SPEAKER_01

Hi, and welcome to this episode of Sass and Sips, the podcast where we watch and we rewatch, and we drink, and we dish and we sip and we sass. I'm I'm Lisa. I'm Brittany.

SPEAKER_00

And that is so adorable. I love our intro.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, sometimes, sometimes. And as you guys know, we've been focusing on Six Feet Under this season. And welcome to episode 9. Life's Too Short. I have my red wine. I'm hoping to numb the pain a little bit. What are you drinking?

SPEAKER_00

I actually I found 19 Crimes again in the liquor stores and over the weekend. And I was like, yeah, I need this. It brings me back to last season.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, yes, yes. Yeah. As soon as things get a little bit calmer, but definitely uh my mom was giving away stuff from her basement. I can't really say more right now. But um one of the things was a screened, like a screened in gazebo. Okay. So I can't wait until like I mean we could probably put it put the fire pit inside and oh my god. And we'll sit outside with like a heat lamp and we'll have our warning or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

No, that sounds really cool.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I hope I mean I don't know, I didn't open it, but um I I just want to preface this episode and say that I had some a lot of dental work done two days ago, and my mouth is still hurting. So if I sound funny, it's probably because I'm like hurting and drooling and you know looking like a mess over here. But yeah. Um this episode. Um oh and check out also check out the pre-show because we go more into depth about the whole social media issue that we've been having. Um it it it looks like a hack, but we we talk about it a lot more there. So if you want to know, head on over. Uh we also talk about what we've been up to in Halloween and whatnot. But um and you know, the always fun topic of school shootings and gun violence. But um aside from that, I think I know on the notes I put a trigger warning this episode. Oh my god, that's like a pun. Oh my god, it is.

SPEAKER_00

Lisa writes in the show notes, she writes trigger warning, gun violence. And as fucked up as it is, that's kind of like a pun.

SPEAKER_01

It it is, it's on par for our show, though. But but dark humor has entered the podcast. Pun aside, there is gun violence. Um, there's talk of emotional rape also. So maybe we might want to throw that out there. So if you guys, anyone out there doesn't feel comfortable, we totally get it. And and we hope that you will come back for the next one if this one isn't for you.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I really want to note um very quick on that emotional rape line. You know, it in the Holocaust community, which I am very much part of because I study that often and for a number of years, um it's said that the word Holocaust is unique to the event of the Holocaust, and you can't just call something a Holocaust. Like, for example, that math test really tore me a new one. It was a Holocaust. Like, you can't you can't use that word to describe something else because it was made for that event. It's so I always can't apply it. Some people some people try to use Holocaust as like an adjective to describe like how terrible something is. And I feel like the same thing goes for rape. Um, I feel like you can't really apply it to different situations, like um like in turn, like that math test was so bad, it raped me, like raped me in the ass, or some shit. Like, that's not that's not a term that you can use to describe something, like that's an event, and that's a horrible, horrible one. And it's specific to that situation. So, usually using it like casually and in slang is not something I condone or agree with, and it's not something I follow in my own life, just like with the word Holocaust. So, just to point that out, um, that and I know that's how you feel about it too, Lisa. Like that's that's a word that we don't think should be used. That's like when people use the word gay, like casually to describe like something that's maybe stupid. Like, that's not how you use that word. It's specifically for one thing, don't put it in slang, it it's it just devalues what it means.

SPEAKER_01

I will say though, in the context of the show and how it was said, these are supposed to be teenagers. Oh, yeah. And I I get what she was going for, but even with that being said, it's it's still a little hard to reconcile because it's like, okay, well, the but the writers are not teenagers, exactly.

SPEAKER_00

That's like like they had them like writers now saying, like having a high school like jock, like just to make a stereotype, say like, oh, like he's being so gay right now, like why you know, like and just to say that, like, oh, high school students, and you know, like not just high school students, but teenagers don't fully understand the point of a word, and they usually they use it like casually, like that's we're we're way beyond that because nobody does that, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so and I I kind of gave it a pass just because I I I saw what they were going for, but I mean it it could have been better done, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I mean there's a difference okay, connecting it really fast to something going on in my classroom right now. Um, according to our curriculum, we had to read the book Stone Fox. They gave us another option, but the other option to me wasn't as good, or it was actually not as good of like a book to make up for. Uh, Stone Fox is a uh like a fictitious novel about this little boy that races in a dog sledding race. So that's why he can win money to save his grandfather's potato farm. And it's set in like the early 1900s in Wyoming, and they're they're out in like, you know, like the rural parts of Wyoming, and there's this one dog sled man that like uh dog sledder that he goes around to different towns and he always wins, but he's winning, so that's why he can win the prize money to buy back the land that he's entitled to because he's a Native American. And so he's trying to buy back the land of his ancestors, right? Throughout the whole book, they call him an Indian, which is not right. Um, and they paid him out to be like the villain in the book because the main character, like who's a 10-year-old boy, like he's trying to save his grandfather's potato farm. Like he needs to win the money in the ring, not Stone Fox, the Indian, right? And so every time they say Indian in the book, I stop my students and I tell them like this is this is um like racial behavior on the author's part. And so for the characters in the book to call them an Indian just shows like that they're not educated. And we go into I had that whole conversation with them, how like whether people thought I was right or wrong back then, they thought it because of this education, but we know that like when Congress came to America, like he we know now he didn't go to India. Why are we calling them Indians? That was the only reason why people called them Indians, and so it's kind of the same in this situation, in the fact of we're going to continue watching this and in a sense supporting it, just so that's why we can stop and talk about how fucked up it is and educate others on why it's fucked up in an example that already exists and not creating a new one, right?

SPEAKER_01

And I think that that's it's also part of measuring society and cultural norms, right? Because we can go back to this show that aired about 20 years ago and see what was acceptable. We can I a lot of times at night I watch Cheers, okay, and it and that was a show that was 20 years before this one. And it's like sometimes you're like, what really? Like they got but at that time it was socially acceptable, and so sometimes it's the measure of how far we've come, sometimes it's the measure of how far we still need to go, but I think that as long as we're watching with we can still enjoy it for what it was, I think it's still okay, but I think that we also have to acknowledge the parts that still need work. And so if Cheers was made today, or or like you know, all in the family, because Archie Bunker, while a great show, for what it was, it would never hold up today. And it was progressive back then, but it was still something, you know? I mean a lot of that shit never would have fly. Flew.

SPEAKER_00

What we can never get away with that anymore, right? And I think but I think that it's still okay to say, look, like this is this is what was acceptable back then, and and we fought and and look at where we're at where we're at now, especially when we see that life's is starting to turn in the direction that the majority of us do not favor. It's sometimes it's nice to just stand back and see how far we have come then, right? To try our hardest, even though it is so so hard, especially in these times, to look with the glass half full.

SPEAKER_01

But also just for a minute, yeah, and and and I think that our past, um like art, and I and I use art broadly, right? Because it could be media, it could be books, it could be literal paintings. But I think it's also important for us to acknowledge the things that we don't like about some of it in the past, whether you're going back to the 2001, the 80s, the 70s, the 60s, the 50s, whatever, and say, you know, that that this XYZ is not acceptable to me. I don't I don't want to live like that. I don't I don't you know, I don't want that to be the way it is today. You know, but but it takes a critical eye. And you know, some people just want to cancel everything, some people want everything to stay the way it was in 1950, but what do you do? Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I hope that just to quickly add this in, because I'm seeing a lot of this pop up on my um my YouTube feed often. I hope we're starting to talk about this as in like like change. I hope we can have the same conversation in lieu of the treatment of child stars within the next 10 plus years, where finally everybody has caught on to the fact that like we exploit children for the pleasure of having something to watch, and it's like children in media are not like nobody's watching them enough, and so much shit's going on.

SPEAKER_01

Hold on, what are you doing? Back up. Oh, but she's a small dog, yeah. Okay, she's she's my big vicious dog, remember?

SPEAKER_00

No, girl, anyway. Yeah, sorry, that's okay, just small tangent just to start off the episode.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, we have to have at least one, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But episode one opens with our old friend Gabe, who's supposed to be watching his little brother, but instead um his friend rings the doorbell and they choose to smoke.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So his little brother, I guess him and his little brother share a room, and so he was like, I forgot the little brother, oh Anthony. He was like, Anthony, get out, or Tony get out. I forgot what he called his little brother, and he was like, Go mom's room, and so that's why like Gabe and his friend could, you know, get Gabe's drugs and then you know, sit there and smoke. So while Anthony, a six-year-old, like the six-year-old brother Gabe, while he's in his mother's room, he's seeing things very inappropriate things on her dresser, like there was like a fucking vibrator just like there on the dresser, and he's like looking at everything, and it's like oh not child-friendly stuff on her vanity, and he's looking at it, and then he starts to explore under her bed where he finds something wrapped up in a blanket, and almost immediately as soon as he started walking down the hallway to the mother's room.

SPEAKER_01

I was like, Oh my god, like and then when he looked under the bed, I was like, Oh fuck, oh god, like I was trying to mentally prepare myself.

SPEAKER_00

Um thankfully, you don't see anything, see anything, and I forgot about that part, and so when I was re-watching it, I was mentally preparing to see at least the moments leading up to it, and thankfully they gave us enough context clues for us to put it together, especially after you see Gabe smoking with his friend, um, talking about how big Anthony's getting, and then you hear a gunshot come from down the hallway.

SPEAKER_01

And then when they run and you just see them like looking with horror and like, oh fuck, oh fuck.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So that's yeah, that's the opening.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and and then we find out his full name's Anthony Christopher Fennelli. He was born in 1994, and he unfortunately died in 2001. Um, so while this scene was happening, I was quickly reminded of the first scene that we sorry, they're just they're so fucking annoying. Oh my god, that's how Emmy and Finn play. Oh go, go get them.

SPEAKER_01

I closed the door, but she pushed it open with the fat head, with her head, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the fat-headed huskies. I'm sorry, please no, it's okay, it's okay. Um, so this scene actually really brought me back to one of the first scenes in episode one when we meet Claire. We meet Claire at some like crack house, it pretty much looks like it's definitely not Gabe's house, it's not her house. And as soon as like she started to participate in the drug usage, just like as soon as Gabe was participating in his drug usage, they find out about the death of their family member. Claire by phone call and Gabe because he heard the gunshot.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and connect that.

SPEAKER_00

And while they're both freaking out over you know the deaths that just suddenly happened, the people around them were like, fuck, I gotta go, and just left them high and dry. And Gabe left Claire high and dry when she found out that her dad died, and Gabe's friend left him high and dry when he saw that his brother shot himself in the head.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, not according to the friend, but yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like he was just, you know.

SPEAKER_01

So the first time, because I I watched this episode like two or three times. The first time I didn't catch it, but the second time that you can you can hear a clock ticking.

SPEAKER_00

I saw that in your notes, I didn't know what that meant.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, there you can hear like the tick of the clock, and and the second time, I guess maybe because like my heart wasn't in my throat, was able to actually take in a little bit more. Yeah, I noticed that, and I was like, that is so eerie, so subtle, but like it it works, you know.

SPEAKER_00

The show is so good because I do things like that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so after like the death card where we see the kid's name and and his years, we cut to David, who's in the laboratory on a body when Nate enters, and we learn we we learn that Nate flunked his test, and David knows before Nate knows, which is great. He's like, Did you think I wasn't gonna find out? Nate's like, I don't even know.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god, David.

SPEAKER_01

And then the doorbell rings as they're like arguing, and Nate, so here's the only reason I bring it up because like nobody answers the door when they go upstairs. He's talking to the square dance guy, and the doorbell's still ringing, and David's like, David had already told Nate like you can't handle whatever's gonna come, and then he's like, But where's mom? But now if David can't if Nate can't handle it, how could Ruth handle it? Yeah, so Um's like, I don't know, stupid. David, stop just being David. He's just something else. Yeah, like he changed because by the time he gets to the door, he's changed. He's in his suit. He you know, he has to stop to talk to Kurt, but obviously at the door is um Abe and his mom, you know, to do an intake. Um just like it you could tell that it was rough. The mother is like not really speaking a lot, she doesn't want to see to see him. She wants it like over quickly, and so I guess like they just agree on like a clothes casket type deal. Um but we see we see Ruth in her room getting dressed, like in the scene is is showing her in front of her mirror, and you see senior sitting on the bed behind her watching her.

SPEAKER_00

And when she turns around, I was like, I forgot about this scene. I was waiting for her to start having a hallucination conversation with Senior, and yeah, she turns around and Hiram's sitting there because that's exactly what I thought was gonna happen, also.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and she's actually talking to Hiram. Hiram wants to go camping for their anniversary, and Ruth is like, we don't have anniversaries, I never agreed to that.

SPEAKER_00

It's like, oh, she's fucking cold as ice, like he's trying to do nice things for her. She's like, I never agreed to that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but I guess having an anniversary acknowledges just how long they've been together.

SPEAKER_00

But that's the thing, like it wasn't something that they both established. He said it was two years since we went camping, and that literally for Ruth, that's the day that she yeah, she lost it to him, yeah. That she decided to cheat on her husband who's dead now, right?

SPEAKER_01

And he's he's been dead for about six months, more actually, because the kid the kid died. Well, this episode aired in July. And so, give or take, he's been dead for about six months. So for a year and a half before he died, she was having a relationship with Hiram. So we have a little bit of like time frame. Yeah. Um when Gabe and his mom are leaving, Claire notices and and like the guys fill her in. So of course she runs right after Gabe. Which I I really, really feel for Claire this episode. She I mean the last contact that she had with him is like terrible because he told everybody she was like a toe fucker and or or sucker. I don't know what pig fucker, piggyfucker.

SPEAKER_00

Oh.

SPEAKER_01

Sorry.

SPEAKER_00

No, no, it's okay. But she this was just another case of like Claire knows last. And so Claire runs outside to talk to Gabe, and he just like looked like completely fucking lost. And he was trying to like talk to her, and he's just kind of standing there, and he's like, My mom's waiting for me to unlock the car.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But she was really sympathetic. She was really helpful in that situation. She is everything that David is not when it comes to consoling people.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's true. I mean, you could see she genuinely empathized with what he was going through, and he's just kind of broken.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he's I think he's just still stuck in the moment. I mean, we don't we don't know, but we know for sure that Gabe saw the scene of the crime. Right. Not the crime, but the scene of the death. I don't I'm sure his mom saw it too, but he s literally like saw it. I'm sure there was a sheet over by time like his mom got there, but he was the first one to know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and we know from from the dialogue uh later on with David, or or maybe even before, because they argue and so we know that he shot himself in the head, like in the face. Uh-huh. Because David says some shit like that.

SPEAKER_00

I don't want to yeah, so they were talking about like um cremation services or open cat or closed casket or whatever.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

And David's like, well, I don't want to be working on a kid with who blew out his brains or something.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah. So I it but all I did it again. All in all, it was pretty tastefully done reg regarding the aspects of his death. Like it was done enough to pull at your heartstrings, but not overly fuck fuck you up, you know. Yeah. But anyway, we'll we'll we can get into that later.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Ruth is at work now. And as she's ringing up this customer's order, he's looking for yellow roses because he wants to send them to his ex-girlfriend who cheated on him in like a very, very disgusting way. And you know, apparently yellow verses are for cowards, right? Um, and as for you know, the note on the flowers, because you know, Ruth is Ruth is being type A doing her job, and she's like, Oh, do you want to leave a note? And he's like, Yeah, fuck you, cunt.

SPEAKER_01

Well, the whole thing, the thing is funny because you know, he's like, Oh, well, what would you give to somebody that you love? And she's like, Well, Roses are the classic choice and she's doing her job great. And he's like, and how about for a coward? And how about if she ran away with somebody else? And Ruth is just like trying so hard to keep her composure and help this guy, but like you could see she's not comfortable. And then when she asks for the note, she's completely appalled, and but like in perfect Ruth fashion, she's like, Well, why don't you write it? It's more personal.

SPEAKER_00

She can't bring herself to write that, and it's almost as if like I feel like I see Ruth learning a little bit more and more about life through these little dumb experiences. Like, I feel like I saw her learning, like, I know flowers are for death, and you know, she just recently learned like the value of flowers for like happiness, like when she started working at the flower shop, and now she sees them being used in spite, right?

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

And I feel like yeah, I don't know. I just feel like she's like a toddler in this world. Like, I feel like she kept herself so bound in her relationship and her family, and she really didn't. I mean, like, that could have been her aspirations, period, and that's fine, but like now she has different values, and she's aligning her life in a different way, and she's just learning so much, and it's just so silly to like I don't know, she's just a silly character, yeah. So I thought this scene was like hilarious. Um, but right towards the end of the scene, she asked Nikolai for time off because she wanted to go camping with Hiram for their two-year like fake anniversary, and he was like, Why to go out with that? Um oh my god, what did he call her?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, what he he said with the the funny man or something like that.

SPEAKER_00

No, no, he made fun of like his food or something like that. Yeah, and then and then he made fun of his car, the car, the hiram's electric car.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, I forgot what he calls him, but yeah, so Nikolai did agree, but first he had to get in his punches, yep.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, Nikolai.

SPEAKER_01

Um, we head on over to Brenda's house with Nate, and when he arrives, she calls out that she's in the shower, which is literally deja vu to like the last couple episodes. She's always in the fucking shower.

SPEAKER_00

I know, like how clean does she need to be?

SPEAKER_01

What is she doing all day that she needs to shower? Um and so he sits down, he starts like rattling off his troubles, and then the next thing you see is like you know, arms on his shoulder, and they're like massaging him, but you know, from the scene, like you don't see above the neck, and you're like, Well, those are some manly hands. And it turns out it's Billy.

SPEAKER_00

And it's so weird again.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, Billy is just like massaging Nate, and Nate is like, What the fuck?

SPEAKER_00

Nate's like, Why are you here?

SPEAKER_01

He's like, What do you live here now? Yeah, and you know what? Not for nothing though, but if you if you come to my house and I normally am all alone and there's somebody else in the house, I would say, Hey, by the way, oh my, you know, so and so is somewhere. Like otherwise because because if you assume that that person was present, then you wouldn't need to call out from the shower because then that person would be like, Oh, Brenda's in the shower. So where the fuck was Billy?

SPEAKER_00

Billy just he knows he's the main character of his life, like we all do, but he knows it in a very like sociopath type way. He really like, I don't know, he really shows tendencies of a sociopath, and then the show makes his like punchline in that way, like, oh, he's just bipolar. Like, no, bipolar people don't act like him. Yeah, yeah, or people with bipolar disorder, not bipolar people, that's the wrong way of saying that.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, it defin the show definitely keeps hinting around an inappropriate relationship, and they do a little bit later on, too, don't they? Um, I don't remember. Maybe when I look at the notes. But they so like they're all having dinner, and then Billy starts rattling off facts, schooling Nate about child death and his job as you know, like working with death and and funeral director. Nate gets pissed off, you know, and Billy is kind of like, well, you should know about your profession if you ever want to be anything more than an amateur. But Brenda says how there's when when um when a spouse loses their when someone loses their spouse, they're like a widow or widower. If a if a child loses their parent, they're an orphan, but there's no name for a parent who loses their child because it's too sad.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And it's it was like really a profound thought, you know, because it's true. It's it is true.

SPEAKER_00

It's very true, and that was a really easy way of shutting down their argument yet again. Yeah, right. Which she's getting better at shutting them both down at the same time, which is kind of funny, but I don't know. I just Billy really rubs me the wrong way because he's supposed to rub us the wrong way.

SPEAKER_01

It's like it's fucking Jeremy Sisto. I really want to like you know, be like, oh Jeremy Sisto. Speaking of that, oh right?

SPEAKER_00

Um, David does something really interesting. David takes some E at the club with Kurt, and then he becomes fun.

SPEAKER_01

And like he Kurt tells him something about like dancing, and he's and David's like, I I'm not a good dancer, and Kurt's like, you will be.

SPEAKER_00

Now, forgive me if I'm wrong, but when David's at this club, oh wait, no, David goes back to the club and we will get back there.

SPEAKER_01

I'm thinking of yes, this is just the first time. But here's my little is it I've I've never done E. I'm I'm I'm an E virgin. But I know that it makes you thirsty. And so we see him drinking a lot of water all night, but then he's like kind of hung over the next morning. Is it supposed to make you feel hungover? I think I mean I don't know. I'm not asking you if like if you've done it, at least not like publicly, but no, no, no, no. Is that something you know?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I so I know people who have taken it and I've studied this a little bit because I thought it was really interesting. I think it's something with like a serotonin depletion. So I'm I'm pretty sure it's serotonin. And so you're kind of just like using all your stored serotonin when you um when you consume ecstasy, and then that's like the coming up, right? Because you're feeling all of that, but then there's the coming down, which is similar to what you're comparing it to, like a hangover, and you're kind of feeling the depletion of it, and so a lot of people like on the internet describe that feeling of like almost like being like very depressed and being very, very like upset and withdrawn, and um not being able like being almost like numb. And so like it's like a high and a low. So that come down is like a really emotional come down.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, all right.

SPEAKER_00

Then that makes a little more sense because I was just trying to work it out in my head, like yeah, all right, yeah, it's not like weed, like where there's like no hangover at all, like come up, but then there's like yeah, maybe a headache at best. I don't know. I haven't partaken in too much marijuana use, but I don't think I've ever felt any kind of like hangover from it or like come down from it. You only really feel like the going up, and then it's just there, and then it just kind of dissipates. Yeah, that's what I mean. That's like that's the high, that's the up part, and then it just kind of slowly dissipates, you don't just like crash down.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's all of a sudden you're like, wait, I'm not I'm not high. Okay, things are normal, exactly.

SPEAKER_00

And there's no like there's no like imbalance of your chemicals after, you know what I'm saying?

SPEAKER_01

You drink a little bit of water and you're fine, yeah. It's it's not a hangover.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I've I've been it's more like a side effect, that's what you're saying.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, and it goes away pretty quickly. I mean, I've I've been hungover a few times, and it's god, it's awful. But no. Okay, no more drug talk. We'll save all the fun drug stuff for the pre-show.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but um, so at school, Gabe's friend Andy is talking shit about the incident. Um, Claire asks how Gabe is to Andy, and Andy's just being like the biggest fucking asshole to her. Seriously, but then like Claire claps back and she's like, Oh, and Parker. She told me about your little medical problem. Um, is your dick really the size of a peanut? Or like some shit. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But she's perfect. Okay. She was like, she didn't even flinch when he when he tried to take her down.

SPEAKER_00

She was like, Well, Parker told me and yeah, no, she didn't study before she went to class, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she was perfect. I um even though she is my gravigger of the week, I have to give her credit for that line because that was the best line. Like it didn't get me six feet under because it was one line that got me more than that, but that one was like the next best. Yeah, that was that was almost my uh quotes that got me six feet under.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I don't know that for sure. Like that that line has to be my like quote that got me six feet under.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was horrific.

SPEAKER_00

That pretty much floored me when I heard it and I forgot about it. And that was just like a sweet little surprise when I was watching.

SPEAKER_01

I was like, Oh, yeah, and you know, it's high school, and she says it in front of people, and you don't see the people, but then you hear them like, is that true?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that was the best one afterwards, and he's like, Shut up. No, true, yeah. Oh, and this leads us into who was my grave digger of the week.

SPEAKER_01

Um it was this was a close one, you know, because there were a few fuck-ups in this episode.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm sorry, I was reading something while I was talking. I think I just skipped ahead accidentally too much. My gravedigger of the week will come up in a little bit, but at home now, David's looking for his aspirin when Ruth arrives to do laundry. Did I say laundry? I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't catch it if you did.

SPEAKER_00

I said Ruth arrives to do laundry, and my words are just mushing together. But as like Ruth's trying to talk to David, he's having a flashback and he remembers taking the drugs out of his pocket, like the extra ones that Keith gave him at the bar, and he remembers Keith. Oh, I'm sorry, Kurt, Kurt, Kurt, yeah, there's too many cuts.

SPEAKER_01

I don't well, why did Kurt hand him like a handful of drugs? Like, why didn't he just give him a few? He was like safety for later, right? I some shit like that, but like, do you not know who you're trying to drug?

SPEAKER_00

Like, David Exactly. No, but then David like takes the extras, and he remembers taking the extras and putting them in like the aspirin bottle that like his whole bottle his whole house uses.

SPEAKER_01

So so what ends up happening is that he's he's still like struggling a little bit, and so he's looking for the aspirin, and then as he's getting the aspirin from the kitchen cabinet, he's having these flashbacks of the night before and like the dancing and the partying and the sex and Kurt and like everything that's going on, and and so then he remembers that there's the drugs in his pocket.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, that's what it was.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and then when Ruth like interrupts him, the fucking idiot puts the drugs in the aspirin bottle, the communal aspirin bottle in the kitchen. Because you know that's a fucking good idea.

SPEAKER_00

David is the runner-up gravedigger of the week. Yeah, he's a runner-up, I think for both of us.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was and I was even thinking, like, could it be Andy? But then I was like, fuck Andy, like he's not important enough.

SPEAKER_00

This like this moment, oh yeah, no, Andy is an asshole. But this moment with David is just going to like take us throughout the rest of the episode, like this aspirin bottle and its effects on people, and the people who actually touch the aspirin bottle throughout the episode, like it just kind of carries us to the end. So continuing on, back at school, Parker's warning Claire not to get involved with Gabe. Uh, Claire's just ignoring all her advice and goes to Gabe's house anyway after school. But when she walks in and she's looking for Gabe, instead she finds Gabe's mom.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and she's just like catatonic. She is not, it's like she's not aware of anything. She's just sitting there smoking. But this that scene with Parker and Claire, that was the scene when Parker warns Claire not to get involved and said that it would be like the emotional rape that we talked about.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And like I get where Parker is coming from because it's definitely not a good situation, but but I understand and agree with what you were talking about about the wording.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like in context, yes, it was high school students, ignorant high school students, but also ignorant because of like the way society spoke about things and looked at things, and there was like a difference in social culture 20 years ago around really, really disgusting, horrible acts of humanity. Um, but now we're in a place 20 years in the future, um, and we're both like full adults where we can fully understand like what we're saying, how it could be portrayed and its effects on other people. And maybe there are just some high schoolers because yes, they're children, they don't have fully developed brains, they can't really understand things, and they can't really fully sympathize or empathize, empathize with others' experiences if like thankfully they have not had their own in that situation to know like how terrible it is to use the word in slang.

SPEAKER_01

So and that's the thing, right? Because Parker was, it seems like she was coming from a good place because she was warning Claire to protect her, and I it's like I completely understand what she was going for, it's just the poor choice of words. But is it because the writers are lazy, or is it because as a high schooler, you may not have the vocabulary to properly express what you're trying to express without, you know, I I don't know. I I at 42 years old, I don't have the vocabulary either, so what do I know?

SPEAKER_00

And maybe like just knowing Parker's background and how she's raunchy in both her behaviors and in the things that she says, maybe this was something written in for her to say to really show like the way that she portrays the world, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I think that at the very basic level, what she's talking about is that Claire's gonna feel violated, yes, and I think that it was just a stand-in word for effect, and and that's how I'm like trying to resolve it for myself, but but I can understand the whole feeling violated thing, yes, yeah, but you want to move on to uh Brenda and Nate and Brenda's great idea.

SPEAKER_00

My great breaker of the week, Brenda. Is she really? Yes, she is because of how to up this is. Brenda had the bright idea to help Nate with the business, and by doing this, she A chooses three random funeral parleys to reckon, and then as they go to them, well, okay, wait, let's give a little context.

SPEAKER_01

She realizes how Nate is so uncomfortable with death, but he's a funeral director, and so she wants him to feel more comfortable, and so she has the bright idea to pick three random funeral parlors, and then they're gonna go there so that he could see what it's like to be on the other side. Okay, they're gonna do some recon.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Recon.

SPEAKER_00

I brand. I please cut that out. Um funeral recon. Funeral recon. So the first things they do is they act as if like their parents died in a helicopter accident. Look, at this point, we know how Brenda tells. Tell stories and Brenda's just working her fucking magic here and she she's brilliant. She would be a great actress if she wasn't so narcissistic. Although that is a great trait of a great actress.

SPEAKER_01

I guess.

SPEAKER_00

Um so yeah, just generally she was a great actress in the show, but as her character, she really should be in acting. They're in LA anyway, like why not? Um and so like at first they go into like one funeral home, they act like their parents died. The second time they go into a different funeral home, they act like as if it's for like an uncle. And the third time, and the worst time, which makes her the gravedigger of the week, um, she pretends as if the funeral is for herself, as if she's dying of cancer, and she pops in with like cloth wrapped around her head, as if like she's chemo and she's bald, even though you can see the hair, but yeah, yeah, right, it wasn't it was not covering all her hair. But at the same time, like somebody who's starting chemo, yeah, yeah, yeah, doesn't lose their hair immediately, it's like just gradual, rapid loss, and so like maybe that was like the one strand she had left. Yeah, so like okay, like it could, yeah, it could it could be so horrible laughing, but it's it's just horrible because she's horrible as a character, which makes it funny.

SPEAKER_01

But you know what? I can't even lie, I didn't mind her whole shtick. Like I really didn't because I feel like it was a great idea. I mean, her methods, like especially in the last one, were a little like okay, Brenda, this is you know, but the whole oh my parents died, and and and then she says, like, the guy wanted to sell them merchandise, that's his answer. The second guy was a swindler, he's like, We have this great, and he's like, Um, it's between a highway and like a sewage treatment plant.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And but the last lady, she she fooled me if she was an act, but she was great, she was so gentle, she was so empathetic, and just you know, like that's the kind of person that you would want to go to for your funeral needs, and I think that she if if if Nate didn't like kind of walk out, I feel like that would have been the person that Nate should have looked up to, so to speak. And I get it, like it it it was a shock because Nate didn't even know that she was gonna do that.

SPEAKER_00

But that's the thing, like Nate didn't know she was gonna do that, and she comes out pretending like she's gonna die. I'm like, imagine your significant other doing some shit like that. It's really fucked up, and Nate says something about it afterwards, too. Yeah, he's like that's how fucked up it was.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and then he's like, and that's not funny, and she's like, but it wasn't supposed to be. I mean, I get it though, you know. I I from my perspective, it really didn't bother me that much. I see, like, I see what she was trying to do, and I think that out of the things that she's done, I mean, you know, when when it comes to Brenda, you could be like, that's not even the least fucked up thing that she's done today, but with with this, I just didn't feel like it was so bad. Because she was doing it to help him.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, but she took it too far, like Brenda always does, and she's the continuous gravigger, but you know, sometimes there are people my gravedigger of the week, though. No, that's what I'm saying. Like, sometimes there are people who just dig a little faster and deeper, but like she's she's making her way down there, she's still always on the radar because of the things that she always does. Yeah, she just puts herself in holes, she puts herself in holes all the time. I just don't and then she gets like upset about it too, and it's like, um, so stop just stop doing what you're doing, right? She's very much aware of her own actions, she knows what she's doing, she knows the implications of this. She's not a stupid woman, she's the complete opposite of it, as it's been like possible throughout the show. Yeah, so she's doing this deliberately because she's looking for reactions because she she like as much as she's pretending to feel, she can't feel.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, maybe you're right. I don't know, but Nate, Nate, and Brenda. Obviously, they leave the last funeral home, they kind of argue about it in the car, and Brenda barks. That was funny.

SPEAKER_00

Brenda didn't bark. Anyway, Ruth has her day off, and she's packed. She, you know, she's packing for her trip, just practical things, things they'll actually need for camping while Hiram's out here packing champagne. Right. Well, that I mean it could be important too. It's their two-year-anniversary. Yeah, it's but that's the thing, it's a two-year anniversary for him, and he's packing for it, but it's not for her, and she's not packing for that, you know.

SPEAKER_01

She's packing a bear bell and a water purifier. But Hiram is so sweet, and he's just and she's telling him everything. He's like, but you always pack everything, you know, like don't worry. He's just like, wouldn't it be nice if everyone was so supported or felt so supported as Hiram made Hiram makes Ruth feel? I'm just saying.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it would be I see like the both of them together. Like, if Ruth is a square, what are those called? Um, Hiram's like a squirrel, like a square circle. You ever see a square with rounded edges? It's called that up. No, like a squirrel is like a thing, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

I like 100% feel like a squirrel is a thing.

SPEAKER_01

I have no idea. Oh, listen, we'll go with it.

SPEAKER_00

I gotta look it up now, I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_01

While you look it up though, as they are as she's packing, Claire comes in, says that she has a headache, and then goes for the aspirin. So you're already like, oh shit.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I was on the edge of my seat.

SPEAKER_01

And then Ruth lets her know that they're going camping. And is it Hiram who says like for the anniversary?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, Hiram's trying to like really explain it. Claire's just like looking at the both of them, like, I don't give a shit about anything.

SPEAKER_01

No, not at all. And um, but I also thought it was a little funny because it's like there her father has only been dead for what, maybe six months at that time. And here's Hiram talking about an anniversary, and I know that it's coming from a good place from Hiram, but know your audience, buddy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he he was like, I don't care, I'm just doing it anyway.

SPEAKER_01

Gabe arrives, but he's like outside. I don't know how Claire finds him, I don't remember. He was just standing out there, like she was because he was just standing there, he didn't like ring the bell or anything, so I don't remember how like she was leaving for a reason.

SPEAKER_00

I forgot her reason, but she was leaving for a reason. He was just standing there with um like a puppy clothes in a paper bag, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And it's like oh your heart, you know?

SPEAKER_00

I know, like the wet puppy in the rain, you know? Or the lost puppy in the rain, I meant. But you know what I meant.

SPEAKER_01

And then he, you know, he just says, like, would it be okay if he's buried in his soccer clothes? You know, Claire is just so gentle, and she's like, Yeah, of course. Like, I think that's a great idea, you know. And it's not really much to that scene, but he he heads out, she takes the the clothes, and and like that's it. But it was enough, like it was enough, like as a watcher to just be like, Ugh, my heart. My heart. I agree. And then you you cut and you see David finishing up on the boy, but you again you don't see him, but you just see his leg. You see David like tying his shoe and he's obviously wearing like his soccer stuff, yeah. And so you you know that it's him, and you're just like, ugh, it's a poor baby. Yeah, and David is distraught because you know, he calls Kurt and then they make plans for later. And then he goes like crazy rummaging through the kitchen cabinets because he's looking for the aspirin. He wakes up Claire, who was on the couch, and he accuses her well no, she said she said she took an aspirin, and he's like, Are you okay? How do you feel? And she's like, I'm fine. Why? She calls him out on wearing his clothes because then the horn honks, and she's like, Oh my god, you have a date? Yeah, and he's just like, You took it, you took it and you you found it, you kept it for yourself, and Claire is just like like I feel like one part of her brain is like, What the actual fuck is going on? and the other part is amused because then she's like because he he comes clean and he tells her because she's like, What was in that bottle? She's like, I'm fine, but what was in that bottle? and he tells her, and Claire is like, Are you like split personality when mom goes away? She's like, 'Cause I like this guy, but no, the bottle of aspirin is not there, and we then learn that it was it wasn't Claire. Claire didn't get the magic pill.

SPEAKER_00

No, Ruth took the bottle, and now we get to see how this unfolds. So the bottle is making its way through the episode.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, they don't even waste any time because you see them setting up their camp.

SPEAKER_00

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

And right away, Claire is like, where are we gonna hang the food from the bear? And they they talk about that for like a minute, and then you see them sitting, and she's like, I have a headache. And all of a sudden she has the aspirin bottle right next to her, uh-huh. And she just takes the aspirin, and you're like, Oh, this is gonna be Ruth. But it's like the the what is it, like the Yaya sisterhood of the traveling pants? It's like the Fisher family brotherhood, familyhood of the traveling excessive aspirin bottle. Seriously, how many of them are gonna touch it?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's true, and something that I noticed in the scene was any way like Ruth could make the trip as negative as possible. She didn't like when she was talking about like hanging up the food from bears so that it'll get mauled, she has to immediately go back to like, oh well, that actually happened once, and like oh menstruation, yeah, menstruation, yeah, and how you can't bring up tampers being mauled, and like this actual thing that happened that like who fucking does that? Hiram's trying to make it really nice for them, and she's just like, We could die. This is how but then Ruth changes after she takes that aspirin.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but we're not we're not there yet, but we I mean we could talk about it.

SPEAKER_00

No, we are not. We still have one more scene before we get to check back in with Ruth, and in this scene, we're checking back in with David, yeah, who also is about to take something from an aspirin bottle, not from an aspirin bottle again. You know what I mean? Yeah, David's at the club with Kurt, and as like Kurt's hitting on him again, David's like you know, anxious. He's like, Oh my god, like you know how David is in his head. He's like, the only thing that matters is this lost E. And he's like, I lost the E.

SPEAKER_01

Why did he tell him in the car before they got there? I don't know at any point in private.

SPEAKER_00

That's David, though. Like, David's like, oh, it's not gonna be a problem until the actual moment. Just being like immature about things again. And Kurt's like, I don't care, like, you're my drug of choice. At that point, when I was watching this for a second time, I turned to Jeff and I said, Am I your drug of choice?

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god. I hope he said yes.

SPEAKER_00

Shut up.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, okay. That's acceptable too.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was the corniest line that I just like I couldn't even hold it in. It just regurgitated out of my mouth. It was it was so disgusting. And as like this whole situation is going on, where Kurt's like, no, you're my drug of choice. Um, I'm pretty sure they start kissing, and then David sees Keith.

SPEAKER_01

Well, Kurt Kurt notices because he's like, Who's the guy that's been staring?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yes, that's what it was. And that's when David realizes who was staring at Keith, and Keith is at the club with his new beau, who is like an EMT worker, and so it's like a cop and an EMT, and um, and then it's like you know, David and the square dance guy. Keith approaches David too, and they talk for a little bit, and then after like their conversation, Keith actually ends up seeing David and Kurt like taking drugs on the dance floor, and Keith tells his like his new guy, he's like, We're getting out of here now, like we're leaving.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we're leaving.

SPEAKER_00

But right before that, like David was telling Kurt like when originally when they first had that conversation, right when Keith was walking over, David's like, Don't mention anything about drugs, he's a cop.

SPEAKER_01

He's a cop, be cool, be cool, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Be cool, he's a cop, David, which was so David and David.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, and like Kurt, Kurt is so funny, he's like, Oh, what like something like would he would he be into a three-way? Like Kurt is just straight up always thinking of sex.

SPEAKER_00

And speaking of trying to find a guy for a three-way, that's how David ends up seeing Kurt towards the end of the scene. Kurt is making out with a guy at the club, and David just looks at him and he's like, What the fuck? And Keith's like, Oh, he said he would be down for a three-way with us, and David's like, No, no, right, and David's David's like, I'm not, I'm still not into the three ways. You mentioned it earlier, you're mentioning it again. I don't want this, and David leaves, and he leaves Kurt at the club with like that other guy he was like hooking up with.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I mean, I'm sorry, but like even if a threesome is on the table, you gotta have some balls. Maybe maybe it's because I'm not a gay man. I don't know. Maybe that's how you do things, but like you just show up with this guy, and then all of a sudden you're like sitting on the couch with somebody else making out and be like, hey, no, but it's cool because he's gonna he wants to come home with uh no, those are boundaries you need to discuss first in any kind of relationship, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, not cool, not cool, period. But Kurt is made to be like this easy, crazy, simple, young, like twinkly, and like apparently nothing matters to those men, which is a stereotype, and so that's pretty much the end of them, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, for now.

SPEAKER_00

But now we head back to Ruth, yes, who is right now tripping balls, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um and she is off on some weird Alice in Wonderland-esque journey in the forest, and so like in Alice in Wonderland, not the Disney version, like the better version, you know, like Lewis Carroll. I mean, they'll whatever. It's it's all a white rabbit that she follows. But Ruth follows like a it was a bear, right? From what I could tell.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was like a a character bear. Like, you know how like um like how I don't know, like Pluto and Mickey Mouse are in like character costumes at Disneyland. It was like that kind of like character.

SPEAKER_01

I could tell it wasn't like supposed to be a real bear.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, no, it wasn't like a CGI bear. It was like literally like somebody in a costume, and it was made to look like a costume, and she was like, Oh, who are you? Follow you.

SPEAKER_01

And the bear has a pocket watch, which is like Alice in Wonderland, right? Like, because the white rabbit is always like, I'm late, I'm late for a very important date. And he has his watch, but you hear the clock ticking again. Oh, are you saying that's a connection to like the intro? I guess I'm not like I I had a hard time trying to like reconcile the ticking, but I noticed that it was ticking again, and she follows the bear, and eventually she finds Nate Sr. who's working on their old hearse.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and the scene starts, and you only see the hearse, and then he slides out from underneath it. Yeah, it was so powerful, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And like before that, she's all like giggly and like childish, she's hugging trees and just hee hee he's feeling them, she's feeling everything, yeah. And until she sees the bear, then she follows. And um, this was my quote of the week. My quote quote that had you six feet under the quote that had and one of the animals just breached the room. I don't know which one it is yet. Um, they finally made it past and opened the door. And it's Stella. You hear her nails? Yeah, she is.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I hear her jingle.

SPEAKER_01

So when she's talking to him, he says, What? You're hitting on me now? Two guys aren't enough for you, you slut. Yeah, I was like, Oh my god. But then she starts giggling, and I was like, Okay, well it's okay then.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was interesting to see that they had banter like that.

SPEAKER_01

And he, you know, he basically tells her, you know, they talk about how they got together when they were kids, and um, you know, she admits that she was seeing Hiram and and Nay is just kind of like absolving her of it. I mean, again, he's a figment of her imagination, so this is probably more so what she wants to hear than maybe what he would actually say. But I think that it's funny if you go if you continue along those lines because when he says that he has his money on the florist, and I was like, okay, well that's interesting. But she says that she misses what they had, and he's like, So find it again. Yeah, yeah. And I was like, Well, you know what?

SPEAKER_00

Like, it's a little strange that whole scene, but it was it was cool, you know, like yeah, her finding the graves and the hearse and them reminiscing, but so she came out of this with like almost enlightenment about what to do with the rest of her life, but at the same time, Hiram came out of this in the morning with some really good sex. Yeah, so apparently, according to Hiram, he had the best sex of his life last night with Ruth, and she doesn't remember any of it because she was in this whole trip. Yeah, so I don't know if she thought all that was happening, she wasn't actually walking through the forest touching trees, or she pulls a leaf out of her hair. Yeah, so I'm not I still don't know.

SPEAKER_01

She was there somewhere, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, maybe they weren't like going at it in the tent, maybe it was outside the tent, and that's why she has a leaf in her hair.

SPEAKER_01

Like, either way, multiple things happened that we weren't aware of like the last time that we went upstate and it was secluded, and me and Alex were there alone waiting for you before I almost died, yeah. Before you almost died, yeah, yeah. You know, why go indoors? Make a sit on a wooden crossbench by the fire.

SPEAKER_00

Why not? Yeah, no, live your best life, like exactly.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, there might be a video somewhere on the internet, but whatever.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god, there was cows, there were cows and one horse. Yes, the cat, the cows have eyes. I know that sounds dumb, but like it, I don't know. It's the first thing that came to me like, yes, Britney, cows do have eyes, but the cows have eyes.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, yeah. Have you ever seen the cows with eyes painted on their butt? What? Yeah, so it apparently it's a thing to help with like predators, they paint eyes on cows' butts. You can Google it.

SPEAKER_00

That's so messed up. I mean it's not because you're like you're helping out the cows, but yeah, Google it.

SPEAKER_01

It looks they look it looks so weird.

SPEAKER_02

Cow eyes for bud.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um but okay, so I have a question. After Hiram thanks her for like the you see it.

SPEAKER_00

Scientists, scientists pay eyes on cow buds in Africa to confuse predators like lions.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, but it works.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And it's it's kind of cute looking. They look like weird elephants.

SPEAKER_00

They do look like weird elephants. Okay, enough internet for today.

SPEAKER_01

If you want a little bit of a laugh, look up the cows with the eye butts. The eyes painted on their butt. Oh, so when Hiram thanks her and was like for the passionate night, and and like how she's never been that passionate before, and Ruth is like last night, and she just starts laughing. I don't get it. Did I miss something?

SPEAKER_00

Maybe because she's realizing like what she was feeling. Maybe she realized that what she was feeling emotionally was what she like in response to what she was physically, like actually physically doing and not what we saw her physically doing. I don't know. Maybe, or maybe like she's actually having memories and like coming back to her.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I just like that struck me as odd because I I just couldn't make sense of it. And I feel like it's something so simple, but it just didn't make sense to me. So at home now, yeah. Thank you.

SPEAKER_00

So at home now, services beginning. Keep going, keep going.

SPEAKER_01

You're almost my Blanche class.

SPEAKER_02

I love that class.

SPEAKER_01

I know usually you use it. I do, but it was it was sitting out, so I used it.

SPEAKER_00

Miss Blanche Debereux. Why haven't we done a Patreon episode for like our favorite Golden Girls episode?

SPEAKER_01

Because your schedule sucks.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Because we're still waiting on you to do Charlie work.

SPEAKER_00

I have watched the episode, which I know you have.

SPEAKER_01

We just I'm gonna have to re-watch it like again. I mean punishment, all the punishment, and and actually um sidebar, because we did discuss some extra bonus stuff for Patreon. So hopefully that will be coming soon, also. Like there'll be a little bit extra bonus content, not all with Britney, because Britney's too busy for us these days.

SPEAKER_00

Fucking me over continuous.

SPEAKER_01

She's too busy being extorted to record a free podcast. Uh-huh. But you know, you can help if you just donate to us enough for her to pay her bills every month. She won't have to worry about being a teacher. So I'm just I'm just saying, guys, you know, I'm just saying. You know, everybody just starts kicking in a few bucks. It would help. Yeah. Yeah. Think about it.

SPEAKER_00

I need to link my um my Amazon wish list too. Yeah, we have to have some things in there that plenty of my students would benefit from. I'm in this situation, just to quickly touch upon this, in my class where I have students that are on a third grade level, and then I have a nice chunk. I want to say maybe like 15 students out of the 48 that I teach that are on a first grade reading and writing level because they have learning disabilities, but we can't get to all of them at once. And then I have some students that because there's no ESL program, like like um, we have an ESL program or English as a second language program in our school, but it's kind of like a pull-up service, not like a secluded classroom. So I have students in my class that just literally don't speak English. Nice, and the only language that I speak is English, and the the other angle, the other languages that I know are not helpful for me in this situation. And so I'm in the process of trying to buy and find books, like specifically right now, like the language that I'm having like barrier issues with is Spanish. So I don't know much Spanish at all. I took it throughout school, I don't remember shit. Um, and even the words that I do remember, my Spanish friend looks at me as if I'm saying everything completely wrong.

SPEAKER_01

And I look at him and I say because you when you when you learn Spanish in a school setting, usually it's like colloquial we say it colloquial, uh sure. Okay, but it's it's like Spain-ish.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I see what you're saying. Okay, yeah, he gets it.

SPEAKER_01

Because then you you have like all the countries from Latin America, and there's like plenty of different dialects. So the people who live in Spain are not gonna speak the same Spanish as the people in Mexico or Puerto Rico or Dominican Republic. Think about it like this, right? If we live in the United States, but if you live, say, in New England, you speak differently than if you live in Alabama.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but we still say chicken, right? So I was trying to tell him like what was for lunch, and I said pollo, and he looked at me as if I said it wrong. Did I say it right or wrong?

SPEAKER_01

You it's right, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But he looked at me like I had five heads. I was like arose, right? Chicken and rice.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, you didn't roll your Rs, but yeah. I can't we're gonna have to work on that.

SPEAKER_00

I can't at all. What?

SPEAKER_01

I can't it it's it's it's almost like a D sound. Like what what's the stuff that you spread? Well, maybe not you because you're vegan, but like the rest of us spread on our toast. The yellow stuff?

SPEAKER_00

Butter.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, you you feel and hear how you say your t's.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, like a double T sounds like a T.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So when you roll your R's, it's kind of like that, but longer.

SPEAKER_00

So a DOS, a dos? No. I'm saying that wrong.

SPEAKER_01

Pretend, pretend it's two T's. No. Like butter. But you don't say butter.

SPEAKER_02

Atos? Atos?

SPEAKER_01

No. No, you're thinking about it. I am thinking about it. No. You know when you say a word like butter. This is the per this is I use butter because it's the the best example. It's two T's, but it sounds like a D. Right? Because you said it's almost like you're saying like a word with a D in it, but you're not making like a distinctive D sound, but it's the same kind of way when you roll your R's, it's that same like mouth formation almost. There you go.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it made sense. Okay, okay. I said something the way that you're actually supposed to. And I have two friends in my class who speak Spanish and English at home, so they're like my built-in translators, but they've been absent a lot lately because it's blue season. And one of them happened to overhear me say something, and I thought I was saying it the correct way. Like maybe I was saying, um, oh shit, what's that restaurant in Jersey City that I like? Yeah, but I it's right across like the cigar place, right? Yeah, and I say, like, when you read it, it sounds like one way, but you're actually supposed to pronounce it another way, like add it orale instead of oral, you're supposed to say like, yeah, yeah. So it was something like that, where like if you're gonna say it like the word, the way that's spelled, if you're going to speak it as if you would in English, you would say oral, because that's what it looks like. But if you're going to say it the correct way in like Spanish, it would be orale or whatever. So I was trying to say the word like that, and I knew I was saying it the right way. My Spanish friend, my Spanish English friend looked at me like, what, Miss Young? What staying your lame teacher? And I was just like, Well, she didn't say that, but she said it with her odds, and I was just like, I'm trying here, friends. Just sit down and do your morning work.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, but you know what? Not even every teacher. Oh, look, I I just looked it up, I found it. You see it?

SPEAKER_00

It's so good that place.

SPEAKER_01

I've I've never been there. I've been to the cigar shop.

SPEAKER_00

No, we're gonna have to.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, let's get back to it. It this isn't even a funny scene. We just went off on a tangent again.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I don't even know how we got there, but I I had mentioned something about my class. Oh, my point, my quick to close my sidebar so this way we can continue on. I am trying to acquire books in both Spanish and English.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so because our socials are still all locked up.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

We can try to figure out a way to hook it up to the website. Maybe that will work. Um, we can tweet it though. Twitter, Twitter still works. Elon Musk hasn't taken that away from us yet.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I I don't know. Like I hear all these rumors, I don't really know what's going on on Twitter, but for now, we can still use that avenue. So I I always wanted to do like a book club, and it was it was actually one of the ideas that I had for like the podcast for like Patreon, and it's just never panned out. And I even tried it with Alex, and he's just like, why? I'm just like, why do you hate me?

SPEAKER_00

On Al, like participating fun.

SPEAKER_01

I know, and but the thing is, like, he's a reader, it's not like he's not a reader, and he reads fast. I don't read fast, like I read and I like to savor what I'm reading. I like to read every word, and I I could read faster if I want to, and I don't. And he's just like, how would that work? Like, he's like, it would take you like twice as long to read what I and then he's just like, shut up! Like, I just want to do it. Let me live. Like, let me let me start my club. Like, I know it takes me four months to read a book, but who cares? I read it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that was actually something that I was thinking of um the other day. Like, why don't we do like a little book club thing? And I'm like, okay, well, first off, with my time, like I would really fuck that up. Um, but like I have books that like I found in like my book box in my neighborhood that are just like modern classics.

SPEAKER_01

I get a free book every month, and it takes me like what between you know my responsibilities and my schedule, it's like I read a book every three months, so I have plenty. So I'm not I'm not really worried about like finding stuff to read. Yeah, but okay, tangent over.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, we need to get back to the funeral.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

At the home services have begun for Anthony. Um, naked to new suit, which is oh so interesting.

SPEAKER_01

He decides that he needs a second one, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And sorry, I was what was that? I was playing with this cuticle clicker before, and I put it on my chair and I forgot about it, and it fell into the floor. Yeah. So I've been like squeezing it because it's just fun to do this, so yeah, that's what I've been doing. Um, so Gabe talks to Claire, and then as he's talking to Claire, this man walks in, who we find out is actually like Anthony's father, who like got up and left when he was like two years old. Um, and his name's Sam. And so we find out a little bit more about Sam, but the first way that we're introduced to Sam is him walking into the funeral and kicking Gabe's ass in front of everybody, blaming Gabe for what happened.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

Which even though like Gabe could be at fault, I think Sam is mostly at fault.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, like um the foundation is but I'll I'll wait till I mean fuck it, I won't wait. The thing is that like Gabe wasn't watching him. That's that's established, but at the same time, where the fuck were you? You left a a fucking unsecured loaded gun in a blanket under the bed where anybody could fucking touch it, and then you want to blame Gabe? Like, I get it. What is she doing? Like, she's just being annoying. Oh, she's so cute. Like it it didn't even phase me at first because I'm so used to her antics, but yeah, so sorry about that.

SPEAKER_00

Um okay, um, no, but where the fuck was Sam? I mean, he just got up and left, and he said that like when he got up and left, and he was okay, so Claire breaks up the fight between Gabe and Sam, and then Nate takes well Claire sets up for him because she was like, and where the fuck were you? Oh, yeah, you're right. And then Nate actually breaks him up because he's holding Sam back, he takes him into like that side room, and then like Sam starts like going off, like, and who was that girl? And Nate's like, Well, that was my sister, yeah, and he's like, That's my sister, and he's like, Well, she needs to learn not to get involved with Gabe because he's a no-good kid or anything. He's makeup and yeah, and Nate lets Sam go off for a minute, and then he's like, Excuse me, but and Nate puts him in his place. Like, if Anthony was that important to you, you wouldn't have got up and you wouldn't have left. And he's like, Well, the only reason why like the gun was in the house anyway was because I got it for like the mother, because or like whatever their mom's name is, I forgot what mom's name is. I don't remember either, and and that's I left at work or something. It's like that's bullshit.

SPEAKER_01

He says he left for work to make some money, okay. And he left her the gun for protection, okay. But you didn't secure it, she didn't secure it, and yes, a hundred percent Gabe wasn't watching him, but sound sounds to me like Gabe wasn't the one who left a fucking loaded gun where the kid could get it. Yeah, so yes, Gabe wasn't watching him, but why was there a loaded gun where a six-year-old can reach it?

SPEAKER_00

Exactly, and the fact that like this didn't happen any sooner, and you knew that Gabe was a fuck up, right?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, Gabe is not worth anything, he's a fuck up, he's this, he's that. So you knew that, but you still trusted him to watch your kid with a loaded gun in the house. Who's the adult here?

SPEAKER_02

Exactly.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, it's a terrible, terrible accident at the end of the day that could have been avoided, but in so many ways. But at the end of the day, Gabe, I'll I'll give Gabe this. He feels guilty enough. You know, because he does feel responsible, but it's just it's just not that simple. You know, it's just not that simple. Yeah, as as you know, like his friend came over and he got high. Like, he's a fucking teenager. What do you expect from him? You know, it's true. Like, even when I leave my kids, it's it's constant. It's like, okay, remember, and and they're like, I know, I know, and I'm like, no, no, no, but I'm just reminding you again, you know, like don't close your door and keep your door open and make sure because I don't have a loaded gun in the house, but like anything can happen. Anything can happen. Anyway, but Nate going back to the scene, Nate was kind of callous with him. He was he was like, Well, I guess that's all the time that you had to spend with him, and we could die, we could all die like any time now. I forgot what else he says, but I was like, damn, Nate, like he wasn't as sympathetic as he usually is.

SPEAKER_00

No, he was very Brenda, yes, he was very matter-of-fact, and maybe he feels like he needs to be matter-of-fact and not in any way attached, like how these other directors were who are somewhat successful that they went around to earlier in the episode. Yeah, I didn't consider that, but that could be that could have been a change immediately, unless he was already pissed off and just took it out on Sam.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. I mean, either way.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Well, anyway, ending our episode. Um, Ruth is back from camping and she's unpacking in the kitchen. David walks in and he asks how camping was, and Ruth is like, it was great. I had a great time, like everything was wonderful and gorgeous and electric. And he's like, Oh my god. And immediately he figures out where the drugs went.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but he, I mean, he prompts her too because he's like, uh, so no headaches. And she's like, you know what? I no, or or no sickness or so. I forgot what exactly he says, but she's like, you know, but I had a headache, and the aspirin, and I took an aspirin and it went away. He's like, Yeah, aspirin is great, but he figures it out pretty quickly.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And so this is taking place, like this scene happens after the funeral is way over.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So Claire ends up walking in the kitchen. She comes in to get two waters. She explains who the other waters for, which is Gabe, and she's consoling.

SPEAKER_01

She doesn't explain though. She just says, like, oh, that she's oh, what did she say? She's like, Oh, we just we just buried, we just buried my friend's brother or something like that. Like, and she's like, I'm kind I'm kind of just like spent, I'm exhausted. And she gets the the two waters, and and Ruth is like, I didn't know he was your friend, and she admits that he was the foot guy.

SPEAKER_00

And they're just kind of like, Oh wasn't David like oh shit, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and so like she gets the two waters and she's like, Yeah, I'm just I'm just gonna go to bed, like I'm I'm done. And so you don't really like she has two waters, but you're still kind of like, alright, like maybe she's just thirsty, she's planning to like not come out of her room. I don't know. I mean it's not like the most weird thing to bring two waters to your room, but then when she gets back to her room, we see that Gabe is in her bed and he's just crying, you know, and she's just trying to console him, and that's where the episode ends.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. I feel horrible for Gabe's character. I feel like he's just like originally he was just like a high school kid looking for some ass, and then he got caught up in like for some toe, yeah. For some toe. He got caught up in a rumor. He seems like he could be nice, but he wanted to play off as cool instead, and now he's like going through some like real shit. Like, yeah, I don't know. I I kind of just feel for Gabe a lot. He's one of those characters that like I know he was like shitty in the beginning, but I like his character a lot.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was it was it was definitely something to to reconcile, if that makes sense. Because the last time that we saw him, you're like, fuck that dude. Yeah, now you're empathizing with him, and in that same tone, it's like you can empathize with Claire because he I don't know if they said it, but I get the impression that he was her first.

SPEAKER_00

And so Oh yeah, he was because then she had the whole sing song about it.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like you remember her whole little like dance number?

SPEAKER_01

Her little dance routine in the kitchen. Yeah. And so, but you see that she's trying to comfort him in his time of need, but like this is the guy that hurt you. And so it's hard because you know, she's she's like 16. She doesn't have the wherewithal of an adult. And I don't know. So it's like I don't agree with how she put herself out there for him, but I can empathize with with the fact that she did it. I get it, you know, I get it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And we can also make a note and appreciate the way that um a child's dead body wasn't exploited in this episode, although the story was about a dead child.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, I definitely appreciate the way that the episode handled the boy's death. It's like even though this is obvious make-believe and scripted, it's still it's still a little bit reassuring, you know, and nice that they didn't exploit a boy's death. And they could have. I don't know if I'm making sense. No, you are.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

So do you see do you see my next note with Brenda?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I agree. Um, Lisa made a note saying, is the pretend cancer really the most fucked up thing Brenda has done, or maybe just that day?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because he accuses her of saying that that's the most fucked up thing that she's done, but like it's Brenda, so pick a dick.

SPEAKER_00

You know, he signed up for this.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

He can willingly leave this relationship and he's not, and he knows that she's a character.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I mean, I I think that the cancer part was kind of fucked up, but other than that, I was like, it was fucked up. I was on board with her.

SPEAKER_00

It was, you know, if she told him, like, hey, I'm gonna do this.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, yes, I was just gonna say that. If she had just said, hey, you know, XYZ, I feel like that would have just been like so much better. But if she was me, I would have been like, Alright, cool, like, let's do it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but she clearly has an issue with communicating, which is so prevalent throughout the series so far.

SPEAKER_01

So, my next note is that I noticed that this is the first death since the pilot that has directly affected of Fisher. And uh it's still a little bit six degrees of separation because it's Gabe's brother, but it still affects one of them because they still have a connection. So I thought that was interesting. Nate Nate Sr. is back. Was he in the last episode?

SPEAKER_00

I can't remember if he was in the last episode, but I just feel like we haven't had a flashback with him and talking.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so the episode is titled Life's Too Short, and at least twice during the episode I heard the clock ticking. And the first time I watched it, I didn't hear it, but the second time I watched it, I caught it. And it's so subtle, but it's like a reminder of just you know how how I guess fast or you know how it could end at any given time.

SPEAKER_00

So it's a little bit morbid, but we kind of signed up for that watching this show anyway.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. If anybody else has any thoughts about the clock ticking or anything on this episode, this episode was hard. When when I first put it on, I like not even one minute in, and I'm already texting you, like, oh my god, oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

I know. I saw that text and I was like, fuck, now she went through it. Yeah, or she's about to go through and she knows it, you know.

SPEAKER_01

And by the third watch, because I I watched it like once to watch, I watched it the second time to do like notes, and then I watched it the third time just before we recorded, and the third time I had a fast I just fast-forwarded through the opening. I was like, I don't even want to watch this again. I know it's fake, I know it's make believe, I know exactly what happens, but I don't want to see it.

SPEAKER_00

Like, it's just well, that's exactly how I felt about failed. That's exactly how I felt about like episode three, episode four with the bread maker. Yeah, I I couldn't watch that scene again, like once or maybe possibly twice. I don't know if I remember seeing that as a kid. Maybe I saw that as a kid, I think I saw that as a kid. So the two times or the one time was enough. I couldn't do it the third time or a second time. Like, I just I remember realizing what episode that was and fast-forwarding right for it when I was watching it recently, couldn't do it, but I completely understand. I'm now wondering, and I think it's too late to go back because I don't want to do that to myself, but going forward, I'm going to try to notice if the clock ticking is something that happens when either Nate Senior makes a visit, or if it's something that happens right when any character dies, or if this was just unique to the episode.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I want to see if this is a recurring thing. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But with that, um, we touched upon all of our notes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I know there's one final one, but we kind of did talk about that in the scene.

SPEAKER_01

My my last note is just about like Ruth and Senior. And is is it like Ruth absolving herself and giving her per herself permission to be happy? I mean, so we did touch on that, but yeah, like her and just a thought that I had. Um and so I talked about my quote that got me six feet under, and but my gravigger of the week was Claire. Just I know he's you know the guy that you lost it to and all that, but but go away. Like, don't get sucked back in.

SPEAKER_02

It's not gonna end well. She's doing, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's not gonna end well. It's just uh clear.

SPEAKER_00

She's on her right of passage. Yeah, I mean it's so hard because like that, you know, being a teenage girl is not easy, but no, I was gonna say, been there done that, don't want to do it again. I learned my lessons.

SPEAKER_01

I I get it, and that and that's the thing, right? She's gonna have to learn her own lessons because it doesn't matter, like you you could tell her, you can warn her, you can try to give her advice, but she's gonna have to learn her own lessons. So that's it. That is it. Yeah. Um, but now that this is like the second week that we have quotes that got us six feet under and gravedigger of the week, if you have one of those, send it to us. Tell us who is yours. Why? Because excuse you, Stella. What's wrong with her? Um, yeah. I would like to what's wrong with you? It's not even sneezes, she's like, I don't know what she's doing. Um yeah, if you have if you have them, like send it to send it to us because we would we would love to read about that or or know about that. Um however, the next episode is called The New Person, I believe. And yeah, we'll be doing that one soon. But until then, as always, we ask that you drink responsibly and you don't drink and drive, and you we ask that you we humbly ask that you consider supporting the show financially, whether on Patreon or buy me a coffee. On Patreon, tier start as low as one dollar a month, and you will unlock bonus features, and so that's awesome. You know, really cool, and you will love it there. And you can connect with us at sassinsips.com. You can link on over to all of our socials that don't currently exist, you except for Twitter, but you can send us like messages and stuff, email, voicemail, all that. And then until until the next time, don't drink and drive. I said that, but I had like a lot of wine, so um it's fine because you're in bed, so it's okay. I yeah, I'm I'm still dressed, but I'm in bed. I gotta go get these kids like something. I'm just gonna tell them, like, I'm going to bed. They'll be fine. They're old, they're fine. They're they're responsible. And until next time, I'm Lisa. I'm Brittany. And we are out of here.

SPEAKER_00

Bye y'all. Well, if this ever picks up.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you know, maybe one day somebody will throw us throw some money at us. Yeah. We might have to switch on over to OnlyFans, but oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

Coming back from the hot tub.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. Like it electrocuted, but you know, we can make it work.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god.
