should shot the marshal, it was kind of like redemption for him. And then he fucked up. And then that's why he felt even worse about it. Because this would have been the right guy.

See, I love him even more now, poor dude. Okay, on the island. On the island is day 29. Sawyer wakes up to find a boar ransacking his tent. He chases it into the jungle, but before he returns, he hears whispers. Among them are the faint words, it'll come back around. The next morning, day 30, Sawyer tries to salvage items from the wreckage left by the boar. Said arrives to mock him, and Sawyer asks him.

So next morning, that's okay. Sawyer tries to salvage items from the wreckage left by the boar. Said arrives to mock him, and Sawyer asks him about what he heard when he was returning to camp after being kidnapped by the French woman. Said speaks about the whispers, but Sawyer shrugs it off when asked if he heard them too. So they both hear whispers and then they both kind of deny it. So much could be just solved, and if you know, if they would just talk to each other.

In the jungle, Kate returns a gun to Jack that she had borrowed. Jack mentions that there is one gun left to get back, and Sawyer has it. While Jack does not mind, Kate is adamant she can get it. Meanwhile, at the caves, Claire tells Charlie that she has started to remember things through dreams about him. Her attempts to reach out to him don't seem to work, however, as Charlie brushes off her offer of going for a walk together. Sawyer is tracking the boar in the jungle when he once again hears whispers. And again, hears, it'll come back around. The boar then appears behind him, charging straight ahead. Sawyer tries to run, but the boar knocks him to the ground in the mud. Son of a bitch.

Okay, so this whole thing with Sawyer and the Boar is cracking me the fuck up. I think it's the funniest storyline thus far. And I kind of feel if Sawyer and the Boar could just like talk it out. Boar to man to boar and come to a resolution. You know, get the same page about shit. I think they can work it out, you know.

Back at his tent, Kate is enjoying herself as Sawyer tells her about what has happened. He is convinced that the boar is harassing him, and he grabs his gun to take revenge. Further down the beach, Hurley and Charlie drag Ethan's body to an area where he can be buried. Hurley asks Charlie if he is alright, but he does not respond. Hurley heads for Saeed's tent saying he thinks Charlie might be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder as he has recently shot and killed a man. This scene between Charlie and Hurley is funny and sweet. It's sweet because Hurley is aware that Charlie is suffering and he's trying to look out for him. But it's funny because he's like, I know how this ends. He comes back to life and he gets me because I'm big and I get cramps.

I'm a little offended how everyone kind of like side-eyes and demiss and dismisses Hurley when he says something, but he always has a valid point that he's making. They're kind of like, no side, you know, not the whole they're gonna come back to life and kill me.

Maybe because I'm always side-eyed and put off to the side with so I take offense to it for him. I feel your pain, my brother.

Kate catch. Up with Sawyer in the jungle, highlighting his complete inability to track the boar. I still think it's the funniest shit ever. She offers to help him in return for car carte blanche. A blank check. If she wants anything from his stash in the future, she will get it. No questions asked. Sawyer reluctantly agrees. As night falls, the two may camp and Sawyer offers Kate some liquor from the plane if she will play a game of I Never with him. You wanna play?

The two then ask each other a number of questions, revealing a lot of sensitive facts, such as that Kate was once married. The game ends dramatically, however, as both drink when the topic of I never killed a man revealing that they both have at a point in their past. Sawyer says it looks like they have something in common after all. You wanna play I Never? Okay. So you drink when you've done it, right? Mm-hmm.

From last night? The past week. During the night, Sawyer dreams of his childhood hiding under the bed. Instead of his father in the room, however, he sees a boar and hears it'll come back around once again. The next day, Kate wakes him up saying he's shaking. They realize that the camp has been attacked by the boar for a second time, but that it only destroyed Sawyer's items and left Kate untouched. Locke finds them, saying he was looking for plane wreckage and thought he would come say hello. They tell him about recent events and Locke talks about a dog that appeared to his foster mother after her daughter died. The pet stayed with her, sleeping on the daughter's bed every night until his mother died. Kate asks whether he thought it was his sister, but Locke says that what mattered was his mother's belief in it.

I find it animals know when you need them. I I firmly believe that in some cosmic kind of way. And I'll say more about the boar and Sawyer at the end of this little synopsis you give.

I like the way Locke approached it. First of all, when he comes into the scene, Sawyer's all pissed off and bent out of shape about the boar. And he hears the noise and he pulls his gun. Locke comes in sucking on a mango, like sub dudes.

And then tells the story about the dog. And then he's like, well, that's just silly. Like, totally unfazed. And so Locke is telling the story about his sister who broke his neck and dog. And Sawyer's face is like, what the fuck? You can see he's like looking over at Kate like, what the fuck? Is this man on crack? Like, what in the ever loving fuck? He don't know what to do. He don't know. If he should just shut up and listen or be like, shut the fuck up. Like, what's wrong with you, man? Like, like, how does this have anything to do with a book?

If there's like an MVP of episode of the episode, I think Locke would be it for this episode. Absolutely. Just for that scene. Absolutely. Said finds Charlie by the shore, and Charlie soon understands why he is there. Charlie says he feels no guilt over what happened, as it was to protect the survivors from an evil man. Said tells Charlie about the first man he killed and how he woke up every night after for a long time before he could accept what he had done. What happened with Ethan will be with Charlie for the rest of his life, and Saeed says that he is not alone, whether he pretends he is or not. Sawyer and Kate manage to find the boar's waddle and discover a baby hog. Sawyer waves the boar in the air to attract his parent, much to Kate's disgust. She shouts for him to let the defenseless creature go, and on his refusal, she kicks his leg, causing him to trip and release the piglet. There she goes hitting him again. He likes hitting him. She tells him to find his own way home and walks away. Continuing his search, Sawyer finally comes face to face with the adult boar. He pulls out his gun, ready to shoot, but decides he cannot kill it. The similarities between the boar and Zucket in his past are not lost on Sawyer. And when Kate reveals herself again, Sawyer says, It's just a boar. He heads back to camp. At the beach, Charlie finds Claire, offering to take that walk with her now. The two head off along the beach as Charlie finally confronts his feelings about killing a man. Elsewhere, Jack is chopping wood when Sawyer arrives with his gun. He eventually hands it over. And when Jack says, That's why the Sox will never win the series, Sawyer remembers Christian saying the same thing on Australia. He realizes the son Christian spoke of was Jack, but says nothing.

Why do you think he didn't say anything? Because that's just Sawyer being Sawyer. We learned Sawyer's real first name in this episode. I'm sure we did. It's James. I knew that. I know. I know you did. I was just helping you. I was just reminding you. Yeah, you reminded, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We get our first direct crossover between Christian and Sawyer.

I mean, obviously it was deliberate to only shoot it that way. And I guess it I guess in some ways it's probably scarier to have the child's perspective. Yeah. And it's funny because in the scene with Christian, he even mentions how he must have misplaced his wallet. And that goes back to when Jack is talking to the hotel guy and he's like, oh, and he left his wallet here.

In a previous episode, you mentioned that Sawyer wanted to be punished for his past. So after seeing this episode, do you still agree? Why or why not?

SPEAKER_02 31:47

First of all, I'm very deep at times. Okay, um, even when I'm not even trying to be. Yeah, just to piggyback off what you said earlier about I killed he killing the wrong person. And I think on some level, back to his past trauma as a child, children unfortunately take on things that are not their fault. And I think on some level, when it's a traumatic experience, what he's gone through, I think he took on some of that guilt, survivor's guilt or whatever. And on top of who knows what her life was growing up after that. But um, yeah, I think that on top of killing the wrong person, and he's just kind of fucked up about it. He needs to be punished. He feels he deserves to be punished, he doesn't deserve to have whatever people think you deserve in life. So yeah, I stand by that. I think the reasoning I said it changed, knowing more, but I still stand by it. One more question. Just one.

Lord have mercy. Um, in Sawyer's case, let's see. What can it mean? What do I think it means, and what do you think he what I think he thinks it means?

Well, obviously the the easy answer is karma. Like everything would you put out, you get back. I um I honestly believe that. Um you put out negative things and in it, you put out negative things, it comes back to you. You could have positive, it comes back to you. It'll come back around with him. It could mean a plethora of things. It could it can mean you're gonna get your chance to make things right, at least in his mind, in his own head. It can also be like whatever the real story did to you, it's gonna come back to him. It could be anything and everything. I'm not drunk enough to be this deep today.

Her contract was adjusted by as ABC gave the show a full season pickup, ordering the nine additional episodes needed to complete the season order. Ian Summerholder, Boone, and Maggie Grace, Shannon, did not appear in this episode. This is the first time either character had been absent. Sun and Jin and Michael appear without speaking lines. And this episode marks the first appearance of the raft. And it's all comes right up. Right, right, right, right. Yeah. Characters.
