Hey, and welcome to this episode of Sass and Sips, the podcast where we watch and re-watch and we drink and we dish and we sip and we sass. I am one of your hosts. I'm Lisa. I'm Britney. And today we're going to be talking about episode two, The Will from Six Feet Under. Hey girl. Hello, hello. What are you drinking tonight?

SPEAKER_01

Oh shit, I forgot my drink.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_01

I just looked at your drink. Books and things and no drink, like nothing. No way to go. Well, when I go right downstairs to get something, um, what am I gonna get? I have a red and I have a white. What do you think?

SPEAKER_00

Didn't you just have uh oh I I guess you finished it on the pre-show. Yeah you gotta get it. I know.

SPEAKER_01

I just like I I have my empty glass, like there's nothing in it. I have airwine.

SPEAKER_00

You have air wine, yeah. All right, well, you're gonna go get your drink. We'll we'll pause for that. And I still have I brought the bottle, so I still have my uh yellowtail. So clink, a little air clink. I'll just say clink.

SPEAKER_01

I'm so excited about this episode. Yeah, this is like the real shit now, like this how the episode goes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so uh by the way, you guys, we we noticed that sometimes we really go off on tangents, so we have yeah, just a little. We have added a new feature called our Patreon pre-show. So if you are a Patreon patron, you that show is already available to you, and um we talk about just the stuff that we don't talk about, we no longer will talk about on the regular show, including all the crazy drama with my neighbors and possible tales of drugs and parents.

SPEAKER_01

So yeah, so a lot of the times um Lisa and I just lead like such busy lives, and like it's like semi-sarcastic, semi-not. Like, should I say that very sarcastic? Yeah, like I said, psychastic. You know when you say something and it hears differently, it hears differently. I don't need alcohol the way that I'm talking right now. Um well, maybe you just had too much already. Maybe I did, but a lot of the times, Lisa and I catch up over this podcast, so all of our like pre-show banter is just us catching up, and now it's actually a pre-show. Yeah, if you enjoyed listening to the dumb shit that goes on in our lives, basically, uh, and just our conversations, definitely check that out. Otherwise, yeah, let's get into episode two.

SPEAKER_00

And also, we we ran our contest that we had posted um on social media, and so we just want to congratulate the winner and you know, thank you for participating. And you know, I don't know if it's a privacy thing, so we're not gonna shout you out here, but thank you, and we really, really appreciate you and everyone else who participated. So uh yeah, just wanted to get that out there. Yeah, I know, goodies, swag, stuffs, yep, and everybody likes a gift card, so but yes, um, but as for this episode, the title is the will, so it's pretty self-explanatory, but but there's more. Do you want to do the synopsis or do you want me to do it?

SPEAKER_01

Uh yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I said two things. You said you sent me things. No, I said I said two things, and you said yeah. Oh, I thought you said I sent you things.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't send you anything. No. So from episode two, uh, our synopsis states that Nate offers to lend a casket to the family of a man who left them with loads of debt. And so, should we run through the episode? You want to talk about your thoughts going into this episode, like just seeing the title and then clicking episode two. What were you thinking this episode was going to be about?

SPEAKER_00

Um, so obviously I figured it would have something to do with his will, but to be honest, I didn't really give it that much thought beforehand. I was just really excited to watch it and just kind of see how the episode flowed. And because I remember you saying about how sometimes the pilot uh follows one flow, and then the subsequent episodes can be different. So I really didn't have too much expectation, except like what kind of shenanigans were gonna ensue from the reading of the will.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah. And me watching this episode again and not having watched this episode for a couple months to a couple years, I really forgot when I watched the series. Um, I kind of almost forgot that it was going to open, not showing the family. Yeah, yeah, I didn't expect what you're just saying. Like episode one, like opened with like Nate Captain. It was just all them. Yeah, yeah. So when I opened, and I I see this like man like just spitting bullshit and jumping on the diamond board. I'm like, wait, who is he again? Yeah. I'm like, oh yeah, like I forgot, like this is how the show works.

SPEAKER_00

I I I thought it was very law and order of them, you know, the bait and switch.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it really was. And I really do like that flow of the episodes. It really just like it's a good way of leading into hey, like our main cast works in a funeral home. Right.

SPEAKER_00

But it it also perfectly um like showing the dead person's last yes, it's it's like a it's a perfect way to incorporate them into the episode without spending too much time because now you know you got a glimpse of who they were and how the person died, and that's all you need to know. And at least you got a little look at it, because then when they come into the funeral home, it's it's more than just nameless faces, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So, like in this episode, um, in the small like snippet before the episode actually begins, where we see like the person dying. We well, his name is Charles Swanson. So when we see Charles Swanson die, we're we're learning that he's running some kind of like pyramid-y type scheme or like some like bullshit scheme to get money from his friends. We find out that his wife, um, well, that he has a wife and they have a child, and she's just like infatuated with him, or like even like looks up to him for like his yeah, she's totally in love with him. Yeah, but she like values his business ethics so much, and so it's just it's funny as we like learn later in the episode, like even just the wife's storyline and how like her her character arc and how she changes over the episode, but like we don't have to have that like little corny, like dry introduction, like, oh, and that's my wife, and let that take up 10 minutes of time. Like, it's yeah, it was it was perfect. We'll learn on our own. But I like how in the show, like you were saying, like we learn a lot on our own through what other characters experience, yeah. And so, right in the beginning of the show, like I said, we learned that like at a pool party, a man named Charles Swanson's trying to sell some scammy idea, it's called Beauty Vision, to his friends, and his wife tries to explain that the idea like to his friends is really not like some pyramid scheme, but it is, and so he's trying like Charles is trying to just sell this lifestyle, but like and he sells one.

SPEAKER_00

One of his friends is like, I'm in, and he's like, Okay, $45,000, please.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and then he's kind of like a group of guys around him. Think about the money he could be making, and he's just showing. I mean, like, we've all seen people try to upsell something, upsell a lifestyle, yeah. And so you need to put on like this giant facade. That's what he was doing.

SPEAKER_00

Like big house, giant yard, they totally rent the house. Fancy as all hell. I mean, this is definitely not some one-room set.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

He lights a cigar, he he's fit, he jumps, he like dives off of a he does like the the beautiful dive into the pool, except he never comes back up.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and then they all start to notice. One of the guys was like, Is that blood? And so I mean, like he learned that immediately, like it's really nice how they don't say it and they don't treat like the viewer. By they I mean like the directors don't treat and the writers like they don't treat the viewer like they're stupid. Like we could put two and two together that like he dove, he hit his head on the bottom of the pool, and like he's not alive anymore.

SPEAKER_00

So I have a a silly, maybe stupid question, right? Because I know when you swim and you're in a pool that is not or or anywhere really where the water is not that deep, and they tell you no diving because of literally that reason. But when you dive, you put your hands out and tuck your head. How would how do your hands not touch before your head? Do you where where was his arms?

SPEAKER_01

Maybe when he like hit the water, like once he felt like his body was in, his arms went out to to swim back up. I don't know. I don't think about that. I don't know. I thought you were gonna go in a different direction. Like you were looking at houses, and that one house had a pool, but the pool was like four feet and had a diving board.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I thought you're gonna be like, I the pool could not have I know that pool could not have been four feet. That lady was off of fucking rocker. I'm sorry, the pool could not be four feet with a diving board. Yeah, that'd be like my pool having a diving board. Why? Yeah, just no, just knowing ground and everything. I thought you were gonna go that route and be like, Yeah, well, the the one that we loved, the one that you went and stalked the lady.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I sat in the past and I stared at them.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, you never did such a thing.

unknown

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

The one that we had to write a fucking letter to in everything fucking bullshit for nothing. That pool was beautiful, had a diving board, was like 12 feet deep. It was like your well, it wasn't as big as your pool, but it was like your pool. But yeah, but that's the thing I don't get. Like I dive into I dive into pools I should not dive into, but my your head is tucked between your arms. Yeah, how the fuck do you break your neck? You think about that the next time you dive into your pool.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe they were drinking a little bit too, and maybe the alcohol bout him. Although I feel like he would like if they were having like scotch or whiskey or something like that, and I mean, definitely he would definitely just like make brown water, like you know, I mean, just to like it sound like he's drinking, but not so that maybe he's still stay sober and like sell his shit.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, I'm definitely not advocating for anyone to dive where it says no diving. I'm just saying, in theory, how does that happen? Maybe I'm an idiot, maybe I'm missing something, maybe I really I mean, clearly it happens because we've had to make signs for it. So obviously it happened. I just don't get it, but whatever, we'll move on because I'm not gonna figure that out right now.

SPEAKER_01

No, I don't, who knows? But either way, the man's dead, and now we're back rest in peace, yeah. Well, actually, we're not even at the funeral home yet, but we're on now um the Fisher family storyline, and you know, like the characters that aren't Fishers that are associated with them. So our actual episode, our base layer of the episode starts off with David and Keith, and they're snuggling in bed, and David rolls over and he sees like a vision of his father looking at him. And from what I remember, that was a dream. And then he woke up and said the father, the father is like, which one of you well oh no, keep going.

SPEAKER_00

He David is freaked out, and the father's like, No, no, no, keep going. I want to see how this works.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but then when David actually wakes up, he's in Keith's bed, but Keith's not in his bed, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he's and he's trying to run out, and um Keith is like, Oh, I didn't wake you up because you looked, you know, peaceful, like you look, you know, and they mention a meeting later, and David says, No, don't worry, I'll be there. And then we move on to Nate, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Nate and Brenda, and so Nate is getting a massage from Brenda because she's in the Seuss. An actual massage, we think, yeah, yeah, who's trying to figure out like where he's wounded, and so Brenda, it was mentioned in last episode. Uh-huh. Uh Brenda's parents are like there's only been one episode. Okay, yeah, yeah, I know, I know. But like, I'm trying to like, I didn't want to reveal something that's maybe in like the next episode, like the following episode that I remember from my memory. So, anyway, so pretty much like she has like that innate ability to, or not even ability, just like annoyance to try to figure out other people's like psychological problems. So she's trying to find out, like, she's trying to get like deep into Nate's like psyche, and so she's just doing her bullshit there.

SPEAKER_00

And then so you mean people with psychology degrees are bullshit? Thanks, Britt. She doesn't have a psychology degree, her parents do. Yes, but you're saying psychology is bullshit.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I have a degree in psychology.

SPEAKER_00

I would say that. I know I'm fucking with you. Thanks, Lee. You do too. I know that that's why it was funny.

SPEAKER_01

My god, yeah, no, but I mean, like, I'm sure if like both of your parents are psychologists and they've been like psyching you out your whole life, right? That it's just gonna become like this unconscious thing you do to people, and I'm sure like that feeds into her whole storyline of like how she can't hold steady relationships because she just tries to break down her like partners.

SPEAKER_00

I wish people could see your face right now. That was so good. You doing your imitation of her was so good. I wish I snapped a picture, and that's the next Instagram post. Yeah, except I didn't snap a picture. So next time I'll be ready.

SPEAKER_01

And yeah, so that's that.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, but you get a little snippet of them together, and and and then the next thing you see is them returning, well, the brothers returning back to the house. And um, I know that I know which one is David and which one is Nate, but I always have to make a conscious decision to say the right name. It's Nate, he brings the peaches before we go. Yeah, yeah, no, no, no. But because I keep wanting to first of all, I keep wanting to call David Dexter because it's very hard to see him in any.

SPEAKER_01

Last season I was calling Pia Sia because she looks like Sia. So David Dexter. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's like yeah, and so when they get back, Nate is like, hello, David, you know, or whatever. He's he's making fun of him. But he brings, yeah, he brings his whatever, his fancy fruit, and um and it hurts Ruth's feelings. Yeah, she gets like butthurt by it, like she gets butt hurt by the stomach. I know she's watching her peaches, and she's like, My peaches aren't good enough. Like, chill.

SPEAKER_01

Who fucking said? And he's like, relax. I'm like the master of the produce. You remember me, my co-op in Seattle? Yeah, like throughout the show, Claire just like blurts some shit to her brothers that's just so funny and so real because you know, like a younger sister would say that shit. Oh, it's yeah, I don't know. I I really love her as a character, yeah. But yeah, Ruth Ruth just gets her butthurt by the peaches, she gets her t-shirt, and it comes out every single time.

SPEAKER_00

It comes out of nowhere, she's just doing something so mundane, she's watching washing peaches, and then it's like, so my fruit's not good enough.

SPEAKER_01

Whoa, like she didn't just like turn around and just do like a blood curdling scream and then just go back to washing peaches. Yeah, was it like throw them across the kitchen like she did with the pot roast? Okay, well, I mean, like what like what would you wouldn't you cook a pot roast to just throw it to?

SPEAKER_00

No, pot roasts are expensive. I know you don't eat meat, but a pot roast what if it was like a translation price, like 2001 pot roast price. I don't know. Depends on how clean my floor is because then we'll pick it up and eat it.

SPEAKER_01

Then you could do like the hold on, I'm remembering the two characters plus Joey. It was Rachel, it was you thinking about the cheesecake?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yep, mama's little cheesecake. Yeah, wait, hold on. It was it was Rachel in the hallway. Yeah, it was Rachel and Chandler. Okay, I knew it was Chandler. She he likes knocks the plate out of her hand or something, so then she knocks it. Yeah, and they're just sitting there, and Joey comes and he has his own fork in his jacket. Yeah, what are we eating? Yeah, yeah, that'd be me. I don't carry around a fork yet, though.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it would be not to self. It would be you with your imaginary fork and Stella with her mouth.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, maybe fighting. She's a good helper, she'll but yeah, but yeah, so anyway, we don't have any peaches or cheesecake at the moment. Oh, actually, I did make a cheesecake last night. Yeah, I don't know how much is left though. Savages.

SPEAKER_01

But your burn on the floor will taste better.

SPEAKER_00

I had a slice and then I went to bed. Well, I mean, you know, like I mean, we all had a slice, but then like afterwards, when I went to bed, I hear a knock on my door and it's Nelinda and she's like, You made cheesecake? Can I have some? I don't even know if there's any left because she was the last one to get to it.

SPEAKER_01

So yeah, I didn't even check today to be honest, but anyway, David then has a meeting with the widow, yeah, with Charles's widow. So like the wife in the beginning situation, and to make like the funeral arrangements, like she knocks on the door crying with like her baby, yeah, and yeah, and so she starts describing like her late husband as like dynamic and that he drove like the biggest and fastest car. And so I mean, like, in response to David's question, which like when they were deciding what casket to get, like, David says, like, what kind of car did he drive? Right, he's trying to figure out what kind of person he was, exactly, so that he could sell her the right coffin, and that like not really like I thought about it afterwards, like that's a really good like salesman question of anything, really, like watches, caskets, like houses. I don't know. Like when you're first time it's like what kind of car do you drive?

SPEAKER_00

And that may be like a good indication of like how how um I don't know, like how much there well, how you how you see yourself, yeah, exactly. Exactly. So well, I think that it's ideally it's a great way to tell people how you see yourself, but in reality, it might just be a great way to tell you what you can afford. Yeah, yeah, that's that's because the car that I drive is not the car that I'd like to drive, yeah. So, but my wallet is like, no bitch, you know, so not that I have a bad car, just not my preferred car. Yeah, don't say anything mean, like maybe it you are like this. No, my car is actually honestly, it's it's great, it's just had I had my pick, it's not what I would have picked.

SPEAKER_02

Gotcha.

SPEAKER_00

I had to do a more responsible thing and buy, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, like have you ever seen um like I've seen them at work before, and I'm sure you have too. When people like put these like signs on the copier, like pet it before you print anything, like treat it nice, buy it dinner. Yeah, so um the couple schools that I've worked at like this year are copier is like I actually had a full discussion on my lunch break with um, because like one of our copiers was in our like lunch, like teacher's lounge, lunch era. And the guy fixing it, it was my first day at this new school. And the guy fixing it was having such a hard time fixing it. And he had such a rough day that day. Like he he got his phone stuck in like the door of like his box truck, so it cracked. And he was like, I heard him like on the phone bitching to his girlfriend. He's like, I don't even know how I'm gonna get back. I don't have the directions. He was like a little bit of an older guy, so I'm like, okay, like I'm sure like he's gonna ask somebody like print out directions. So like when he got off the phone, he's like he's gonna go to MathQuist. Yeah, he was like, Don't work, don't be a teacher, you know, it's just gonna be like this kind of bullshit. And I was like, today is my first day. And he's like, I'm so sorry. And so I was like, everything's gonna be okay. Like, you're just having a rough day, it'll be fine. You know it's gonna turn around, like, tomorrow can't get any worse, right? So, but that's what I mean. Like, our printers would be and our copying machines, like the whole fucking unit would break so often. And so in the first school I was working at, we had this sign on it that was like before, before, like it said something like before you yell at it and scream fuck at it, like buy it dinner first, like don't make too much noise near the copier, it won't print. Well my god, head it and say thank you after every paper that comes out, like because like they they get so sensitive, they break all the time, and like even though there are directions on it, like how to fix it, like nobody knows how to fix it, and then to get maintenance in there, like not a not angry maintenance man, is like so difficult. Yeah, so I could imagine. I mean, I could imagine how much use it has all day, also. Yeah, I mean, like I'd go in there and I'd print out like a hundred sheets, right? I mean, like if I had 20 students and if they're getting like five page packets, that's a hundred pages right there. So, and then I have my copy, and so I mean, like, and that's just one person for one subject right for one day. So, yeah, so basically, like, don't yell at your car, thank it after every mile you drive.

SPEAKER_00

Listen, she may be a little high maintenance, but she's a good old bitch, so yeah, and she she wants her Honda Blue. I'll give her her Honda Blue. She just whatever she wants, you know, I have to do it.

SPEAKER_01

So oh my god, gotta make a cocktail, you and I called Honda Blue Honda Blue.

SPEAKER_00

Well, actually it's called iced tea, but with like food dye in it. I mean, technically it's called Asian blue, that's the name of it, but I call it my Honda Blue. Yeah, it could be it.

SPEAKER_01

Honda Blue just, you know, it has that personal charm on it. Asian blue sounds a little more exotic. Yeah, I don't know. Like, what would what would the flavor of Asian blue be? Because I feel like Honda blue. Anything we want, yeah, you're right. What would Honda blue taste like? Oh my god, like blue raspberry, like blue flavor, or are we doing something completely different?

SPEAKER_00

Well, isn't that what Asian blue could taste like then? That's true.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe like an electric lemonade. That's what I'm thinking. Minus the excessive sugar.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, please.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, because we don't need that headache. We'll be dead the next day.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. We'll be like, why are your head in a toilet?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, the Asian blue.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, I could see you saying that to Alex and him being like, You drank fluin. Like Lisa, I I I know like you he probably would ask me that too. Yeah, he'd be like, What? The alcohol's not strong enough anymore. Like, yeah. Oh my god. Anyway, so the the wife says that he drives to get some fastest BMW. So David's like, here, spent $9,000 on this like coffin.

SPEAKER_00

He's like, What did he call it the Rolls Royce or something like that of the of the coffins or something? Something like that. He he was like, This is the best one, buy it.

SPEAKER_01

She's like, Okay, and then uh, and this is what I mean by like the way that she was talking about her husband. She was just like so in awe of his accomplishments, not knowing um yeah actual secret past, and so we move on from that scene for now, yeah, because then we see them at the will reading, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, actually, yeah. So they they go to hear um seniors will be read, and he leaves the business to the boys because it's Fisher and Sons. Yeah, and then he leaves his fire here, yeah. He leaves a trust for Claire so that she could go to college, and then he describes his blackmail beyond the grave, yeah, yes, and then Ruth gets all the money, but nobody nobody is happy. No, but then when they're leaving, Ruth defends senior, and she says, Well, she she basically declares that they'll all be happy and maybe she'll move to Florida. I was like, Okay, I mean if it's just that simple, like all right, she said he knew what he was doing. If you think so, I mean maybe he did, I don't know. I didn't watch enough episodes yet, but maybe he did. Oh, and then David sends Nate, they have to go collect a body, so David sends Nate to do it because Rico has something to do, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like, I it's something I can't get out of, and so like we know that Nate has like this fear of like the dead. I mean, like, understandably, like because a lot of people do, and like he didn't want to work in this business, right? This is why he like went to Seattle and did his own thing there, and he's not how David is like so involved in the funeral business, so yeah, we see that in like the flashback in the first episode, too. And I I think again in this episode we see the flashback. And so um Nate has to go pick up, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Because Dave, like they're all like, I can't do it, I can't do it, I can't do it. And Nate is telling him, I'm sorry, David tells him, You won't have this business now, you're gonna have to work. And so he's like, Okay, you know, what do I do? But then Rico is like, Don't worry, like, just give me give me a few and I'll help. So, yeah, so he ends up going with him to help. But Nate has to drive home in the van with the dead body, and that's when right because they well, they go, they go pick it up, and then as Rico and Nate, thank you, are moving it, the sheet comes off. Oh my god. He's like, Yeah, angel lust, and you're like, Oh damn, okay. He's like, That happens a lot.

SPEAKER_01

He's like, Yeah, it happens, and so that's something that I learned. Like, I I didn't know that could happen. I did not know that either. Like, that's not common knowledge of like what the body does after death. Yeah, no, I mean, we all know like the most extreme is decay, but like the I don't know, two, three hours after death, like what could happen, like the noises, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

We learned that also in the next in the next part, yeah. Because Rico has to go, and Nate is driving home with the body in the van, and all you hear is gurgling sounds, yeah, and like and then Brenda calls and she's like, Hey, come meet me for a drink, 15 minutes. Um, he does, and he tells the valve demanding though.

SPEAKER_01

She's like, No, meet me here and here now, and he's like, Um, I have somebody in the back of my van. He's dead, go wait, he don't mind. Yeah, oh my god, it's so funny because he like ballet parked and he was like he's like parking the shade, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Clearly, he was there for more than 15 minutes. When he gets back in the van, you could tell from his facial expression that the van smells, and when he gets back, yeah, when he gets back, then he says how the the body shit itself, and apparently that's a thing that's a thing.

SPEAKER_01

Like, I think during this part, David says some shit like you have to stuff cotton up, like he said something about his father, like you didn't have to stuff cotton up your father's ass, right? Right, right, right, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So we learn all about the dead guy smells, sounds, and even the shit. Where you have to plug but what I said, where you have to plug, yeah, yeah, just so like all stuff that I probably could have lived the rest of my life not knowing, but yeah, but they I mean whatever, you don't I don't feel like anything much happened at their lunch, you know, they're just having like a little date, getting to know each other type shit, but yeah, and then Claire ends up oh before Claire, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Wait, um so actually after like Nate and Brenda are like at lunch having drinks and stuff, but Bobby's still in the van. We get back to Charles' wife. So, like the the wife from like the first scene, she's back again, they're talking about finances, and she finds out that like her husband was just like extremely like he put both of them extremely in depth, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because it was always all a fucking scam, and he hid everything from her.

SPEAKER_01

And so I forgot, I think it was Nate who was talking to her at this point, maybe, or or it could have been David, and there was a question about like, did you not know like did something about their house? And she was like, We would always move from house to house, and they were getting bigger and better. I never would have thought. Yeah, she thought it was because they were doing well, yeah, because he was running from everyone, and so now basically, like what she's saying is like, I can't afford this coffin, and I can't afford like this giant service and everything. What's the cheapest option?

SPEAKER_00

Right, right. And Nate comes up with an idea to rent it, which in theory is not a bad idea because they'll cremate him and he could just rent the coffin and still keep up appearances, supposedly, supposedly, you know, whatever, make it make everybody happy, right? Yeah, um, the the funeral home won't lose the money for the coffin, she'll keep up appearances, and nobody has to know whatever. Yeah, then we learn that you can't do that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's apparently like by law something you can't do because of the fluids, according to Rico. Right, he was like, You can't do that, it's like against the law because of the body fluids, and Nate literally said what everybody was thinking like, why should that matter?

SPEAKER_00

Right, yeah, it was like it's not sanitary. What the fuck are they gonna cash the dead? Yeah, exactly. But it's true. I mean, granted, um, I wouldn't want to bury my loved one in a used casket, however, if it was disclosed, it and I could see and make sure it's not nasty, I might not be opposed to it. Yeah, hey, if it's cleaned, like it's going in the ground and it's staying there.

SPEAKER_01

It's not doing anything with a dead person in it. It's almost like you're just polluting, you know, like in like the Dumps and Stat Mountain in the Fresh Kills Dumps. They used to like dig the garbage under the ground and shit like that. That's pretty much what you're doing. You're throwing out like wood and body parts ground, yeah, and chemicals.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, what you're doing. Yeah, he's like their seepage. It's like ew. It's so weird. Yeah, guess you can put enough cotton up their ass. Yeah, right.

SPEAKER_01

I don't, you know what, like before we move on to um Claire and Cabe, right? Before we move on to like their storyline in the show, what like uh isn't like the formaldehyde and like the fluids that are supposed to like the embodiment fluids, like aren't they supposed to just stay? Like, how what do you mean like by seepage? Like, I guess that's not like a thing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, I guess it can leak out from the orifices, like the asshole, yeah. So then, like, what like or maybe the hole that they put it in through?

SPEAKER_01

I don't I mean, I don't know. So is embodiment only a temporary service where it lasts for maybe like a week and then it just kind of seeps out over time, and then eventually you just have like so, like if I were to open like a casket like 10 years later, right? With somebody who was like embalmed in it, would it still just be like bones?

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I don't know the answer of that for sure, but considering that you never hear of somebody being exhumed and them sitting in a flooded coffin, yeah, because aren't coffins also supposed to be like airtight, yeah, something like that. So I I can't imagine that even if there's seepage, it's a lot, but maybe but I don't know the difference of pressure. I mean, you're you're sick. Because you're right, because then yeah, but we but you're right because then it's like bones left, there's no nothing.

SPEAKER_01

That's what I'm saying. So, like either way, like it's gonna decay.

SPEAKER_00

I'm sure bugs are still gonna get in, but maybe it just doesn't seep out fast enough to make a giant mess and it evaporates or that's what I'm scorbs.

SPEAKER_01

Like, think about when you dive in a pool, right? Which is like really funny because it's like on topic to this episode. Even if you're diving, or not diving, but even if you're swimming all the way to the bottom of a six-foot pool, and not like an above-ground pool, but like even still, sometimes you feel it in above ground, you feel like a difference of pressure you can feel in your ears, right?

SPEAKER_00

So, like if you're being buried six feet under, maybe there's like a difference of pressure, but I would think that the pressure is from the water, not necessarily from the depth, the difference in yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I mean, like even when you're driving and you're going like up, yeah. Think about like snake hill. Like, sometimes my ears would pop, even like driving in Jersey. Sometimes like you go up like in elevation as you're driving north, and like my ears will pop, but like that's also like probably like hundreds of feet.

SPEAKER_00

This is only six feet. Yeah, that's true.

SPEAKER_01

I thought maybe like the pressure of like underground would have something to do with that.

SPEAKER_00

Well, if the dirt is on you, definitely, but yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. I don't like the air pressure, not like the right. I don't think the air pressure would have much to do with it at that point because I don't think it's deep enough. Because yeah, yeah, I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

They're like grave robbers, not that it's like well, you know what? I'm not into that culture, so I don't know how frequent it happens, but I know that people have in the past robbed graves, like that's like a thing we all understand because we've heard it or seen it somewhere. And I wonder if like people who actively rob graves like ever open up a grave and somebody's like embalmed and like look totally fine. Like, how fucking scary would that be?

SPEAKER_00

I don't know, that'd be crazy. Must know it anyway. Sorry, I keep getting like they were just buried like you know, a month ago, and so it's just like oh shit.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's like they're still alive, and like when you move them, they're like they feel like skin, like ew. Oh, next. Oh, yeah. So anyway, so Claren Gabe. Serial. Let's let's get into Claring Gabe. These are all questions that I could just Google. I don't have to like say my thoughts aloud, but I mean, I mean, like if maybe you guys are wondering that too. I don't know. I have a lot of questions about like the I I like learning about like the way that funeral businesses ran through the show.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so Claire, Claire and Gabe, they see each other at school, and he he like invites her out later that night. Yeah, so then they go out, they're sitting in his in her car, and you know, they're just smoking and talking, and basically, you know, they're like flirty flirty, and then they kiss, and then the next day they're together again, and it leads to what looks like sex, but some definite toe sucking.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so he asks for her to kiss his toe, and she's like, Are you serious? and he's like, Yeah, and so she gives in, and then kissing leads to sucking, and so that was going on in the back of her head.

SPEAKER_00

I'm kind of I'm kind of glad that they didn't show it so that she didn't have to do it, yeah, yeah. Me too. Just a thought was enough, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, like, I feel like I may be getting to a different level of this, but like Claire is obviously like she's probably not 16. I think she's supposed to be like portrayed as like 16, 17, yeah. And I mean, like her like the actress that plays her probably isn't, it's probably like 18.

SPEAKER_00

But I mean, that's a lot to ask a person, is to stuff on a topic.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, no, no, even if you're of age, like, but at the same time, this is HBO, like they have no problem with nudity and like explicit content, right and just we're like intertwining that with like a storyline and just like making it like a like a Thursday night show, like nothing's crazy, you know. Yeah, so it's just your average Tuesday, yeah. It's just nice, like in comparison to something like Euphoria, where they're having like even though they're like the actual actors or adults, I'm I'm not like giving anything away, but like they have like the the characters are supposed to be in high school and they're like clearly doing disgusting shit, like showing nudity, and like you're thinking about I mean the the actors definitely not that's what I'm saying, but in the storyline, it's just like white, okay, yeah. So I just like that they're like HBO followed that route in this show just to compare it to HBO shows and how times were different, but yeah, so anyway, they're doing that thing, she sucks his toe, and then later on, that kind of follows her, yeah, as sad as it is.

SPEAKER_00

Um going back to Ruth, the boys had gotten like a little peeved at her because she talks about the hairdresser and she was going hiking, like the man that she was having an affair with, yes, yeah, and she was gonna go hiking with him. His name is Hiram, but she tells him that their their relationship feels like something on a sex channel, but he wants to take her to Costa Rica. He he seems like he seems like he genuinely cares for her, yeah, but she was just not having it.

SPEAKER_01

Um the thing is that like she was kind of okay with it. It was David who wasn't having it, and he said some bullshit to her, and she got really upset with him and slapped him.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, oh yeah, but like good for her, because first of all, David shouldn't be talking shit about anybody, like David can't even be honest about who he is yet, so he needs to reserve the judgment, especially since he obviously doesn't want it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's like even even with um even with Keith, he's still not honest about who he is, so it's not even that like he's still trying to conceal his sexuality around his family, like especially because like wasn't really accepted during that time, but it's like even with like the person that he's in a relationship with, he can't even open up, which is so so and Keith obviously feels about him, yeah. Oh no, no, no, for sure, and that's what I mean. Keith just shows so much love and affection towards him, and he's still like just wound up, and it doesn't seem like it's from the loss of his father at all, it just seems like that's David's character, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So, once again, no legs to stand on, but um later when Ruth comes back, but this is I mean, that's more to towards the end because well, okay, they have the funeral. I know we're we're jumping around a little bit, but they have the funeral, and they have another person who comes in because the father, which is the other dead guy that they went to pick up, Mr. Suarez, I believe, and they tell the son that they'll sell him the coffin, and then that's when that's when Nate finds out that you can't do it. But then basically they're like, Okay, well, would you agree to sign and stating that you know that it's used? So they they manage, they're not really happy. Well, Rico and David are not happy about it, but they go along with it so that the the funeral home doesn't lose all that money, yeah. But um but later towards the end of the episode, Ruth comes in and she sees because but they have sorry, I did it again, but they have the funeral for Swanson. Oh no, no, I'm sorry. You're right. Swanson. Swanson? Yeah. It's just her there. There's nobody else. Nobody else showed up. The only person who then shows up is some lunatic who's like, your husband owes me money. And they chase him out because they're like, this is this is not the time. She didn't even know. And she's, you know, she's just upset. She's sad. She's grieving. She's coming to terms with all of this bullshit that he was into. But then the next time you see her is when Ruth walks in on her jumping on the coffin, trying to get his watch off, because now she's fucking mad. She's going through the stages of loss right here.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, like I thought she was just like one of those like um like coffin jumpers or coffin crawlers, whatever they're called, like people who call like crawl into the coffin with their like deceased loved one. But and that's what I thought she was doing at first, and then she was like, I can't get his watch off. And then she put his watch in his ring, and then she like I was surprised she didn't spit on him, she just kind of like pushed him, and so that's when his arms weren't like perfectly like laying over his chest. Like how the whole thing was gonna fall down. Me too. I I like I felt all her emotion though. Like she did a good job.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, like, terrible for her character, but as an idea, she did a good job. Oh, back in David's life, his ex-fiance shows up, yeah. You know, she heard about the dad, and she showed up to you know, give her condolences. He ended up going out to eat, and she tells him that his dad knew the whole time, and that he understood why they couldn't be together. And David is like, he's in such fucking denial, and he's like, You want to get a hotel room and fuck? She's like, What? No, like yeah, she didn't she say like what's wrong with you? Yeah, yeah, because she knows that he's just you know, deflecting, like he's not for real. She was in a relationship with him, she she knows, and but at the same time, I mean he is drinking, he ends up missing his meeting with Keith. Keith, mean in meanwhile is looking for him, shows up at the house while Nate is like cleaning up the van, and he's like, Yeah, I don't know, call him on a cell. He's like, Yeah, I did that. He's like, All right, well, is he any good? And Keith is like, wait, what? He's like, you know, at racket ball. He's like, uh, yeah, he's gotten better. Yeah. Now he's like, you know, just tell him I'm looking for him. And David ends up showing up at his house. He makes up this whole fucking well, his apartment. He makes up this whole bullshit story about picking up a dead body and it wasn't ready. And I don't even remember the full lie. And Keith is like, Oh, okay, okay, yeah, come back when you decide not to lie. You shut the door. And he's like, Oh, like busted, yeah. But like, thank you, Keith, for like standing up for yourself. Yeah, yeah, because he's right. He fucking, I mean, he didn't have to lie. Why did he could have just called him and be up front with him? I'm sure Keith would have understood, but at the very least, don't lie, don't lie about it. You know, I mean, maybe omit the part where you said to go up to the hotel room and fuck, but other than that, maybe not lie. Nate goes to Brenda's, yeah, and they get into it, they're getting into it, yeah. And he finds out that she has not just a tattoo on her ass on her back, yeah. But it says Nathaniel, but it says Nathaniel, and he's like, Why do you have a tattoo of my name? And she's like, Well, it's not for you. All right, pause. What do you think about that? Give me your whole opinions on that based on that scene. Because he was really thrown off, and she was she's she makes a comment, something to the effect of like because he's like, Oh, like, who is he that you got a tattoo? And she was like, I would have done a lot more than that. I'm thinking that it was a husband or a relate or you know, a relationship that went bad, but not like what are the words like through no fault of its own, you know what I mean? Like maybe if maybe like her ex had passed away or something like that, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, or it could have been a family member, like worst case scenario, even a kid, but you know, it's like they don't say who it is, but it's obviously someone she cared for. But I have to say, in this scene, I give her a lot of credit, and I even wrote that down because Nate gives her like the guy shit about the tattoo, like oh his name, and yeah, and she's just so cool and calm, but she's like, Yeah, and I would have done a lot more than that.

SPEAKER_01

The way that she came back with it kind of reminded me what it was, and I was just like uh uh. But it's not, I think that's revealed in season one, but not for a couple more episodes. But that is something that we'll be circling back to, okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the worst part I forgot that she had that. The worst part about this whole scene is like the fucking porn music. Yeah, the music is like I mean, I don't even fucking watch porn, but it's like I imagine that that's a soundtrack to all of them because it was so who fucking listens to this shit. This music is good for one thing and they stick it on all the porns, like HBO was trying to lure that crowd, I think.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, too bad they show like the toe sucking, then it could have just been like a full like soft porn. Oh my god, right? Well, I'm happy to because I wouldn't want to sit there and watch that. I definitely there are some episodes in the show where there are just something. I mean, I would have I'm gonna fast forward through that. That's something that I would have fast forward through.

SPEAKER_00

We get to the end of the episode, and Brenda calls Nate, and she and he's like, Yeah, I'm with I'm with David, and she's like, Oh, good, both of you. I want you to meet me. And again, she's demanding, and she's just like, Meet me here at this time, right now.

SPEAKER_01

Like, right now, and then Nate just drops and goes. Like, he just drops what he's doing again, second time in this episode, and just goes, yeah, like yeah, be like, here, little boy, here, good nick, good me.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, you're such a good boy. You pet us down.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's just the way that he responds to her, it's just so interesting. They barely know each other. Like, I'm sorry, maybe you could sleep with somebody twice, it doesn't mean you really know them.

SPEAKER_00

But to drop everything, I mean, either she's a really good lay or you really got nothing going on. Um just they're standing on the corner waiting for their next dictation, and she arrives on a bus. Yeah, bus pulls up, opens, and she's just standing there, like, yo, what kind of fucking I don't know how they do it in California, but in New York, you stand there, somebody's gonna yell at you. Even the bus driver's gonna be like, get your ass on the bus, get in or get out. There's there's no standing there. Come on, and nobody was trying to get out either. No, but she's just standing there in the doorway, like, hey, come on, welcome to my crib. Yeah, yeah. And the bus driver's like, all right, cool, crazy lady, do what you want, like nothing. And they're like, All right, come on, let's go. And they get on the bus, they don't pay. The bus is free. No, I'm pretty sure that you have to pay for a bus. Okay, at least in New York, you do, but they can pay bus tokens and they like slip one in. We didn't see uh for the bus tokens, yeah. They just happen to have bus tokens, they drive all the time, but they happen to have bus tokens. I'm sure of it. Maybe she paid for them. I mean, maybe let let's let's just run with that. Maybe she was like, I'm gonna pay for these two guys in advance. We're gonna go pick them up, and I'm just gonna stand here and make all your passengers wait while I lure them onto your bus. It's the whole like continuity errors in this episode that you're just on.

SPEAKER_01

I love it.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, it's just so unrealistic, but like the dive, the bus, yeah, yeah. And then they get on the bus and they're like, you know, like what? And she's like, This is the bus, the bus. You know, it took me a second. I was like, what? Like they'd never been on a bus before, they didn't know what the bus was. And I was like, Oh my bad, it's that bus.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, but like the way she was saying it, you would think that she would be smirking when she's saying it because that's the way it sounded. And so I was just like, the way you're saying it makes you sound like you're a piece of fucking shit that you try to spook them or like trigger them purposefully with without having good intentions behind it, like right. Meanwhile, she was trying to trigger them purposefully so that's why they can express their emotions and like kind of not get past it, but it well help them use this as a step to move on, yeah. Conquer it. Yeah, she had a purpose behind what she was doing in a positive way, not a negative way. Yeah, and they they sit, I mean, they they both look a little horrified. I mean, especially David. Literally turns to her and says, like, this is so fucked up, yeah. And then turns back to David and David's sitting down.

SPEAKER_00

David, like, can't even speak, yeah. But they sit down, and then Nate kind of puts his hand on David's, and you see that they're finally starting to process and come to terms, and it turns out she was right. Brenda was right about the bus, it was a good thing, and you see in the the scenery going by like all these good memories now, and then you know, like that's where it ends. But I thought I thought it was a nice way to end the episode. I thought it was a really weird thing to do, like in general, and especially that they weren't expecting it. But then again, if they were, would they have gotten on or gone?

SPEAKER_01

Maybe her parents are like they have like an extremist approach to psychology, and maybe that maybe they've done that to her so many times when she was a kid that like that's her first instinct to do something like that to somebody.

SPEAKER_00

And she was trying to like break well, it's almost like flooding, you know. What do you mean? Like if you are scared of spiders, and so somebody dumps a shitload of spiders in your hand, you're like flooded with the thing that scares you. Got it. So it's like extreme exposure, and it's like, okay, you know, this time around, we're gonna see if we can hold on to them or or just look at the spiders for 10 seconds and then build build up to like holding them, maybe not holding them the first time, but you know, yeah, but it's it's a lot, it's it's ext it is extreme because it's not just well, there's the bus. Look, there goes your dad print. No, no, I'm just kidding. Like there goes your dad print on the front. Oh my god. But no, but you know, not just there goes the bus, but you're on the bus.

SPEAKER_01

Did they see him in that moment? Like you remember in the end of the last episode when Nate was like on his run and he stopped with his hands up and he saw his dad in the bus, like driving away. Yeah, um, did they? I forgot if they like if Nate saw his dad again. What do you mean? After that, yeah, like like in this episode, yeah, like in this scene too, when they were sitting on the bus. Like, did Nate see his dad sitting on the bench outside the bus?

SPEAKER_00

Or I don't think I think that there were memories, I believe.

SPEAKER_01

But not in this scene.

SPEAKER_00

No, no, no. I think there were memories of of the dad, but I don't know whose they were. I guess I just assumed they were David's.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, because I forgot there was something. I could be mixing up, yeah. Like this specific scene when like they were sitting on the bus with Brenda. I didn't know if they had a hallucination that like their father was there again, yeah. But either way, it was it was ballsy, powerful, but healing what she did, yeah. And I feel like her behavior so far, she's just very uh like risky, yeah, like risky in the sense of like people who like gamble like with lots of money on like a game that they don't know.

SPEAKER_00

That was a big risk to do that to to not just Nate, but David, she doesn't even know David. That's what I mean, right? But even for Nate, that's a big risk, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That's what I mean by like ballsy. Like, where do you come off doing something like this? And then, like, the way that Nate has been accepting like everything that she says just kind of rubs me the wrong way. I don't know, like the way that he's just so entrusting in her, which she says, like it's because I saw you at your weakest moment. She said that somewhere in like the last episode, this episode for sure. I guess.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, yeah, I don't, but I guess at the at the other end of that, she's not very invested, so if it all went sour, what did she lose? That's true. I mean, I don't know, but just from watching, I was like, damn, that's ballsy, that's a little cray cray for you, Brenda. Yeah, but I mean, overall, I did like the episode. I I kind of wish that we got a little bit more juicy shit out of the Fisher family, but I feel like okay, well, it's only the second episode, so like chill out. But um but I did like it. I did like it. The next episode is called The Foot, so I'm kind of like, okay, all right.

SPEAKER_01

Um okay. It's not like our last show where like the title was very much it followed like a specific pattern, like this the show doesn't really follow a specific pattern, yeah. So you know, excited for me about I know, excited for that. So we'll see if there's more porn music. Oh my god, I was gonna say question. Do you think that the characters in the beginning scenes? Do you think that beginning as in the beginning of this episode? Yes. Do you think that we're going to see anybody we know in the next ones, or do you think it's gonna be all strangers?

SPEAKER_00

Do you mean the opening scene? Yeah, my guess is that it's gonna be all strangers, like it seems like that's how they're gonna open the show. But I mean, who knows? Well, they know, you know, but yeah, yeah, no, it's okay.

SPEAKER_01

I just wanted to run that by you because I remember watching it for the first time and being like, oh, well, the first episode was about the dad, and that kicked off the show, but the second episode featured the first episode, right?

SPEAKER_00

And they also had the commercials and I love those commercials, I think. Yeah, but I can see them as simply a vehicle to tell us what morticians use in a you know in a light-hearted way.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was like, hey, like people watching the show probably know nothing about this field.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like what's wound filler? I didn't know. Uh, do you have any last words, final thoughts?

SPEAKER_02

Um, no, I was actually gonna less wishes for this episode.

SPEAKER_01

Um I do not I like how we're seeing the development of each character that we saw, minus the people in the beginning. I like how we saw just a little bit more about each of these characters, they get really like deep, and but that's obviously so like this this show has five seasons. Like, of course, we're going to get into the nitty-gritty of each character, but um, I like how a little bit more was revealed in this episode. And it's just like they're they're like pacing and progression. I really do like it. Is there any uh any episode? What am I saying? Is there any character that we've met so far that you're very interested in learning more about?

SPEAKER_00

I feel like David is gonna be the one to watch because right now David has a stick of his ass, yeah, and it's so bland, but I feel like he's the one who's gonna have the character development.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, he's one of the main characters, and like yeah, characters, you know, like of course he's gonna have like a very large development and like big unfoldings, right?

SPEAKER_00

But but that's what I mean. Like he's the one whose story, I guess what I mean, is the one I'm most looking forward to seeing unravel at this point, anyway.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I'd like to see more about his interactions with Keith and how Keith unravels more information about David, even like his family, the shit that Nate says about like when they were growing up and how that unravels a little bit more, too.

SPEAKER_00

Definitely. The next episode is called The Foot, The Foot, The Foot, just the just the one, I guess. Just the one foot, just the one. All right, girl. Episode two in the books. As always, thank you for listening. Thank you for spending time with us. If you'd like to support the show, you can head on over to SassinSips.com. We have all of our social links, all of our support the show links, whether you choose to do it financially or otherwise. Tell a friend, tell a friend that likes six feet under, tell a friend that likes drinking, tell a friend that likes dead people, just tell them. We'll be here waiting.

SPEAKER_01

Tell your neighborhood mortician. Yeah, tell them.

Yeah, that's a good idea. We should probably just start calling. Like, hi, you don't know us, but could you just tell us what happens with seepage? Can you tell me why this law was put into effect? Dang. As always, drink responsibly, do not drink and drive, and don't, and also maybe not dive where it says no diving. Oh, yeah, that's it. Read. Yeah, don't drink, drive, and please read. Yeah, please read the signs on the pool. And until next time, we are out of here. See you in episode three, guys. Bye bye.
