Hey, and welcome to this episode of Sass and Sips, the podcast where we drink and we dish and we sip and we sass. And Brittany watches. No, Brittany rewatches and I read and I watch. A little bit. Hi, Lisa. I'm Brittany. And we are your hosts. We are doing a watch rewatch of Six Feet Under. And today we're going to talk about episode four, Familia. But first, let's talk about what we're drinking.
SPEAKER_00Before we even talk about what we're drinking, at this time, I would suggest everybody pauses and goes right over to Patreon to listen to the pre-show. It just is such a good precursor to the actual show. I like how you kind of like it's like a warm-up.
SPEAKER_03You know what I mean? It is a warm-up. Uh sometimes we can give you juicy drama and gossip, but you know, tears start at one dollar. It's a great way to, I don't know, get our gossip and neighbor drama and also support the show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And I mean, like if you really think about it, we put out like an episode every week, right? Or like an episode every two weeks, but when we're on a good kick, it's like an episode every week, right? So if you divide that, if you divide four episodes, one each week by a dollar, it's really only 25 cents for an hour.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, you're right. Plus, sometimes we put out our little bonus episodes. That's what I mean.
SPEAKER_00They're getting cheaper and cheaper. It's like my god, like you would buy gum for that price.
SPEAKER_03We're cheaper than a pack of gum, Brittany. You're right.
SPEAKER_00That's right. Anyway, yeah, I am sticking to my usual. I have my Santa Margarita Pino Grigio. I love a I'm a basic bitch. Yes, I can. What about you, Lee?
SPEAKER_03I got my yellow tail, so I guess I'm a little bit basic too. My charaz.
SPEAKER_00No, I think that next I forgot what next episode's about. And I'm not looking at the episode titles until I have to, but let's just say it's like a coffee owner dies or some shit like that. We should totally have espresso martinis. Okay, I'm in. Yeah, no, I was really craving one earlier, and I'm like, I can't do that. I need to drink my wine tonight. Yeah, well, you could drink anything you want, yeah. But it'll fit if like a coffee owner dies, you know.
SPEAKER_03Okay, that's fair. Coffee shop owner, like maybe we should have been drinking champagne since that's what Brenda brought to dinner.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's like I was so audible during like that scene. I was just like, ah, so oh my god, I forgot that I remembered like a lot about their interactions, like Nate and Brenda, but I forgot that that happened, and so that was great. But anyway, going back to the beginning, this episode is called Familia. We start the episode with what may be like the worst date ever. This guy Paco, he's on a date with his girlfriend Sylvia. They're like in a car, and the car is broken down, they're in like some back alley, it looks like some fucking like factory or some shit. Like basically somewhere you don't want to be in.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's it's like um a very desolate place.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and you know, and because it's like 2001, there's like payphones everywhere. So he like he's like, stay here. Where no, actually, I love the part where he was like, it's like scream or something, right? Like, yeah, one of you are gonna die. Why'd you say that, dude? But yeah, so Paco tells Sylvia, like, stay in the car, you'll be safe here. I'm just gonna go run, give like my friend a call or whatever, like that. Like, he was he was calling to like get a ride because the car broke down, like, understandable, right? So he goes to the payphone, these like three like thug-looking guys come up to him while he's on the phone. Like the first time he tries calling, like it goes right to voicemail, so he calls back again, and while he's calling back again, like these three thugs approach him. You see Sylvie in the car, like screaming, they hold the gun to his head, and they're like, Like, where are you from? Right? Or something like that. And then he's like, like Paco looks right at them, looks right at the gun. He goes from your mama's pussy, bitch.
SPEAKER_03If we drank every time the word bitch was said this episode, we might have alcohol poisoning.
SPEAKER_00That's what I mean. Yeah, this is a great episode, it really was. And I mean, then he got shot, that wasn't cool, but I mean, we knew we knew it was gonna happen, but like in that moment, I like literally went right to like iMessage on my computer because I watched like the episodes on my phone, and I was like, I was texting Lisa and like literally with the gun in his face saying from your mama's pussy bitch.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it was well, he he does later say how he says anything he wants, and I guess that was his dying testament to that fact.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he I didn't realize like who he was or who they were in the moment. Yeah, we learn more about um why this incident happened.
SPEAKER_03Um at first I thought it was a robbery, and I was like, that's the stupidest robbery ever. They didn't even ask him for anything, and then I was like, Oh, wait, no, yeah, right?
SPEAKER_00I was expecting like, give me your wallet and like drop down, put chains on your head, some bullshit like that, yeah. And then immediately my mind went to like that scene in Clueless where she's like, I can't get down, this is a Vitaly, or something like that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, what she's like, Do you not understand? This is I can't remember what the dress was.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like so anonsiated to like draw it out, and she's like, Yeah, so I thought about that scene from Clueless, which is such a great movie, it really is better than the movie.
SPEAKER_03I feel like Jeremy's sister is also in Jeremy's sister, Sisto, yes, Roland with the homies. Jeremy's sister, no, not his sister, Sisto, Sisto, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Roland with the homies. Oh Brittany Murphy. She hits her head on the lamp. Yeah, yeah. Really good movie. Yeah, no, the soundtrack's like so much better than the movie, and the movie's so good already. Anyway, back to Six Feet Under. So he did, she screamed. I wonder how that ended up because right after that is like the right the next part, yeah.
SPEAKER_03The title card or whatever.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, how'd she get home? That's all I said now. She has a way. Hey, you know what? Let me shut up for a second. Lisa's gotta talk about continuity errors. Well, no, just okay.
SPEAKER_03She's over there banging like a fucking gorilla on the dashboard, like, no, Paco, no, honk the horn, yell out the window if you want to be heard. Otherwise, maybe you should shut the fuck up before those gang members come for you and shoot you too. I would have been like, I love you, buddy, and then you know, hit under the seat.
SPEAKER_00One or the other, you either honk the horn honk the horn and like hit the dashboard, or you're quite as fucking duck. Because if you you can't do both because you're gonna get noticed, right? I wouldn't want to be noticed. Like, if you could see somebody's unfortunate death and there's nothing you could do about it, like the best you could do is save yourself from that moment, right?
SPEAKER_03And especially you would think that they would come after her since she could see them and identify them. Exactly.
SPEAKER_00People don't think, yeah, no, these dumb scripted characters. I know, fake ass, fake people, and so now we're actually in the episode, and so the episode actually begins. I hate saying like the episode actually begins because the beginning of every single episode is like characters we don't know, and a story about somebody who dies, and then they're like theme of the funeral home. But like our story with the Fisher family actually begins with Nate and Brenda being questioned by the cops over the uh Gillardi house, like being burnt, like the one that they they bought across the street from right, he names them as suspects, so they're being questioned, and they're obviously being questioned separately, but the way they cut, you could see the same questions being asked, and their answers mostly lined up, and she's like, They're asking, What are they doing there?
SPEAKER_03And Brenda's like, We fucked, and Nate's like, We made love.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and then one of the cops that was speaking to Brenda was like, Well, can you be specific, you know, for the timeline? And she's like, I died. She's like, Well, first he went down on me, and he's very good at it, yeah. And so he took his time. I lost it. I was like, Holy shit, she is so brass. It's like brass, brass, brass.
SPEAKER_03I feel like yeah, I think either works. I don't know. And this whole episode, I feel like she was very detached to a lot of things, and I feel as though more and more everything is a fucking game for her.
SPEAKER_00She has such an attitude, like nothing in life matters, and she has like that, you know, like when people get really I do this sometimes too. Everybody does it. We get like really existential, and so I feel like that's just her whole personality. It's like nothing matters in the end. We're just dust on like a turning rock or spinning rock in space, like anything I do really has no implication, like without there's something like not connecting in her head. I mean, like it's fact.
SPEAKER_03She also kind of pushes them in Nate's direction, I feel, because when she's talking about how he was going down on her for an hour, and she's like, Yeah, he's got a lot of aggression to work out, yeah. And then even afterwards, when they said, Okay, and then one, she's like, I don't know, I got a call and I left.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't know what he did. And yeah, she's like, I don't know what he called up and I left. Yeah, that aggression thing. I heard it, it like kind of processed, and then it was like, Nope, and it went right back over my head. And so I kind of just put that part behind me.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, I didn't realize she was trying to pin it on him in that way, and trying to well, I don't know if she was trying to pin it on him per se, but I think she was trying to deflect from herself, yeah, saying, Look, I left and he was still there, yeah. Not necessarily because he did it, but look, I didn't do it. And focus on him, not me.
SPEAKER_00Wait, hold on. He was no, he woke up. I think he did say that um she took a phone call and left, and then I left after.
SPEAKER_03Well, he says we were exhausted, we left.
SPEAKER_00I don't even know if he says he did say that. He said, and then and then when I woke up, I left. Okay. Because that's why I like stopped for a minute like a second ago. Because I was trying to think if like he was awake when she took that phone call and left, and that's when she turned around, she was like, I would do anything, like she made some kind of comment about it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, she she told him something to the effect of I can't do this right now. It's there's there's someone else, and I but I can't talk about this right now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and she was like, I would do so much more, but that was that was a little bit before.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that was yeah, that's when he first saw the tattoo, but you're right, you're right. Okay, yeah, but but then again, you know what, you bring up a good point because it's been at least a day in their world since this has happened and they've spent time together, and he still hasn't she still hasn't brought it back up. What the tattoo or the person on the phone? The tattoo, the person on the phone, any of it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm surprised like none of that was mentioned. Um, from what I remember about the tattoo, it has a whole backstory, which like every tattoo does, so that's not a spoiler. So I think they're saving that for future episode. Okay, but we'll learn more about the tattoo, but that's definitely a future episode. I was just surprised that the person on the phone wasn't mentioned, but I think you and I were surmising in last episode that it could be her brother, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you're saying no, you were, or we both were. I don't know. And the cops didn't even ask her. You took a phone call. Who was it? Where did you go?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, logical question. Like she was an actual right. Um, what's that called? Suspect. Yes, I couldn't think of the word. Thank you. She was an actual suspect, like I know if that was me in that situation. I truly didn't do it. I'd be like, and I was talking to Lisa, and you could talk to Lisa and she'll vouch for me because like it was true. I went to her house and I recorded a podcast episode, but you know, that's what I would do, but she didn't at all, and so that was just like a little bit weird. And then right at the end of all the questioning, they were talking about the police officers were saying, and where like to Nate, they were saying, and where was your sister Claire? Do you know her whereabouts? And they were like, you know, she's been getting in trouble with the law lately, with like the whole like foot incident, right? Last episode, and so for the police to suspect that it's his sister was just really interesting. We'll get to that. Like I didn't what happened? I said, Yeah, we're gonna get to that. Yeah, yeah, we are gonna get to that, but anyway, um, back at home, the Fisher's AC breaks, and David thinks only third world countries should have to live that way. He's so stupid.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and then the repairman is like, okay, well, I'm gonna need like a week to fix it. And Ruth is like, three days. It's like, oh, okay, Ruth, you go, girl.
SPEAKER_00She puts a foot down. The foot that's missing. She just she takes it from the dog's mouth, she smacks it on the table. Put the foot down. Oh so yeah, so they're like AC breaks, and David's like, we can't run a funeral home without AC. He's such a fucking wet noodle. I can't.
SPEAKER_03I kinda I mean, I kind of get where he's coming from. It's California and it's a business, but it's it's not the worst thing in the world to happen.
SPEAKER_00No, not at all. But once again, like just his whole approach. Like towards the end of the episode, I feel like he's a wet noodle with a tiny little drop of hot sauce on him, but he's still bland as fuck, you know. Okay, I don't know. I don't know. It's really he's just it's annoying. I could do the show without him at the moment. Anyway, how do you feel about David?
SPEAKER_03Can we get to my notes on David at the end?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, of course, of course. So after after Ruth puts the foot down, no, well, her foot down to the repair man, David and Nate meet with Manny's parents, and they're talking about Paco's funeral. And so Paco How come you don't want to read what I wrote? I thought it was funny. What David Nate meet with Manny's parents with powerful regards. Like, I I read it and I was like, Is powerful a typo? No, it was his name powerful. Yes, yes, do you want to read your notes? I read it and I got confused. I was like labeling my books, like while okay, so like I was like prepping my library for my classroom while I was watching this episode, and I missed the guy's name, and so I'm seeing in Lisa's notes it's saying powerful with capital P and I'm like, maybe there was a typo, and it like corrected that to powerful with the P because powerful regards Paco's, and I was like, that doesn't make sense.
SPEAKER_03That's not English, it is English, it says regarding David and Nate meet with Manny's parents and powerful regarding Paco's fat ass funeral because he has mad cash. What he says. I want to see him have mad cash, Lisa, because he's an Alvarado king, he's a gang member. But that's the thing. So you don't see them at you don't see him at first. You see the parents, and David and Nate are so fucking stupid, and they're like, Oh, but if your son wants to paint, they're like, He's not my son, and he's like, My name is powerful, and I'm the leader of the gang, and I got mad cash, but not enough cash to make sure that Paco had a cell phone or at least a working charger, because then we wouldn't be here. Like, I don't know how much mad cash you have, but it should have been enough for at least a charger.
SPEAKER_00I mean, did they have burner phones at that time? I don't remember because I feel like if you're like in a gang like that, maybe you shouldn't have something that could be tracked on you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, maybe maybe like a little burner, but she had a phone. Sylvie had a phone right at the very beginning. He's like, try the celly again, and she's like, Nah, it's dead. That's what I'm saying. They didn't they could have at least gotten her a charger. She had a phone, she had like a pink flip phone. I missed that.
SPEAKER_00I was leaving my books.
SPEAKER_03That's what happens when you watch the episode like three times.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, no, that's why I should have watched it the second time. I was telling Lisa in the pre-show about that, but anyway, so Paco is Manny, but like that's his actual that's his like birth name is Manny, but his gang name is Paco. And so throughout the rest of the episode, he's really just referred to as Paco. So if you hear us say Manny or Paco, same person as the dead guy in this episode. And so David, fucking Mr. What Noodle has no clue what to do. He's like, Oh my god, like these gang members, like these Spanish gang members, what do I do? And he's like, Let me go talk to Rico, the one Spanish person who works here. Maybe he's probably the only one he knows. Like, you know, those people, I guess it's like an old mindset now, because thankfully I feel like the majority of society does not think this way, but you know, like the way society thought. Oh, like you're in a wheelchair. Do you also know this other person in a wheelchair? Like, you know that, like, joke, we're like, Oh, you're deaf. Do you know this other deaf person? Like, no, not all fucking deaf people know each other, right? I feel like it was the same thing, like going through David's mind. He's like, Oh, well, Rico's Spanish. I wonder if he knows he's gay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the parents want a traditional Mexican funeral. And David is just like, Well, let me go talk to Rico. Like, yeah, that's his solution. All Spanish, apparently. Right. Ignorant fucking whatnot. Meanwhile, Rico is busy, you know, curling a dead lady's hair. But David has to be like, Hi, I'm David, and I'm stupid and ignorant. Rico calls him out on it too, thankfully.
SPEAKER_00He does. I'm Puerto Rican. He goes, You're Puerto Rican? And Rico's like, because you don't know anything about me.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I forgot how long he says he works there, but like since he's 16, I think he said, or yeah, I something like that.
SPEAKER_00His whole backstory, like as of what we know so far, is that he what I understand about it was like maybe he was like on the wrong path in like high school, or he really didn't know what to do, and he saw himself not furthering his education after high school or even graduating high school, and that's where Mr. Fisher, like Nathaniel Singer, really helped him out and sponsored him to go to the the mortuary school, yeah. And so he's and he he looks about like 30-ish. So I mean he's got his second kid on the way. That's what I mean. Like he doesn't he looks young, but I feel like he's not young. I feel like he's definitely towards his late 20s, early 30s.
SPEAKER_03So I mean he's he's clearly been working there for a long time, and Rico is understandably insulted because he's like, first of all, I'm Puerto Rican, second of all, I've been working here for so long, and you don't know a damn fucking thing about me. And David is just kind of like gesturing towards his whiteness and using it as an excuse to be like, Well, but you probably know still know more than me. Why exactly?
SPEAKER_00So the only thing that like Rico has on him is the fact that like Rico probably speaks Spanish, and I think he does, he does because like at the end of that scene, well, he tells him to go fuck off in Spanish, yeah. Exactly. Well, I don't know Spanish, so I couldn't pick that up, but like um, yeah, so like if that was something that was needed, that's where Rico's services could be used up.
SPEAKER_03But that's not but that's not what he was looking for, but no, that's and Rico knows it, yeah.
SPEAKER_00No, no, no, that's it completely different. Rico, like, he he sees in this situation that like David's just really fucking ignorant. Honestly, it's like just easier to like just do what he's asking than argue with him about it, which is really sad. But Rico goes up, he starts talking with the family, and powerful starts saying some dumb shit. He pulls powerful into the next room, and because powerful looks at Rico and he's like, Where are you from? Right. And so Rico, like very, very um respectfully gets up and walks with Powerful into the next room, and he's like, Where am I from? And he goes off on him, and he was like, It was like really tough in that scene. And I was like, Oh my god, cute.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and um, but he lays it on and he's like basically, we're the only ones that are gonna. Put up with your gang asses. So that's it. You need us.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Manny's parents or Paco's parents have been saying that like the family's been turned away from like two other funeral homes. Right. Right. So it's true. I mean, like, that's definitely why. And so the fishers are willing to, and the fishers and Rico are willing to not just negotiate with family, but like deal with whatever issues are ahead of them. Right? Like somebody hears gang and they just like always assume violence, which is understandable. And so like that's my knowledge of it. Well, because that's all that's the only thing that would ever make the news. Exactly.
SPEAKER_03Nobody is gonna, you know, write a newspaper article about how the gang members sat on a park bench and had lunch.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, or like gave back to the community. Like nobody really talks about like the goods that gangs could do for neighborhoods, but yeah, so gangs equal violence. I was around the time of the riots in LA. So it I guess whatever. Yeah, and they they referenced that too in the episode, which I thought was interesting. So Rico pretty much like sorts out that scene, and the Rico basically saves a day, yeah, yeah. And the fishers go through with the funeral, and the family goes through with the planning. And so David and Nate then start talking about how white they are and why Claire couldn't have started the fire while Ruth was preparing for dinner with Brenda.
SPEAKER_03And because well, David David goes, Claire wouldn't have started the fire because she hates us, so she wouldn't have done it to help us.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was just like the way she said that line in the last episode, in the last scene of the last episode, like I literally played it too. Like the way she said that just I don't know, rubbed me wrong, but right, but I mean, like, they're right in that sense, like she tells them to fuck up literally in every episode so far. So, like, why would she do something to benefit them, even though it aligns with like her edginess, right? And Ruth is now preparing for dinner because Brenda's coming over for dinner. Favorite fucking scene of this oh my god, I know it's yours too, Lisa. Nate and David are sitting at the kitchen table talking about how like how like the fire could have started, and Nate literally like leans over to David and he says it loud enough for Ruth to hear, and she makes a comment. But Nate goes, Did you even know that the night that dad died, Claire was high on crystal math? And Ruth comes over to them and she's like, If you wanted to say what she said, she was like, Yeah, want to say something without me hearing. I suggest not saying it here, right?
SPEAKER_03Like go in a step, go in a different room, they're all in the same kitchen, and he's not really whispering it, he's just kind of leaning in and talking.
SPEAKER_00But Ruth is right there, yeah, yeah. And so I was really surprised that Ruth didn't overreact to that comment, even though it wasn't directly at her, but she was with ear within like ear range, and Nate had to have known that like his mom's right there, like he knows something is gonna get heard, right?
SPEAKER_03Because then the next thing, Claire comes in and she's all excited about some kid at her school getting busted with a taser. And I was so ready for Ruth to just drop the ball and be like, So how's Christmas? Right, you're doing tricks. Are you on drugs? Like, uh you know what I mean, just yell at her. And I'm like, it never came.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, like the kid didn't want breakfast, and you're accusing her of having an eating disorder. Twice, yeah, and so like to the point where Claire was like, Do you want me to have an eating disorder? Like, drugs are serious, and especially crystal meth.
SPEAKER_03That's not the right, and now you hear about how she was doing crystal meth and you have nothing to say about it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, which I don't know if that shows her acceptance, maturity, retreating to her self. That's not what I'm trying. I'm trying to say if we're seeing Ruth slowly stop helicoptering everybody around her and starts focusing more on herself, if that was right there, seeing Ruth's character development. Because in the last episode, like she totally would have flipped out over it, but maybe she's learning to stop caring so much about others around her because she's seeing the reality of the fact that now she's alone in this world. I mean, she has her family, yeah, but and she doesn't have her husband anymore. And I I mean, like, you're still like your individual with your spouse or without your spouse, but like but maybe she's not person.
SPEAKER_03I mean, she she did talk about how she's never lived alone that she was, I think she said she was 18 or 19 when she got married, so she really hasn't. That's really all she knows is like being awesome, is that life, right? Yeah, but at the last scene, um, we won't have to talk about it now, but in the last scene, I think I think that kind of proves what you were just saying.
SPEAKER_00Like seeing her starting to care more about herself and not about others, like in this case her children.
SPEAKER_03No, about her reactions and her the her mannerisms and the way she's talking to Claire.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes, you're right, you're right. Yeah, okay, we'll get to that then. But anyway, Claire comes in, she starts talking about how somebody got busted for showing like his friend like tasers at school, and they're all just like kind of staring at Claire, and then it goes to the next scene, and we see that David and Keith are shopping. David thinks that Claire needs a lawyer because of like this whole like fire situation, and he's right because he seems to have done a really shitty job keeping her out of police records. I mean, the fact that it's being brought up to Nate while he's being questioned as a suspect means her name's in some records, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00And so just a very, very quick preface. There is a word, I will spell it because I don't feel comfortable saying it, F-A-G. Um, it is said in this episode in the context of a slur towards David and Keith, and then they have like a reaction to it because of the slur. And so this is a scene in the show where they're confronted with homophobia by using this word, and so I don't feel super comfortable saying it. Um I'm gonna say the F word when I talk about it, but I just want to clarify that. So it's not just us using the slang, it's like this was literally said in the show, and we're just referencing it. But David and Keith, they were kind of done shopping, so they're bringing like their shit out to the car, they're letting it up, and like this guy was like waiting for their spot, and he was just like hanging out, waiting there, and then because they were taking too long, like putting their bags in the car and talking about Claire, the guy calls them like the F-word and then drives off. And Keith goes batshit and rightfully so, but at the same time, he uses his job to he sticks his badge in the guy's face, yeah. Like I was happy for him doing it in that moment because that was really disgusting of a stranger to do towards another stranger, but I don't know if that was abuse of power, sure might have been. I don't know. So, anyway, that happens, and um, yeah, I was I was wondering how you felt about that scene.
SPEAKER_03I don't fault Keith for his reaction. I mean, first of all, the guy in the pickup truck, he's so fucking impatient, there's no need for name calling if you don't like that spot, and they weren't being rude or or taking a long time on purpose, it just you know, they were just caught up or whatever, yeah. So the guy then speeds off, but he gets like four feet, yeah.
SPEAKER_00He like has to stop at a stop sign or some shit, or he's waiting for another spot, like maybe six cards down, like he is not far, yeah. So Keith jogs over and catches up, right?
SPEAKER_03And so I think that Keith should not have used his badge. I mean, he sticks his badge in the guy's face and he's like, make sure the next time you do that, it's not an LAPD officer, and then he's like, and now you got my badge number. I dare you to make a complaint. But was he supposed to get the the numbers from the imprint in his forehead? How does he have his badge number? But yeah, but David tries to pull him back, and Keith pushes him off of him, which on one hand it's like, dude, that's your man, but on the other hand, I I feel like he was just in the moment and he didn't he didn't want to be stopped, he wanted to show this. Um aside from using his badge, it wasn't too much of an overstep, if that makes sense, except for the fact that he brought his job into it.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, no, if it was just like a reaction, right?
SPEAKER_03Because he didn't like hit the guy, he didn't insult him, like he really didn't so it's a little hard to balance, yeah. And then but then oh, and then no, and then David is trying to make excuses for the guy, and I'm just like the fuck, David, and and Keith calls him on it, and Keith is like, Why do you hate yourself?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, David's totally, like heavily, like deep in the closet, which I mean, like we know this, like we've seen this throughout the last four, well, three episodes, including this one, four episodes. So, like, I want to say that his behavior in that situation was very expected. On top of that, David is non-confrontational, he is like the wettest noodle in the pot. You know what I mean? So, like, it was predictable for him to just try to brush it off and like not feed into it, and the feeding into it is you know, outing yourself in a sense, even though it's a stranger, it doesn't matter. There was also like a witness, not like a identified witness, but there was like a man walking by who was like looking at the situation, and um, I don't know if I forgot if this specific situation goes any further or not, but like I wonder if um there was any reason for them throwing like a stranger in there, unless to make the the situation of people at a grocery store seem real, right?
SPEAKER_03Right, but this is this goes into one of I mean I have I have a bunch of collective notes on David for this episode, and this is part of it. I feel like it's just easier to talk about them at the end. Oh, yeah, no, no, for sure. So we'll pick this back up at the end. Um, okay. David is then working on Paco's body, and this is the beginning of wisdom by gangbanger, because clearly he leads a sad life when the dead gang member gives great advice and is the only one that David can confide in.
SPEAKER_00And so the gang member giving him advice is just like his thoughts in the back of his head just being brought forward. Again, we'll pick this up at the end, but like it's a running theme for the rest of the show. Oh, yeah, no, no, no. No, the rest of the episode. Yeah, this isn't the first time. It this happens like at his actual funeral, this happens in another scene, like in between like the Paco's actual funeral and this scene. And then at one point, like Ruth even says to David, like, who are you talking to? Yeah, he's like myself, so um, so anyway, it's dinner time. Um well, the guest is arriving. Um, Brenda shows up an hour early, uh, shits on everything, and then says Ruth hates her, but she doesn't really care about yeah.
SPEAKER_01What a guest!
SPEAKER_00But those are all the things on one side of the scale, like weighing it down. It's like she shows up early, that's like a weight on the scale, and another one is like she shits on everything.
SPEAKER_03Right, she's just like walking around the foyer and she pops a mint in her mouth, and she's like, It's so kitsch. Oh, it's not as Adam's family as I thought. And she's just it's like she's just looking for shit to complain about.
SPEAKER_00But on the other end of the scale, she puts the bottle of champagne. So, I mean, like, at least she brought something because like Ruth was making comments earlier, like, Oh, does Brenda drink? And then David's like, I'll go out and get a nice bottle of Chanay, like bullshit, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so Ruth comes down, she gives her the bottle, and you know, Ruth thanks her, and she goes back up. And then Brenda and Nate end up going into the I think it's the chapel.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm gonna call it the chapel, it's like where the person's laid out with all the service, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And he starts to vent, and she's she fucking beckons him, and she's just like, Come here, why? Just just do it, and of course he fucking does.
SPEAKER_00And he's venting, and then and so now the root being like, Okay, dinner's ready, like, let me go get the kiddos, and she's like walking down the stairs to like the main level where the funeral home is, and she hears this noise that I thought it was like a duck.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, what the fuck kind of noise is that? That wasn't that wasn't the noise that I thought. That is not a sex noise, that is not an I am enjoying myself noise. No, that was a little deep. It wasn't like a uh, it was like a it was.
SPEAKER_00I think that was the noise exactly, and she's just like, What the fuck is that noise? Like, who like moved the chair on the wooden floor and it made a noise, right? And so she goes down and she opens up the doors to the chapel, nice voice of words, and she sees her son going down, yeah, and he's like literally like in Brenda's crotch, and oh my god, like to watch this scene. I for I really truly like it's been a while, like I forgot this scene happened, but to see it again, and like I felt like I saw it for the first time when I saw it. I was just like, fuck this fucking girl.
SPEAKER_03Like, what the fuck is wrong with her? Ruth drops the vase that she's carrying. Nate looks horrified, and Brent is like, damn, it's over. Like, I don't know, she's just so indifferent.
SPEAKER_00Her like, she had no her legs were still spread, and she's like, Oh, it's over.
SPEAKER_03No affect whatsoever. Like, there's there's something unplugged up there. You know who else doesn't have any affect, right? Like psychopaths.
SPEAKER_00I feel like there's a small sociopath in her, but sociopath. I always no, no, no, no. I wasn't correcting what I was just saying, like psychopath, sociopath. I know there's a difference.
SPEAKER_03I think I always confuse the two, I conflate the two, or however whatever the word is that makes me sound smarter.
SPEAKER_00Um, maybe she does show more signs of sociopathology only because she it's more like involving other people's psyches that she fucks with rather than crimes like um like physical crimes. And so I would classify her in that sense, and she's she's so into herself in that sense, and so either or doesn't matter, she has some pathy going on there, so there's some path going on, but anyway, so yeah, fucking hashtag awkward because Ruth comes to comes to tell them that dinner is ready.
SPEAKER_03They must have thought they were in the secret channel, someone spoiled his appetite, and then and then I love at the table, and then they're like, I hope you're gonna stay for desserts. Peach cobbler.
SPEAKER_00I I was waiting for Brenda to make a comment. Oh, well, you know, only for one of us because Nate has his dessert early.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and then and they're talking about what she does, and she mentioned she mentions acupuncture and they walked away. Yeah, he went to to go get the sauce, and she mentions acupuncture, and Ruth asks if that's where they put the pins in people, and she goes, Well, I use my thumbs and my elbows, and she goes, So you put your thumbs in people?
SPEAKER_00She's like, Well, that is part of my job. And she's laughing as she's saying that too. Like, she knows she made a joke, she knows she made a little funny, and she's laughing.
SPEAKER_03And and Ruth is still just like and Claire is so enamored with this whole thing. I mean, she she yeah, she's getting the biggest kick out of all of this.
SPEAKER_00Between seeing a glimpse into David's private life and then having conversations with Keith, and then now seeing like what her other brother's up to. It's like I feel like she's finally in this in this episode in that scene, you see her like not feeling like the black sheep of the family, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And it's we don't even get a lot of clear in this episode, but the parts that we do are very point poignant, you know, they're very telling.
SPEAKER_00But which is nice, like it's yeah, it's nice to know without knowing the full thing. So now, as David is having a conversation with Dead Paco, Ruth interrupts to announce Mr. Powerful's here, and then she wants to know why he stopped going to church with her. Like, she's just like, Why did you stop going to church with me? And David's like, Can go somebody else, and she's like, That cop, that black man.
SPEAKER_03She she's like, Is it the black man? And and Uncle's like egging him on. He's like, Come on, come on, don't be a bitch. But David admits, and he's like, Yes, it is.
SPEAKER_00You know that very familiar, I know you know it, that very familiar saying, like, the apple doesn't fall far from the trade. Well, we see like the ignorance and absent-mindedness and tinge of racism that runs from Ruth to David in this episode. Yeah, yeah. All you had to say was like your cop friend or your rocket ball buddy, but like to identify him as the black man is just so unnecessary.
SPEAKER_03We know probably the only black guy she ever knows. You're right, honestly, you're right, even though they live in LA, like right, like it's a cultured neighborhood. But you know what though? I don't, I mean, I've never been to California, but I know growing up in New York City, New York City is is a super diverse place. But even with that being said, New York City can be a segregated place because if you think about it, most neighborhoods, maybe not as much Manhattan, but most neighborhoods tend to lean in one culture or another. Yeah, so you can conceivably live in a neighborhood surrounded mostly by people with the same culture or the same background as you. That's not to say that if you get on a subway, you're not gonna have one of each, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and that's the difference of living in a suburb and living in a city. It's the fact that within 15 minutes, a very or within like five minutes, you could be in a different part of your city, a different town within your city.
SPEAKER_03But that doesn't there's no reason, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you might have friends of another culture. Oh no, no, no, for sure. You know what I mean? So I under I can I can understand that part of it, that's all I'm saying. Yeah, you know, and it because it it really does, even in a big city, like I grew up in Brooklyn, but there's there's plenty of neighborhoods in Brooklyn where there's one dominant culture, and I can totally understand if you don't have friends that are very different from you. That's not to say that you don't ever be around them or you don't know that they exist.
SPEAKER_00Oh no, like I'm sure she's asked people a color on the streets before, but you're right, like that may be like besides Rico, which she probably doesn't see Rico as a person of color because he is very light-skinned, like she probably never had a person of color in her inner circle, yeah, in that sense, right?
SPEAKER_02Right, right.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, she also may not consider him because it doesn't fit the stereotype. You're right.
SPEAKER_00So maybe that's just like such like a because you I'm sure that you've heard where people will talk about whatever, whether it's a race or a culture or religion, and then be like, oh, but but they're one of the good ones, and it's like asshole, like you know, it's like you're putting stereotypes like different stereotypes on different cultures and races and ethnicities, yeah. Yeah, yeah, and so that may just be a stereotype ingrained in her head. Oh, like there are no black cops, there's only black criminals, and which was a big ignorant mindset of the time, still an ignorant mindset of the time, but it's still a big ignorant mindset now, yeah. Yeah, that's what I mean, like of the current time, but that may just be the mindset. I don't know, I'm going too deep into this. I was gonna say, like, maybe she didn't have access to the internet or the news as much, or maybe she truly is just ignorant, but like things are very like I feel like the general public is more exposed to people and issues and everything more now with current media than 20 years ago, 21 years ago.
SPEAKER_03So but also the problem with ignorant people is that they don't know they're ignorant, yeah, they don't know how much they don't know, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And it's like she's being naive in that sense. It's it's not nativity, right? No, I understand what you're saying, and you're right, yeah. So anyway, that's Ruth. And you I mean you can see that and understand it without saying. It too because it's just it's all over her. But she she just got pissed that, like, well, she didn't get pissed, she was just questioning David about like why he hasn't gone to church for her anymore. I don't know where that came from, but it was one of her fucking dumb shits that she just blurts out out of nowhere. So yeah. Anyway, after that, uh David and Dead Paco are like now critiquing the music because we're at his funeral now and they're like playing this, like it's like a Mexican like bolero, some shit.
SPEAKER_03I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like some some music associated with like his culture, but like not his specific culture. Like if I were to choose any type or any genre of music that maybe he would align himself with, I would say maybe like rap or like rock or alternative music or something that maybe a 20-year-old who listened to. That's not something that right, yeah. That that was his parents' soundtrack. He's like the music is whack, and then David's like the music is whack, and then Rico walks over and he's like, the music's whack. So everybody is just right, just going along with it for like his parents' sake.
SPEAKER_03After they call Rico over to change the music, Rico suggests that Ave Maria and David and Dead Paco are both like yes at the same time. I found that interesting because it seemed like up to that point David was taking his cues from Dead Paco, and now they are in sync. Maybe we didn't wait for him to say yes.
SPEAKER_00Well, Dead Paco is just David's like of course, like conscious thought. I I can't even say unconscious because he's conscious enough to have the comments about it.
SPEAKER_03Of course, I mean he's he's a figment of David's imagination, but that was just something he was so certain on. But Dead Paco is the one who said, like, what's up with this music? And then David acted on it. Yeah, I know it might not be a big deal, but it's just something that I noticed. That was I think that was actually the only time in the episode where they were in sync.
SPEAKER_00And I don't know, it could have just been nothing, but no, but you're you're right though, because as of now, like we're assuming that Dep Paco doesn't have independent thought, it's just David's thoughts through Depp Paco, but he came up with that one all on his own, from what we understand, yeah. About like because it's not like David was talking first, and Paco was reacting to something going on in David's life, like this was independent thought outside of David's uh internal issues.
SPEAKER_03He was just really deeply thinking about how terrible the music is, but whatever, couldn't have been worse than that country shit for the uh the swindler guy, yeah. Country rock.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, yeah. But while this scene's happening, Claire like ends up making eyes at a Gabe look-alike gang member. You're right. He didn't look, I thought it was Gabe at first.
SPEAKER_03Gabe's got like a skinnier head, but you're right. He like, yeah, but after I did a double take and I was like, wait, no, that's not Gabe.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, no, no, it definitely and I think that's like why Claire was been like all googly-eyed and like trying to be coy to him from across the room about it, because maybe Claire is discovering that she has a type.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they go down, like they make eyes at each other, and then they end up downstairs in the work, yeah, like the work area, and they're smoking, and she's she's like so fascinated by him. She's like, Have you killed anybody? He's like, I don't know. I shot at a few, I don't know if they died. And then she starts to say, Oh, people think I set the house on fire, and he's like, Well, did you? And she's like, What do you think? She doesn't answer, but it's like she's getting off on the excitement of the perceived danger.
SPEAKER_00And speaking of getting off, did you notice that like the dead person lover comes back?
SPEAKER_03Yes, but wait, we're not even there yet. Because then, because then the guy is like, Do you? I don't remember if she brings it up or he brings it up, but he's he brought it up.
SPEAKER_00She was like, I want to show like, what does it feel like shooting a gun? He was like, shoot a gun one day.
SPEAKER_03And yeah, he's like, You want to come down to East Lost and shoot a gun, you want to hang? And she's like, Don't tell me because I will. And right there, he's like, You don't you don't understand? Like, this is not a game. I mean, those are not his words, but but basically that's what he's telling her. And and he's he's so harsh with her, but but he's like, You don't, you're not gonna have to live with the fact that you didn't help your friend, like you didn't answer the call. And and I think that she she got a reality check real quick because she's before that, it's all fun in games for her.
SPEAKER_00She was so wrapped up in like the venture of life without realizing yeah, her curiosity's implications on other people, right? Other people are living like real lives, and she's just seeing it as if like it's a big game, like you were saying. Yeah, yeah, and he like gripped her wrist and everything. She's like, You're hurting me. And like when he didn't stop in that moment, I think that was like a reality check to Claire. There will be people who don't listen to your every beckon, yep, you know. So uh just as David's getting a tour of tattoos by the like one of the one the guys that shows up, like one of the I'm assuming gang members, like yeah, because he's like, This is when I got jumped in, and then eat the tattoo on his stomach is the name of the gangs.
SPEAKER_03It took three weeks to heal.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, and he was like ripped, and like you know, David was trying to do an innie on that one. He was trying to talk. Just as David's getting the tattoo tour, he's interrupted by the funeral horror from episode one. That's what I meant. Like speaking of infatuated by other people's actual real lives, thinking it's a game. Here comes this fucking bitch that was talking to David, and like that was the one that like he screamed at because he was having a hallucination about his father or whatever. And um, and she's touching his wrist and she's like, That's so nice to see you again.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, she's like, I just want to go in and pay my respects. And David's like, that's not a good idea.
SPEAKER_00But he's like, Did you know him? And she's like, Oh, you know, I read about him, and I just feel so bad for all the children that are dying. She's the one who mentions the riots, actually.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but what I what I was a little bit unsure of was when he he tells her, Why don't you just send the card? And he's he's really physically trying to get her out of there, yeah. Is it for her because like for her safety because of his perceived sense of danger because they're gang members, or because she's just a fucking annoying bitch?
SPEAKER_00I thought it was because she was a fucking annoying bitch, to be honest. Okay, I think he's on to the fact that like that, I think the way that like him or Rico were so active in the last episode about the funeral jump, not the funeral jumper, the casket jumper. I think he recognizes there are like certain traits of people at funerals or people who get off on like deaths and shit like that. And so I think he like pinpointed her personality and was like, She's a funeral hoe, she's got it. So actually, it could have been option three, simple respect for the family grieving, but yeah, no, I exactly, and I think in that it was like he recognized she's one of those, and then he was like doing it like respectfully, just being like just send the card, but he was trying to like sweep her the fuck out of there because that wasn't her place absolutely.
SPEAKER_03And then once she realizes she's defeated, you see her with her paper, she crosses out that obituary and circles another one.
SPEAKER_00Like, yeah, I wonder if we're gonna see her again, too.
SPEAKER_03I would probably say yes, since we've already seen her twice.
SPEAKER_00Imagine in like season four, she like just comes back out of nowhere. Oh my god, maybe. Oh my god, that would be funny if she did too, and like I forgot about that, and now I'm saying it, but anyway, so Nate is trying to comfort Paco's mom, and he admits to her how much he never knew about his dad, and and how much he never said to him before he died.
SPEAKER_03This wasn't, I mean, it was an emotional scene, it was a sweet scene, but this lays the groundwork for something from for later, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then when that scene comes up, we have a lot to talk about, but um, dead pocket calls David a bitch again, again, right? Like drink and tells him he should apologize to Keith. And like at first, David was trying to like argue with him on it, and he was like, No, like uh, and so I like in that scene, I was like, Okay, well, David's confronting his like intrusive thoughts, and he's not trying to conquer his own thoughts, he's trying to actually lean into them and follow through. But David's disappointed at the funeral is calm. Yeah, he he was expecting like crossfire and shit, which is like so ignorant, but noodle again, so it's not even like worth elaborating on. This is typical David behavior, right? I don't know why I said um, I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, I'll do it. Ruth comes down and she announces that the police determined the fire indeterminate, and Nate decides that that doesn't rule out Claire. He also tries to apologize to her for eating out his girlfriend in the invisible funeral chapel. But Ruth is like, no, no, no, I'm gonna have a minute.
SPEAKER_00The way he was explaining it too, he's like, I'm sorry for like what you like came down and witnessed earlier. And she just looked at him like, I don't want to like go through this, and he's like, you know, when I when I went down on yeah, she's like, I don't think so funny, he ever explains himself, like when you know, when he was like he slipped over Brenda's, and um David's like, you don't have to tell us everything, right? Right. This is again a situation where he's just like too, I don't know, that's just who he is, which is like I don't know, that just makes his character. Um David crashes Keith's cool church to apologize. I thought that church was cool too, Lee. Right, yeah. So, like, because the next scene, like, we see that Keith's at church, and I don't know who he's with, but then we see David's at that church too, and the church is just really um progressive. It seems very, very progressive. And so after church, we see that Keith is walking in, David's trying to catch up with him, and David is trying to apologize, but Keith doesn't really like accept the apology path. Yeah, and Keith tells him that he'll wait, but he's not going backwards because he's like, I was you. Keith pretty much levels out with David on the sense that like I know what it's like to be causative because I was causative, but I'm not doing this anymore. Like, I am out.
SPEAKER_03He's like, I've well, he admits to him, yeah, that as a gay guy, that it's affected so many things, and he's not gonna apologize because how many times he finds derogatory shit on his locker at work, or even if he has to call for backup, he doesn't know if they'll even come because of something so stupid that he's gay, yeah. And so he's like, I'm not, I'm I don't feel bad for sticking up for myself.
SPEAKER_00And so I mean, like he had validity in like his sad story, but it was just like I feel like Keith is so open and raw anyway, as a character. I wasn't surprised by him opening up in this sense to David, but I feel like David also needed to hear this, so I also it also kind of makes the aggression make a little bit more sense.
SPEAKER_03And even the fact that he did use the police card, you know what I mean, and and bring that part up. I don't know if I still agree with it, but it makes more sense after hearing about how that's one of his biggest sources of angst about it, is the fact that he is a police officer and he still has to take shit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and let's connect this. Um, let's do a little text-to-text connection here. Um for context in that joke. I'm an ELA teacher. So, you know, right on right on par.
SPEAKER_03I was like, are you texting me? I didn't get it.
SPEAKER_00Oh no, no, no, no. I'm like connecting one show to another show. Um, I've been outside of Six Feet Under, I've been slowly working my way through Bookly 99, which is like an awesome, awesome show. But I just recently watched um the episode where there was like some kind of like it wasn't the main plot line, it was like a subplot, but it was kind of like diversity training, but for like LGBT. And um, it was like uh I don't know, like Captain Holt was like I mean Lisa, you've watched the show, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I'm pretty sure it was like Captain Holt was like talking, or I don't know, I think it was like Andy Sandberg was like talking um about like being gay to other police officers, even though he's not gay in the show. Like I forgot what character was there. It would make sense if it was Captain Holt because he is gay, but right, um maybe it was maybe she's also gay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the um I can't think well, did you say her name? Rosa yeah, well, she's bi.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean like by still gay. That's how I I mean that by is like half gay, but like I don't know, like when I say gay, I know what you mean, like by people too. But um yeah, I forgot who's in that scene, but I know that like it was an issue in like a different pre-sight that um like there was like some homophobia, and like I mean to make to create that scene and then to like implement it in like I don't know, maybe that was like 2016, right? Ish. I don't know, it was not one. I guess it depends on what season it was, but yeah, yeah, it's like season, it's like one of the last ones. I think season six is like the last one, so it was like five or six. Um, but that show ran until like 2020. Okay, so maybe this was like literally like 2019, 2018. Okay, but to make that joke so recently, or not like a joke, but I mean, like that's it was a sketch to do the sketch means that's like still a really like apparent issue that like there's homophobia and like government like sanctions, you know.
SPEAKER_03I mean, but okay, maybe this might be an unpopular opinion, but I am totally convinced that there are many a man, and maybe women too, who go into the career of law enforcement because it's a tough guy, and I I use the term guy loosely, right? But a tough guy job. Like, look at you, you're the law, like you're the fucking law. You you carry a gun, yeah, yeah, yeah. People have to listen to you. Right. And so I mean, there's plenty of people who who want to do the job because they actually want to help people and and they believe in in it, right? But I feel also my theory is that the more homophobic you are, the more gay you are. And so you mean like closeted? Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like if you're openly homophobic and super like because some people are like, oh, it's not homophobia, you're not scared of gay people.
SPEAKER_03No, you're you're scared to be outed as a gay person. That's where the fear comes in. Gotcha. And it's like this overcompensation bullshit. And then it yeah, because you can't you can't just accept that you can still be you, and where you stick your dick doesn't matter.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, unless somebody's coming um with the stance of like religion heavily backing their beliefs.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, but I'm just saying, like it doesn't, it doesn't a gay man is not any less of a man because he sticks his dick in another man. Exactly. That's just stupid. But there are plenty of people who think like that. And me, I I've always said it like I think that the more homophobic a person appears to be, the more they hate themselves and they're hiding that old that same shit inside themselves because it's it's they're deflecting it's it's fear to be outed and jealousy that they can't be outed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So it's it's pretty much like they're deflecting themselves in that situation. Yeah, so it's like I'm I'm really afraid of spiders. So I mean, like, secretly a spider. Oh but if like spiders can kill you. If I see as yeah, reasonable fear. Well, you know, apparently gay people can too, to the people who are homophobic, but I mean any person can kill you. No, exactly. I'm just like, you know, like the dumb shit that like homophobic people come up with. Like, oh yeah, they're terrible for the earth, they'll kill you, like they're gonna hurt our children, anyway. Yes, yeah, like if I'm afraid of a spider, my sister's afraid of a spider, I'm just gonna like shit on the fact that she is to deflect from how much I am, you know, and so that's like in that sense, it it is deflecting as uh like a almost like a coping strategy or like um like a defense, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And so, but and imagine imagine being anybody, right? Even a cop who who's looked at as this authority figure, right? This whatever, and you are gay, but you're closeted, so like it, and it's not even closeted because because closeted people may still be having relationships, but you're you're not even allowing yourself that much. And here comes this guy who has chosen to be true to himself and live his life the way he wants to, how fucking mad would that make you be? And that's the thing, right? Like the people who can't bring themselves to be who they are, it's easier to project than to accept themselves.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, um, I'm gonna make a comparison to communities of people or a community and how it's separated, and it's not an exact analogy in a sense, it's just how I'm gonna talk about David from now on. If you're deaf, you're either capital D deaf or low act deaf. Do you know what that means? No. Okay, that's fine. I mean, like I I studied um American Sign Language when I was like in uh CSI. So when you're capital D deaf, that means that you're you use sign language. If you're in America, you're primarily using ASL. But if like if you're in the UK, you may be using BSL, like Britain Sign Language, British Sign Language, whatever. So if you're in the United States, you're using ASL, you live in a community with other deaf people, um, you support deaf establishments and um like um maybe businesses run, a small business is run by deaf people, you congregate with deaf people, you probably go to a like your children go to a deaf school, or maybe your children of age go to a deaf university, um, or they're in a program with other deaf people. You know what I'm trying to say, like you're in the community. If you're lowercase D deaf, those people don't even like being called deaf. They like being called hard of hearing.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00And so the people won't use sign language, they'll primarily rely on um like lip breeding. Those people also tend to get cochlear implants, which are like the implants that are on the center of your head that help you hear. A lot of people, like capital D people, um are not very into that idea because you're removing a sense of your personality by entering the hearing world.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, once you said it, I remember like in in my high school, there was a significant deaf community, and I had I had friends who were capital D deaf and lowercase D deaf. Yeah, so but both of them, I mean, I don't like they taught me some words, and I knew like basic shit, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But both of them lip read because they they definitely could, and it's so much easier, I'm sure, for the capital D population to go into mainstream society having proficient lip reading skills because if you're capital D deaf and like you're in your community mostly, but then like you have to go to shop, right? Right, and it's like down the block, and like that's kind of like outside of your like capital D neighborhood, and now you're going with people who are hearing, yeah, to have that ability to lip read and to have that as a practice skill. It's it's like a useful life skill because I mean, capital D people understand that not everybody's deaf. But my comparison in this sense was to show that I think Keith is capital G gay and David is lowercase G gay. Gotcha. Yeah. So he's a little G. He's a baby G. Yeah, yeah. And so, like I you were saying, like he just he's not like even closeted people can, you know, like have relationships, and he's not even allowing himself to have that. He just doesn't really want to be associated with any of it. But he wants it, or he is it. Not that he wants it, he is. I mean, like, it's not a choice that he's making. Like, if you're gay, you're gay, if you're not, you're not. But like he so much is it, but won't allow himself to be it. Right. Yeah, so he's lowercase g.
SPEAKER_03Guy in the show. Yeah, because even when he's out in public with Keith, it's not romantic. It's not I mean the last time they might as well just be buddies. Exactly. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I don't know.
SPEAKER_03So what happens next, Lisa? Okay, we go back to Brenda and Nate. And Brenda thinks that she should make a peace offering to Ruth, and Nate discourages her. Then he orders her to bed, and she's like, sex doesn't solve everything. So, like, oh, it's only when you give an order. Okay, got it. Everything's on her time and her work. Yeah. Later they're back at the house. Claire's watching the partridge family. And Nate sits down with her and asks if she's okay. And she's like, Yeah, except that my she's having problems with her pimp, and he's gonna take away her smack. And Nate's like, Well, he gotta be such a bitch. He's just he's just annoyed that she's a teenager. Like, and and she tells him, She's like, Why do you always assume that uh that I'm not? It's like, yeah, Nate, like why do you assume she's not?
SPEAKER_00And he probably just has that disconnect from like leaving when she was so small, and he like he doesn't know anything about her, really. Yeah, no, I mean, like coming back home and seeing her, like an almost adult, you just and then dealing with adult issues like the death of their father, like you could see him like just trying to you know have an adult relationship with her because he saw one side, now he's seeing the other. Like he saw her when he was she was a child, now she's an adult, right?
SPEAKER_03And that's fine to want to have an adult conversation, but he could have opened with, Hey, how's everything going? Not are you okay?
SPEAKER_00So yeah, it's weird because I feel like he's like tries to be like this parent to her, like in the first episode where he was like, pull over, and like when she was driving home from the hospital, but at the same time, like he he treats her as if she is an adult, and she grounded him in that sense in that scene, which was good. Um, so then the next scene was really, really important to the storyline of the the Fisher family business, um, or like the Fisher brother business, whatever. David and Nate explain that they need um they need to do improvements to keep up with uh Girardi, and that you know, like it, they they're definitely behind the times and they need to like have computers and they need to, you know, like catch up, right? With like modern technology and everything, and all of this is going to cost about like $93,000, which is a lot of money. And it was especially more money back then than what it is compared to now, right? So they asked their mom, they asked Ruth for the money almost as like a loan, like they're asking.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, they did ask, they they asked for it to be a loan, and so like when they're like, you know, you don't have to.
SPEAKER_00She's like, I know that she's so matter-of-fact in this scene, but she's so uh um, I don't know. I don't want to make a false stereotype about her. Actually, you know what? I'm not, I'm not. She was very irresponsible with money in the last episode, and so I and she brings that up. I just didn't expect her to talk about money in this scene the way that she did because she showed such irresponsibility in the last scene. Yeah, she was also going through ship, so I don't want to take that away from her, and I don't want to be like, I'm supposed she knew, like she was talking so like educated about money. Like, I don't want to say that demeanor character, but compared to her previous actions, I didn't expect her to come in saying that she she will give them the money, but she's not giving it as a loan, she's giving it as investment, she's buying it from the family business, and she'll talk to them later about um her her her payback, or she used words I was just like, okay, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well, she figures that they might be a better investment than the track or then like tech stocks, yeah. And then she also tells David, she's like, and David, you have to come to church with me sometimes.
SPEAKER_00I'm just like on the shit again.
SPEAKER_03Wow, Ruth, that was good. You you know exactly when to say that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I guess uh a couple visits to mass cost 93,000. Yeah, so I think I said Girardi last time, but I meant Gillardi. Gilardi. I see Gillardi, and I think Girardi, like the the the Girardi's, like the the Beverly Hills housewife, like that whole thing. Yeah, Erica Jean Girardi was married to Tom Girardi, who yeah, he he doesn't practice law anymore because I'm pretty sure he got his like license stripped. I don't know. You could look into him. There's like a whole documentary about like terrible. He pretty much like stole money from the families of like uh like plane victims, like plane crash victims and like burn victims, and he was stealing and nice, taking so much money, yeah. It was terrible. But like his house was his house, his wife is uh housewife, like on like the Bravo show. So you saw this one. I don't watch, yeah, yeah, it's okay. I don't watch anymore either. I can't do it, but anyway, so I I always think of that. But anyway, Gillardi presents a lowball offer, and another threat to David and Nate at their meeting, they decide to all meet up together, basically. Yeah, they're at a diner. Yeah, prior to this, prior to meeting up right beforehand. David's having one one more conversation with Paco, and in this conversation, Paco gets physical with him and like puts him, like takes his throat and chokes him like against his mattress, and not in the way that David may like. Like it was scary, and like you can see through David's eyes that his heart was racing so fast. Like Paco was literally threatening him. David's probably like, oh gang violence, like in my head. And um, Paco's like, You see what I did to you? See the way that I made your heart race. You need to do this in your meeting today to get your point across. That's how you scare someone. So David's a new man now. We go into this meeting at the diner. Gilardi's just being a piece of shit, and throwing them like a low ball and telling them we're never gonna like make it or anything like that. Nate's trying to lead the conversation because that's what he usually does because David's the wet noodle, and then all of a sudden the drop of hot sauce goes on his noodle. And that that sounds wrong.
SPEAKER_03Um, I mean, yes, but a couple of drops. Yeah, he pushes the dishes or something, and it makes like a clatter, and so you see you could see people in the back kind of turn around, and then it got quiet, and it's like David got a brand new set of balls because he's like, You or someone you love, and basically he's like, I'm not gonna kill them, but I'm gonna show you how it feels, or you know, something to that effect. But Nate is first Gillardi laughs because he thinks he's like, Oh, look, fuck a David, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like what's this?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but David doesn't back down, and Nate is even like, What the fuck is happening here? And then he tells him, you know, get the fuck out of here. And Nate is like, What was that? And David's like, I think I'm gonna puke.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's too much for him. Gillardi just seems like he's kind of like done trying to convince these guys, like whatever David said and did um seems to scare him off for a little while. So Lisa wrote notes out because she's the best person ever. And I'm reading her notes. She's so funny. Lisa writes that in the next scene, Brenda proved she's a fucking liar, brings Ruth a present, and Ruth warms her, uh, warns her to be careful with Nate. So Brenda flips on and off the switch, as we know, and so she, regardless of saying to Nate that she doesn't care if, like, yeah, yeah, she she does some like dumb shit where she's like, Oh, like I I went a little crazy at the bath and body store. Like, yeah, it was.
SPEAKER_03And Ruth is happy, a little like weirded out, I think. And oh yeah, and Brenda says that sometimes she sees a glimpse of them working out, and Ruth, Ruth just tells her to be careful because he's more fragile than he knows, and she goes, Aren't we all a little fragile?
SPEAKER_00What like just say okay and leave? She turns around, Ruth closes the door, and you could see her like just draining all the fake bullshit out of her. Like in her face, she was like, Oh yeah, yeah. Oh what the fuck? Ask tracked off the list. I can go back to being a fucking bitch again. Yeah, at this point, somebody should drink. We're saying bitch a lot. I also see it in your comments for the next paragraph. Uh, Mr. Powerful, then drink in the next scene. Yeah, right. Uh, then in the next scene, tells Rico to get all the fishers because gang members are just like us and pray at funerals.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, look at that. They could have their own column in Us Weekly.
SPEAKER_00This was a powerful scene. I felt myself tearing up a little bit, but I didn't quite shed a tear.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so they they all the fishers and the Mannies and the Alvarado Kings, like the Pacos, the the Bullins. Mine is Claire because I don't know where the fuck she was. I don't know. Yeah, because the whatever. Because according to the obituary, this takes place on a Sunday, I think. So shouldn't she? Because at first I was like, well, maybe she was at school. This looked like the next one. Yeah, it was a Sunday. Okay. Well, she should have been home, but anyway, point is they're all there and they all hold hands in a circle, and Mr. Powerful leads them in prayer. But he he prays for Manny and he uses his name Manny as well as Paco, but he also prays for the Fishers and for Nate Sr.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but Nate was talking earlier with Manny's mother and consoling her in the sense of, I know how you feel about loss because I lost my father on Christmas Eve.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_00And so to see that Manny's mother had a conversation with Mr. Powerful, whereas at the beginning of the episode, they were so total like polar opposites, like not trying to get along for the their common interests or their their common, like their connection, which we talked about. To now seeing that they had this conversation, they're they're all holding hands in the circle and praying for him, was like a really nice thing. You know, it was really nice to see like everybody come together for the sake of like this kid. And it was nice just to see like that reference to Nate Singer as well. And as the pole bears take the coffin, Paco leaves David with words of wisdom. Get ready, guys. Don't be don't be a bitch. At this point, you should dial 911 because y'all have alcohol poison.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, and as we start getting to the end of this episode, meaning the six feet under episode, not the podcast episode quite yet. Uh, David and Keith are now bowling, which I was kind of jealous about because I kind of want to go bowling. I don't know why. I saw them bowling and I was like, I want to bowl. Looks like fun. Yeah, all right. Like, anyway, and um, and they're bowling, they're like going over their scores, they're like sitting next to like the little screen or whatever. Like, y'all been to a bowling alley, you know what I'm talking about, and like literally sitting next to each other. I think David has his arm over Keith, and somebody walks up behind them and they're like, Oh, are you together? Like, probably asking about like the lane, because you know when like two lanes connect and they have like a screen, like right, right. And David, with the fucking set of balls on his wet noodle and the little drops of hot sauce, goes, Yeah, we are together. I wish I mean from lowercase to capital.
SPEAKER_03It was a little weird at first because you're in a bowling alley, so I it was it was hard to grasp. I understood why they did it, right? Because the whole point of it was for David to acknowledge that they're together in public, but it was still kind of awkward because who just walks up to you in a bowling alley and says, like, are you guys together? Like, you you gotta ask the guy up front at the computer, he's the one who gives you the lanes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that would have made so much more sense. But I understand why they did that though, right?
SPEAKER_03But I understood the whole point, so I guess all might be forgiven.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and now in these like final two scenes of the show, we learn a lot through Nate's realizations. We learn so anyway. Nate gets home to Brenda's house, and like he's calling for her, and she's like, I'm in the bedroom, and waiting for you, and um, with like porn music on, and so so many fucking candles, like there was literally like a thousand candles lit in that room.
SPEAKER_03Did you notice that that shelf with all the candles? It wasn't there in the last scene with when he was in the bed and saying, like, it wasn't because when he's like he's like come here and she's like sex doesn't solve everything. That shelf was not there. So you're saying she made a whole fucking new shelf to hold all her goddamn candles.
SPEAKER_00Okay, think about the logic of that one though. I mean, not the logic of putting up the shelf because we know that she's off her fucking wrong.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I I'm sure that it was just like a continuity thing. Of course, you know, but they they just needed to have right, but they just needed to have the shelf there so that they could show all the candles in in that scene the way they framed it.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, but if you just put the shelf up before candles on a shelf above a bed was a good idea, and they're planning on doing what they look like they're planning on doing. Wouldn't you think that those candles are then going at all? Bad idea. I mean, like bad idea. It wasn't a shelf with like it was like a narrow shelf, like it didn't have much leeway to like move from yeah, anyway. So, like Lisa pointed out, like they even put up a new shelf from the wad's bedroom scene to hold literally all the candles.
SPEAKER_03Um, and so in that moment, she attempts to seduce him, and he like says something about like, oh, and my mom enjoyed the lavender scrub, and Brenda goes, like she wasn't meant to eat it, but like she makes a joke about it, but like the point is you're literally getting on top of her in the bed, and you bring up your mom, and he's the one who did it, she didn't even say that because I guess it's coming out of her mouth.
SPEAKER_00He brings it up, he's like, By the way, my mom, what like ew, as if like that's going to add to the good vibes going on, like, hey, now you get along with my mom, we can have good sex now, right?
SPEAKER_03And she says something like, I have a fire burning for you, like, yeah, it's like a line from fucking Madonna song. She's like, I'm burning up for your love. I was like, What are you, Madonna? Come on, bitch. Oh, that's the song it's from.
SPEAKER_00It was like burning up from your love, but banana, banana, exactly, yeah, yeah. Okay, thank you for making that connection. Um, and as soon as she says that, like he thinks back to like what she said in the house in the episode before.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he's looking at all the the candles, and it's like flashing to the scenes of the house on fire, yeah, and then flashing back to her saying, like, I do so much more for someone that I love or something like that, or someone that I care about.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so he makes that connection in that instance that maybe it was actually Brenda who set the house on fire for him.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And right at the end of the episode, this is what we were referencing earlier about Ruth having like an arc of you know, like not freaking out about everything that she's saying. Um, she's looking into the chapel and Claire comes home, and Ruth asks if she like she acts really calmly. She was like, Can I ask you something and can you just not get upset about it, or something like that? Or can you can you just be honest with me? Claire's like, Maybe. Yeah, I love her answer. She's like, Maybe. And I thought she was gonna ask about the math to be honest. Yeah, and she was like, Did you bring the house down across the street? And Claire's like, I didn't. She was like, I I really I wouldn't do something like that. She's like, the foot on the other hand, I may have had uh yeah, she's like, I might have stolen a foot though. Yeah, I think Ruth had an idea that it was actually Claire who stole the foot, especially because she was looking for it. She had to know her daughter's whereabouts in that moment. It was like in the middle of the night, she was with Keith.
SPEAKER_03She didn't know that she was with Keith, but they they also made it obvious at the end of that episode, as they're all sitting around talking about Claire being kept out of police records, and I mean, obviously, you know, like what else does she think that police would be on Claire about, you know? So I feel like that was not a far stretch for her. Yeah, and then Claire just goes up the stairs, and and Ruth gives her a little smirk, like okay. I mean, like, she she kind of caught the joke, you know, and she didn't freak out, yeah, and that was it.
SPEAKER_00And I was just like, okay, look at Ruth go. Yeah, I feel like we saw so much development in this episode, which is great.
SPEAKER_03I mean, not just for David, but for Ruth too, and I didn't see that coming.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and even Nate with his relationship with Claire, and Nate definitely with his um realization of connecting events in relation to the house burning. I'm starting okay.
SPEAKER_03Before, when you asked me about the tattoo, and I kind of thought it could have been um, like I said, like a kid or a husband or something like that. Now, learning a little bit more about Brenda, I'm starting to wonder if it's not actually Nathaniel Fisher. And don't say anything, like Nate Fisher and Nathaniel Fisher.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah, like like that Nate, like the one that she so you're saying we're led to believe as viewers watching this for the first time, that the name Nathaniel on her is supposed to be for like she might just be that batshit crazy too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But you're saying that to go that it actually isn't. What? But you're saying that you think it's actually not like for RNA.
SPEAKER_03No, no, no. I'm saying that at first when we first learned about the tattoo, I didn't think it was for him. Oh, okay. And but now I'm saying I don't rule that out because she's she's psycho and she's so detached from everything, like she really just doesn't take anything serious, and and that also is what could lead me to believe that she would do some stupid shit like that because she really just doesn't put a lot of emotion into what she does, it seems it's like everything's one big joke for her, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Right, like for her to do that just to see what reaction Nate was exactly, yeah, just to like get off on his reaction. I get what you mean.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I I could see it as being plausible. I'm not saying that that's necessarily what it is because I have no idea, but but I could see that as a plausible storyline, and so could I, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I mean, like if I was watching the show for the first time, I could see that too. Like it seems like the story is being written in that direction, like as the episodes go on, like as Brenda's character is developing and we're learning more about her and like the way her character is written, you're led to think that she is that way because she's acting this way and she's she's reacting in this way, and the things that she comes up with and does like all lead her towards like what the fuck? Yeah. I mean, they tried to paint her as super alternative too, with like the like her job and like her lifestyle. So I think like they're trying, like the directors are just trying to get us to think that she's just like floozy or like flaky and flaky, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And as you know, in that scene where he's looking at the candles, I think we're supposed to understand that he's starting to suspect her, but he looks so dumbfounded, it was almost like he never saw fire before. Yeah, he's just looking at it like what?
SPEAKER_00Like, I don't do you think she did all that specifically to be like trying to get him to think the candles trying to elicit his thought, yeah. I don't I didn't think that when watching all of those is like a sign, it's like yeah.
SPEAKER_03I just I mean I I took it to mean her trying to be romantic, be romantic, right? But yeah, that's it.
SPEAKER_00Like face value. So like Chandler's proposal to Monica, like that. Other way around, but yes. Yeah, you're right. Oops, okay.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, I don't know, but like, but just just like a romantic thing. Oh yeah, because he like just setting out of the blue. He was like, just marry me. Just like what? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, they went through that whole thing. Of him trying to deflect and then she was gonna leave because you know Richard came back into the picture, and then yeah, okay, anyway. She started crying, she's like, There's a reason why women can't do this, and then he did it.
SPEAKER_00But anyway. So now, do you have any comments about David? I asked you this earlier, and you said you have like so much on him. Um, what's something really important that you wrote down about David?
SPEAKER_03Okay, at the the first time that I watched, I was convinced that it's David's fucking ignorance and racism with the whole thing with the Mexican funeral and and Rico. And I'm still not convinced that he's not, but I'm also kind of wondering if he could it be possible that he's using that more so as an excuse because he's a fucking punk and he's scared.
SPEAKER_00So you're saying that David is using his ignorance as a cop out for his his fear, yes. So he because he doesn't capitalizing on the fact that he's a white person and he can be ignorant, something like that, at least at least in terms of his conversation between himself and Rico.
SPEAKER_03He doesn't fear Rico, he can say whatever he wants, he's his boss, right? So there's no like repercussions for Rico, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Or repercussions for David, I mean right, right, right. Because the whole theme was Paco boosting David up and and showing him how to be tougher and how to be a man, you know, because Paco is like, I live my life, you know, every day like this. I say what I want, I do what I want. And he's like, Yeah, but look at what it got you. He's like, but I wasn't a bitch, you know. Yeah, but I was a man for 20 years, yeah. But right. And so is is there any is that the reason that he's having all these conversations with Paco? Because I mean, who's tougher than a gangbanger, right? That just got shot. I mean, sad in that sense that he got shot, but and he's young, but he's young and he wasn't scared. Look, look at what he look at the life that he lived. He wasn't scared, he saw a lot of shit. And so now this is the kid that's giving David advice on how to be tougher and how to live better, be more active, yeah. Like he's the one who's telling him, go apologize to Keith and don't be a bitch and make him see the fear, and you know, like don't back down.
SPEAKER_00I have two comments. So David looks at Paco as like his like the extreme, and so he's portraying his internal conflicts to the extreme through Paco, who's telling him, and for some reason he's just following the extreme. Also, I was going to make a comment about how we were talking earlier about how ignorant people don't know they're ignorant. What would you call David then? Because you're saying that, and I I see your perspective on this, but from what you said, you said that David is using his ignorance that he knows he has to benefit himself in that situation with Rico.
SPEAKER_03Well, he he definitely did that, right? Whether he did that on purpose because he knew he could get get away with it, or whether he did that because he truly believed it and didn't understand that that would be offensive is debatable. I'm not sure. I don't know how to accept that part. So I don't know. It's almost as if you're saying, like because later on they acknowledge David and Nate acknowledge, and they're like that, like we're so fucking white, we can't like we'll ruin it. We can't do this, yeah. So they acknowledge that there's a a a cultural difference, but did they really believe that Rico was Mexican? Did they really did he really believe that? Did he really ask him because he didn't know or because he thought that Rico had people in a gang? I don't know. Like, is he willfully ignorant or just playing it so that he'll he'll do what he wants?
SPEAKER_00I think the latter, like I I really believe that now, like it it makes sense now, just like playing my scene over in my head.
SPEAKER_03So and and I and I'll give them that that there's definitely a cultural difference, but that doesn't they came to you, they they knew you were white. I mean, that doesn't necessarily mean that you can't fulfill their needs, especially when they're human beings, you just ask them and they'll tell you what they want, you know.
SPEAKER_00I mean, Nate was right there too. It seems like Nate, for the most part, fights a lot of David's battles. And so I was surprised David didn't just say, like, why don't you deal with them? Like, you're you lived in Seattle for so long, and you're you you worked in um like hospitality, right? So, like, I mean, like I would I yeah, like if you're working with people in like a co-op or in any type of situation like that, I just consider that hospitality, like yeah, or customer service. Like, you're used to talking to people from all different backgrounds. Why don't you take care of this one?
SPEAKER_03Right, and then like our only hope is Rico, but is it because he's not white, or is it because you guys are looking for an excuse to excuse yourselves?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, probably like both. That was a good observation, and thank you for like noting that too. Because if you didn't say it, I feel like I wouldn't have made that connection.
SPEAKER_03And while we had Dead Papo the whole episode, we didn't have any scenes with Nate Sr.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he was one of the first episode he wasn't featured in.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he was yeah, they mentioned him, right?
SPEAKER_00But but he didn't he didn't show up. Yeah, wow, that is um yeah. We also didn't see Gabe at all too, but he's like a supporting character, he's not a main character, and I guess we could also say that Nate Sr. is a supporting character too.
SPEAKER_03Okay, yeah, that makes sense, yeah. But yeah, that was that was really it. Um, it's just that it's obviously it was easier to say that as to David as a whole because you know, at the end by the end of the episode he finds his his voice a little bit more, but it's it's taken him a while, so I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh do you have anything else to add while we're wrapping up? No, okay.
SPEAKER_03Then oh, what's the next the title of the next episode? It's called an open book. Okay, that'll do it for this episode. Yeah, the next episode is an open book. That sounds interesting. Do you have like any interpretation of that title? No, I have no fucking clue. I I'm not even gonna attempt to guess because it could be anything.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, an open book usually means like somebody like just being like open about what they do, right? So if that's referencing somebody, right? Like you usually call somebody an open book. It sounds like the focus is gonna be on a main character. I really don't remember this episode either. I don't remember the titles in the episodes. Do you think that the whole episode is gonna be focused around one person? Probably not. None of them have been, but I don't know. Okay, because I was gonna say, if you think maybe that's what the title of the episode is referencing, who do you think it's gonna be focused on? It it could be any of them.
SPEAKER_03I guess if I had to pick one, I would pick me. Okay, just because Brenda's always fucking trying to dig into his brain. He called her out on it in this episode too. Yeah, at one point, yeah.
SPEAKER_00He's like, maybe life would be more enjoyable if you weren't picking it apart. Yeah, she's like he he's like her favorite fucking science experiment, so but yeah, so if there was like an upcoming episode based around one person, oh my god, what are you trying to get at? No, nothing. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I want to know who your favorite character is so far. That's what I'm saying. I don't know. Um I'm liking who Ruth is becoming, yeah, I'll say that. I'm still looking forward to seeing or or hopefully seeing the change in David, but I do like where Ruth where it where her character is going, so yeah, and and I feel like the more episodes that pass, Brenda becomes more interesting, but she's also way more annoying. Oh, for sure, for sure.
SPEAKER_00Okay, yeah, just me. No, no, I'm seeing it too. Like, I feel like she was tolerable in episodes one and two, and now I'm just like they're fucking bullshit again. Like, why is she fucking up? Like, what was it only because they just like had that quick fuck in the airport, and that's how like she got attached to Nate? Like, or does she just like always choose a victim and then fuck up their family? Who knows? Well, anyway, at this point in the episode, we we don't even have to be talking about like finding a way home. Like, if you're if you're driving, because you're not driving, somebody's driving you to the hospital at this point. You're drunk, you're drunk, you're gonna be stomach pumped. But you know, you guys, you know what I mean. Like, definitely don't drink and drive if you have been drinking, you're yeah, just drink responsibly and come visit us.

Yeah, tell everybody and just listen, just keep listening and email us and find us on social media and tell us what you like, tell us what you don't like, just tell us.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, this is a show that I've learned from mentioning to like people in like my circle that um that I'm watching this show again because I'm like talking about it on a podcast. This is something that I've learned that either people watched everybody and they loved it, or they've heard about it because their parents watched it, or they heard about it because their friends watched it and they always wanted to, but they never like had like a real reason to sit down and start. And so it can't just be like my circle, you know. So it's definitely like this is a show that is so iconic for just remember, so oh yeah, yeah, no, and just remember, even if you're watching it for the first time, like I am.
SPEAKER_03Uh, we seriously do our absolute best to be spoiler-free. So I'm trying, yeah. I mean, I can't really spoil anything for you, but I know Britney is trying, and you know, like, so don't worry, we're not we're not gonna fuck it up for you because yeah, no, we haven't just the worst.
SPEAKER_00Even in last season, I mean, like, I'm gonna be completely honest, I really didn't listen to the boss one too much, so I don't know if you had like spoiler alerts, but like when it came to our season for season two, and and even we have never said the phrase spoiler alert at all no, there was only there was only one time where it really wasn't even a spoiler, it was kind of like a trivia or something, I think.
SPEAKER_03And it was like a minor spoiler, but it wasn't. I can't remember what it was now.
SPEAKER_00Okay, because I was like, I don't think it was for clickbait.
SPEAKER_03No, no, no, it was when when me and Agnes were doing Lost. It was like something like, Oh, this is this is the last flashback of so and so. Oh, so we kind of like reference somebody dying that hasn't died yet, except it wasn't. Because oh, how far did you get in Lost?
SPEAKER_00I I'm not finishing it. I already Googled how I ended as fun. It was so complicated anyway.
SPEAKER_03It was very complicated, yeah, because after season three, like at the the very end of season three, the last the I can't, oh my god, you should have watched that episode. It was a like one of the best episodes of the whole show. But you know, every episode they focus in on one character and you see like their flashbacks. Okay, so I said it's kind of like a spoiler, I don't remember which character it was, but I was like, this is the the last flashback that we're gonna get of so-and-so. So it hints that the person dies. Yeah, yeah, that's what I just said, right? But no, because come the end of season three, going forward, there's no more flashbacks. Now they're flash forwards and flash sideways.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes, yeah, yeah. Flash sideways, you mean like parallel lives? Yes, oh that's trippy. That's cool. Yeah, yeah. I know like flash forwards are interesting. I know like the the the bald older man, I forgot his name. John Locke, that's Agnes' favorite. What's it? Yeah, so like oh John Locke, yeah, yeah. I know he has a major, major storyline towards the end of the show, and I don't think the island comes back, right?
SPEAKER_03And so what happens, like in the end, uh I mean, we talked about this on on our show. So even if you listen to that, I mean, obviously, this is spoilers if you didn't, but I mean I mean we're talking about so we're focused on six feet under, we can talk about whatever and we're talking about stuff that we've already talked about on Tassin Sips, so like cool. So, but at the end, the season finale of season three, you go into it and you're seeing the alternate scenes, and you just assume that they're flashbacks, right? Because you see Jack and he's like meeting someone, he's at the hospital, he's doing this, he's doing that, whatever. At the very end, he keeps calling someone at the very end of the episode. You see who he's calling because they meet at the airport, and it's Kate. And at that moment or a flash sideways, that was a flash forward, and so at that moment, your fucking mind is blown because wait a minute, you're like, wait a minute, did they know each other before? What the fuck? And then they say one of the most iconic lines of the whole show, and Jack is like, Kate, we have to go back, and in that moment, goosebumps. I got yeah, I literally have goosebumps. Oh my god, that's what I'm saying. It's it's such an amazing fucking plot twist that you never saw it coming, and so then the the question becomes okay, are the island scenes the flashbacks then?
SPEAKER_00So you're having flashbacks in flashbacks for season one and two, meaning like is real time off the island and are the island scenes the flashbacks, but so if people like during season one and season two, when we're learning about each character, especially in season one when we're having those character flashbacks are actually flashbacks of flashbacks, no, or flashbacks in flashbacks, no, okay. So I'm misunderstanding. This is why I didn't like the show. I mean, I like it because it's so like crazy, but it's so much to keep up with. It's a lot, yeah.
SPEAKER_03No, just just that now really all it is is the flash forward. So assuming that the island is real time, you're seeing some point in the future, you're seeing them off the island. How the fuck did they get off the island?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, they didn't know where they were, right? And so the island on a crash, so how can you fly there? I mean, there's no I mean, yes, planes can land in the water, there are water planes like that, but like how'd they get back?
SPEAKER_03Right. And so then then that becomes you know, up until that point, it was we gotta find a way off the island, we gotta find a way off the island, you know. At the end of season three, you learn that not only do they find a way off the island, but now Jack is like, no, we gotta go back to the island, but you don't know how they got off the island, yeah. Yeah, you find out yeah, you find out how they got off, you find out how they get back, you this this a whole time um what what is the the phrase like a time space continuum shit? It gets a little trippy in season five, but does time work differently on the island?
SPEAKER_00Yes, okay, okay, almost as if like they're on another planet and like days are longer slash shorter, something like that, okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so it's such a great show though. Um but it is a lot, I I I admit that it is a lot.
SPEAKER_00It's like a summer vacation type show, like so. That's why you can like invest your mind in that, not get distracted. Or like I feel like when it was on the air, it was a little bit different because you were forced only to have access to one episode a week, yeah. And to have breaks to think and talk about it, right?
SPEAKER_03And and you talk to everybody and anybody who did, so yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I remember my parents watch laws, but anyway, to wrap things up, um, Lisa already covered everywhere you can go to support us. We would yeah greatly appreciate it. Um, by now you should be at the hospital, and so just thank the nurses for doing their job, please. And yeah, we'll see you guys in episode five.
SPEAKER_02Yes, we'll meet you back here next week. Until then, I'm Lisa. I'm Brittany, and we are out of here.
SPEAKER_00Remember, guys, hydrate.
