SPEAKER_03

Hi guys. Hey, we're back.

SPEAKER_02

Season three, Sass and Sips. Hey Sassin and Sips, I'm Brittany. I'm Lisa. And this season we're watching what we previously announced. Six feet under.

SPEAKER_03

Have you been following along? And it's not just the both of us here, Stella's here too. Oh, Stella is here, so all that hot breathing into the mic. Yeah, Stella Stella can't be alone.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Now, contrary to the last time we started this episode, about two hours ago. Oh my god. Um, just to fill you guys in, or actually, you guys can fill yourselves in. Um, on Patreon, we released episode zero of season three. You're listening right now to episode one. So there's two. Yeah. So in episode zero, we completely forgot our intro. We we didn't even get past the first scene. Oh my god. And we started going on tangents and tangent after tangent. Amazing conversation. I think that was my favorite episode we've ever done so far.

SPEAKER_03

We left so much. Um how many times did you spit out your wine? I yeah. Um speaking of wine, we have jam jar, non-nauseating sweet wine. Yes.

SPEAKER_02

Usually I'm not really a fan of sweets, but I really like this. Yeah, I pre-drink. Like a half a bottle. Oh, yeah, no, there's like barely anything left.

SPEAKER_03

So the dog is she's like laying on me. Yeah. And like licking her ass. I love it. She's needy. Umy, but no.

SPEAKER_02

Well, now we're on season three. We chose Six Feet Under. Lisa don't know the show, and I do.

SPEAKER_03

I don't. So as we tried to say, uh, Brittany's in the driver's seat.

SPEAKER_02

I am, and so I've seen Six Feet Under before. I've seen up to season like three, four. I can't remember, but I will be finishing the show before we finish the show on the podcast, so I could watch it a second time, and I'll know what goes on in Lisa won't. Just like last season when Lisa knew what happened on Clickbait, and I had no clue and I was coming up with like the crazy theories and everything. Like it's Lisa's. I can't wait to come up with the crazy theories. Do exactly that. And so, just to kick off what Six Feet Under is about, y'all can go to Google and read this, but I'm gonna do it for you. Um, laced with irony and dark situational humor, Six Feet Under approaches the subject of death through the eyes of the Fisher family, who owns and operates a funeral home in Los Angeles. And so we're immediately introduced to the main character and the father of the family, Nathaniel, right in the beginning of the episode. Right prior to the beginning of the episode, it actually starts off with a commercial, like a fake commercial. And what I love about the fake commercial is that right at the end of it, it does like the HBO like sign out where it's like the TV turns off and it's like the but these fake commercials show up all throughout the pilot and only the pilot episode. And the first fake commercial is advertising a new hearse, which is just so strange to see. Aw, at least.

SPEAKER_03

I took a picture of baby Stella and me, and she's like, leaning on you, like she's what what is it, the most um interesting man in the world?

SPEAKER_02

How you sitting. That's how Emmy puts her arm. I I have a husky named Emmy, and she like throws her arm on the couch like a person, just like hangs out and leans into it too. Like, how you doing?

SPEAKER_03

I'll post that picture for you guys with Britney's and Stella's permission.

SPEAKER_02

But anyway, the first commercial, one of four that we see throughout this episode that like divides the episode up really nicely, um talks about a new hearse, it's advertised like as if a new car is advertised and like you know, with like stereotypical like 90s, 2000s advertisement with like attractive women, and it's it's so strange to see like a hearse being advertised in that way.

SPEAKER_00

And so, right after like the fake like a sexy, yeah, that's what I mean, and like the woman was like caressing it, like well also, but I mean, we don't ever see commercials for hearses, exactly. It was just so odd to see that, and it's just it makes sense.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, the show's centered around a family that runs a funeral home, so seeing that first commercial um just kind of puts into perspective what you're about to watch. And so as it goes into the first scene of the show, right after that commercial ends, and it's like literally just a few seconds long, um, we see the main character, like I said, Nathaniel Fisher Singer, the father, and he's driving in the new hearse. Like they just connected the commercial to what's actually going on in the show. He's on the phone with his wife, Ruth. And Ruth's telling him, like, on the way to the airport to pick up our son Nate, Nathaniel Jr., they call him Nate. Um, pick up like soy milk for him because I don't know, like he's Well, she says she's I don't know what it's called, but pick up the milk made of soy. Yeah, which is dumb. And I I had previously said in the other episode something like this this sparked the dietary restriction tangent. Oh, yeah, no, I was gonna say like what Nathaniel Singer made a joke about. He was like, What if I just mix like calf milk and water? Yeah. Oh, I just thought that was really funny. And um, yeah, so he's picking his son Nate up from the airport because it's Christmas Eve. And so Nate came in from San Francisco to stay with his family over Christmas. Seattle, I think. Oh, Seattle, I'm sorry. Is it oh yeah, yeah, no, you're right. Yeah, he flew in from Seattle and um and he's you know, the family's getting rather gather. Um, in the same scene, while Ruth, the wife, is on the phone with her husband, we learn that their other son, who is not Nate, is also in the room. His name, his name's not introduced immediately. So, like, there's another person in the room that we could surmise as his son or their son, and his name is David. Why I was gonna say Daniel, what the fuck, man?

SPEAKER_01

It's a D name. Oh, so it's closed, yeah. And so Ruth is Stella, baby.

SPEAKER_03

Stella is trying to be front and center. Sorry, guys.

SPEAKER_02

And so Nathaniel Singer's on the phone in the hearse, smoking a cigarette. You know what we do when it was acceptable. Right. And Ruth can obviously tell he's smoking a cigarette. I mean, like, if you've ever been on the phone with somebody who's smoking a cigarette, you can tell you can hear like the drugs, you can hear the pauses, you can hear the exhale. And so she like picks up on this, and I mean, like, she doesn't want her husband smoking because she's like, you're gonna die. You're gonna have a slow, painful death if you continue to smoke cigarettes. She's she's on one hand, she's worried about the lung cancer, and then on the other hand, she's worried about the hearse smelling. Plus, you don't want to get the new hearse all smelly. Like, who wants their loved ones in like a cigarette stenched hearse? Right. And so Nathaniel Sr. throws a cigarette out the window, and he goes, Fine, I quit smoking. And so again, early two no early 2000s 90s, like nobody knows what speaker is, so he literally has a cell phone to his ear while he's driving. Well, but and then like also like puffing on a cigarette, so like no hands are driving. What happened?

SPEAKER_03

My mom used dead too.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god, cigarette. But how unsafe is that? Like, no hands are on the wheel. Like at some point you're gonna have to ask. And like now, no hands are on the wheel. Yeah. Oh, it's just so wild to see that. It really, really is. I mean, I I was alive when like that law, I think that law went into play in like 2003 or something or 2004, where um like hands on the wheel. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Hands-free cell phone, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because I remember having a cell phone and and and being able to like talk on it while you were driving.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like that's that was like ruled illegal during like the early 2000s, and that's why everybody had the dumbass Bluetooth headset. Instead of just using speaker, was speaker not a thing? I don't remember. I like how was that not?

SPEAKER_03

Anyway, yeah, I don't really remember because cell phones back then were still pretty new. Um I feel like they must have had a speaker phone, but but if ha I remember my house phone having a speaker when I was younger. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. It must have had it, especially a car phone, because that looked like a car phone. No, that was just a cell phone. Oh, it was a cell phone, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It was just like a like Motorola, like open close. So I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

I mean I don't know. May we j I guess we just I'll be honest though, like at that point I was already driving when I had a s like a cell phone, and it never occurred to me to put on a speaker either.

SPEAKER_02

It just That's like my first thing. Like as soon as like I get on the phone in the car, I'm just like speaker.

SPEAKER_03

No, but now we're we're so so like immune to like and like I mean it's been 20 years of hands-free, hands-free, hands-free you know, cell phone use, and so we have air pods, we have Bluetooth, we have all this stuff. Like, most of the cell phones now just connect right to your car, but back then it was not a thing.

SPEAKER_02

There wasn't even like an aux cord back then. No, like who uses an aux cord anymore, too? I mean, like there are people who use it. No, I was gonna say, but like cars are like don't rely on that anymore.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I mean, my car is I mean it's not old, but it's older.

SPEAKER_02

It's 2007, so like that was like optional at that point, it's not like it just wasn't a thing anymore. Yeah, I mean it wasn't a thing, period, like it wasn't introduced yet.

SPEAKER_03

So my car has voice command. Really? Yeah, but I never use it because what the fuck am I commanding? It's it doesn't turn on. Imagine that would be nice. Stop overheating. Um, yeah, like I've tried it, but I don't know what the fuck to do with it because it doesn't if I if I connect my cell phone, it's through the aux cord. And so I have um I have navigation in my car, I have the aux cord where I can do it. And if you go behind, you know where the navigation screen is, if you open that, there's a CD player, there's um like um don't tell me a cassette player.

SPEAKER_00

No, there's not a cassette player, but there's gonna say like an A-track or something. Oh my god, it's not that old.

SPEAKER_03

Um no, like a micro SD disc or something like that. Oh shit. Like for an SD card to us? Yeah, something like that.

SPEAKER_02

It's old scene. Yeah, and then it might be like people like okay, so I know my car has uh an SD card area, but they put like that's how they install navigation in cars through SD chips, but that was probably from usage. Like that was. I don't know. I I don't know how my navigation would have been installed. I just know that's how like I have a 2017, and that's how my car is. That I remember like leaving the dealership like afterwards, and then I remember getting a call saying you're gonna have to come back. Like, I had to like do something with my plates anyway. And um, they were like, Yeah, and you could pick up like we'll take it out of the other car. We realized we didn't give you navigation. And I was like, What do you mean? Like, who uses that? I have my phone, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Right, but I feel like my navigation was probably like a CD or something, but um, and then like if you you know, in the console, like I don't know if you've ever noticed that in the center console, there's the part here, like um towards the back that it it opens and closes like this, and that's where I have like you know, all the junk and this my inhaler, whatever, yeah, yeah, yeah. And then there's a small area in between, and then there's the cup holders, right? But the part here, like where the cup holders are, it opens, it's a flap. It's a a six C D changer. Oh my god. I know. Well, you know, back in 2007, that was the sick that was the shit. I remember that being the shit.

SPEAKER_02

I remember being a kid in my grandpa's like 2003, 2002, 2003, like Hyundai Santa Fe. It was like teal, you know, before its death in 2017, like right towards its death, it started smelling like crayons because he used to leave it in the sun. Oh no, yeah, it was the crayon car, and I mean the color makes sense to the name, but I remember putting multiple CDs in the CD port and just being mind-blown.

SPEAKER_03

There are still CDs in my CD, all of them have a CD in it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I like I never changed it. It was the whole switching between it and then hearing like the Yeah, and that shit used to blow my mind when I was younger, and I'm like, oh my god. I had like a CD player in my house that was like, I think that was probably four or five, yes, and it would turn, right? Yeah, I remember like flipping through and hearing the machine turn, and I just thought that was the craziest thing in the world.

SPEAKER_03

Like who knew the internet would be in our pockets shortly thereafter, but oh my god, yeah. No, I mean it's just it's just amazing like how far we've come. Like we used to okay, I used to have to if I wanted to hear a C D in my car, because I mean when I first started driving, it was like you were lucky if you had a cassette deck in your car, a tape deck. Because that was like an additional thing that you buy and you put in. Right, and so the tape had the cord attached, and you would put the tape in and attach it to your C D, like your disc man, and that's how you had to listen to CDs. Oh my god. And like imagine now I'm plugging in my phone so that I can listen to like Pandora or you know Waze. Right, like you know, we we are so in the future, but and like probably our kids will be like, oh my god, remember when my mom had to plug in her phone in the aux cord so that she could have Waze? And they'll be like flying their spaceship and shit. Yeah. How do we get the navigation of a spaceship? And it'll just be like in their eyeballs or something.

unknown

My god.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. I've drank.

SPEAKER_02

And all of our last names will be Jetson. Right.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly.

SPEAKER_02

Stella could walk herself on the outside treadmill, you know, thousands of feet above the ground.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. I've tried to put her on the treadmill to waste some of her waste, some of her energy, you know, but she is not a fan.

SPEAKER_04

Oh.

SPEAKER_03

She will do it for a spooky snack. Oh my god. If I give her a if I show her a treat, well, before when the treadmill was in the house. Yeah. Um, if I put it down and show her a treat, she would jump right on it and sit like, here I am. And what if you turned it on? Like she was not happy. Oh. But she would do it as long as I did it low, and I had to keep the leash tethered very um either give it a lot of room or keep it very tight because I didn't want her to like fall to the side. Right.

SPEAKER_02

And then like she would get hurt. But like that's like a thing, like people putting their dogs on treadmills. I mean, that's like in water therapy too. There's a treadmill inside like the tank for dogs. Um, but getting back, getting back to the show. Nathaniel, the father, is on his way to the airport. He throws a cigarette out the window because his wife Ruth is telling him, like, you're gonna die a slow, painful death, if you continue smoking. So he goes, Okay, see, I'm done smoking, like, it's over now.

SPEAKER_03

I quit. And he quits for all of like four seconds until he hangs up.

SPEAKER_02

He hangs up the phone and then he does that forbidden reach across the middle console while you're driving to get something, and what he's doing is that like he's getting his lighter to light the new cigarette in his mouth now that he's off the phone, and little does he know, either he missed the red light or somebody missed the red light from the opposite direction, and he gets T-boned in the new hearse, right in the driver's side door.

SPEAKER_03

Right. I think the point is that he missed it because he was not looking. That's my interpretation is that he was, you know, the irony, like of him looking for another cigarette and then dying from that, and then dying from it, like not even from lung cancer, but just from like a tension and he made a mistake.

SPEAKER_02

It's just it's crazy, and as that's happening in the same moment.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I don't know what she's doing either. Yeah. Oh, she sees she sees a tissue. Stella loves eating tissues. Yeah, it's like her favorite snack.

SPEAKER_02

And in that same moment, Ruth doesn't know that her husband just died in the car accident. But she's like cutting up vegetables for a pot roast and she cuts her thumb. And her other son, who yes, his name's David, who is in the room, was like, like Lisa said, like just like reading the paper, like just like it was in the morning, and um David starts complaining that like buying the new hearse was a total waste of money because he's overhearing the conversation that his mom had with his dad, and his mom's saying, like, you're stinking up the new hearse, and so David's just saying that like I think the new hearse was like a waste. Stella's now in my lap again. Oh my god, this dog's attached.

SPEAKER_03

I'm rude. If you weren't here, she would be in bed by now.

SPEAKER_02

Like in my ears over lip.

SPEAKER_03

She Alex is upstairs in bed, she would be right up there with him. She would not be here down down here with me because this is her bedtime. But it's because you're here that she's not going to bed. Oh, it's so exciting.

SPEAKER_04

I'm telling you.

SPEAKER_00

You're so cute.

SPEAKER_03

We almost slept together too when we were on vacation.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

But she I don't like I don't know what what it is, but she doesn't she doesn't even really sleep with the kids. Like, unless my door is closed and she can't get in, but she's learned to headbutt and she can open it. Big big head, right? Oh only if my bedroom is like too hot or something else is going on that she doesn't want to be a part of, then she might find she she'll go into Amaya's room, but uh only like during the day will she go in the kids' room. But if I'm up when I'm upstairs working, like she could be in any of their rooms with them. She'll be in my room because she can see me though. She's so fucking attached. That's my girl. That's my girl. Look at that. Look a fucking weirdo. Oh, there was a bug. I saw that. There's a fly. Um, where are we? Alright, Stella, stop interrupting.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, so David's overhearing the conversation that Ruth's having with his dad and was like, the hearse was a waste of money, not knowing it's completely totaled with his dead father inside of it. Like, it's just crazy. And so Ruth replies, she's like, I'd rather have my husband buy a fancy new hearse than leave me for like another woman, like a younger woman or an older woman, or like worse, a man. And you see David in this moment get really, really uncomfortable. Because like later we find out these guys.

SPEAKER_03

And I can't believe I I still can't believe I didn't connect that. Like especially this year. Did you connect in that moment? No. And I watched I watched the first ep well, okay. I've only watched the first episode. I watched it on Saturday. And then like I watched it the first time just to watch, like just to try, you know, like to to take it all in to that's what she's saying, to enjoy it. And then I watched it again on Sunday. And this when I watched it on Sunday, then I was like ready to take notes and and whatever. And I still didn't connect it. And I feel so stupid, like, because as soon as you said it, I was like, oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Because his mom's very and like you learn this about Ruth throughout the series, but especially throughout the first episode, which is what we're talking about, she's gonna stick up her ass. Like, oh yeah. You know, like, and I don't think she likes the fact that like other men like sticks up their ass. Like, like she's just like very she's super high strung. Yeah. So But we'll get there. And David is very closeted. So um he like knowing that his family is or especially his mother is uncomfortable with um like different sexualities. Like he's very uncomfortable in this moment. Yeah. Um and so after seeing David's uh discomfort, we then switch to Nate, who is right.

SPEAKER_03

Well he leaves to go get ready for service. Yes, because again, funeral family. Right. So and then we see Nate coming in at the airport.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and this was like a really interesting scene to see Nate introduced in this way. So Nate's at the airport and he's chatting with a woman that he apparently met on the plane.

SPEAKER_03

Right, like they're they're what what do you call it? Deplaning.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And um he gives her his cell phone number and she offers to give him a ride. And Nate's like, no, like my dad's my dad's on his way. Like, us knowing, like, dad's on his way, like, no, and that he was on it, he was, but he isn't now, he isn't in. He's on his way somewhere else. Exactly. And so it's just interesting to hear this woman say, like, oh, I'll give you a ride, not knowing that like he doesn't have a ride home, right? And so he's like, No, like, thank you, but like my dad's gonna pick me up. Uh, he's on his way, and she goes, Oh, not that kind of ride. And so you see it, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I don't want it to go on your one. Oh, that's okay. Oh, short of delicious protein. Yum, yum, yum. Just like once then.

SPEAKER_02

But yeah, he she goes, Oh, I wasn't talking about that kind of ride. And according to the synopsis, they end up making out in the janitor's quality. Oh, yes. I don't I don't think they I don't think that's how you make out.

SPEAKER_03

I don't think making out was part of it, was it? I think they did everything but make out. I think that's exactly what happened.

SPEAKER_02

Um because seeing him introduced in that way was just so interesting. Uh-huh. Like, and even seeing her introduced in that way, because this isn't just like a stranger to the show. Like, she is like a main, I would say like a main character.

SPEAKER_03

I I feel like right after well, at that point you don't know. Yeah, I mean she didn't even say her name.

SPEAKER_02

We know Nate's name, we don't know her name.

SPEAKER_03

Right. At that point, you don't know you you I mean, this person could be somebody that you'll see in see in the scene and then never see again. By the end of the episode, you realize no, there's more. Yeah, and so that's just such a silly but yeah, so they're quote unquote making out.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And so that that's what the kids call it now. Yeah, that's what Nate's doing. Oh, they're like in some closet that says like do not enter. It's like obviously like they're in like a tenerous closet, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

There's like circuit breakers and shit, and like that's something like airport security. You know that was pre-9-11.

SPEAKER_02

So it was, it was just a couple months before you could tell. Oh my god, yeah. They won't even joke about that shit now. No, not at all. Oh, anyway.

SPEAKER_03

Like, don't give any ideas. No make it out. Yeah, right? No making out in the janitor's closet.

SPEAKER_00

Making out. They end up making out in a janitor's closet.

SPEAKER_03

I I feel like I need to meet the 40-year-old virgin who wrote that.

SPEAKER_02

That's what I'm saying. Like, you went upstairs to get um like the headphones earlier, and I read that line and I was like, Yeah, okay, make it out.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, not at that angle, right? Um not with your pants off. Yeah, and his pants, like his ass was out. Yeah, like she was she's like, Oh no, is it do you make out with your ass out?

SPEAKER_03

I you know, well, I mean I could, but like if my ass is out, I'm usually doing something else.

SPEAKER_00

No, we're not with the t-shirt.

SPEAKER_03

And she's like massaging his ass, and she's like, There's some tightness. And he's like, Well, not as much as before. Yeah. Well, that's what happens when you make out in a janitor's closet.

SPEAKER_02

Make out. So, um, flash not flashback. We're going back to David's story in this. And so, well, supervising like the viewing to the funeral happening downstairs in their home, because they live upstairs funeral homes on the main level, and then the um mortuary? Okay. Is that the word? I don't know. Okay, well, the morgue. No, not the morgue. Um, the place where they do like the embalming and the makeup for the dead people. That's in the basement. So um the laboratory. No, I don't know. I feel like it's called a mortuary, but that word can mean something.

SPEAKER_03

It might. I mean, I don't I'm not really up to date on my funeral home knowledge.

SPEAKER_02

I feel like by the end of this, we're gonna know everything then. Yeah. Yeah, I can't wait. But um, back at the house, downstairs on the main level at the funeral.

SPEAKER_00

Stella's being a ween.

SPEAKER_03

I can't see Britney anymore because Stella has a big ass head in between us.

SPEAKER_02

No. Um, so David gets a phone call from his younger sister, Claire. So, there are three siblings: Nate, who's the oldest, David the middle child, and Claire, who's the youngest. And so Claire literally looks like a high schooler. She's in high school, we find that out. But like, she's much younger than her brothers. And that's something that like is defined throughout the series, especially with Nate and Claire's relationship. Um, how separated they were because of their age gap.

SPEAKER_03

But yeah, he mentions that well, he mentions it a little later, but he mentions that by the time like she came along, he was already out of the house, so he doesn't really know her.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Which just shows like that's like an almost 20-year like age gap. You think that yeah, I guess if he went to college at 18 and she was born, that's an almost 20-year age gap.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, unless she was just still a kid. I mean, because think about it, like owl. Uh when you're five, like if if you're 18, or even 20 or whatever, and you have a five-year-old sibling, you don't really know them. Like, even if you spent the last five years with them, like I guess I didn't give it much thought, like, to the age, but I thought she said that like he moved out when I was born.

SPEAKER_02

Oh. Or before I got to know him or something like that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, maybe. Maybe I just missed it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. But she um as David's on the phone with Claire, she said that she has to go see a friend before she heads home to like be unwillingly, like to unwillingly attend the family dinner. So everybody's like dreading this. Yeah, like David already knows it's gonna be a shit show because Nate's coming in and his sister's like his sister. Who we find out, like, as she's going to visit a friend's house, like, she was just looking to get high. And so she went to like this kid's house. There are other people there. Um They wanted to burn bright. Yeah. Um, she ends up like skipping ahead a little bit, like okay. Hold on, I gotta pause. We gotta come back because I feel like we're gonna have a whole conversation about this, but the most important thing this af in this episode happens now. After David and Claire get off the phone with each other. Why is my hand all the way up here? Um I don't know. I have my hand above my head like I'm in school or something. I was wondering why you were raising your hand. I don't know, it just it feels good right here. Okay. Yeah. Um, Ruth gets a phone call informing her that her husband died.

SPEAKER_03

Hold on. Where the fuck did the dog go? Did she know? Okay. The door closed? I thought it was.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. She's fucking psycho. Oh my god. And so Ruth gets, you know, the call. And she's taking the pot roast out of the oven at this point.

SPEAKER_03

Well, date okay, wait, yeah. David's already with people at the service.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but this is right when Ruth's finding out. Right, but there's already people. Oh, yeah, yeah. So like there's people downstairs at the service for like, you know, somebody else at the funeral home, and David's like just starting to get everything together, and all of a sudden they hear like these screams and bangs from upstairs. And David, knowing like the fuck my mom's up there, what's going on, he goes upstairs and he finds her like sitting on the kitchen floor. Things and she was grabbing anything she could in the kitchen, she was just throwing it everywhere, and oh, and she threw the whole pot roast on the floor, and she's sitting on the kitchen floor. And this was the funniest part, which is so sad. She looks to David because he looks around the room like what the fuck happened? She goes, The pot rose is ruined. Also, your father's dead.

SPEAKER_03

No, the the hearse is totaled. Oh she's like, Yeah, oh, the hearse is totaled and your father's dead, or something something like that.

SPEAKER_02

No, the hearse is totaled and I ruined the pot rose.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but like first it was the hearse. Yeah. And your father's dead.

SPEAKER_02

And then the father was almost like an afterthought, like Which is so weird because it's like she did that earlier too about the hearse with the cigarette smoke. So weird. She's like, You're gonna get the hearse smelling like cigarettes, and also you're gonna die. It's a slow painful death. So anyway. Now Ruth knows that Nathaniel died, and so does David.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_02

Um, flash flashing to Claire, she's at like that friend's house, and she's not smoking crack. Yeah, she's smoking meth. She goes, This isn't crack, right? And he goes, No, it's crystal meth. I thought they were the fucking same thing. I don't think so. I don't know that much about drugs. Me either. As much as I thought I knew about drugs because I in that moment I was like, Isn't crack just crystal meth? Unless maybe crystal meth is like the pure form of crack and crack's just laced with other shit. I don't think so. I thought they were both smoked out of a glass pipe.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but just because you could you could smoke anything anything out of a glass pipe, I'm sure.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Anyway, so kids high on crystal meth.

SPEAKER_00

If you know the difference between crack and meth, please let us know. Yeah, I'm I mean I could Google this after, but it just kind of like threw me off.

SPEAKER_02

Um But before that, I realize I'm skipping stuff. Uh Nate's still in the supply closet getting an ass massage from this random one. And his phone rings, and it's David, and David told tells him that his father is dead. Bless you. Thank you. Here comes the allergies. Um Stella. Yeah. That's why like I love her, but like you should have told me. I would have brought her back upstairs.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. But yeah. So I think the wine helped before, so drink drink more. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

You don't have to tell me twice.

SPEAKER_03

Plus, like, if you don't drink, I'm gonna end up drinking all of it. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_02

I'm I'm feeling good right now. Okay. With the little bit that I've had, so I'm having a blast.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Um so still in the supply closet, the girl refuses to tell Nate her name. And that's when Nate's Nate's I've had enough to drink tonight. That's when Nate's phone rings and it's David telling him that their father's dead. A few minutes later, we see Claire not smoking the meth. I mean the crack. Meth. We see her smoking meth. And she's with like these random people, and um, there's this guy that's like telling her that like, yeah, like it's not crack, it's meth. Like, you're gonna burn bright. You're gonna burn bright. And it makes sex so much better. Like, you literally. And then she gets the call from like she literally hits it, and then she goes, There's no going back now. And then her phone rings, and she steps away from everybody, like also doing the drugs and doing the drugs, and it's David, and he breaks the news to her, and she walks back into the room like disgruntled, and she's just like, I don't think I could stay, I think I have to go. And the guy who was like primal sex, like, let's go.

SPEAKER_03

He was like, You can't leave, and she's like, I think I have to my dad died, and I have to pick up my mom and take her to the morgue and to identify his body, and they just start laughing, and she starts on I'm not kidding though, yeah, yeah. I mean she laughs, but she's like, But I'm not kidding, and then she what does she say, like, I guess I'm gonna burn fucking bright or some shit.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, she has that like teenage angst, you know, and it's just like it's really that's her whole demeanor, just angsty, and like the things that she says, you like I mean, like look, she's going through something right now, but you see it like coming out, and like her demeanor, the things that she says, and she also is driving around the old hearse and she painted it green. It's so cool. I like it a lot.

SPEAKER_03

But um, going back a little bit, so when um before before we hear Ruth's scream because she got the call or whatever, David is downstairs with the service, and there's like an older gentleman looking at the person in the coffin, and he's like, Oh, you know, like commenting on her, and and um David says something like, Oh, she's at peace now, and and the guy's like, I wrote this down because I literally laughed out loud. Oh shit, I missed this. And the guy was like, if there's any justice in the universe, she's shoveling shit in hell. Yeah, and he was like just so deadpan about it. I was like, oh my god, that and he was just like, Okay, like okay, like how do you even react? And and the guy was like not angry, nothing. He was just like he was matter-of-fact, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I remember that now, and this is why I was drawn to this show because it just makes so light out of like such horrible situations, and as the series goes on, you learn that like the the types of death are fucking horrible and so accidental. Think of one specifically, but we'll get to that episode. Um, anyway, so while the while driving Nate to the hospital, wait a second. What happened? Hold on. Okay, no, I was right. Um, so the mysterious woman from the closet ends up driving Nate to the hospital. And while driving Nate to the hospital, the woman tells him about her family and says that both of her parents are strengths who only stay together because of like their children and like her romantic depressive brother. So she was just like saying, like, every family has their shit. Like, she's like, I'm so sorry for what you're going through, but like let me tag along with you on this terrible journey because I don't want to go home to that shit. Your terrible journey is better than mine. Yeah, and so Nate tells her about his own family, and we learned that Claire was very young when Nate left, so he doesn't really know her. And that's when Nate was saying, like, yeah, I left like when she was born or something like that. Um in Claire's car, because now the scene switches to seeing Claire in her car driving in her old green hearse, um, driving the very distressed Ruth um to the Merck. And you see Ruth like just suddenly ask her daughter out of nowhere, like, are you having sex and doing drugs? And Claire's driving on crystal meth is like, why would you say that to me right now? I think that's literally what she said. And the mom's like, well, I just realized that like I can't remember the last time we talked about anything important like that.

SPEAKER_03

She's like, and your father's dead, like or so something like that. She was like, Your father's dead, and we never talk.

SPEAKER_02

Like, yeah. What the way that I'm sorry, but the way that Ruth reacts is just really funny. Yeah. Like what like seeing her in the grieving process is like I hate this, but it's like hilarious. Like the way that like things are being coming, like things the way that things come out of her is just Well, I think that's the point.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, I don't think you should feel bad because I I feel like she's written that way.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly. And so, um David's still at the service though, that's being run, like, by their family, in their family funeral home. And there's this like he keeps like zoning out and just having like very paranoid um like illusions. Like vision excuse me, like visions, I guess. And so this one woman starts talking to him about nothing, and he's imagining her saying, like, oh, and now that your father's said, you can't go to law school, and now you're stuck here forever and ever. And he actually like audibly screaming.

SPEAKER_03

Because she's like a a groupie. Because she's Oh my gosh, she's like, I've been to four funerals. And then she's like touching him, and she's like, Did you did you what was she saying? Like, is this your work or something? And and he's just like, What?

SPEAKER_02

Like Which is the total opposite of anything, like he's gay and his father died. Like, nobody wants to talk about it.

SPEAKER_03

Well, we don't know that he's gay yet. No, but but but like, even still, how inappropriate.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no, seriously. I mean, like, she didn't know that like his father died, but like just to like hit on someone's funeral out of place, out of touch.

SPEAKER_03

I know. Even if you are the one running the place, I mean, to you it's just a job, but she's just like, Oh, I've been to four funerals, and she's like caressing his arm, and and he's just like She's supposed to be there grieving.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. The way she was saying, like, the funeral, she was like, one cancer, one accident, and one childhood leukemia. Oh my god. Like the way that like she threw that out there was just like, yeah, fuck lady.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so she and then so like that's what happens, right? He drowns her out. Like he he like tunes her out with his own thoughts of what she's saying.

SPEAKER_02

But imagines her saying that, you know, even though you were hoping to go to law school one day, it won't be possible now because your father's dead, and you need to run over this funeral home. And like I said, he audibly screams. Everybody around him like looks at him like are you. She runs away. Yeah, and she just like runs away. What? Run away. And so now going to the hospital to identify the body, um, Nate and the woman arrive in the hospital. And when they walk in, they see Ruth just sitting there with Claire. And so this is the first time Nate's seeing his mom in who knows how long, anyway. And so immediately he runs over and hugs his mom. And Ruth, being Ruth, like we're obviously getting like attuned to her personality. She goes, not even reacting to her son. She goes, Who's that? As they're like, I don't blame her. Yeah. I mean But she said it more like, Who's that? Like who are you dating? Not like I don't know who'd be like me would have been like, Who the fuck is that? But she didn't say it like that. She said it in a way like you didn't tell me about her. Which was just so weird because she's focusing on things other than what's going on right now, which is like a grieving process.

SPEAKER_03

First of all, if your mate, why do you bring this fucking stranger, you don't even know her name, up with you, and and her why do you go up? Because all you did had to do is drop him off.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then you stay there the whole time, even though you you're done.

SPEAKER_02

Like you Do you think this tells us about what kind of person Nate is or what kind of person she is? By the way, she introduced herself to Ruth as Brenda Chenowitz. Well, he didn't introduce her Brenda now.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he didn't introduce her. When when she asked, uh she introduced her to say that.

SPEAKER_02

Did I say he introduces her as Brenda? Oh I thought you did. Oh no, I'm sorry. Like she gets introduced. Like she introduces her.

SPEAKER_03

Right, like she introduces herself because he doesn't know her name.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. So now he knows her name. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So like when Ruth is like, who's this? Like he's like, This is and she's like, Brenda Chenowitz. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I think that we get we're supposed to get the impression that she is either more into him than she let on, or um, based on what she said about like her crazy family and and whatever, like she's just looking for the drama.

SPEAKER_02

So you think that she enjoys standing on tow boxes?

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. But like I think she was just um like she could have been just more interested in seeing like somebody else's train wreck. Like that's not her own, but I'm not sure. Like I just think that that's a possibility. I just don't understand the motivation. Like, if you just met someone I mean, she didn't even want to say her name.

SPEAKER_02

Like, why would you go and meet their family?

SPEAKER_03

Why often in in such an intimate moment, like your father died, and you gotta go meet your mother who's identifying the body. So she gets off on other people's trauma.

SPEAKER_02

Is that like what you're yeah?

SPEAKER_03

I mean that's what I'm saying. It could be that, or it could just be that she realizes that maybe she is more into him than she led on, and so she doesn't want to end it, end the encounter yet? I don't I don't know. Yeah. And only because also then you see them still talking throughout the episode, so I don't know. Like, is it because of that little shared moment that maybe they had that bond, or is it because like you mean their um presumed like a conversation on the plane and then what happened in the airport?

SPEAKER_02

Well, like when they get off the plane It seems like they were talking about it.

SPEAKER_03

They're talking about like right, and they're talking they they mentioned like massage or something, and it it seemed like it was very light conversation, like flirty, light, oh I do shiatsu massage, oh I'm gonna have to try it. Whatever. Like just flirty, um, not anything deep, meaningful, like surface level stuff, yeah. But then afterwards, even after their encounter and they're making out in the closet, I don't know how deep their connection would have been, but then he gets the phone call and she takes him, and that it's like something there changes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Because had that not happened, would they still have communicated?

SPEAKER_02

Would they still have That's true, because there would have been nothing connecting them past their like hookup.

SPEAKER_03

Right. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So I don't know, like I don't know if maybe something changed in her eyes and you know so that's why instead of just dropping him off at the hospital, she went in. Right. I mean, like they were in a cab, she wasn't driving, so like she easily.

SPEAKER_04

She would have been driving.

SPEAKER_02

Was she? I thought they were sitting in the back of the cab.

SPEAKER_03

I thought she was driving. Which I remember thinking, well, how does she have a car?

SPEAKER_02

I could have sworn they were sitting in the backseat together. But I could be wrong. I could totally be wrong. But well, cause her parents live in the town.

SPEAKER_03

Right. But because then I was like, oh but maybe she had her car parked at the airport, but then But like her parents didn't pick her up and her brother didn't pick her up.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. Anyway I don't yeah, I'm curious now. I think they were sitting in the back of the car. Cause I don't remember her like being busy driving. She wasn't distracted by anything. She was in conversation because she was talking about her family. Let me check right now, because it's gonna bother me. Because then why would she give him a ride? Maybe just mean oh yeah, he could have just took a cab. He could have took his own cab. Maybe she understood that he was disgruntled and so she was like, Here, we'll get a cab together.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. I feel like then the line was like, Oh, you know what, we can share a cab. Yeah. But I don't know. Like her I guess her driving made the most sense. Like the way she was like, Oh, I'll give you a ride. And then after they left the hospital, nobody had to give her a ride. Like if she didn't have a car, how did she get home then?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm tracking. I'm I have the episode on right now. Hold on.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, she was driving. I see her arms up. Look, I'm on the scene.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Is that the right scene? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So anyway, they're at the hospital right now. Um, and she introduces herself as Brenda Chenowitz to Ruth. Um, and she it's so funny, um, not really, but Nate and Claire walk away because Claire's like, I really need to talk to you right now. And and Nate was just trying to like console his mom, and at like, and then at some point Claire's like, I really have to talk to you, and she pulls him away to tell her to tell Nate that like she's tweaking and like she's really high on drugs. But while they're walking away, um and Brenda introduces herself like by full name, Ruth's like, How did you guys meet? And she's like cooking class, like just so like scripted, right? Right. And so script is so natural, and it just shows you like how she could be like not deceptive, but like how that could lead into her being deceptive. And I saw that in the episode. Not that like anything happens that I really like truly remember afterwards. It just like in that moment when I saw that, I was like, that's deceptive behavior. Being just so I don't know if I could do that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I don't know. I feel like I don't have that skill to like Yeah, if if if it was me, I would have been like the right people. We met on the plane.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I would have said that instead of cooking class, right? And it was she responded the same way that Ruth said it in the same tone, and I was just like, ooh, that is years of practice. So when Claire, right? That's her name. What that when Claire's telling Nate that like she's super super high, yeah, he's kind of just like deal with your own shit.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, he's kind of a jerk about it. He's like, You can't do this to me right now. I think he said, like, is this something that you do?

SPEAKER_02

Uh yeah, maybe. Like something along the lines of like he doesn't he's like he's like, I'm sorry that you're having a bad drug experience, but like you're gonna have to deal with it because I'm the one who have to I'm the one who I have side that's my dad's body.

SPEAKER_03

Right, because she could cause Ruth couldn't do it. Yeah. And I I get all that, right? Like everyone's going through their own shit. But when she confides in him, like, you know, she's going through shit too. That's her brother, and he's just like, you can't do this to me right now. Like, dude, relax. Like I know it's it was it it seems so harsh. It did. It did seem hard. Like it's selfish.

SPEAKER_02

And at the same time, like not knowing that like Claire spoke before she got the news, um, hearing that like somebody's having a bad drug experience while like parent just died is kind of just like what the fuck? Like this isn't the time to talk about this. She was trying to confide in somebody because she was scared, but he wasn't seeing it that way. And I I understand both sides. It it was just a weird situation. I feel like either way it would have played out that way.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I think I think it wouldn't it would have been a lot for him to be like, okay, I'll take care of you, but I also think that it wouldn't have been too much for him to be like, Alright, well just stay here, do it. Stay here, yeah. You know, and like he just messed up. And I'll help you as much as I can. Or whatever, you know, whatever.

SPEAKER_02

But do you think he was like extra angry because um Brenda like followed him?

SPEAKER_03

I don't think he was angry about that. I think he I think he was just I think he was overwhelmed. And I think that only after one episode, right? So now I'm totally an expert on this show. But I think that they are all all the characters, at least in the Fisher family, are very tightly wound. And I think that they're all very selfish.

SPEAKER_02

I was gonna say, they seem like they're all in their own world. Mm-hmm. Their own needs, their own world, and like they seem like they share some kind of family value, but it's not valued as much as you'd think it is.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and like even just the way he was like so ready, like I mean, you know, oh massage, okay, well we'll fuck in the janitor's closet. Like not knowing his father's not coming, like, wouldn't you go downstairs and like wait for your dad? And then when he when she says like she's not gonna give him his name, and he's just like, okay, like, but like, sure, you can take me to the hospital and come up with me. You won't even tell me your name, like, and he's not even bothered by it. Yeah, like I f and that's that's what makes me feel like they're just also like selfish and like self-absorbed because it didn't occur to him that that should bother him. Like okay, I know she's doing something, and and like that's all it is, right? Like, okay, but whatever. She we fucked, and she doesn't want to tell me the name, but like I need to ride to the hospital, so like, not like I'll get a cab and thanks, but no thanks. But like I'd I'd like to know your name. Like, I'd like to know who you are. It's just so weird. It really is.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Which also weird. Um, as Nate's identifying his dad's body, he starts to have like a hallucination. Um, where like the Morgan play turns into like his dad's spirit telling him This is the first time, right? The first yeah. Um, telling him that like although he's tried to escape like the business of death, um, he'll have to join it anyway. And which connects to another flashback that Nate's gonna have, and we'll get to that when it comes. But Nate comes to like comes to realization again, and you know, like the morgue employee turns back into the morgue employee, and he's like, Yeah, that's my dad. And while he's having this hallucination, you could see like the dad's dead body, like the unzipped bag, you see his face, you see like the blood on his face. It's it's very real. It's not gory, I would say, but it's very real. It feels real, and gore to me, like, yes, gore could be real, but gore is so fictional. But to see just like that, like a bloody head like on a dead body in a bag, that was real death to me. Which was just weird. But um anyway, after Nate identifies his dad, he walks out of the room, he's like, Okay, time to go. Like when he gets back into the hallway with his family and Brenda, and Claire's like rushes out and she tells her mom, like, Mom, we have to go, we have to drive Nate home. He wants to get home. She like runs down the hall with her mom and they turn around to see like if Nate's gonna follow, and so they just walk out, like, to wait for him, and he turns to Brenda and he thanks Brenda for driving him, and you know, he said something like, Well, I see you again, and she's like, I wish you the best. Um, she's like, Don't pretend like this is a moment where we can both be honest and not pretend like this was our first time doing something like this, and um, I hope you have a good life, and like good luck with everything going on. She walks out, and so you think like they're not gonna like talk to each other ever again after that. And I got the opposite.

SPEAKER_03

See, like I felt like up until that point, maybe I would have believed that they could have but there was something about the way she said it that was so like reverse psychology. Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I mean, like her like the initial intent was to be like, oh, they're never gonna see each other again. But yeah, she's trying to do some reverse psychology.

SPEAKER_03

Up until you drove him to the hospital and met his mom and then waited. Yeah. Like you didn't just say, Okay, I'll walk you up, you know, but blah blah blah. Like, you stayed there.

SPEAKER_01

So weird. It really is so weird.

SPEAKER_03

And then you want to pretend like, okay, great, we're we're not gonna see each other. Like, if you were not gonna see each other, you would have even if you stayed in the whole time, you would be like, Alright, well, listen, uh, I'm so sorry for your loss, and it was very nice meeting you and and all of that. Blah blah blah. Like, but you went into this whole speech about oh, let's not br let's not lie to each other. What the fuck do you care if you're gonna lie to somebody if you're never gonna see them again? Exactly. So that like at that point, I was like, oh, this bitch.

SPEAKER_02

So you think that she m was manipulating Nate by using vulnerability to get him to uh like to reel him in almost?

SPEAKER_03

I don't know, but I think that she was definitely like pulling some strings, you know, because I just feel like she said that because she wanted to see him again. Why? I get that.

SPEAKER_02

I get that, but the like her whole point of saying that was to act as if they were never gonna see each other again. And so now Clay is Clay.

unknown

Clay.

SPEAKER_02

Clay. Oh my god. Her two shit. So now Claire's driving Nate and Ruth home. She's driving a little erratically, and Nate points it out, and he like yells like pull over. Ruth is just like not phased by anything. I guess she's oblivious. She's in such a trance right now, and so they cross over the back of the hearse to like change um seats, and that's when Nate says to Claire that you know, like what you're doing is crazy, and she's like, You're not my father. Which was just like kind of uncalled for in the moment. It was again like out of touch to um their situation. And while they're then driving it could have just been like um a Freudian slip.

SPEAKER_03

I guess. You know, like as a female, somebody tries to tell you what to do, it's like, you know, my father.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but it's just especially if it's like an angsty teen. But that was a dig because he hasn't been around and now dad's dead. That was specifically a dig in that way, and that's what I meant by angstiness, and like you see that coming out in her. And so as they're driving home, you see David at home now. Um, the the service is over, and he's just like waiting on the main level. And um then when the family comes in, you see David getting mad at Nate when he finds out that the family didn't bring the body back, and he has to go and do it himself. And so Ruth walks right up to David and is like, You're right, we should have brought in the van to bring the body back. I didn't think about that. I made a mistake, or at least she said something like that. And it's so like bad touch, like a bad taste in my mouth for the whole situation. I'm just like, I feel like everybody's out of touch. Like David, just what the fuck? Anyway, so um while David is out in the van going back to the morgue, you see Claire upstairs watching TV in like a state of shock. She's like watching some cart. Oh my god, and her face like glue to the TV. You see Ruth in the background bringing her food, and she's like, I'm the opposite of hungry. Ruth gets frustrated, and she's like, We all have to eat.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, she's like, We're still alive, we're not dead, and she like drops the plate, like not drops the plate, but like drops it onto the table.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and so I'll I'll eat it. Ruth's comments like that are just showing like how unaccepting of death she is when it's somebody in relation to her, regardless of working in the funeral home. And that's the whole like the whole I don't know, like spin to the show. It's the way that like the family is having a hard time dealing with death, but they deal with death every single day. But it's a job, it's not personal exactly, which is weird how like you know, outsiders like there's a very small percentage of the population that works in funeral homes. I would say not very small, but a small percent. The average person doesn't work for a funeral home. And so that's okay. And so us looking in, these outsiders that don't work in funeral homes looking in. I know I was having a hard time, like, or I would have a hard time separating personal death from business death. But it's so weird to see them having a hard time doing that. Because for me, like death is death. Like I'm upset with like when random people die. Like if I had to go to Shirt and Hurt's funeral, like I would cry.

SPEAKER_03

I have cried because I'm just sad and it's a sad it's also hard being around people who are upset, but they do like every single day, and it's just it's like the you have empathy, so like you don't necessarily know the people, but you know that they're in pain and that and that makes you hurt. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And so after this, um hold on. I got lost. I saw something and I was like, what? Um so David has to go to the morgue and he's really distressed, and he's picking up the body, so that's why well, his father's body, so that's why they could bring it back to the funeral home, and they can have their employee uh Frederico come in, who's like the main uh mortician. Yeah, he's he works wonders. Yeah, you could tell that David is like a secondary in the morgue. I mean uh in the mortuary.

SPEAKER_03

Right, like doing the technical stuff, like I guess the embalming and the keeping the books.

SPEAKER_02

Like he's not they they allude to the fact that like he he's good at like making appointments and doing paperwork and not doing like real person stuff right there. The um like it's a tough job that he's not eligible to do. Yeah. And so this is where the second commercial comes in. So I would say this is like the second take. And this is like where the second section of the show starts, because this show is like really mapped out in sections by the fake commercials. There's a fake commercial for Living Splendor Embalming Fluid, and it's like it was like a guy sitting on the beach, better than a lot, like uh the best thing is alive. Yeah, the only thing better than this embalming fluid is actually being alive. Like it it was so it's funny and it's creepy, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And then again, like yeah, because you're you're looking at the way the camera is panning this guy, and it's like ebbs and this like perfect skin, and you think that it's gonna be a guy at the beach with a corona in his hand, and it's a dead guy.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, commercials show us like the life we want to live, not that's true, yeah. And so to see the opposite and like these like mock commercials are really interesting. And after this commercial, we get a flashback, like I was referring to earlier, of Nate, um, when he was a child, and he was entering like that restoration room, that like mortuary, and he sees his father working on like this guy, and you can see like tubes in the the guy, like like draining his blood, putting the fluids in, and his dad is saying, like, don't be afraid, like he's not gonna hurt you. Like, you can't. And um, then you see young David run in, like, behind Nate, and he's just like acting his naked Barbie doll or whatever that's like. But I think like it was a gun, like shooting his dad with like the Barbie doll, and the dad's like, ah, like it was it was really cute, but it just shows you how like David has that barrier between like death from a young age, but Nate couldn't like get over that hurdle. Like he's he was still afraid of death. Yeah, and seeing it in his house was really traumatizing for him. And so Nate Singer offers Nate a pair of gloves, so that's why he could touch the body, but like little Nate runs away. And so after the flashback, we see Frederico in the basement. Remember, it's Christmas Eve, so he left his family. Yeah, he left his family to come and embalm um Mr. Fisher. Uh Nathaniel Singer. Big name.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, Mr. F.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Mr. F. And he's like, of course I would like leave my house at any time. It doesn't matter what holiday. He did a lot for me. And so it just shows that like Frederico feels like he owes something to Mr. Fisher. I'm just gonna call him Mr. Fisher. It feels better. Okay. Um and so David's there and he gives Nate like the cold shoulder, but then David's phone rings, and this is where things get spicy. And so he gets a phone call and it's from like a guy, and he's like, I'm preparing something totally decadent and fatty for dessert. And like the guy's super super flirty on the phone with David, and we like learn that like the guy's name is Keith, and um there's some kind of like relationship going on between them, whether it's casual or or an actual relationship. We learn later what kind of relationship they have, but we're exposed to the fact that like David's in a relationship or some kind of relationship with Keith. And um David tells Keith that his dad just died, he won't be able to come over. And Keith is like, Oh my god, I'm so sorry. He's like, Can I do anything? And David's like, No, it's fine. And he's like, David, you don't have to go through this alone. And so Keith just shows how supportive he is, which just indicates like how much of like a amazing staple in David's life he actually is, regardless of David like pushing him away. And so Frederico proudly shows Nate like pictures of like his masterpieces. And do you remember like the story? Because that was so gross.

SPEAKER_03

Uh it was something like a shot, like a husband and wife.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like this husband got really, really angry at home and came home and shot his wife like deadpan, like right in the right eye. Right. And then shot himself in the mouth.

SPEAKER_00

And he shot like the before and the after.

SPEAKER_03

He's like, This can never happen.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And he's like, look at these lovebirds.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Like, again, somebody who can like really. Distance themselves from death, which is crazy. Um and so then he's like, and look at my like my favorite masterpiece that I made, and he shows him a picture of his son. And so Nate's like, isn't he like an infant? Like, how did he get so old? And he's like, It's been four years, and in that moment we find out that it's been four years since Nate's been home. Nate's been gone a while. So, and like in relation to Claire, Nate hasn't been home since like she maybe was like in fifth grade. If she's like a freshman in high school, he hasn't been home since. Well, if she's driving, she probably has to be a little older, right? It's California though. Their driving laws are much lower. Oh. Yeah, so I'm pretty sure it's like a freshman or a sophomore, depending on like when your birthday is, you could drive. Oh yeah. I know New York and New Jersey are the highest at 17. Um, and then 17 within like another.

SPEAKER_03

I got my license at 16.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I I think it's 17 now.

SPEAKER_03

Well it is. I mean it it was. 16 is like a provisionary license, yeah. Yeah, like I I passed my test. I got my license. But you know, fucking New York. I got my license, but I wasn't supposed to use it. Yeah. So it's provisionary. It's some great New York shit. Like anyway. But um they when when Nay is talking to Frederico, they're you know, like they're catching up and they're broing it up or whatever, and then like they curse. And David is so like upset by this, and he's like, show some respect.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, which was so weird. Like, again, stick up the ass.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And so um, Nate then like relocates, and he um he was talking to Claire, and he was trying to cheer her up because she was just so in a state of shock, and he's like, and then like he also knows that like she's high as fuck, and he's like, You wanna go to grocery store? And she's like, Yep. And so, like, prior to this, also we find out that like he was working oh my god. Okay, so when Oh my yeah, so when they came in from like the morgue to the funeral home, and like Nate and David, like you remember when I said like Nate was kind of upset with David? Yeah, they started like fighting with each other, and like David's like, Well, you know, you working at like your pantry like grocery store in Seattle, and then like Nate's like, and you're living up here in the funeral home. And Claire goes, Why don't you just take your dicks out and measure them? And that shit was so funny. It was just so funny because it was just so crude and like in the moment too, extra crude. But anyway, so Nate's like Mr. Grocery Store, so he was like, You want to go to grocery store? Claire's like, Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, some some shit like that. I I didn't even know how to take that. I was like, is he serious with this shit, or is he like just really trying to make us laugh? Like yeah, yeah. And so at the grocery store, he gets a call from Brenda, and so they were just like kind of bantering on the phone, and then Nate started bantering about like how her psychological background, like like she says something to him, and he's like, Oh, you you think you know me so well because your parents are like shrinks and right, and then and he I forgot what he tells her exactly, but then she says it back to him. She kind of like puts him in his place, puts him in his place. I don't know what you were doing, but like she tells him who he is and basically like hangs up the phone.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, she was like, You're the type of guy that like nobody would like actually see like having a relationship with. Like, you're the type that like people are like, Oh, he's like a quick fuck, like a good fuck, but nothing else. And um they hang up the phone, Nate's just like what the fuck?

SPEAKER_03

Well, she hangs up on him, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like he gets hung up on he's just like what the fuck? Um and Claire like you know, has like uh she like breaks down to Nate in the birthday.

SPEAKER_03

Well she she calls over to him and I forget what she tells him, but like right away he snaps at her and he's like, Can I have one minute?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like what Oh, she was like, Can we just go home? I really need to take a shower. Oh, right, right. And he's like, Can I just have one minute? And she's just like, What the fuck? Then she grabs a melon and she throws it on the floor, and he was like, and in that moment, like it's like he finally saw her. Yeah, and like saw her as a person, and I'm sure like with that age difference, he probably always looks at her like a little kid. Yeah, yeah. Saw that she was a real person that moment, was like like sentient, and he and he was like, Okay, let's go home. And then the fucking like grocery store clerk's like, You're gonna have to pay for that, and she's like, Yeah, she just attacks, so that wasn't an invitation. Um, and now we're on the third scene of the show with the introduction with the third commercial, which is for um wound filler cosmetic molding putty. Um, and so Nate, Ruth, and Claire are in the kitchen the next morning, and Ruth shouts at Claire without any reason. What a surprise. Ruth's Ruth's been acting like this.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Like her way of grieving is different from everybody else's, but she's very um out there with her grieving. I would say compared to everybody else. And she's very tense. I mean, like, who wouldn't be, but yeah, she's taking it out on everybody. Um, and David's working with Nate with the wound filler from the oh, so like David's working on his father, like filling in the wounds on his head, like the the bloodiness that you could see from like earlier.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And while he's doing that, like he his dad, like he's hallucinating his dad over his shoulder, telling him, like, he's not good. Oh, you're working on me. Yeah, and so like he's talking back to his father, but like obviously no one's there, so he's just literally talking to his father's dead body, and like Frederico walks in, he's like, uh, are you okay? Are you busy? Did I interrupt you?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, just wanting you to know I'm here.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and so Frederico comes in and here it's David, uh David talking to himself, and like David's embarrassed, whatever. Yeah, his face, he's just like, oh shit. Yeah. But it seems like David and Nate are having a lot of like um like hallucinations of their dad talking to them, and as I say that, we're going into one of Nate where Nate, Nate's a runner, like it seems like running's like his way of like being a person. Like you you know how runners are. So, um, I don't have to explain runners to you. And so he stops at like a crosswalk and he sees like a bus coming and he starts hallucinating him standing in front of the bus.

SPEAKER_03

But you don't necessarily know it's a hallucination at first.

SPEAKER_02

No, you don't, and that's what I like about this show because they show like what actually happened immediately after the hallucination's over. And so he stands in front of the bus, he gets hit by the bus, and he's laying down on the floor smiling, as blood's pouring out of his head, and like the bus driver comes out to look at him and is like, oh my god. And as he's fading out, he sees himself like slowly coming to the morgue, like appearing in the morgue, and his father turning around saying, like, we'll get you in on the next one.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's it's like a bunch of old dead guys, naked old dead bodies playing cards.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like we'll do you in next hand. Yeah, yeah, it's just so weird, and then he comes back to like life. Obviously, the bus passes him, and um he like snaps back to reality. And so at this point, um, it's the viewing. Like, Mr. Fisher is all embalmed, he's all taken care of, and now it's viewing time. And Nate and Claire argue, Nate's apparently unhappy about his life, and he was even saying, like, Claire's like, you haven't been here my whole life, and he's like, I thought like what I was doing was temporary, my shitty apartment was temporary, my shitty job was temporary, and so he's just like expressing his like um like unhappiness in his life, yeah. And as like he's trying, he like he's really forming a connection with Claire in this moment. Some fucking woman walks over and was like, I'm so sorry for your loss.

SPEAKER_03

Because they're they're like sitting on the like the sofa or whatever, yeah, in like the viewing room, yeah. Yeah, and and she's like, Did she say, like, oh she's in a better place he's in a better place now, yeah. And he's like, Yeah, or whoever goes. And then he goes, Who is that woman? And it was just so funny the way that he was like because it was so awkward, like she comes over and she's like, He's in a better place now. Yeah, and he's like, Who are you? And then when he's when he he doesn't like snap at her, but he says it kind of snappy, like, okay. Yeah, and then she's like all like fucking insulted.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you, like something like that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah. And like, oh I'm sorry, you're you're insulted? Who the fuck are you? Like go away.

SPEAKER_02

And so Ruth's in her room, uh getting ready, like to go downstairs, and her dead husband appears, and he says something along the lines of He says I forgive you. Because he knows everything. Yeah. But Ruth is hallucinating this. This is Ruth's first hallucination, from what I remember.

SPEAKER_03

I think so. And so after I think my whole only one, right? In at least in this episode.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So after this, like, she she comes downstairs, and while she's coming downstairs, a little like baby scene happens where Keith, like, arrives to like comfort David. Now, in this moment, we find out Keith's a policeman, and the whole family has some stigma against policemen because they're like, Who who knows a police officer? Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like, that's Dave's friend. David's friend, he's friends with a cop. No, he's David's friends with the police officer. David has friends, he's friends with a cop. Like, they're all surprised. And then when Ruth comes down and's like, Who's who's the police officer?

SPEAKER_02

Like, what happened?

SPEAKER_03

Right, she thought there was a problem.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And so she's like, How do you guys know each other? And Keith's like from racquetball, and she's like, David plays racquetball. It was just really funny to see like how much David's family does not know about him.

SPEAKER_03

Well, in fairness, he doesn't play racquetball, probably. No, but like they said it as in like maybe he couldn't, we don't know that about him. Right, right. Yeah, I mean, if I said, Oh, I know somebody from racquetball, you'd be like, You don't play racquetball. Yeah. Yeah, like you would know that. Yeah. But um But Ruth starts like crying. And um He has to take her to like, what is it, the slumber room or something? What do they call it?

SPEAKER_02

Like Yeah, there's like and I I've been to this room before um at funerals. Yeah, okay. Um, there's like usually like little sidebars where people who are really expressing emotion um can go and take care of their emotions, where it's not disturbing the other people in mourning. Interesting. Yeah. Um I remember being in one at the church, like at my grandma's funeral.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know if I've been in one.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Um, it was really weird. But um so he pulls his mom into like the side room and Nate telling Claire um he was like I Nate was telling somebody, it doesn't even say it here, but Nate was telling somebody, like that's a little like side room where um you're allowed to express your emotions. Maybe he was telling Keith. I don't think he spoke to Keith. I don't remember. But in that room, Ruth confesses that um she had or no, she's she's like, my your father knows everything now. Like, I'm so ashamed or something, and David's like, what are you talking about? And Ruth confesses that she had an affair with somebody that she met at church and they used to go camping a lot together, and um now Mr. Fisher knows. Cause he said he liked her hair. Yeah, because it was a hairdresser, yeah. And so he basically like this hairdresser, um he showed her attention when Nate Sinker didn't my nose is leaking. I'm so sorry. I'm sorry. No, it's okay, it's okay. Um your fault, Stella. She's so cute though, it's okay.

SPEAKER_03

Not really, it's mostly the cat's fault. She's like opened her eyes and looked at me like, what? Okay, go back to sleep.

SPEAKER_02

Um, yeah, but she starts unburdening on them, and they're just like Well, meaning them because eventually Nate and Claire go in the room. Was was Claire in there? Oh no, no, I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_03

Nate goes in the room to see like what's going on. Oh, right, so it's just the two boys.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And so then David leaves, Nate's still like comforting his mom, and David goes out to Keith and was like, You wanna comfort me? Remember when you said like I don't have to go through this alone? Get this. I just found out my mom was having an affair.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because Nate's just like let her because David's like, this is so inappropriate, blah blah blah. Your father's laying and and uh your husband's like and sh and Nate is saying just let her. Like, let her, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And so that and then that's what like he can't deal with this, so that's when he walks out of the room.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And so then David walks out, he goes over to Keith, he says that, and Keith flips his hand through David's hair, like consoling him, and that's how you could tell that like they have they they must know each other enough to they physically touch each other, and they must be doing that in public, obviously not around David's family, but David must that must be their rapport, right? And David, realizing where they are, immediately like pushes his hand away, but Claire sees them, right?

SPEAKER_03

But also remember when he shows up and David tells him, like, what are you doing here? Yeah, and he's like, I came to show support, and he's like, but you never met him, and he's like, Exactly my point. And like, he's like, That's exactly my point because how many times have you met my family?

SPEAKER_01

Exactly.

SPEAKER_03

So obviously, it's something a little bit more than casual if he's met his family, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It seems like, and in that moment you could tell that like Keith is out and David isn't, yeah. So it was kind of sad. I feel like David's very much in the wrong, but in that situation during that time in society where like people were very like people had like very bad stigmas against like people who are gay, like it I understand why he was closeted, everybody has their own reason to be causative, even though I just feel like being causative is so dumb. Like the fact that some people have to hide themselves is just dumb, but anyway, um so yeah, that's when we learned that. Yeah, and but Clara sees like this interaction, and she like you can see her reaction, but I don't know if David saw her reacting.

SPEAKER_03

I don't think he saw, um, but she has like the only grin on her face is she's like, Oh shit, I get it now.

SPEAKER_02

Like, yeah, oh I got this, yeah. I mean, living in the same house as her brother, like it's probably all connecting. And so, um, meanwhile, Ruth and Nate are like talking in that side room still, and Ruth is saying, like, she's so ashamed, but like Nate's like, Don't worry, like dad's forgiving you. And Ruth goes, even God forgives me. Nate goes, Yeah, God too. And um, then his phone rings and he sees it's Brenda, but he dodges the call because like obviously he's in a situation like he's he was literally like embracing. Just because your phone ring doesn't mean that you have to answer it. And so then we see Brenda like holding a phone, like standing in her kitchen, holding a phone, and um we see like this, like, and she obviously hangs up the phone when like Nate doesn't pick up, and you see her like going in a refrigerator and taking out like a container of olives. Which like I get I get it. I've I love olives, yeah. I really love olives. I I got these really good ones at Trader Joe, I gotta bring them over next time. They're they're green. So fucking good. They have a pit in them, but I don't even care. I don't care. Ugh. But you see like this guy, which is her brother, um, walking behind her and like going through the refrigerator, just like crying. And and she's like, Are you looking for the olives? And I thought that was she's ego buddy. Like, I mean, they seem like they have an estranged relationship because she tries to distance herself away from like the family house. But to see that they bond over the olives was cute.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and she just she just like hands it to him and he's kind of like appreciative and like takes him and walks away, like just as quickly though.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and now finally we're on the last commercial, um, and the fourth commercial. Franklin's new leaf proof I can't speak, hold on, I'm wiping my nose. Um Franklin's new leak proof earth dispenser. We put the fun back in funeral, which I don't even understand what an earth dispenser is. I don't know what the fuck that is either. That may be like a certain religion or a certain practice.

SPEAKER_03

I looked that up and I didn't want to dig too far because like a lot of stuff kept coming up for six feet under. Oh shit. And so I'm not sure if that's something that's for the show or if that's something that's used in real life. Like I've never seen that in my life.

SPEAKER_02

Maybe that's a practice that is done by funeral homes and not done per religious request. And so maybe some funeral homes do this in their burial service, but not and like there was a pastor there, so obviously like they were Christian, but um maybe it's like a funeral home tradition where it's only some homes do this tradition, and so it's not as popular.

SPEAKER_03

Well, if if you guys out there know anything, please tell us because yeah, I've never seen that before.

SPEAKER_02

And it was through the um passage, and I have to ask my mom if this happened at like my grandmother's funeral home, but he was saying like ashes to ashes, right? The earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. And while he was saying like he was sprinkling the earth, like the the quote unquote like earth from the dispenser onto the coffin, and then he passed it through the family and they all shook it. So it was like symbolizing.

SPEAKER_00

I I can understand. That he was becoming part of the earth again.

SPEAKER_03

Like I can see the symbolism, but I just never saw that in real life.

SPEAKER_02

So I think what that yeah, I know. I think what that was was just like ashes in a dispenser, and then in the scene also, like when it's Nate's turn, he's the last one to like that's supposed to shake like the earth onto the coffin. He's like, I'm not he like I'm just summarizing it. He pretty much is like, I'm not fucking doing that, and he picks up dirt and he throws it on the coffin because that only makes sense. He's like, Why are we sanitizing this? Yeah, this is real, this is raw. Like, he has like a prior experience that he touches on that I didn't talk about about like when he was like traveling the world and he was like on a boat, like passing this like small Sicilian island, and he observed like on the shore, like a funeral happening, and he was talking about like the women at these funerals. Was this in this episode? Yeah, he was talking about the women at these funerals, like just throwing themselves on the coffin and like crying and like showing raw, true emotion, and that and he doesn't it was like right before he walked into the sidebar room. Um, and he was like, I don't understand why we try to hide death. And I think David was trying to explain to him, he's like, You're just so out of touch, like some people just don't want to show their emotion, and so yeah, and so anyway, um Nate throws dirt, and then before David could break it up, um Ruth realizes that what David's trying not what um Nate's trying to say, like she understands his perspective and she also throws dirt, she starts throwing more and more handfuls of dirt, and she starts breaking down and David goes to pull her away and console her, and Nate stops him, and you could see just like that true raw emotion like Nate was talking about Cecilia Funeral. Yeah, he's just like let her, like leave her. Yeah, and so um Nate then gets down with his mom on the floor and starts to cope her. And you see Brenda actually arriving as Claire sees Nate sitting on like um like when Brenda arrives, you also see Claire hallucinating. That's Claire's first hallucination, I think. See her hold on. I got really stuffy, I'm sorry. Seeing her dad sitting on top of the hearse, like making jokes. Yeah, he's like in beach attire.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah, it's crazy. He's like drinking like some fruity tropical drink out of a coconut or some shit, like with a Umbrella, like just living his best death. I don't know how do you he's he's living his best best death life.

SPEAKER_02

Living my best death. Yeah.

unknown

I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

But you know my god.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so um after like Frederico is obviously there, and so Ruth leaves with Frederico and David gets mad at Nate because he's the one who had to do everything concerning the funeral, and Nate's literally here just like criticizing shit. And um David still resents Nate for leaving the house and letting David take all the responsibilities for the family. And like that's something that happens in family businesses, like when one like usually like when the oldest child dips out, it's then on the next child, and like David's upset that like his life won't like he had to put a pause on his own future endeavors because he had to take over the family business, and Nate's like, Don't blame me for not wanting to live your life, it's a choice, you're making a choice. Um and right after that, as like David David and Nate like were fighting, they walk away from each other, and you see this man run up to David and talk about like wanting to buy the funeral home. And he has a name, his name is Matt Galardi, and he's from the Croner K-R-O-E-H-N-E-R, Croner Service International, which must be like a chain of funeral homes. David's like, we're not selling the funeral home, like I'm still in charge of it. Just and like my dad just thought he's like, okay, like the guy's so casual. He's like, I'll let you uh grieve for a little bit.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'll I'll I'll ask you again, like at a better time. Like you're not grieving. Yeah. It was so weird. He's just like, I really want to punch something right now.

SPEAKER_02

And because you're here, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

He's like, hey, I'll ask you again at a better time.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's just it's weird. Like I didn't I forgot that they introduced him in the first episode, but um then we see the rest of Claire's hallucination, she's bullshitting with her dad, and it just shows their relationship and how casual it was. And they were just talking about things that like he won't have to do anymore now that he's dead.

SPEAKER_03

He's like, no responsibility. He's like, This is great. Yeah, he's he's happy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, they're chatting about the advantages of being dead.

SPEAKER_03

I know he makes it sound so much fun.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and Brenda joins me and gives him her number in case he wants to go on a date someday.

SPEAKER_03

How does okay here's here's my stupid thing, right? How does he not have her number if she's called him? It just shows.

SPEAKER_02

It just shows like the.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, I I guess unless you like maybe back in the day. Star 66 or 67. Yeah, whatever. I don't know. What a number. I know it's not star 69, because star 69, not in time, star 69. What? That was a commercial.

SPEAKER_01

No.

SPEAKER_03

Not in time, star 69. What does that mean? Um star 69 was if somebody called you and you didn't know who it was because you didn't get to the phone, then you would hit star 69 and it would tell you who called. Oh, shit. Yeah. Oh wow. So that's how I remember the commercial. It's like, not in time, star 69. Oh, okay. So you can say who called it. Yeah. So I always remember it's not that one. But um, but yeah, or like unless your number was private, maybe her number was private, so it didn't show up on the caller ID. Oh, that's true. I mean, because once you have cell phones, caller ID everybody had caller ID then.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. But so Nate and David are separated. We know what just happened to Nate, and then we found out that David walked himself to Keith's and starts crying into his arms. I can't.

SPEAKER_03

I have such like a beef with this scene. Come on. Okay. He goes there and he's at the door. And when Keith opens the door, he's like, Yeah, he's like shivering. It's fucking California and you're dry. Yeah, even though it's like Christmas Day. It's obviously not that cold that you're standing there, like I mean you guys can't see me, but like, just picture a pathetic person hugging themselves. And he's just like like it was I don't I don't want to say it's a it's bad acting because he's not a bad actor. But like that scene was like really that was dumb. Yeah. Yeah. And then he walks, he opens his door, he walks inside, he kind of like looks around like who the fuck are you looking for? Your mother's not there, and then it's like he's just so I I feel like he's trying to portray brokenness, but it really came across as pathetic. Yeah, it was a little pathetic. Like not broken, just like sad human being, and for for the wrong reasons. Like, not because you're I don't know. I was just like both times I watched it, I was like, why?

SPEAKER_02

So do you think that like David's authentically in the relationship? Do you feel like his feelings are true? Or do you just think like maybe that was Michael Seahall's way of portraying a character that is just like everywhere because of what they're going on with in their life? Maybe that was him as an unexperienced actor. Maybe that truly was just bad acting. I I guess.

SPEAKER_03

Or do you think he was trying to just show like he I mean could be he had a bad scene. Yeah. I don't know. I feel like he was trying to the goal was to say, this is my lowest moment, uh-huh, and I want to be here with you. Like, I feel safe, um, and I I want to be with you, like I want to take you up on it when you said I didn't have to be alone, you know, all those kind of things. It was just the standing there like slumped over, shivering, like it was just kind of stupid. Like that was kind of stupid to me, you know, and then like they embrace and then they start making out, and Keith is like, wait, like he he pulls back and it's just kind of like we're not there enough. Yeah, yeah. You can definitely see already that Keith has genuine feelings. Yeah, I'm not so sure about David. I think best case scenario is that he wants to and doesn't know how. Yeah. But you know, first episode, so who knows?

SPEAKER_02

Exactly.

SPEAKER_03

Well, you know, but you know what I mean.

SPEAKER_02

Well, anyway, after like their kissing scene and whatever, um we see Nate having a flashback again um to himself younger with David outside playing in front of the house, and like Mr. Fisher was watering on. That's a dream.

SPEAKER_03

Well, yeah, we find that's a dream because then he wakes up. Because there's there's a couple of times where you see him have like um a bad dream about his dad being killed or or him being killed. I forgot what it was. But then you see him like in bed. Well he maybe he's like not sleeping. Yeah, no, no, it was right after. Like he was sleeping and then he like. No, no, no, not this one. Oh. But like before there's there's like one or two scenes before where you see him like laying in the bed, and you can tell that like he's like not having a pleasant time. Oh shit, I must have messed up. Yeah, and then this one, it's like all of a sudden it's a happy and he's and he's sleeping, like he's he's like he's at peace almost.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and so he wakes up and when he goes downstairs to like I don't know, like say good morning to his mom, um, she asks if he could stay in Los Angeles for a little bit longer. And he's like, I'll make some phone calls, and she's like, Yeah, just for a couple more days. Yeah. And so he's already accepting the fact that like he knows he's gonna he he knows what's inevitably.

SPEAKER_03

And she has a smile on her face, like she knows what she does.

SPEAKER_02

She's taking advantage of the situation. And so, um Nate and she's like, Can I make you something for breakfast? And he's like, I'm going on a run, I'll have something when I come back. And so again, the runner, he's on his run, he's in the street when he like stops to take a breath, and he's looking across the street at like a bus stop, like a a bench. A bench. And he sees his father sitting on the bench, and he's observing his father who doesn't see him in this hallucination. And um, and at this point we know it's a hallucination. Yeah. We we know. And so um he watches his father get on the bus that comes to the bus stop, and watches him get on the bus, sit down, and then his father sees him. Like his father realizes his son's staring at him from outside the bus when the father sits down, and he gives him like this really like genuine, like content wave. Yeah, like a very content smile and wave, and then you see the bus drive away, and you see Nate following the bus, and underneath the bus, like where the father's sitting, it's like he's following yeah, the like the line of vision, not and it was it said something like peaceful sleep or something like that. Yeah, and basically it was like the bus driving away with the father in it in the ad. I feel like was trying to say, like, he actually is at peace now, yeah. Like, you know, he's like resting, he's not in pain, and like that was Nate accepting the fact, like that was the last bit of acceptance of the fact that like my father's not here anymore, and as he's staring, like he's still staring in like following that direction, yeah, and then you realize um like all the other people kind of come into view around him that are walking and whatever, and he's staring, but then I think it's a I took it to be that from his perspective he's realizing that they're all staring back at him.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, like he's he's seeing real life, not just his vision anymore now.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and he's finished finally like noticing things that are going on around him in the world. Right, right. And so that was how the episode ended. And I think this was a great way to introduce characters that will be influential in everybody else's story, characters that are influential on the story of the funeral home, and this is why I really was drawn to this show, and this is how I explained it to Lisa in episode zero of season three, which if you're on Patreon, you know.

SPEAKER_03

If you're not, then you don't it'll be like the best three bucks you spend.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, really.

SPEAKER_03

I think it was great. But um I said to Lisa that like And we'll probably send you some goodies if you do, if you're not on there already. New new new patrons, pay patron people, they get goodies. Oh, they're so cute.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we're so cute, yeah. We are, but there's two layers to the show, and one of them really like follows the family and like their story and how their story revolves around like the father's life, and um just seeing that last scene really connects you back to like this is what this show is about. Yeah I j I felt content at the end of the episode, and I was so ready to move on to the next episode. But me too. It wasn't like one of like those first episodes where you're like, oh my god, I gotta watch it because it ended on a cliffhanger. Like I thought the first episode was so perfect that I wanted to watch the second. Even though it's not a perfect story.

SPEAKER_03

No, but yeah, but it didn't it didn't leave you feeling empty, like it left you feeling clo like with closure, you know what I mean? It it came around and it and it uh you know wrapped it up nicely.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And so how do you feel about the series so far after the first episode? I liked it.

SPEAKER_03

Um I I definitely was ready to watch the next episode. Yeah, you said Alex was like ready and like the next one, and you're like, but I can't. I know. He's like, You wanna watch the next one? I was like, uh in my head, yes. I was like, no, I can't. Um so I don't know if if it continues, right, but um one of my notes was like that I like oh well, I love the way that they added the dad's ghost, you know, so that you do have that perspective, and and even though they're dealing with his death, you can see the relationship that they had. Um and you know, and and how that contributes to the story. And also that how the commercials like dictate what's gonna happen. Um well, yes but no, um, how the commercials are so um like just matter-of-factslash random for things that I don't know probably exist in some form or another.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

You know, like wound filler and the embalming stuff, but stuff that we have no idea and are so morbid, but and and the way it's just kind of so light and airy in the commercial, like, oh look, and like the salt shaker shit would look like a gap commercial, but it's like okay, but even in death life goes on, and even death is a business, like it it was a really maybe nice is not the right word, but it was um good transitional, yes, and like just a reminder of yeah, it just reiterated the whole message that like death is a business, yeah, yeah. Um, and as for the family, I'm looking forward to getting to know them better, yeah. But it's like they are also uptight, and the mother is clearly very controlling, and they're also self-centered, yeah. So, yeah, I want to see like where their where their stories go.

SPEAKER_02

It's interesting, it really is, and I'm excited to finish the series and then watch it over with you, yeah. But with that, um, I just wanted to tell everybody that if you're driving and you are not home, um that doesn't make sense. If you're drinking and you're not home, please don't drive. Um get home safe, drink responsibly, drive responsibly. And um I need more wine. Yeah. Donate with the coffee thing. Yeah, you know the drill.

SPEAKER_03

It's called buy me a coffee, but we're gonna buy alcohol. Yeah. We're gonna buy a bottle.

SPEAKER_02

And and we're gonna drink it next episode.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. Yes, we are. Um, and if you if you donate on buy me a coffee, um let us know your favorite wine or your favorite drink, and we'll pick it up and we'll try it. Yeah, dope. Yeah. And next week, I don't know what the the episode two is called, but yeah, but I'm ready for it. Yeah. Me too. I'm I'm looking forward to it.

SPEAKER_02

Like it's I feel like different being the side. Yeah, yeah. I I know, like, I was on that side. It's really cool, but like you know how like usually episode two of shows actually pan out the way that the rest of the episodes do, and like the structure.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

This episode pans out like the rest of the show.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Like the rest of the show meaning the series. Yeah, because sometimes they do the pilot and then they work out the kinks.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And this definitely, like, okay, I think the commercials were great for the first episode, but they don't do them anymore. So yeah, from what I remember, I could be wrong when I rewatch the episode, I'll say. But um, I remember that being something that was.

SPEAKER_03

It could probably get to be too much.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like overkill.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but I think it was perfect in the first episode.

SPEAKER_03

Right, and now that you know what wound filler is, I mean how many times do we need to see the commercial for it? Exactly. So. So, with that, I'm Brittany. And I am Lisa. And we'll see you next episode. Yep. Until then, we outta here. Bye guys.
