Hi and welcome to Sassin Sips. Today we are talking about Reunion. Season 1, Episode 12, 1997. I am Lisa, and I am sipping on, as usual, my red wine.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I forgot who I was again. I it happens. And I'm Agnes, and I'm just keeping it classy and just drinking plain old coffee today.
SPEAKER_01Do you have hot takes?
SPEAKER_02We were right. Or I was right, or we were right, or it was we were right about that was gonna be my hot take.
SPEAKER_01I was right.
SPEAKER_02The litter giver. Because that brought that came up like 600 episodes ago. So yeah, other than that, no. I do have just a little reminder, just a little update of information. Um episode one, two, whatever, and we talked about like how did they plan on ending the season or what was the plan? The initial plan was 22 episodes for season one.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02They were actually going to finish the whole Who Done It in one season.
SPEAKER_01I wonder how that would have played out.
SPEAKER_02I know.
SPEAKER_01Like you know, after. Right.
SPEAKER_02I'm thinking they would have found a new mystery. Someone else is gonna die.
SPEAKER_01Like, oh, you don't do you watch Only Murders in the Building? I missed I'm I haven't watched this season yet. Okay, but so probably something like that, right? Like, okay, well, we'll just kill somebody. Kill someone else. Sorry. We'll just kill someone else, well. Sounds like a plan. 1997. That was a big year for us. It was a we graduated high school in 1997.
unknownShh.
SPEAKER_02Don't tell anyone. Yes.
SPEAKER_011997. And this okay, so two things. Number one, this is in many ways the penultimate episode. Because the the next one is gonna be the last one. And can you hear her? She needs to get a teeth guard. I didn't know dogs could grind their teeth until I had my dog. But the other thing I was gonna say is that even though these episodes didn't air in its intended form, they did actually air because when I looked them up on IMDb, it has an air date. And you can kind of tell that the YouTube videos were recorded from TV. Okay. So it didn't air, I guess, on aired like Yeah, like on some it probably aired on some cable channel. Okay.
SPEAKER_02After the fact that no one knew that it even aired probably.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so probably somebody who happened to be either searching for it or just channel surfing and came across it. But a lot of people probably didn't even realize it. Do you have any other hot takes though?
SPEAKER_02No, I was kind of just excited at the fact that we got something right.
SPEAKER_01Now I'm even more bummed though.
SPEAKER_02You weren't so bummed at the beginning, but like as we're getting to the end, you're like, you guys suck ass.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I would have been even happier if we still had gotten like one or two more episodes even after this.
SPEAKER_02No, you would have been even more bummed because you would have had more questions.
SPEAKER_01It would have been that much closer and not like I'm so close and yet so far away. Yeah, you're probably right. The episode opens on the present in 1997, and the detective is still hell-bent on arresting Craig. I don't know who the lady was. Um if they said I don't remember, but he's he's facing resistance, and she says that he needs a credible suspect by the end of the week. His lieutenant. Okay. And um or like they they're gonna take the case away from him. Meanwhile, at church, Will is receiving the letter. Well, his letter, and it says, I can keep a secret for the right donation. Back in '97, Congressman Brewster wants Will and Catherine to see their house in DC. But Catherine seems to have doubts about Will and the wedding and all that. We see Aaron getting ready to give the kids to Pascal for the weekend. The chemo is I like how in the beginning of these episodes, like I feel like I'm starting to get the feel for it. So the beginning is kind of like a quick recap of where everybody is at this year. Mm-hmm. But it's but it's weird in the translation to audio how it just seems so like jump, jump, jump, jump, jump. But in the episode, when you watch it makes more sense. Chemo is not working for Peter, so they're like, maybe a bone marrow transplant is the answer. Peter's like, don't worry, it'll be fine. And we're like, no, it won't, Peter. Okay. The way you said that, like, no, with a smile, no, it won't. It won't. Aaron misses his kids. He's talking to Jenna, who's living there. She's doing off-Broadway, and it's hookup time. It's like, we knew that was gonna happen.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's not like they haven't done it before.
SPEAKER_01No. And on one hand, I'm like, okay, maybe you guys can be happy together. You've done some growing up. You know, maybe you're in a different headspace. But on the other hand, I'm kind of like, damn, Aaron, if you just hold out a little, Peter's gonna drop dead. Like you can have Carla. Who's everybody?
SPEAKER_02Very, very morbid.
SPEAKER_01But that's what's gonna happen. Like, I'm not saying I'm happy about it. I'm just saying, you know he wants Carla. If only he know he knew that he just has to wait a little longer. It's 1997. At most, what, seven years? Eight? I mean, we don't know when he died, we just know in 2006 he's dead. Fine, I'll stop being realistic. Will and Catherine finally set a date for the wedding. And then Pascal comes to drop off the kids and a bombshell. She wants full custody. We see Carla fighting with the insurance company. The sleaze ball gives her his home number so that he can quote help. Basically, they denied the claim. And if she's willing to sleep with him, he might help her. And at this point, I'm like, oh Carla, you would so be Team Luigi right now. Sam and Carla are talking about parenting, and Sam thinks it's too late to tell Will for his and Craig's sake. Meanwhile, Pascal is suing for custody, and she plans to move back to France. Jenna opens the door thinking she's about to find Aggrolls, and instead she finds a lawsuit, and it's a subpoena from Pascal's lawyer. In the present day, Craig, Aaron, and Will are comparing letters, maps, amounts. They all received a second letter. And I'm not, I guess I know we missed um like a few parts, but I feel like we didn't miss this part. And so they each it seems as though they each got another letter. So like Wills was saying I can keep a secret for the right amount or for the right donation. One of them got one with the map saying where to leave the money and this one. That was the big and then the other one got a letter with the amount, which was 100,000.
SPEAKER_02Aaron got that one.
SPEAKER_01Aaron wants to pay the hundred thousand, but it doesn't seem like Will wants to. Why doesn't anyone ever listen to Will?
SPEAKER_02You would think after 11 years that we've been watching them, that Will is kind of smart. He's a little annoying, but he's he has not been wrong if they just listen to him. His personal life is a different story.
SPEAKER_01But back in 97, Carla is so desperate that she's about to ask Aaron for the money for Peter. But he's like, Listen, I write you a check right now, but my assets are frozen. Jenna has to testify. They put her on the spot. Like, are you sleeping with Aaron? And the lawyer is furious because she's like, I thought you said you weren't. And he's like, Well, we weren't, but now we are. You know, life happens. And she's like, Well, I need to know because I'll tell you what's important, and blah, blah, blah. And now I need the dirt so that I can drag Pascal. The six are at the loft, they're brainstorming about the Aaron Pascal situation, and Jenna slips. Now, while I'm not advocating for them to continue the lie, so Jenna says something to Sam because Sam is not necessarily sticking up for Pascal, but she is saying, like, she's not on her side, but she's saying, She's giving another point of view. Right. She's like, I just don't think I don't agree that she's a bad mom. That's all. So Jenna says something to the effect of, well, you out of everyone should understand what it's like. And they're all like, wait, why? What does she be? Now, honestly, why couldn't you have just played it off and said, because she's the only one here with a kid?
SPEAKER_02It could have been played off a lot smarter than what it is. I know. And then they're all just what? Who? Huh? But then of course you couldn't have the revelation if they played it off. You know, they were smart about it, kind of ruins the whole Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Sitcoms just would not exist without stupidity and lack of communication. But okay. So Craig is like, no, no, no, it's okay. Because they're like, no, no, wait, what? And no, no, no, it's okay, it's okay. And Jenna's like, no, it's not okay. Like, shut the fuck up. But Craig tells Will about said baby.
SPEAKER_02Said baby.
SPEAKER_01The baby. And Sam is. I mean, I don't even remember. Was Sam out of there before she he says or after? But either way, Sam is like, fuck this. She said, screw you guys. I'm going out. She had her apartment moment.
SPEAKER_02What was she what else was she going to do at that point?
SPEAKER_01But to like I know, stay and face the music?
SPEAKER_02The consequences of her action. She was gonna do it anyway, but at that moment she had to sit there with six foot five other people and face it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So Will catches up to her and wants to know if Amy is his.
SPEAKER_02Duh. No, it's not. It's another guy named Will.
SPEAKER_01It's just, you know, all those babies that I had in London, you know, at the time when you got me pregnant, you know. No, can't be yours. And he says, he tells her that he like something like he wonders if his life would have been better if he had never met her.
SPEAKER_02I was like, that must hurt. That's actually kind of cold. Yeah. Because listen, I get the sentiment behind it. But dude, you made your own decisions every step of the way. Who, him? He did. Like I couldn't stand him being angry at I wish I never met you, but you chose to sleep with her 12 years ago. You know what I mean? Everything that you regret, you you could have just said no or yes to something. You could have made you said turning left, you could have turned right. So it takes two people to get yourself in that position.
SPEAKER_01I I'm only half with you. Okay. In this situation, I'm Team Will. And I'm I'll tell you why. He was always in love with her. Better, worse, indifferent when they had their little entanglement. That's the thing now. Yeah. Yeah. So fine. They both said yes. They both got together. Now Salmon's a pregnant and it's his. Now, although the whole social aspect, you know, I won't get on my soapbox about how it takes two, but the woman is always the one who bears the burden. We're gonna remove that part. However, I can't blame him for being angry because regardless of whether you believe that the decision falls on the woman, even though the consequences always fall on the woman, she lied to him. I concur. And that's that's the part where it stems. Now he we know that he's always been in love with her. And she's always played with him like a fucking yo-yo. And I feel like he has finally come to a place in his life where he is putting that past him. He's had closure, he's resolved, he's feeling better about himself, he's moving on, whatever the case is. And now a bombshell that 10 years later you find out that you have a kid, and not just that you have a kid, but that this kid was in your life. You've played with this kid, you've known this kid, and all the while the secret was kept from you, even though she managed to stay in this kid's life. You didn't get to be a part of that.
SPEAKER_02So I see your point. I'm thinking more broad strokes. You're thinking you're focusing on just the kid. When he says, I wish I never met you, I'm taking it as every decision, anything that went bad, had to do with that. You didn't have to sleep with her. You didn't have to go to jail for Craig because you felt guilty. You could have told Craig that you slept with her. Like there's there was ample opportunities these last 10, 12, 11 years that you could have been like, he could have turned left, but he went right. With good, bad, or indifferent, and yes, it still stemmed from his relationship with her. Yes. But he still had his role. Decisions he made. So like I said, I do understand the sentiment. Like, God damn it, you are the bane of my existence. I get it. But don't put a gun to your head to make every decision that you made.
SPEAKER_01No, I agree. I agree. I just feel like his overwhelming feelings for her. I could understand the sentiment. I wish I never met you, because I think that he feels as though not knowing her would have saved him so much heartache. Just because like he's loved her and he probably feels as though she has taken advantage of that. I mean, how would you feel if you have someone who you loved, you wanted to be with, they gave you a chance, it didn't work out, whatever. No, you know, things don't always work out. But then you stayed in their lives because they kept you close. They almost made you feel like there was a chance. They show up at your house one night and kiss you because they're sorry, they love you, but then they run. And then you know, so I just feel like I get it because he probably feels as though she's played him all along.
SPEAKER_02I concur. Like I said, I don't think it's an either-or situation. I think it's both. It's a both, yeah, he's right in his sentiment. And also, yes.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, he definitely didn't have to love her. He I mean, I mean, I mean, no, he didn't love it.
SPEAKER_02Right. But it was like, I sometimes it comes to the point where you have to love yourself more than you love another person who's not giving you what you need. Yeah. And yes, you cannot wish they were like I said, he's not wrong. It's not a it's not an either or, it's a both.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So Carla is at the church begging God to help Peter and to forgive her for what she's about to do. Meanwhile, Aaron is testifying, and his lawyer questions paternity, and I'm like, woo-hoo, finally.
SPEAKER_02I thought about you at that scene.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I was like, my God, it took it took so long for you to even bring that up. So whether or not, whether or not you have the best relationship or not, I am saying that if your ex wants child support from you and full custody, I don't think it's that big of a leap to question paternity. Especially when like it's one thing if you're living with those kids and you're seeing them every day and you're bringing them up and you're just like, these are my kids. Like this, this is my family. But to have those kids taken away, go not just okay, we're moving, you know, across town, across the state, you're not even moving across the country. You're moving across the fucking planet. You're moving across the ocean to another country. I'm not offended that they questioned paternity, especially when it wasn't like right. It wasn't like they were together though together, physically together. Yes, they were with the second when they were married, whatever. But the first so yeah, like I don't know why everybody was shocked. I was like, finally, Sam gets back home and Craig has been enlightened. He has finally, finally put that last piece of the puzzle together.
SPEAKER_02He actually knew. He just didn't want to believe it. Come on, come on.
SPEAKER_01I think you're right. I think you're right.
SPEAKER_02But he's like, if I don't have to think about it, then we don't have to deal with it.
SPEAKER_01But also, if that is true, why couldn't he just keep pretending? Because we'll never said, wait, that's my baby. I mean, I don't know. So he says he wants her out. Not only does he want her out, he pushes her and then he leaves. And I was like, Craig, you're an asshole. I get it.
SPEAKER_02I mean, but like the the biggest part of it though was the here I do, but the biggest part of it, I mean, maybe his friend, maybe that's the maybe that is the biggest part of it, never mind. But not knowing who the baby daddy is is probably a huge thing, but you know, you knew about the baby already. So you kind of saw her in in your heart of hearts, you knew it was Wills. You knew it.
SPEAKER_01I know, and you were on a break. You weren't you were on a break. I mean, considering that they placed uh, you know, you guys, you keep using scenes from friends. Can you not hear Ross yelling somewhere down the block? We were on a break! But like now I I while I can understand why Craig is all butthurt about it.
SPEAKER_02But the whole I want you out thing, because it I think it was I think it was a little bit over dramatic. It was excessive. It was excessive.
SPEAKER_01You knew that was like Because this girl has had your back for all these years.
SPEAKER_02And when you actually cheated on her while you were actually together and married. Thank you. You had a big deal. As opposed to being 17-year-old kids. Even if they were on a break, even if they were in the break. You were 17-year-old, you were children. Like, yeah, no.
SPEAKER_01Right. Not only that, but like she didn't keep the kid. She didn't keep the relationship with you.
SPEAKER_02Try to pass it off as yours. Like, she didn't do any of that stuff.
SPEAKER_01I mean, maybe she wasn't completely honest about it, then, but she obviously wanted the future with you and not with you.
SPEAKER_02I think she did pretty damn good with her decision making. I know adults that can't do that.
SPEAKER_01So now we're back with Pascal and Aaron. And oh now Pascal is hurt. Now, because the tables are turned. She is having her FO moment, okay? Because she wanted to fuck around. She is Like these fucking Republican voters, okay? It's cool. We're gonna drag you through the mud. We don't care how much it hurts. Oh, wait a minute. You wanna do it to me? Hold on, hold on. I have to draw the line there. Your suffering is fine, mine is not. And I said what I fucking said. She didn't bother to think ahead. She was like, okay, it's cool. You could drag Aaron. You could pull out all his fucking dirty laundry. You can do anything that you need to do so that I quote win. But when Aaron turns it around and fights the same fight that you're that you brought to the table, now you're you're you're crying about it. The only good thing that came out of that whole thing is that she's like, fine, I'll drop the case. Because you can't even handle the whole bullshit. Don't start the fight if you're not gonna fight. Anyway, Carla is about to do the sleeves, and Aaron calls in the nick of time. Because Pascal has agreed to drop the case, everything he has has been unfrozen, so he can now help her. Is like, I am out of here. Will ends up telling Catherine about Amy, and then Craig comes in to fuck up his life once again. That was so fucked up. Of course it was. Craig is a petty little bitch who just can't everything is fine when he's doing well, but when he has a setback, he has to burn everyone down with him. Like he can't bear, he is such a petty little bitch, he can't bear to see Will have anything good, especially if it affects him. Like, Will, you need better friends. He comes in and he's tells Catherine about because the whole thing was she was hesitant to set a date because we know that her father wasn't crazy about Will. When he was dying and Craig was with him, he had asked Craig for his opinion, and Craig was like, you know, you'd be lucky to have Will in your family. So Will asks Craig. Not, I mean, I guess he asked him, but he was like, Oh, I think, like, I think she's the one who needs to hear that, like, not me. So I don't know how you want to phrase it.
SPEAKER_02Sam said that.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02Sam told her he's he's because um when they talked about the marriage, um, Catherine walked away and he's like, Craig is like, Well, what's going on? He's like, Yeah, she's a little hesitant, she getting her father's approval of me, you know, blah, blah, blah. He's like, What are you talking about? He loved you, he respected you, it's fine. And then that's when Sam told Craig, well, I think she needs to hear that.
SPEAKER_01Okay. So at this point, Craig comes in and was like, Oh yeah, and all that stuff that I said about him, blah, blah, blah, because that's what made her change her mind about setting the date. He's like, Yeah, I lied. I lied. And we know that we know that now he's lying, he's lying now, not about then. But, you know, fuck you, right? Fuck you, Will.
SPEAKER_02I think Catherine's relationship, her dependency on her father was a little weird. Like me and my mother, we were very close. But still, she was her dependent, like her uh need for approval and dependency, like emotional dependency on her father was a little bit, a little bit much. Not crazy much, not like weird much, but just a tad bit like. Okay. So that happened.
SPEAKER_01I I'm a little torn. Like, on one hand, it's sweet. It's kind of like, yeah, I get it. Like you want it, you you wanted your father's blessing. This is the person that you're gonna spend the rest of your life with, and your father is adamantly against it, it's kind of like, ugh, you know. I don't know if it's worse that he's dead or better, though. Because if this person is good to you and this person cares about you, and the only thing missing from being happy with this person is that guy's approval. Well, then maybe now that he's dead, you don't have to worry about him scowling at Thanksgiving. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02That's what I was like, it's a little bit over the top. Like the whole, like sometimes I know the writers had to throw something in there to throw the monkey wrench in. Some of the some of their monkey wrenches aren't really believable. They have a history of this, of not being, you're like, really? That's what you used? Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I think probably because they have to advance the story so quickly that no matter how I suppose. What? That's what you okay. That's what you picked? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like this, I'm pretty sure they could have been, but I get the whole quickness, but I'm sure there was better stone like a better storyline or something.
SPEAKER_01In the present, we see Aaron, Will, and a duffel bag full of cash. And it's like the garbage can with the red lid, and these are not like Ocean's 14 are not calling you, okay? Like whatever number they're up to. I don't know. But George Clooney is not calling you guys. You guys are terrible. In '97, Aaron breaks the news to Chloe that they are gonna get to live with him. And at this point, we are reminded that children are savages and they give no fucks about your feelings. And they're like, yeah, we want to live with mom.
SPEAKER_02And I love the fact. She's like, but it's because she's mom. She's mommy. And I was like, and the funny thing is, as they're going through, like before she even said that, my head, I'm like, oh, it's just that she's mom. Like, I want my I'm something years old. And and I've been like, I want my I don't feel good. I'm like, I want my mommy. But I can't, I'm like, I just want my mom.
SPEAKER_01It's it's one of the purest things, like they they just are expressing themselves.
SPEAKER_02It's sweet. I think I mean the outcome of that was a beautiful outcome. Yeah. And that should have happened that way to begin with, as far as they should have just asked the kids. They should just talk to the kids. They should have talked what she should have talked to him before even suing for custody. Like, you know, it conversations should have been had to begin with. She didn't have to go all, I want full custody. It could have been, hey, let's talk. And if it didn't work out that way, then you go balls to the walls.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. And I feel like, as far as we know, Aaron, he seems like a pretty decent, reasonable person.
SPEAKER_02I mean, yeah, there would have, there would have been a moment of, yeah, yeah, yeah. But at the end, I think it it would have ended up this way anyway. Or, you know, as far as being Yeah, whatever's right for the kids. It would have it would have been amicable, is what I'm trying to say.
SPEAKER_01So we go back to the trial, and at this point, that's when Pascal acknowledges and announces that she's choosing not to proceed. And at this point, you're like, cool, Aaron's the winner. And then Aaron is like, you know what? I see her not proceeding, and I raise her, I'm not proceeding either. She can have them.
SPEAKER_02I see her, I'm not proceeding, and I raise her, she can have them. That's funny. I want to see your bat and raise it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Let's go back poker.
SPEAKER_01So, but he says, you know, like he just wants to honor his kids' wishes that they are with their mom. So whatever. At this point, Will and Sam are at a park, and she apologizes. Will wants to know where Amy is, and Sam wants to know if Catherine knows. And he's like, Nope. She broke off the engagement. Sam says she has no idea where Amy is. Will seem skeptical. He's like, I hear you, but I don't believe you. That's what his eyes are saying.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. His eyes are telling a whole different story.
SPEAKER_01And he says, I never want to see you again.
SPEAKER_02Peace, Biatch. Yep.
SPEAKER_01I'm kind of glad that at least we have 1998 because we both know that he is not going to keep that. Oh.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01But at least we'll have at least a little bit of confirmation before we never hear another thing about these people. In the present, Will, who is a priest, is in his confessional, and someone comes in to give a confession, and woo-hoo-hoo, who is it? None other than the detective.
SPEAKER_02Detective.
SPEAKER_01And the detective is wondering what would happen if a group of friends covering up a murder were willing to pay. And I was like, yes, I fucking knew it. And he leaves the duffel bag filled with cash and walks out of the church. And I'm like, ugh. Alright. The episode ends there though.
SPEAKER_02It was a good ending.
SPEAKER_01It was a good ending. It was. But I wonder how they're gonna spin that part of it.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Dun dun dun. One more. And then you know you're gonna have to tell me what we're watching next because I'm gonna need to know what to watch. You mean you forgot again? Like every other You didn't tell me. You said I did tell you. You said I told you we had this exact conversation.
SPEAKER_02I was driving home and I told you the neighbor.
SPEAKER_01You're like, oh well, you did tell me. No, but when we were recording and I asked you, and you were like, you forgot again. And I was like, I guess so. But then you never told me.
SPEAKER_02You mean did I rem You mean did I tell did I rem did I tell you the sixth time after? No, I did not tell you the sixth time.
SPEAKER_01Can you text me so that maybe I can see it in writing? Since the words keep falling out of my head.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna take that personal.
SPEAKER_01Why?
SPEAKER_02Alright.
SPEAKER_01Why are you taking that personal? Uh-oh, you're texting me.
SPEAKER_02You told me to text you the answer. Oh. Ten seconds, Lisa. Ten seconds.
SPEAKER_00You know what I was about to say?
SPEAKER_02What?
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, you did tell me.
SPEAKER_02Keep this. Don't edit this out. Keep this in. This stays in so everyone hears that you you don't listen to me.
SPEAKER_01I do listen to you. You just it just I just forget that I listen to you. Sorry. Please don't hurt me. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_02And her face, she looks at her phone and her face falls. Because the reality, she's like, oh shit, I did know this.
