Hi, and welcome to Stats and Stips, your weekly or bi-weekly watch-rewatch show featuring us, Lisa, and Brittany. Yes, there you go. Uh today we're gonna talk about Six Feet Under, the episode entitled Driving Mr. Moss back, which is season two, episode four, and it originally aired 324, 2002. Wow, how long ago was that? Yeah, it was many years. 21-ish years ago. 20 years ago. 20, almost 22 years ago.
SPEAKER_02Wow. All right. Almost 20. Yeah, I was gonna say it's definitely over 21 years at this point. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, before we jump into the episode, housekeeping. The pre-show is available. As you guys have noticed, more and more there's more available, more episodes available, like subscription. So definitely go check those out. And somebody asked me what's the difference between the subscription and the Patreon. So quickly stated, the subscription just gives you the access to the bonus episodes, it'll give you access to all of those. However, on Patreon, you'll still get all of those episodes as well as any video that we post. You'll also get like a uh like a welcome gift from us. Get all sorry, Kat is trying to rub up against the computer. Um and you will get the same episodes, but you will get them sooner and without any ads if we ever have to put any in.
SPEAKER_03So you're telling me if you join Patreon, you get a little gift and you get our episodes way earlier.
SPEAKER_01But I wouldn't say way earlier because I don't want anybody to be disappointed, but you do get them sooner than you would in the RSS feed only.
SPEAKER_03I was gonna say way in my definition, would be like a day.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, a day or two days. So like way earlier.
SPEAKER_03But if you do the subscription, then you're just getting access to our episodes when they get generally posted. Like the extra episode.
SPEAKER_01With the extra all the time.
SPEAKER_03But like the Patreon, you're getting much more a plus little gift. And if I remember, it's like our cute little gifts, the pink and purple ones.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, there's the color change pubs, their stickers, coasters, um, you know, like a few other little goodies. Plus, you get whatever video, like there's some videos, most of them are still like back from lost. There's the interview that I did with Andrea Gabriel. So all that you get access to all those videos there. Um, but yeah, so that that's the only difference, really. Um, you get everything that you would get with the subscription, but a little bit more if you are on Patreon, in case you're just wondering, like if you wanted to support us in that way, but didn't know what the difference was or which one you should pick. That's it. But yeah. And now on to important topics. What are you drinking?
SPEAKER_03I actually I I gave in to the hype, and I went to not Target, but I went to Marshall's and I bought a fake Stanley cup, like the fucking tumbler with the handle. Like I think who the fuck I am, and it's got the straw and it fits in my cup holder, and I can hold two cups at the same time because it's just a handle. It was like way more than half the price because those cups are like 40-50 bucks, which is dumb. And I paid like 15 for this one, and so uh the liquid inside the cup is just water at the moment, but I really want to change out my fake Stanley cup for a wine glass. And so I was actually gonna ask you should I drink red or should I drink white or should I drink orange cream tickle? Um, I think it's everywhere today because I'm drinking red, I don't even know what kind of red this is.
SPEAKER_01Alex brought a bottle home from work and I took it, and I didn't even really look at it, I just opened it and poured it. So I don't I don't know what it is. Last bottle up my alley. Uh-huh. I was like, oh, there's a bottle of wine. Let me just open it and drink it. And that's what I did. And I have no idea what kind of wine this is, but it tastes good. So it had a white label, that's all I remember. And it wasn't a twist off, it was a cork uh corkscrew. Um a bottle with effort. Yeah, it was a bottle with effort, and the little foil on top was plastic. So that's all I can remember about the bottle.
SPEAKER_03No snifflies, no hangover from that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so alright, so you'll be drinking red in a minute. I'm sure you'll you'll have your delivery any moment now. Yes.
SPEAKER_03Oh, Jeffy. No, I'm kidding. Yeah, but yeah, I'll be right back. I'm gonna go get mine. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, while we wait for her to actually just text Jeff and make him bring you one. Oh my god, that's such a better idea. I'm texting you.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Now reading for the viewers. Alrighty, guys. So this episode driving Mr. Moss back is all about honestly, it's all about Nate's journey with his AVM again. But then we have a little sprinkle of David, a little sprinkle of Keith, a little sprinkle of Claire, and even Ruth. Nate and Claire travel to Seattle and stay with Nate's friend with occasional benefits, and former co-worker Lisa, not our Lisa, but other Lisa. Um before retrieving the body. And who's Nate sleeping with? No, I'm kidding. Um and former coworker Lisa before retrieving the body of Mr. Harold Boss back. He ended up dying in Seattle.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, I was gonna say, I'm not sleeping with Nate, but he did age pretty well, so I mean, I might not kick him out of bed. I don't know. He plays a firefighter on 911, so I I see him like current date.
SPEAKER_03Oh shit, seriously? Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01I'm like not up to date with what our friends are doing, besides um Yeah, no, I I didn't know he was in that show when I started watching it with the Maris, and we were like, I was like, Oh, it's Nate, and she's like, it's Bubby. And she's oh no, I see like British. She's like, it's Bubby. I'm like, yeah, but it's also Nate. And she's like, okay, it's Bubby.
SPEAKER_03Okay, but okay. Um, sorry. No, no, it's okay. Mr. Mossback dies in Seattle, but like his family's in LA, the Fisher funeral home's in LA, and so how are they gonna get it? Nate and Claire go to get him, and that's where they stay with Lisa, but we'll get into that later. Uh, Mr. Mossback, who died on the tour bus after his children insisted that he must be driven and not flown. Um, while Nate and Claire are there, Nate has an attack related to JDM, like I said, and he ends up reconnecting with Lisa in a Bao Chikawa type way.
SPEAKER_01Uh did you think so? I didn't think so. But okay.
SPEAKER_03I kind of I don't know. We're gonna talk about her look when they left, when we get to it. But David babysits for Keith's niece after her mother disappears, which I can't wait to get into that piece of shit mother, but anyway. Um Brenda's mother, talk about piece of shit mothers, becomes obsessed with her father's infidelity. Ruth tries to make amends with the people from her past in line with the plan, um, and she has mixed results.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And so going into the beginning of this episode, starting with the title card, we have Mr. Harold Mossback. And his name's actually in the title of this episode, which I thought was really interesting. He's on a tour bus, it's called Roadway Tours in Seattle, Washington, and he's seeing the sites like the Public Market Center and the Farmers Market and all that like water bullshit in Seattle. And then we hear the tour guide, I believe her name was Karen. Yes, it was. She's in that, I mean it should be, so no, and that's the thing, it is, so it's just really consistent with the definition of a Karen.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, especially 20 years ago.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, even know. Yeah, especially.
SPEAKER_01I feel bad for the Karen's that aren't Karen's, but my neighbor's name is Karen, but she's actually very nice.
SPEAKER_03Well, that's the thing, all of the little fucking Gen Z are like looking Karen, and like I feel bad for the people with the name who aren't Karen by social definitions. But yeah, anyway, getting too into this now. Yeah. Um, so okay, let me let me speed this up for you.
SPEAKER_01Can I speed this up for you?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, go ahead. It's okay, because I have like so many theories about what happened, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01They're on a bus tour. Yeah, no, I I read them all. They're on a bus tour of Seattle. It's like a bunch of a bus filled with a bunch of old people. They're all on this tour. They're seeing all the sites, like the Pike Place Market, this, that, the other. They get out, they stop the bus, they tell them to get out for lunch, except one person doesn't get out. So Karen, who needs a fucking cigarette, is like, um, it's lunchtime. She goes, she realizes that he's dead, and she's like, We got another dead one back here. To the bus driver. So apparently that's a thing, like people dying on that bus, but I guess that's similar to like the cruise ship.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, only if you go with my cousin. What does that mean?
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. I've been on two cruises in my life, okay? My cousin has been on two cruises in his life. Just so happened that both of those cruises we were together, right? Both times there was a dead body that you saw, or so the first the first time the boat had gone to port. I I don't remember what country we were in. It was like maybe Honduras. He didn't get off the ship. He wanted to stay on the ship, he didn't want to get out. So basically, the whole rest it was every it was with all Alex's family the first time. It was like, but my mom and my cousin came from like my mom's side. So they came too. So everyone went their separate ways. Like, some people went to the beach, some people did whatever. Like, we all we all just got off the ship, did whatever. He was like, nah, I don't really want to do anything. I'm just gonna stay on the ship and relax. He probably wanted a break from my mom, but anyway, so because they were sharing a room, so he stays on the ship and he goes out into his balcony to have a cigarette, and the next thing he knows, he's like, What's that floating in the water? Oh my god. He filmed the whole thing. There was a body floating, and they had to come and like get it. So we were just like, when we got back to the ship, he's like, Oh my god, do you know what happened? And we were like, Oh, what happened? And he's like, Look, and he's showing, and and now this is also like my Amaya wasn't even born yet. The older girls were I didn't even have to pay for a plane ticket for them, let's put it that way. Okay, they were like one and two, two and three, they were babies, they were they were toddlers, you know. So the phone quality of the video was not great, you know, but like you could see enough, and you're like, oh yeah. So that was that was the first cruise. The second time was the next year, and we went and we went with like my mom's family, and my cousin stayed in the room with his dad, and they had a suite. So the suite was like at the front of the boat, I guess. Like it was a beautiful room. It was like towards the front of the boat. And then where we sailed from New York to the Caribbean. So as we're sailing, you're like two days at sea. So on like the second, you're like two full days at sea before you get to a destination. So as we're sailing, all of a sudden they get like an announcement and they're like, We have to we have to make like an unscheduled stop. There's a passenger on board who needs medical attention. So basically, the ship, you're so far into the ocean that you don't like see the coast or whatever, but the ship had to pull in towards the coast in order for like the Coast Guard or somebody to come. So we were probably like North Carolina, somewhere down there when this happened. Yeah and they had to, they had a helicopter, so like the Coast Guard comes out and like the ship has to like dock off the coast. Like we weren't close enough to the coast where it was like, oh, they can see people, it's just like close enough that they could meet us. So we're like all in their room trying to like look up because the the the landing is there, and you're just seeing like this this lady was there, and she's just like upset, she's crying, and she's this and she's that, and we're like, oh my god, and then like you can't see the person that they're putting, and we're like that person, like we're pretty sure he's dead because what the fuck? Like what the fuck? They had it, they took the person in the helicopter, but it didn't, it was just like a helicopter, it didn't look like one of those Medevac. I could be wrong, like I the the guy could have been totally fine, it didn't it didn't appear that way, like when we were on this ship and the way the people around were reacting, like the crowd, we were like something really bad, like happened, yeah. And then the host the helicopter came and like took them away. Like, don't go on a cruise with my cousin. I mean, you won't die, but you'll see somebody.
SPEAKER_03No, well, that's what like people say, like cruise ship workers say that that's what happens. Like a lot of like older people go on a bunch of cruises, and they I guess that's what they do with like their retirement and stuff. Like, especially people who don't have families, I guess that's what they do. They go and they finally I think it happens often enough that like cruise ships are prepared with like a storage facility.
SPEAKER_01That's what that's the only thing that makes me question whether he was dead. Because I'm like, if he was dead, why not just stick him in the freezer? Like, I'm sure that there's like a morgue on board. Yeah, because I feel like this is not an uncommon occurrence, but I don't know, maybe the lady was like, no, or because it from the rumors that we heard, it sounded like the person had like a very serious heart attack. Now they're rumors, oh shit. I don't know, I don't know, you know, but it's like the food is all included, and so you're eating like all this shit food all fucking day long. So this man probably had like 76 sausages and bacon that morning, like because it's it's all included. So I could um I could see how people will get like really sick and have like medical issues on cruises.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, it's a thing to like like if you want to go down like an internet spiral, definitely look into that. Yeah, I think uh yeah, I guess it's the same thing with bus tours, apparently. Yeah, and his kids have something to say about that, but we'll shortly get to that. First, we gotta talk about Gary the guy's counselor, TN at this party. We're in Gary, yeah. Oh wait, I have we'll talk about Gary next episode too.
SPEAKER_01I have a a qu um a note, right? So you wrote that it's August because they say that they've been dating for eight months.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I didn't know we wanted to go into that at the end of the episode.
SPEAKER_02Um, okay, we can.
SPEAKER_03Or we can talk about it now. No, I think we get through like the events of the episode and then we'll make our comments.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Okay, so Gary TM.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Gary is now like a figure. Um, Claire's we're in Gary's office pretty much. Claire's standing as far away from Gary as possible when talking to him about the gate interrogation from the last episode. Remember, like the officer came in. The detective came in, was questioning Claire. They remember.
SPEAKER_01Don't worry about it. They remember.
SPEAKER_03Uh-huh. Yeah, I know I'm splaining. Um, but like at the same time, like the producers, you mansplained in like Taylor. I you know, I do be in. Um, but the producers of like this episode are like, no, you can't forget his name's Gary. They fucking put his name seriously, big ass fucking Gary name on a mug, and they keep like flashing it towards us, and like it's a prompt that was like brought in for a specific reason, but like really he had to put his fucking name huge on the mug. But anyway, I know. Casey Clara's telling Gary, yeah, right. No, or in case, yeah, in case he forgets his own name, honestly, truly. Um, because you know as viewers were not. Clara tells Gary that they sent a letter to my mother and threatened to suspend me if I didn't, referencing her not coming to her like her counseling session. Right because Gary's like, you missed the last three seconds, yeah. And so I guess they're sending letters home about this.
SPEAKER_01You have in your notes that don't you think that this should have raised a red flag for Ruth? Like something's going on in school, yes, and then it it made me think about something else that should have been a red flag. The fucking police questioned Claire, and we didn't even really bat an eye about it. Like, she is a minor. Why wasn't her parent informed? And now I get it, she has this relationship with Keith where it's kind of like you know, whatever. But the thing is, like, be but that but her going to Keith happened after the police came to question her. So why wasn't the school like, hey, we need to get your parent here instead of oh, here's Gary.
SPEAKER_03I have two things to say about that. Number one, it was 2002. I mean um, and number two, no, but number two, maybe they thought it wasn't um like a big enough deal to get parents involved. But I would think for something like that, you do need parental permission. You can't just like go and interrogate a minor.
SPEAKER_01Exactly.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I get it, and then again, we're calling it an interrogation because that's really what it was, but they could have just called it something else. That's why they can get it.
SPEAKER_01No, I see it's like informal because they're not bringing her to the station, but I feel like the cops, like in that sense, like good on Gary for being there, but I feel like this is definitely something that Ruth should have been made aware of.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Gary should be authorized to cooperate with the police, too.
SPEAKER_01Right, like Claire should not have been forced to cooperate with them if her parent was like unaware.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. But um, along with that, along with like the police and the issues of last episode, Gary says that the police don't even know where Gabe is. And then Gary even calls Claire out on like her true feelings about Gabe, because she's like, I really don't give a flying shit where he is, and Gary's like, Yeah, you do. And Claire's like, Yeah, you're right. And he's like, Take out your anger on something in this room, and holds up the Gary mug, like to the camera.
SPEAKER_01Well, that was more like in the beginning. He was like, Oh, would it make you feel better to throw something? And yeah, and she was like, she kind of shrugged it off, but then like after the whole interaction, then she picks it up and throws it, so it's it's much more of a shock, and she's like, You're right, it did make me feel better.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it made me feel better too. That look was fucking dumb, yeah. And then and after this scene, we end up at Fisher and Sons, and we learn from Mr. Mossback's son and daughter that apparently his heart just like gave out, and his body's still in Seattle, but we find out that like it can't be flown where they're having the service because dad won't fly.
SPEAKER_01He was afraid to fly in life, and so the kids, while it's a little bit annoying, it's still kind of cute that the kids are honoring his wishes and not flying his body. So now they gotta figure out a plan B to get his body to California.
SPEAKER_03David gives us some funeral facts about. About how trains and dead bodies work. And he tells us like about Lincoln's fucking story. Like Lincoln was shipped from blah blah blah to blah blah blah.
SPEAKER_01She got such a kick out of that, and the the brother and sister were just kind of like, um okay.
SPEAKER_03You mean like fed it?
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And so things are kind of left up in the air about how Mr. Mastbach's getting back.
SPEAKER_01But they just I think David just tells them, like, no problem, we'll we'll do it like on a freight train. And they're like, okay, that's fine, as long as it's not flown.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and the train was the plan that they settled on.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_03Now we're at Carla's apartment where Taylor lives. That's her daughter. But Carla hasn't been around. Keith, his mom, and Taylor are discussing Keith's father's hernia surgery, which prompts his mother to leave Taylor for a few days. And like I said, Carla's not here. What a surprise. She's still supposed to be up in Oakland with this Derek guy. I don't know who the fuck Derek's supposed to be.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you wrote who's Derek. I thought that that was I don't know why or where, but I assumed it was an ex, possibly even Taylor's father. Like I got the impression that it was an ex and and the and may or may not be the kid's father. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I don't know. That was my feeling.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, I felt that way too, but like the way that they said his name, I was like, am I supposed to know who this person is? Only because they've mentioned his name before. Yeah. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I don't remember it being mentioned, but I don't remember much of the name.
SPEAKER_01I don't know if they mentioned who like how he fits in. Like what his relationship is. I don't know if they mentioned that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but we don't know where Carl it is because Keith's mom says that her one contact number was disconnected.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_03And since Keith's sister is still leaving her family high and dry, Keith's responsible for watching Taylor. Taylor's apprehensive about staying with Keith. And when he offers to like to have her bring her stuff to his apartment, she claims that he's probably gonna steal it.
SPEAKER_01Like why would I mean through adult eyes? I'm sorry, but it's like, why the fuck would this grown ass man steal your easy bake oven?
SPEAKER_03But yeah, no, like in all serious, yeah, the easy bake oven that David got.
SPEAKER_01But like, yeah, you know, from a kid's eyes, it's like it's so sad that this is her view of the world. You know, that she's so insecure.
SPEAKER_03She truly is, and it's really fucking upsetting to see like a child act like that because they feel like they have to, and you know, like this isn't the situation she wants to be in. Like the song, actually, and I've been noticing more about like the song choices in this episode. The song playing in the background, I don't know the name, I don't know who it's by, but like you hear the line, this is where I want to be, and you hear that line repeat a couple times, like it's like the chorus of the song that they're playing in the background, and it really speaks to like Taylor's inability to let go of her home, which is like that apartment that she's living in is the is the only stable thing, somehow. Somehow Carl is affording rent on top of like drugs, but it's the only stable thing Taylor has. Her parents aren't stable, who knows where her dad is, her mom's not stable at all. Even her grandmother, unfortunately, can't always be there for her. Like, yes, she's still there for her, but her grandmother has a whole life too.
SPEAKER_01And even the grandmother is a little I think her name was Lucille.
SPEAKER_03I have to do this.
SPEAKER_01Like, I forgot her name, but maybe I it like she even she seems a little erratic. It's like on one hand, she's bitching about Carla, on the other hand, she's bitching about Keith, but then it's like okay, can we just all work together? I mean, I don't know. It's hard not to see how this kid is like I don't even know the word, like I can't think of the word, but yeah, anyway.
SPEAKER_03It's just pitiful, like all around.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like this kid is going through some shit, and it it just like I know that the family is there to help her, but it's it's understandable how she may not see it that way. That's all.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So we're gonna take a pause actually from Taylor and Keith's little journey that they go on together, and we're gonna actually join the Fisher family at their dinner table. Um, this is one of those times where you see David, Nate, Claire, and Ruth all at the table together, and David's actually like explaining that situation about how the deceased Mr. Mossback can't be flown. And I spelled flown within the phone.
SPEAKER_01I know. I didn't have a chance to like correct the misspellings, but I know it should be.
SPEAKER_03I when I was doing the show notes, I like what I do is that I watch a little bit and then I pause it, and then I type, and then I click play, and I watch a little bit and I pause it. But that's like my second watch where I do the show notes. And HBO or Max, whatever, like started doing this thing that like if you pause for long enough, meaning like maybe like for a whole two minutes, and then you click play, they like rewind it a little bit so that's why like you can but it was like fucking me up, so I was like trying to deal with that and type, and like anyway. Um, David's explaining the current situation that the deceased can't be flown, and that it's not his family's wishes, and the free trains are all backed up for the next week, and Amtrak's not gonna be able to deliver the body until Tuesday, and this body needs to make its way to down to LA. And Nate says that's not a problem. He even offers to go to Seattle and then drive him down the refrigerated van.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Nate says, So, well, he offers that, and David is like, Oh, that's awesome, but like you don't even need the refrigerated van because he's already embalmed.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he's like, Well, we can upcharge renting a moving van, exactly, and so this is a perfect situation for Nate. He gets to go back, see some friends, pick up the shit that he left there from fucking Christmas. That was the last time he was back at his home in Seattle. Like, he flew in for Christmas, his dad died. He never left.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and he never left.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and honestly, I forgot about that until this episode. I don't know about you. It like kind of slipped my mind.
SPEAKER_01Me too. Me too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. For like for two seasons in, it definitely slipped my mind. Yeah. Um and yeah, so Mr. Mossback's already embalmed, and so David figures out that he can figure a way for the family to actually pay for Nate's one-way ticket. Right. David wants Nate to leave tomorrow. That's when Roots like consciously joins the dinner table with some off-key conversation about David's love life and proceeds to tell him the door to your home only opens from the inside. Nate chuckles to himself because it's fucking bullshit. Like we all know. She goes and continues to find out. I didn't know what you meant.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I didn't know what you meant by this.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so she continues to bury herself alive, 86 embalming fluid.
SPEAKER_01Oh, like without the embalming flu.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yes, like like. Okay, I just I thought too much about it.
SPEAKER_01Got it, got it, got it.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_01No, it's okay.
SPEAKER_03Like, like instead of burying herself embalmed, like you have to be apparently. We learned that season one. It's like funeral law, you have to be embalmed if you're being buried. She buries herself alive, 86 the embalming fluid, but then asking Claire why Gabriel hasn't been around lately. We're just just starting shit at the dinner table, but honestly, I don't think she really thinks she's starting shit. I think she's just trying to open up her own door to her own home from the inside. And um, yeah, so Claire tells her mom that Gabe like joined some fucking like little religious thing.
SPEAKER_05The Hari Krishna's having a yeah, the Hari Krishna.
SPEAKER_03She goes, he shaves his head, she's like, Yeah, I don't want to talk about this anymore. And Nate and David realize, like, oh shit, like, mom doesn't know like what we know from episode three, season two. So you know, Nate then actually kind of steers the conversation a little bit away from Claire, but includes Claire by asking Ruth if Claire can come with him to Seattle to pick up the body.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, David is like Ruth, I shall do her homework, and yeah, because David is like, oh, they're not gonna pay for a second ticket, and Nate's like, okay, I'll pay for it myself. And Ruth is like, oh, but she has school, and they convince her, and she's like, I forgot what she says, but something like, Oh, I guess it doesn't matter anyway. Like, I I've oh man, I I can't, but she just basically like acknowledges that they're all like kind of shitty in a sense, and like whatever, she gives up. Like, she doesn't even feel like no, you have to go to school. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03She says, Ruth says, I'm tired of trying to be the architect of this family. It's high time you drew your own blueprints. And she gets up and she walks away. And David turns around and he goes, Does anyone know what the fuck she's talking about anymore? No, no one does. David's colorful language as this series continues.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, change of scene. Brenda's bathroom. Brenda's bathroom? Like, can I just say when we get to this scene, Nate is in the bathroom flossing his teeth in front of the mirror. Brenda walks in, pops a squat on the toilet, puts a magazine on the floor, starts reading it. They have this conversation about him going to Seattle, yada yada yada. And Brenda's like, could you not floss your teeth? You know, I hate that. You just fucking walked into the bathroom and he was already in there.
SPEAKER_03But anyway, yeah, she came in with full tune, and I couldn't figure out why. I actually went back to last week's show notes because I'm like, did I miss something? And that's when I was thinking about that conversation. No, well, the only thing I could think of is like, you remember when she was flirting with that guy in the bar? And then you remember like the conversation they had about her first day of class where she like literally stayed there for like two and a half minutes and then she left and gave up. And then they were talking about like their view on life, and she said that like this has just always been my view because of my fucked up childhood. She pretty much said that. And Nate's like, well, I believe in spirituality, and she I just thought like because of their disagreement, she was getting I just didn't think that that was like that big of a deal.
SPEAKER_01Me either. I could be wrong. I I took it to be a whole um to be spillover from like everything going on with Billy. Yeah, maybe. But I I never even considered that it had anything to do with the dinner last week until I read it in your notes. So I don't know. Yeah. But anyway, he he just says, like, you know, um he asks her if it was like weird or something that he didn't invite her to go to Seattle, and Brenda's just like, no, it's fine. But he keeps asking, and she's like, okay, well, like now it's weird. But I don't know, like whatever. Like Brenda, you're a fucking sack of rocks right now. So I she was she was being a window fucking noodle.
SPEAKER_02I know it's just being weird.
SPEAKER_01I'm not saying that she's not going through a hard time, but if he's just going there, like even before we meet Lisa and all of that, but if you're just basing it on like her her like general attitude these days, I could understand why he would just want to like spend time with his sister and take care of business. And he also hasn't told her about his AVM, so I mean he's keeping shit from her, she's keeping shit from him. It's like it's it's really putting a strain on the relationship. So like I get it. I mean, even like I said, even before Lisa's there, it's like, oh, it makes more sense now, but but I got it before. So yeah, yeah. I really like your little like um chapter names. Oh, thank you. I tried. 10,000 feet in the air with Claire and Nate.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, 10,000 feet in the air with Claire and Nate. And at this point, Claire and Nate are on the plane, and Claire reads through a magazine on the plane, and Nate tries to relate to Claire about her interest. She's reading about like some concert, some venue, and Nate was like, Well, you need to be 18 older, be at the venue. She's talking about her fake ID. Nate's like, Yeah, like I had one too, like, it's not that big of a deal. And like Claire just can't get over the fact that like Nate was once her age, and maybe they have the same interest. And Nate's trying to like break that barrier down with Claire to actually have a relationship with them. Don't forget, when Claire was born, Nate was leaving for college, he was leaving Seattle, she never grew up with him. They're pretty much like stranger, stranger siblings. Yeah, yeah. Sibling strangers, yeah. So Claire sees through this whole conversation and asks if Nate only wanted her to go because like he thinks that she needs a distraction from everything going on with Gabe, and he doesn't admit to that. But while they're on the plane, Claire goes, Oh yeah, and where are we staying? Which I thought was like, how do you not know that before you leave? Like, I don't know, maybe she's a kid, maybe she wasn't thinking about that. And Nate says that they're staying with his friend Lisa, who he apparently did not have any previous relations with. But Claire doesn't bow that they were just strictly roommates.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. Claire's not stupid.
SPEAKER_03What happened?
SPEAKER_01I just Claire is not stupid.
SPEAKER_03Claire's not stupid, and she starts asking some questions about like what kind of person Lisa is, and that's when we learn that Lisa's a little bit like crunchy granoly, but Nate says she's not so easy to categorize. So now all of a sudden we're at Lisa's house in Seattle. Wow, what a house. What a that shit was huge, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like I'm thinking dope.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I could only surmise that it was like one floor in the house. Because realistically speaking, Seattle is a very expensive city, and they had a really nice view of space needle and down. Yeah, so unless that that house has like been in your family, I don't know how one person, especially one that works for like a co-op, I I I don't know much about them, but I assume that they don't pay very well, like that they're they're not showering you in riches. Um, I just can't see how like you would earn enough money to live there without a roommate or five and and then especially like Nate was your roommate and then he disappeared.
SPEAKER_03It's it's like yeah, and he's been gone for a while, right?
SPEAKER_01And like you're obviously paying the rent by yourself for eight months, so so I'm thinking like it's probably like a downstairs apartment and an upstairs apartment. But that's neither here nor there. It doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_03No, but it was really cool. It reminded me of um like the house in Sabrina the Teenage Book, like the TV series.
SPEAKER_01Um they were magical, and that's how they afforded it.
SPEAKER_03So yes, exactly. And so Lisa's really happy to see Nate, and she goes, It's good to have you back home. Like a really hugs him. She's interesting so far. Back at the Fisher residence, Ruth is doing housekeeping and not just cleaning her house, but cleaning her metaphorical house.
SPEAKER_01I am surprised that the Fisher house, the physical Fisher house, is still standing and then she didn't rub that shit into the ground.
SPEAKER_03Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she was rub, scrub, whatever.
SPEAKER_03Doing some like OCD type cleaning.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So she's she's doing the equivalent of like her making amends, like in your 12-step program. And so she's calling people first with Hiram, and she tells him about her drafting a new blueprint for herself. Obviously, he's like, Oh for the house, and she's like, No, for me. Um, the conversation ends with her telling him to like fuck off because he thinks that she wants to get back together. He was like, Have you been drinking? But he's like, No, I'm just I'm just trying not to like harbor any bad feelings. Um, I don't want to get back together. Fuck you, and hang up. Yeah, like um, she calls her friend Amelia to do the same thing. Um but she leaves a message for her because I guess she she's not home, she didn't answer, whatever, and she wanted to renew her friendship. She calls her sister Sarah. And but mind you, all of this is why she's continuing to like scrub. I mean, she scrubbed banisters, she scrubbed like everything. She's ironing, she's she's like out.
SPEAKER_03I don't know if you caught that when she was cleaning cleaner. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I caught that product last month.
SPEAKER_01Um, and she tells she she tells her sister, I don't like did did her sister answer, or was it a message that she left?
SPEAKER_03It was a message because she's like, I'm starting to think you don't want to talk to me anymore, which means that we really need to talk.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And then she crosses all their names off the list, and you could see that the only names left were Nate, David, and Claire. So that's that's that's in Ruth's future, I guess.
SPEAKER_03And actually, um we get to go deeper into that in our next episode.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, I didn't watch yet.
SPEAKER_03No, and obviously so, but you'll see what I mean. Like towards the end. I think it was like no no no no no no, don't tell me, don't tell me. I'm not telling you, I'm just telling you when we're gonna get back to this.
SPEAKER_01Okay, Keith on duty. I hate spoilers.
SPEAKER_03Keith was working, he's a copper, and he was doing his copper thing, and he's actually he was doing a detail on like some angry son-in-law that was holding his mother-in-law hostage at gunpoint, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because she like put the remote control in the garbage dispersal, and so he's holding her at gunpoint, yeah. Serious business, stupid, yeah. He probably wanted to watch Fox News.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, oh no, oh my god, but like, but someone had to pick up Taylor from school, and so Keith's like, I'm a little busy, I can't do it. And he calls Eddie, his boyfriend. Like, you remember? And um, but Eddie can't let his friends because Eddie's like doing a double like at work, he's an auntie, like he's he's a busy boy, and so Keith gets like all upset, but Keith gets upset, not in a way of like being disappointed that like he's gotta find a way to pick up Taylor. He more just like gets upset in a way that like shows that something else is going on between him and Eddie, like he literally says, Never mind, fuck it then, hangs up.
SPEAKER_01And I think taken at face value though, that's not fair. Like Keith accepted the responsibility, and Eddie is working.
SPEAKER_03That's what I mean. Like to have that reaction like that, like ugly, right? I don't know. I feel like something deeper is going on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I got an impression.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like easily anybody would. And Keith's partner is also kind of like frustrated, but in a way, God, just shoot her already so we can be done.
SPEAKER_02He's like, I have tickets to the Dodgers game, yeah, so fucking problematic.
SPEAKER_03Keith rolls his eyes and calls David. He asks David to do him the biggest favor to Taylor until he can pick her up, and he says, like, um, I'll pick her up from your house. David's really calm on the phone, but his expression like on his face seems really helpful.
SPEAKER_01And maybe he's gonna be like yeah, he got a smile on his face.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because he probably thinks this is how he can get back into Keith's good graces.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. I don't blame him though.
SPEAKER_03To Seattle. What does Frazier say? Meatloaf when he comes on. Oh morning, Seattle.
SPEAKER_01No, well, I don't think he records in the morning. It's like sorry, there was like um an emergency service vehicle going by, and on the camera, all of a sudden it like started flashing, so like it caught my eye, and I was like, what the hell? Sorry. Um yeah, it's it's like good afternoon Seattle, and then at night he's like goodnight Seattle. Oh, he goes, I'm listening. I'm listening, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's the thing. I'm listening. Yeah, but yeah, this episode really makes me think of Frazier, and now I want to watch Fraser. It's like it's like a soul food show. It is Meatloaf with Lisa, Meatloaf with Lisa. We're back in Seattle. I'm listening. Lisa, Nate, Claire. I'm losing my mind. I'm sorry, guys. I'm I'm throwing Fraser. Puns in there. Um, so we see Lisa, Nate, and Claire sitting on the floor at Lisa's like dinner table. So I'm I'm still on my friend's rotation.
SPEAKER_01I may have to cut tonight and and watch Frazier now.
SPEAKER_03But I kind of really want to watch Fraser now. I kind of really just want to like make a cup of tea, have some soup, and watch Frazier. I'm kind of under the weather today.
SPEAKER_01So well then let's finish this up and and then I still have to pick up my child from work.
SPEAKER_03But oh yeah, because when does your child get out of work?
SPEAKER_0111.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. Yeah, no, we'll be done.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I have time, but so I can't get in bed yet, but anyway. Um meatloaf with Lisa. So I'm sorry I cut you off. Nate, Lisa, and Claire, they're having like this little crunchy dinner at the living room like coffee table. And Lisa makes them vegan meatloaf, but it's like tofu, and Claire's like, so why do you call it meatloaf? And there's no meat in it. She's so cute sometimes.
SPEAKER_03But it like low key look good. Like it didn't look that bad.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I would taste it. I don't know if I would buy it like in a restaurant, but I would taste it if you ordered it.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, no, I was like, yo, let me go make some like vegan gravy. Like, I got that recipe down, like as long as there's no I just I would want to see nutted. I'm good. Yeah, no, it was it was probably like lentil and tofu, but anyway, I'm getting too into it. Nate compliments Lisa. Well, Claire is indecisive about ingesting the tofu mode. And Lisa tells Nate she's still working at the co-op. And when asking Nate about LA, he tells her he's been working at the funeral home. And she claims he knew she knew that he would do something spiritual. Claire laughs at the obvious flirting. And then Brenda comes up in the conversation where we find out that they've been sorry. No, it's okay. I was gonna say, this is like Lisa brings up like, oh, um, and are you still dating that girl like that you told me about? I guess they like had talked right after like his dad died, and um Nate says that they've been dating for the last eight months, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But when she was like, Oh, so this is like the most serious relationship that you've had, and he's like, Meh, it is what it is. So, yeah, that's already like another red flag. Um, Lisa says that she was like, she's happy for Nate, and she tells him that she was offered a job in LA as a vegan private chef for like a movie um production, and Clara's like, ooh, what movie? And she was like, I don't know, I don't watch movies because film is made with uh gelatin that comes from animals. I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_03Gelatin comes from horseshoes, yeah. That's why gelatin, gelatin isn't vegan.
SPEAKER_01No, no, but I didn't know that film had it. Yeah, like I thought it was a I thought gelatin was actually a pork product, but I didn't know that film had it.
SPEAKER_03So that wasn't necessarily come from horses, but it comes from like bones, and um I guess like hooves are kind of like bones, they're similar in structure, I guess, but a lot of things that you wouldn't think include gelatin, do. And film is one of them. It's just so strange to think about like how animal products are used in the world. Claire's had enough of this.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh, sorry, sorry, sorry.
SPEAKER_01No, no, I was gonna say she um, but she says that she doesn't know if like she's gonna take the job because she says that LA is such a godless place and that her life in Seattle is really full.
SPEAKER_03Speaking of really full, Claire excuses herself to the bathroom and having a instead of having a full belly of like tofu loaf, she just has a full napkin of tofu loaf, which she then flushes down the toilet.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Next, Brenda meets a prostitute. So her next her appointment is there, and she's you know, she's giving her massage and she's like, Oh, you're really loose. And the lady tells her, uh so she's like, Oh, do you mind if I ask you what you do? And she's like, Oh, I'm a prostitute. And Brenda kind of perks up at that, which is a little like I don't know. It was just funny to see her, like all of a sudden, her whole like, oh, woe is me demeanor has changed to, oh, now I'm interested. Um so she she like invites the lady to stay for like some tea or whatever, but the lady is like, um, no thanks, I gotta go. Got I gotta I gotta go to work. Um, but then Brenda gets a call from her mom who's like, it's an emergency, you have to come meet me at the spa.
SPEAKER_03Tranquility spa. She says it like five fucking times.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, tranquility spa, sorry.
SPEAKER_03She's like, it's an emergency, and Brenda's like, why? And her mom's like, I'm at Tranquility Spa in La Cañada, and it's an emergency.
SPEAKER_01Brenda's like, okay, it's a spa emergency.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and so Brenda goes to Tranquility Spa, and we know it's Tranquility Spa because it says sounding oning up the place, and as Brenda's walking in the door, her mom jumps out of a bush and grabs her, preventing her from entering tranquility.
SPEAKER_01I feel like this is like where Billy gets it from. Because I feel like we've seen Billy do like the exact same thing.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, yes.
SPEAKER_01With that bum rush shit.
SPEAKER_03Um and you want to talk about Brenda's mom? Because I just want to listen to this. And I want to get mom listening.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so Brenda's mom. I I can't remember her name, I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_03I can't either, that's why I just call her Brenda's mom.
SPEAKER_01Brenda's mom points out the dad's car, and that it has a pack of Virginia slims and a scrunchie in it, which means that he's clearly fucking somebody. And you're like at that point, you're like, oh my god. Oh my god. But then later you find out, like, oh no, no, no. It's okay. It's it's only wrong for the for a reason that you didn't think about. Um, do you want to do the rest of the scene now or no?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I know. I was gonna say, do you want to continue at stakeout featuring Brenda's mom?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So Brenda's just like, all right, whatever. But they go and they sit in the car, there's they're sitting in Brenda's mom's car, and they're waiting for the lady in question to walk out of Tranquility Spa. And so the the mom is like judging her husband for you know his taste in women or whatever, like having a moderately attractive woman woman to jump his saggy ass. And then Brenda is being kind of judgmental like about their relationship, and it doesn't really involve her, but the mom is just kind of like she he broke one of the rules. And so basically, she explains that they have an open marriage, but there's rules. And so, like, some of the rules are like you can't you can't fuck anyone in a hotel that costs more than this or less than this, you can't fuck anyone in Hawaii, you can't um none of the none of the friends, and not on holidays, not on holidays, and they have to and and he has to tell her she's like so that I have enough time. Yeah, and she's like, There's more, but I can't remember them. Um so the anyway, the mom is cracking jokes, but like you could tell she's just you know, she's still kind of upset. And Brenda tells her that even though she explains like that, there's rules that shouldn't or or wasn't one of the rules were not to fuck anyone in front of your kids because that there was like a hairy guy that Brenda caught her with in a hot tub, and Brenda's mom is like, Well, it was okay because you know your father was there and there was no and I assure you there was no penetration.
SPEAKER_03Like, and she goes, and you were supposed to be in bed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, oh yeah, you were supposed to be in bed. While they're sitting in the car waiting, Brenda also tells her mom about her client who's a prostitute, and her mom kind of puts her in her place, like, okay, so you met a prostitute, like big fucking deal. Then the lady comes out who's about Brenda's age, and the mom is like really taken aback. So she says she's gonna talk to her, you know, to humanize the encounter. She goes to the car, she's like, Miss, miss, and then all of a sudden, yeah, she's basically pulling the bitch out of the car by like her neck. Um, the woman breaks free and drives away. Brenda's mom returns to the car and she's very calm, and she's like, you know, I thought she would be more evolved. I lost my shit.
SPEAKER_02I know me too.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. It was the way that she was just like, she walked up to the car really calm, and then you hear the woman in the car saying, like, I'm late for a lunch with Byrne, which is like the father, the husband, the situation. Burn, yeah. That's when Brenda's mom loses her shit, and literally choking the woman, pulling her out of the car. She gets back in, she goes, You're gonna die in hell, and I'm gonna see you there. And then she casually walks back to the car, gets inside, brushes her head in, and she goes, you know, and she turns to Brenda, she goes, You know, I thought she would be more evolved. And Brenda goes, Evolved? And it was just hilarious. And the mom's like, Yeah, hungry, you want to go get some lunch now? She's so casual about it. And Brenda just like just starts fighting with her mom about everything. She's like, You didn't need me to be here, you just wanted an audience, blah blah blah. And they go back and forth and they start psyching each other out. And Brenda's mom says something about how you know Brenda now has to focus on herself because she doesn't have Billy to focus on, and she has to deal with a lot of shit because pretty much she was just trying to tell her daughter that, like, you're really fucked up. And Brenda got so angry she smacks her mother in the face. And while Brenda's mother was being harsh to her, she was right. Brenda's mother was right, and I don't believe she deserved to be smacked number one for many of reasons.
SPEAKER_01No, I I agree, but I think that she is touching on something, and and and that's probably what struck a nerve with Brenda is that she called it, you know.
SPEAKER_03Someone was calling her on her shit, and it just you know happened to be her mother. But her mother's right. Now Brenda has to face her own problems now that she can't distract herself on Elise. Yeah. So going back to where we were before we finished this takeout.
SPEAKER_01Father David with Taylor.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we get to see David play daddy. Not in a sexy way, in like an actual parent way. I know. That's how weird. It came out of my mouth, and I was like, oh no. Um, yeah, David picks up Taylor from school and is trying to like be like he's trying to be the perfect babysitter, honestly. He like a glass of milk. Yeah, you see, there's the coloring book. He has a tray of cookies out for her, but Taylor is taking all her anger out about everything out on David right now. She's like, I don't want your fucking milk. Like, she's like, I don't want like it, they basically just go back and forth. And Taylor asks for some goddamn chocolate milk. David said they only have white milk. Taylor says that the cookies David got her taste like shit, and then David tells her to draw on her coloring book. Then Taylor explains the coloring book and how you can color in it, you can't draw on it because there are already lines to color in. And so then in turn, David says, watch a TV. Like, why don't you watch some TV? Do you know how to remote the remote works? And then Taylor Taylor then just calls him a bitch, and it was like, Of course I know how to use a remote.
SPEAKER_01Like, she's she's 10, she knows how to reuse a remote. Like these kids were born knowing this shit.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, she I forgot how she calls him a bitch, but it was in a really funny way.
SPEAKER_01No, she didn't she call him like a dumb cracker bitch or some shit like that.
SPEAKER_03No, when he walked away, she goes, fucking dumb cracker, yeah, or something like that. But she was like, Bitch, I know how to work a remote. Yeah. Oh so funny. But so far, pretty much like Taylor and David are are having a rocky start. Uh they had like a good start in the beginning with the easy big oven when he went over for her birthday. Now they're kind of having a rocky bit, and we'll see where it goes from here. But we have an intermission. We gotta go get a burger.
SPEAKER_01In Seattle, Nate and Claire are attempting to go to Chubby's, but really they go into Chubby's Chub Chub Chubby's Chub. They're gonna go through the drive-thru. You know, it's like the generic, like the Seattle version of like McDonald's, or I don't know if it's a real place, but anyway. Claire says that she needs to eat something that walked the earth with the works. Nate admits to lying about liking the tofu loaf, and Claire calls him out on sleeping with Lisa. He says that they were fuck buddies with no strings attached, and Claire asks if Lisa knew. And he's like, Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, she knew. I don't, I don't think she knew, but anyway. Um Nate asks Claire what she wants, and then he's like, Do you smell rotten eggs? Claire's just like, what? No. And so then it's their turn to order. And I'm sorry, I know that this scene was not supposed to be funny, but like Claire, I couldn't help but laugh.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'll have uh double double uh double uh chubby, a double chubby, a chubby, chubby, a double, double, double, chubby, I'm chubby, chubby, I tummy, I don't have a double, I don't have a double, double, chubby, burger.
SPEAKER_01Um the camera angle was the only thing that made it a little disturbing. Because otherwise it would have just been pure funny. Claire also left, and then she realized that he's not being funny. Nay holds his head in pain, runs out of the van, and pukes. So now Claire's like pretty worried because she doesn't know about the AVM, she has no idea what's going on. Nay tells Claire to drive, and he needs to make a phone call. So he's he had his first AVM-related seizure, and he's calling like his doctor or whatever to get medicine. But she's trying, she's still trying to listen to what he's saying. And the speaker, the worker is like in the speaker, like, hello, can I take your order? And she's like, shut up. And then he's like, ma'am, and then he she's like, shut the fuck up. Actually, he calls her mister or sir, and she's like, I said, shut the fuck up.
SPEAKER_03And that really wasn't supposed to be funny on Claire's bird, but it's still fucking funny.
SPEAKER_01All I could think of though is that had that happened here, granted, as soon as you stepped out of your car, people would be honking at you like nobody's business. People would be yelling, like, what the fuck are you doing? Get back in your fucking car or move out of the fucking way. But after about a few minutes of not moving, some like honestly, here somebody would have gotten out and been like, no, he's not okay. Let's get like somebody's calling 911, somebody's helping. Like, this all right.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we're the good Samaritan.
SPEAKER_01Like, we give you shit first, but then we're like, oh no, we gotta take care of this. Even if it's only just to get him out of the way so that we can place our orders. We're gonna help. That's true. We're gonna help.
SPEAKER_03Um, but yeah, so then back at the fishers pretty much saw something's going on.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, yeah. Claire, Claire is like just now trying to figure it out. But we're back at the Fishers, and you wrote inflated deceased person or just fat.
SPEAKER_03I couldn't figure it out.
SPEAKER_01David and Rico are in the basement, and you've put doing what I assume is relaxing a dead person's muscles for showing. I I thought that it was like for moving the embalming fluid like through the body, but I guess it could be either.
SPEAKER_03Look, that's not my profession. If that's how it works, interest. I don't know, but I don't know. Either way, it looked like this person was like up like a skin balloon. Like they were they were huge, and then like their arms were like blown up and their hands were blown up, and like they looked like they had a lot of water retention. And like David is on one side of the deceased's arm, and Nate's on the other side of the deceased's arm, and they're like massaging like from the wrist down to like the elbows, and just like with their thumbs like going down, massaging. And I was like, Are they did they like inflate this person to like maybe relax their muscles? Like maybe they died in a way that like their body like stiffened, and like they're doing this to relax the muscles to put somebody in the coffin. It wasn't Mr. Moss back, this guy had hair. At first, I thought it was Mr. Moss back, and they like at first in my notes, I was like, Oh, yeah, they were like correcting what the other funeral home did when they were embalming. And I'm like, wait, no, no, no, I didn't go back from the Seattle. Yeah, it's not him. All right, so I just go I couldn't figure out if this person was fat or deceased.
SPEAKER_01I just googled why do morticians massage the body, and it says the embalming process step by step. Limbs are massaged to relieve the stiffening of the joints and muscles, and any necessary shaving would also take place at this time.
SPEAKER_03Oh, so they were just dead, they were just fat.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I think it's just to relieve the stiffening. So I think it was just kind of simple.
SPEAKER_03I'm sorry for fat shaming him. I was just literally curious.
SPEAKER_01Well, you weren't making a judgment. I mean like being like the color pink is just the color pink until you say it's ugly. Right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but I guess I could say like, oh, that horrible pink color.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's what I'm saying. Then that's horrible as a judgment.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I could have just said like overweight or slightly larger. Is that just fat?
SPEAKER_01So now that we know why they were massaging the dead guy, um Rico is again pissy, and he's like that he had to stay late because he went to go pick up Taylor, and then he's like, This is um about me not wanting to be taken advantage of by my employers. And David is like, Oh, but we're more than just your employers, right? We're family. Rico addresses the pink elephant in the basement of the funeral home, and he's like, Well, when it's convenient, we're like family, but in a pinch, I'm just an employee, and you and Nate are my bosses. But my note is that that shit goes both ways, right? Because you're just an employee until you want to have your fucking baby's party at their home and then their family, so or you're just an employee until you need a down payment for your house, right? So, yeah, Rico, I guess it does go both ways. Nate doesn't get a chance to react because the next thing we know is that Taylor is David doesn't get a chance to react. Oh, sorry. Sorry, Stella just broke into my bedroom.
SPEAKER_03That's okay. We we don't get to see David's reaction to Rico's comment, which is really unfortunate because Rico then says, like, hey little lady, and we turn around and like or David turns around and we see Taylor just staring at the body, and she's like, Um, is he dead? And so David escorts Taylor to the stairs right outside of the mortuary room. And she obviously she's in fourth grade. We later learned she's in fourth grade. We were there for her birthday, she's like nine, ten years old. She is, and she has a lot of questions. And David, who is he just showed up in the last scene with Taylor. Oh no, I'm sorry, I don't know what I'm saying. David's like answering Taylor's questions, and David, who just showed us in the last scene with Taylor, but how to talk to kids is actually oh no, no, just because she was like, Is he dead?
SPEAKER_01I don't want to die, like you know, so she's she's also personalizing the experience, not just an abstract fear, it's internalizing. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03No, but she just generally has questions, obviously. And like thankfully, she's not just emotionally reacting, like she's just more questionative about what's going on. Like, that's scary for all parties. And even though in the last scene with Taylor, David seemed like he didn't really know what he was doing, he really was talking to her in a really progressive way. Um, and I wrote a note that this is how I try to talk to like my students about like difficult situations. I've talked about like last year with my third graders, we talked about racism. Unfortunately, we talked a little bit about sexism because they brought it up. Not that my students bring things up and I have to talk about it, but I rather address things in like an educational way and tell them like the truth in like an age appropriate manner compared to them learning about shit on the internet and thinking that like the internet's right because it's the internet. So that's what David was doing here. He was being truthful, he was being honest, he was being kind, and he was being respectful of her emotional state and developmental maturity. He wasn't saying. Too much that she wouldn't be able to understand because she's literally 10. And she he wasn't being like mean or or scary at all. He he was really being like a parent to her and explaining something like a parent.
SPEAKER_01Pretty straightforward, but like age appropriately. Which I don't know.
SPEAKER_03That's what I mean.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, which was which was just really nice.
SPEAKER_03And I think that it was almost heartwarming for David in that situation.
SPEAKER_01And I think that a lot of kids respond well to that kind of thing.
SPEAKER_03And that's the thing they do. And I've realized that like a lot of adults that I've seen, not necessarily people that I work with, but like a lot of adults that I've seen around children or teaching children, the many schools I've worked at over the years, don't know this, or they just don't believe it. And they feel like everything needs to be sugarcoated and put into like dumbed down language. And honestly, the kids around that age range, from like third grade to sixth grade, just want you to fucking talk to them. Yeah, it's like that episode of Friends.
SPEAKER_01When Phoebe sings to the kids in the library, and all the kids are like, That's the lady that tells the truth. Yeah, I mean, as like it in today's age, with the fact that the cow in the meadow goes move, the cow in the meadow goes move, and I can't remember the next line, but she's like, something with the farmer, and that's how we get hamburger.
SPEAKER_04The kids are like I I fucking love TV.
SPEAKER_03So I'm sorry. Um she's an icon, she's worth talking about. Yeah, no, it really is a side class. Um yeah, I just it's just something that I wish a lot of people would understand. And it's just funny because there's actually a conversation later on that far from, yeah, yeah, that I, you know, kind of brings us back to like this more progressive way of talking to children. But anyway, Nate tells Claire about the ABM, and obviously so, she just watched him have like a mild seizure, and yeah, but we find out that was actually a mild seizure in like the conversation that Nate's having with Claire. And we see them walking out of like a drugstore, like he has medication, and Nate says that the medication should prevent those mild seizures from happening, right?
SPEAKER_01And he'll just have to be on them for the rest of his life. Yeah, okay, Nate, you know what? If you take them or you don't, the end of your life will be a lot sooner if you don't. I don't know what to tell you. Like, yeah, I mean, I don't know, Nate. But Claire's a little freaked out, and he's like, you know, he's he's just trying to reassure her anyway. He's like, you know, as long as I take this, it'll be fine. He's like, but David knows, but don't tell mom. Like so, we're continuing with the secrets.
SPEAKER_03Um, yeah, and honestly, we can go right back to Tyler and David.
SPEAKER_01Okay, yeah. So back again to dinner at the Fishers, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Dinner at the Fishers, but this time featuring Taylor and obviously meeting Claire aren't there. Yes. So that means that it's Ruth, David, and Taylor. And so the three of them are sitting at the table. Everybody can't be more of an opposite from each other. And traditional family values at this point are completely obsolete in Taylor's home. And she can't understand why they're not eating dinner from the TV and they're like actually sitting at the table. And then Ruth explains that like they don't do that. And David's really cute, and he's like, you know, we could watch TV after dinner, but let's sit here and eat dinner, right? We learned through Ruth.
SPEAKER_01But she, I will give her credit though, because when Ruth was like, Oh, we don't do that, like we eat here, and she was just like, Okay, no, like, no argument, no cursing, no nothing. She she obviously didn't like the idea, or she wasn't using the idea, but she was like, Alright, cool, like, this is what we're doing. Kids are so fucking cool sometimes, you know. Like, we don't really give them a lot of the credit that like we should.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I was actually tiny, tiny, tiny little side note. Um, I was reading some article, I was watching some video about not giving young, young kids, like two, three, four, even like infants, like enough credit for what they literally go through every single fucking second of their day.
SPEAKER_01So much new, so much different, so much lack of control.
SPEAKER_03And they need to do this, and they need to be here, they need to be held, and they need to be on the ground, they need to be in a stroll, and like they're they don't understand why.
SPEAKER_01Like, we throw a fucking temper tantrum when they change the formula of like our toothpaste, and we're just like, oh my god, how will I live?
SPEAKER_03Call the owner, call the media, call my god, it was me today over fucking rayos yard sauce because Campbell brought them out, and I was literally, I had like a panic attack in my head. I'm like, nah, I gotta go to Costco and I gotta get all the rayos sauce because they're gonna change the formula, it's not gonna taste good. This puts foil on my plan of not making homemade sauce anymore.
SPEAKER_01And I'm like and the kids are like, cool spaghetti. Like, yeah, okay, you know, like it it really is understandable when they throw tantrums because we freak out over the dumbest shit sometimes, and we can't even throw tantrums.
SPEAKER_03So well, not to go back on what you're saying right now, Lisa, but Taylor is still kind of upset. She may have been okay with the TV thing, but then she just starts fucking revealing shit at the dinner table about David and Keith. And David says something. I'm sorry. Can I play Devil's advocate though? Yes.
SPEAKER_01Um, it sounds to me like you're saying that this is kind of like malicious or like malicious adjacent what she's saying. Oh no, it's not. It's not at all. Okay, because I was like, I didn't take it like that. I I just thought it was like this is this is like the normal thing that she hears around her. And so as far as she knows, that's acceptable conversation. And the fact that she she also doesn't like or or maybe she just doesn't realize how bad it is.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, she knows that she knows worser words. Those are her words that she said in the beginning of this episode to Keith when he when she said shit and he was like, he was like, so do I. I know worse words than that, and he was like, so do I, yeah. But she knows that she's not supposed to be saying shit like uh punk-ass fudge packer. Yeah, she may not know exactly what the fudge packer part means, but she's a bad word.
SPEAKER_01Bad, like it really is so bad. I re I mean I remember similar time frame maybe maybe the same year, right? Give or take one when I was working in and I worked in the West Village, I worked in Greenwich Village. Okay, and I remember like there were still some times where like people would use that specific slur, and I'm like who the fuck are you? Do you not know where you're at?
SPEAKER_03I know it's like it it insinuates like ass. It insinuates things in like uh like ass kind of a negative demeanor. No, no, I know that it's insinuating in the negative demeanor. Well, yeah. I didn't know like the phrase fudge packer was like a slur. I mean it's it's not about like loosely saying, No, no, no, no. It I don't I never understood it to be a slur, like like if you can't say like the full word, you just say the first word, like an N-word or an S word, like Yeah, I never understood it to be like that.
SPEAKER_01I I understood it to be like you know what, like a carpet muncher, similar to that.
SPEAKER_03Like Yeah, you know what? I feel like they do fall into the same category. Those two, like um like almost slurs, but yeah, no, I know what you're saying though.
SPEAKER_01If you said it, it wouldn't be like you know, interesting. But you would see like if somebody said that in my presence, I would be very taken aback. First of all, that I'm hanging out with somebody who would say that, but like it would be like like maybe we should go somewhere else. Like I I wouldn't feel comfortable, but then again, maybe because I'm not a gay man, maybe it actually is more offensive, and I just can't recognize that. But I don't know. I I always took it to be similar to like carpet muncher, which is like it's a it's an insult.
SPEAKER_03That's you see, I would think of it more as like I'm not trying to correct you for calling it a slur, but like I didn't realize the severity of it, but maybe it's more of like a harsh insult compared to a slur. Right, right. Yeah, I just like I felt bad just like loosely saying it out loud if like it could be taken to the extent of a slur, and I'm just like not aware of it because I never ever heard this phrase before before the show. I've like I've just haven't been in situations to hear it truly honestly. It's not one of those words that like or one of those phrases like oh you should know it by now.
SPEAKER_01Like I just I don't I don't necessarily think you need to take it out because like you're quoting a line. Um, and and our podcast is like not made for kids, but if you want me to, I will.
SPEAKER_03No, it's fine. It's fine. It's the point of me recognizing that like it's not like I like this was a learning experience for me. That's it. Like this is growth. This is truly honestly how like people learn and grow things, and they're not just indifferent to everything, or they're not just ignoring, and this is how society should be, honestly. But anyway, anyway, um, so when Taylor does say that out loud, which are Carly's words and not Taylor's, um, it sparks an educational conversation on to what to label somebody who's not straight. And Ruth says something to Taylor, like, we don't say those things to about those people, and Taylor's like, well, what do we call those people? And Ruth is really struggling to like pretty much say the word like homosexual, but it leaves like this weird silence, and then David fills it by correcting Taylor and telling her, like, the correct verbiage is homosexual. And Taylor, a curious child deep down, is truly satisfied with the answer. She just thought she's actually like she learned.
SPEAKER_01So I have an observation. When Ruth was struggling, well, first of all, when Taylor said it, I'm I'm sorry, I don't know if I blinked and I somehow didn't hear you, but she said when we don't use those words, and she said because they're hateful.
SPEAKER_03I didn't I didn't say that correct. Okay.
SPEAKER_01I forgot about that. So no, that's fine. Um, I just wasn't sure like if if I just like somehow tuned you out. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03No, yeah, Ruth does address that like that and I that insult is hateful.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so that's what I just wanted to like kind of correct myself because I said slur, and I'm not sure if it would be counted as a slur or like a really bad insult. And so now just thinking about what Ruth said about how it's hateful. I mean, obviously slurs are hateful, but I don't know. So um, you know, this obviously is not meant to in offend anybody in any way.
SPEAKER_03Like we just have a conversation about yeah, but like it's it's all within the context of how we're using it, and it's not like we're just saying a word to say it out loud. Like we're having a conversation about how the word was used and we're discussing like its meaning and its appropriateness. And but I am it was a scene in a show.
SPEAKER_01Like I okay, so full disclosure, aside from this episode, I haven't heard that term in about 20 years. Um, and and I've heard it like in real life. Um so I I know that it like it's bad. What I don't know is and and this is just like for curiosity for curiosity, like educational purposes, like for myself and for Britney, so that like we know for the future. If you know, would you know if it's considered to be more of a slur, um like F-word, N-word, like that? Or if it's like just like a really vicious insult. Um because we really like don't know, and obviously it's not a word that is in our vernacular, but um, I don't know. I would I feel like I would like to know. I wouldn't want like somebody to ever be offended or whatever. So yeah, but yeah. Um but sorry, so Ruth says that they're hateful, and I just want to like point that out, like it it really, really is. But when she when Taylor asked her like what word do you use when she was stuck, I also wondered if it was because she was afraid to say the wrong thing. Not because she didn't have words, but because she was afraid of maybe insulting him or or showing her ignorance or something.
SPEAKER_03I think it was more of like I don't know. I took it more as like Ruth was trying to figure out how she could say that like there is no name for them because God doesn't see those types of people, but then she also knew that like she was in front of her son who is gay and she's trying to accept it. So Ruth's having like that internal struggle between like accepting like her son because that's part of her, and she loves him with everything in her, but then also like her relationship with her religion, and so I Yeah, that's the but and then on top of that, it's like how to tell sorry, I was playing with my AirPod case. Um and then I flung it, but um, and I flung it and it hit the wall and it fell behind my bed. Yay! But um so anyway, like the struggle between religion, the struggle between like saying the right thing in front of David, and the struggle of talking to a child and trying to figure out the correct verbiage to use, or child like the correct child-friendly language. It was a lot that she was thinking of, and it honestly just left this awkward like emptiness in the world.
SPEAKER_01Now I was just thinking is that I wonder if sh or if like if the reason or part of the reason has something to do with the fact that Taylor is a child, and maybe homosexual is a dirty word in her in her brain. I wonder if anything she could have said, like homosexual, gay, if if it all just was like a dirty word that she felt like she shouldn't be saying in front of kids, because you know, like some people think like that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I remember there was a word in the beginning of the show that Ruth couldn't say. Was it sex? Could she not talk about sex in the beginning? Could she not give an exturbate? There was something like that.
SPEAKER_01Well, there was there was the episode where she kept wanting to ask David if he was gay, but she couldn't say gay. Yeah, that's what I mean. She was like, Yeah, she struggled. But it wasn't the first episode, it was it was like a few episodes in, but she was just like, um, are you but then like she wouldn't finish.
SPEAKER_03That's what I mean. So I I don't know if it's like just yeah, maybe she just can't say it. Ruth is a whole fucking package, but so is Taylor, honestly. Getting back to like what Taylor was saying, David like educates her in like a really like respectful way, really progressive way. I wouldn't think twice to tell like a fourth grader or fifth grader the word homosexual. I don't think there's any problem with it. That's me personally, but Taylor's like, okay, I understand. She's the one who brought it up. She was saying shit that they corrected her.
SPEAKER_01If the alternative is the first thing that she called them, then yes, that's true. We should absolutely know about the word homosexual.
SPEAKER_03Like honest to God, like your daughter, your youngest is literally Taylor's age.
SPEAKER_02The same, yeah, same age.
SPEAKER_03So if like Amaya came up to you and was like, Oh, I heard some kids in school talking about flashbackers, like, what are those? And you were like, wouldn't you like sit down and explain to her? Like, that's a really good, and what fucking kid is this?
SPEAKER_01Because I'm calling the school and I'm talking to their parent.
SPEAKER_03Well, yes, but like forget about that part, but like more of just like the educating her on like what like how the words are wrong and hateful. And if you did want to talk about somebody who likes somebody that is similar to them, like I don't know if you've talked to Maya about this, but I'm sure she's heard it in school. But that's a whole nother fucking ball game on what we're about to talk about in school, yeah. Anyway, Taylor also doesn't like Eddie, yeah, because he apparently talks to her like she's stupid and stares at himself too much in the mirror, and Ruth responds with it's true, some people don't know how to talk to children and stares right at David when she says it. And the moment it seems like Ruth is directing this comment at herself, but is she directing it towards David?
SPEAKER_01But did you take it to mean that Ruth doesn't know how to talk to children, i.e., David, or Ruth doesn't know how to talk to children, i.e. Taylor, or Claire, or any of them, or was it like that David doesn't know how to talk to children? Meaning And that's what I meant.
SPEAKER_03Is she saying that, but like saying it in a way that she subliminally is like describing herself that she doesn't know how to talk to children, or is she literally saying it out loud, but then also subliminally like directing the comment towards or like passively saying it towards David. That's what I mean. So it was kind of like we know that comment wasn't just directed towards Eddie. She just said don't start frantically cleaning again. Yeah, no, she literally took a bite, had this conversation, was like, I can't do this, and she gets up and she just frantically cleans the suppressed emotions, like she's been doing. We're back in Seattle now. I'm listening, and we see Lisa yelling at ants while Nick's Nate's making a phone call. Uh Claire's sitting on the couch reading a book, and she hears, go away, go away, and it's Lisa on the floor yelling at a trail of ants. And because she's vegan, she can't kill them. So I guess the alternative is to yell at them. She says she's tried a bunch of different holistic methods to get rid of the ants, and now she's resorted to yelling at them.
SPEAKER_01Lisa should have tried this summer.
SPEAKER_04Right. Yell at them.
SPEAKER_03And so Claire's just like, no, I wasn't sleeping. I was reading a book. Because Lisa's like, I thought you were sleeping. Then out of nowhere, Lisa's like, I don't love Nate anymore. And Claire's like, um, okay. And and then Lisa's like, but do you think he'll ever fall in love with me? And Claire's like, I think you're asking the wrong person. Yeah, like and then how fucking awkward. It was so weird. Lisa's such a she's so weird. Um we see Nate on Lisa's front. Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_01Um we see. Side note, I text I text Alex, uh Alex, Agnes something, and I just asked her questions, and I I can't tell you exactly what the questions are on air, but it had to it had to do with like I needed address and whereabouts. And she was like, Why do I always find myself texting you what the actual fuck, Lisa? I was like, because you know me. Like, don't worry, you'll you'll know when you need to know. Just hand me my information, what I need, and then like let's go.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. It's the Sagittarius in here that's all about the weird questions.
SPEAKER_01Lisa Sagittarius, you know, more serial killers are born in November than any other month, so oh my god. Just in case.
SPEAKER_03They're just overthinkers with a lot of questions.
SPEAKER_01You know, I get it. The older I get, the more I get it.
SPEAKER_03Um Lisa's front porch, not on Lisa, but let's get under Lisa. And he's talking to Brenda on I don't have a front porch. No, you have a stoop, and that's okay.
SPEAKER_04I have a stoop.
SPEAKER_03It's a cute stoop. Anyway, anyway, we see Nate on Lisa's front porch calling Brenda, who tells him that her mother pretty much beat the shit out of a woman in the parking lot, and they're just that like having a normal conversation.
SPEAKER_01And Nate talks at the field, but sorry, Nate's like, oh my god, what happened? And Brenda's like, I don't really want to talk about it.
SPEAKER_03Like, what the f- Yeah, she was like, you know, it's just a fucking toother, like, whatever.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she's like, Oh, I don't want my back to get cold, I gotta go.
SPEAKER_03Like, Brenda, yeah. And Nate says, like, he misses her. He's like, I miss you, Brenda. And she was like struggling to say it back. She did, but she struggled to say it back. Yeah, and when she hangs up the phone, she weeps and sighs. And that's what the closed captions tell me.
SPEAKER_01I was like, I didn't catch that, but okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I leave the closed captions on, so that's why when I pause it, I can get like the Direct quotes like when I'm typing up the show notes, and in parentheses it says weeps, comma, sighs. And I was like, okay, I guess that's a great way to describe what she's doing. Um, it seems a little bit weird for her to cry after getting off the phone and to struggle to express her affection to her boyfriend, but we soon find out why she's been so distant.
SPEAKER_01How bathtubs? Yeah, Brenda's bathtub hallucinations. I feel like you should have found another B word. But Brenda's bat shit bathtub house.
SPEAKER_02No, like Brenda's bat shit. Oh, for hallucinations.
SPEAKER_01Hallucinations. Like a word, but I just wanted you to get the gist. Um Brenda has this is her bath that she had to get off the phone with, and honestly, I'm really like not that mad at her. So she's got a bath, a joint, and some candles. So it's a vibe. Then the doorbell rings. Oh, lo and behold, it's Jake from Melrose Place. And he's like hello, and she's like, How'd you get my address? And he's like, Don't worry about it, as he disrobes her and kisses her. And like, like, I know it's not funny, but you're like that. It seems kind of rapey.
SPEAKER_02And then in parentheses, I said we don't have to say this because I don't want to like trigger anybody listening to say that word.
SPEAKER_01But like when but I thought about that and I was like, well, yeah, but it's not because he's cute. And I'm like, holy shit, like I've been conditioned. Because if some ugly ass man came to my door, even if I had met him once and told him that I was like a deaf sign language teacher, and my name was whatever the Madam Butterfly, whatever the fuck she said it was. Like, you know what I mean? That doesn't necessarily like, yeah, okay, maybe she is interested in him, but that doesn't mean that I want you to come to my house, put your hands on me, not tell me how you found my house. But like, she's like, but how'd you find my address?
SPEAKER_03And he's like, we don't have to worry about that. And then he just starts like undressing her, not that she was wearing much to begin with, and like running his hands to her back and kissing down her body, and it seemed very rapey, but like that's what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_01Like it would be so bad. But like if Jason Momoa came to my door, I can't say I'd be like, 911. I'd be like, Do you want a beer like first? Or do you want what do you want what kind of sandwich would I want later?
SPEAKER_04Like a reading the cold card.
SPEAKER_01I'm not like I'm not I'm not making excuses, but I'm I'm kind of like laughing at the sad reality and like the realization like how fucked up it is that like we have been conditioned to only see problematic red flags when the person is ugly or or what society deems ugly. Because if he's cute, it's a fantasy. That is a problem. That really is a problem.
SPEAKER_03It truly is a fucking problem. Which we could talk about at different times, yeah. Um as his hands run down her body, her bathrobe falls from behind, and Brenda moans in pleasure. So we know this isn't supposed to be a rapey vibe. We know this is supposed to be a fantasy, like you were saying. And side note, does this man have giant hands or is Brenda really petite? I thought she was like tall. I'm not saying you can't be tall and petite, but like Yeah, I don't know. I didn't really notice until like like the width of his hand, like this, like open hand, was like almost the whole size of her back.
SPEAKER_01Damn, yeah, I didn't notice.
SPEAKER_03I have to go back and watch. It's like like he could have probably touched like like one oblique to the other oblique with his summoning his hand is fucking huge, or she's small. It was weird, and I I don't get the impression that she's small, but anyway. Um and like at first you're like, oh my god, this can't be real life, and it isn't. It's a fantasy Brenda's having while playing with her shower head in the tub. Mm-hmm. Anyway, well, Brenda has her joint in one hand, the shower head in the other, and she's just laying back with her eyes closed, just vibing. Um, but in a kind of like scummy way. Um we move on to the next scene.
SPEAKER_02No, I mean, yes, cummy, but also scummy. That's always like, oh okay, that's new. Sorry.
SPEAKER_04Um I mean maybe, but we didn't we don't know if it was a fully cummy way, but I just thought it was scummy towards Nate. But okay. Yeah. Oh my god. Um yeah.
SPEAKER_03That was so horrible. I know how to spell words, but when I'm typing fast and not really looking at my keyboard, I make all these weird typing errors.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, it's fine.
SPEAKER_03I'm noticing them as I'm reading. Um we could understand it, it's fine. Thanks. Um, in the next scene, I said in the next room, in the next scene, we see that Taylor was sleeping in the sunroom. And we see Keith come to pick up Taylor and we actually find out a tiny little bit later that it was about like 1:30 in the morning when he came to pick her up. And he like really expresses to David how thankful he is and how much he appreciates David. And Keith picks up Taylor to leave and almost even forgets her backpack. And David like gives the backpack. He's like, Don't forget this.
SPEAKER_02He's like, It was I could never really tell you. Yeah, it was sweet, it was sweet.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um, around this time of the show, there were like a couple of choppy scenes, like this last one we just spoke about with Taylor and Keith and David was a little bit choppy, the next one's a little choppy, the one after this is a little choppy, and we're we're just going like back and forth. Um so Nate is laying in bed in Seattle in Lisa's house, and this is like their the one night where they sleep over, and Nate's just laying down on the bed, just taking everything in. And Lisa comes in to give him another blanket, and through conversation, Lisa informs the audience that she really knows Nate, and that besides their fling, they really don't like they really didn't know each other well, they were like really good friends. And although Nate deflects what's truly going on because Lisa's like, What's wrong? He's like, Nothing, he eventually breaks down crying to Lisa, and as an audience, we assume he told her about his episode earlier in the drive-thru. We just see him crying, and I didn't catch that. Like, I didn't think that he told her. I guess maybe I just I'm assuming that like as like he was crying and after like the scene ended, like that night he told her what happened. Yeah, it makes sense.
SPEAKER_01Like, I guess I never really looked deeper into it, you know. Just but you're probably right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and Lisa consoles him, and then the next day we see Claire telling Lisa, like, no, thank you, I don't need the breakfast. I'm good, I don't need breakfast. And Nate's trying to pack up some of his belongings, and he asks Lisa where like one of his flannels went. She goes, Oh, we must have sold it like the co-op sale or something. And then he's like, Oh, I found it, and she goes, Oh, it's my favorite. And he's like, Do you want to keep it? And she's like, Thank you. And before he leaves, he kisses her on the head, and Lisa even gives Claire a big hug, and then she watches them leave. We said something in the beginning of the episode about her staring them, like staring at them in her face when she watched them leave, and the way that like she stared at the door when they left when the door closed. I don't know if like you felt anything from that.
SPEAKER_02I didn't, but I feel like now I should have.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_03Moving into the next scene. Mrs. judgmental. Guess who we're talking about?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I I I already well, if it wasn't Brenda, it had to be Ruth.
SPEAKER_03Mm-hmm. And she begins to interrogate David about Keith's whereabouts and when he ended up picking up Taylor, and that's when David says, like, half past one. And Ruth then says in a roundabout way that by David taking, I'm sorry, but by David talking and defining homosexuality to Taylor, that it may make her gay. She literally, in a roundabout way, says, like, the fact that you were talking about gay people at the table may make her gay. She literally was saying that, like, it's gonna put ideas in her head. She literally said like the words it's gonna put ideas in her head.
SPEAKER_01I didn't catch that. I mean, I don't think that's how it works, Ruth, but okay. Ruth is just roof. So you wrote David's response.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, give me one second. Hold on. I found something that we'll talk about at the end of the episode, but I like accidentally stumbled upon the transcript to this whole episode.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_03Okay, what time did your friend come to pick up his niece? Half past one. That's awfully late for a child. Hurry to be up. She was asleep in the sun porch. Oh, is there something you'd like to say to me, mom? No, yes, there is. I'm all ears. Your father used to say that to me all the time. I'm all ears. Sometimes you remind me of him what's on your mind. You have to be careful with children, David, because their blueprints are still being drafted by the adults in their lives. And this little girl, well, it seems to me that her foundation is probably unstable enough without you bringing your my what? Well, your relationship with her uncle, you have to admit, might be a little confusing to someone her age.
SPEAKER_01So I took that to just mean that Keith is supposed to be with Eddie, but he's hanging around David.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you see, I interpreted that as bringing up the word homosexual in front of a child, and Ruth not even being okay with the word to say that saying that we're maybe imposing the view of life that Tyler's still creating. Okay. Because that's what the good part means to me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, I feel like it could go both ways.
SPEAKER_03You're right, it could go both ways. But David kind of ends this conversation with literally telling her, like, just between you and me, you're starting to sound like a crazy person. And I think it's time you keep that shit to yourself and minded your own fucking business.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that was David. Literally tells Ruth that that was kind of shocking to hear.
SPEAKER_03Seems like David isn't being close off Ruth's list.
SPEAKER_02Did you mean to write flated? No, I left that from last time.
SPEAKER_03That's why I was correcting it. Um Nate and Claire are picking up Mr. Moss back at the funeral home in Seattle. But it seems like Claire is doing the drive back. Claire then states that she's reassured that Nate is just as fucked up as the rest of them, and Nate says he isn't. And Claire's like, no, you are. And he's like, No, I'm not nearly as fucked up as the rest of you. Maybe indicating. Yeah. But I don't know if that's indicating that he believes that he's above everybody else or that he's more fucked up than everybody else.
SPEAKER_01I think that that's an interesting take, but I just assumed that he meant like, no, he's not as fucked up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, maybe. And actually, something to mention about them the music in this episode, because um, the song Drive by Joe 90 starts playing, and the the lyrics of the song, it actually starts right from the beginning of the song, and the song starts off saying, bigger, more powerful, and yet nobody knows. That's the first line to the song, and in the chorus of the song, the chorus of the song is time doesn't know, but it's time for us all to know. And that repeats a couple of times. And so, first off, the song isn't credited at all in the show. There's actually, I think the the group is called Yola Tango. They're they're actually really good. I've heard their songs before. Yola Tango actually has a song that's in this show, also, not Autumn Sweater. Maybe it is Autumn Sweater, that's like their most popular song, but like it's not credited either, which I thought was wild. And they don't credit any music in this episode. I watched like the credits and I waited all the way to the end, and I couldn't understand why. And so it took me a while to actually find what this song was called because it's not credited anywhere. And when I looked up um Joe 90 on Spotify, like they barely have any listens, like whatever. But using the song, using the line bigger, more powerful, and yet nobody knows. Maybe that suggests that there are things ever present looming and yet unspoken. Things bigger than what we already know.
SPEAKER_01Because think about it, Ruth doesn't know about the AVM, Brenda doesn't know about his ABM, Ruth doesn't know about all the shit going on with Gabe. Nate doesn't know about Brenda's like he kind of knows about like her school stuff, but like I feel like she's not letting him in, so like he's not really knowing about her life. I mean, I don't know, like if I'm missing anybody, but that can that's definitely a a running theme. I mean, should now everybody know in the show. Yeah, and I mean like now everybody knows that David is gay, but before that was a big underlying secret, you know, how no nobody knew about him. Maybe every season somebody else will reveal a secret.
SPEAKER_03Honestly, I don't think we have to wait like for a whole nother season because oh, no more, no more, no more. No, well, I think about the next episode. One more thing I do want to mention.
SPEAKER_05It's not about it's not about the next episode. Okay, okay, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_03Okay. When I was trying to find that song, I ended up stumbling upon this um blog. And it's called Rico the Number Six F U. And the blog focuses on Rico's character and how he's underrepresented. And parts of the blog even go into um trying to like track down the actual homes that are used in the show and how they contribute to the plot about where specifically they're located in LA and what that neighborhood, like in actuality, like in like our world, like what it says about the character. And I thought it was really interesting, like the the digging that this person did in this blog, and I think the article that mentioned this song, which is how I found the song credit, um, I think they're actually they were posting it in like 2009-2010. And it's just they have a really like a lot of really good content on their blog, and so I just wanted to shout that out. If you guys are like interested about like the little things in the show that we don't really get to talk about because we kind of just talk about the main events and our opinions of it, but you're curious about like other little Easter eggs and things like that in the series, and you don't mind spoilers because I saw some things that I probably shouldn't have seen if I was a first time viewer.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm not gonna um I'm not gonna read it.
SPEAKER_03No, but if our viewers do want to, um it's called Rico6fu.wordpress.com. Rico sixfeetunder.com. And once we get a little bit deeper into the show and Rico's character develops more and things come out more, I'll remind you of this blog and we'll look into it together later.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_03Um so what quote got you Six Feet Under?
SPEAKER_01We had the same quote this week, and that quote was you know, I thought she would have been I thought she would be more involved. And what's fucked up is that like neither one of us can remember her name, so it's like dash Brenda's mother.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's between that and David going, but I really think you should like shut the fuck up and mind your own business. Yeah, there was I think it's time you kept that shit to yourself and minded your own fucking business. That that was a line.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there were there were lines in the beginning when they were having um the first like when the whole Fisher family was sitting in the eating together, where and then David's like, Does anybody know what the fuck she's talking about? Like uh it's like all those lines were really good, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Or the funeral fun time fact, like they brought Abraham Lincoln home to Illinois by train all the way from Washington back to nice.
SPEAKER_01That's true. I didn't even think of that one, but that was a good one.
SPEAKER_03That was a fun time.
SPEAKER_01Um so your gravedigger of the week was Ruth.
SPEAKER_03Obviously, obviously, she she's trying to create her plan. She's trying to map her blueprint, but in actuality, I feel like she's just drawing her blueprint with the opposite side of the pencil. Like she thinks she's doing everything right, but she's still getting something fucking wrong, and that something is just empathy and just awareness, and just opening up her eyes and not like taking in what's going on around her instead of just being like, oh well, like I need to change it. And I just feel like she's she's too stuck up in her own world, and it's just like it's it's growing, honestly. It's coming to a head.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so now I'm gonna sound like like shit for what I'm about to say, but I didn't have like an actual um gravigger of the week because actually first it was it was Ruth. But then after really thinking about it, I was like, may maybe I'm just like easily swayed. Because I was like, well Ruth was like, oh, you know, like the whole the plant, these calling people, but at the heart of it, it's like she's trying to better herself. And and like, yeah, she doesn't have a proper way of going about it, but maybe it's also because she doesn't have the tools. She's obviously like a very repr repressed person.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I think that just her even doing this, like calling people and trying to own up to her shit is a big step for her. And even the shit with David, it's like you know, like touch and go. But I think that that's all part of her journey because like this is all new to her. She's very new at it. So like then I was like, well, I don't really know who would be my bravegger. Like I was kind of pissy with um Taylor's grandmother. Because I was like, even she's like kind of like giving that kid like a wishy-washy, you know, she's not giving her any straight answers, she's like covering for the mother, whatever. But then I was like, can it be Carla? Because Carla's a fucking train wreck. Um oh hundred percent. Excuse me. Unless like we later found out that she's like, you know, dead.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But it's like, you know, you're wow, you're straight up asshole. And then I'm like, I don't know. Like, I went back and forth to Brenda a little bit, to Brenda's mom, and really I just because I'm like Brenda's mom, like, why are you dragging your fucking kid into your fucking nonsense?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but at the same time, like, I don't know. Like, if my mom thought my dad was cheating, like, and she got nervous and she called me to help her, I would be there in a second, of course. And yeah, I'm not even if my mom ended up beating the shit out of a woman in the parking lot. Yeah, no, it's it's just like it seems like a normal mother-daughter thing to do, like, oh my god, I think dad's cheating on me, come. But like, it's an emergency, but not explaining it over the phone quite yet. Yeah, and like the relationship is rocky anyway, but I didn't think it. I thought like Brenda's mom was like kind of reasonable, and like maybe not with like choking a woman, but like I thought she was reasonable in the way that she was reacting. Like, hey, we have an open marriage and we have these rules, and I think your father's breaking one of those rules, he's he's doing something against me.
SPEAKER_01Either driven his car home and left that bitch stranded, or she should have had the car towed.
SPEAKER_03I'm just gonna reaction was reasonable for somebody else in that situation. Like, so I don't feel like like Brennan's mom, like it was entertaining, don't get me wrong. But like I wouldn't say that she duck her own grave.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, I get it. It was just that, like, on one hand, she's supposed to be like this poised, professional, like very upscale kind of person, and then you see her losing her shit. So I thought that that was nice. But the only reason that I even considered her for my gravetigger of the week was just because it was like you. Called your daughter for an emergency to watch this.
SPEAKER_03So it was like, I don't know, I guess for me it was a little awkward, but I understand where you're coming from, where you're saying like it's hard to figure out who could be a gravedigger. And now I'm seeing root situations through a different lens.
SPEAKER_01Well, but that's your lens because like I did I didn't consider anything that you said really. Like I started to, but then I was like, no, wait. So I never really gave it substantial thought. But I I think I kind of settle on Brenda though, only because she's still keeping Nate as a distance. She's like, first of all, he was in the broom first, blossom his teeth. If you don't like it, then go fucking piss in the yard. Um and then it's like she starts a conversation with him, and then she's like, okay, but I gotta go. And then not that it's necessarily wrong to fantasize about other people, like people are human. Um but I feel like this is also like a symptom of her distraction from him. Not that this is necessarily like a normal thing that she does, if that makes sense.
SPEAKER_03No, I agree. Okay, yeah, no, sorry, Tito just walked in because he's avoiding going on a walk, but he forgets that he really enjoys going on a walk until his lesions are done. So before we wrap up our episode, I just want to remind you what Lisa and I are doing this season and hopefully every season on. Lisa and I are on a feel good mission, uh, where we feel good and then we do good. Um, each episode we'd like to highlight a local business and a charity from a city or a town where our listeners that means you guys are a property. Oh yeah. I forgot about that. We'd love for you to send us suggestions on a local business or local charity from your area that we should talk about and get in touch with us. Our info is in the description of this episode. And so for this episode, we do have a business and a charity. Lisa, would you like to talk about them?
SPEAKER_01The business is called Los Hermanos Restaurant and Lounge. It's located in Superior Arizona. So shout out to all you guys in Superior Arizona, and thank you for listening. This is a family-owned business and it's been part of the local community for 47 years. So I urge you that if you are close enough, you should go and stop in, enjoy their food that they have to offer, and let them know that we sent you. The charity or the property, as apparently Sass and Sips likes to call it, is the Superior Food Bank, also located in Superior Arizona. So please give them a visit if you are dealing with any food insecurities, or if you'd like to make a donation. And I'm sure that they can use any help that you have to offer. And I will put all of the information for those two things in the show notes.
SPEAKER_03Guys, remember never drink and dry. Please make sure that you are getting home responsibly if you take a drink. And also, if you want to instead save your money on spending on yourself and maybe spend it on us, you could buy us a drink, like a cup of coffee or a bottle of wine.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that's and that, Brittany, is just one way how they can support this podcast. Other ways that you can support the podcast are by uh signing up for the subscription service for signing up to Patreon. You can make the donation, like she said, on buy me a coffee, or you can simply give us a five-star rating on whatever app you're listening to this on. You can tell a friend. There's lots of ways that you can support us. So, with that said, we will be back here with you guys for the next episode.
SPEAKER_03Which is a daisy.
SPEAKER_01Thanks. And I'm Brittany. Yeah. So until next time, I'm Lisa. I'm Brittany, and we are out of here.
SPEAKER_04See you next week.
