SPEAKER_01

Hi, and welcome to Sass and Sips, the watch rewatch podcast where we drink and we sip and we sass. I'm one of your hosts, I'm Lisa.

SPEAKER_00

I'm your other host, I'm Brittany.

SPEAKER_01

And welcome to season two, episode one, in the game. What are you drinking tonight, Brittany?

SPEAKER_00

I'm drinking my shitty Trader Joe's wine still. Don't make my way through the bottle from last season.

SPEAKER_01

Alright. I am drinking some iced coffee that I made earlier today and forgot about it, so I had no choice but to ice it. And I threw in some peanut butter whiskey that somebody left at my house.

SPEAKER_00

Wow. I was gonna say, I hope you throw in like some bailies or like something, right?

SPEAKER_01

Peanut butter whiskey. It's okay. It's a little strange, but it's okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I remember seeing that at like your like kickback that you had at your house.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, it was it was still here because nobody drinks it.

SPEAKER_00

Honestly, I'd see peanut butter whiskey and I'd be like, that is a bad decision for a bad decision night.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I was really excited to taste it, but then I was like, yeah, I'd rather just eat peanut butter.

SPEAKER_00

Yep. Just I keep thinking about like taking a spoonful of peanut butter and mixing it in like some brown liquor, and I'm like, that is not who came up with that idea, but I hope it smells good.

SPEAKER_01

I mean it smells okay. This smells like peanut butter and whiskey, but like whiskey. But have fun with that. Have fun with your old wine.

SPEAKER_00

Thank you. You know what they say.

SPEAKER_01

What?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, like wine ages. As it ages, it gets better. But with the shitty trader Joe's one, it's not yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I also think that that's like in the barrel.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, not in the almost plastic bottle. It's okay. It might as well be in a box and a bag.

SPEAKER_01

You know what? I'm not even knocking the box wine because when you're on a budget, it's it's actually pretty good.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm on limited sleep, it's a work night, and um I'm trying to just drink something that's just gonna do the job. No headache anymore.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you go. So, as um, I just want to mention for those of you who may not know, we also do record a pre-show that's available right now on Patreon. And in the Patreon, we just kind of do a little catch up of things that's going on in our lives, like behind the scenes stuff that we don't want to quote unquote bore you with on the regular show if all you came to talk about was six feet under. But Brittany has a new addition to her family. I do, and my kids encountered a crackhead and um the disappearing crackhead. Um but both of those full stories are on the pre-show. And I also talked about a new podcast adventure that I'm hoping to be taking soon. But yeah, so that that's about it for like housekeeping, right? And then at the end of this episode, we're gonna talk about our do good mission.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's our new adventure on this podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, yes, yes, yes. So stick around for that before you go. And let's get into season two.

SPEAKER_00

Let's do it.

SPEAKER_01

All right, I am back to writing my own synopsis. So just stop me when you're so funny. I get the giggles. Okay, I'm good.

SPEAKER_00

It's really not shit, I guess.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so this episode is the first episode of season two. It's called In the Game, and it originally aired 3-3, 2002. The episode opens on a movie scene centering on a young actress, aka Ross's underage girlfriend, aka Bruce Willis's daughter from Friends. We see fragments of her snorting that knows Canti. Okay, hold on. Did you break the sleeve up? I did, but I skipped the line.

SPEAKER_00

Oh good.

SPEAKER_01

We soon find out that it's a movie and that she's actually in the audience watching it. Looks like maybe a premiere. Afterwards, we see fragments of her snorting that knows Candy, interspersed with her movements at the party, until she ODs and dies on the bathroom floor. And we see Rebecca Leah Milford, 1980 to 2001.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, 21 years old, seizes on the floor due to drugs. Horrible.

SPEAKER_01

Did you feel like that opening scene was longer than they usually are?

SPEAKER_00

Honestly, yeah. And then I remember the first time thinking that, like the first time I watched her thinking that, and then thinking like, oh, maybe it's maybe you know this character has more of an impact. Like kind of kind of like in last season, um, Marcus's impact that held over like two episodes, like the two episodes of the season. So I don't know. I I definitely do agree. It was lengthy, but it was really interesting. Like you, you so you saw her lack of confidence in the beginning, and then that just drove her drug use that night of the premiere. It was really bad. I felt really bad. Yeah, I know, but wouldn't be the show without a death, so somebody gotta die. I think I also felt bad because right after the title credit um of Becky, yeah, we we find that are you good?

SPEAKER_01

I was just thinking about the the transition to her convulsing on the bathroom floor and dying to the next scene, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I was actually I wasn't gonna say just exactly that, but I was gonna say that um we see like David and we see Nate and they're talking to like two of her like co-stars.

SPEAKER_01

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. No, after the title card is Nate and Brenda.

SPEAKER_00

Well, that's what I meant. Like I was skipping that part for now because I figured we would just Nate Brenda. Yeah, that's why I was like, I don't know why you're laughing. Like, I'm talking about like her friends, like that's why I was laughing. Yeah, no, no, no, no. Um because I kind of I kind of I wasn't gonna talk about that yet.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, because I kind of wrote my notes in order this time.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I'm sorry. So no, no, it's fine. What do you want to talk about? I was gonna say something quick and we could go back to it. Um, I was gonna say, like, the next scene that we hear um anybody talking about Becky, opposite of funny, um, her her co-host or like her actor friends, I think it was more like her actor friend, that guy that she was talking to at the party. Um, it's like I think it was his boyfriend. Well her boyfriend. I think they were just like hooking up. But like that's the vibe. And um they were trying to like plan her funeral, and they said that like her parents passed away when like she was young, and she was raised by like her grandmother, who then passed away.

SPEAKER_01

She passed away too.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so like she didn't have any family, and so she was like 20 literally a fucking kid, 21 years old, like in Hollywood, like trying to do something with her life, and she was about to just make it big. Like her agent kind of like mentioned that she was like, Stop doing nude shit, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Stop showing you tits, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And like we can like get you out there, and the kid OD. Yeah, it was it was just kind of sad. And then every time they showed her after that, tits out, so yeah, that was kind of like um like a callback to that like um sex worker.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, that's true. So it's in season one. I just thought it was funny because the agent specif specifically mentions to shops to stop showing her tits. The peanut butter whiskey, and then yeah, and then and then every single time you see her after that, she's naked.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, very odd. So I didn't really notice that until you just said it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But let's go back to talk about Nate and Brenda, like you were talking about. That's literally what happens chronologically after the title card.

SPEAKER_01

Tell us what happens, Lisa. So after the title card, the episode opens on Nate and Brenda in bed. Nate is pumping away, but Brenda says it's not working and it's not gonna happen, which also might be a good metaphor for their relationship. Brenda is apparently still depressed about having to commit Billy, but doesn't want to talk about it, so bye Felicia. That's it. Like, there's there's more, but that's it. There's like not much more. I mean, basically, Nate. The only other thing that might be worth anything is that Nate tells her, but even if you're depressed, you still sometimes doing stuff helps. But like, that's it. Um Nate sees a doc. This is a little out of order, but just with Nate. He sees a doctor and he's talking about his recent ABM diagnosis, and the doctor would be better suited as a used car salesman because he's like slimy as shit. It's true. He basically taunts him. He's like, I drink, I smoke, and I would have lived to 90 if it hadn't been for the bus.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so Lisa, you just cut out on your recording. So um Lisa's talking about Nate Senior, and so Nate has this flashback of Nate Senior, or not flashback, like hallucination, like he's there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But he's he's just like taunting Nate. Um, back at Brenda's, she's busy, she's trying to keep busy by drinking, smoking, reading, and what looks to be arbitrarily throwing away belongings. I don't know what she's doing.

SPEAKER_00

Who knows anymore?

SPEAKER_01

Um, Nate decides to take matters into his own hand, and he starts popping aspirin every day for its blood thinning effects. Now, I'm no doctor, I don't even play one on TV, but I feel like this is not gonna be a good idea.

SPEAKER_00

Fun fact, friends. Um when you are on blood thinners, or just like Nate, if you take an aspirin every day, because some people have to do that, they have to chew aspirin every day. Be careful how much cinnamon you intake, uh, whether that's directly like adding it or indirectly, like it's already an ingredient to something, because cinnamon's a natural blood thinner. So, yeah, that's actually something that like doctors will warn you about, but not all doctors will warn you about.

SPEAKER_02

I didn't even know that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, happened with my grandpa.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah. Um, and apparently there are not enough headaches in the Fisher house to warrant a new aspirin bottle. So Nate inadvertently ends up taking the ecstasy pill that David stashed there last season, and hijinks ensue, but we'll get to that later.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, forget about thinning your blood, honestly.

SPEAKER_01

In the meantime, uninterested boyfriend are there in charge of planning the funeral, and they're like a train wreck, not because they're sad, but just because they're a train wreck. Eventually they decide on cremation and necklaces because fuck dolphins, and those are Becky Becky's words. David is interrupted by his phone as him and Rico are doing the intake, and it's a fireman whose ad David answers. Later, they'll have a date. Then we see Claire at the beach with Gabe, and she seems to be annoyed by his shit, but not an but not annoyed enough to break up with him. In fact, later she'll invite him to family dinner. Because fuck Claire. Jesus Christ, make a better decision. Um, David, what?

SPEAKER_00

I said, mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

I can't hear.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, there's something going on with like the internet, because you keep cutting out so I can only hear some parts. And I'm sure I'm coming.

SPEAKER_01

Um, all right, let's just hopefully it still records because of the whatever, but um David also sees a doctor and it's to determine his sexual health. He's good on everything except gonorrhea. Considering the shit that we've seen him do, I think he got off pretty lucky.

SPEAKER_00

Especially after being in Vegas, unprotected in Vegas. That's easy.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, exactly. Good thing he's gonna see a fireman so he could go put out the fire in his crotch. Ruth is at her table reading now that you know, so she can be even more awkward because apparently she wasn't awkward enough. Maybe she should have just asked Claire because Claire was like, I don't care as long as he's happy. And Ruth is like, but are you angry? Are you this? Are you that? It's like no, that's just you, apparently. So while that's going on, David meets up with the fireman and the red cap for coffee. It's a good first step, except that he's not exactly being true to himself. You know, like the the guy is telling him all this stuff about oh, he likes sex, but he can't do casual sex, and David is just like, yeah, me too. No, motherfucker, you got gonorrhea by fucking prostitutes in a parking lot in Vegas. Uh-huh. But maybe that's why they didn't feel a spark because it's just David, David still has a little bit more work to do for himself.

SPEAKER_00

At the same time, um, Mr. Fireman had said that he openly came out to his parents like many, many years ago, and they were fully accepting him, and he lives life as like with his identity on his arm, like he he doesn't have any fears. Whereas David is the complete opposite. David had just come out at the end of last season, and I'm gonna guess that the time gap that's supposed to be happening between last season and this season is not long at all.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I know I was trying to figure that out, and I I couldn't figure it out. Maybe a week because there was like obviously because Brenda's still depressed, so it can't be that long. Definitely not Gabe. Um, what do you call it? Um, like David had the fallout with church. Nate still hasn't told Brenda about the ABM, and Claire is still with Gabe, who hasn't been arrested yet. That's what I'm saying. So it's gotta be like maybe three days to a week max. Right, like it I feel like it just can't be that long, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um but yeah, that's the thing. So David like is just getting used to like being open with his identity, he's barely accepting himself still. I mean, like episode 12, he was praying on the floor, and episode 13, he was like basically telling him out at church, yeah. So like it's it's a lot that he's adjusting to, and so he can't be his open self. And so I I honestly like I could relate to David in the situation, not on the front of like coming out and everything, but like being not true to yourself because you're kind of not really sure who you are.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, he just he just still has a little bit more work to do, I think, to get comfortable in his own skin. But um, I mean, he's already accepted the fact that he's gay and that it's okay, but I think he still has more work to do to accept and to acknowledge that his sexual preference preference, like more than just being with a man, like what he likes to do with said man is also okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I feel like David, and this may be a little bit deep and going back to like his childhood, how he was raised. I feel like David gets the physical part of it, like like being attracted to the same sex, but like he doesn't understand the emotional part of a relationship.

SPEAKER_01

Right, right. Because I think with the exception of Keith, it doesn't seem like he's had a lot of mutual, um, like like a reciprocal relationship.

SPEAKER_00

And honestly, like their relationship seemed more like dependent, where like David was being totally dependent on Keith for a lot.

SPEAKER_01

Well, yeah, because David wasn't comfortable in his own shoes, he wasn't in, you know, he was still in the closet, and I feel like that's such an outdated term, but okay, sorry if I offended anyone. But you know, David just wasn't out yet, you know, and and so I think that that put a huge limitation on their relationship, and I and that actually comes back a little bit later. But um, okay, let's let's just move on. Um, because we'll we'll get into all of that later. So Ruth announces he hasn't invited Gabe, they um Nate to invite Brenda, and for David to invite his special friend. And David calls her out on that shit. But she he says that he's not with anyone, and she asks about the cop, the black man. Oh, Ruth. Um hurts, honestly. Yeah, yeah. So later we see David out with Keith and obviously Eddie. So I wrote maybe it's been so long that I was remembering a different actor because I really thought Eddie was a white guy. Really? But I guess, yeah, but I guess I was thinking of a different character. So in the last episode, remember when I was like, oh, who's the guy that was with Keith? It was Eddie. Yeah. Yeah, I I don't know what I was thinking, but yeah, that's we we knew that from the vigil. I know, but remember I don't know. I thought I I think I just had like a brain fart when I was remembering.

SPEAKER_00

I remember you saying that, and I remember thinking to myself, like, maybe I'm remembering it wrong because I remember a lot of things wrong.

SPEAKER_01

So because I knew that he saw Eddie at the vigil because Keith mentioned it, and then I and I read it. Like after I was doing notes and stuff, I read it. So I think that going back, I just remembered in my head the wrong person. And so then at the end of the episode, when we saw Keith with a person, I didn't know who it was, but apparently it was Eddie, so I was wrong. I made a mistake. Um, but anyway, David is out with them. They're they're like at lunch or whatever, and David is telling them about how he shook up the congregation, but that now he attends the cool cur the cool church. Oh my goodness, I cannot speak.

SPEAKER_00

That's the peanut butter on the roofima.

SPEAKER_01

And he's back at the cool church. Um, we see Brenda with the Shiatsu client, and she kicks him out mid-massage because fuck you, and I don't need your money.

SPEAKER_00

Well, he was being an ass.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he was like, I don't let people treat me this way, and she's like, get the fuck out before I tell the times about your light bow scars.

SPEAKER_00

Uh-huh. And then he used the best fucking phrase that everybody loves to use. He's such a fucking bitch.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well, of course, every woman is a bitch when a man doesn't get what he wants from her. How many, how many times do you go from hey, hey, beautiful, hey, can I talk to you too from a minute for a minute? Uh, to you fucking bitch in five seconds because you didn't pay him attention? Yeah. Welcome to womanhood. So Nate takes another aspirin because it's another day. And why is he fucking chewing an aspirin like it's a skittle?

SPEAKER_00

Aren't you only supposed to chew aspirin when you have like a heart attack? Heart attack symptoms. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like what I thought.

SPEAKER_00

Like heart palpitations, like something like that.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know, but I feel like every time you see somebody take a pill on TV without water, they chew it like it's Skittles. And we does that? Ew. Chewing it like a Flintstone vitamin. No, thank you. Claire's downstairs in the what do we call it, a mortuary? I would, I would call it. The laboratory?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I guess like the lab.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know, but they're there. And she's showing yeah, she's showing um Gabe around while they're waiting for dinner. Then they're upstairs and Nikolai is making some awkward small talk with Claire, David, and Gabe. And he mentions that he had a son. Am I missing something here? Um because why did he he said he he would have been your age. But so did I miss something that happened with Nikolai's son? And why did nobody ask him?

SPEAKER_00

I just don't think we got there yet.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Um, and I promise you later that the hijinks wouldn't sue. Well, here they come. Nate is a sweaty mess, he has cotton mouth. Nikolai says an elaborate grace, and Nate fucking loves it. Auntie loves Nikolai, who was apparently so beautiful and has light coming out of him. Everyone at the table is like simultaneously entertained and horrified because they realize that he's on drugs. Um, anyway, afterwards, Nikolai thinks dinner went great because Nate looks happy, and Ruth thinks that she needs a support group, and Nate, you could see him in the next room, and he looks like it could only be called high yoga because I don't know what the fuck he was doing. Um, Claire and Gabe are going to the movie with the hot dead girl, and Nate announces that he taught David how to masturbate. Then does Brenda is like, that's fascinating. Call me next week. He eventually passes out and he dreams that he hears noise and laughing, and finds Senior with the Grim Reaper and Life, that's her name, playing Chinese checkers for money. Death tells him he's either in the game or not. So they bet everything. Senior warns him not to get death mad, and then life begins to fuck death like literally in the scene, and it's apparently a big cosmic mystery. I don't I started to think I could unwrap that, and then I was like, I cannot. Yeah. Um David the next day calls Keith, wakes him up, and basically he was just talking to him about how oh, it's so good that we can remain friends, and if you ever want to hang out, and Keith is like, Stop right there because it's BS. I'm with somebody and you know it. And now David's butthurt, but not in a good way. So he does the next best thing and he has to talk with Ruth about it. But he does something pretty impressive here because he's like, Where's Nikolai? You know, Ruth is like, oh, he went home. And David's like, you know, he could stay if you want. And Ruth is like, I know, I don't need your permission. But David is like, neither do I. I think Ruth didn't see that one coming. Um anyway, at Becky's funeral, Gabe is super insensitive. Shocker. Nate confronts David about the E, but then also wants more. And the funeral attendees snort her ashes, but not before her weird boyfriend, somebody, sings a more weird and very terrible song. That was like American Idol, terrible.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, everything was just weird.

SPEAKER_01

They're like so self self-absorbed and just out of touch, all those actors. Or putting it, you know. Um Gabe is back downstairs and he yells to Claire that he's not her pet. But like, fuck you, because you love when she's feeding you and taking care of you, but then all of a sudden, when she checks on you, you don't like it. Fuck you, go away. Rico confronts his sister-in-law about getting paid because they still the funeral was supposed to be paid for by basically by the cast of the movie because they were the only family that she had. But the boyfriend person is the only one who signed because they they still needed someone to sign. Um, and she tells him she already paid her share that talk to him, and Rico's mad because he's like, How's this gonna look? Like you're my sister-in-law, and then she tells him about how she just gave Vanessa $500 to buy diapers, and Rico is pissed. Yeah, she's like, You heard me. Um later at the beach, Nate is telling Brenda about his big comic cosmic mystery dream quote, because it was a quote at the end, but she's familiar with it because it's actually from the Bagab. I I why can't I say this? Baha Vagad Gita? Bah Vagad. Oh my god, I'm so sorry to anyone who knows what this is called and is yelling at me. Bah Gavad Gita. I don't know if I did it right, but um and so it's actually just recycled crap from Nate's drug addled brain. While they're there, David calls to tell Nate that he passed the funeral director's test, so that's good. And Nate apparently has forgotten that he took it, so it that's another thing that makes me think like, well, damn, how long could it have been if he forgot that he took the test? So I don't know. Um Brenda leaves because she has a client, and then we see Nate walking into the ocean, or so he dreams because it was just a dream or vision, however you want to call it. And then we see Senior sitting next to him telling him that he's in the game now, whether he likes it or not. And that's how the episode ends. Yeah. So you have any thoughts on the in the game scene?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, um, I mean, that's a call to our first scene of this episode with our friend Becky and like just her trying to be in the game, the acting game, the Hollywood game, and also trying to keep up with the people around her, and like, you know, I mean, like, that's the reality of it. Like the majority of like people in Hollywood do drugs, and if they don't currently do them, they did them. And so she was trying to keep up, she was trying to be in the game, and Nick being in the game, not Nick, I'm I'm so sorry. Nate being in the game, who's Nick? Um, I don't know. I don't know either. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

I think he's he's over in clickbait.

SPEAKER_00

Fuck yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Go all back.

SPEAKER_00

Um, yeah, Nate being in the game, Nate Singer telling him that is just like chilling. And I mean the the game of death is just that that's a really interesting way to put like you were slowly dying, like you're in the game.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's that I didn't I didn't get the connection to like the Hollywood game and that first seasons, uh sorry, scenes aspects. But I really was having a hard time unwrapping all of the senior stuff because obviously there's a connection to a literal game, right? When they're playing the Chinese checkers with life and death, but I feel like there's just such a bigger meaning, like as in life and death are a game and they fuck each other. Because it's true, right? Like, how many times has life fucked you over? Yeah, but but I couldn't quite connect it to that last scene where he's like you're in the game now, or is it just simply because of the AVM?

SPEAKER_00

I think it's just because of the AVM. Okay, but what I will say, and I'm not gonna say anything else, is that no, I'm just stating things that like we kind of know in the back of our head. Um, there's gonna be a lot to unpack in this season with Nate Senior. So right now, what he's saying, take it at face value, although we can look deeper into it because there will be a time and place to deep dive into what he's saying.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, and in fairness, it's not actually senior, you know, it's it's Nate. Oh, yes, no, I mean so it's hard, it's hard to be like, oh, Nate, you know, Nate Senior actually knows some he doesn't, it's only what Nate is is envisioning.

SPEAKER_00

That's true, but he would only envision that because he could picture his dad actually saying it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, I I mean I get that part, but I just mean that even if it does come true, so to speak, what we're getting is Nate's wants, fears, visions, all of that wrapped up into Senior's mouth.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So that's all I meant. Like it's not necessarily some foresight, yeah. Maybe what Nate's fear is.

SPEAKER_00

I guess for me it's more hindsight in like seeing how this first episode of this season plays out and you know how the rest of the season plays out.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. So when we first started, you were saying, like, oh, this is the episode. What do you mean?

SPEAKER_00

I kind of meant that. I kind of meant that is like one of the episodes where you know, we take the ribbon off, but we're not unpackaging the present yet. Okay. Okay. Like we're we're starting to closer. Yeah, you're you're getting the knot out of the bow right now.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Yeah, um, I don't really have much else, like in terms of the episode. Do you have anything else?

SPEAKER_00

Honestly, no. Um I just feel like I'm ready for um, I'm ready for better decisions to be made. I'm ready for Nate to make better decisions, bad as health. I'm ready for Brenda to just make a better decision or just a good decision. Um, like period. I'm ready for Flair to make better decisions, and I'm ready to see what happens with Gabe.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. I um I didn't really have a quote this week, but like most of them were just like the Nate stuff with Nikolai.

SPEAKER_00

And I just feel like the Nate stuff with the doctor, where he was like, Yeah, and I'd like a straight answer, asshole. Yeah, actually that was pretty good, but yeah, but no, the Nikolai stuff is great. Like, honestly, truly did not expect that of him, but now I could see it, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. But so I don't I don't really have like a specific part to choose between Gabe and Rico. Yeah. Um, but I think I have to go with Gabe again.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, honestly, I feel like I feel like it's both of them, and like honestly, Claire, like she is she's clearly putting herself in a situation where she knows that like nothing good's gonna come out of it, but she's also like young and in love, and so I guess we all make up. Exactly, and so she's not necessarily a great digger, but we've all been there. She's just being a teenager, finally, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But or an adult, I'm sorry, as she told Ruth, we're all adults here, you said.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah, you're right.

SPEAKER_01

But she's a fucking teenager, so oh wait, wait, wait. You know what line had me also when Ruth when what I said tell us tell us, sorry. Okay, um when Ruth is reading that stupid book, and she asks Claire if Claire had any have has ever had feelings of the same sex, attractive feelings for the same sex, and Claire's like, no, and she's like, Well, it's okay if you did. When I was your age, I had a crush on Jane Fonda, and Claire's like, Well, I hear she's single now, so here's so it might be your chance or something like that. Uh-huh. And Claire's just like, mm-hmm, bye. And Ruth is just like, what? Like, what just happened?

SPEAKER_00

Maybe I'm gay.

SPEAKER_01

I just feel like Ruth is is trying to be a better parent and just fail after fail. Like she just she just doesn't know how to execute. Like she's obviously reading a book because she wants to be better for David, right? Because if you didn't care, you wouldn't bother. But it's still almost the wrong way, right? Because then when she talks to Claire, Claire is just like, I don't care as long as he's happy. And it's just that simple.

SPEAKER_00

But so why can't it just be that simple for Ruth? Because she only sees things in black and white, and she can't just see it as like she can't see anything as like it is what it is. She cannot see things like that. And Claire's like, if he's happy, it is what it is. And it's like, no, but that doesn't like it doesn't make sense out of it. Like, that's like people who don't really like understand like people who are gender fluid. They're like, no, but you're either one or the other. And it's like, no, some people just aren't. Yeah. And it's like a lot of people just feel like they need to categorize things. And honestly, it's funny because I'm teaching my students about this right now. We were talking about oh my god, what was it? Um questioning? We were talking about good skills that readers do. I'm working with fourth grade right now, and one of them was using our schemas to do something. And I had to explain what schemas were, and they're pretty much just life experiences. And Lisa, you know from psychology that schemas are just like ways that we can organize events or situations or even personalities from our real life and then apply it to other things, whether it be in reading a book or in like even trying to understand other people.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

What is it like assim assimilation and um what's the other one? I don't remember my psych degree at all. Honestly, I don't know how I got a psychology degree, and I don't remember it now. And it hasn't been that long.

SPEAKER_01

It's been like what I can't I can't remember what the other one, but but it's it's it's all along those same lines, right? Like where one is where you fit in to the context, and the other one is like where the context fits into you. Uh-huh. And so I can't remember what the other thing is.

SPEAKER_00

I'm just calling it a schema. Yeah, but they're just like it's like if they're just categories of schemas, and I feel like Ruth is really her mind is run by schemas, and she does not understand where to place her son or his his traits and like his interests and his sexuality. She she doesn't understand like how to put that in a box in her mind to then go about and interpret the world, and it it's just so prevalent. Whereas, like, I mean, like, we all have schemas, but like Claire just gave a really good example of like, okay, I put it in the box of like it's something that like happens that I can't be controlling of, like, I have no control over this, and like the whole point is like if you're happy, you can do what you want. If you're sad, then we can help you, and that's it. Right, right. So it's interesting to watch, like you can almost see like the wheels turning behind Ruth's eyes as she's trying to comprehend all this.

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna I'm gonna give you um a mini psychology lesson.

SPEAKER_00

Go ahead.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so it's assimilation and accommodation.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, accommodation, you're right.

SPEAKER_01

So here we go. According to Piaget, the learning process involves the following assimilation, meaning attempting to interpret new information within the framework of existing knowledge, accommodation, making small changes to that knowledge in order to cope with the things that don't fit those existing frameworks. So one is like in internal, the other one is like external. Yeah, and so it's all yeah, it's all that same part of that same model.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and so the assimilation was like her son, like you know, watching her son grow up and like learning his character traits and who he is on the inside. And now the accommodation is, you know, kind of making the change that she saw his life was gonna be. Like, I mean, you and I both know that mothers happen to, and and family members.

SPEAKER_01

I I probably slurred my words in the bottom of my mind because that's like a little bit of a term, but I was like, I don't think that applies to Ruth.

SPEAKER_00

No, not definitely not, like maybe in her mind, but not in her actions. But no, um, I was saying like mothers, but like not just mothers, but like family members put like these expectations on their children to you know lead a certain lifestyle, do certain things with their lives, and like follow the the circle of life, right? Like get a job, get married, have kids, die, you know, so or take care of your mother, die. Well, he's maybe even got a vacation before you die, but yeah, you know, you know, I I mean like in somewhere in there is like pay your taxes and like kiss the feet of the IRS, and you know, so I'm just saying that like now Ruth is going through the accommodation period where she's like, now I need to make changes to what I thought my son would be because he's not, and these changes just like she's just having such difficulty with it, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, we're only I know, and it's and it's so hard for her to understand that he is still the same exact person, he's still your son, he's not a chicken, and the only difference is who he wants to fuck, which really has nothing to do with you, so I don't understand why you're making such a big deal about it.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. But I digress, and we have I mean, unless you have something else to say about the episode, nothing else to say about the episode besides that I can't wait to watch the next with you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'm excited. I don't even know what the next episode is called. I didn't even get that. I forgot to. You know what?

SPEAKER_00

We'll talk about that next episode.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, um, actually, we have an announcement, so I I'll look at the name of the next episode, and you you want to tell everybody about our little um project?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. So in the beginning of this episode, we mentioned that you know, we have something to talk about at the end of this episode, and here we are. So Lisa and I are on a feel good, do good mission. Each episode, we'd like to highlight a local business and charity from a city or town where our listeners that means you are from. Uh, we'd like for you guys to send suggestions on a local business or a local charity from your area that we should talk about. And you know how to get in touch with us. Our information, the description of this episode, our show notes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, everything is there. Yeah, I'm really excited about doing this. I think that it's it's such an opportunity, right? To like use what little platform that we have for something good. Yeah. So I'm excited, and I and I really hope that we hear from you guys. The next episode is called Out Out Brief Candle. I don't know what it's about. I didn't read anything further. You're smiling and laughing, so I feel like you know what's gonna happen. Okay, all right. As soon as I'm done editing this, I'm gonna watch it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I get to re-watch it now.

SPEAKER_01

So this works. But yeah, so stay so stay tuned. Also, hopefully a little later in the season, we'll be able to start publishing some of these recommendations for businesses and charities. Did you say small business? Because like, especially small business.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, no, I said local business, and that definitely means like, you know, like a small business, definitely like you know, like minority run would be so much better because like we need to highlight businesses like that. Women ran needs to be highlighted, even just like family businesses. Like, if you know a family business in your town, like a pharmacy or like even just like a bakery that has been passed down by generations and you've seen the family member run, that's that's something that deserves to be shouted out, and you know, you never know who else is listening. Yeah, to the scene from your area.

SPEAKER_01

And and we'd totally love to like show our appreciation and you know, maybe send them a little bit of like goodies or something. Yeah, you know, aside from mentioning and giving them a shout out, but um, so that's coming soon. That's coming in the next within the next few episodes. Hopefully, we'll have we'll have some some places to highlight. Um, but that's it for this episode. And so until next time, always remember drink responsibly. Please do not drink and drive. As a person whose shoulder was fucked up by a drunk driver, um about seven, almost eight years ago, and I still have a lot of pain. Please don't do that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, not cool. Also, the money that you would have taken to put gas in your car to drive drunk, just save that money and give it to us. Buy us a cup of coffee, a bottle of one, you know. Make smart decisions, but you're fine.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and also um feel free to do that, and we will happily send you some fun Assassin's Sips, change color cups and shot cups, shot glasses. You could do your drinking at home at your buddies. Maybe don't use the shot glasses in the car. No, no, no, not in the car. Unless they're like for not shots, but um, yeah, but assassinsips.com for all your links and stuff. And until next time, I'm Lisa and Britney, and we are out of here.

SPEAKER_00

See you next week, guys.
