Before we get started about this episode, I'm gonna tell you what pisses me off about Lost. I feel like the episodes like they hear my thoughts because before I get ready to watch the episode, I might go a week between watching the episodes.

And I start every so often thinking about the episodes and the characters and what stupid questions Lisa's gonna ask me about this show. So we should be on video. Best episode ever. Um, so I come up with these thoughts, and like, okay, you know what? This is what I think. Like, I jot down on my phone, my little notepad on my phone, like things to talk to Lisa about, things to mention to Lisa. And in each episode, my thoughts or my my evaluations of what's gonna happen. Literally, that episode that I'm about to watch, it's like it proves my point or dispels my point. I'm like, wait, what the fuck?

Okay, it won't be a it won't be a spoiler as you're reading off to people. Let me so the show is haunting me. And I just want you to know that I fell down to the rabbit hole. I don't like it. Like it at all. So I don't think Jen is dead. Okay, neither do I think Claire was is dead in the flash forwards. I think they just didn't get off the island. Okay, so they're dead because how's they gonna explain it once the oceanic six got found? Can't say, oh, some of us decided to stay. Yeah, no, it's not exactly so that was that. The hurley thing. I don't know if we'll uh I know what we can wait till we start we get to that point of the synopsis. Okay, but these are the points that I was thinking about like the week leader to me watching it, and I'm like, fuck you, you'll make me feel like I'm not paying attention. Like you just I'm not getting the answer. Like I feel like it's an open book test. No, it's not an open book test. I knew that I had my thoughts before the book opened, okay? I filled out my test before it started. Okay.

I don't, I don't, I don't like it. It's me. No, because they give me the answer before I can like record. You know what I mean? Because it's not like, oh well, she recorded the week before, and look what happened with the next episode. No, it's literally between week and recording, and I'm like, uh, and everyone's like, well, duh, the episode told you that. I'm like, no, it didn't. I was perceptive and uh and and I was paying attention and I've been thinking about stuff between episodes. I'm doing my homework.

Let's get into the episode. On the island at the beach, Juliette repeatedly attempts to wake Jack from his slumber and he finally regains consciousness, but he's disoriented. He gets up and leaves his tent with Juliet. A group including Rose Bernard, Son, and Jin, argue with Daniel and Charlotte. Bernard confronts Daniel about why the satellite phone got a signal the night before, but now cannot contact the freighter. Jack intervenes and agrees with Bernard that Daniel and Charlotte have been lying to everyone. He reassures the survivors that eventually the freighter people will come for Daniel and Charlotte, and when they do, they will all be ready. Jack tells everyone to just remain patient and that he will keep his promise to get them off the island. He walks off, bends over in pain, and faints. Soon after, Jack comes too as Kate rushes towards him. She worries, feeling his forehead and commenting that he has a fever, but he brushes it off as need for rest. Later, Jack takes more antibiotics when Juliette comes in. He dismisses the pain as food poisoning and dehydration, but she disagrees. Jack tries to deter her, but she insists on examining him. She fails his abdomen and tells him that he has appendicitis. He tells her it hasn't ruptured yet, but Juliette says their only option is to take it out before it does. Juliette speaks to Sun and gives her a list of medical supplies needed for the appendectomy and asks her to go with Jin to the staff to get them. Sun tells her that she doesn't know what the instruments look like, so Daniel offers to help, explaining that he's performed animal autopsies in the past and has experience with the tools needed. Side question. I understand why Send's son, because Sun knew where it is. But when Sun says, Well, I don't know what they look like, my first thought is why wouldn't you get Bernard to go with her? He's a dentist.

I think well, I I took it as she needed Bernard to help her prep for the actual surgery. That's why I just assumed. She just needs that helping hand to get everything situated.

Yeah, I guess I mean that does make sense, but it was just like you know, to the point where they're like, okay, you could help, and then she hands Jin a gun, like shoot him if they run, and it's like that's a whole lot of trouble. And why not just ask Bernard?

But I also I I I don't think it gave you that much. I mean, you miss out on the drama.

And then no, because still they still outnumber them. I don't know. I just think it was just a writer's like this is the best way to do it, so they can be protagonists on whenever whenever protagonists and antagonists, whatever scene they're at.

Sun voices her distrust, but Charlotte responds antagonistically. Daniel berates her about being distant and pessimistic and causing the survivors distrust of them. He repeats his offer of aid, assuring everyone that he and Charlotte are only scientists, that they didn't sign up for whatever else is going on, and that they just want everyone to be safe. Juliet accepts her help, but gives Shin a gun and tells him to shoot Daniel or Charlotte in the leg if either of them try to run. Juliet then asks everyone to prepare a sterile environment for the surgery. While washing down a table for the surgery, Bernard sees that Rose looks unsettled. They discuss why Jack got sick. Bernard chalks it up to bad luck, but Rose thinks that it isn't a coincidence that Jack has fallen ill just when they are about to be rescued. She's worried since she knows that people do not get sick on the island, they get better. Juliette shaves Jack's abdomen, but Jack is apprehensive as she prepares him for surgery. He asks her if she has experience with this type of procedure, and she informs him that this is not her first time performing an epidectomy. It does not seem to appease him though. He asks her if she's certain because she's shaving two inches above where the incision would have to be made, and Juliet assures him yet again that she knows what she's doing. Jack decides that he doesn't want to be unconscious during the operation and wants to walk Juliet through it and for Kate to hold up a mirror that would let him watch the surgery's progress. Fucking doctors.

Doctors make the worst patients, and the lawyer that has himself as a client has like you know what I'm saying? I s and then you know, I think all doctors are kind of like hesitants to let it go to anyone, but he especially so. Narcissistic asshole. You can tell he's my favorite character.

Yeah, oh yeah. Juliet doesn't like the idea and suggests that if anyone is in the tent with them during the surgery, it should be someone with medical experience like Bernard. Jack insists that he wants Kate to be there holding the mirror, and Juliet concedes. Jin's son Daniel and Charlotte arrive at the staff. As they enter, Daniel offers to go in front of Charlotte to make sure that it's safe. They exchange a grin and a nod, while Jin asks Sun in Korean if Charlotte realizes Daniel likes her. Sun replies that Charlotte knows because she's a woman. Charlotte coyly looks back at them and smiles as they all walk into the station, which does not go unnoticed by Jin.

After entering the hatch, Daniel looks around and wonders aloud where all the power for the station is coming from. Sun is emotional and Jin asks what's wrong. They share a conversation in Korean about how this is where Juliet brought Sun and where she saw their baby for the first time. Sun talks about her desire to get off the island, realizing that Charlotte and Daniel and their people are not here to rescue them. Jin promises her that he will do everything to get her and their baby off the island. During the conversation, Charlotte and Daniel load various medical supplies into a bag as Charlotte continually glances back at the couple. At the beach, Juliette finds Kate and asks her for an extra set of hands, saying that she could use them for Jack's surgery. Kate doesn't think it's a good idea, but Juliet tells Kate about Jack wanting to watch a surgery and expresses her embarrassment. Kate laughs. Juliette asks why, and the two joke about Jack's stubbornness. Kate says she's surprised he's not taking it out himself. Bernard and a fellow losty have taken a stretcher to Jack's tent when he stumbles out of it. Seeing the stretcher, he starts walking toward the surgical tent. Juliette and Kate protest, but Jack dismisses them, saying he can walk fifty feet. Kate offers to help him and he leans on her. Kate walks Jack over to the surgery tent, saying it looks like she will be his nurse. Jack tells her it wouldn't be the first time. Jack starts to tell Kate if something happens to me during surgery, but Kate cuts him off with shut up, Jack. And he replies, Fair enough. That evening, when the group returns from the staff, Jin calls Charlotte over. He says to her in Korean, I know you understand me. While she tries to pretend that she doesn't understand him, he tells her that he knows she speaks Korean because he saw her smile when Sun was speaking to him about her. And Charlotte acts as if she still doesn't understand until Jin says that if she does not stop lying, he will break Daniel's fingers one at a time.

And the funny thing is, it made me chuckle. Because obviously, uh of course we know his past, but it's funny because everyone else doesn't know. But the people from the ship knows everyone their past. So I found this to be extremely funny. She's like, because she knows he can do it and will do it. And I'm like, oh, that's funny. I don't know.

With the exception of the episode The Other Woman, like we have we have come so far from that version of Jinn.

And it really sometimes I have to remind myself technically, this is what two months?

Right, right.

Right. So you're like four years later, no, wait, no, two months.

SPEAKER_01 14:50

And so now we're so used to seeing this team player Jinn, this this Jinn who's learning English for son, and you know, who's who's just trying to be like the best husband that he can be, the best member of the group, you know, friendly.

But the enforcer really was him just a couple months ago. That's what he that's what he did. And you're like, well, yeah, that I think that's also a a test testament.

Okay. I'm like, my my brain is a little foggy this morning, but um, you know how how he could switch back into that that role so seamlessly that it puts us right back there to that too, yeah. And it's like a complete different person. And he's he's an amazing actor, just to to be able to do that for for our sake.

And because you I didn't think about that far as an actor, but as a character, as a person, the character is the djinn that we see now is who he really is, because this is who he was before he got involved with his with her father, right? So I feel like he's like, Oh, I'm I can be me again. Yeah, he's like, but hey, yeah, no, to protect my family, I'll be the other guy too. And it goes back to everyone has that in them. There's two wolves, and it depends on which one you feed.

And people don't actually, I I think this character completely embodies that in the best possible way. Because even as an enforcer, I still liked him. Well, he was he was doing it not because he wanted to, he did it because he had to. He didn't get joy from it.

Right, he did it because he had to, in order to like he thought it was what he needed to do to be son's husband.

Which he kinda had to, to be f Right. He kind of had it was either that or die. You know, I mean, let's be real. You don't think her father was gonna wouldn't take him out if necessary? Totally, yeah. Okay, I'm done. My brain shot, my brain went woo-roo-doo, not enough alcohol, sorry.

Well, but you know, like after he says this, Charlotte immediately is like, oh shit. So in Korean, she asks what he wants, and Jin answers that he wants son on the helicopter when it leaves the island. And Charlotte says, But what about the others? And he cuts her off, saying, His only concern is for son and the baby. She nods, Jin leaves, and as she leaves, as he leaves, sorry, she smiles.

This the part, the scene in the medical, in the lab, whatever, he goes out directly at dude to protect to get you off this island. At that point, I'm like, okay, fuck you, lost. That's when I was just like, okay, you read my mind. Like, I was just like, really, really? And then of course, this thing happened. I'm like, yeah, uh-huh. I'm gonna have to like send you not notes, but we're gonna have I'm gonna have to send you like voice notes when I think of things, so you can like, nope, this is the proof. She thought of it before. It wasn't that I believe you. Not you. I mean, not that you wouldn't, but I kind of want to document it for the three listens that we have here.

Fine. In the surgical tent, Juliette, Kate, and Bernard prepare for the operation. Bernard suggests to Jack that he knock him out with chloroform that was brought back from the medical station, saying, Wouldn't you rather be dreaming about something nice back home? But Jack refuses.

Jack 'cause Jack is the man. Jack is superman. Jack's a fucking dick.

SPEAKER_01 18:41

No, just wait. But wait, there's more. But wait, exactly. Bernard injects local anesthetic, and Juliet makes the first incision while Kate holds the mirror, enabling Jack to see. Jack grunts and yells as Juliet begins to spread the incision. Kate becomes increasingly upset as Jack repeats her name, at first to get her to adjust the mirror's position and then without a clear purpose. Kate starts to cry, but Juliet takes over, ordering Bernard to knock Jack out and for Kate to leave. Bernard places a chloroform rag over Jack's mouth and he passes out. Bernard is so cute, he's like, I'm sorry, Jack, but I agree. Like he he's just an adorable little old man.

I think this is the best scene, the best of Jack have ever seen was him knocked out. He was already asleep. He didn't say nothing. Best screen time ever.

Oh, also, like, I like when Juliet was prepping him for the surgery. And when Jack asks her if this is the first time she's done it, and she's like, What? Shave a man? Shave a man.

And I answered with like um no to both of them, but okay.

Outside the tent after surgery, Bernard tells Kate that everything went fine, that Juliet did well, and Kate can go back inside. But like, in fairness, we realize that the flashes are flash forwards in this episode, and Jack is alive. So it's like spoiler alert, he makes it through the surgery.

I mean, I think we all knew irregardless, I love that word. I'm so happy it's a word now. And I never would have used it seriously before it became a word, but it was kind of one of those words that you have to use knowing it wasn't a word. But now that it's a word, I'm using it more often. But irregardless of the flash forwards, I think it was safe to assume that he wasn't gonna go anywhere. Because some of the characters I think are just empirically, you know they're gonna be safe.

She enters while Juliet stitches Jack's incision and she reassures Kate that he'll be fine. She tells Kate that Jack kissed her the other day. Hardly looking from her work, Juliet continues to tell Kate that the kiss was nice, but it wasn't for her. It was for him. She thinks that he was trying to prove that he doesn't love someone else. The women understand each other, and Kate thanks her for saving Jack's life. Juliet tells Jack that she knows he's awake and he opens his eyes. Did you have any thoughts about that exchange where Juliet's basically implying that it's Kate for him?

No. I mean, because we all knew regardless it's gonna it was gonna be Kate. I mean, whether whether, flash for it aside, whether they actually do have a future together or if it's just something they want but can't, you know, whatever it is. It's I mean, on the flip side, I wouldn't be surprised if he and Juliet ended to be a couple too at some point in the series. Jack and Juliet. It's it also would not surprise me.

Sawyer, Claire, while carrying Aaron and Miles walk through the jungle when they reach a clearing. Claire tells Sawyer that she's feeling much better, but that she still has a headache. At least I'm not seeing things anymore, she says. Miles asks her what she used to see, but Sawyer puts a stop to that conversation. Suddenly, Miles slows and looks uneasy as whispers and flashes swirl about. He stops walking, listens, and asks, Who's Danielle and Carl? He pushes aside the leaf litter and finds their bodies semi-buried in the mud, flies swirling. Sawyer asks Miles how he knew about the two and then accuses Miles' team of killing them. Miles denies that he is on the same team with Kimi and his men. Miles is upset to discover the bodies as he didn't sign up for this. Claire just wants to leave and Sawyer escorts her away, promising that everything will be fine once they make it back to the beach. This whole jungle stuff with Sawyer, Miles, and Claire, it's so interesting and like fascinating because Sawyer and Miles are so similar.

And that's thus yeah. Like if you gave Miles Sawyer's lines, it would still work. Right.

And but seeing Sawyer become the protector and you know, like the uh the quote unquote big brother role in the it does it makes sense because it it's not as far-fetched as one with if you on a surface level, it makes complete sense because Sawyer is a dick. Sawyer did some bad things, but he wasn't a malicious evil person. And the fact that he obviously he was some artist, but I mean, but he wasn't like I mean, like I said, he wasn't a good person.

It's something about it, he still you can see you can still he still have humanity in him when the need when when the situation arose, and obviously with his trauma, there's certain situations that obviously brings out the protector in him.

And I think that you're you're you just hit it with Claire having the baby, I think that's what kind of brings it out of him even more. It's not just Claire, it's the fact that it's Aaron for Aaron to keep mom alive because he didn't get that.

But I still love Sawyer. I've always liked Sawyer, so he's my favorite, and Kate did not deserve does not deserve Sawyer. Go figure. I'm like, I'm team con artists. I don't know how I don't know how to take that. Oh, I don't take it bad at all. That's just who I am.

But he's a con artist. I mean, he he became a con artist as a way of finding the con artist. Right.

Right. It was a means to an end. It's not like he grew up saying, hey, I want to be a con artist when I grow up, or I just hate people, so I'm gonna fuck them all over. I think if his mother ran off to ran off with a random doctor, he probably became a doctor to find the doctor. You know what I mean? I she has she has hangover sleepiness.

Oh, you're so funny. I think this is the best thing. This is the best thing that could have happened for this episode. The day after effects. Yeah, because no one actually like no one knows how we are after we record. Like this is a glimpse of like the after effects. Yeah, do you remember like the first couple at like out at the beginning? We were we were watching record like two, sometimes three episodes in one thing, and how much you could tell the progression of when we record it from fun to like slurring. Oh my god, because we do the whole day of drinking. I there was one recording, Lisa. I went through two bottles of wine. Good times. I feel like I've probably done the same, but yeah, because we were like head to head, tit for tat. It was on and popping.

Maybe that's how much I drank. I don't even fucking remember. But I'm sure I remember I I mean, I remember how many times that I put the straw in the wine bottle.

Yes! You know what? Also, this was during COVID. So what else were we going to do but sit at home and drink?

Woohoo! Well, we we you and I started podcasts kind of like the summer of 2019. That's just when we started doing this stuff, but we didn't release the first episode until December. That's when because we we recorded a few, we banked a few just to, you know, and so then they didn't start getting published until December. And then two, three months later, everything shut down. So then we really were like, okay, cool, let's just let's go hard.

Well, to be fair, at that point, I wasn't working anyway, so I I'm shut down. We did not, I was like, Oh, this is like the everyday for me. I don't do anything anyway. But it was fun to drink at home, but not alone.

So you made it, I didn't feel like a lush because it was like going because everyone was drinking at home, and and then like the worst part is that we had no idea how to kind of do distance recordings, and so I think the first few episodes it was just like recording off of my phone because we were just like on the phone with each other. Was it? I thought we always did a video. No, no, and then we did Skype, Skype, and that didn't work well, and then yeah, the the sound quality was still kind of like shitty, and then thank thankfully there was a pandemic and everyone was like, hey, try Zoom, and we were like awesome. And it worked well because Zoom took off like a lot of the limits of the because everyone was stuck at home, and so it really, really helped in our favor to get better sound. I mean, I know it's not as perfect as some of the the you know higher quality produced podcasts, but for us, like the sound is absolutely this is a m I'ma take I'm gonna take your word for it. How to do this.

Uh-huh. Yep. Later, Claire is caring for Aaron as Miles watches them. Sawyer tells Miles he isn't to talk to Claire, look at Claire, or even think about Claire, and that he officially has a 20-foot restraining order. Miles listens to Sawyer and retreats. Later, Miles tries to persuade Claire to let him help out with Aaron because he's good with kids. Sawyer begins to remind Miles of the restraining order when a rustling comes from the brush. As Sawyer goes to investigate, Frank Lapidas runs out carrying his satellite phone and a first aid kit. He's alarmed and addresses Miles first, while Sawyer seems surprised that the men know each other. Frank tells them there's no time because Kimi and his men are on the way, and if he finds them, he's gonna kill them all, so they must hide immediately. They hide in the nearby bushes and watch as Kimi and his men arrive with Mayhew seriously injured. Lapidas looks at him and asks Kimi what happened. Kimi is evasive and asks where the helicopter is. Frank says it's not far. Aaron makes a little crying noise. Kimi hears something and suspiciously looks around. Frank urges Kimi and his men to get to the helicopter because it's starting to get dark and he will refuse to fly out on Faraday's coordinates in the dark. After a heavy pause, Kimi agrees and they head off. That night, Claire awakens to find Aaron isn't beside her. She looks across the campfire to see Christian Shepherd holding him. Claire recognizes him and exclaims Dad? The next morning, Sawyer notices that Claire is not there. He asks Miles where she is, and Miles says he saw he saw her take off into the jungle. Sawyer doesn't believe that Claire would wander off alone, but Miles says she wasn't alone. She was walking with someone she called Dad. Sawyer demands to know why Miles didn't try to stop her, and Miles mentions his restraining order. As Sawyer's about to rough Miles up, he hears Aaron crying. He finds him on a blanket at the base of a tree, all alone. He picks up the child and yells for Claire repeatedly. So in the actual episode, that's like where it actually ends, but for us, we still have flash forwards.

Jack reminisces that his father used to read him that book, and Kate says, It's nice to hear Jack say good things about his dad. Jack tells her, somewhat wistfully, that his father was a good storyteller. Kate tells Jack that she loves seeing him with Aaron and that she's glad he changed his mind. Jack replies, Me too. Picking her up, she wraps her legs around him as they kiss and he carries her down the hall while she laughs. September first, two thousand seven. Jack is finishing the consult with Miss Merenberg, giving her instructions for her surgery the following day. They part in the hospital lobby. Jack does a double take seeing Christian Shepherd wearing the same blue suit Jack repeatedly saw him wearing on the island. Walking through the lobby, Jack's coworker, doctor Erica Stevenson, calls his name twice to get his attention, wanting his opinion on a spinal x-ray in L4. The receptionist then tells Jack that a doctor Stillman from Santa Rosa Hospital is calling about a friend of yours. Jack goes to Santa Rosa to meet with Dr. Stillman, who says that the patient has been refusing his medication and isn't sleeping. Jack asks about therapy, but Dr. Stillman's Dr. Stillman says therapy is useless because the patient believes Dr. Stillman isn't real. And Jack goes to see Hurley. Hurley says he isn't taking his medication because the Oceanic Six are actually dead and never escaped the island.

Because remember at the trial, he was like, I don't want to be there, and then in this one you see him, so you're like, wait, is this before? Is this yeah. Hurley says that Jack's happy life with Kate and Aaron is proof that they're in heaven, as are his visits from Charlie, who regularly talks to him on a bench outside on the lawn. He tells Jack that when Charlie visited him the day before, he told him of Jack's visit and also gave him a message for Jack, which he made Hurley write down so he would get it exactly. Hurley reads off a scrap of paper, you're not supposed to raise him, Jack. Hurley asks if him means Aaron. Jack is disturbed and tells Hurley to just take his meds. Hurley tells him that Charlie also said Jack will be getting a visitor of his own. Later that night, Jack sits in his truck outside the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute, looking at the bench Hurley described. Later he comes home and wakes Kate. She asks if he was working late, but he says he was out doing errands. Troubled, he asks her about the other night when she said he was a natural with Aaron. Jack asks her if she really thinks he's good at this, and she assures him emphatically that he is. After a long pause, Jack emotionally asks Kate to marry him. He pulls a box with a diamond ring from his pocket and places it on Kate's finger. She tearfully replies Of course I will, yes, and they embrace. September two thousand seven. Jack reviews Ryan Laker's X-ray, recording that there is an osteoblastoma on the posterior area of the lumbar and he is recommending a biopsy. He's interrupted by the persistent beeping of a low battery warning on a smoke detector. He goes to the reception area, climbs onto a chair, and pulls out the battery. After climbing down, Jack is startled to hear his name called out by his father. He turns to see Christian Shepherd sitting in the lobby, again in the blue suit with white shoes he's seen wearing around the island. As he's still trying to take it in, doctor Stevenson approaches him from behind and calls his name. He turns to respond to her, and when he turns back towards the chair, his father is gone. Jack is distracted and Erica asks if he's okay. He asks her for a script for Clinozepam, stating that he has a lot going on right now, including a heavy caseload and his new engagement. She reminds him an engagement is supposed to reduce stress, not create more, and suggests that he talk to somebody. He says he'll do that. When Jack gets home, he hears Kate talking on the phone. She says Jack's never home before eight and she can stay for at least an hour. She gets off the phone when she realizes Jack is home. He asks her who was on the phone and Kate tells him it was Noreen, another mom from the park. Jack says Kate has never mentioned her before. Kate waves it off and kisses him, then heads upstairs. Looking stressed, Jack gets out his prescription and washes two pills down with a bottle of beer. The next day, Kate comes home to find Jack drunk, sitting in the living room with empty bottles of wine and beer. He confronts her about where she was and why Veronica the Nanny was still at the house late in the day when Kate should have been home. Kate says she was out running errands. He presses her and she kneels by him, asking him to just trust her on this. Okay, first of all, how come when Jack doesn't come straight home after work and he was out running errands, it's no big deal. When Kate has to go out, where were you? Where were you? Why isn't Annie here?

Angry, Jack tells her that he's the one who's here for her and who saved her, not Sawyer, who made the choice to quote unquote stay while Jack came back. Kate becomes upset and says that she can't have Jack drunk and acting like this around her son. Jack yells at her that she isn't even related to him. Him just as Aaron toddles in crying, Kate picks up Aaron and looks at Jack as she turns and walks away.
