SPEAKER_01

Hey and welcome to this episode of Sass and Sips, the podcast where Lisa and Brittany watch slash rewatch and drink and dissect the show and basically make fools of ourselves every week for your entertainment. Exactly that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So first things first, what are you drinking this week?

SPEAKER_00

I'm drinking my usual, which is my your bougie one, but delicious. Yes, my Pinot Grigio. Um I'm really settling into the suburbs drinking my Pinot Grigio.

SPEAKER_01

I guess I guess I'm a little bit behind you because I'm having my usual, my Shiraz. So I haven't I haven't done the Pinot Gris yet. So but yeah, I got my red one. Yeah, you got your white, I got my red. We're like a whole Billy Joel song over here.

SPEAKER_00

I was gonna say, I was gonna say whatever kind of mood you're in tonight.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. Well, this week we are gathered to uh celebrate Vivica St. John and the episode that is an open book and the most lionest title ever.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. No, this episode I feel like is really important so far, at least for season one. Like I would say, yes, there like so far there have been so many events that really open up that really open up the book to um our characters' lives.

SPEAKER_01

But I think there was a huge reveal at the end, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But I mean, like it's just like I feel like this episode really just everybody had an arc, like you really see an arc with David and Keith's story. You see an arc between um between Nate and right, yeah. I'm just fucking up my names right now.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, no, no, no, no. But like David and Keith have an important well, at least one, if if not two. I mean, I haven't seen the next episode, so I don't know how that works.

SPEAKER_00

Oh no, I'm talking just about this episode. Like, I feel like this right, but that's what I'm saying. So important for the series. David and Keith have a big moment, Nate and Brenda have a big moment, and Ruth and Claire have a big moment too, right?

SPEAKER_01

And so it was and we get some insight on Brenda.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we get a lot of more information about Brenda that really explains her behaviors that we've seen. And new characters, yes, Lisa's favorite new character.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, if if you didn't listen to the pre-show already, you might want to get my review on Jeremy Sisto's nipples, anyhow.

SPEAKER_00

Roll with the homies too hard, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

He could be my homie.

SPEAKER_00

I saw like as soon as he came in the scene, I was like, Oh my god, roll with the homie.

SPEAKER_01

You can't help it, yeah. And he was he was also in one of my um like weirdly favorite movies, and right now, for the life of me, it escapes me. The name of it, it was based on a book, and I can't I oh my god, I can't even like it's like oh this is this is one of your favorite movies, and you don't remember. Yeah, no, fuck it, I don't remember. Um, when I was younger, it was like where he can he can see the thoughts of this of the girl, and it was based on a book on um James Patterson book Dean Coon a Dean Coons book. It was based on a Dean Coons book, and I can't think of the name of the movie.

SPEAKER_00

He was a 13 interesting. I don't remember him in that. I'm looking him up on IMDb. All right, what's the name of the movie? Um, do you remember when it's from?

SPEAKER_01

It's it's like in the 90s, all right, possibly even the 80s.

SPEAKER_00

We have trash, the space between us, the 60s, real life, playing by heart, without limits, some girl, Bongwater, The Day Lincoln was shot, Oakland Underground, Three Woman of Pain. He was in Rugrats, uh, Super Side Kings, Duckman, Out of Order, White Squall, Moonlight and Valentino. He was in Clueless, the um Hideaway, the Shaggy Bay.

SPEAKER_01

Hideaway, hideaway, hideaway. It was that one. It was like, and it's so funny because I had seen the movie, and I was like, Oh, this movie is so freaky and so good, and I loved it. And then this is like even before I knew Alex, and Alex was a huge Dean Koons fan, and so he got me into reading the books, and that he like he had so many of them, and then I remember reading it, and I was like, wait a minute, wait, I've seen the movie, like the the one of the four movies I've ever seen in my life. I was like, I love that movie, but it also helps that he's in it, so yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Wait, hold on. On his iron on his IMDB credentials, it says that he was in the maroon five wake up call music video.

SPEAKER_01

All right, like no, that doesn't help. It's just like random, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That's so random. Like the shit that like he's in is just very random.

SPEAKER_01

All right, all right, Jeremy. Jeremy, just just know they they um, I mean, last year, obviously, they brought back the original Law and Order, and I mean it went off the air like 20 years ago. But the last two detectives that were on it were him and Anthony Anderson, and so then when I saw Anthony Anderson was coming back, I was like, oh, please, please, Detective Bernard is there? Come on, Detective Lupo. But he didn't come back.

SPEAKER_00

So he let me know. Yeah, he was only on for like three years of the show, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But I was like, oh man, so close. Got one, but not the other. Oh well, maybe he'll make a guest appearance at some point.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I'm sure they're gonna have to reference like his character in the show and where he went, right?

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I watched last season, but they they didn't really um they didn't talk about him. You know, but whatever. It is what it is.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, back to six feet under.

SPEAKER_01

Back to six feet under.

SPEAKER_00

So before our main character is six feet under, the episode opens on this aging snake fucking porn star. Yeah, you heard me. We find out later on in the episode what made our main character so famous, and it was her variety of adult videos, right? Um, and she's just about out as dated as her bathroom, like it it really opens and like she has that like pink tile wall in her bathroom, and it's like it's super just right. I feel like her bathroom, which is the only room we get to see her in, just really speaks for her personality.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, I feel like it definitely was a metaphor.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, for sure, for sure. And so she's having this conversation, but like you can't see who it's with. Um, about her upcoming date. We find out that she's talking to her cat. I thought that was really, really cute. Um, and she's like her cat's like her confidant, and it seems like great relationship up until the fact of um he accidentally knocked her curlers into her bathtub while she was in it.

SPEAKER_01

And and the best part was like she's having this conversation with him, talking about how she's gonna listen to him this time when he doesn't like a date. And she tells him, Aren't you so glad I rescued you? And then he knocks curlers into the bathtub. Yeah, he was like, That's my answer. It's like um, I know we still have okay. Side note, because like I'm sorry, I got Jeremy's sister on the brain. But side note, I know we still we've had to push um Charlie work to the back burner. I was thinking about that the other day. Okay, yeah, but also maybe we could do like hideaway. Oh, that would be because like also Alicia Silverstone is in there and Jeff Goldblum. Who doesn't love Jeff Goldblum?

SPEAKER_00

That's so weird. I don't realize a national treasure. Wait, that movie, so they were in like two movies together in the same year. That's weird. Is I don't know they were both filmed in 95. I could double check because it both the tab open. Yeah, so I guess so. I know Clueless was in '95, and I know it was in high school when Clueless came out.

SPEAKER_01

I don't remember like what year.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I only remember because it was the year that I was born, so I always remember that. But yeah, no, Hideaway and Clueless are literally like back to back. Um wow, yeah, that's weird.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I never realized that they were the same year. Look at that. Yeah, I always thought Hideaway was older, but all right, I'll stop interrupting.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe like three months older.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, way older.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, super, super. Um, and so our main character, she gone.

SPEAKER_01

She gone, she electricity and the curlers, they done killed her, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And so after this scene, we're at the church with David and Ruth, and Dave is presented with the opportunity of becoming a deacon, which like was really interesting, but the scene is cut short by our favorite character that just keeps bombarding our scenes, our David scenes, and she has a name this time. Yeah, the one obsessed with death and funerals, and like the one who kind of gets off on like different ways of trying. Yeah, funerals, yeah. Her name's Tracy Montrose Blair, yeah, and once again, just like the past couple scenes that we've seen her in, she's just blatantly hitting on David, and he's just like, I'm taken, and she's like, How? And he's like, I'm engaged, and she's like, Oh, and she's like, They're all either taken or gay, and and thank god you're not gay, right? And she it was just funny because, like, in the scene, like it's just really funny because he's presented with like this church opportunity, and the church obviously doesn't accept gays, and then she's like, and thank god you're not gay, and it's just it's all still surrounding his sexuality.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, every time something comes up around him, it's it always seems like that's the gist of it, is like, or worse, gay, you know, yeah, which like again, I don't know if this is because of the times and how like because this was like it's disgusting, but like because when this was filmed, it was kind of taboo for like the gay community, it was kind of taboo. Not really, I mean, yes and no, okay, but but you know what out as it is now. Okay, I also could be jaded because I grew up in New York City, I worked in Chelsea, I worked in the West Village. I was I went to a very liberal high school. It just it was just all around me, it never phased me. So for me, I mean I worked in Chelsea.

SPEAKER_00

I know it's like we're out of bed queens all day, like nothing bothered, but I I straight people were the minority, so it wasn't like it just wasn't a thing to me.

SPEAKER_01

So maybe maybe I'm misremembering because I didn't have that experience of maybe somebody else who wasn't exposed to it, who who didn't who didn't just accept it as like this is just life and that's it, like no harm, no foul, like whatever. It's it a person's sexual orientation being different than yours is the same thing as somebody having a different hair color than yours. Like it just is what it is, and that's what makes us different, but not better or worse.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, no, like you know what I mean. Like, but this was also around the same time. Now, Lisa knows, but I don't think you guys know. Um, at the same time, I've been really like deep diving into Will and Grace. It's like my my background noise show. And so, like, as I'm like prepping for my classroom, just you know, fucking designing and laminating, like I need something to watch, or else I'm just gonna bang my head against the wall and stick my hand in the laminator. So and then I'll be six feet under. Maybe you need a Tito. Yeah, yeah, you know, just like accelerate it. So um, as I'm watching Will and Grace, like I I had mentioned this to Lisa, like I don't know, like a couple of weeks ago. And you had said to me that Will and Grace is kind of iconic because it's Will and Grace had the first um manual die, yeah, scene on TV.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, a national, national like broadcast TV, like regular TV. I don't I can't speak for cable, I don't know, but like regular TV channel four, NBC.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. But HBO isn't regular TV, and Six Feet Under is on regular TV. So the fact that, like to have like Keith and David kiss, I mean, like like they had a kiss in this episode, which is fine. Um I if I remember right, they've had a kiss before. Yeah, pretty I I feel like in every episode. The fact for it to only be able to be shown on HBO and not like if Six Feet Under was on like NPC or something, like right, like that couldn't have happened. They they would have had to not film that scene. Um, or it would have been like a big fucking thing. Like, that's that's why I say it was taboo at the time because comparing this show to other shows that are on TV and how the critics and the and society handled a show with like that also had like a gay like plot line. That's that's the only reason why I mentioned that.

SPEAKER_01

Um and Willie Grace is a lot a lot more um like I mean comical is is so like obvious, but it's like extra. Yeah, I was gonna say you're like Keith and David are like a real right, exaggerated, thank you. Yeah, Keith and David are like two real people in a relationship, whereas yeah, Will is kind of like your average guy, but Jack is just out there and ridiculous.

SPEAKER_00

Will is definitely like average but eccentric, and Jack is like eccentric, you know. So Jack is just like just Jack 2004. Oh my god, Jack talk. I'm up to Jack talk, so yeah. I'm like I'm in season eight, I'm about to end the series and then I'm gonna watch the new one, but or the reboot, I mean, but um okay.

SPEAKER_01

So did you see the episode? Now I can tell you. Did you see the episode when with okay? Do you know who Lorraine is? The Stan's mistress? Yeah, okay. Did you see that episode with where Karen and uh Rosie? What is her name? Yeah, Rosie. Yeah, but that's not like her that's her nickname, but okay, but anyway, Rosalita.

SPEAKER_00

No, Rosario, Rosario, Rosario, thank you. Okay, I don't know why.

SPEAKER_01

And they're on the boat, right? And then they get like pushed over.

SPEAKER_00

I love it, and they're like, the tide is high, but okay, anyway, okay, so but then they get pushed over filling his ashes, and they were like the pieces of rice crispy in there.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god. They end up getting like knocked off the boat, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

The yacht. Yeah, the yacht.

SPEAKER_01

Sorry, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, how did that episode end? Um, it was a two-parter, and so that was towards the end. And Will, Jack, and Grace were just dancing inside with the music on because Grace was upset because her husband was supposed to come on the boat, but he was doing doctors without borders, but he left his bag on the boat, and there was a note in it from the duck from the female doctor that he was going with saying, like, like professing her love to him. And Grace was like, Oh my gosh, she's gonna try to make a move on my husband.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, wait, hold on. How does the episode end for Karen and Rosario?

SPEAKER_00

They were in the water, and then what? And then the next episode, um they were picked up by a fishing boat, and it was something about like something about like German soldiers on the boat, or some like foreign soldiers on the boat, and she won in a game of cards against them, or some some Karen shit, like some trait that she had that we didn't know about that she pulls out, and that's how they were able to escape. So, like she bet like their lives on like them bringing them back. Like, if I won this game, like I like they would bring me to you guys, see or something like that.

SPEAKER_01

Now, I could very well be wrong, but I remember watching that episode in real time when it was on, yeah. And I remember when they got picked up by the boat, they were like, Wait, but where are we? And then they realized that it was like Russians, and the butt boat was filled with vodka, and Carmen was like saved, like I don't and that's not there anymore.

SPEAKER_00

Showing the boat, I think it was Russians.

SPEAKER_01

That's I I knew it was when I rewatched, I did a rewatch before the the reboot, yeah, like the reboot, yeah, and it wasn't there, like that episode was different, and I was like, wait a minute, that's not right. That's that's not what I remember. Like, I remember her sitting with like yes, with like a blanket around her and like these crates of vodka.

SPEAKER_00

She'd be like, I don't want to go back to the office. That's what I'm saying, right?

SPEAKER_01

So she was like, my camera was in heaven, like a boat filled with Russian vodka, like maybe smuggling or whatever, but like the point was that it was like Russian and vodka, yeah, and then it wasn't there anymore. No, and so I'm like, what happened? Did I make this memory up?

SPEAKER_00

No, maybe they they probably cut it out. It's so weird.

SPEAKER_01

I went on like this whole deep dive trying to find it, and I couldn't, and then I really felt like, am I crazy? Because I remember this, but maybe it really didn't happen. I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

I'll ask my mom tomorrow. I know she watched it like originally when I aired like the whole thing. Um, maybe she remembers that scene because my mom was asking me something about like um, and where's Stan? And I was like, Oh, he died, and she's like, Okay, and now I understand why she was just like, Okay, because like he's not dead. Uh I ain't saying nothing, you're not finished. No, no, no, no. Like he was alive the whole time, like he got into like some trouble with the mafia or some shit. Yeah, Karen's just like forgiving him now, like from what I'm watching. But anyway, back to the actual show. I know. I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_01

No, we were like, we're gonna be concise, we're gonna be good.

SPEAKER_00

We're not, we never are. My only point of bringing that up was just to talk about like maybe they have focused David's whole fucking plot about his sexuality because sexuality was like, well, having like um like being gay was just like like a big like thing that nobody really talked about, although a lot of people were like it wasn't publicized, and so even though, like in our lives now, like this is just like literally like oh okay, you're wearing a blue shirt today, cool, and you're gay, cool. Like it's nothing major at all. It was like something major then. But I feel like so exaggerated because it's like so like, oh my god, like a church boy who's also gay, and it's like nobody fucking cares about that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and like, but the thing is that they lived in California, so you'd think like they lived in Los Angeles, you'd think that it wouldn't be a thing. But I'm sorry. But maybe maybe it was more of a thing for the audience, if that makes sense. Like maybe it was written for the audience instead of for the people who lived along the coastlines. Exactly. Yeah. You know, because the rest of the country was not as progressive. I mean, like the progressive. That's a nice, that's a better word than I was gonna say.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. Yeah. I mean, like, sorry. I mean, like, if you weren't like Miami, if you weren't Brooklyn, or if you weren't like Los Angeles, like you know, or like San Francisco, like you you really like thought of it as something like abnormal, and I'm sure many of them still do, yeah. But I mean, like, now it's kind of like there are less that think abnormal. Are there though? Well, you know what I mean. Like, I mean, it's the fact that back then, like, marriage wasn't even legal.

SPEAKER_01

Well, but that right, so the marriage wasn't legal. I'm pretty sure the army was still doing like their whole don't ask, don't tell, which is basically part of this episode. So there was a lot more barriers in place, whereas now, I mean, you're still gonna have your people who are just like ignorant and intolerant and whatever, but by law, the laws have changed, so you can't legally discriminate, exactly, and that's my point.

SPEAKER_00

Like, we're in much different times, and so like it wasn't like for now, for now, oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, you know, Roe v. Way is already overturned, so who knows what's next?

SPEAKER_00

We're both like pretty much shaking our head, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Because the next thing you know, like we'll we'll be back to not being able to vote, and and God knows what else. Yeah, we'll be we'll be in the next season of the handmaid's tale. Praise be under his eye. Oh, that's starting soon.

SPEAKER_00

Handmaid's tale, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

The next the the new season. Oh, maybe if we finish this by the time this episode comes out, it will have already come out, but I'm not ready to watch that yet.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I have not started that show yet.

SPEAKER_01

I need to oh it it's okay, it really is so good. I made Alex watch it. He watched a few episodes in the first season and he was like so pissed off. He was like, How do you watch this?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, okay. I was gonna say, is this like a Britney show or a Britney and Jeff show?

SPEAKER_01

Well, he was pissed off, and he's just like, This makes me angry. How do you watch it? I was like, Well, if you're not angry, you're not paying attention. That's the point. You know, yeah, he's like, I can't do it. This shit is pissing me off. I was just fucking watch the show. Like, you just watch the show. The first episode is a little rough, you know. There's a there's like a lot to take in, but it's an excellent show, it really is. I think we're on season five. Where five is starting, yeah. Wow, so I I'm gonna have to watch like rewatch a few episodes from the last season before I can watch season five. I just don't have time for it yet.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, maybe like over Thanksgiving break. I feel like that's well for me. I'm thinking in terms of like when is the next time I could breathe?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but plus Hulu doesn't put out the whole season at once. Hulu does week by week.

SPEAKER_00

You're right. There was actually there's a new show that's on Hulu that like there's like three episodes up of it. Um, Tell Me Lies.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I saw that. I mean, I didn't watch it, but like I saw the the promo for it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was interesting, but I watched all three. Yeah, okay, so it's based on a book. Um, and then because like I know I'm not gonna have time to finish the series or like wait, um, I just like read the spoilers of the book, so I know but um it's really good though.

SPEAKER_01

It's it's eventually I added it to my list. Eventually I'll get there.

SPEAKER_00

I today is like a producer, it's interesting.

SPEAKER_01

Today I watched Jeffrey Epstein Filthy Rich. Oh it was on on Netflix, it was like four episodes though. Yeah, was it I watched that? It was interesting. Um, what I liked about it is that it was more focused on the survivors and their stories, and and they got a chance to uh use their voice more so than just kind of like, oh Jeffrey Epstein, Jeffrey Epstein, he's this and he's that. It was it was more like a platform for them to be able to share and and tell their stories and and how they feel about everything. But it was interesting, you know, like you've heard all the stories and this and that, but it was nice to I guess put faces and and to see these women actually come out and and tell their story.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. I mean, like having telling a story from a survivor standpoint instead of a factual standpoint is so much more powerful. Me coming from my Holocaust background, um, it's definitely valued so much more now. And I think just that um any account of any kind of event, like factual information, we will have all the facts, yes, but like you really learn through how other people emotionally experience something. Um, I mean, even like physically experience something, like you you learn through others' experiences. You don't really need to know the facts per se, but knowing how people felt in that situation tells so much. Exactly, yeah. So that's that I like that the documentary or the like the the docuseries kind of expository series, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And it was that it was nice, like it was four episodes, so it wasn't too long, and it it gave you enough, you know.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, but anyway, getting back to six feet under. I know, sorry, no, no, no, no, it's four hours later, yeah. Right, so anyway, getting back to David getting the opportunity to become deacon, like he was just presented with the opportunity at this point, and Tracy Montrose Blair is there hitting on him as clear as day, and he's literally like no, and she's like, Yes. And after like their whole thing, when I think this may be their last encounter, I do not remember, but it seems like it was set up for this to be their last encounter because he shut her down. Um, Ruth is like, I like her, and he's like, She's crazy, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Ruth is like, I think she's nice, and David's like, I think she's crazy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and obviously we know who's right. Yeah, seriously, yeah. So moving along to David, uh, not David, uh, Nate and Brenda's story. Nate meets Brenda at her parents' house while they're away. Brenda says that her parents are away for the weekend. We could surmise it's Sunday at this point because she's in the pool, which is super, super warm. Um, and he's like, it's cold outside, and he dips his hand in the pool and he's like, it's like a hot tub in here. So he jumps into the pool, and we we know it's the end of the weekend because, like, as they're like making out and doing whatever in the pool, her parents come home and just stand right like on the tip of the pool and start having a conversation with them.

SPEAKER_01

It's just like watching them making out, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And she's like, Brenda just turns around and she's like, I thought you said you were gonna be gone for the whole weekend. And the people who walk in, who we find out are her parents, are just like, Well, it's the end of the weekend, so now we're home. And it was such like a strange dynamic between Brenda and like these two adults, which yes are her parents.

SPEAKER_01

And wait, yeah, before, but before they come in, um, you know, Brenda tells him to join him in the pool. So, like, you just see his pile of clothes, and then they're in the pool and they're just like making out and whatnot. And he tells her that she scares him, yes, and and that's when she says, I'm an open book, liar. Whoa, you're an open book, sure, sure.

SPEAKER_00

Only if you have like the book and you open it, yeah, which we'll we'll definitely get to, and maybe that's what she was referring to too when she said that line. Because she maybe she she's a smarty, she's she's a smartyman. She well, she is, yeah, I know it. So anyway, they're just like, and who's this?

SPEAKER_01

And she's like, Parents, this is the man that I'm having sex with, yeah, and that's the first time she does that, like where she just makes I don't even want to say derogatory, but like a like an offhand comment, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, that that it's it's pretty much like this is Brenda, like whatever's on your own, song your tongue, like she's just saying it as it is, which is just really like funny, but it's funny because it's like just so unsettling because it's like everybody knows this, but nobody says it, and she's saying it, and it's just it's it's funny because she's just not afraid at all, she doesn't care. Um, and so like Brenda Flat leaves Nate in the pool talking to her parents, he's naked, and they're just sitting there like waiting for him to get out of the pool.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think he was naked because like she gets out and walks in the house. Yeah, and and he's just like stuck in the pool now, talking to these people.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because there's she's gone, yeah. Like the end of like Nate's conversation with her parents, like her parents were like, You need to come for dinner right night. And he was like, Sure, okay, we'll we'll pick a day, or like something like that. And then normally in that situation, like the people would walk away and like Nate would get out of the class, but instead they just sat down like on the lounge chairs next to the pool and just kind of like sat and cocked their head at him, just looked at him. Yeah, and it was like just so weird. But then immediately the scene changes, and we see Claire and Ruth seeing Claire's school therapist who can't seem to get straight what Claire had told them. Seriously, like he does not have his shit together, but you know what? I sympathize with him. Schools are fucking chaotic, especially when you're a specialist and you don't just work in one school, you work in all the schools in the district, and every day you're at a new school, or half the day you're at one school and half the day you're another school. So I sympathize with him, but he's frazzled, and he has a caseload of most likely over a thousand students, most likely over two thousand students. We're talking about Los Angeles, and he's like Claire Who? So they're just like sitting there, like Ruth and Claire in the school psych. Um, yeah, the school psychologist, the school therapist's office, just they're just waiting for the session to be over.

SPEAKER_01

And so because everything he says, Claire basically contradicts.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And it's just like this is just the start of their breakthrough. Like, first it starts with them confronting the issue, and they both like like it's this isn't helping. And so we'll see later on, like what Ruth does. But in the meantime, David meets with Larry in regards to the funeral service for Vivicta St. John. That's how you say her name, right?

SPEAKER_01

Vivica. St.

SPEAKER_00

Vivica. I don't know what words. Vivica. I was like, I'm looking at her name and I'm like, Vivica? Vivica. Yeah. Vivica St. John. It doesn't even sound like a porn star name. It sounds like a what are they called? Not nuns. Like an heiress. Um wait, hold up. They're not nuns, they're not priests. What are they? Um like Saint Anthony, like those, like saints, like a saint name? Like obviously it says saint, but it sounds like something innocent. I don't know. Vivica St. John. Sounds like someone you would pray to. I bet people did.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but they did. They called out her name.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. And um, and so that's when we find out like what kind of service is being planned. And this isn't your average funeral. Like, they're they they got the money on the table and they're they're willing to spend a lot, which is great for the funeral home. Being that in the last episode or two, like, especially when like Ruth starts like um like taking her money from the will and like investing it into the funeral home. Um, we find out something about like the air conditioning unit or like the fact that they need air conditioning installed or something like that.

SPEAKER_01

Well, then in either the last episode or the one before it, the air conditioned went, so they had to get it fixed. So, you know, that's that's a bill that they have to pay. And late later on in the episode, like when Ruth is just completely horrified over this funeral.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, because she has no clue that this is going on.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but David, um, sorry, Nate reminds her that that they're gonna clear, you know, a good amount of money and it's gonna help pay for it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so this is win-win for everybody except for Ruth.

SPEAKER_01

Except for Ruth. Yeah, except for Ruth. Well, because she she walks in on them talking about like blowjobs and shit, and she's just like, Yeah, I saw her. She's just like, What is this? Is this a prostitute? He's like, No, she's an adult film star.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, she's an actress for adult films, but it's such a nice way.

SPEAKER_01

Brenda would have been like, No, she's just a fuck puppet, but yeah, she's she's a snake fucking dirty guy, fuck puppet, whatever it is.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. Um, yeah, so this is about the time when like her body's downstairs and Frederico's like beginning to work on it, and Nate comes downstairs and he's like, Oh my gosh, well in doubt. Or so he makes a comment like that, and Frederico's like, I know. And then he's like, Yeah, but the nipples are kind of like just not really like in line and like kind of like full because like one bulb is straight and one is like off to the left. Yeah, I think he's like really calls them like torpedo boobs or something like that.

SPEAKER_01

And he's like, and they want her to wear this low-cut dress and no bra. He's like, But they're hard as a rock.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, that's that's what he said. He was like, feel them, they're hard as a rock.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and and then like they're they're realizing that they they they know her from somewhere, they're like, she looks so familiar, but they can't really place it. David comes down and says her name, yes, yeah, and they realize she's a porn star, and they're like, Oh, yeah, she did this and she did that. And and David is just a legend, she fucked a snake, yeah. And David's just like, Yeah, I don't know. And they're like, You never saw her videos? He's like, No, 30 minute ones and she was on the diving boy, and they were lined up around the pool.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god. Is going on on David's just like, ew, I'm almost. Yeah, that was our word of the day in class today. I've been reading, I have the book literally right in front of me. We've been reading Juni B first grader, two plus wonder, right?

SPEAKER_01

And um, yeah, like Judy B. Jones.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. I took this one from the school library, and so we're reading it to talk about what good readers do and like the skills that they need to have when they're reading. And in the book, like one of the skills they need to find is like um, like I want them to question what they're reading. And so while I was reading, one of the lines of the book was like Genie B's dad saying, like, oh, I'm repulsed. And one of my kids immediately raised their hand. They're like, What does repulse mean? And I'm like, You're doing what good readers do, you're asking questions, and so but because I am like a team teacher, I need to teach, like I only teach um literacy, and which is like reading writing, reading writing phonics. And so, like, I do that in the morning, I switch classes with my team teacher, and I do all the same lessons in the afternoon. So I've been talking about the word repulse a lot today, and I just saw an opportunity to use it, and I'm like, there we go. Yeah, bonus points, yeah, bonus points for me, even though you know I know the word. Um anyway, anyway, but speaking of Ruth, um, Ruth makes an attempt to bond with Claire by making it a blockbuster night, which you know, what a throwback, right? Right, right. Yeah, she's like, I have the nutty professor and I have um the the princess bride, right? No, yeah, no shit. What was the other movie? It was like literally the nutty professor or the princess bride, 100%. No, yeah, definitely not. Hold up. I have the episode up on my phone. I remember that because I was like, oh, that's what made me really remember this episode. Because at first I was struggling to remember it, and that was like my first indicator. I was like, Oh, that's where I know like nutty professor or princess bride from something like that. This is me playing the episode, fam.

SPEAKER_01

I I don't think it was the princess bride. I don't know, I feel like it was Runaway Bride, Runaway Bride, and the Nutty Professor.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I knew it was something with a bride. I thought it was Princess Bride, sorry. Yeah, Runaway Bride. I don't know that movie.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I think that's with Julia Roberts, if I'm not mistaken.

SPEAKER_00

I think, but anyway, yeah, and so they end up watching Nutty Professor, which is just like a lot of farting scenes, and they're sitting there. Claire's just like uncomfortably laughing, not because she's uncomfortable about the movie, she's uncomfortable about her mom's reaction.

SPEAKER_01

I just can't stop laughing.

SPEAKER_00

She is laughing as if she smoked before watching it. Like, she is just like she she can't contain herself, she's got the giggles, like it was it was hilarious. And Ruth is just like, What is this? A show about flatulence or like some bullshit like that, yeah. And they turn it off, and then they actually um Claire starts just telling Ruth, like she's pretty much like, I don't know what you're trying to do here, but if you're trying to have like that mother-daughter relationship with me, like they do in the shows, just know that's never gonna happen because that's not real.

SPEAKER_01

Well, she admits because I forgot exactly how it came up, but it the whole thing with the foot comes up and and Claire just has like that outburst, and she's like, Do you want to know what happened? and she tells her what happened, but and then Ruth is just yeah, because she's because she says that a guy that she thought liked her, fooled her into having sex, and then told the whole school how she sucked his toes.

SPEAKER_00

And so, and then he had no remorse for what he did. So when she saw the opportunity that Nate dropped the foot, she took it not because she like has a fascination with dead people's feet, but only just to get revenge.

SPEAKER_01

Get back on him, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And she later on points out in the episode when they're talking to the school psychologist again, I think, with oh no, she was just talking to her mom again at the end of the episode. They had like a bit of a breakthrough, and she was like, It's not the fact that I took the foot, it's the fact that there's a just like a foot for me to take out, yeah. And I think that puts it in perspective for Ruth that it's like she's just so used to this funeral industry that she's so like desensitized, yeah. And I think she doesn't realize like how obscure it is anymore, right?

SPEAKER_01

But I mean, even in that first moment, Ruth is a little taken aback by her admission, and then Claire, it seems like Claire realizes exactly what just came flying out of her mouth, and then she goes into her whole, you know what? Like, we're never gonna have that relationship, so just forget it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because her mom, like out of that whole thing, her mom was like, You're having sex, you're having sex, yeah. She's like, you know what? And then she was like, We're never gonna have that relationship because that shit's not real, like, whatever. Yeah, yeah. And the the cutest scene happened next. It was literally like the one may say boring, I say adorable. So in the next scene. We have David and Keith again. They're doing the cutest shit and they're just like literally eating Chinese food watching Oz.

SPEAKER_01

And HBO, I guess, needed a little bit more publicity for its other show. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So meta promote their own shows. It's cute. Yeah, yeah. It's like they have their own fucking little universe. And and Lisa Lisa made a connection in this scene and she put it in our notes. Lisa, you want to go off?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I wrote Christopher Maloney, aka Stabler, aka I have a Law and Order obsession.

SPEAKER_00

This is not the first time we're talking about Law and Order. No episode.

SPEAKER_01

No, and it will not be the last.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_01

I have hung up on people to watch my episodes. I love that. That's I love Law and Honor.

SPEAKER_00

That shows your dedication to TV on our podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'm a dedicated member of you know the TV club. Of the wow, they're gonna revoke my card. I've been drinking a lot. Uh the elite. Wow, why can't I remember? Dedicated members of the elite squad. Anyway, let's let's move on before I make more of an ass out of myself. Because I can't remember what the title card says.

SPEAKER_00

We both just that's okay. Oh, and so David and Keith are discussing David's deaconship and like what that would mean for their relationship. Um, in this scene, I don't know why I thought it was the funniest thing, probably because I'm delirious. Um Keith proposes the idea of you like he he turns to David and he's like, you know how I'm part of that like gay firefighters and police league or like club or something like that, or gathering committee. And David's like, yeah, and he's like, Well, we're doing a thing in Laguna over the weekend, and um, I want you to come and be my guest. And so David's like, David went to go say, like, oh, or like he's he was like, I think it's gonna be like a dance or something. He's like, Are you gonna get me a croissage? But David says, Wasage like croissant, and I lost my shit. Like, I had a rewind. I heard it again, I lost my shit. I thought that was so funny. He's like, Are you gonna get me a croissage?

SPEAKER_01

Anyway, um, but they're so cute in this scene because they're talking about it, and Keith straight up asks him, you know, why, and he's like, Well, you know, be good for business, basically. And Keith is kind of cool with it, and he's just like, Oh, like it's kind of sexy, you know, man of the cloth, and forgive me, I'm about to sin. And and even David is like, you know, I know that's something that has traditionally been our day, but but Keith is like, you know, it's it's cool, like if that if that's what you want to do, I support you. You know, just that's the bottom line, even though it later on it's it's not all hunky dory, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like you could tell Keith is like really like repressing his feelings in that moment, and he just really is focusing on David's happiness. But that excuse me, that like quickly that quickly turns, yeah. But we're gonna have to say that like a minute because we gotta talk about Nate and Brenda again.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So you remember when like Nate's parents were like, come over for dinner, and he's like, Okay, and then they just like stared at him until I'm sure he got out of the pool naked and got dressed right in front of them.

SPEAKER_01

Right. And at some point they called him, yeah, and they're like, We're not gonna take no for an answer. Okay, you know they had to have gotten his number from Brenda, yeah. And so he agrees, and now he and now the night has come, he shows up to their house to for dinner. Except when he asks when Brenda's getting there, they're like, Oh, yeah, she's not coming.

SPEAKER_00

They're like, She didn't tell you. What the fuck? Yeah, and it was just like their whole thing was weird. The way that they were talking were weird, like was weird to him because their body language was so off, like they were very cold. The couch, I really took a notice to the couch. Yes, I don't know why. Like, okay, so um her mom was sitting on the couch when Nate arrived, and so like the end of the she's like half laying on the couch, yeah. But the couch was like very, very taut leather without any like cushion to it. No, no, it was like super wide. The house was just so cold, and I think people have furniture like that. It really like like sterile looking. That's exactly that's the best way to say it like sterile in style, yeah. Thank you. Yeah, like it was just very you know, in that scene, I was like, what she has said about her parents so far rings true. I don't think that she is making up anything about her parents, and it doesn't really seem like that because like they're literally like saying all their big psychology words, and they're talking about like, oh, that's her typical behavior, and they're talking about like when her brother was born, and in their in the midst of their conversation, like while they were at dinner, we'll skip ahead a little bit just to finish talking about them. Nate turns to them and says, you know, I I have to ask, like, what's the significance of the name Nathaniel? Right. And they both look at each other, and then like immediately, like the scene changes to them in the house. And Brenda's mom takes out this book called Nathaniel and Isabella, or Isabelle and Nathaniel, whatever. And they explain that Brenda used to read these when she was little, and um, they're like British storybooks, and so I I guess like child regulation laws like aren't as strict as they were in the United States, and so like a lot of things were in like it was like almost like um like the grim fairy tales, right? Um, like how they're like dark, and so and then they're like modified in the United States because different culture, like we we just censor a lot of stuff. So they were basically saying, like, she was exposed to all this shit when she was little, she was reading these when she was three because she was reading fluently at three.

SPEAKER_01

Hey, my daughter learned how to read at three, and she taught herself, and yet nobody wrote a book about her.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and that's the thing too. And so they were saying something about like, oh, and it's in the book, and he's like, It's in this, like children's book, and they were like, She didn't tell you, and I know all this sounds confusing, but basically, because Brenda was like a kid genius, and she has like an IQ of like 138 or some shit like that.

SPEAKER_01

Um, and her parents are like I don't know, I don't know what a high IQ is, but apparently she has one, whatever it is.

SPEAKER_00

Average is 100. That's the like I would say um a bell curve, like low would be like 70, average would be like 90 hundred, and high would be like 120. Okay, yeah, that's how I understood IQ tests, but I'm also trying to remember from like I don't know, like eight years ago when I studied this. So my memory is very off. So forgive me if I'm wrong. But uh from what I understand, between 90 of a hundred ninety and a hundred is like wow, like you you're like in calculus, you understand that, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_01

Or like physics, they also tell him that like where where she's concerned that there's no accidents, that she's a master manipulator, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I feel like we've seen this, yeah, like with the bus thing, like when she put David and Nay on the bus that hid into their dad.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, and I feel like we're about to see it again in an upcoming scene.

SPEAKER_00

Well, we basically just saw it in this scene. I mean, like if she set this up, like, and she knew what he was going into, and she knew that like he thought that she was gonna be there and she wasn't gonna be there, she just manipulated that situation right to expose her to expose him to her parents because she knew that the book would get brought up anyway, and so she's like, let him learn from my parents and then come back to me, right?

SPEAKER_01

But I mean more so like afterwards when he goes to her house to her apartment afterwards, but we're not there yet, because she totally fucking manipulates him there, yeah, yeah, you're right. You want to do that, or do you want to keep going like chronologically? No, no, no, we'll go back, we'll stop there. And so basically, with it makes you wonder which which parental dinner was worse, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

No, I I just think this was so off-putting.

SPEAKER_01

Like it was it was yeah, yeah, yeah. Like just no matter how awkward it was for like Ruth to walk in on them. I mean, could you imagine just showing up for dinner at what you perceive to be like your girlfriend or your sick significant other, and then like to come to find out that they're not gonna even be there and and they didn't bother to tell you, yeah, that's awful.

SPEAKER_00

That's a situation that's like stepping in dog shit and then like going to an interview. Like it's just terrible. So now we know that there's a whole like psychological journal written about Brenda specifically, but it's not really like a journal, it's like a published book about like her, but it's called something else. It doesn't matter.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's called um I forgot what it's called, something light and dark.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes, it's it's like light and dark, a child's view on something.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and they use a different name, but I can't remember the name, me either, but it doesn't, it's not important right now, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Which is like for this episode, which is fine. So Nate's learning a lot about Brenda from her parents, which isn't the best, but seems like that was the only way he was gonna learn. Yeah, going back to David, David's sitting in his interview for his deaconhood, and he's literally lying about everything. He's lying about why he wants a job, he's lying about like his faith and or his his true belief in God, and then right at the end of the interview, it gets so fucking awkward when it's almost like a petty fucking standoff between like the interviewer and deacon, and he's like, he says something like, Um, is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself? Yeah, and he's like, Is there anything else you'd like to ask me about myself? And he's like, No, I think we're done here. And he was just like, you could tell that they were like just having a communication between their eyes, and they both understood and it was fine. And I think David's understanding and what he's like talk to keep about is the fact that it seems like everybody in the church is gay anyway.

SPEAKER_01

They're just they can't say I I'm pretty sure that the other guy who referred him for deaconship is but the other the the old fuddy duddy is like this is a conservative church and no boat rocking, and you can't have this position for business, and it's like that's everything that David is and wants, exactly, yeah, and so this is like don't ask don't tell all over again.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, talk about manipulator, but um after the botched movie night that Claire and Ruth had, they go to Claire's cousin's house, and the way Ruth presents this to Claire is by literally barging in her room, she's like, pack your stuff, we're going to your cousin Jenny's house. And she's like, I was just like, but I'm doing homework, and she's like, I don't care. And she's like, I have school tomorrow. She's like, I'll write a note, and she slams her door. And the next scene with Claire and Ruth, they're literally at her aunt, um, her aunt's house, and so her cousin Jenny's house. Right, right, right. Cousin Jenny's a year older than Claire, or two than Claire.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so she's in college, so she's at at least a year, I guess, older.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, she's a freshman at college, she goes to local college, so that's why she could live at home because she loves her mom, she's not afraid to say it, and the relationship is very pretty.

SPEAKER_01

Nauseating, it's nauseating, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It it's made to be nauseating, like they're very much. Um they they have like a very dependent relationship, and in like a cutesy way that would get you really nauseous, and it's almost as if Ruth was saying to Claire, like, I'm just trying to get to know you, but we could be like this, and Claire immediately understands. And Claire and Ruth are just making jokes about them, like in front of them, bonding, and then Jenny's mom. So, like Claire's aunt, and I think it's Ruth's sister, maybe.

SPEAKER_01

I think it's her cousin, I think they're all cousins.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, so um, she tries to compare Ruth's situation with like her deceased husband, with this woman tries to compare it to her husband leaving her, right? And Ruth puts her in her place, and she's like, But you see, you can always visit your husband, like he's not gone forever.

SPEAKER_01

And when he's married, like he he didn't die, he left. Yeah, and I like that for Ruth.

SPEAKER_00

I think it was great that Ruth said that whole line, and you could tell she got Tyrion there too. So, like it was emotionally really, really hard to go through that, but it's something that Ruth just needs to say over and over, almost like it was almost like therapeutic for her to say that, you know.

SPEAKER_01

And I like when they were playing Scrabble. I mean, because like when when they get there, they eat in KFC and and they're like, Oh my god, we would never eat this meal. I'm so glad you came. We're gonna have to do an extra spinning class. Like, shut the fuck up.

SPEAKER_00

So like valley gross.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but then when they're playing Scrabble after dinner, Claire plays the word hell, and Ginny turns it into hello, and then Ruth plays a word, and Ginny's like, is that a real word? And so she says yes, and and she says what it means, and then Claire makes a joke. And I love I loved that moment because Ruth looks at her and is and you can just see that they're in on it together, and they and they appreciate each other in that moment, and it's it's nice, you know, for change that they're not bigger at odds.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you could see that they definitely were on the same side about it, and you see it as the scene at the cousin's house finishes up, which is pretty much them saying, I think a good idea is for you to come to us. Um, let me start there again, for you to come with us to spin class tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. And Ruth wakes Claire up before 6 a.m. and says, pretty much like we gotta get the fuck out of here. Like unless you want to go to spin class at 6 a.m. Get the keys, get your shit, and let's sneak out and Ruth and Claire sneak out of the house, they're not quiet. I mean, the neighbor's dog starts barking. You get like you see, like the one, yeah, and they like quickly run to like the lime green hearse.

SPEAKER_01

I know. So side note did you ever watch How I Met Your Mother? Okay, Barney. Barney's mom is played by Ruth, really, and yeah, and Ted's mom is played by the cousin.

SPEAKER_00

That part I remember now. I remember Ted's mom because I'm looking at this woman and I'm like, she looks really familiar. Yeah, but I didn't realize I was Ruth. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, wow, wow. I mean, I remember watching How I Met Your Mother when it came out, but Six Feet Under, I watched like right before the pandemic, so yeah, more recently.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I watched How I Met Your Mother when it came out, but like I've been re-watching, and so when I had seen that up, like one of the episodes, and I was just like, Wait, wait, I know them. Yeah, wait, oh wow, I thought it was funny. They were both in there.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, I I love when shit like that happens, and you're like, Oh my god, like this isn't the only project they've worked on together. It was pretty cool. At some point, David ends up doing the thing that David does, he hallucinates about the person that's being that the like um hold up.

SPEAKER_01

We skipped, we skipped Nate and Brenda.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, we did. I'm so sorry. No, it's okay. Yeah, oh but forget about David for a second. Like, he needs to chill. After Nate has dinner with Brenda's parents, he arrives at Brenda's right after dinner and he confronts her about the whole thing. And so she basically turns it all around and she doesn't answer the question that Nate's trying to ask her, which pretty much like he's just sped up at this point, and he's like, Did you burn down the house? Still not answering him.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she turns everything around. I mean, he he comes to her place and he's pissed, and rightfully so.

SPEAKER_00

But like, speaking of the manipulation, she literally like has a signed copy of the book about her, the white meat giant fucking book.

SPEAKER_01

Right, like, oh, by the way, here you go. And I signed it. Like, it was all a fucking game, it's always a game with her. It really, and I get why he's pissed off. It's like he went to dinner with her parents, she wasn't there, nobody bothered to tell him, and then she's like, Oh, well, it was their idea, and he's like, Well, they said it was your idea, and he's like, She's like, Yeah, they would. And by the end of the conversation, and and he asks her about the house, and instead of answering, she turns everything around, and by the end of the conversation, it's like she's somehow like a victim, and he's and she's like, uh, something about trust, and he's like, No, like I won't hurt you, but but or something to that effect. I I don't even remember because I was just like, What the fuck?

SPEAKER_00

Like, so crazy, and I'm just like, Well, they did say she was a master manipulator, she's just like everybody's like her pawn, yeah, like she's just playing like a game that nobody else is playing. I I think so, yeah. She's definitely doing too much. This is around the time after this, is when David starts having conversations with the dead people again, and in this case, it's the dead porn star, and she's which is just really him, but it's her, is comparing his gayness to her whorness, which was really, really funny. And so David's argument was well, at least like when I have sex, like I do it with love.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she's like, I loved every guy I fucked while I was fucking them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, okay, and like you could tell, like it's settling weird with David, like that line is settling weird with David because which is weird because it came from David, right? So um, the next day, Keith and David and Brenda and Nate are out having breakfast at the same place, but they don't know it. Right. So, like Brenda and Nate were inside, and Keaton Keith and David were outside, and so like it keeps going back and forth between the couples until when Brenda and Nate's breakfast is over and they walk out of the room.

SPEAKER_01

Before sorry, before before they finish their breakfast, Brenda's like, well, thank you for finding my G spot today.

SPEAKER_00

Stupid, she's just being it's not even like it's funny. I laughed, like I literally audibly laughed, but like it's not even worth like mentioning her antics anymore because we know, like, she's just gonna say some dumb shit like that. But yeah, I thought that was funny too.

SPEAKER_01

But she gives him a key to her place, yeah. And so, like, that was their big moment, you know, is her giving him a key. And then as they leave to walk out, they pass David and Keith, and they're like, Oh, were you guys walking out? Working, walking out, working out, and David is like, because he's like, Oh, did you play racquetball? Were you working out? And he's like, and he he grabs his hand and then Nate kind of gets it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he like David pulled Keith's hand, yeah, and it's like, Yeah, we were working out, yeah. And Nate doesn't really do. He's like, That's that's great, that's great, that's really great. And Brenda's just like, and like Nate's like, okay, but I'll see you later. And he walks away, and Brenda's still just standing there, like staring at them until he pulls her away, which I thought was funny.

SPEAKER_01

Nate introduces her as his girlfriend, but it takes him a while, he's so delayed, and then like she's like, Oh, I prefer fuck puppet. It's like again, again, you can't like you have to say something else. You can't just let it be like you just gave this man a key to your fucking apartment, and you can't say girlfriend, you say fuck puppet. I mean points for being yourself, but chill.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, Brenda's just being too Brenda. Like she just I don't know if it's because she sees no value in mediocre interactions. I don't know. Okay, based on her last one in this episode, which we'll talk about that when we get there. But

SPEAKER_01

Um it just to me, it just seems like everything she does, she's looking for a reaction.

SPEAKER_00

Like the last line in the show, yeah. Yeah, exactly that. But what's the most important out of the scene is when the Luguna thing is brought up again, and David said that he can't go. They're in the parking lot at this point.

SPEAKER_01

Well, but hold on a second, hold on. Right before that, um, Nate and Brenda leave, and Nate is kind of coming to terms, yeah, and and and um Brenda's like oh something. Oh, who says something about being lucky? And Brenda's like, like, did you see that guy? Like, David's the lucky one. Like, yeah, look at him. Yeah, but Nate is just like so baffled, he just doesn't know how to, you know, but and that's funny. Like, to me, that was just funny because Nate was just like so he, you know, cool about it, whatever, but he just doesn't know how to process right away. And Brenda's just like, Yeah, whatever, like she's cool, she's fine, like yeah, whatever.

SPEAKER_00

I think he says something along the lines of, I think my brother just came out to me, and she's like, I think your brother's just lucky.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that was it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was just like she completely just glazed over that whole situation, like it was no big deal to her, right? Right, it was just like, but did you see how attractive he was? Like it was it was really cute. It was I like that part about Brenda a lot. Um yeah, but then she does other shit that just right, and then we get to back to David and Keith, who are just kind of like giggly about it, yeah, and until they start having the conversation about the um firefighter and police officer like Laguna thing, yeah. And there's now there's like an issue, right?

SPEAKER_01

Because David doesn't want to stay the night anymore because he he doesn't think it'd be smart to miss church, and Keith's like, Okay, so we'll just leave like Saturday night, not a big deal, and I'll come with and I'll come to church with you on Saturday.

SPEAKER_00

Well, right.

SPEAKER_01

So he goes, Oh, well, so we'll leave Saturday night, and David's like, Oh, that's great, and then he's like, and I'll come to church with you, and he's like, Well, that's not great.

SPEAKER_00

And that's when Keith is just like, I can't anymore. And he tells David off, and they have a very, very big fight. Yeah, Keith is a hundred percent right in this situation, but then he like just health, but he gets in and ditches him.

SPEAKER_01

And poor David is back in 2001 where he can't even call the fucking Uber. So I don't know what he's gonna do. He probably doesn't even have a cell phone.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I don't know what people did in those situations.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I know in New York City, you jump on the train. I don't know what you do in Los Angeles, bus, like the bus, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe he took the bus and had another bus situation, like the one that Brenda put him in. I mean, if he if he got on the bus and it just happened to be that same bus, that would be so full circle. Oh my god, yeah, and now it's Lisa's favorite scene, yes, and so Brenda and Nate are morons, duh, because neither one of them realized they didn't leave like the radio on. Like, so pretty much they go into Brenda's apartment, Nate uses his ski, and he's like, Oh, it works, it works, yeah, like fucking dumb Nate shit. And Brenda's like, Oh, I didn't realize I left the radio on. It was like loud too. And she's like, I guess I didn't realize how do you not fucking realize the two of you? Which you think she said that knowing somebody was here, like in her apartment, or no? Do you think it was genuine?

SPEAKER_01

I didn't I didn't think that at all.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I don't know what to think about her anymore. Like, I can't trust what she says. But basically, like she walks out for a second, or she was like, Oh no, no, they start making out, and then we see like this man in the towel approaching the toilet, which is Jeremy Sisto, and like Lisa's absolute love, and one of them, just one of them, and he's in the towel with his uneven nipples.

SPEAKER_01

I don't discriminate with his uneven nipples, with his uneven nipples, and it's okay, it's okay. We all have our flaws, and Jeremy Sisto can, yeah, he's good. Don't worry, he's good. But he's like a whole nother shade of bread right now.

SPEAKER_00

It's just so cute because, like at Lisa's notes, she said I stared at him so hard I realized his nipples were uneven, and I think it's adorable. It's just so cute. Oh, but he's so fucking weird with Nate. Like, you could tell he's one of those people that think he's way funnier than he really is.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but he's like, mother, sister, mother, sister, that's not funny. I don't know why I do it. Like, what the fuck?

SPEAKER_00

Where did that come from? I guess that's a joke on his childhood because his parents are psychologists, so he's making a Freud joke.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, whatever. Like, I was just like, Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Anyway, yeah, and Nate's Nate's like weirded out. Like, who is this man in the towel? Yeah, because he was like being weird with Brenda. He wasn't, yeah, he's like poking at her chest, and she like put his finger away. And it was odd, as usual. Brenda fucking flat leaves. Nate is like, I'm gonna go make some tea, which didn't offer them, right? She doesn't offer any, she doesn't introduce them, and she fucking leaves them alone. And and he's like, I guess you're wondering who I am, right? And he's like, uh yeah, and so but then he introduces and he's like, Well, that's my sister. So Nate feels better, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Obviously. Until he turns around, until he turns around, and so because he's in the towel, because he needed to borrow Brenda's shower, like he just he was like, he left a voicemail for his sister, and he was like, Yeah, yeah, I need to like borrow your shower for a little bit. So, like, he he went over, he took a shower, he was in the towel. Obviously, he was just third of his nipples, and when he turned around, oh, and and a little bit of the V. Oh, yeah, I noticed the V too.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I bet you did.

SPEAKER_00

I'll tell Jeff. Yeah, I did notice until Jeff. And um, he notices um, he notices, yeah, yeah. I was thinking about that, and but it says Isabel, right? And so now he's putting all the pieces together. He knows the storybook, he knows Brenda read it to her infant brother all the time, and he knows that she has one that says Nathaniel. So I don't know if now he feels like um that Brenda's brother is gonna be competition. That's the feeling that I got from him that he's like, oh shit, like I have competition against Brenda now. Like, are they creepy close?

SPEAKER_01

That's like are they are they like Game of Thrones?

SPEAKER_00

Uh brother sister, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

What what were their names? Cersei Cersei, no is that her name? Oh, you didn't watch Game of Thrones?

SPEAKER_00

I know what you're trying to say. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I was trying to say incest without saying incest, but yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's given very, very strange vibes, right?

SPEAKER_01

It's but anyway the thing is it's not necessarily just the aspect of the tattoo, but like where it is gives more creepy though, right? I thought I don't remember actually. I thought hers was on her front. Okay, I was gonna say maybe it is on her front. I don't remember, but for a guy to have a tattoo on his lower back for his sister, it it seems a little bit more off-putting. If he had it almost anywhere else, and I don't know if this is just like terrible thinking on my part, you know, that I equate tramp stamp with something, you know, but like I feel like if he had it on any other part of his body, it may not be so off-putting for me to process.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was just the location. The location is very strange, very strange. His towel was a little low, and so well, that's not the problem, a little low.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, exactly. No, it could have been lower, it could have been off. Like I it's fine, it's fine, it's totally fun.

SPEAKER_00

Like the tattoo being so low and knowing that relates to his sister was just very strange, yeah, yeah. Um, but after that, we're at the funeral home, and we're at the porn star funeral, and all the other porn actors and actress actresses are giving their testimonies of how great our porn star friend was and the blowjob she gave, and the way that she was so supportive of this one woman's first time doing double penetration. Yeah, it was Sandra. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I was like, eh, I know her.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I was like, she looks familiar, but look at her with her blonde hair. That's dope. Uh-huh. And um, that's when Ruth walks in, she hears double penetration, freaks the fuck out like to herself, and walks away. And that's when she's like, she asks Nate, like, what's going on in there? And that's you know, that. But pretty much, um, right at the end of the episode, David's sworn in as deacon. Claire has a giant breakthrough in like just a couple seconds when she asks her mom if she wants to watch a movie this weekend.

SPEAKER_01

Claire is uh Ruth is so happy, and Claire is like, if you cry, it's off.

SPEAKER_00

It was cute, it was like you could see like that. Was their they they found their like relationship, you know?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, it looks like that it's the start of something good, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And so, like, the whole family was at the church when David got sworn in. So, like, Brenda, yeah, but like Brenda and Nate were there, and so after church they were talking, and Brenda's shocked to learn that Nate believes in God because he was like, Did you enjoy it?

SPEAKER_01

And she was like, Oh, I loved it, the pageantry and and this and that. And he and Brenda shit, yeah, and then as he's talking, and she's just kind of like, Wait, don't tell me you actually believe in God. And it's so belittling almost.

SPEAKER_00

And he's like, Well, not like a bearded guy in the sky, but yeah, they believe in like something, and she and he's like, You don't believe in anything. She's like, you know, she was like, Most days I wake up so empty, I just feel like I feel like I don't even want to be here. She says something like that. She's like, I don't even understand why I was fucking born, but you know, we don't have a say in it, and just so like cold and uh faithless, yeah, which is fine. I mean, like, I feel like that most days, but it's not like I'm saying it in regards to somebody else talking to me about right how they believe so much in faith, right?

SPEAKER_01

I mean, you know, religion is one of those subjects where you have to tread lightly, and it's okay to not have the same beliefs as somebody, but you shouldn't make someone feel bad about their beliefs, yeah, and that's what she was doing, yeah, yeah, exactly that, and that's where the episode fades off.

SPEAKER_00

And so I'm I'm really excited to see where Claire and Ruth's relationship goes. Um, I think I remember right, but I'm not gonna say anything. Okay, yeah, so I think I remember like the rest of the series with them. And I just I really like this episode.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was pretty good.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Do you want to make any predictions before we sign out?

SPEAKER_01

I don't want to make any predictions, but some of the notes that I had was after meeting Brenda's parents, uh, you can kind of see how she's become the person that she is. And she's too yeah, so that was one thing. I mean, obviously, her her aversion to the term girlfriend, the weirdest, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's more like with her parents, like it's it's almost like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. And the way that she's weird with things, I mean her parents are weird with things, and she's weird with things, and it just and her brother's weird with things, so you could tell it's just like there's some there's some disconnect going on, and it's totally passed down to them, yeah, yeah. Um, and then the the comment about the fuck puppet, which was hilarious, but like completely out of place, uncalled for, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so the tattoos, the fucking weirdo tattoos, and then what we didn't talk about was um I I missed this when I wrote out the notes when Rico did the whatever, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So when he did the reconstruction, and Nate was like, How did you fix the torpedo?

SPEAKER_01

Right, because her her boobs were like one was facing one way, the other one was facing the other way, and they didn't they wanted her in this low-cut thing with no bra. And he was just kind of like, I don't know how I'm gonna do this, but then they did it, and and Nate asked, and he's like, You wouldn't ask Colonel Sanders for his secret recipe, but then he tells him that it's cat food, cans of cat food that he placed under her boobs, and I was like, Well, that's so ironic, considering that it was the cat who killed her.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I like that, I like that so much. Like, I like that you noticed that because I didn't Tito.

SPEAKER_01

If I ever get another cat, I'll name him Tito. It's a cute name for a cat.

SPEAKER_00

It was a cute cat, too. It was well, along with that, we will be on episode six. Yes, so episode six is called the room, the room. Thank you. I remember the most iconic scene in this episode so vividly. This this episode is the halfway pretty much. I would say this is the halfway point. I'm pretty sure this season has 13 episodes, so we're technically at the half point because there's no half for like 13 episode-wise. I mean, we we don't have like six and a half, but this was just about halfway there, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Like I would call this the halfway point for the season. This episode changes the way this rest of the season will play out. This episode introduces a new plot.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, don't tell me more. I don't like spoilers.

SPEAKER_00

No, the only thing I'm gonna say is that just to clarify what I mean by new plot, I don't mean like we have the um the person who died is like the top layer, and then the family is the underlayer, like it's still that. We're just adding more to the family. Okay, but I think you're gonna like it a lot. Okay, yeah, I'm in, I'm already in. So we'll find out what the room is, where the room is, who the room is, all in the next episode.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, if it wasn't so late, I'd be like, Fuck this.

SPEAKER_00

I'm watching right now, right? It's really good.

SPEAKER_01

Like I'll watch tomorrow when I'm supposed to be working.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it is work.

SPEAKER_01

But I mean, these episodes I've been watching them at least twice anyway. So they're worth it. Yeah, so depending, uh, I'll watch it tomorrow. If not, if not like if I can't do it, if I can't listen during work, I'll just watch it on my lunch break.

SPEAKER_00

It's really good. I can't say that I can't wait for you to watch it and text me.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, I don't know what I'm doing this weekend. Yay, yay!

SPEAKER_00

Well, with that, friends, if you're listening to this podcast and you happen to be sitting at a bar with your headphones on, please do not get in the car and drive if you've been drinking. Oh my god, no, unless it's an Uber car. Oh no, no, no, that's what I mean.

SPEAKER_01

Don't make it wheel, Uber, you know, the all the things that they didn't have in 2001 when David was stranded.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and if you want to like maybe like when you tip your bartender, if you want to like maybe take a percentage and throw it at us, that'd be really nice. Oh yes, we love that. Yeah, like if you want to be really nice and like throw down a 20 for your bartender, throw them down 15, throw the five at us. We'd appreciate it. You know, yeah, you can't, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

If you want to support the show financially, we would so appreciate that. You can do that. Find me a coffee, we have PayPal, we have Patreon, and if you join Patreon, listen, tiers start at just one dollar per month. You can't even drink for that cheap, okay? And you get the pre-show plus whatever bonus episodes we put up there. So, like Brittany said, we're cheaper than a pack of gum, and it's sad, but it's true.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like my boyfriend was pointing out to me the other day like, Duncan coffee is dummy expensive for no reason. We're so much cheaper than a Dunkin' Coffee, and Duncan coffee is not good, we're cheaper than bad coffee. Yeah, we are, yeah. So come support us, come join us for our pre-show bullshit drama because there's a whole story going on there. Oh my goodness, like totally separate from the show, and it keeps getting better and better every week.

SPEAKER_01

Next time on the pre-show, I'm gonna tell you about. I don't even know if I could talk about it here, but I'm gonna tell you about my dad's girlfriend that I met for the first time that I forgot to tell you before, but I'll tell you in the next one.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, definitely. And then by time then, we'll probably have some more information for our pre-show story. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But you know, pre-show true cron. I mean, look, the Patreon, you get stuff, right? But if you just want a one-off donation, buy me a coffee and pay and PayPal work, and that's fine. If you don't want to support financially, that's why we would just love if you just listen. Yeah, just keep listening. Tell a friend, write a review, yeah. It's all it's all love. SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and look, if if you have no clue what we're both saying because we're both a little drunk and tired, go listen to the last the end of the last episode. We definitely got it right there. And with that, I am Brittany.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh, and I am Lisa.

SPEAKER_00

And I hope you guys have a great night or day or whatever the fuck you're in.

unknown

Bye.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yes, bye. Oh wait! Drink responsibly. We did, yeah. Okay, well, don't drink and drive. We already said that. Okay, bye.
