I was the recipient of a large sign. So for a merger? Actually a plane crash. Oceanic Airlines flight eight one five. One of the oceanic seats.
SPEAKER_00Wow, that's that's that's amazing. I remember reading all about it.
SPEAKER_01Take your shot, man. It appears you were right about the five.
SPEAKER_02Well, uh enjoy around and uh don't worry about the wager. Only the fun. No, you won. Allow me to pay. It's fine, thank you. I insist, Mr. Allen.
SPEAKER_04Hi, and welcome to this week's episode of Sass and Sips. On today's episode, we are gonna talk about season four, episode three, The Economist. I'm one of your hosts. I'm Lisa. And I'm Agnes. And welcome, welcome, welcome. What are you drinking today, Agnes?
SPEAKER_03Okay, I'm having my once again my morning coffee, the little oof. I mean, here is still the morning.
SPEAKER_04It it's all right, but also you're having it late because you forgot to brew.
SPEAKER_03I forgot to turn that bitch on. And it's Sunday. So even though it's 11:30 here on a but by being Sunday, it's more like 10:30, 9:30 because Sunday rolls differently.
SPEAKER_04Oh you get up later. Does the time feel differently on a Sunday?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because you get up later. Your day starts a little bit later. It's a lazy day.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you miss you miss what I was trying to do there.
SPEAKER_03The time space continuum?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. The time carries differently on a Sunday. You're giving me the finger, thank you.
SPEAKER_03Only because I love you.
SPEAKER_04I have a spiked coffee, also. I got some Kahlua in my coffee. After last episode, I was doing like the editing and I was thinking about some stuff. Like, you know, stuff popped into my head, and I was like, oh, I definitely want to like talk about this in the next episode. So I wrote it down so I won't forget.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_04Because no matter how many times I've brushed my teeth, I still don't remember what I wanted to ask you. I was gonna actually have to. Yes. So I thought about this. Obviously, we had a long hiatus between where we left off and lost and where we picked up and lost, just like they did. Yes. And so, but then I I realized that the first episode back was the beginning of the end, and I just thought it was fitting for us as well. And I was like, oh, that's so funny.
SPEAKER_03Oh, it was meant to be that way.
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm. And then I was thinking about the phrase innate fortune and how I how that was like the reference with the numbers on the helicopter. Right. And so, and so I googled the phrase, and this is what came up. Synonyms are natural luck, inherent luck, natural chance, natural destiny, inherent chance, natural wealth, natural richards, sorry, riches, not rich, natural hazard.
SPEAKER_03So I'm not gonna both can be the both can be true. Good fortune and a hazard at the same time. I find that so not coincidental.
SPEAKER_04So I want you to keep some of that in your back pocket because some of these are like on point.
SPEAKER_03I do have many questions about some things that you're gonna have to like make make them make sense for me as we go through the episode.
SPEAKER_04Okay, and then you asked if Locke was looking better.
SPEAKER_03Yes, it did.
SPEAKER_04I I don't think he's necessarily looking better. I just think maybe we just haven't watched in a while, but he's like not depressed, Locke, if that makes sense.
SPEAKER_03Right, there was something different about him, and I don't know what it was. I'm like, he just looks less less haggard, and you all know when you're depressed, you it shows. I'm like, there's something different about him. His personality changed, and when your personality changes, everything else changes. The physical changes, but yeah, he did look uh sorry.
SPEAKER_04Uh there's one more, but I I just second guessed myself, but hold on a second. Um, remember that I told you about the what do you call it? The an anagram uh is that when the letters are mixed up? Yes, okay. Remember, I told you about the anagram, Sawyer the Con Man, yes, right? Well, um, whatever. But it it it it wasn't Sawyer the Con Man. Um, I forgot it was like um something Seward, whatever. Um, but it it unscrambled to say Sawyer the con man, a poor dad, and I I alluded it to mean Locke's father, Sawyer, who was the original con man, and he's a poor dad. Right, but then I thought about it afterwards and I'm like, well, Sawyer is all like James Ford Sawyer, right, is also a con man, also goes by the name Sawyer, and he has a daughter. Wait, he has a daughter? Yes, remember Cassidy told him when he was in jail that he has a daughter. Who's Cassidy? Cassidy is the one that he pulled the cons on. That he he got her doing the cons with him. Oh, right, right, right. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And she was also the one who helped Kate see her mom. Okay, okay. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03Yes, I remember.
SPEAKER_04Right. And so then, and I like I kind of forgot that he had the daughter too, and then I was like, oh, but wait a minute. Like, I wonder if this could be referencing both of them.
SPEAKER_03Either or both, and it's kind of like there we he he became the he literally became the person, not just by name, he became this guy. Right.
SPEAKER_04Yep, so that was it. I mean, we don't really know much about his role as a father, right?
SPEAKER_03At least not yet. I feel like there will be more to come. Only because this is lost and they're gonna fuck with you no matter what.
SPEAKER_04Um, fair. Fair. As for this episode, I know I know you already gave some of your thoughts, but um are you ready to jump in?
SPEAKER_03Let's jump. I'm feeling kind of froggy. Let me stop. We're gonna jump on the train. I don't know how I'm gonna be jumping on and off because that's the way my brain works. Enjoy the ride.
SPEAKER_04Okay, on the island. Said is praying near the helicopter while Jack and Miles argue about what to do about Ben and Charlotte. Miles wants to retrieve them, but Jack is more cautious. Said goes to Naomi's body. He closes her eyes and covers her with the blanket. He finds a metal bracelet she wears and takes it off of her wrist and reads an inscription on it. N, I'll always be with you. RG. Meanwhile, Loc and his group are trekking through the jungle. Sawyer suggests torturing Ben to find out who is Ben's guy on the freighter. But Locke thinks it would be pointless. When they arrive at the place where Jacob's cabin used to be, Locke finds Ash on the ground that was there on his first visit, but there's no trace of the cabin. Hurley awkwardly expresses his disagreement over Locke's plan to keep Charlotte as a hostage, but Locke admonishes him and makes it clear that he is making the decisions. They head to the barracks. At the helicopter, Said offers to go and retrieve Charlotte from Locke. He believes that he can do it safely without violence, while Jack will only cause violence. He gets Frank to promise that if he brings Charlotte back, Frank will take Said to the freighter. Miles and Saeed prepare to go retrieve Charlotte. Jack suggests to Kate she should go with them because he doesn't trust Locke. And the three set off to the barracks. Said has Naomi's bracelet. This scene though was kind of funny because Miles is like he kind of reminds me of like a five-year-old, right? Yes. Because he's like, yeah, he's like, you're not planning to go without me, right? And Saeed was like, no, I wasn't. He's like, oh, okay. And then the the Jack and Kate exchange was I thought it had like a good amount of humor, but also allowing us to see that Jack is kind of growing as a person. Because Kate's like, how does it feel? And he's like, what? She's like, you know, to be told not to go. And he's like, so should I just he's she's like, you know, to be me and told not to go. And he's like, oh, so should should I just wait 20 minutes and do it anyway?
SPEAKER_03Pretty much.
SPEAKER_04But when he tells her that she should go, he says that, you know, it's like nothing will happen to you. Like you'll be safe. And when she says, like, how do you know? And he's like, because Sawyer won't let them. And I thought that that was very telling. Yeah, right. Like on his part. Like he's he's now become self-aware to admit this.
SPEAKER_03So that's time. Yeah. That he's something he's willing to do.
SPEAKER_04And can I just say, like, the way Sae takes charge, it's so fucking sexy. Like, he is just so authoritative, so calm. And he's just like, no, this is what we're doing, and that's it. Let's go. And it's like, yeah, man. Fuck yeah.
SPEAKER_03That is what okay. I gotta say, that is the type of man that I need in my life. I oh god. And I'm watching this, and every time I see every time it's a Said centric episode, I'm like, why? Because like I love I love Said. I mean, let's take away his past. Um but I and they're like, but why do you gotta look like my baby daddy? Why why we can't have it all. I mean, I mean, that being said, and the looks department, I got good taste in men. Uh Alien the looks department because it's just but yeah, so men pay attention, please.
SPEAKER_04Um a little bit. We don't okay. Maybe I should cut that out.
SPEAKER_03Maybe it's not it's not all about power per se. It's the confidence, right? The confidence that exudes because he's a little asshole about it.
SPEAKER_04No, it's but and that's what makes it sexy, right? He just has confidence and he knows what he's doing, and he just he just goes for it. And but he's like also respectful as at the same time. So it's it's just yeah, it's it's a really good combination. Daniel takes the opportunity to per did I say that right? Daniel takes the opportunity to perform an experiment. He sets up a tripod with a beacon and a clock on it, then asks Frank for his phone so he can call Regina. Frank hands it over on the condition that he hang up if Minkowski answers. Daniel agrees and phones the freighter getting Regina. He asks her to send a payload, which we will realize is a small rocket, to his beacon. Regina does so and begins counting down the arrival of the payload in rapid five kilometer steps, starting with forty. But when she reaches zero, the rocket has not arrived. Regina claims that's weird, while Daniel responds that it's far more weird sometime later. To Daniel's surprise, the rocket finally arrives. Daniel compares the time on the digital clock from the rocket with the one from the tripod and sees that they are different by 31 minutes and 18 seconds. Concerned, he says to himself, Oh no, this is not good. Said, Kate, and Miles reach the barracks and find it deserted. They sneak around the settlement and hear a muffled banging, which leads them to Hurley tied up in a closet. Hurley tells them that he was left behind by Locke. He says that he tried to talk Locke out of threatening Charlotte, and that Locke tied Hurley up in the closet. He says that he doesn't know where the rest of Locke's group went, but that they were going to stop at Ben's house before they left. Said Miles and Kate head to Ben's house and begin to search it. While Kate searches the bedroom, Saeed finds a hidden walk-in closet off the living room. In the closet are sets of nice clothing and several bureaus. Opening drawers, Saeed finds bundles of banknotes from different countries and several passports also from different nationalities, presumably all Ben's. The Swiss passport Said opens lists his name as Dean Moriarty.
SPEAKER_03Why are you laughing? As opposed to M Sherlock Holmes, Moriarty. Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_04In the bedroom, Kate is searching under Ben's bed when she sees a pair of feet enter the room. When she stands up, she sees Sawyer. He motions for her to be quiet, but Kate yells for Saeed. When Saeed runs out of the closet, he finds Locke pointing a gun at him. In the kitchen, Rousseau has a gun pointed at Miles. As the three of them are herded together, Hurley appears and apologizes for lying. That shocked me.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yeah. Yeah. Because I'm like, oh, it's part. I'm like, oh, it makes sense. The six. He ends up changing his mind and going with, and then I'm like, oh, okay, so it doesn't make sense anymore. Okay, fine.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I forgot that moment. Like, I was like, oh fuck. I forgot about that. Locke takes Saeed to the other's game room where Kate had been in prison before, and Saeed finds Ben already there. Meanwhile, Kate and Sawyer talk about why they decided to go with Jack and Locke respectively. When Kate explains that she went with Jack because she believes the freighter can get them off the island, Sawyer asks why she's so anxious to go back to prison and adds that he has nothing to go back to himself and implies that they can live a better life together in the barracks. Kate responds by asking how long they would be able to play house, and Sawyer responds, why don't we find out? Like so sexy, kind of like right? Like he's just like, Well, why don't we find out? Like, uh you're like, okay. Like, yes, sir. If you say so. Locke apologizes to Said for the ruse, saying that it was all to find whether or not the three of them were alone. Said indicates that he does not trust Miles and his people either, and suggests that he can find out more if he takes Charlotte and goes to the freighter. Locke says he won't turn over Charlotte for nothing, and Saeed hints at a deal. I thought it was funny when he goes into the room and Ben is like, oh, I owe Loc a dollar. Yeah. He's like, why? He's like, because I bet him a dollar you weren't gonna be stupid enough to fall for this.
SPEAKER_03But who would have thought from Hurley?
SPEAKER_04Like exactly.
SPEAKER_03He it was if it was anyone else, you're like, yeah, right, bullshit. But Hurley, I don't know. Right.
SPEAKER_04I've seen this show so many times and I've forgotten.
SPEAKER_03And it's still at the helicopter. So say you shouldn't feel bad.
SPEAKER_04Oh, no, no, not at all.
SPEAKER_03He shouldn't feel bad at all.
SPEAKER_04At the helicopter, Desmond has arrived back with Juliet. He confronts Frank about the picture Naomi had of him and Penelope. Frank refuses to answer. Desmond gets angry and demands that Frank take him to the freighter on the next flight. Frank agrees. As they finish talking, Said and Charlotte come over the hill. Kate and Miles are nowhere to be seen. When Jack asks what happened to Kate, Said tells him that she decided to stay with Locke. Said says that he traded Miles for Charlotte. Frank accuses him of being dishonest about their deal, but nonetheless agrees to take Saeed to the freighter because Miles was nothing but a pain in my ass anyway.
SPEAKER_03I think it was a little telling to me that he said he she decided to stay with Locke as opposed to saying she's decided to stay with Sawyer. I think he felt it would have been a little less painful, even though everyone knows who she decided to stay with. He was very tactful in that. Oh, is he a diplomat? He's like, No, a torturer. But uh, but he really was, he's he is very diplomatic. So it's funny that he asked if he was a diplomat, and then here he is being very diplomatic, and how he told Jack, like, yeah, no, homie, you didn't win this one.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, and then and then you think about it, right? And like Saeed's job before this was torturing people to get information, and yet he is one of the best communicators that they got on this island. So, you know, okay, whatever.
SPEAKER_03So I feel like that kind of and a good interrog an interrogator slash torturer in this in this particular, you kind of have to be able to be do it like you know what I mean? Like that skill only enhances his ability to be a torturer. I hate to say it like that because that's he's Said, he doesn't seem so evil.
SPEAKER_04Frank offers to take the third person, but both Charlotte and Daniel want to remain on the island for now. Actually, Charlotte says that she wants to remain, and then Daniel's like, uh, yeah, um, me too.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_04Smooth, Daniel, smooth. Said insists that they take Naomi's body. As Saeed and Desmond load Naomi onto the chopper, Daniel takes Frank aside and tells him that no matter what happens, they must fly on the exact same bearing they used to get to the island. Frank agrees to do as Daniel says and lifts off, piloting the chopper off the island. In the flash forwards, we see Saeed playing golf in the Seychelles. A man approaches on a golf cart and begins a conversation. Said seems reluctant to converse with him, saying that they have paid a premium for privacy at the club. The man asks Said what he does for a living. Said replies that he lives off of a substantial settlement he received from Oceanic Airlines, revealing that he is one of the Oceanic Six. On hearing this, the man becomes nervous, but they play out their shots for a $100 wager, which the man wins. When the man goes to leave, Said calls him by his name, Mr. Avellino, and shoots him dead. And Said walks off into the sunset, or rather, into the sprinklers.
SPEAKER_03Right. Okay. Am I surprised? Yes. Am I surprised? No. It's one of those things like this is probably the least surprising things I've seen on Lost Thus Far.
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm. Yeah, except now. Said claims to be one of the oceanic six.
SPEAKER_03Right, so we know it's a flash forward.
SPEAKER_04So we know it's a flash forward. And do you believe him?
SPEAKER_03And what sense? Leave.
SPEAKER_04Do you think that he's telling the truth about being one of the oceanic six? And now we know another one. So up to okay, up to this point, we've heard Hurley say he's one of the oceanic six. We've seen Jack and Kate off the island, which leads us to believe that they are three of the six. We've heard Kate reference a he. So we don't know if that could be Hurley, right? Or some other he. And now we have here.
SPEAKER_03Well, I don't think it'll be Hurley because the way she was like, I had to get back, he'll know I'm gone. I don't think she would care if Hurley knows she's gone or not. So it's someone else may or may not be Sawyer. Or it may not be any one of them, it may be not, it may not be anybody. Right. That we know, you know. So do you think that so okay?
SPEAKER_04We know that Hurley is one of the oceanic six, as he said, and now Saeed says it. So do we just take that as fact?
SPEAKER_03No. Okay, because this place this this show has fucked me over more times than any man has.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03She's like, well, yeah, I can't argue with that.
SPEAKER_04So before you said, I don't have my list in front of me, it's in the other room. But you said it was Kate, Hurley, Jack, Kate, Son, Hurley, so I think Sun, Jen, and Sawyer. I think those were the six that you said.
SPEAKER_03I think so. I don't remember. That sounds wrong. So you think those are still the six? I don't know anymore. I'm not giving any more opinions because I feel like they just I feel like the show hears my opinion and then just changes it on me.
SPEAKER_04Okay. But let's just say that Said is telling the truth, and we have confirmed Hurley and Said.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_04We know that Jack and Kate for sure got off the island. So if they're part of the Oceanic Six, who are the other two? Because now there's no room for Sawyer, Son, and Jen. Only two of them. What do you think? And give me a guess.
SPEAKER_03Oh I I Let's keep it with Said and Jen. Let's just keep it with those two. I don't know. I yeah.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_04At some other time, Said walks into a swank cafe in Berlin, Germany, during the winter. The only empty seat is at a table where a blonde woman is working on her laptop. Said asks her for directions to Potsdammer Platz. And forgive me if I butchered that, but I do not speak German.
SPEAKER_03You don't.
SPEAKER_04She gives them to him in a North American English. No. She gives them to him in North American English and introduces herself as Elsa. When Said asks her what she does, she tells him that she works as a personal assistant for an economist. She carries a pager which he uses to alert her when he's in Germany and needs her services, which is only a few times a year. She asks Said what he does, and he tells her that he's a corporate headhunter and will only be in town for one week. She remarks that Saeed seems familiar to her somehow. He offers to take her to dinner that night and tell her. He's like, I'll tell you where I know you from at dinner. Like, oh, you're so smooth, buddy. So smooth.
SPEAKER_03I am dumbfounded. Like on TV, we see a lot of like, oh, random stranger, here's my number. Pick me up for dinner. Like people you met like 30 seconds ago. Does that happen in real life? Because I can't reconcile.
SPEAKER_04Like, I know. Well, in fairness, right? She took his map and she circled the restaurant and she was like, okay, well, meet me here at eight o'clock if you can find it. Which I thought was it's funny and cute. And she didn't ever like really give him any personal information. So all things considered, like, it's the same thing you can probably do with a complete and utter stranger.
SPEAKER_03But we s although everything makes sense as the episode goes along, but like you see the TV a lot, though. Like, hey, complete stranger, let's take I'll take you home with me. Hello, complete stranger. Let's like it. People do that, and I get I think they do. And I'm like, This is why they ended up on dateline. I watch law, like I grew up on Law and Order, okay? All right, and we just don't do that kind of stuff, but then again, we're from New York City, and yeah. But I feel like watching let's say watching sex in the city. How many one night stands do these people have? Nothing so my thing is isn't about the one night stance per se. More power to you. It's the bringing home a stranger, and yet you might become an alive part that bugs me the fuck out.
SPEAKER_04Yes. So I I had a friend that I worked with. This was years ago, and it was fleet week, and she was like, Oh, I'm gonna go to the bars and you know meet some handsome sailors, and we're like fucking with her, and we're like, okay, and she was going out with friends or whatever. She met a sailor that she liked, and he was traveling with his buddy, and they really hit it off, and so she invited him back to her apartment that night. She lives alone, and he was like, Oh, but like my my friend, like we're staying together or whatever, and she was like, Yeah, it's okay, like he could come too. He could just like sleep on the couch. Everything went fine, right? Like, she ended up like hooking up with the guy, they had a nice evening, like it was all consensual and fine. And the friend, the other sailor, the friend, was respectful. He stayed in the living room, whatever. But I'm like, the next day when she told me, I was like, Are you out of your fucking mind? Like, not only do you bring one stranger home, but two, two, and you are tiny, you live alone. What the fuck were you thinking? And she's like, Yeah, but he was so bova- I'm like, Oh my god, no, like, I don't know how people do this shit.
SPEAKER_03I don't get it either, and people, and I like the whole everything like the whole like on a live part of robbed, rape, whatever is like the exception. No, it's not, it's not the exception, it's the I don't know the norm. It's likely impossible and probable, right?
SPEAKER_04Like, and it and it's I mean, yes, right, it's more likely that as a woman you're more vulner vulnerable if you bring a strange man home. But I feel like even men bringing home strange women is looking for trouble because like you don't know this person, you don't this is a stranger, just bringing any stranger home into your I or going to a stranger's house.
SPEAKER_03This yeah, I boggles my mind. Yep.
SPEAKER_04Anyhow, we'll learn later that they're not exactly strangers, but for now Right. After they leave the c after he leaving the cafe, Saeed calls someone on a cell phone saying that he's made contact, and then he throws the phone in the trash. On their fifth date, Saeed and Elsa get ready to leave her place to go to the opera. They seem affectionate, and Elsa impulsively decides to leave her pager at home, saying that she'd rather just spend the evening with Saeed and doesn't care if her boss calls that night. Said offers to carry the pager for her at and saying that he wouldn't want her to be fired on his account. When Elsa asks why he's still in Berlin, presumably it's been longer than a week, Saeed tells her that his job is taking longer than expected, and she wistfully tells him that she wishes that she was the reason he was staying. How did you like seeing Saeed with the straight hair?
SPEAKER_03It was uh I like the straight hair in a ponytail, like when he was doing the golfing.
SPEAKER_04Okay, yeah, I like that. But it's um I like him better with his curls. I like him better both ways.
SPEAKER_03I like I liked him, I like him with the tux. I liked him when he was shot with the shirt on.
SPEAKER_04It's like lingerie.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. Tux well-fitted suit, then gray sweatpants, then yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh okay, let's focus. No more Saeed and a Tux. Okay. Said in a tux with the curly hair. Okay, no, no, no, I gotta focus. Later that evening, Saeed and Elsa lie in bed after sex. Elsa tells Said that she's growing tired of not knowing anything about his job or background. She loves him and they shouldn't have secrets. Saeed agrees and says he will tell her everything. Just then her pager goes off. She scrambles to dress and go to her boss. Said asks where she's going and she tells him the name of a hotel. Saeed tells her that she must leave Berlin and that people will be asking questions about what happened to her boss. At this point, Elsa realizes that their meeting was not about her, but a way for Saeed to get to her boss and asks whether he is going to kill him. Said says he is not an economist. Upset, she retreats into the bathroom. Still on the bed, Saeed tries to talk to her, but she turns around with the gun in her hand and shoots him. As Saeed lies bleeding on the bed, Elsa, who's still in the bathroom, calls someone and reports that she hasn't killed Said and that now he will not tell her the name of his employer. As she talks, Saeed grabs something and throws it against the mirror near the bathroom door, which she was using to watch Said. When she rushes out of the bathroom, he lunges for his gun and shoots him. Unlike her, he's shot to kill. He struggles over to her body and weeps. As he holds her, he notices a bracelet similar to Naomi's bracelet. Later, Saeed stumbles into a dimly lit Bet's office. He proceeds into the surgery where a voice tells him to take off his jacket. Saeed sits down and the person begins treating the wound and questioning him about what Else's objective had been. Saeed tells him that she had been trying to find out his and his employer's identity. Then we find out who his employer is, and it's none other than our Benjamin Linus. That was like you didn't see that coming. Um I'm surprised. Honestly, I'm surprised that at least because you're really good at this stuff.
SPEAKER_03So I at first I'm like, I didn't pay any attention to who like his employer was. And then when he gets to the vet's office, he goes, take your shirt off, you know, to you know, for the top. I'm like, and I'm like, that sounds like Ben. And like, so when they show up the show, I'm like, okay, yeah, that's Ben. I see it. What I'm surprised is, I'm not surprised it was Ben. I'm surprised that Said is working with Ben. Okay. Right? I'm like, okay, I'm like, I'm not surprised. Yeah, I'm like, some some some shit has to go down. He must have some really good info, but Saeed to be like, I don't want to say switch teams per se, but at least be like, okay, fine, I'll work with you.
SPEAKER_04Right. Especially when there was a comment made about when they were captive together on the island, and Said says the day I start trusting you is the day I sell I sold my soul. And then we see at the end of the episode Saeed is working for Ben. Right. And we're like, what the fuck? He's he sold his soul. So Ben is working on his shoulder, and Saeed brokenly expresses remorse for having killed Elsa. Ben tells him, These people don't deserve our sympathies. And then he asks if Saeed remembers what they did the last time you followed your heart instead of your gun. Because he says, like, he says something like, Are you crying because you fell in love with her or are you crying because it hurts? Ben reminds him that the work they are doing is to protect Saeed's friends. He says that he has another target for Saeed's list, and Saeed says they know he's coming. To which Ben replies, good. We've got like a whole lot more shit, but it's like kind of contained, right? Because it's all about like Saeed is off the island, he's working for Ben. He's refer the the title of the episode is called The Economist, and it refers to this quote unquote economist the whole time, but we never find out who he is or why Saeed and Ben are after him. So like there's like that bigger mystery. We can guess, but we don't know for sure who Saeed's friends are that he's protecting, or why.
SPEAKER_03With I'm guessing, I get the initial guess is the the rest of the people on the island or not on the island. The people his friends he met since the crash landing. And that's yeah.
SPEAKER_04And also, what what do these people want with them?
SPEAKER_03I still go back to the whole this whole shit. This whole shit show was an experiment, whether they meant for them to get um crash, I think they or whatever the case may be. The whole thing is an experiment of some kind of something. I don't know. I joke about the space tank continuum, I but I think it may be something weird. Oh fuck, I was pushed off the train now. I forgot where I was going with this. Damn it. Um yeah, yeah, I'll come back on to it. I hope. Oh, I do have something for the trivia that had me. I'm just like a little confused that it did it. I'm confused that it when he was brought pennies bow, Desmond, Desmond, right. So he came back, he's questioning, and he was like, Did they say that she paid for your, you know, this is she funded this ex this thing for you guys, and he was like, Well, let's I don't know the big P, you know, you know, they're still questioning whether she was the if it was her boat or not, uh-huh, right? But I thought it wasn't her boat. I thought she was confused. I'm like, so is it her boat? Was it not her boat? What the hell's going on? Because if yeah, if the message was it wasn't Penny's boat, why are they still asking if it's her boat? Right, and that's what leaves me so fucking confused. Is that intentional or did I miss something?
SPEAKER_04You didn't miss anything.
SPEAKER_03They're fucking with me intentionally, gotcha. Okay, so is it her boat? Is it her boat? Just tell me, come on, just whisper it. I won't tell nobody.
unknownNo, okay.
SPEAKER_04Fine, but but Desmond is still wondering why they're looking for him because clearly they're looking for him. And if not Penny, then who? So we know that they're looking for Desmond and they're looking for Ben. And but what could, you know, like what could be it, what could be the connection between the two of them, if any, and why?
SPEAKER_03And then refresh my memory. Didn't he have some kind of like I forget how he knew about Charlie's death. Was it like a dream? Did he go back and forth in time? Like, what was it again? Yeah, I forgot.
SPEAKER_04Desmond had the premonitions about Charlie's death, and so he he predicted Charlie's death in the looking glass station before it happened, but he was also down there when Charlie died. Um Mikhail had the grenade at the window, right? And so Charlie closed the door, and as it was filling up with water, he he wrote on his hand not Penny's boat, so that Desmond could see it, and and then he basically drowned, and Desmond.
SPEAKER_03So he didn't, so he he's not really had so the question is, and doesn't think he know him, but didn't know him in England or something? I feel like Yeah, their their paths crossed, but they didn't know each other.
SPEAKER_04Um Charlie was performing on the corner.
SPEAKER_03Okay, and they okay yeah. So and then so here's a question. So was it was it uh did he predict Charlie's death or did he remember Charlie's death? Back to my as you know, mmm, so okay, I'm glad you got that.
SPEAKER_04So okay, look at you, you're like okay, I'll okay. Um I think we might have to turn the cameras off. Am I hitting on something? Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_03I'm not I'm not telling you your action already did.
unknownI'm not telling.
SPEAKER_04Anyhow, back to trivia. This is the first flash forward episode in which Jack does not have a flash forward. Thank God when Daniel does his experiment, the timers are off by approximately 31 minutes and 18 seconds, which is 31 and a third minutes.
SPEAKER_03Is that one of the oceanic numbers, like the lost numbers?
SPEAKER_04No, not at all. Elsa, who is Saeed's target, has several similarities with another woman in his life, Shannon. She is also tall and fair with light blonde hair. Oh, that rhymes. And she dies from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. And both women die shortly after sleeping with Said. Among Ben's foreign banknotes is an original E series 20 I don't is it Euro or pound? No, I'm not sure how it works. But like $20 note issued by the Bank of England. Withdrawn in 2001. The design incorporates the face of Michael Faraday. I didn't notice that. Me either. But thankfully, uh Lost Wiki did.
SPEAKER_03Thank you, Lost Wiki.
SPEAKER_04The New Zealand passport shown briefly from the drawer is a diplomatic passport. Cause standard issue New Zealand passports are blue and the one shown was red. The one that Saeed picked up to inspect was from Switzerland. The date of birth on the passport is March 3, 1962, and was issued on April 2, 2003. This would make Ben this would make the identity that Ben assumes 42 years of age. Said is confirmed as the third member of the Oceanic Six. However, the third? Exactly.
SPEAKER_03Oh shit.
SPEAKER_04So we've got Hurley and we've got Saeed, but which one of Jack or Kate?
SPEAKER_03Okay, so that goes back to my whole, like there was two, there were multiple drop-offs. Maybe one was known and one wasn't. Okay. Or maybe the six was something that was so maybe the first six that came in as opposed to the rest of the.
SPEAKER_04Okay. I'm just gonna say that that's what's written here in the document. And I'm not gonna tell you if that's the truth or a lie. I'm gonna leave you guessing.
SPEAKER_03Like, oh, it was like a typo, a sub an episode You gave me the finger again.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_04If pilot part one and pilot part two are considered to be a single episode, then this is the first time that the third episode of a season has not been lock-centric. It's always locked in the third season in the third episode.
SPEAKER_03Interesting. Never noticed that. Once again, I think this is just one of those things the writers like, this is what they think. Let's just go with it, fine. Like, I don't know if it's I was just like, I'm gonna give you I guess that is just it's just so much nuance. Yeah, and I don't, and I find it hard to believe that all of it was intentional. Like, I think a lot of it was after the fact. They're like, oh yeah, that worked, let's just go with it. Yeah, that's what happened. Or it's like it doesn't even make sense to approve or deny it. It is what it is. It just it's just too much. Too much.
SPEAKER_04This next one is a little bit spoiler-ish. This is the last episode in which Desmond is on the island for a while. That he's on the island, actually on the island, or he's just not this is no episodes with him on the island in which Desmond is on the island until, and I'm not telling you what episode, it's just it's it'll be a while.
SPEAKER_03Oh, wait, oh he actually got off the island though. He got he was on the on the helicopter. Because I okay.
SPEAKER_04We see Ben's secret room in his house, and he's got like it's like so James Bond. Right, right, because it's like suits and passports and money, and it just looks so different than the rest of the way the cabin is. When Said is playing golf at the Seychelles, Said wore a white glove, and Mr. Avellino wore a black glove. So there's the play, the light against dark play.
SPEAKER_03Okay, all right, but every time I think about the whole light against dark thing, okay, so you're gonna say the white gloves, light, whatever. But if you watch or follow any of the G.I. Joe cartoons or movies, it's so random. Okay, it is I can't remember the names. Oh my god. Snake Eyes and the other, like they're reversed. The enemies, like the G.I. Joe, the good one is wearing black. Yeah, and the in the the black, the I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_04I can't think of it, but yeah.
SPEAKER_03He wears white, so it's funny how it it's actually reversed. Is it Hydra? Wait a minute. Um Hydra, isn't that Marvel?
SPEAKER_04Um oh yeah, that's Marvel. Cobra.
SPEAKER_03Cobra, duh. Hello, Cobra Snake Eyes. Yes, so I can't remember the character right now because my brain is shutting down little by little. It's we're gonna Google this. So everyone's gonna be uh little there's storm shadow and snake eyes. And why can't I remember who's who? Um, but yes, the one that's in Cobra wears white, and the one that's on the G.I. Joe team wears black. Um, and then you see the movie, like like the Snake Eye and Storm Shadow's origin, and you see how that happened. But yes, so there's the reversal of the white and black, light and dark, good and evil. Right. Yin and yang. Inside every good is evil, and inside every evil is good. That's wow, definitely true. Falling into the fucking rabbit hole. Let me like pull myself out. Okay, I'm sick.
SPEAKER_04Some cultural references. G.I. Joe is not listed here, but it should be on the road, Sayyid finds a passport of Ben's with the alias Dean Moriarty, a central character in this novel by Jack Kerouac, who also wrote Dharma Bums. Sherlock Holmes, which you called Moriarty, is also the name of Sherlock Holmes, arch nemesis, often considered literature's first supervillain.
SPEAKER_03The writers and the showrunners were on some good shit. That's all I have to say.
SPEAKER_04You know what would be so cool, but like honestly, ain't nobody got time for it, is if we could do like bonus episodes with like the Alice in Wonderland references or the Sherlock Holmes references or like book club type thing, but we could have a whole series just like we have it.
SPEAKER_03I know, like I said, it'd do much. It would take up so much time. Well, we will have to quit our jobs, you will have to get a nanny for your kids.
SPEAKER_04It and yeah, and and we would need more of you guys to be like buy us a coffee, subscribe because in a way we could afford this.
SPEAKER_03Hashtag pay my rent because I have quit my jobs this podcast.
SPEAKER_04I know, and like legit, if we started doing all the cultural references and things like that, like even down to the books that we see people holding and reading on the show, never mind just the ones that kind of like this, right? We're pick and choose characters. We could do this for like another three years.
SPEAKER_03Easy. Okay, that just you can you just saying that just wore me out. Exactly. You're gonna make me quit again, Lisa.
SPEAKER_04I know baseball reference. I told you I love Lapidas. Jack asked him if the Red Sox really won the series. And Lapidas is like, don't get me started on that. And I feel you, I feel you. He's like, My dad is from the Bronx, we bleed Yankee Blue. Yes, I fucking bleed Yankee Blue too. Let's go Yankees, even though they're fucking shit this year. Let's go Yankees.
SPEAKER_03It just had like every so often when um we have like random days where Fridays usually, yeah, we can wear like um support our team. And it sometimes it's baseball, some obviously right now it's football. And yes, when it was baseball, I wore my Yankees t-shirt. And yesterday, no, today's Friday was you know, Packers, Green and Gold, and I don't have any giant clothing.
SPEAKER_04Um, I always had my giant shirt on today, too.
SPEAKER_03See, that would have been funny, and I was like, yeah, no, I didn't wear anything because I didn't want to get jacked up up in here, because you know, don't you New Yorker?
SPEAKER_04Well, what's funny is when I was getting dressed, and by dressed, I mean finding a tank top to put on because it's actually still kind of nice out. I was rummaging through my clothes. Um, because I was I was gonna go outside and do yard work and stuff like after this. So I'm like, I'm not gonna put on it.
SPEAKER_03She said it was. I just want you guys to hear that. She hasn't decided if it's yeah.
SPEAKER_04And so I was just looking for like, you know, what are my tank tops like my house tank tops? And the first one I grabbed was the Yankees one. And then I started moving other stuff over because I was looking for like a better bra, like a more comfortable bra, and I didn't find it. And then I was like, oh, but wait, maybe I should wear a t-shirt because I don't know if it's hot enough for a tank top. And that's when I picked up the Yankee, the Giants t-shirt, and then I was like, let me just check the temperature, and I was like, Yeah, it'll be in the 70s, and I'll be outside sweating. So I grabbed a tank top, and when the first one I grabbed after all the shuffle is the one that I'm wearing. So I'm neither wearing Yankees nor Giants. Or that's they have a tank top with a pineapple on it. Another one is castaway. The main character in this movie is stranded on an island in the South Pacific after a plane crash. He pays he places a clock in a payload to see how long it takes to arrive at a specified destination. According to the Genesis of Lost featurette on the season one DVD, the original idea, which was later developed into Lost, was first pitched to ABC Chairman at the time as a cast as castaway the series, and then it developed into Crazy Mystery Island with rabbit holes and put Agnes in a padded room. I have a question.
SPEAKER_03So does that mean I took it as there's the 30 minutes or whatever lost time, not that it took right? That's how I took it as it's 30 minutes difference in time. Right, not necessarily it didn't take 30 minutes for that thing to get there, it's just like 30 minutes difference, space difference. Okay, cool. That's how I took it out. Lost time, gain time, parallel. It took them 30 minutes to travel parallel universe. Okay, got it.
SPEAKER_04Space time continuing. Back to the future. The scene when Daniel holds the tool meeting the axis. The scene when Daniel holds the two digital clocks side by side is reminiscent of the first film in the Back to the Future trilogy when Doc Brown performs his experiment with his dog Einstein. The dog is sent to the future, and one minute later, Doc is seen on screen comparing side by side a stopwatch that time traveled and one stayed put.
SPEAKER_03So we are time traveling. It is a time space-time continuum. I'm not completely crazy. Or does it make me crazy because I'm actually following the craziness?
SPEAKER_04It's one of those. Said tells Elsa he's a headhunter, meaning a corporate recruiter. Recruiter? No. Said tells Elsa he is a headhunter, meaning a corporate recruiter. Well, he kills people for Ben, so he's literally a headhunter.
SPEAKER_03Headhunter. I actually chuckled at that because we had obviously seen him shoot the guy before that scene. I'm like, hee hee, headhunter.
SPEAKER_04The delay between the freighter and the island is 31 minutes. Elsa was paged by her boss half an hour early. Could those two items related?
SPEAKER_03So the boss is or the freighter? No, stop. Um the freighter is in the middle of the space-time continuum.
SPEAKER_04Is it the freighter or is it the island?
SPEAKER_03Okay, wherever the boss is at, or whatever the island is at, someone sits between the parallel universes and thus the 30-minute off. Okay. Whether it's 30 minutes fast or 30 minutes slow.
SPEAKER_04Boss was on the island, and that was the delay, but okay.
SPEAKER_03But then she says oh, right, right, right, right, right. He's on the island. Because it doesn't necessarily mean that he's in Germany. Because remember, she was it was a it was all she was playing Saeed too. Um, so yeah, the boss is Ben is on the island and he's paging her. No, no, Ben is actually on the bed's office. Okay, right, okay. So let me see. Let's see, let's see. Who is Penny's father? Okay, or whoever it is. Um, it might be Penny herself. Who fucking knows? But yeah, they're on the island. Who's on the island that is somebody we haven't missed?
SPEAKER_04But we don't know how far ahead this is, right? We just know that it's ahead. We don't know who's there.
SPEAKER_03I mean, it's I think it's more than five minutes in the future, you know what I mean? Um, they actually have a they have a list of names, they have a game plan, they have it organized, they have like obviously safe houses or places to go to get his, you know, so it's more than I think it's not immediately uh post island.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_03Um not trying to figure. Can you hear my cat snoring?
SPEAKER_04I I hear his um his jingle.
SPEAKER_03Okay, that's Gizmo's jingle, but Cyrus next to me snoring. He stores very loud. He's woking me up times.
SPEAKER_04When Kate asks Sawyer why he wants to stay on the island, he said that there's nothing waiting for him out there. Kate had asked him why he wanted to leave in born to run, to which he answered, There ain't anything on this island worth staying for. But both times, don't you feel like it's kind of hinted at Kate?
SPEAKER_03Absolutely.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_03He's in love.
SPEAKER_04But he sawyer, so yeah, I think he truly at that moment sees the potential between him and Kate. My final thoughts that I'm going to ask you. We see the two similar bracelets, right? One on Naomi and one on Elsa. Do you have any ideas of what RG could stand for?
SPEAKER_03None at all. Okay.
SPEAKER_04And do you have any ideas who the economist could be?
SPEAKER_03Absolutely not. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Do you want to at least take a guess?
SPEAKER_03I said before it might be Penny's father or Penny or Penny herself. Um, yeah, I don't know. Oh, it's probably someone we don't even we haven't even met yet.
SPEAKER_04I mean, it could be. But why would you even guess Penny's father? Like, how does he even fit into all this and why?
SPEAKER_03Because the company that she works for is originally his. So that's why I kept saying his. And like I want to say Penny is not like necessarily evil or playing, I don't want to say she's not playing games. I don't want to say she's intentionally playing games with people's lives, and I really think she's honestly looking for her love, Desmond. Maybe possibly. So I'm just throwing her father in there because he seems to be one, he's a puppeteer, he's like a little puppet master. Didn't we see him at the beginning at one point in the Yeah, we've we've seen him, and I feel like that I don't know.
SPEAKER_04It was the whole remember the whole thing with the scotch, like Desmond wanted to like impress him or whatever. Yes, that's what it is. Like, oh, but you're not good enough for the scotch, right?
SPEAKER_03So I feel like he was brought, like, no one gets brought in for no reason. Like, we we like for example, we met Locke's father, and we just thought it was just to give him his his like his backstory, but as we can see, Locke's father had an integral part in different aspects of this shit. Um, and the and if anyone can bring all these people onto the island that's obviously fucking connected, is Penny's father.
SPEAKER_04Okay, you don't think that we would have seen more of him then if he was like that? I don't know, I'm just asking. I don't know with lost.
unknownI don't know.
SPEAKER_03All right, I don't know. Like, listen, they had like a whole year off the writer's strike to figure out what they wanted to do, and just okay, so um, I feel like this all right.
SPEAKER_04Um, that's fair. The next do you have anything else for this episode? Absolutely fucking not. Okay, I didn't think so. The next episode is Eggtown, where all the characters will be be giving us their best scrambled egg and omelet recipes. But the episode is called Egg Town.
SPEAKER_05Wait, what?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything at the moment. All over the computer, all over the laptop. It would have been ruined, it would have been the end of our podcast.
SPEAKER_04Oh, but that's it for this one. Next time, Egg Town.
SPEAKER_03Maybe we should omelet now.
SPEAKER_04I know. Maybe we should like have to eat eggs that day or something.
SPEAKER_03I want oh my god, I want breakfast.
SPEAKER_04I want a ham and cheese omelet now. I don't even have any eggs in my house.
SPEAKER_03Like, I want to go out for breakfast. Like, I want someone to like, hey, you want breakfast? Yeah, let's go. Like, I want that.
SPEAKER_04Anyhow, that'll do it for this episode. While you wait for the next episode, you can visit Sassinsips.com where we link on over to all of our socials. You can also find ways to support this podcast financially or otherwise. Buy me a coffee, PayPal, subscription, Patreon, all the ways. And if you choose not to support us financially, it's cool. We still love you. But can you give us like five stars? Because, yeah, that helps. Also, tell a friend, post our link, send us a message. We'll gladly like send you shit if you want it. So, like, send it, let us know. We got you. Drink responsibly, do not drink and drive. I'm sure you guys are tired of telling me of me telling you this, uh, as I slur my own words.
SPEAKER_03But you're not driving, so it's a okay.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_03You're driving me crazy.
SPEAKER_04I have to do is somehow manage to put dinner on the table later and maybe pull some weeds in my backyard. So we're good.
SPEAKER_03Good luck.
SPEAKER_04I think the manual labor will wash out the alcohol. Yeah. Uh, because I'll be drinking water then. And until next time, I'm Lisa.
SPEAKER_03And I'm Agnes.
SPEAKER_04And we are out of here.
SPEAKER_03Peace. Are we ready to talk about this episode? For some reason, this episode for me was kind of like meh. It was okay as far as watching it. I felt good watching it, but I okay, so really wasn't meh. I think it was meh as far as content to talk about for the podcast. I liked it because it wasn't all convoluted and oh my god, it was just a good episode just to watch and not have to have my brain go down the rabbit hole and want to commit and like rip my head out. So okay. It's funny, the episodes I enjoy are really bad for the podcast. Because it's not much crazy content.
