Hi, and welcome to this episode of Sassin's Sips. I'm one of your hosts, and Lisa.
SPEAKER_05I'm Brittany.
SPEAKER_00And today we are talking about six feet under episode 12 of Private Life. What are you drinking today?
SPEAKER_05I am doing a duel. I have my water, of course. And I have the shittiest, cheapest wine that I could find at the Tritors by Me That Sells. And I just looked at the name of it, forgot what it's called, but I know it was like Is it like two buck chuck? No, it's like I forgot if it has like the Triters logo on it, but it's like a name, like a first and last name. And it was literally $4.49.
SPEAKER_00Is that the wine that I had when I went to your house?
SPEAKER_05I think we had the big bottle of sangria and it was in a plastic bottle. I think that's what we had. It was like an oversized, like plastic, like almost like a water bottle material.
SPEAKER_00No, it was great though.
SPEAKER_05It was good. Yeah, I I get that all the time when I'm going like to my parents or to a friend's house, or when I know I have people coming over. The big bottle of sangria works.
SPEAKER_00That's actually what I'm drinking, sangria, but not Trader Joe's. It's my own.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I'm uh cheers.
SPEAKER_03Cheers.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah, it's been as as we talked, it's it's been a minute, but uh we're here now, and I don't know. You want to get into it?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. I'm honestly I'm so ready to get into it. Like school year's over, ready to have fun and ready to record this episode.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, me too. The the episode was it was strange. I'm just so happy we got here. I okay, so truth be told, I feel like you hyped up this episode a little bit for me, and then I felt kind of like, oh my god, what's gonna happen the whole time? And then afterwards I was a little, I don't want to say let down, but but kind of let down.
SPEAKER_05It was like when I was re-watching it, it was a roller coaster for me. But I I think now I've watched the episode about five or six times because every time we go to record, we just don't, or and that's mostly my fault. So now that I've watched it way too many times, now I'm just like, oh, it doesn't matter, it's it's not that big of a deal.
SPEAKER_00No, I just I guess I was just waiting for like that big moment, and then I thought that that moment came, yeah, and then it didn't, and I was just like, Oh, he's alive. Oh, okay, what else? Yeah, and and that was it. So I think it was just my interpretation, and like I don't know, maybe I'm so like desensitized by all the stuff that's on TV now, 20 years after the show came out, that it's yeah, it's my own hang up.
SPEAKER_05I was gonna say, like, I feel like this is why this was on HBO and like they were able to do scenes like this and stuff because it wasn't on just regular television. But honestly, like I don't I don't know what an order was on at that time. Why do I say weird law and order was on at that time, so they were doing weird stuff, but like I don't I never watched Law and Order, so I don't know if it was like gory stuff. Um no, not really, or borderline, like you know. I mean, okay, next question. Um the show The Wire, isn't that on HBO?
SPEAKER_00I think it was HBO.
SPEAKER_05I watched it also a long time ago.
SPEAKER_00I don't remember all the ins and outs of it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, I mean, like, I think we were just talking about this recently. Um, Jeff and I watched season one together, and then we started season two, and it just got so gory that and too realistic that I was like, no, I can't do this. But I think it was filmed around the same time, like possibly like 2001 to 3-ish.
SPEAKER_00We could look it up. Let's look at it.
SPEAKER_05If I don't look it up. 2002. Okay, yeah, so it it was almost like the same time, they were off by like a year, because this episode came out August 2001. That we're talking about today. But I don't know, because I was gonna say if the wire was on just like regular cable television, that would be wild. But I think it's also an HBO show. Yeah, I'm not yeah, because that was that was a lot. Like, I remember talking about like the the neck cutting in season two that I just couldn't like sit through. I covered my eyes and didn't watch it anymore. And Jeff was like, no, season one was so much worse when they laid that guy out on the car all bloody and stuff.
SPEAKER_00And I'm like, uh, spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen it, yeah.
SPEAKER_05But like it wasn't there's so many guys that you have no clue who I'm talking about, but yeah, I believe it was HBO, yeah, it was because I was gonna say, like, I I mean, I feel like there's some stuff on cable. Well, I I feel so old saying cable, but like there's some stuff on cable that like is fucked up and weird, so like American Horror Story. Well, yeah, but I don't know if American Horror Story would be able to air, like I don't know, like 25 years ago.
SPEAKER_00Well, the first season did come out, I mean, like 10 years ago-ish.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but that's when like TV laws were changing for the better, or at least allowing more things on I don't know. I honestly I'm just talking out of my ass.
SPEAKER_00So I heard, and I don't I don't know if this is true, but I feel like this is true, that detective Bunk from The Wire, because you know the show is set in Baltimore and all that. Yeah. Uh I heard that he was modeled after an actual cop. And one of the cops that he was modeled after was actually one of the detectives or the the cops in in the whole Adnan Sayed case. Oh, stop. Wait, hold on.
SPEAKER_05I'm trying it's been now like half of a year since I've watched The Wire. So I'm trying to remember who's detective bunk.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I don't know if it was because he was a black cop or a white cop. I don't I don't know if it had to do with like how accurate the actor portrayal was. Like I don't I have no idea, but I feel like I heard this more than once that one of the cops uh was the inspiration for his for for that character.
SPEAKER_05Well, that's wild, right? Yeah, I mean, like it it definitely matches up with the timeline, right? Because the show was probably was in development for like two years before it came out, maybe even more. So yeah, shit. I mean, like not not ew, like gross, but like ew, like spooky. Like, I don't it's just it's weird how like interest that we've shared and like events that we're aware of. Well, it makes sense, right?
SPEAKER_00I mean, if if you're gonna make a show about detectives in Baltimore, then a lot of actors wanna um what's the word? Like model their character. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like do their own research. And so how how unlikely would it be for any of these actors or whatever to walk into a police station and say, hey, with your permission, you know, can I talk to you? Can I, you know, can you offer any tips, tricks, blah, blah, blah? So it's not, you know, it's not that far-fetched. I think the part that's so crazy is that it's a cop that then became part of like this whole big story, but like for the wrong reason, so to speak. So I think that's like the crazy part. But yeah.
SPEAKER_05But anyway. Staying a cop though, um, we actually do get to see our favorite police officer from the show in this episode.
SPEAKER_00Yes, he is back.
SPEAKER_05And did we say the episode name yet?
SPEAKER_00It's yeah, a private life.
SPEAKER_05Yes, I don't know where I am.
SPEAKER_00I know where you are, I can see you.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, right. Uh, this episode is called A Private Life. It is episode 12 of season one. We have one more episode left to season one. And like I said, this was originally aired in August of 2001. Now, for this episode, Lisa and I were discussing the fact that we know our characters now. We know what they like, we know what they don't like, we know how they interact with each other. And so it's at this point in the season, and honestly, the show. Um at this point, like the writers knew that it was being renewed for another season, and the show ended up going on for a number of seasons. We're actually seeing more character development at this point.
SPEAKER_00No, go ahead, sorry.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I was gonna say, we actually decided to take our description of like what happened in each episode in a different direction now, and we'll go like super, super brief over like all the major events of the episode, but then we're gonna go into like just specifically talking about each of the major characters in this episode and and how they're changing or or what they went through and how it equates to or leads them to like their ultimate goal.
SPEAKER_00No, all I was gonna say is when you said how that we pretty much know the characters, and and while I mostly agree, I was a little bit surprised by one of them. One of them really actually surprised me this episode and not in a good way.
SPEAKER_03And not in a good way, not in a good way. Was it Rico?
SPEAKER_00It was Rico. I was like, what the fuck is the matter with you, Rico?
SPEAKER_03Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. But anyway, yeah, and we'll get into um how we thought Rico would act and how we thought other characters would act in response to the major events of this episode. So, with that, Lisa, do you want to start off by telling us like exactly how this episode started, and then we'll just go over like what happened first, next, then and last.
SPEAKER_00So that the episode opens, and you see two guys using the ATM, and they're cuddly and and you know, whatever. You could you could tell they're in a relationship. As they're using the ATM, these other guys pull up and basically proceed to yell slurs at them and beat them. One of the guys gets away, and the other guy is unfortunately not so lucky. The ironic part is like the one guy, the one fucking homophobic asshole is like calling them perverts and and telling them, like, don't you read a Bible? As he like literally proceeds to beat him to death.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he said, read a fucking Bible. But isn't that like then I was thinking limited knowledge of like religion and stuff like that? Isn't it not great to use like slur words when talking about holy text?
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, I guess. But then then again, I was like, oh my god, that's so fucking hypocritical. And then I was like, wait a minute, there's a lot of fucking violence and violence in the Bible, so oh yeah, that's true. I don't know. What am I what do I know?
SPEAKER_05But like they say it's all interpretation.
SPEAKER_00I know, but like whatever. I mean it it was just it was it was just really heartbreaking. Like these two guys just went from being happy and and playful, and just you can see that it was like just a blossoming thing to one being dead and the other one. I mean, I don't even know what happened to the other one, but the other guy, but um the the kid's name was Marcus Foster Jr. And his nine hi his um dates were 1978 to 2001. So he was 22 years old, 23 years old ish, 22, 23. I mean yeah, so that already sets the tone for the episode, and you can already tell it's gonna be heavy because not only because it's dealing with something that's very heavy, like just being killed because you're gay, but also then when you throw in the David aspect of it all, you already know that it's gonna be compounded. So after the title card, we open at Fisher and Sons. And um what is her name? What's Rico's wife's name? Is it Vanessa? Yes, okay, so that Rico and Vanessa are there with their baby, Augusto, and they're you know, oh oh look at the baby, look at the baby. Everybody loves the baby. Okay, then David walks in and he's all he's all uncomfortable, and he's like, Oh, you want to hold him? He's like, No, Mr. Pearl Mutter is naked. I'm paraphrasing, of course, but and then Henrico's like, when you gonna grow up and make her a grandmommy? And he's like, after I dress Mr. Pearl Mutter. And like I know I know that in in in my cultures that that's like such a such a common thing, like, oh, when you're gonna have kids, when you're gonna have kids, when you're gonna have when you're gonna get married, oh you have girls, when are you gonna have a boy? Oh, you have boys when are you and it's not pleasant. And I hate it. It's it's it's so annoying. Anyway, uh my youngest is nine years old. I still have people asking me if uh if I'm gonna try for the boy.
SPEAKER_05You could try all you want, but yeah, it's not happening. Factory is officially closed, but it's anyway, and so it's like we already start with Rico being very awkward and kind of insensitive, which just kind of rules like the whole vibe of this whole episode, like rude and sensitive, yeah, and like not first of all, gay, straight, whatever, not everybody wants kids, and that's okay too, except that if that's your answer, then that's not okay because then people have something else to say about it, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Like, oh no, I don't want kids. Why? Why don't you want kids?
SPEAKER_05Maybe I don't want to fucking tell you why I don't want to have kids, but anyway, so but Rico's putting that expectation of what Ruth wants on the the boys, and they just kind of excuse me, they just kind of look at each other and it's just quiet, like you said.
SPEAKER_00So after that scene, oh wait, but Ruth and Ruth makes a comment how David as a baby never made a peep, but Nate was always gassy. And I was like, yeah, still.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, still David is not making a peep about anything. What a surprise. And it's just kind of funny because towards the end of the episode, when Ruth and David were having that conversation with each other, Ruth says something like, it was so much easier when you were younger. You said just tell me what's wrong. Which kind of like goes against what well, I mean, she was talking when he was like an infant in the beginning, but it's just it's just silly how she was saying, like, oh, he was always so quiet, and then like he would talk to me, but it's like that's the whole it's the whole like um like arching theme of this episode is the fact that the like the relationship between David and Ruth.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05That's what everything pretty much gets around. Like, that's like one story arc in this episode, and the other one is definitely like the Billy arc, which we will get into. But speaking of which, um, so we actually get into Billy in this episode too. Like we were talking about, um, there's something going on with David. David is overcoming something through, or overcoming like how he's gonna tell everybody, or if he's gonna tell everybody.
SPEAKER_00Well, I think I I think that part of that is not yet, but it it becomes amplified after he talks to the guy's parents.
SPEAKER_05And even after he talks to the guy and like those flashbacks, or not those flashbacks, those like hallucinations almost that he has the whole season so far.
SPEAKER_00Because when when the parents of Marcus come to the funeral home, they talk about what happened, and if I remember correctly, they never actually say he's gay, but they allude to it. It's kind of like like a bad word, you know.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, his mother even says to his father that you can't even say it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then and and let's be honest, right? Had he been out of the closet, there's nothing his parents could have done, unfortunately. It's it's not like him being in the closet caused it, you know, it it was caused by two assholes. But I think that that also makes David a little bit more self-aware about how he is with his own family, and then when he's looking at the the body, um Rico makes a comment men don't make passes at girls with big big gashes, and it's so insensitive, and I think that you already see in David that he's not comfortable, and and I think as the audience, we're also supposed to feel uncomfortable.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and I feel as though David already knows that he needs to do this for himself, he needs to prepare the body by himself for himself, and he actually tells Rico, like, just take the day, go with the baby, blah blah blah. Like, I got this, I could do it. And Rico starts like backseat driving, and he's like, Yeah, but the cheeks need like reconstruction, like they need like new tissue or something like that. And David's like, I got it, it's fine, just go, I got it. And so David's now only working on Mark. Yeah, yes, I'm sorry, I just want to double check on his name. So David's only working on Mark now for this whole episode.
SPEAKER_00I mean, his his name is Marcus, but I I'm I'm thinking that they call him Mark for short.
SPEAKER_05They do, and that's why that's why I was double checking on the name because they they just call him Mark throughout the whole episode, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then what what else I notice is that in the other episodes, when he's talking to the deceased, doesn't he see them as they were in life? Yes, but this guy he sees him as he is in death, yeah. And so that's his gashes and bruises that's definitely different from the rest. Yeah. And it's as we go through the episode and and he's having his conversations, I feel like these conversations are some of the most raw and honest that Davis had basically with himself. Because it seems like usually he's trying to justify himself to the deceased, to the deceased, and this time it's like I don't know, not not that this like I don't know if I'm saying it right, but but the deceased almost I don't know, because I like I know like other others have kind of berated him for being gay or you know, quote unquote. But this time it's almost like He's sticking up for himself and simultaneously putting himself down. Yeah. But it was much more personal this time.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it was it was definitely like he had a little devil and a little angel on his shoulder, and both them were yelling in his ears. And you could still tell that, like through the dialogue that David was having with um like his hallucination of Mark, that he doesn't know if he fully accepts himself or if he's rejecting himself still. He doesn't really have a stance on like who he is or or how he perceives himself.
SPEAKER_00No, and it was so much more intimate. You know, like this this kid is saying how so what if he likes guys, but it was a test, and now we bring religion back into it. It was a test. I could have had a family, I could have denied that, you know, like I could I could have been a good person, basically. As as if being gay is to choose to be bad.
SPEAKER_05It's horrible that that was the mindset, right?
SPEAKER_00And and uh as we know, I mean it's Mark's voice, but it's David's words. Yeah, you know, and and then David is being the one who's very grounded, and he's like, it's not a choice, you know, it's not a choice, and I think that that was part of the overall arc of David coming to terms with it and with himself and with his family. Maybe maybe he had to go through that, you know, kind of beat himself up about it first. I don't know. But I don't know. The the the bottom line is that you know the the deceased is just saying all these hateful things about being gay, and David is the one who's countering them, you know, which is which is really good for him, you know.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, um along with like the mental turmoil that David's going through right now, he ends up driving by the crime scene, and he sees like people standing over holding like a vigil where like they found Mark's body and or where Mark was killed or murdered, really. And um he actually locks eyes with the guy. I don't know if you remember who that guy is. I don't know if you picked up on it. It's it's Eddie.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I know who who it is afterwards after reading some stuff about the episode.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I didn't realize in the moment that that was Eddie who's dating Keith.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I didn't catch it at first either.
SPEAKER_05Who's our favorite cop?
SPEAKER_00I know.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, I I just thought that was so wild.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um David tells him, you know, about all the people who are there, you know, to show love. And the and Mark replies, but not as many as hate me and you. And David, you know, it's like David's just still beating himself up about it. Yeah. David also has a confrontation with Rico. After David is done with the body, Rico makes a comment that is the best that David's ever done. And Rico shakes his head at the quote unquote homo well-wishers that are gathered outside the home. And David very calmly, and honestly, I found a new level of respect for David because David kept his cool, and David was like, you know, Rico, I'm a homo. And I expected Rico to just kind of apologize and say, like, sorry, I didn't mean to offend you, or just something.
SPEAKER_05But what he said was the complete opposite of what at first I thought he would say too. What did you think? I I thought he was gonna say like something about oh David, like, like, are you saying this because of like what happened? I'm so sorry, like that, at least because they're tight. I mean, like, we were even or even like no, you're not you joking, like or yeah, no, but like, or making a joke, or just like brushing it off and not getting into it. But no, like I mean, like, look, look at everything they've done for Rico so far, and we're only 12 episodes in. And Rico's reaction to this was just like, don't talk to me about that shit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. And and his demeanor changed, his whole body language changed.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it was almost as if he was like trying to shake bugs off of himself. He was like, ugh.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. And then he's like, Oh, where I come from, if men need to do that, they don't they don't leave their wife and kids, um because they're still they're still men.
SPEAKER_05And David's like, I am a man, which was wild, but like I have sex with men. Yeah, no, no, no, like uh it was so wild that David engaged in like that aggressive like interaction, right? Right, that he he actually went back and defended himself over this. That was huge for David, and honestly, I know that Nate knows, and I know that um that Claire knows, but like, is this the first person that he officially came out to in that way by saying I am gay? Yes.
SPEAKER_00Because Claire found out, uh, and she told Nate and and no, Claire found out um when her and Keith were looking for the foot. Yes, you're right, and Nate found out because he happened upon them at brunch or whatever.
SPEAKER_05Yes, I was gonna say it had something to do with the restaurant. Yeah, Keith were at the restaurant and they got up, and yeah, but he's never told anyone up until this point.
SPEAKER_00So Rico is the first person that he said it aloud to, and it makes you wonder did he say it because he was feeling defensive? Did he say it because he thought it was a safe place?
SPEAKER_05Or was he saying it's practice?
SPEAKER_00Or you know, technically he is Rico's boss, right? But but Rico, like I was so team Rico up until that point, and I was like, yo, what the fuck? Mm-hmm. I don't know. I don't know. I mean, I don't know.
SPEAKER_05I really think that to be honest, he's like the gravedigger of the week to react in that way. He's one of the two gravediggers of the week.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_05And so even at the funeral, like it not with Rico specifically, but like the whole like like homophobia situation got so much worse at the actual funeral. Horrible. It was so bad that like the scene was silent. Well, they put his images, they put Keith, another cop put Keith there, like his officer, not his officer, his lieutenant or something. Yeah, yeah, like his boss pretty much, right?
SPEAKER_00For like crowd control because of the protesters, and Keith calls him out on it, and he's like, Dude, like, is it because I'm gay? And the cop basically acknowledges it and is like, Well, yeah, but you care. And Keith just kind of I guess has to like accept it. I mean But he's there and uh David sees him, and one of the guys is yelling, and David fucking punches him.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, punches him in the stomach and then goes back and punches him in the face.
SPEAKER_00And that I'm sorry, like I don't necessarily condone violence, but that was fucking great.
SPEAKER_05It really was.
SPEAKER_00It was great because David needed that. And and the guy also needed to shut the fuck up, but whatever.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and honestly, the best part of all that, besides seeing that asshole get punched twice, was the fact that he was like the guy who like got hit was yelling, like, he needs to be arrested, and Keith like pulled the guy, so that's why like his mouth was in the guy's ear and was like, This is a funeral.
SPEAKER_00And like, okay, listen, if you if if you don't like gay people, I can't change your mind. That's that's your defect. However, that guy like if you if you don't like someone just because they're gay, that's a defect. Fight me. But that guy was like, oh, he got killed, and I'm here to celebrate. And that's why he deserved to get punched. Yeah, that's why.
SPEAKER_05So it's just so like, oh my god, it's so horrible. Like, imagine those actors, like not that the actors are the actual people in the show, but like imagine being an actor from any show where you had to say some really fucking bad shit, and then looking back and being like, I can't believe like they wrote that for me to say, even though I was supposed to like I was playing like a shitty person. Like, I don't know, like sometimes I think about the fact that like I will never let any specific words escape from my mouth because I don't even want to put them out there, whether I feel them or not. Like, I mean, we could take a bunch of different words and put them together in any sentence or phrase that we want, but like we have the minds to control that. And then there are some people that just say whatever's on their lung is on their tongue, like and the fact that like he really said, like, I'm here to celebrate, it's just so shitty. Oh, I don't know, it bends my brain anyway.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, um but af after that whole thing, they uh Keith kind of smoothed everything over, and him and Keith, you know, just had like a few I don't know, pleasantries, I guess. But things were kind of just like okay with them. Um we're gonna move on to Ruth.
SPEAKER_05Actually, yes. So we have alluded towards a conversation that Ruth and David have at the end of this episode, but before we get into that conversation, we should talk about how Ruth prepared herself for having that conversation. Yes, because this was actually this was the only fun funny part of this entire episode. Yeah, yeah, just this one small scene. So Ruth is trying to prepare herself to be in the mindset of having a gay son, and Ruth is I mean, she's in tune and she's aware of like David's behaviors, especially in the last episode when the guy walked out, she sprayed him with the hose. Like, she she knows stuff's up, yeah. And so she is at the flower shop where she's working, she's working with her co-worker. I forgot. Oh, Robbie name. I fucking love Robbie. Oh my god, because Robbie just honestly, I like the first time I watched it, I was like, why is Robbie being so rude to Ruth? But Robbie is just literally telling Ruth, like, you're overstepping.
SPEAKER_00Uh, you know what? I had the same come to Jesus moment. Yeah, like at first I was like, What? She's looking for help. And then I was like, you know what? Yeah, like that is very personal, actually. Yeah, and just with him for having boundaries.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, she's like literally asking him, like, when did you come out to your parents? And he's like, How do you know I'm gay? Like, why would you even say that? Like, right. And he says some dumb shit, like, my first word was perennial.
SPEAKER_00Like, and you know, yeah, because she's like, How did you tell your parents? He's like, What that I like flowers, uh-huh. And he goes, Oh, my first word was perennial.
SPEAKER_05That that really got me. That was a line that really got me this week. I was like, Shit, I love this. But Ruth is trying to like initiate this conversation with him, and so you know, at first she asks him, and he's like, Why would you ask me that?
SPEAKER_00Just like we were talking about, and then we end up going back to this scene, and Ruth decides in her head because he says, um, he says something about comparing it to him asking her about one of her intimate sexual details or or something like this.
SPEAKER_05And so, yeah, you're right. So, yeah, because he was he was like, You can't just say this. Like, it's not like I would ask you how your sex life is, although you do make it very well known around here. And honestly, Ruth's like professional behavior is absolutely appalling. She wants to be taken seriously as and like have a job, and she's like fucking her boss and like making it very obvious to the other people working there, i.e. Robbie. So, like, yeah, Ruth is being a fucking piece of shit at work, she's just going and acting like a teenager, and it's weird, honestly. It's it's cringe, it's cringe for everybody, and like that's that's the point that Robbie was trying to make. And so Ruth goes a step beyond cringe, and she decides in her head, like, okay, maybe a way to get Robbie to open up to me about how he told his parents he was gay is if I tell Robbie a really new actual thing about myself.
SPEAKER_00This was the like one of the best parts because she's like, Okay, do you want to hear something? Uh she phrases it in a way that's just like, oh yeah, she's she's like, Do you want to hear about something personal? I don't I don't know if those are the words, and he was like, No, but she she she continues anyway, and then she's like, Well, I was married for 30 years, and then I started to have a relationship with my hairdresser, and then and then like she tell like as she's telling the story, that's when Robbie's ears perk up, and he's like, Oh, and then he gets up from his table and moves to hers. Like, now I'm interested.
SPEAKER_05It was it was the whole back turn to her until she said, I was married 30 years, and the first time I had sex with anybody but my husband was with my hairdresser. He picked up, he turned around, he got on the stool, and he lounged and he was right through the rest of that story. It was so funny. His whole body language is hilarious.
SPEAKER_00And so basically, her her most intimate moment or embarrassing, or whatever I forgot I forgot how she quoted it, was that basically after 30 years of marriage, she sleeps with her hairdresser, and the first time that they're gonna fuck around, he asks her to, and she can say masturbate, so that he would know how to pleasure herself, so so that he would know what she likes. So he wants her to pleasure herself so he can know what she likes, and she couldn't do it because she didn't know how she's never done it.
SPEAKER_05And that's when Robbie's like, your hairdresser taught you how to masturbate, basically. She was like, Yeah, and I was 52.
SPEAKER_00And then she and then afterwards he's he's like he softened to her, so he's all like, oh honey. And then she's like, but she still didn't tell me. He's like, and I'm not going to you. He's like, but it's because I never did.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. And that's when Robbie explained how he never ended up coming out to his parents because he knew that like there were certain expectations from his parents, especially his mother, that um it it wasn't even like it would be I'm upset for my son. She would take it as like a personal offense that like she did something wrong. And he's like, I just wanted to avoid that because as a child, you know your place, and it wasn't it wasn't my place in this family at this time with my mother. Yeah, and so I think Ruth does some self-reflection in that moment, and I think she decides, like, oh, I'm gonna be open now, and like now everybody has to change because Ruth's ready to.
SPEAKER_00Well, I I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that she has a little bit more self-awareness.
SPEAKER_05No, but she's like a light switch, and we can't keep up, right?
SPEAKER_00Right. Because it's it's on one hand, it is a good thing because maybe she realizes that she's part of the reason he hasn't opened up to her. But just because you're ready doesn't mean he is, and that's actually one of the things that they get into later on.
SPEAKER_05So going back to the conversation that we've been talking about this whole episode, David comes home from the funeral, and Ruth's laying down on the couch with like a towel over her eyes.
SPEAKER_00I have a headache.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, she looks like the most dramatic being, like just like on the couch, one leg hanging off, arm sprawled out, like towel on the eyes, like I don't feel good. And he just literally says, I'm gay.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_05And Ruth is just like at first, she looks soft, and then she's like, Why didn't you tell me? He's like, Because I am telling you. She's like, No, why didn't you tell me sooner? And he's like, Because I wasn't ready, but I'm telling you now, and she's not getting it. It hurt that last time I was watching this episode. I was like, Oh my god, Ruth, shut up. He's literally having the moment with you that you've been waiting for, and you're getting angry that it didn't happen sooner. I know, like, just enjoy the moment.
SPEAKER_00I mean, on one hand, you can empathize with her because when you care about somebody and you love someone, no matter what the relationship is, right? Parent, child, boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, besties, you you don't want them to keep something from you. Like you would I would hope that my the people that I care about would feel comfortable. Oh, are you looking at the dog?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, I just caught a glimpse of Stella.
SPEAKER_00Your face has changed.
SPEAKER_05Oh my gosh, she's so cute.
SPEAKER_00I'm talking and I'm looking at Britney's face, and her face literally just went from interested to like, oh, shiny object. And I realized it was because the dog was looking out the window.
SPEAKER_05Dog's looking cute, got a good face, she got a good size head. Um, but getting something like no, I would hope that people don't keep things for me either, but think about it this way: I would not directly compare, but I guess like level of like secretiveness, like when I'm ready, I'll tell you type.
SPEAKER_00I feel like we can compare, like but that's also a hard, that's also a hard thing to accept. Yeah, that's that's the difference of ourselves, that it's not about us. No, no, I know that, but like or that, or that if it is about us, it's because something we did made somebody feel that they couldn't count on us, and so I think that Ruth had come to both of those realizations that one, somebody that she cared about was keeping something from her, and it might have been because they felt they couldn't come to her, yeah, no matter how existence, though.
SPEAKER_05Like her daughter does that, her old son does that. Like, it's no surprise that David did, but like whatever.
SPEAKER_00David calls her out on it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, but like think about it like this like if like think about when Alex proposed to you, right? Did you say why didn't you do this sooner? That's what I mean. Like he wasn't ready for it, and so then I got him just like David wasn't ready.
SPEAKER_00What he never proposed to me.
SPEAKER_05Alex never proposed to you.
SPEAKER_00No, we woke up one morning in Vegas and decided to get married. I mean, there was kind of like a proposal, but that was like afterwards, yeah. But like it was it wasn't like, oh, he took me somewhere and proposed. It was like, no, we had a trip to Vegas planned, and like a week before we left, I found out I was pregnant. And while we were there, we were just kind of like, do you want to get married? Okay, let's go after breakfast.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god, wait, so hold on. I I don't think I realized like the stories crossed over. We were in Vegas and pregnant, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So like that suck.
SPEAKER_05That's what I'm saying. I've looked I've never met to Vegas, I don't think I plan on it, but I know the whole point is to like drink and do everything you can't do at home. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh I mean, that was our that was our second time in Vegas.
SPEAKER_05Okay. So at least she had preferred experience where you can like not worry about another thing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And so then there was like a mini proposal, because then when we went back to the room after breakfast to get ready to go, apparently he packed a ring.
unknownWhat?
SPEAKER_00But but like the funny thing is this ring, it wasn't like he went out and bought it. It wasn't like he it was his grandmother's ring. But his grandmother gave me the ring, not him.
SPEAKER_05So he stole the ring from you.
SPEAKER_00Kind of, a little bit.
SPEAKER_05You know what? Honestly, makes sense for Alex to just take things. It all makes sense. It really does.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I guess that's on point.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, that that really is. He's like, well, nobody's using it right now, so it becomes mine. And I can just take it and nobody has to know.
SPEAKER_00I don't remember where it was like for him to take. But yeah. Yeah, that's that's his his grandmother was very ill. And um and before she died, she gave me the ring. Like literally took it off of her hand and gave it to me.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Shit.
SPEAKER_00But um and so yeah, that was that was like the first ring that I wore. But um, yeah, and it was it was just kind of like a I don't even it I don't know, I guess I could call it a proposal, but like it wasn't because like we had already decided. Yeah, no, I know what you mean. I know what you mean.
SPEAKER_05But like I I thought it was like uh he got down on one knee whole thing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, no, no. Yeah, I mean he did, but like, but no, he did just like in the wrong order, right? Like, but we said everything's kind of backwards, so it was fine.
SPEAKER_05That's fine, everything worked out in the room, but like it's it's just so funny, really is it's funny because it's Alex, that's why I've been shitting on Alex a lot lately lately. I don't plan on stopping, but like I think he likes it, it's okay. I think he does too. He's like, Oh, Brittany likes me, she she's hating on me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there you go.
SPEAKER_05Oh well, but I I just kind of like equate, like but back to what you were saying, yes. It's not it's it's not like right like why didn't you do this sooner? That's what I'm saying. Like in that moment, like you're just you're just present and you're trying to enjoy it, and you're trying to even just react to it, not necessarily enjoy, but react to it in like a way that you know could be more like conversational instead of just saying, why didn't you do this sooner and like being angry, like clearly angry? Like it's horrible. This is something like honestly, he should have celebrated, but or something that like she should have celebrated that he felt comfortable enough coming out to her. But I was thinking about something when you were talking. I may just have a different mindset about coming out because when I mean everybody comes out when they want to, and whatever age that may be, right? But for the most part, I feel like I know a lot of people who came out in high school, and high school was only like 15 years away. And so at that point, like things were much different 15 years ago compared to like 25 years ago, major changes happened between those 10 years. So the the idea of coming to like to approaching coming out with a more sensitive side instead of a more hateful side, I feel like is something that maybe it's just a me thing the way I understand it, but I feel like it's like a generational thing that like people like my age and like your age and in between understand that a little bit better compared to people older than us.
SPEAKER_02I think it's just like a taste of times, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05And it's like look, like there are still shitty fucking people who are hoping in the world today that like it's definitely a generality, but I think overall the older you are, or or maybe the younger you are, the easier it is for you to accept. That's what I mean, because it's like it it's the mindset that we don't have to accept anything anymore, it just is, and that's the change in the mindset, and that's like a societal mindset almost. Like, I'm not trying to say that to represent every single fucking person in our society because again, there are people that are super religious who won't acknowledge this, or like but it could it could just be so simple as oh, like you don't like asex, okay, then don't have any.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. I mean, exactly. I I don't use shrimp, so I don't.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and it's not that hard. It is no, it's just like we don't accept it, we don't decline it.
SPEAKER_00It just is, it just is like not hurting anybody, like fucking rules and laws should be there to protect one another from hurt, not love.
SPEAKER_05Thank you, and that's still a mindset that is unless it's like pedophilia obesity, because I'm not okay with that shit.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, fuck that.
unknownFuck that.
SPEAKER_00If both parties can consent, we're good to go. Yeah, I don't want the hate mail. You can do this, goats can't consent. I don't know, but I know it's some fucked up people out there.
SPEAKER_05That's like the same level of fucked up like my mom was talking about today. She's like, Why do people like dock the ears of their pit bulls? And I was like, I don't know, I guess for like aesthetics. She's like, no, but people literally do it with kitchen scissors. I'm like, I I don't want to hear that's awful. Yeah, like she she like made a Facebook for like real estate and stuff, and but like she's trying to like friend people that live around us so that's why she can, you know, like make like uh the right connections, yeah. Thank you. Yeah, so I what is that called? She can like network on there, but she's just literally just going on Facebook and looking at things. She's not like posting or commenting, but she's like exposed to Facebook now. She hasn't had Facebook, honestly, since like I don't know, like before I graduated high school, she got locked out of her Facebook. So I want to say maybe like 2012, 2011. Oh wow, it's not been on Facebook since then. So now she's exposed to all the Facebook shit again. Yeah, and she's like, I don't understand why people do things. And I'm like, this is literally why nobody goes on this website anymore.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I know people do that to cats, the strays. It's it's to show that they've like the trap uh catch a release.
SPEAKER_05Like catch a release is a game for no no no, I'm confused. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_00Like sh so stray cats, um, there are lots of organizations who will go out and it's like trap neuter release. So they they'll trap them, they'll spay, they'll neuter them, and then they'll put the clip the ear.
SPEAKER_05But that's while they're under, yeah.
SPEAKER_00No, no, no, yeah, it's not with kitchen scissors, but it and it's also a way to show others that this cat has been altered so that they don't try to catch it again, they just let it go, you know. But that's in in an effort to help reduce the stray population. Yes, but there's no like people are not just catching straight dogs and then putting them back on the street.
SPEAKER_05That's you know yeah, no, I I didn't understand the whole like so I don't know what it is with the stray population issue. That part didn't register here, but yeah, no, I don't people post weird fucking shit on Facebook. Yeah, well kind of reminds me of um oh my god, what was the show that we watched? Uh clickbait. Oh yeah, it it kind of reminds me of like what those two guys who like kidnapped what's his name. Um that's what they did for a living. They were like Facebook moderators, yeah, yeah, or like social media moderators, yeah. Ugh.
SPEAKER_00That's that's gotta be like an interesting but very probably strange taxing job.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that goes right into the category of um like mortician.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, but like to me, I don't know, at least I don't know which one I'd rather have.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I don't or like autopsy person. I I don't I don't want to play with dead bodies or see dead bodies. I'm okay with that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, just I just saw one, I'm good.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah, shit. Sorry. It's okay. Then again, we're watching a show about a funeral home, so sorry.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, it's okay, fine.
SPEAKER_05All right, anyway. Um, Ruth is uh very, very angry that not that her son is gay, but that he didn't come out to her sooner. And he's trying to explain. He's like, You and dad, like no one talked about anything, like none of us are like that except Nate, and then he makes like a jab at Nate. He's like, Yeah, Nate just like acts like that to distinguish himself from everybody else. But Nate's uh not Nate, I'm sorry. Uh David's pretty much telling his mom, like, we don't have that chemistry in our household where we could just openly say things, like we're quiet people who keep to ourselves and hide things from each other because we're expected to act a certain way. And it's just funny because he's kind of saying what Robbie was telling her earlier about Robbie's family.
SPEAKER_00That's true. I didn't really think about it that way.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. And I don't know if that's why I was saying, like, I have a feeling Ruth was thinking to herself, like, oh shit, this is kind of like my family dynamic. And now, like, the light switch was off, and now I'm gonna turn it on. I'm gonna be different. And like, I think David says something like, just because you're acting this way now doesn't mean we all have to act this way now. He did say something like that. I just can't find the exact quote.
SPEAKER_00I liked when he said that she loves the part of him that's her son, and she's like, All of you is my son. Like, you're not some chicken.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god, that was my quote of the week.
SPEAKER_00I'm I screwed up the quote, but like that was mine too.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I was trying to remember it so so I could say it, and I forgot it. She was like, I love all parts of you, I'm not gonna pick them like a chicken.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I was like when she said chicken, I was like, Where the fuck did that come from?
SPEAKER_05But that was an analogy, but like some kind of chicken rude, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And it's like I think that she just wants to mother him, she just wants to take care of him and and be there for him, and and I think that the whole comment that she made, like, oh, about when he was a kid and it was easier. I I think that there's a part of her that was wanting that, but realizing how she can't have that anymore.
SPEAKER_05And it's hard, yeah, it's hard for her, it is, and um, it kind of reminds me of this quote that I heard, or not like this quote or anything I really live by. It was like I was watching like um this YouTuber that's like a model. She's actually really nice, she comes up with like good ideas and stuff like that for like cooking and like your house and stuff. She said something about like the relationship with her husband and her children. She was like, My relationship with my husband comes first, and my relationship with my children comes second. And I feel like that's kind of like how Ruth was until her husband died, and now she's trying to like kind of switch. I mean, like, there's nothing to really switch, but now her children got moved up to number one, and so instead of her husband being her main priority, now she's trying to make her children her main priority, but that's not how like the family dynamic has been. That's not how they were really raised. Like, yes, she loved them and cared for them and stuff, but like she's trying to just have like a normal conversation with them, which she has never had before. And so think about like somebody you've never talked to before trying to come up to you and ask you things, and you're like, um, I'm not gonna just talk to you because you want to talk to me.
SPEAKER_00Right, but like even when, and this is before this, even when David and Ruth are having dinner, and you can see that it's really awkward, and he's like, Well, where's Claire? And she's like, Well, she says she's at a movie or wherever she's and it's like she says she is, and I mean, I get part of it is like kids lie, teenagers lie, but I feel like that was still dismissive because it's like that's your child, she's the youngest, she's still in high school, so she's probably a minor, right? And you don't know where she's at.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's that's what I mean. Like it's uh it's like her children are her main priority in the sense of I want to have a good relationship with you, but not like I'm gonna be a mother like I need to be. Yeah, and that's why Claire has that whole dynamic, which was kind of expressed throughout this episode too, when she was talking with the school counselor. The school counselor was like pretty much saying, like, are you interested in anything that like kids are into? Because you talk as if you're an adult, but you're not right.
SPEAKER_00Well, she's she makes that comment. She's like, something about like, oh, that's so teenage bullshit or whatever. He's like, but you are a teenager, uh-huh.
SPEAKER_05And it's almost just like, and then she does the thing with her eyes where she's just like, Yeah, and where she like dugs them out of her head when she realizes something. That's like a trait of hers, right?
SPEAKER_00I don't know if it was the makeup or or maybe I just haven't noticed it, but I feel like her eyes are very strange this episode.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, I feel like that when she realizes things, or when she's having like an epiphany in her head, her eyes bulge out of her head, which is like an actor's choice. It's not like I wouldn't have said that if it was like a condition that the actor has, but like this is like it was like a choice she was making for her character, and it's just funny because like Claire's supposed to be like portrayed as like kind of weird, like the black cloud-ish, like you know, and or the black sheep of the family, that's what I meant, or just the black cloud generally, like she's supposed to be like kind of portrayed that way, and to really like you know, like fall and like feed into like the weirdness of her. I I just I thought that was really funny. It's just really funny, like to notice what's going on when she bugs her eyes out. And yeah, even Clara's episode, she actually um she's being really cute with uh sorry, she must hear something else.
SPEAKER_00Oh, the person to I don't know, somebody must have sneezed down the block or something. She's like, Are you okay?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, oh my god, wait, what's that kid's name that she's like with?
SPEAKER_00Uh Gabe.
SPEAKER_05Thank you. I was like, it ends with an E. I just forgot what it was. Yeah, no, Claire and Gabe are so cute this episode, honestly. Yeah, like cute in like a like oh, that's like but like oh like they like took a shower together, which like I don't I think if like I I don't know, but that's I know nobody would catch me taking a shower at 17 with a guy, but I would know in my head, like fuck that, I would never get away.
SPEAKER_00And then and he's singing, and she's like, Oh shh, before my mom hears you. So yeah, was she in the house?
SPEAKER_01Like, uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00I I have so many questions and I don't even know where to begin. So we're gonna skip.
SPEAKER_05I know it's like what the fuck? And he's like, Yeah, here it smells like tangerines.
SPEAKER_00Like my girl Claire, she likes it clean. I'm like ill. She smells like tangerines, it's so weird, but like all right. So I guess we'll we'll go into Claire's story. Basically, Claire shows up at school with Gabe, who's back from his hospital vacation, and it's a fucking suicide attempt.
SPEAKER_05It's a hospital vacation.
SPEAKER_00I mean just no, it was funny.
SPEAKER_05It was funny. It was actually really funny.
SPEAKER_00Am I the only one who sees a hospital as a vacation? Okay, I guess it's just me.
SPEAKER_05Um honestly, like I get it. I do get it.
SPEAKER_00Uh when I was a kid, my uncle used to say that all the time, and I used to think he was so crazy for saying that, but I get it. I get it now.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, like if I need surgery soon, which I don't think I will, but if I do, I'm gonna see that as a mobile vacation.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Um he's back at school and he's worried about what people are gonna say to him.
SPEAKER_00Thank you. Um, Clara's seeing that school psychologist again. And I have a question. Because you know, like as she's talking about this and that and whatever, like, why didn't this work out and why didn't that work out? Like her demeanor changes, and and she's like, Well, this is confidential, right? And he goes, 'Yeah, he puts the pencil down so like he could show her,' and then she starts to say that his that Gabe suicide attempt or uh OD wasn't an accident, that she thinks it was like a suicide attempt. Now she says it in the sense of like what can she do to help? But I feel like doesn't that like negate confidentiality stuff?
SPEAKER_05Um, I think because he was speaking very generally about it, that it's fine.
SPEAKER_00No, no, no. In the sense of like, I mean, maybe mandated reporters weren't a thing back then, but I feel like reporters weren't a thing. Right, like, but if the student came to you, you're supposed to be like a school psychologist and said, um, I think my friend's OD wasn't an accident. I think it was on purpose. I feel like you should report that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Right. I don't like I know it's a TV show, and I know it's it may not have anything to do with the plot line, but it was just something that kind of stood out to me as a person living in 2023.
SPEAKER_05Let's talk about the other couple in the show.
SPEAKER_00Before we talk about the other couple, can we segue into um can we just mention two quick things? And we talked about that weird shit at the shower, but then when Gabe comes out of school, there's one scene where he comes out of school and he kind of like puts his head in her lap. Yeah. That was you see, that's what I would call cute. Yeah, no, it was fine. But then when the counselor kind of sees them and she's like hiding. I I wonder if it was because she didn't want, is it because she liked him and didn't want him to see her with a guy, or is it because she didn't want him to know that Gabe was who she was talking about?
SPEAKER_05Going back to Gabe and Claire, just to like reintroduce this, going back to Gabe and Claire, there was some point where Gabe did leave school and they were sitting by the tree, and he had Gabe had his head in Claire's lap, and they were talking, and Claire looks up and she sees her, like the counselor, the school counselor, getting out of his car and walking to the school. They lock eyes, and then she starts trying to cover her face, especially like with her hair.
SPEAKER_00Right. So, Lisa, you're saying that like why was she trying to shy away from it?
SPEAKER_05Because maybe she liked him or something.
SPEAKER_00I don't know if I think that. I was just trying to think of reasons that she would do that.
SPEAKER_05I think she may have did that because afterwards when she had like her final meeting with the counselor for this episode, she said something like, he said something like, Why didn't you tell me about your relationship with with Gabe? Right. She was like, Because I didn't want you um making judgments about the people that I hang out with, or something like that. And so maybe she's just like slightly embarrassed of his actions, but at the same time, she loves him so much that she's still being supportive and acting supportive and like loving towards him. But maybe she's like maybe she doesn't want to be associated with people like that, but she can't help it. She's kind of like drawn to people like that. Like, look at look at Parker. That's like her only other friend. Yeah, she's drawn to people who need help, right?
SPEAKER_00But but when she said, like, oh, I didn't want you to make judgments, that's what led me to think that maybe it was because she didn't want the counselor to put two and two together.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I don't know. At the same time, though, everybody in the school was talking about gig literally saying shit to him, so it's hard. Not to connect those pieces really easily. And I feel like that's even why Claire didn't say Gabe's name when she was talking about like because it was just so obvious like who they were talking about.
SPEAKER_00And then the other like kind of cringe cringe moment was when they were in the back of the hearse, and she's helping him with the math. And yeah, and so whatever. She's helping him, and he's like, I didn't know you were a trick bitch.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I didn't know you were a trick bitch.
SPEAKER_00Whatever. And then she tells him what she's scared of. And then she's like, Okay, well, what are you scared of? And he's like, not finishing my math home ring. And she's like, Well, I told you. And then he's like, I'm scared that you're too good for me. Uh-huh. And she's like, oh, and she's like, like jumping into his lap, like, uh, take a breath, bitch. It's a line.
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm. It really was a line.
SPEAKER_00But like, but I feel like it just goes to show how on one hand, she's here in the counselor's office talking about all of her likes and dislikes and how these are fucking teenagers and whatever. But then on the other hand, she's so gullible.
SPEAKER_05I was gonna say she's cynical but oblivious.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because she's a teenager.
SPEAKER_05Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00And then also she makes that thing where she said, like he says, um, oh, some some of the club, one of the clubs that she was in, and that why didn't she finish it? And she was like, Oh, censorship because I wrote a story about a girl who makes heads explode. Yeah, it was like didn't she do that in one of the episodes where she was like sitting in class and she had a daydream that she made her teacher's head explode?
SPEAKER_03Maybe I don't remember that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I feel like I don't remember what the teacher was, but there was like one teacher that she made like their head explode.
SPEAKER_05That's a funny callback to that, though.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and that's what it reminded me of. And I was like, I wonder if that's why they did that, or if that's where she why she envisioned that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it was still on her mind almost. Wow. Well, but that's pretty much it though for Claire and Gabe. Like, she's being supportive of him coming back to school. Um, he calls her a trig bitch in like a cute way. Um, they take a shower together and we learn that her hair smells like Tangerines. And also that um if if they get caught, then Ruth's gonna fry up his balls for breakfast. Right, because that's like, is that what you guys eat here? And Claire's like, yeah. And that was it. Yeah, and so moving on now from our current couple that we're talking about to the other couple that exists in the series. We have the big Nate and Brenda story arc that pretty much is just Billy. Yeah, so what do I mean by that, Lisa?
SPEAKER_00Well, here's one thing that I noticed about the Nate and Brenda story arc that Brenda really comes into her own a lot more in this episode. It's not just Brenda existing because of Nate. Now I feel like Brenda is more of a fully fledged out character. And Brenda confronts Billy about his bullshit, you know, taking the pictures and all that.
SPEAKER_05He literally shows him the picture that was left or in the mailbox.
SPEAKER_00And he's like, You think I did that? And she's just like, I'm paraphrasing, but she's like, Cut the shit and give me your key.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You know, and and then he's he starts with the bargaining, and he's like, No, no, no, no, no, but I'm I'll I'll go back on my meds and blah blah blah, and and this and that. And Brenda's, you know, sticks to her guns and she's just like, no, that's it. I'm done. You know, I I can't do this anymore. And Billy, you know, he's just he I guess he just either can't or won't bear the thought that Brenda's not there for him. You know, he's like, Oh, you're you're the most important thing in my life, and she tells him, like, that's kind of fucked up. Um and then he he also compares his drug use to her drug use by picking up like the bag of pot on the table. But he ends up leaving, um, then Brenda and Nate are in a scene and she tells him what happened, and and Nate is just kind of like that's it. Like Nate is disappointed, but I feel like while I kind of understand why Nate feels like it's not enough, I also understand you know, um from an outsider's perspective, right? But that that's that's huge for Brenda. That's a really, really big step that she just took by setting that boundary with Billy. Um yeah, and then basically she ends up breaking up with Nate. You know, she's like, oh, and I changed the locks, so your key is no good anyway.
SPEAKER_05But I don't know if you picked up on it. It it was, I'm sure you did pick up on it because it wasn't anything that you would have to like infer, but like Billy literally says, when Brenda's like, Well, I could just change the locks, and Billy's like, Do you understand how easy it is to break into this house? And that was such a boundary breaker. Oh, that was a boundary breaker. Like, no, that's why there are locks in the first place to keep people out.
SPEAKER_00Right. Well, clearly he's not opposed to it, right? Because otherwise, how else would he have gotten into their hotel room in Vegas?
SPEAKER_05Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00I'm sure he didn't have a key.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and our final like calls back to this too, right?
SPEAKER_00But even if he had even if he accessed the key in Vegas, he wasn't supposed to be in that room, so it's still breaking in.
SPEAKER_05Yep. The weirdest thing is that I said earlier by accident, I said that like the the picture of them sleeping was found in like her mailbox. She like threw it down on the table with mail, and I forgot it was just like in the developed photos, like it was just in the camera roll, and that's how they got the photo.
SPEAKER_00Right, when they were looking at the photos, uh-huh.
SPEAKER_05And so then Billy was saying, like, oh, that wasn't me. You really think that was me? And Brenda's like cutting out with this shit. Like, when you're not on your meds, you get creepy. She literally said that. And so, anyway, um, yeah, she's right. They they ended up like Nate and Brenda went to dinner, and Nate was like talking about how weird it is. Miranda was also agreeing how weird it is, and then it was like all of a sudden Brenda's tune changed, and she's like, Well, now she was like, got up, like it looked like they ordered, they were waiting for their food or something, and she was just getting up and she's like, I'm done talking about this with you, and maybe we need to spend some time apart from each other.
SPEAKER_00Also, can I say one other thing about Billy's threat to break in? Yes, Brenda always leaves a fucking door open. Brenda's whole door is made out of glass, she's asking for I know, but but didn't I just talk about this in a different episode? Like, why the fuck is there a door open? So Billy doesn't even have to break in, he can just fucking walk in.
SPEAKER_05Yep. Yep, yeah. She really, I guess, okay. I I think a lot about like set design and costume design in reference to a character's personality. Do you think that maybe her house was designed to be mostly glass to like juxtapose the fact that she's so closed, but her house is so open because you can see right into it, but she doesn't make herself that way. I like that. Although she pretends like she is, and sometimes she'll just say some weird shit. It's really just to like divert the attention off of what she actually feels.
SPEAKER_00Because her whole house is glass. I know, and I I really, really like where you're going, right? And especially where we see where Billy lives in relation to maybe what's going on in his party.
SPEAKER_05I can't wait to get into this in like literally three minutes.
SPEAKER_00But like I thought it was, but I guess it doesn't have to be, but there's a bed there, which I guess is why, or at least a mattress. So I guess that's why I thought it would you starving artist type vibe.
SPEAKER_05Actually, let's go right to that because that's the next like okay, Brenda Billy Nate scene that we see. Um, Nate's calling Brenda saying, like, don't just lay in bed and yell fuck you at the phone, like, pick up, talk to me. And then he hangs up and immediately the phone like rings again. And so Nick's like, not Nick, I'm sorry. Oh my god, Nate's like, hello. And then all of a sudden, like we know that oh my god, is somebody calling the nursing home to like the nursing home?
SPEAKER_00What am I saying? What am I saying? Oh my god, so they're already dead.
SPEAKER_05Yes, I know. I don't know where my brain is. Um, somebody calling the funeral home to like have a body picked up, and it was weird because he said something like, What what hospital or something like that? And he was like, Oh, it's residence, and that's how we find out that he's going to somebody's residence to pick up a body.
SPEAKER_00So anyway, maybe that's what made me think he left there, like because they said residence. I don't know. It just assumed it was home.
SPEAKER_05Well, I figured that you know, the the person who called up, which we know is Billy, um, you know, said that just to make me think so obvious. Right? Another one. Um he said that just to let him not be thrown off by the fact that he's not pulling up to a hospital. And so Nate walks inside with the gurney, like fucking idiot. And and it's like an abandoned building, it's like clearly fucking abandoned. Like he walks in, there's like two like beautiful like front doors, and it almost looks like there could be like stained glass or like glass panels on the top of these arched doors. Like, it looks like it was expensive at one point in time, but the whole fucking building's empty and dark, and there's no lights, but there's like a fucking shaft elevator.
SPEAKER_00And Nate's like, okay, and it reminds me of like some you know refurbished factory building you find nowadays in like Red Hook or Williamsburg that's like cool to live in.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but it wasn't refurbished yet. Well, but you know, but you know, yeah, and so honestly, Nate starts acting like the typical white people in a horror film at this point, and he seems like what he sees the signs and he keeps on going. That's what I mean, and literally he does see the signs.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so the signs, pictures, he gets in the older.
SPEAKER_05Uh-huh. He gets in the older picture of Claire.
SPEAKER_00Me and your sister. Literally, your it says your sister, so you so you know exactly who his audience was, and it's you, buddy. Have you not caught on? And then it's like you and my sister, so now you know where you're at.
SPEAKER_05It was a picture of like Nate, like literally, like in missionary style, like Brenda. You just needed to ask.
unknownI know.
SPEAKER_05I was just like, what? And then there's a plaque on the wall that says, like, exhibition continues right in the next room. And he fucking walks to the next room. Right. And so you okay?
SPEAKER_00Do I need to call number one?
SPEAKER_05I hear someone choking, somebody else going, oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_05My door's unlocked. I'm okay. It was just really loud. It's because the stairway is right next to you. So I heard like the the voices echoing up the stairway. Yeah, that was that was just weird. Sorry. I I I just I didn't know if it was like a dog or a kid because there's a kid on this floor that just screams sometimes.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's fun.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, like a little toddler that just screams. Anyway, um, yeah, and Nate walks into the next room and follows it. And what does he see when he walks into the next room?
SPEAKER_00I mean, not for nothing though, but like I would not be mad to live in that apartment.
SPEAKER_05No, that's the thing. It's almost like he's walking up into an apartment, and I was thinking.
SPEAKER_00I mean, you know, maybe without the semi-weird dead body installation vibe going on, knife in the wall type shit.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I keep forgetting that like Billy is in a sense an artist, and so while his main form of like art is photography, he also does other things, and like you see things, that's his half mannequins around.
SPEAKER_00Did you not notice with like legs in the wind?
SPEAKER_05Those are those could be considered sculptures, and I think honestly, that's just his studio.
SPEAKER_00No, and that's yeah, but he probably lives there too.
SPEAKER_05Well, no, I mean like maybe, but like I mean, like I from what I see, excuse me, not that like I'm going to people's studios often, but like I've just seen a lot of like art studios in TV shows. I think actually I watched like maybe fucking three whole episodes of like Smallville or Superheroes, no, not superheroes. Heroes with like Hayden Panetier. Is that what that show was called? Okay, and I think one of them starts off in like an art studio, and I remember like somebody's bed was there too. And I think honestly, that's what like people do. They like throw a mattress on the floor and they like get all their art out and then sleep and wake up and do art again. That's what the art people do. I'm not an art person, I don't know. But that could just be that situation. But maybe was living here.
SPEAKER_00The thing is, I mean, I know that that the parents, I mean, we're and we're putting like a realistic spin on a fictional show, but I think the realistic thing is like well, most artists struggle to make a living, they don't necessarily have a lot of disposable income. So to have to live and pay rent or to pay for housing and then to pay for studio is probably hard. So I feel like maybe that's why a lot of artists live and work in the same general space. Like maybe there's there's a section where it's like studio and a section where it's home, but yeah, that's what I'm thinking.
SPEAKER_05No, logic, logically, that does make sense. I just like I guess I just don't I'm not like immersed in that, so it wouldn't click in my head when I watch it, like how it clicks for other people. Also, context clues, it also makes sense why like Billy just shows up randomly at Brenda's house and showers when she's not home and stuff.
SPEAKER_00That's true, right? Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_05Like he did in that, like I think that's when him and Nate met in like the second third.
SPEAKER_00He was there showering. Yeah, yeah, and and when she tells him to get out, she's like, get your your clothes, your robe, your whatever.
SPEAKER_05So yeah, probably does. So Nate walks into Billy's apartment studio, and completely pitch dark, there's weird paintings and just weird like bodies, like mannequin parts around.
SPEAKER_00Giant portrait of him over the mattress.
SPEAKER_05But don't forget the most obvious thing, there's like a fucking path of like candles lit. Yes, and it must be like hundreds of candles, it really is, but like it was also really creepy, but like hundreds of candles lit and like a fucking path leading all the way down to the mattress that we were talking about. Yeah, that is true, but it like Nate's walking down this path to this mattress that looks like it has like um like a plastic, like white sheet over it. Yeah, you can see there's blood on it, and yeah, and then what was the plaque that was right in front of the the bloody bed? What did it say? I forgot what it said. I don't remember. It was like one of like the art exhibition.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I just I don't remember what it says.
SPEAKER_05It was like this is because of you, or this this is your future, or this is your destiny, or some shit like that.
SPEAKER_00I would have to look up the episode, and I don't have it here. So don't even worry about it, but um, yeah, I don't remember what what the thing said. I I it's it's like something like like you said, like what you did, or this is on you, or something like that. But basically, what Nate sees is a mattress on the floor, um, up against up on the wall, there's a giant portrait of Billy, and then you can tell that there's something under the sheet, probably a body, and with you know, like a white sheet covering everything. So you don't you don't see what's under it, and then as Nate gets closer, Billy pops out and he's like, surprise! Uh-huh. And he just jumps out and he's like laughing and he's happy, and he's like, haha, it's paint, and he's like showing him um his wrists, basically, like if he's Christ, you know, Jesus laying under there, and and and then you realize that's the pose that he was in. It's like, no, Billy, you're not Jesus.
SPEAKER_05But if you look at his wrist though, like it it really does look like he cut them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05And so, yeah, and so anyway, Nate's just like, this is fucked up, and Nate goes to leave, and Billy's kind of like, because of like their interaction when Billy ran out from under the bed or under under the sheet on top of the bed, um, he Billy's in a position where he's closer to the exit, and so he starts.
SPEAKER_00No, he runs, he runs up ahead of Nate.
SPEAKER_05No, that's what I'm saying. Like when Billy jumps out of the bed, his position, like right now, he's kind of like more towards the exit because like he ran past Nate when he jumped up out of the bed. So as Nate's going to leave, Billy's still ahead of him, kind of blocks the doorway and grabs a box cutter like out of the wall.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like he's that's just where I keep my knife.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, like the blade was shoved into the wall, so he just like pulled it out, like as if he was knife throwing and pulled the knife out, you know? And so he starts waving it around. Nate's like backing up and like stumbling over stuff because now he's like, he's not just like this is like a like a stupid kid. He's like, oh my god, he could actually hurt me. So Billy starts talking about Nate's um, I'm sorry, Brenda's ex and how Trevor, right, and how Trevor thought that he could just you know step into somebody's life and like remove, like, you know, distract them from the other people around them.
SPEAKER_00And Nate's like, I don't well he says, he's like, oh, because she's not allowed to love anyone else, and Billy's like, no, she's not able to love anyone else. She's not able to love anyone else as much as she loves Billy.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and that's when Nate tells Billy, well, like she broke up with me today, so she's not able to love me, I guess. Like, right, and Billy's like so taken back that he's just standing there and they're kind of quiet for a while, and then he goes, That's probably for the best. You and Brenda, never a good idea.
SPEAKER_00And and Nate calls Brenda Wren, and he's like, You're not allowed to call her that.
SPEAKER_05And I thought that that's when he says it doesn't matter anymore because like she broke up with me. She took my key. Yeah, and you know what? I noticed, you know, this last time that I watched it, I noticed that when he said, when Nate said to Billy, she took my key, something resonated with Billy there because they were talking about the keys earlier on. So maybe in his head he was like, Oh shit, it's legit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think you're right.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so after Billy was like, Oh, it's probably for the best. Nate's like, Yeah, tell me about it.
SPEAKER_00And he like, hey, look, I gotta go, bye. And you you see him leave and but then you can kind of hear his footsteps running down the hall. He like fucking Nate is getting the fuck out of here.
SPEAKER_05Billy's just standing there fucking twirling the box cutter.
SPEAKER_00You know, it's just a normal day.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and this is I honestly the buildup for this scene was so big and then it just kind of like ended.
SPEAKER_00Right. And that and I think that that's where my brain went. It was like Billy was alive, he he didn't honestly the first time I watched it, I thought it was gonna be Brenda under there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, me too.
SPEAKER_00I really, really thought he killed Brenda.
SPEAKER_03Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00And was like, because everything was pointed at Nate.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I figured, oh no, Billy is pissed off at Brenda and he wants to hurt Nate. Yeah. And so then when Brenda, not that I want Brenda dead by any means, but then when it wasn't Brenda and it wasn't Billy, and it was all a fucking joke, it was like, wait, no, this can't be what she meant. Like, and and so in my head, I rationalized. Instead of just absorbing the moment, it was kind of like, okay, but then something else.
SPEAKER_05It yeah. I mean so there is a something else, but like in this moment, you didn't know that when we were watching it for the first time.
SPEAKER_00Right. Yeah. And and so it was it was hard because I just kept waiting for that moment instead of just watching the episode to watch it. But no, no, no, it's it's fine. It it's totally fine. Because afterwards, when I went back, and then it was like, okay, let me just let me just watch and absorb, and then it was cool.
SPEAKER_05Um but um I just feel like there was such a buildup for something bigger to happen, and then all of a sudden, like Nate weasels his way out of there.
SPEAKER_00It right, exactly. Like Billy's there with a box cutter, no dead body, and it's just like gotta go by. And Billy's like, oh, okay, cool, bye. Like, but then the next time we see Billy, like Brenda's watching, I don't know, some old TV show. I don't, I don't really remember like what she's watching. And he breaks in. You hear the glass, you hear the glass, and he he just breaks right in, and he's telling her, I know how to fix it. And he's like, We don't have to be those people anymore, and you know, you can tell that he's just on a back, yeah. And come to find out, he turns around, and you see where he had the tattoo that said, um Isabel. Yeah, Isabel. I was trying to think of the other name, and I was like, Oh, Nathaniel. Yeah, Nathaniel and Isabel. But I was like, Yeah, his said Isabel. It's cut out, like his skin is cut out of his body.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00And Brenda's horrified, and she's like, oh my god, like he lost a lot of blood. And Billy is just, nope, I know what we need to do. I know what we need to do. And and you know, Brenda realizes what's gonna happen, so she tries to talk him down, and she's like, Okay, well, you know, give me the knife and I'll do it. And he's like, No, no, no, I have to do it.
SPEAKER_05And he's like, Because Nathaniel always saves Isabel, even like when it's like something she wants to do, Nathaniel always does it, and that's when Brenda screams, like, they're just characters in a book, they're not real. And he's like, I'm still gonna do it.
SPEAKER_00And yeah, and he he like rips her dress or her nightgown or whatever, cuts her.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god, puts her on the floor, rips her nightgown, so it's one of her Nathaniel tattoos exposed.
SPEAKER_00And she she hits him in the head with something, right? Is that what happened? Because then I know he banged, he bangs his head on the wall, but I forgot if she hits him first.
SPEAKER_05She was like trying to get him off of her, and she like kicked him in a way that like threw him backwards, and he hit his head against the wall in a way that wouldn't knock him out. But he did. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then the next thing you see is like she's in a hospital or something.
SPEAKER_04Or she calls 911.
SPEAKER_00Well, she calls 911, right? Uh for an ambulance, but then you see she's like at a hospital, and he's laying in a bed, kind of ass up, but you don't see his ass, unfortunately. He's got a bandage on his back, and he's tied to the bed. And Nate gets there, and you find out that she's had him committed. And, you know, she's like so distraught, but she knows that that's what she has to do. And, you know, Nate is just kind of supportive of her, which is fine, I guess. I mean, I don't really know what else he's supposed to say, but I'm just kind of happy that he's not like, Oh, I told you this was gonna happen.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah, and so like there's there's not there's more scene, but not a lot of dialogue. A lot of it is just kind of inaudible and just visual, where you see her signing papers and this and that, and she's sitting next to him and she just kind of like covers his ass a little bit more, like with a blanket. But he's he's knocked out. Billy is knocked out, like he's sedated, he's not talking, he's not acting, he's nothing, he's just like sleeping or whatever. Um I think that that's where Nate and Brenda leave off, right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, with a hug in the hospital. And I think the end of the show, like the ending to the show ends with the shower scene, possibly Claire and Gabe.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but also like the one scene that we didn't talk about, it goes back to David, and he's he's like in bed, I don't know, going to sleep or whatever.
SPEAKER_05That's how this okay, I'm sorry. This is how the show ends.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, I think it's going to be like I don't know, yeah. Um I'm here. I don't know what just happened.
SPEAKER_05I was like, why are the lights off? Uh for context, guys. I don't know if Lisa's gonna leave this in, but we're on Zoom recording and her lights just went completely out. Yeah, I just need to be dark.
SPEAKER_00Wait, wait, I can't hear you. Hold on.
SPEAKER_01There's a light.
SPEAKER_00I don't know if it I don't know if the light blew out or what.
SPEAKER_05I was gonna say if it was a power outage, then this would have gone out. I mean, no issue with like the the breakers to see if one of them flipped off.
SPEAKER_00I still the printer is still on. I still see the light of the printer. My computer is still charging, the lights in the backyard are still on.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's probably just the light itself that would that you were using.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, I don't know. Alright, whatever. I don't I don't use that light a lot, but whatever. It's a little darker now, but we're good. You're like, hello? I'm like, what'd you say?
SPEAKER_05No, I was so confused. My gosh, like we were saying, um David last scene of the episode is David. David's laying in bed, all of a sudden David's eyes just like open really fast, and we see that Mark sitting behind him, telling him about how like basically just being the devil on David's shoulder, and David actually succumbs to what Mark's saying and tries to pray the gay away. Yeah, that's literally how the episode ends. David's on his knees praying to God that he could just be normal. It was horrible, it was horrible to see that. It was disgusting. It I mean, it's it's what David thought was the right thing to do, but it's just sad. It was sickening.
SPEAKER_00Right, like that's how I took it. It's like so sad. And he's he's like pleading with this ghost to to stop. And it's like okay, when he was talking to Keith in that scene outside the funeral, yeah, he makes a comment that he's like something like, oh, when when in church that he sees the guy with like the five-year-old or whatever bouncing.
SPEAKER_05Well, he's like, I just want to be that guy in church with the five-year-old on my lap, and Keith's like, you still can be that right.
SPEAKER_00And he's like, he's like, plus that guy probably hasn't had sex with his wife in five years. And it's like, yes, David, you you can like men and you can still have kids, and it's okay. But that scene really just it made me sad for him, like much sadder, especially when he struggled so hard this whole episode to kind of defend himself against himself. But I guess maybe that's just indicative of his internal struggle.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but it just it seems like this is like a not like a character trait of David, but like how David does things. I mean, this isn't the first time in the episode we see him just like hitting rock bottom, like mentally or with decisions. Like David could be moving in the right direction, doing the right thing, and then all of a sudden he's right at the bottom again. And so David has a lot of growing to do. He does, and like any character, there is growth, but right now, like he was yelling, stop, stop, to his hallucination of Mark, and then falls out of bed to his knees and prays to God to just make him not feel lonely. Right, right, to take the loneliness away, like it was it was so sad. And he was like rocking while he was praying, too, on the floor. It it was really sad, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But that's how I mean that's how the episode ends. Um one thing that I noticed in this episode, and I don't know if it's because I because like we watched this episode so many times, and maybe I don't remember, I felt like the camera work was different. I felt like this episode had a much more shaky and dark camera vibe to it. So like there were scenes where the the camera just wasn't still. It was like, okay, so when you're filming, I mean, not not that I'm like a professional in a movie set or whatever, but you know, like these like those rolly things, I don't know what they're called, um so that the camera is still and and I felt like a lot of scenes, it was almost as if it was handheld or shaky, and I feel like that has to be a deliberate decision, and then some of the close-ups and some of the scenes were darker, and it and it gave it like a real edge, and I feel like it just went with the vibe of this episode. It did, and and then I try to think like a little bit deeper, and I don't know if I'm reaching here, but I was like, well, I was trying to look for like the double entendre with the name of the episode, and it was like a private life, and so I was wondering if it was because they wanted to have like a little bit of a voyeuristic feel. So that's that's kind of what I came up with.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I I feel like everything you're saying can be true. I I like partially agree with what you're saying. I I really feel like calling this episode a private life can definitely hit the nail in a lot of different directions, but at the same time, it's funny, like Ruth completely goes against a private life. She does not understand a private life anymore, she's too open now. It's it's silly how like it can apply and then it can't apply. But yeah. Um, so I would have to say my graviggers of the week would definitely have to be Rico and Billy for sure. Um, but really in reality, I think it's Rico and Brenda.
SPEAKER_00Really? I just had Rico.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I I feel like because of Brenda's denial, it put herself in a situation where she or Nate, or she and Nate could have been murdered or severely injured at the hands of her brother. Because she was told so many times by her parents, who I know she doesn't have a good relationship with them or a trusting relationship with them, and even by Nate, that like Billy's dangerous to himself and others, and she just wanted to ignore that and deny that. And it seems like this isn't something that's just been like for the time that we know her, it's been for a very long time, especially like she said, like when she was 18, like when Trevor broke up because that's when Billy got sick, and Nate was like that's what he wanted, but that's what he wanted.
SPEAKER_00So, and we know that that's how come Brenda didn't go off to college was to stay behind for Billy, yeah, and so it's it's clearly been going on for a very long time.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I mean, if the family was just on board with his mental health, it'd be different, but obviously they don't have a healthy family dynamic at all, and that is the whole point of him not getting the right um like health services provided to him. It's because his family's not doing anything for him, and yes, he's an adult, but he's not in a place to make decisions for himself, especially mental like um healthcare decisions for himself.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_05And so, um besides grave digger great I can't speak, besides gravigger of the week, we also do something else, and it's slipping my mind.
SPEAKER_00The quilt that had me six feet under, yes, so I for me it was that that um yes, like which is like I don't I don't pick what parts I love with you, like some I love of you like some kind of chicken, like I oh my god, I can't even remember the exact quote right now, uh-huh, but that was it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I think for me it was like looking back at the entire episode, it was either I didn't know you were a trick bitch, or I don't dress like Jackie Kennedy, but I do fuck men.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05What was that exact line? Hold on, I could find that exact line.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I have no, I I actually have that one.
SPEAKER_05I have it too, yeah. Hold on. It says like Jackie Kennedy, but I have sex with men. Yep, yeah, I pretty much got her right, which was funny, and so with that, yeah, that pretty much covers episode 12. Yeah now we have one episode to go.
SPEAKER_00I know, and then we're done with season one.
SPEAKER_05Then we're done with season one.
SPEAKER_00Um I can't believe like we finished a whole season already. Well, almost. This is the penultimate episode. Yeah, like my five dollar word, yeah.
SPEAKER_05It just it feels honestly, I feel like we're still talking about clickbait. Like it, I just feel like time went by so fast between me joining Sassin's soap and starting with clickbait, and then all of a sudden we're here at the end of like our second season recording together, but the third season of our show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I'm really looking forward to season two.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um I think I have ghosts.
SPEAKER_05I think you do have ghosts. Lisa's leg turned back on randomly.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna, you know, I'm just gonna shut it. And and and we'll just let the ghosts have it right now. Maybe, maybe it got too hot. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I see what you're saying.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're they're weird. I don't know, they're spoiled. But anyway, sorry, sorry, the ghost had me distracted. Um next time the episode, the final episode of season one is called knock knock. And next time you hear from us, um, we we may do a live on our week. Kate, hold on. I don't know what I was saying.
SPEAKER_01Um we're saying that next time we're gonna have like a live thing.
SPEAKER_05You heard her guys.
SPEAKER_00Next time we're gonna do a live thing. Yeah. You know, if if we're not having like too much fun all around Baltimore, yeah.
SPEAKER_05So next time we record, which may possibly be live for a finale, um, we would already have had our vacation.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05We planned many months ago that we may have mentioned like in a previous episode.
SPEAKER_00Or four, but yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Yeah. Uh so we'll be away for like four days in Maryland.
SPEAKER_00And and if and if nothing else, then just come back for the next pre-show for all the juicy or maybe not so juicy details. Who knows what'll happen.
SPEAKER_05Honestly, when you and I go somewhere, there's always a story to tell. I'm sure we're gonna have stories to tell.
SPEAKER_00Oh god. I kind of hope so. I kind of hope so.
SPEAKER_05Here's just some safe fun stories where none of us get hurt, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, where there's where there's no random kayaker walking up a dock or my god, yeah, yeah, where vacuum cleaners that appear out of nowhere, or chickens. Oh, the chickens were kind of cool, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I guess they were right.
SPEAKER_00Um, but yeah, if you um thanks, thanks again for sticking with us. And if you like what you've heard, listen some more. Yeah, um, consider subscribing, consider joining our Patreon, tell tell some friends if you have it in you, take one or two minutes. Leave us. Listen, you could just leave us a five-star review. You don't have to write anything. I mean, if you write something really cool or really funny, I'll read it on air if it makes me lol. But please just leave five stars.
SPEAKER_04Five stars would be nice, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Just just five stars. You can write whatever you want, just leave five stars.
SPEAKER_05Um, we come back from vacation, we're like getting settled in to like record the next episode, and all of a sudden we have like multiple five-star reviews, and our podcast goes up on the chart.
SPEAKER_00I have I I I've actually been thinking about an idea for a new podcast, but I won't say it on the air.
SPEAKER_05But will you say in the pre-show?
SPEAKER_00I might. Oh, I might. I have to I have to think it through a little more because I don't want anybody stealing my idea. But I'll tell you, and then once I know for sure, I'll talk about it in the pre-show.
SPEAKER_04Sounds like a plan. Maybe after vacation, I'll be solidified.
SPEAKER_00Okay, hopefully. Yeah, and then um, as as always, please don't drink and drive. Drink responsibly and go to assassinsips.com for all the extras.
SPEAKER_05And honestly, go to your local Treasure Joe's if they sell alcohol, go get that sangria, giant fucking bottle. Very good.
SPEAKER_00They're not even a sponsor.
SPEAKER_05No, nobody's a sponsor, but definitely worth mentioning. If you want a good summer drink, definitely recommend that. Or make your own sangria just for that. Elisa's is delicious.
SPEAKER_00Or pay me and I'll make it for you. Oh, that's true. Also, I make alcoholic cupcakes, FYI.
SPEAKER_05Yes, you do.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And did you have the one that I had delicious?
SPEAKER_00The Pina Colada one.
SPEAKER_05It kind of happened something like this. After we came back from your house that day, and we went back to Jeff's family's house. I think actually we went to my family's house first. Then we went to his family's house, but they were already sleeping. And I looked at Jeff and I was like, Can we have the cupcake now? And he was like, Yeah, let's have it. And it kind of just sat on the counter and we just like devoured it. And then we were like, wait, let's just do the shot instead of putting it in the cupcake. And I didn't realize how fast it squirts out. So it hit me in the back of the throat. But there was still enough left for Jeff. So he tried to hit him in the back of the throat. We're just like choking, laughing, and we're trying to be quiet, and it just wasn't happening. It was funny. It was great, but it was delicious.
SPEAKER_00So totally worth getting squirted.
SPEAKER_05I remember like eating the frosting and being like, shit, this is fucking good. It's not like frosting. Like, yeah, you're welcome. I mean, like, my biggest pet peeve out of everything is food that tastes too chemically. And like frosting, when you get it from like frosting on a cupcake or like a cake, especially cupcakes from like a bakery or especially like a grocery store bakery, just is so fucking chemically. And it's probably from like the food dives and stuff, but it just tastes fake and nasty. And I'm over that. Like, I'm just so over it. It's not worth eating it if I'm not gonna enjoy it.
SPEAKER_00So I'm not a big cake person. Really, the only cake that I like that like butt is BJ's, and it and it's like it it tastes homemade.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's like um there's this one cake that I had gotten from Whole Foods before. It um it's just like a vegan vanilla cake.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you know my cake wasn't vegan.
SPEAKER_05Oh no, no, no, and that's okay. I mean, like I eat non-vegan cake too. It's just I don't know, my family and I call it the gin cake because when my dad and I went to go pick it up the first time, like we were just looking at the bakery counter in Whole Foods, and it said vanilla nine-inch cake, but it said nine in, but the nine was kind of close at the bottom, so we thought nine with the curve at the bottom, I n spells gin. We were like we were eating the cake like on one of our birthdays. We're like, we don't taste the gin. It was a nine-inch round cake, we're just fucking idiots, so you were hoping, yeah. So now we call that gin cake, but okay, yeah, but yeah, it it actually is hard to find baked goods that don't taste like shit. Your respect tastes like shit.
SPEAKER_00Thank you.
SPEAKER_05You're welcome, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So hopefully one day that little side hustle takes off a little more.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but and it will because your food's delicious.
SPEAKER_00Okay, thank you. Until then, we'll just have to eat them.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm the horror. No problem with that at all. But until then.
SPEAKER_00Until next time. I'm Lisa. I'm Brittany, and we are out of here.
SPEAKER_05See you in the next episode, y'all. Bye.
SPEAKER_00Bye.
