Yo, we're back. We're back. Well, we're only back if you already heard the pre-show. But if you didn't hear the pre-show, welcome to this episode of Sassin Sips. We are your hosts. I'm Lisa.
SPEAKER_00I'm Brittany.
SPEAKER_01And this is the podcast where we watch and we re-watch and we drink and we dish and we get silly and we have fun. Welcome.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I need silly fun.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So what are you drinking tonight? We didn't even say what we were drinking on the pre-show, except for like alcohol.
SPEAKER_00Well, now I have none left, but so now I'm drinking air. Oh and I should be hydrating with some water so I don't die. I I have multiple liquids in front of me. I have my empty glass of Pinot Griggio, I have a cup of coffee from about four hours ago, maybe five hours ago. I have some water, and then I have like a big like you know when those like soup mugs.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00I have that, but there was some kind of like pasteroni in there.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00And so this is my spread tonight. Lisa, what is your spread tonight?
SPEAKER_01I have some water with a lemon in it, and I have my yellow tail.
SPEAKER_00There we go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's class. That's what I need.
SPEAKER_01I I like my wine, but I'm I'm trying to drop a few pounds for this week 16. I need to, you know, even though it's my daughters, I need to be like, damn, look at her. She got a 16 out. No, no. So I'm trying to I'm trying, I'm trying to like alternate the wine and the water to help, you know.
SPEAKER_00Just mix them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I know, I know. There's this line. Um, it it's it's a meme, but it's like this line from like, you know, like Arthur, the cartoon that was on PBS. Okay, so you know, like the little sister, I was gonna say little brother, you know, the little sister DW?
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00All right, so somebody says some dumb shit to her, like I'm so old.
SPEAKER_01I used to read the books before there was a TV show.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's so cute. I have the books in my classroom. Oh, the question was like, how do you blow square balloons? And DW goes, blow square breaths. And that and the mixing the one and the water is giving me the same energy. Just mix them.
SPEAKER_01Okay, we have a few housekeeping items before we jump into brotherhood. Okay, number one, let's address the sound quality. I don't know if this is gonna sound great because when I came down to the basement to record, lo and behold, these little fuckers lost the wire to my microphone. So, and I can't find it.
SPEAKER_00So yeah. So I'm not I'm just plugged. I didn't know it was like completely lost.
SPEAKER_01No, that's that's what I was saying. Like, it's not there. So, yeah, so I'm I'm just having to use the computer audio. So hopefully it's not too bad. Um, if it is, well, please don't leave.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, just suffer for this episode. We'll fix it next episode, I swear.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the next thing is we teased. I know we were we didn't release an episode last week, but um, one of my kids was sick, the other one was still was better, but still recovering from COVID. And it you you had a lot of scheduling issues with work, so it just it was just hard um to to honestly to set aside a couple of hours to get this done. So, you know, we I'm sure you guys understand life gets in the way, and we hated missing a week, but sometimes you know, health and kids and responsibilities have to take precedence.
SPEAKER_00So this sucks too when like your favorite podcast didn't post. Like in the mornings, I've been listening to podcasts again on the way to work, and there's this one that I'm waiting for like the episode to drop, and it's just literally like this girl rambling, and I just kind of need that in the morning just to like wake up, and she didn't like drop it this morning, and I'm like, the fuck, I needed you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, I listen, I I get it, and actually that brings me to my second and third points, second third and fourth points is that the last time we mentioned that we had done a guest appearance on conversations with Robbie Sherman and that the episode would be coming out soon. It is out, so go listen. And um Brittany, well, me and possibly Britney, schedule depending, have tentative plans to record with him again. And it may or may not involve another cartoon cat. You know, you'll just have to stay tuned to find out. Yeah, we got it type, yeah, maybe. And um, and then also the last time we talked about the Adnan Sayed update, and I mentioned that there was the two new suspects that were mentioned. So I was wrong. The second suspect wasn't Jay, it was Bilal. Bilal is whoops, um Bilal is he was Adnan's mentor at the mosque, but he was the one who was caught with underage boys.
SPEAKER_00Oh shit, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So he he was the second suspect. Now, you know, even though the men the the motion mentioned why they were suspects, they didn't say like which attribute was attached to which suspect. So I don't know, you know, but yeah, he he was the second one. I have been doing a serious deep dive. Um, me and my friend were like texting each other constantly. I've started re-listening to all the other podcasts, serial, undisclosed truth and justice, and I've been taking notes. I have fully embraced my nerddom and then transcribed my notes into like a Google Doc, and it's like five pages long already. But yeah, but the thing is that there's so much information, and so I hate every time I hear something, I'm like, oh, but wait, I don't remember. Was it and so I feel like I just need to be organized for my mental health? So that's what I've been doing. Completely get that, yeah. So I will I'll send it to you if you want to laugh and read, but yeah, I won't laugh, I'll read it seriously because, like, oh my god, Lisa, when was it?
SPEAKER_002017? We were listening to serials. Well, I think we had both finished serial and then we started exploring other podcasts together. But I remember it was like 2017 summer, we were talking about it, so it's been a number of years.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, serial came out in 2014. Oh my god, and I know 2014. What that season came out in 2014, season one, yeah, and because I remember that when I was doing a certain job, I would have customers and two different customers happened to ask me, have you ever heard of you know, like I would ask them like if there's something that they wanted to listen to or whatever? And you asked me, Have you ever heard of Kats? No, it's somebody getting ice upstairs.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, that was so loud.
SPEAKER_01Hi, hi. Um yeah, so two two different people had asked me if I had ever heard of cereal, and at that point I was like, What's a podcast? Oh, and so, but after the second one, I was like, Okay, that's so random. Like, I've never heard of a podcast, and like two random people that didn't even know each other on two different days had asked me about it. So I was like, all right, you know, like I'm in the car a lot, so I'll give it a try. And this had to be 2016 for me.
SPEAKER_00That sounds about right because now that I'm thinking about it, it was probably 2016-2017 that I listened to serial, or no, 2000, maybe 2015.
SPEAKER_01Because what year did Prince die?
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's a good question. Um it was 2017. Right?
SPEAKER_01This is great audio. Um, so Prince died in 2016. I stopped working that job after a car accident, which was December of 2015, because I remember that the day that Prince died, I had to take Amaris to this place because she got lice at school and my arm was in a sling from the accident, so I couldn't do the lice. And I remember that my mom had to drive us because I couldn't drive. And when we as soon as we got back in the car, that's when it was on the news. And but I had listened to the podcast as I was driving for that job. So it was 2015 when I heard it, and then it was like everybody that I spoke to, I was like, Did you listen to serial? You should listen to Serial.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was like you just want to talk to people about it, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01And so, like, I totally understood where these guys were coming from, and then I was so desperate for more content because it's like that's it, but but but no, and and so I listened to a few different ones, but the ones that were really good were Truth and Justice, which back then was Serial Dynasty, but then transformed and undisclosed, and and it's just like a wealth of information and and such good research, and you know, I I mean they really put a lot of work into this, but the thing is that it's just so much information. So I've been trying to write my own notes based on like what I hear so that I can kind of keep my own stuff straight in my head, but yeah, but yeah, um, because you and I started working together in 2016, no, no, yes, because I started working at that job in 2016 in the fall, and you came in the spring. Yes, and then I suckered you in too.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah, I remember like you're the one who showed me how to make like a cue on um iTunes podcast because that's like what I was listening to my podcast through, which is such a throwback to that time.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00Oh wow, yeah, you had them all lined up for me, and I used to listen to them on the way to work because I had like an hour and a half commute.
SPEAKER_01I put them all in chronological order, everything. So you gotta listen to them in order.
SPEAKER_00I was like, here, take my phone, friend.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like nice to meet you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I remember like the progression from like you putting murder podcasts on my phone to us driving home on break to get your yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's a sorry for a pre-show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, to then like planning a vacation all within like a month and a half.
SPEAKER_01I know, but you know, when you know, you don't, yeah, it's true. About that, like this is the exactly the time of year when we would go on vacation.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, I was thinking about that too. I was thinking about that on October like 1st because I got into the car accident on October 3rd.
SPEAKER_01So we came back on the first second or the first the last time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's what I was thinking about. Yeah, yeah, and I think it was that night, like I think it was like one of those nights where it was pouring, and I was like doing work at my desk, and I looked out the window and I was like, This time three years ago, we were sitting in the hot tub playing cards, hearing noises from the barn.
SPEAKER_01Listen to the scary noises, and like all the city instincts in us was like running to the door in the back of my head.
SPEAKER_00I was like, I want to go explore it.
SPEAKER_01I mean, well, we did, but with the dog in the daylight, and we took, I mean, we took Stella with us because I mean she's not much help, but like you know, animal. She's she's she's better help than we were, so yeah.
SPEAKER_00No, the normal people would be like, ah, she looks like two percent pit bull. I'm scared, so yeah, she's yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, then we found that um weird altar-looking thing in the woods, yeah, and we were like, We're done.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I remember like kind of running away from there, and then at one point I was like, Lisa, look at that, it's so cool. And you're like, I don't fucking care, let's go.
SPEAKER_01It was like you might the house that we stayed at had a lot of acres attached and a little weird creek, and so we decided we were gonna walk. The creek was like very close to the house, but the rest of the property extended past it. So we decided we were gonna go on the other side of the creek because it was it was like practically dry, it really wasn't um like you could more or less step over it, it wasn't a lot of water in there.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it was like maybe an inch of water, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And and so, like as we're walking around in the I mean, I say woods, but it wasn't like it wasn't very dense woods or anything like that, you know. So we were just like walking to see how far back the land extended and if there were more like houses on the property, what whatever, like maybe another creek, who knows? There was an apple tree, and then there was just like these. It looked like somebody had set up camp, but but weird, like it was a very strange place for a camp.
SPEAKER_00It really didn't make sense, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, and then there was that cross by the fire pit in front of the house.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, yeah, so that was deliberately made, like it was like one around it, it wasn't like an accident or like freaking nature.
SPEAKER_01No, it was like sticks, right? Like tied together to make a cross.
SPEAKER_00Weren't there like three of them or something like that?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I don't remember. I thought it was only one, but it's not impossible.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I remember that.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, that was freaky.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that and all like the daddy long legs that were there, yeah. I remember I remember just laying in bed and seeing them crawl on the wall.
SPEAKER_01Charmander in the ceiling, yeah.
SPEAKER_00The Charmander. Oh that's so strange.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that was it was a nice house, it was a nice property, but it was strange.
SPEAKER_00But would we go back?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, you know that they they sold the house. Um the second one, yeah, the one with the with the weird cross and the creek and all that, yeah. Um, they sold it. I want to say either in 2020 or 2021 because I got an email from them saying that they were putting the house up for sale, and as somebody who had stayed there, they wanted to let me know in case I was interested in purchasing it because like I left them a good review, whatever. No, yeah, and so I was like, Yeah, I wish I could, but no thanks.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, plus you're up in the middle of fucking nowhere.
SPEAKER_01Well, like, where am I gonna find an extra $400,000?
SPEAKER_00Like, oh yeah, that's it.
SPEAKER_01But no thanks, yeah. So, but yeah, that was that was fun. But then, but I was thinking about it when the kids had the two days off, and I was like, that would have been our weekend.
SPEAKER_00That was our weekend. We went over Russia Shaw, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. That's that's always our weekend, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, fucking times, man. Like maybe next year, you know. I feel like next year, hopefully things will be a little bit more stable, exactly, exactly. And so if we have a plan in advance, that could be a good sign.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and there's always that house that we that we loved, the one in West Virginia.
SPEAKER_00I know it's a little bit further, but is that like the smooth or something with that house?
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah, yeah, but I've I mean I've never been to West Virginia, so I'm game. Yeah, it could be then, yeah, but um oh okay, last little bit. Last time you talked about teaching your students cursive and the parents who are like not so thrilled. Yeah, so I did a Twitter poll.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I didn't even know you did.
SPEAKER_01I did. 83% said yes, cursive should be taught in school.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I wish there was a why feature.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. Well, um one one of our podcast friends, Robbie, said, How else would you read historical documents?
SPEAKER_00Okay, which is like that parent's concern. The parent was like, Let's just get rid of all the historical documents, right?
SPEAKER_01Right. He's like, sir, the constitution because the kid can't read script.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I just I can't believe like my initial answer back was like, I'm sure it's printed somewhere.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, I'm sure it is, but that's not the point, motherfucker.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but yeah, it's true. How would we read historical documents? You're right, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So that was my favorite comment because it exactly went back to what we talked about.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, that that's really funny. Look, I don't mind teaching script, especially because the way that the curriculum wants you to teach it is through their instructional videos. So I'm just copying what somebody else is saying, which is great. Like they came up with the system, they're like, here's your script as the teacher, support the students, you know them, and like apply it there. I'm like, cool, this is great. It's just fitting it into the day, but I'm I'm kind of for it too. It's just the fact that like there was such a gap when it wasn't mandated is silly.
SPEAKER_01All right, well, I'm I'm done with my housekeeping notes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I kind of am too with my comments.
SPEAKER_01Do you wanna you wanna take over or you want me to read?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So um Lisa and I were talking prior, and we were talking about just like running through this and then adding our thoughts after, like we say we're gonna do every time, and then it ends up being two hours.
SPEAKER_01So we'll we'll we can try again, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, it's a new is a new chance. Yeah, no, I'm mostly at fault because then I like get stuck in like thoughts and shit like that. So I'm gonna I'm gonna work through this. All right, so we are talking about once again episode seven. It's called Brotherhood, and it surrounds the life of a soldier. And the episode opens up with that said soldier, his name is Victor, and he's making like a home video in his like tent thing that he's staying at for his family back home. Then like everybody's goofing around the video, and he's being really serious about it, and he like really seems like out of all like the like the soldiers in the video, like he's the one that actually took like being a soldier seriously, which is like very crucial to the later on part of the story. But as I'm sorry, I'm playing with like my hair clip. Um as like the video is progressing, like the camera starts panning away from it, and we realize that the video is being watched by not just us as the viewer, but like somebody in a hospital bed, which happens to be Victor, and we watch him slowly die. So, and like he's dropping the remote in his hand as his brother walks in and then finds him dead. He's like, You want to like I got the newest copy of the park? I'm like VHS in his hand, and he's like, I know. And so we see Victor Wayne Kovic pass away, uh, 1971 to 2001. Next scene we have at Brenda's. Uh Nate wakes up to a beep from David.
SPEAKER_01Beep, a beep, his beeper was going off.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I know. I read that as a beep, and I was like, oh, that's cute, Lisa, but I knew what you meant. Nate wakes up to a beep. Well, he has like a beeper and like it went off from yeah, it was vibrating, like a pager or whatever. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, from David to give Nate orders. Like, of course, David's just being like a big fucking bossy bitch, and Nate's like, okay. And so once again, we have another episode where it's the same shit, different day. Right. Um, and so like Nate's being all fucking cute with Brenda. Brenda, they're kind of being cringy. It's kind of like nauseating how gross they are. And then Nate goes, I love you. And Brenda's whole fucking tune changes. Yeah. Like you could see it on her face. And she was just like, Oh.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it it was almost like she was happy, but she didn't know what to do with it.
SPEAKER_00Which is really dumb because like the way that they were acting was like super lovey, honeymoony.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And so it felt natural when Nate said it. He said it in the context of like, she made a joke and he was like, Oh, I love you. And she was just like, um, that's the first time I ever heard those words before.
SPEAKER_01Right. And and the thing is, if if any other person watched, I mean, aside from hearing the, you know, like when he says, like, yeah, I just said that we'll move on, you never would have known that that was the first time. Because he said it just so easily, it was so such a natural moment for him.
SPEAKER_00It really was. It was a cute moment until Brenda had a runaway again. So yeah. Um, but he like quickly switches the subject and he's like, We should go away for the weekend. Like, we've been dating, we haven't gone away. Like, we have to. That's like crucial in a relationship. And she was like, Yeah, sure. So back at the Fisher house, Ruth is hovering. She literally was just like standing over Claire while she was like reading a book, eating breakfast, and Claire goes, hovering. Ruth is like, Oh, fucking Ruth. She knows what she's doing and she acts like she doesn't, and it's really like pissing me off.
SPEAKER_01I love Ruth so much. Can I tell you that? I didn't think I was gonna like her character this much, and I fucking love her. Like, I love her so much. Every episode makes me love her more.
SPEAKER_00It's like I don't know who's the bigger wait, hold on one second. I'm sorry, yeah, I just broke my clip from playing with it. What the heck? Oh, what a terrible day. Anyway, I gotta I gotta stop fidgeting. I don't know who's the biggest drama queen, like Ruth, David, or um, or or Brenda's brother. Why am I forgetting his name? Billy. Yes, I don't know who's the bigger drama queen. I I can't tell.
SPEAKER_01Ruth has her outbursts, but I I personally wouldn't consider her a drama queen, at least not yet. Um David is a fucking drama queen and Billy is a drama queen, but is Billy a drama queen because of his diagnosis?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm not sure. Yeah, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Right now, my money's on David.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, my money's so on David, but like Ruth has some outbursts. I forgot if it was this scene or if it's like the next Ruth season.
SPEAKER_01It's not this one.
SPEAKER_00I believe the kitchen, it's annoying.
SPEAKER_01No, it's not this one because this one she just says that she invited her friend over, and Claire Claire like catches on and and she just has like a smile, like, oh okay, like I see I see you, mom.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, yeah, so like after Claire's like hovering, Ruth's like, oh, and uh I invited a friend over for dinner, and like that was pretty much it, just like Lisa said. And then we get to see David, fucking Mr. Drama Queen, at his deacon's meeting because you know he's he's all fucking fancy and shit, yeah, and they're discussing new associate priest prospects, and priest Jack puts his hands on David's shoulders.
SPEAKER_01That I wrote that in there because it was just such an odd thing to do.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01It was insinuating something, like it just it wasn't in a natural thing, right? Because it it was a very natural thing to do, but an odd thing to do for a priest.
SPEAKER_00It was as if he was saying, Hey, I'm gay too.
SPEAKER_01Yes, because that's my inclination, and we'll we'll get there because there's other stuff that I have that like I was thinking about in terms of like David and Father Jack and even the other priest Clark that they're discussing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, and that's that's a big part of this.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because in this scene they want to vote on a new associate priest, and they've all met the new guy except David. And David's like, Well, I don't want to vote until I meet him, and so that's and then it was like that's when he put his hand on his shoulder, is like, oh, okay, you know, that's fine. Like, just I like Father Jack, he's just like roll with it kind of guy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's just like roll with it. I like that. He rolls with his homies, and speaking of rolling with the homies, we got Billy here walking in on yo, Billy walking in on Nate and Brenda, and they were like at it, and Billy just strolls in, and you knew they were at it so bad, all they showed us was their feet, well their legs. Well, that's the thing. I had the whole scene set up, right? Like where it was like the doorway was like the main focus, and then it was just like the feet on the side, yeah, with the noises, and it went on for a while before Billy strolled in, and he was just like, He was like, I haven't even seen that on the internet.
SPEAKER_01It's so fucking awkward, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And Brenda had like an actual reaction, but it was just I don't know, they're interrupting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she was just like, Fuck you, Billy, fuck you. Yeah, yeah, and Nate's just like Billy, yeah, and Billy's just like Nate, yeah. Billy's like, yeah, but I was riding my bike on the boardwalk, and I got the cell phone, and I was taking pictures of hookers, like what the fuck, Billy?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, what the fuck? You can bring your laptop, but you couldn't bring your phone.
SPEAKER_01Oh clearly this is 2001 and not 2020.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, for sure. No shot on an iPhone here, yeah. And so, yeah, so he starts talking about like pictures of hookers, which makes sense later on, but like just to fill you guys in right now, like he he's a photographer, he's not just taking pictures of hookers, yeah. But he's got like a legit camera and shit, and he does see shit.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the thing that was weird though is that after they Brenda and Nate obviously like wrap up, and then Nate leaves, but you see Brenda leaning like Billy's sitting on the floor with his pictures or or you know his camera.
SPEAKER_00Um Brenda, right? What that was like the last scene.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, no, no, no. Brenda has only a bathrobe on, and she's leaning over Billy's back, like over his shoulder, to see what he's doing. And it's just it just struck me as an awkward pose, like a very intimate position.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're not just brother sister, but like stepbrother, stepsister, and that's annoying. And yeah, I mean, I don't I didn't know that, but oh no, no, no, no, I don't mean like actually in the show. I mean like you know how like people make jokes like stepbrother, no. Oh that's what I mean. Yeah, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_01Like it's that's not like a spoiler or anything, or it if it is, I completely forgot, but I don't think it's but I think but then like later on in the show, something is said, and I feel like maybe that scene was put there to make you uncomfortable so that when the scene at the end comes up, it's like a fallback almost. Because that's when Nate leaves and tells her something like, All right, well, don't forget about this weekend, and he leaves, and then Billy is like, Well, what's this weekend? And she's like, Oh, uh, we're going to Cactus World so I could get plans for the backyard. And she doesn't tell him that they're going to like the desert to sit in the mud or whatever they're gonna fucking do, you know. Yeah, yeah. It it was I don't know, it's just all strange when it comes to Billy.
SPEAKER_00It is like the way that he interacts with Brenda and how she is so complicit about it or complicit with it. You know what I mean? I feel like I'm using that word wrong. Anyway, um complacent, complacent. Oh, look at me, the English teacher, not knowing shit. All right, moving on from my idiotic ways. David meets with sleepy it's okay. What happened?
SPEAKER_01I said you're sleepy, it's okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's okay.
SPEAKER_01Had a rough day, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah, I'm reflecting to myself anyway. I gotta get over it. David meets with Paul Kovic regarding Victor Kovic's service, like the army guy who did. Um, Paul wants cheapo cremo. Yeah, I like you didn't write cremo, but I read it like that earlier.
SPEAKER_01I was like, wait, I did. I I was like, I didn't write that.
SPEAKER_00No, I read that.
SPEAKER_01No, I love that.
SPEAKER_00Like, and then I kept saying it to myself earlier, and I was eating something like I was eating that fucking pastoroni bullshit, and I was like, cheapo cremo, and I'm eating cremo. Like, this is where my head is. Like, I I'm around kids too often. I'm sorry. Um, Paul wants like a cheap cremation or cheapo cremo, even though there may be uh veteran benefits, and so this becomes like a whole issue in the show, and I really like the way that um Nate advocates for Victor's services because his brother just like doesn't want them at all, and David's like fucking buy the book stick up his ass, but not in the way that he enjoys. And so Nate walks in and recognizes Paul as a high school athlete, and then Nate and David argue over Nate taking days off, and Nate and David's like, if I had a fucking day off, like this bullshit, and Nate's like, right, Ruth interrupts. What happened?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because doesn't Nate tell him something like, Well, you chose this life, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_00Nate's like, stop complaining about choices that you're making for yourself, yeah. Just being a drama queen, and this is when Ruth decides to test the pitch in her voice, and she's like, Oh my god, like a cook, and yeah, he's a hairdresser and he loves it, right?
SPEAKER_01Because you are in the kitchen arguing over the days off, and then it's like she's like packing shit up and slamming chairs, you know, and it's just like David's like appalled, like, oh my god, you know, god god forbid you you're this woman, this fucking adult woman can have a fucking life. And Nate's like, all right, cool. Like, do you lady? But it's just like slamming chairs because even though obviously, even though David, you know, you could tell, he doesn't really say anything, he doesn't act out or anything.
SPEAKER_00But I think Ruth just expects like a reaction, she wants a reaction out of them, like she's looking for that.
SPEAKER_01And and so she's already like gone off the hinge, and she she just like slams the chair, walks out, and they're just kind of like, okay, like, okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and like the weird part is like as the show goes on, we've seen this before, so it's not like I'm really spoiling anything. Nate's just kind of like, okay, whatever about things. Like sometimes he has like little like hallucinations, but I feel like they're more aligned with like the way that regular people hallucinate under stress, or not hallucinate, but like yeah, yeah, yeah, I guess mild hallucinations that are not like something that have to be medically treated, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because when when she says it, I think David is like, couldn't you go to a restaurant? Or David is not he's like passive aggressive rude in that sense. Like, I don't I'm not even really saying it right, but it's like he obviously doesn't want the guy in the house.
SPEAKER_00No, and like you see that later on, like David's hallucinations, which are just like fucked up, yeah, and Claire too. Yeah, and I was gonna say, and Claire too, like David and Claire are like alike in that way, and I don't think they realize they're alike in that way, which is interesting. Yeah, yeah, so yeah, Nate's cool, David's not like big shocker, does not surprise us at school. Claire is sitting in her math class reading Don Hunt. Oh my god, Don Juan instead of paying attention. Like Claire is just so over life, like she thinks that she has her own direction, just like every high schooler, like when content, and you know, thinking that they're making the best choices for their lives, even though they don't really know what's up, right? I think they do. And Claire has this big fucking view of life, partially probably because like she just experienced a major a major death in her life, also because she has always experienced death in her life, and she's just like, what's the point of living? blah blah blah, like very matter-of-fact y, but also like philosophical. And so, like her math teacher is just like, well, maybe if you weren't reading, like you would understand algebra, like it's important, and then she starts imagining her teacher's head blowing up, which is not the first time in this episode that she has like a bizarre hallucination, like that's just the first one, and then they follow.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_00So taking a break from Claire after Ruth fucking hits the high note, uh, she goes to Nikolai's flower shop to return vases and leaves. I you see, I looked at that word and I said vases, vases, vases, vases, and I said, nah, it's vases. But I would call a singular one a vase, but I call multiple vases. I don't know what that is, I hate it. I hate being sometimes. Anyway, Ruth goes to return the flower receptacles and leaves with a job. Yeah, she gets a job, and it's funny because like she goes off on her Ruth tangent and she's like, Well, if you don't like me, you could just fire me. And Nicolai's like, I didn't even hire you, like fucking chill. And Ruth's like, flowers, like I'm really just kind of over it, not over the show. I really enjoy the show, just the characters are so fucking full of themselves, and I'm just like, okay. I feel like I'm so terrible. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_01Why?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I'm just like, fuck this, fuck that, fuck you. Anyway, well, not fuck you, Lisa.
SPEAKER_01Just no, I know, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So David meets with Clark, and Clark is very forthcoming and like radical adjacent. Yeah, and Lisa likes Clark.
SPEAKER_01I did. He he was so open and so like I don't want to say hip because I'm gonna sound like like I'm 65 years old, but he wasn't very like pro Merry Christmas, pro-Thanksgiving, pro-Columbus, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00And excuse me, friends, if that sounds very like harsh and out of nowhere, but that's why you need to listen to the yeah, yeah, the pre-show. Yeah, this is this is me, the teacher, telling you, do your homework, listen to the pre-show. Because when I ask you to come here to class with your homework done, so that's why we can use it for today's assignment. This is why. Sorry, I got my teacher voice in there. I know, yeah. So this is why you gotta do your homework and listen to the pre-show. That would make sense. Now I sound out of context and I sound horrible. Don't take it that way, guys.
SPEAKER_01No, but Clark, Clark is definitely pro-safe space, you know. Yeah, and I like that, but I think that, and and the thing is, like, they they seem to be getting along so well. Um, I really liked what he was talking about, it just seems so nice, like refreshing.
SPEAKER_00Like he was ready to like make like reform in their um their parish, I guess you could say it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's that's why I wrote radical adjacent because he clearly doesn't want to just take everything and and start from scratch. But I think that he recognizes that as time goes on, things change, and you're not really you're not really doing anyone a favor by not acknowledging it, and he's in direct, basically direct opposition to what's the other guy, Creek Kriegen tholler.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we're having a hard time saying the other guy's last name, the one who's not radical adjacent, the one who's very like old America, like let's go back to the way that things were.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's definitely got like a red hat in his closet, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So we're just gonna call him Mr. Priest guy. But if you guys watch the episode, you know who we're talking about.
SPEAKER_01I wrote his name down, so when we get there, I'll see it. But yeah, but I I liked Clark. I think that Clark would be good for that church or any church. And the thing is, like, you get the sense that David likes Clark.
SPEAKER_00It seems like David's really excited to be in the priesthood now or the deaconhood, whatever, because of Clark. Like he's like, oh shit, this is in the back of the head, like in the back of my head, like this is why I wanted to be part of this to make changes like this. And I'm so happy I have somebody like putting the stones down for me to walk on, pretty much.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and see how that works.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I really hoped for that to work out, but we'll get to it. Um, back in the basement, Nate's getting pissy about the elevator door not opening, and then he's like, Rico, help me out. Rico's like, you keep bringing bodies, you keep giving me work, and now I have to do double shifts.
SPEAKER_01The elevator only bothers you when you're stuck in it, yeah, right?
SPEAKER_00Like Rico's being like a little bitch, but like he has to like work double shifts on the weekend. I would be a little bitch too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because Nate Nate wants to take the weekend off, so now Rico's stuck working double shifts.
SPEAKER_00But at the same time, Nate's like, here, this guy, like, it's just going straight to cremation. And Rico's like, oh man, I want the extra work. So it's like Rico, fucking pick and choose, man.
SPEAKER_01I think I think that it's Rico takes a lot of pride in his work. And that's that's an admirable trait. But so I could see both sides because he feels like cremation is a waste, yeah. Right type. But at the same time, I feel like you can hold both of those beliefs at the same time that you don't want to work the double shift, but you don't believe the guy should be cremated.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, especially when they open up like the the guy, like oh my god, Victor's body bag, and they see that like his army medals are like taped on his vest, and his file is literally like on his chest.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they taped it to him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they fucking taped it to him.
SPEAKER_01Oh, but we forgot something. When Rico opens the elevator for Nate, he makes a comment like, Oh, don't worry, I know this will never be Fisher and Sons and Rico. Yeah, he does feel that Fisher and Sons and definitely see his like distaste for the whole situation right there.
SPEAKER_00Rico has been vocal about the fact that he's not a partner for quite a while, and I feel like he has every right to be because he is the backbone of that place, he really is. They wouldn't have the money they have if Rico wasn't doing the job that he was doing, and if Nate didn't step in, I think that the place would have gone under, to be honest. Yeah, like this Nate Sr. passed away, but then Nate Jr. was like, nah, like my co-op needs me, the place would have gone under, right?
SPEAKER_01And I think that they also make it pretty clear that as far as bodies, bodies that are a challenge, Rico is the one who does them. It's not a hundred percent said or even implied, but it it's leaning towards David doesn't have the skill that Rico does because oh it's so implied. Yeah, Nico, Nico, Rico, Nicolai, Rico, okay. Rico is the one who's like, oh, look at this. I did this, and he shows the pictures, and maybe David just doesn't, you know, brag, but it seems that Rico is the one with the talent. So they need him, they need him.
SPEAKER_00Like that. That's David, like a jack of all trades without being a master.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like David wears a lot of hats, but he's just it doesn't seem like he's absolutely amazing at one thing. And excuse me if this becomes a major plot, because I forgot, but it seems like David's like main responsibilities are like taking care of mom, doing like mortician stuff, and selling, right? Being a salesman. And Nate is obviously a better salesman, Rico's a better like artist, and mom's doing fine on her own. She's she's got a guy, everything's okay. And it just seems like David.
SPEAKER_01David is just really good at being a stick in the mud.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Maybe he feels like he's not a fixture anymore. I keep getting that feeling.
SPEAKER_01Maybe. But yeah. But then after they find all that stuff taped to the body, Regal is actually happy because it means that the guy they see that the guy wanted that he applied to be buried in the National Cemetery. So he didn't want to be cremated. So now Regal gets to work on the body, and Nate's like, yeah, okay. And then that'll come back to bite him in the ass later.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But somebody looking to progress in their lives, uh, at school, Claire meets with the counselor, the one who apparently isn't helpful at all that she keeps going back to. Um Claire meets with the counselor who recommends Sierra Crossroads program, which to me sounds like a drug rehab program. Yeah, right. I hear crossroads, and I'm like, that sounds like a I need to get clean within six weeks type place.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, right. But she um she asks him, like, why does he even care? And he's like, Well, I like you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was a little weird. I don't know. I got I got a feeling too. Don't worry, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But she, you know, so now she's thinking about that.
SPEAKER_00And Nate's meeting with Vic's counselor who fills him in on what Vic wishes actually were. Right. And so Vic's counselor reveals that he actually helped him sign the paperwork because he was all shaky and stuff, and there are a lot of small boxes.
SPEAKER_01He said he had they said that he had gulf war syndrome, and that because that's the thing, right? Paul Paul was saying how he had Gulf War syndrome and he hated the army, he didn't want the VA benefits, like basically fuck the army, you know, and that Vic hated the army because of what they did to him. But then when you get to the counselor, the counselor's like, he he said that that was the best thing that he ever did in his life, like the best time in his life, he didn't hate the army, and so now you have two different stories, and the counselor's like, you know, he I I did fill it out for him because he asked me because he was shaking, but this is what he wanted, and so then it's like you know, ugh.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was it was a hard topic to like I'm sure I'm sure it was difficult for Nate in that moment to decide, like, do I do what's morally right or what's legally right?
SPEAKER_01Right, and he even says he's like, No, I told Paul, and Paul threw that stuff in the trash, and Nate is like, so you dug it out and taped it to him, and he's like, Well, yeah, because you could, you know, he's like, All I did is pass along the information. What you do with it is, you know, basically on you. I give the guy a lot of credit, you know. He did it for Vic, he did it for him, he didn't do it for anybody else. And it's true, like, who knows what what's gonna happen, but I feel like that's something that he did for him, and also maybe so he can go to sleep at night with a clean conscious, knowing that I tried, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and that's probably what Rico was thinking too, as he's like embollowing Vic. And David walks in, and David starts getting pissy and reminds Rico that like he's not to listen to Nate, but yeah, he's like, didn't I tell you anytime Nate tells you to do something to then ask me? Some bullshit, like but that's the thing, that's what I mean. Like, I feel like David feels like he's losing control, yeah, and that he he doesn't have like that like niche anymore, you know? Nietzsche, niche, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So well, because senior gone now, David is like the who am I? What?
SPEAKER_00Like, who am I? Like he's having like um like a crisis almost, like an identity crisis.
SPEAKER_01I could see that, but I was gonna say that like now he's in charge, and so now he has to fulfill that role, but so he's in a sense, he's becoming Nate's superior, except Nate refuses to see him like that. Yeah, so it it it presents a dilemma because yeah, David's his boss, but Nate's like, fuck you, like yeah, fuck this.
SPEAKER_00And Nate actively tries to humble David, and David's still like, no, the book says this, and so we can't, you know, change it.
SPEAKER_01I love it. David says one thing, and Nate's like, fuck your couch.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, oh my god, literally that. Oh, and so Renda arrives for dinner as Hiram, who's once a professional chef, like like our girl Ruth said in her little rant. Professional chef in Chicago, and he gave it all up to be a hairdresser.
SPEAKER_01Um, all right, Hiram following your dreams. Good for you, yeah, and he's happy about it. Yeah, nobody said otherwise, lady.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like she's so weird. But Hiram's cooking all the dinner, pretty much, and so Claire like walks in while Hiram's cooking dinner with Ruth in the kitchen, and like he was trying to give her like a little neck kiss, it was like kind of cute, but Claire's like hallucinating, like them banging on the counter, Hiram being like, Oh hi, nice to meet you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, this whole dinner scene was like the fucking wackiest part.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because they all sit down to dinner, and then David's hallucinating, like his mom being like, I just love his cock.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but okay, so one thing that I didn't really like is that when Brenda arrives, you know, she she's doing her Brenda thing, and David is like, I don't know where Nate is, and she's like, I can exist without him. I was like, Yes, bitch, you go, girl. Like I love that about her.
SPEAKER_00It I really like how she put David in his place in that moment, and it was cool, and not even nasty, like totally not nasty, just like it's okay, like I could exist without him.
SPEAKER_01Like, yes, you absolutely can. And you know, she she is just comfortable in her own skin. And I I I do really like that about her. And then there's the weird hallucinations, yeah. And then when they finally get there, as they're as they're having dinner, Ruth mentions that she got a job, and they're all like, Oh, okay, blah blah blah. And Hiram's like, You did? You didn't tell me. She's like, Oh, I didn't.
SPEAKER_00And it's with Nikolai and it's a flower shop, like name dropping and shit.
SPEAKER_01And then Claire's like, I need $1,200 for crossroads.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And now one person is like $1,200. Like, that's a in 2001, that might be like a mortgage payment. Yeah, like nobody's even like that's a lot of money. They're just like, but what is that? And it's like, oh, I did it, but I didn't tell you, I lied, and they're just like, okay, like nobody fucking bats an eye.
SPEAKER_00No, because they're all in their own world being their own main characters, so like, yeah, sure, like you guys would jump off the bridge, I'll sign the paper.
SPEAKER_01But I wondered if Ruth didn't react because Hiram was there.
SPEAKER_00Oh, maybe she was trying to play it cool, not sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she's gonna have an outburst later.
SPEAKER_00But it's interesting because she didn't dismiss Claire, she wasn't just like, Oh, we'll talk about it later, right? Like, she wasn't even like trying to parent Claire, she was just like, Okay, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I like because for sure I thought that she would have something to say about that, you know, like, no, you're not going, you're too young, but like whatever, but she didn't say anything about it, and then Nate kind of went to bed for her, so that was cool.
SPEAKER_00And so Nate goes home with Brenda and they find this kid.
SPEAKER_01Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. After dinner, we forgot this. After dinner is when the boys are cleaning up and Ruth is sitting with Hiram on the couch and she's kind of like laying in his lap.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I forgot about that.
SPEAKER_01And she says, I wish you had met my husband. Yeah, and it's like on one hand, I get it because obviously Senior was a huge part of her life, but I don't think Hiram wants to hear that. And he I give him a lot of credit because he really you could see he's a little like taken aback by it, but he doesn't really react. So I give him some credit because that that's a very weird thing to be told.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it is. Yeah, but okay, it it rubbed me the wrong way too. I just forgot that happened. But just to shoot through the rest of the show, um, Nate goes home with Brenda and they find this weird gift basket waiting for them. And as they start investigating it, they see that it's full of like all this like sexy time stuff, this really like jiggly silicone y dildo, and like that's hostile underwear and some condoms, and it's like, oh, and it's from Billy.
SPEAKER_01But why is the dildo hostile? Why why is it like what makes a dildo hostile?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I feel like Nate in that moment just needed to give a reaction. That's the word that came, I guess. Which word association, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Nate finally asks her about the matching tattoos, but yeah, and the way that he said it was like so interesting, and she wasn't trying to fight it this time, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And she's just like, Oh, like we were drunk in Vegas, but then she gets distracted by the basket, and that's like the end of the story.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I was like, wait, but like, no, because it was more intentional because you gave it that power earlier in the other episodes. So why are you trying to blow it off? But I'm sure we'll get through it in the next episode, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And like, I don't know, the contents of the basket are a little like brother sister, but who knows? Like, I mean, you know, that's the thing, too.
SPEAKER_00She was trying to like blow it off by being like, Oh, well, Billy's bipolar. I think that's the first time she said that too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then she's like, Oh, he likes you. Trust me, it'd be worse if he didn't. But it's just, I mean, would you think about if if your sister was going away for a weekend, like would you make her a basket like this?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_01But that's what I'm saying. It's it's a little weird, and I'm not saying that they can't have that relationship, I'm just saying that it's a little weird.
SPEAKER_00It wasn't in like a gad gift type way, and you know it. Exactly, exactly, and that's the that's the line crossed right there. Yeah, speaking of the line crossed, it was just the next scene with David's just so interesting. He's settling in for the evening with a nice glass of milk, a clean towel, some military porn, and then he's rudely interrupted by Mr. Church Guy complaining about gay people, which was just such a line to be crossed, right there, and like how contradicting that whole scene was.
SPEAKER_01This is the worst jerk golf scene ever, I swear to god. Like, David brushes his teeth, pours a glass of milk, and leaves a perfectly clean folded towel in his lap. David, please loosen up.
SPEAKER_00The worst part is is like you think he had military on the brain? He was like, Oh, I gotta see that military porn. And now he's thinking about the dead guy.
SPEAKER_01Like he barely got to get into it.
SPEAKER_00But it's the fact that like he chose that genre, or not that genre, but like right, that role play, whatever. Like, it's just weird. Like the fact that I aligned that's like people who like match like their socks to their underwear, and then they're like, Oh, it was an accident, yeah, yeah, sure. Every fucking day of your life, like that's what I mean. I don't know. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, do you like my note?
SPEAKER_00Also, David didn't spit after brushing his tongue. I guess he's about swallower. Stop! Oh my god, that's so funny. Yeah, Lisa said, I don't know if you guys heard. I said also David didn't spit after brushing his tongue. I guess he's a swallower. And that was funny.
SPEAKER_01Brush your tongue, I get that, but then like, how do you not spit?
SPEAKER_00The whole point is to get the gunk out. I don't know, he's a gunk swallower. The next morning, Nate wants to show David a video he found in Vic stuff. But then what he does is that he just clicks play on David's remote and the military porn starts playing again.
SPEAKER_01And it's it's at like the same exact spot that David left it in the night before, so it's like apparently he never even went back to it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, David probably just laid there like what is my life?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like had his glass of milk and let Kriegenthaler ruin his night.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god. So Claire um had like it been mentioned earlier in the episode, I forgot exactly where, about Claire taking the PSAT. I think when she was talking to her counselor, and um the counselor pointed out that like obviously she cares about her future enough of it to be taking like the PSAT. Like, why would you take that if you don't plan on going to college or taking the SAT, right? So Claire's in the library, like maybe studying for that PSAT.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she has like books up, but we don't I don't think she's studying.
SPEAKER_00She's just in her own world again, and she keeps having like these weird hallucinations. Like, there are these three girls from class that like turned to her when she got in trouble about like the whole algebra thing earlier, and so she sees them in the library, and she like makes eye contact with one of them. The girl who makes eye contact with her was like she had a weird fucking face. I just wanted to point that out. Like the way she looked up was like with like her mouth wide open. And Claire walks over to them to talk to them, and that's when the hallucination starts. And she's like, she's pretty much telling them, like, what's the point of going to college? Like, what do you see in your future for like following the system?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like what what does she she says something like, what did you end up as, or something something like that, and and then one is sitting with a baby, and she's like, Oh, I got married, I have two kids, blah blah blah. Basically, like I'm paraphrasing, but I have a perfect life. The other one was a TV executive, and then the other one had like ovarian cancer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like one is like the most successful, one is like the most realistic, and then one is like the chance never given. Oh, that's how I saw it. Like, the most, like, not the most realistic. I'm sorry. No, I said that right. One is like what everybody expects. That the first girl was like, Oh, like I went to I'm gonna go to law school and I'm gonna practice law for eight years. Me and my husband are gonna be rich, and then we're gonna have two perfect kids. And then the middle woman was like, Yeah, I went to college and got my master's in French and lived in front in France for six months, and then I hated it. And I moved back home, became a TV executive, and now I have a little bit of a substance issue. And the last woman was like, Yeah, I went to college for this, and I opened up this business with my friend, then I got over the green cancer and died before 30. Yeah, it's like there, like you can waste your life in so many ways, but they all have the same common denominator of like it started with college, and then this is where your life could go. And it's just weird that like Claire has these outlooks on life because I feel like life can kind of go in that direction anyway without college. So I don't really know what her point of having that hallucination was, but she thought it was fucking hilarious. So she's just standing there laughing at these girls who are trying to study, and they're like, What a freak. Right. Which I literally like said it with the girl who said what a freak, and I forgot that. And I'm like, fucking typical.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Speaking of typical, David.
SPEAKER_01Wait, wait, wait, but then when she finally does, when when she finally does have to take the PSATs, she's using the bubbles to make to fill in a picture of a skull and crossbones. Like, she obviously is not even taking it seriously.
SPEAKER_00Okay, I skipped over that part because I was trying to like rush through the end of the episode. Oh, so I like completely skipped over that, and I skipped over in your notes, which was funny. But yeah, I I remember like I saw the beginning of that scene, I didn't know where it was going, but I was like, I don't care, bye. And um, I saw like when the girls was filling in the bubbles, and I'm like, wait, there's like fucking 17 bubbles for one question. How do they know? It looks so confusing that scantron.
SPEAKER_01I I know, but that's the point. I don't think that she was, you know, she was just making pictures, yeah. She don't give a fuck, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And so David meets with Father Jack regarding Clark, who think he thinks maybe divisive. I had to sound that one out in my head. Hi, the worst part was that I was using like the phonics techniques of like tapping out on my fingers. I am a wreck, yeah. David thinks that Clark is Father Jack is blah. Anyway, this is David just like doing some bullshit, and they get on the topic of happiness. And David likes Clark, but thinks that church should say like sanctuary. And I feel like he's saying that church should still be like, hey, like we shouldn't bring our own views into church, it should just stay the way it is, because of the conversation he had with Mr. Churchman about like anti-gay stuff.
SPEAKER_01But I did appreciate this scene because when they talked about happiness, it just it just seemed a lot deeper, and I feel like there was an underlying meaning because I'm thinking that Jack knows what David's hiding.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's so it's such a pink elephant in the corner of the room, you know what I mean? Yeah, and maybe it's just like oh, the church should be a sanctuary, like church can still be a sanctuary, even if it's with values for people, you know, this decade, yeah, with like respect and tolerance and happiness and love and acceptance, exactly.
SPEAKER_01Wouldn't it also be a sanctuary if you didn't have to hide who you were? Um I mean, I don't know. I feel like if you pray to a god whose basic message is love thy neighbor, you know, like it's it's about love, you shouldn't be worried about him hating you.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, back down the Fisher basement where I probably should be. Rico answers the phone and it's Mr. Giartie, or I'm sorry, Gillardi. And who is the guy trying to bother?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's that's the other, was it Croner?
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes, Croner.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and so Rico answers the phone, and all you hear is him saying, Oh, like, hello, Mr. Gillardi. But then you don't know why he's calling, so it's like bum bum boom.
SPEAKER_00But you know that like Rico's kind of like pissed in this episode about the fact that he's a partner, so it was like things are like aligning for Rico, it seems, but not in a way that favors the family business.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because obviously he's still trying to take over the business, and he's he's so he's gonna talk to Rico, who's clearly not having a great day. So I guess we'll have to stay tuned to see how that plays out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, in the meantime, we see Ruth at her new job and she's doing amazing. Although she doesn't have like a weird happiness meltdown because I'm sorry, she does have a weird happiness meltdown because flowers have always represented death and sadness, and she she tries to be all philosophical, and she's like, so interesting to see flowers being something for the first time, like that, whatever. And Nikolai tells her not to worry, they get funerals too.
SPEAKER_01He's like, Don't worry, we get funerals too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because she was doing the arrangement for like a wedding, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she looks so perfect, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like if she she's um Victor's friends are now at the chapel and they're saying like goodbye to him, and he's done up really nice, and like you could tell, like they're all like wounded warriors because like so many of them are like in wheelchairs and stuff like that, which makes sense because of like what we know from Victor's story from Paul. And so when Paul arrives to pick up like the ashes, he sees all this and he's pissed. But Nate manages to smooth things over in the way that Nate always does, and they end up having a ceremony for him at the National Cemetery, and then Paul even gets like one of those like folded flags that's like to commemorate like a fallen soldier.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he doesn't even want it after they hand it to him after the ceremony. Paul hands it to Nate, it's like give it to one of his friends. I like I I I get it, Paul, but but this is your brother, and if you I know you loved your brother, but you should respect what he wanted to. Yeah, it it's it's tough.
SPEAKER_00Before they leave the cemetery, it was really cute. Um, Nate pulls David in for a hug and says he loves him. And David, it takes David a minute again. Nate's being rejected, and finally, David reciprocates. So Nate got the I love you that he needed this episode, but it was from his brother and not his girlfriend.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But I like this because David, I'm sorry. Nate when Nate is talking to Paul, you know, Paul's saying, I know what my brother wanted, and and Nate's telling him, you know, with all due respect, I think your brother was afraid to tell you what he wanted. And that really affects Paul because it hurts him to think that his brother couldn't tell him what he wanted. And I think that that definitely resonates not only in Nate, but in David. So when Nate pulls him in and he's like, I love you. And you know, I think you have a moment where you actually see David legit reciprocate the feelings, you know, and and acknowledge, like, okay, at the end of the day, this is my brother first, not just like my gopher.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And so then later on that evening, Nate arrives to pick up Brenda for their getaway, but Billy immediately tells him she can't go, like, that Brenda can't go because she has to be his eyes and pick photos for a show. And he starts going on the tangent how, like, what's gonna happen when like I can't have your eyes anymore, and you can't see, and Brenda's like, that's not gonna happen. And he's like, But they're just shapes, there used to be like messages, and and like he's trying to like be like a troubled artist, yeah.
SPEAKER_01It was just a weird moment, and then Brenda's like, Okay, well, I'm gonna tell to Nate outside, and Billy's like, Well, fuck her some other time, yeah, which is just like it goes right along with the basket message that he sent. Yeah, and oh sorry, no, I was just gonna say, like, Nate accuses him of manipulating Brenda, and then Brenda's like, Do you think I fucked my brother? Uh whoa, Brenda, what the fuck? Nobody said that. Yeah, even if I was kind of thinking it, I didn't say it.
SPEAKER_00But but that's exactly it. Like, unless she's trying to read the room and she thinks that's the read, and it's like you only think that's the read because you're putting that out there, right? Don't put out that energy, and you won't have to read the room that way. Yeah, just like fucking act normal.
SPEAKER_01I can see how that scene earlier with her in the bathrobe, like leaning over him, like that. That's why I'm saying, like, with the callback, because there's an intimacy there that's probably that probably doesn't exist in a lot of sibling relationships.
SPEAKER_00I don't have a brother, so I can't say yeah, neither do I, and I think about that a lot, but I've never seen brothers and sisters act like that in real life. Yeah, I don't know. I I feel like I can only come with a certain approach because I don't know what it's like to like have that relationship, and I'll never know what that's like, so I'll never have that dynamic to understand like, is this completely weird or not? But the way that's being portrayed in this episode is supposed to be interpreted that way, right? And so Nate, like while they're talking outside, Nate's like he asked how he can help, and Brenda just shuts him down. She's like, just go to the desert and forget everything, including us.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I didn't see that coming. No, but then that's how the episode ends.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they really started off on such a high note. I know, I just don't know. So, quickly, just to run through show notes, I'm on six percent, and I don't know where my charter is. And it starts lagging at five. Okay, just to go through the show notes, Claire reads Don Hor. Oh my god, I got stuck on it again.
SPEAKER_01I I've never read the book, but I feel like that might be a nod to her incessant like desire for her teenage love affairs. I don't know if I'm looking too deep into it. That's okay. Pretty much all of her scenes involve her imagination, the math teacher, Ruth and Hiram, and the library girls. I think the only one that didn't was her and um the counselor guy. There's the brotherhood theme, right? The army is like the brotherhood. You have Nate and David, and then also Paul and Vic. And then we get more about the Ruth and Hiram dynamic, especially the the points about her new job and her ask and her saying that she wishes that he met Nate Sr. But whatever. And then at the end, it's like I was like, Did Brenda and Nate break up? Don't answer, but it it was just a weird it's just like forget everything, including us, like maybe for the weekend or like forever.
SPEAKER_00Peace, Brenda. I honestly I feel like that's a perfect note to end on, too, because it'll pick up in the next episode, which is titled Crossroads. Gee, I wonder what it's about. Yeah, I wonder if um we're gonna get neat flashbacks in the next episode. Maybe he was like David until he went to Crossroads and then he loosened up. Maybe, yeah, and so with that, friends. I forgot how we end the show. Drive safe, buy us coffee or wine.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, do all the stuff. Don't drink and drive, especially that, and buy us all the stuff, send us money and emails and stuff, and uh, we gotta go to bed.
SPEAKER_00I have to be up in like six hours.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, and her her computer's at like five percent, so yeah, yeah. Thank you everyone for hanging out with us and listening to this episode, assassinsips.com. Don't drink and drive. I'm Lisa, and I'm Brittany, and we are out of here until next time, guys.
SPEAKER_00Good night, friends.
